If you really think they receive a sealed engine and simply bolt it in,
then you really need to go on a race shop tour. You will not be able to
get into the real machine shop but you will get an idea of how wrong
your statement is. I work in a machine shop that makes parts for a

Mark,
Honestly man you are wrong on so many levels as I said before I am not
gonna wast this thread trying to convince you of it. Do some open minded
research on this and better yet go take a ride in one of these cars and
then see for yourself. It is a real viable technology that is only getting
better and it IS the future of the automobile. Americans, especially rural
americans are quite set in their ways and much less open to new
technologies than the rest of the civilized world so your arguments are not
surprising to me in the least. For me I cannot wait until I most of the
cