It's possible that ugly CRLF conversion happened during 'save as text
or some such. I don't know if EMC cares about that but still like to
tell people, to not use windows to mess with Linux/Unix config files.

well.. being 3.43AM, and some minutes since my last message.
 I can't believe this.

I waked up from my bed, turned on the computer, came back to bed and
connected using VNC from the laptop to make a test and post the debug
info correctly this time if i could and even capture a motion screen to
show you.

Since today i was playing around with the config files and didn't kept a
backup i just downloaded again Ted's Files from the message he sent me.
I just put them on a folder, then throw the folder from my home folder
to the home in the other computer.

They just worked fine from the first try and i'm watching the 3D etch a
sketch

I just can't understand what happened before if they were the exact same
files, i think thet if i was using windows when downloaded the last time
shouldn't be the problem. (hope so)

I'm very sorry, people, i can just feel very embarrassed about this, i
can only think that there were something wrong when copied files the
first time... it seems to load the firmware correctly now, and lights go
on then off while loading EMC2.

Well, if someone any time comes to my country i compromise myself to pay
you beer until your chin reaches the floor, or Wine if that's chosen.
Or, maybe a good Asado (and red wine).

Thanks, i'm very very sorry and embarrassed now, i guess i will keep in
bed until 2009 kicks my butt, to see if i can take the stress out of my
head, and let you breath again pacefully without having to read my
capitals, complains and stuff.

In case you don't know this, when you upgrade EMC2, nothing changes in
the configs in your home directory. If you have copied any of the
sample configs, or placed Ted Hyde's config files anywhere, then nothing
you do with apt-get, including remove --purge then reinstall, will
remove or change those files. I just noticed the email where you
mention that purging says "removing config files" - this is the sample
configs, *not* any configs you have created or copied to your home
directory (under ~/emc2/configs/).

There are several files that make up a complete config: the ini file,
the HAL files, the .var and .nml files, and any other accessory files
you may have, such as pyvcp files. I don't know if you have posted the
complete config yet, and it really doesn't matter - we need to see it
again, along with the messages that specific config generates. You
really should run from a command line, as others have suggested. It's
simple - run a terminal (Applications / Accessories / Terminal) and type
"emc", and you'll be presented with the graphical config picker just as
though you had run from the Applications menu. The main difference is
that you will actually see some debugging messages.

It is very strange that you get an error on the axis splash file, since
nearly every EMC2 user sees that when they start EMC2. I can only think
of two ways for that error to occur: 1, your file is corrupt or 2, you
have EMC2 configured with no X axis. Please post the first 20 or so
lines of that file - you can stick them in an email or put them on
pastebin, whichever works better for you. You don't need to include the
whole file, just the first 20 lines will do since they contain line 10,
which is where the error occurs.

I know some about open source, not too much, but i think more than the
average.
I try as much as i can to promote open source software, i know really
good and big projects, known by everyone here, and the problems are
always almost the same, when something does not work for someone, people
behind the project starts a deffensive tactic, something like: "how
could not work for you if it's working for me". Ok, that is the MAIN
issue behind open source.
I know it takes a lot of time, a lot of effort, incredible sacrifice..
but support is so important, and people needs answers.
I'm just trying to make people understand that i receive the same
message over and over, because it mentions the same command, in the same
line in the same file.
Also i stupidly follow a direction to make a test, wich has given a new
kind of error, but there are two scenarios because i'm trying two
different configs. that were suppossedly working.

I understood this but this is a new scenario, because this is when
using the config provided "with" the program on it's version 2.2.8, but
the main scenario where i'm more interested is using the configs, that
Ted Hyde provided me directly, there, on that scenario i am receiving
the same error, the same line, the same command from the same file.

OK, and at wich part of "I DONT WRITE ANYTHING ON COMMAND LINE" can't

The error comes when using the files posted by Ted Hyde that were

complete!

bad character and realtime delay is what emc2 puts on screen (on a
window with an accept button) when starting EMC2 using a suppossedly
working sample config that Peter told me he tryed and worked on his machine.

And the failure to load firmware, was what they (Peter and Sebastian)
said when having the error "unknown command" if i use the files that Ted
Hyde has passed medirectly.
That was the reason by wich they suggested me to upgrade to 2.2.8, and i
keep receiving the same error... unknown command on the same line from
the same file... just equal as to when using 2.2.6.

Richard,
You do NOT understand! The messages you type do not agree with the
posts you send. You must make sure the information you send is good
information. It is YOUR responsibility to answer correct. You MUST
make sure the information you send is the information that answers the
question asked.
If the information you sent was the information that answered the
question then the question would not have been repeated.
Did you look at the three posts Seb listed? Do the posts answer the
questions you were asked?

Yelling at people with "IT DOES NOT WORK..." does not send any
information that is helpful.

At the moment, if i try with the files Ted sent to me directly, i still
have the same errors wich were posted 3 times along with the config files.

And when using the sample config that comes with 2.2.8 i have the error
about extrange caracter "x" that i have told in a recent message.

OK, here is the fact... the used files are exactly the same every
time... i never changed the hal, ini, etc.. files and the message is the
same every time, and this is why i'm so tired of saying the same thing
over and over again.
NO PROGRESS HAVE BEEN MADE, i have upgraded from 2.2.5 to 2.2.6, then
2.2.7, and now 2.2.8, and the same thing happens at the exact same time,
and the error message is exactly the same since 2.2.6 using the exact
same files that Ted Hyde provided me.
"Uncown Command line XX" and the line referres to the same command on
the same line in the same file, so... if you check the old posts is the
same now carbon copy.

Richard, this kind of response gives open source bad name. You have a
situation where something worked OK for others but not for you. I assume
that when they got it working on some systems they assumed it's OK and
put it on the list. Happens all the time. However, there is something
that you are completely ignoring, the fact that not all hardware works
happily together. PCI, USB, PPort, SATA, and other buses are standards,
i.e. they follow more or less (!) specs agreed on at some international
body. The reality is that most manufacturers try to twist whatever
params to their advantage. Integrators end up testing things to see what
works and what not.

I work for a large organization where we certify products which then go
on hardware compatibility list. That list is carefully examined by large
buyers who use that as a leverage to enforce support contracts.

Not all of that exists in open source. This group, and I DO NOT SPEAK
FOR IT (they pay too little :-), simply tries their best to help people
get their stuff working. It takes some courage, a lot of knowledge,
experience, and some luck to get it all working.

You are the integrator in this case and have 3 options:

- take time to get current HW work with help from the developers and
experienced heavy users

- replace HW in question with one that has better track record to
speedup your project

- change the project from EMC to something else with better (?)
commercial support

I would opt for #2 and take the whole thing as a good lesson and put the
card in question on side for future projects when you have more time.

You said there is only one line of error message. While that might be
important, John if I'm not mistaken, asked about file
/usr/shareaxis/images/axis.ngc

I think they wanted you to cut/paste +/- lines from that file. Another
words, use command like
less /usr/shareaxis/images/axis.ngc
check around line 10 cut/paste from it to email.

As a mater of fact, I would use mc (Midnigt Commander) and examine that
file line by line in hex mode to see if there are no illegal characters
(I'm assuming all should be simple ASCII text) and to see if the lines
are terminated properly (LF only). There is no end to frustration
chasing down errors with "text" files that were edited in some windoze
system and copied over to Linux.

Similar is not good enough. Motherboards differ and it might be
worthwhile you try a different one. I don't know your circumstances, but
my guess is there must be another (newer) PC around that could be used
for an experiment. I would swap hard drive(s) and PCI IO card, and
reinstall from scratch. Installation is very fast.

Just because MB passes all hardware tests, it might still not be good
for real time as required for EMC.

You can say this 100 times, and all you are going to do is piss off the
people who are trying to support you 100 times!

We want to see the exact text that you are typing on the command line,
and the exact response you get from your computer. Every single letter,
every single time. If messages are popping up in dialog boxes, you
should type them word-for-word, but I suspect that the exact same
information is being printed to the command line.

If you are starting EMC from an icon instead of the command line, DON'T
DO THAT! You say you are an experienced Linux user - then you should
know that programs often send error messages to the terminal you run
them from. If you run from an icon, you never see those messages.

You have described several completely unrelated problems. Realtime
delays, 'bad character "x" used', failure of firmware to load, etc.

How can you possibly troubleshoot multiple problems at one time?

> The files i have posted originally on pastebin ended with a "unknown
> command on line XX", that is what i said.

Where on pastebin? You started posting things a month ago. Are you
telling me that every single time you have tried this, with different
version and everything, that the results have been EXACTLY the same to
the last letter?

If not, then post the most recent results on pastebin again!

Have you ever posted the results of attempting to use Ted's sample
config? When I say results, I mean what is printed in the shell, and
the output of dmesg - every single letter.

Describing things in your own words simply wastes your time and ours.

> I guess there must be some people trying to help, ok, and i'm very

(snip)

> OH.. amazing!!! the SUPPOSSEDLY to work config IS NOT WORKING! (again)

EMC has a number of tools that allow a skilled person to figure out WHAT
is not working. You don't seem to have tried to actually investigate
the cause of your problem. I realize that some people have been telling
you to install this version and that version and reinstall and such.
Personally I think that is bad advice - you should INVESTIGATE the cause
of the problem, not just start replacing things at random. Once you
know the cause, then we can tell you "that is fixed in version XXX", or
"you need to change this in your config" or whatever.

But you haven't done that kind of detailed troubleshooting, or if you
have you haven't told us what you did.

RULES FOR REPORTING PROBLEMS:

1) TELL US EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID

That means the entire contents of all your config files, every single
letter that you typed at the command prompt, and every single click of
the mouse. Do as much as possible from the command prompt, since it is
far easier to log what you did that way.

2) TELL US EXACTLY WHAT YOU EXPECTED TO HAPPEN

3) TELL US EXACTLY WHAT DID HAPPEN

That means every single letter of output at the command prompt and in
dmesg, as well as a description of what happened in dialog boxes and
such. To avoid mixing together the results of multiple runs, type
"dmesg -c" to clear the log before starting EMC.

> and again and again and again everything can be solved with a fresh
> install, or an upgrade... but... in the kingdom of reallity it does not
> work like that.

No, it doesn't. That was bad advice in my opinion, but I think it was
given in desperation

As far as I can recall, I never seen someone say the same thing over and
over rather than politely responding with requests for additional
information.

People really are trying to help. Please spend less time complaining and
more time responding to the direct requests of those who are trying to help.

IS THE SAME ERROR!!!
The files i have posted originally on pastebin ended with a "unknown
command on line XX", that is what i said.
That was the error using Ted Hyde's files on 2.2.6 AND 2.2.7 even when
several people said the error came from using 2.2.6 and asked to upgrade
to 2.2.7. I made a clean install to do this. (again as i did when going
from 2.2.5 to 2.2.6)

Now, i have posted the computer specs, i have posted the config files
used, i have now made a new install to upgrade to 2.2.8, and... voilá..
the suppossedly to work config does not work.

I guess there must be some people trying to help, ok, and i'm very
grateful to all of you, but, when i read some stuff it seems like a bad
taste joke.

-I bought a board announced as supported on EMC2
then, they say the board is NOT fully supported, that the driver is
being developed...
ok, bad sales tactic, we call that a scam, you cannot tell something is
supported, then after sold clarify it is not FULLY supported, wich
actually means is barely supported as i could get from the answers i had.

-OK, they asked to upgrade from 2.2.5 to 2.2.6, it will start to work,
not completelly but it will work...
fresh install, and, nothing worked.

-Ted Hyde has offered his config files wich were working. (suppossedly)
some suggested i'm some kind of dumb... hey, look, he's using 2.2.6 haha...

-Ok, made a fresh install, to upgrade from 2.2.6 to 2.2.7..
NICE... now... i have the exact same situation that using 2.2.7 NOTHING
changed, i hav ethe same errors, but, now, noone suggested i'm using the
wrong version, and, also... silence.
Peter Wallace (if i'm not wrong) told me to use some DOS programs to
test the board. The board is working fine, and also my hardware does
since tests went fine.

Then he said he tested a similar or equal hardware config as mine using
ted hydes' config with success.
-OH... fine, magic, config is working, you must have been installed
something wrong (on a fresh install) 2.2.8 is working perfectly after an
"apt-get update" from 2.2.7...
OK!!! GREAT!!!
apt-get upgrade... NEVER WORKED, never announced an upgrade available,
under any version, it does not work for me at all.

OK, i'll apt-get remove --purge, then apt-get install... great it says
"purging data files", hey... is installing 2.2.8... i can now stop being
the dumb here...
OH.. amazing!!! the SUPPOSSEDLY to work config IS NOT WORKING! (again)

and again and again and again everything can be solved with a fresh
install, or an upgrade... but... in the kingdom of reallity it does not
work like that.

I have an associate, who's the one putting the money on the table, the
iron/steel skeleton part is built, servos are bought,
encoders are bought, but the board is not working at all and he's
calling me several times a week, and if i tell him i send an email, he
can call about 8 times on a day to know wich is the answer.

I also have a work, several works actually, i have to provide support to
several enterprises, and i have no time to spent, even less to waste, if
i would know from the first time i was going to have all this trouble, i
could buy another brand/model and maybe spend some more money or simply
say, no way, but... i believed on what i read. Supported.

Sorry guys, but i'm really really tired of all this.

I'm a Kubuntu user on a daily basis, for work, and for entertainment,
i'm a suscriber to xHarbour and Harbour mailing lists, and on Scribus
mail list too. I have asked for help tons of times to them... and always
could solve the problems, slower of faster ,but never stuck on the same
place or so long time.
I never had so much trouble to get something to work u

Richard, I think there might be a misunderstanding. Every time that emc
crashes, it creates a dmesg file that tells what was going on and what
happened when it crashed. the guys that are way better than I am can look
at this info and figure out what to do to fix the crashes. Every time
something is different and it crashes with different errors, the dmesg will
be different telling what's going on. so every time progress is made, we
(more like the other guys, wish i could personally help) will need a new
dmesg and copies of the current configurations being used in order to see
everything that is being done by the computer and where things go wrong.
Hope I'm able to help you and your situation, I just got an M5i20 card and
7i33, working on drawing and programming a board to go from 50 pin header on
7i33 to screw terminals to the wiring in the machine.

OK, but THAT file comes with EMC2 2.2.8 that was supposed to be working
following a lazy path and then just double click on emc2servo config.
Well, it seems to me that finally was not working at all, and that the
people saying they tryed that are really not doing it.

I have posted everything they asked, and it seems like they are not
reading what i post, just keep asking the same thing again and again.
Also the board has 3 lights, and as i can interpretate from them, the
firmware is not beeing loaded into board, but it seems lights are not
important.

I just apt-get remove emc2 --purge then apt-get install emc2, so it
wouldn't be corrupted since is the same as using install_emc.sh.

All lights on?... when i boot my computer, the board starts with all
lights on.
Then Ted Hyde sent me his config. and hal files, then started to test
with it.
When using 2.2.6 lights(init and ready) went off and then on in the
sequence first init and then ready, then stayed on
It was giving the "unknown command" in some line (posted in pastebin)
and all of you said it was because the 2.2.6 version, also was some kind
of "look the imbecil" the commentaries i read about.

On 2.2.7 (as all of you said) and also 2.2.8, using the SAME files that
i was using with 2.2.6 (Ted Hyde's ones) lights just go off, and never
come back on.

If i use the sample you said... lights dont even go off, and gives the
errors i passed you.

Why would i do that AGAIN, i did' it when 2.2.5 to 2.2.6... then as
you asked, did it again from 2.2.6 to 2.2.7... and... now again?.. what
would change?

I have "apt-get remove --purge" and then installed it using apt-get...
don't want to start all over again, installing Linux every time
something is unknown...

I have posted the errors, and the config files, the errors must say you
something.., there is something wrong, OK, there you got the debug
file.. there must be something writen about.

I can't see my own messages or i could put again the pastebin links,
but, just search for Ted Hyde's message with his config files and try
with them...

I'm really tired of this, i have bought something that was supposed to
work and work fine, there was no notice about an unstable driver,
firmware, testing, nothing about that on 7i43 or i would preferred to go
buy other board.

Then you said the driver was beeing incomplete, testing and so on... ok,
but please tell that before the people buy your hardware.

Some time ago you have offered to change the board for a 5i20, i said i
was going to test the suppossed to be working Ted Hyde's files... but,
they didn't work, so, please, tell me what to do to change this board.
I'm really tired and my associate is killing my nerves.(as this board
does also)

you should be able to reverse the sign of the scale in the .ini file and
then reverse the connections (in .hal file) for the encoder

[Emc-users] servo reverse

2008-12-21 Thread Arnold Riter CNC
Hello to everybody,

I'd like to thanks you all for the information which make me able to
carry out the conversion of a BF20 mill to CNC.
I've been using cnc for a while with windows based program, and emc2.
When I decided to use servos in my last project , it was clear for me
that the option of EMC2 will be the best, and already tested the machine
I can said that I am very pleased with EMC2+Linux

I've used brushless servo + 5i20 mesa card + 7i33 + 7i37
I'm very happy with the mesa cards, I can read the encoders with no
problems at all from the first time, and all the system are very very
fast and reliable.

I'm finishing the work and I need your help, so the question is:

I need to reverse the way of one servo turn, but I wouldn't like to
modify the wiring, so, is it possible to change any software part like
the hal file? If possible could you give me a clue how to do that?

Thanks very much in advance, and sorry, my english is not very fine

Arnold

You have not posted the information i asked for in the email you quoted.
The reason I asked you to post what you did and how the computer
responded is that you're reporting a new error now. Yesterday you said
the error you got was "unknown command". This is a radically different
kind of problem than what you reported previously, so the old
information you posted is of no use. Does that make sense?

We're trying to help you Richard. You're trying to run what seems like
a well-tested system; a system that's working well for all the
developers and several users. We're trying to figure out what's
different about your setup that makes it so it doesnt work for you. We
can't do this without careful, detailed information from you about
what's happening on your computer.

You really should resolve this error before going any further.

I know the link says stepper diagnostics but the RTAPI error is a general one.

I was not suggesting that you were lazy, but just that I was lazy and took
the simplest route to testing the 7I43+EMC2.2.8.

Lazy meaning that I did nothing other then loading the latest EMC version
(by upgrading EMC 2.2.6 via Synaptic package manager to EMC 2.2.8)

This worked the first time I double clicked hm2servo, 0 problems

No Idea, I sure didnt see anything like this.

Is this a new 2.2.8 installation? Maybe its corrupted in some way

Mine was absolutely new. I would suggest starting fresh as that worked
instantly for me.

This likely means that you _DO_ need to run the latency test as your
motherboard as currently set-up is causing delays in real time scheduling

Thats what "all lights on" means

I would do a fresh (reformat) Jinstall and upgrade to 2.2.8 then we
know what you have (at this point its not clear whether your installation is
corrupted in some way) There is just no reason for this many problems that no
one else is seeing

Something is fishy here though - isn't axis.ngc the EMC2 splash screen
program? Hundreds of users are loading that g-code file every time they
start EMC, and it isn't causing errors.

Also, "X" is a perfectly legitimate character in g-code.

Stuart is exactly correct in that the proper action is to READ the
message, THINK about what it means, and LOOK for the cause of the problem.

this message tells you there is something wrong near line 10 of the file:
/usr/shareaxis/images/axis.ngc

it even tells you what is wrong:
bad character "x" used

your response to this should be:
open the file with an editor and look for an "x" character on or near line 10
if you cannot figure out what the error is then post a copy of a few
lines prior and a few lines past

someone will try to help you
people are trying to help you now - they just don't have enough information

this is a separate problem - you may run your machine but you may
experience hesitation during motion as something about the hardware is
using too much time.

2008-12-21 Thread Richard Acosta
Is nothing about lazyness... is about being tired of to do something
that is supossed to work.. and it does not! again and again and again.

When going your lazy path i got the following two messages.

"Acercar linea 10 en /usr/shareaxis/images/axis.ngc: bad character "x" used"

"RTAPI:: ERROR: Unespected realtime delay on task 1
This Message will only display once per session.
Run the Latency Test and resolve before continuing"

And all lights are always ON as they are from startup.

When using the old driver/firmware on 2.2.6, at least lights went off,
then init and done turned on, this time, nothing. When using the config
samples provided by Ted Hyde, lights go off and never come back on, and
then the "Unknown Command Error".

It seems to me, that firmware is not loading at all

[Emc-users] AB axis geometry compensation

2008-12-21 Thread Stuart Stevenson
Gentlemen,
   I posted this http://pastebin.ca/1290847.
It is the A and B axis compensation I have been working on. I don't
have it coded for EMC. I will work on that.
I posted it for a week expiration.
grab if you want
critique if you want - I would like that
question?
thanks
Stuart
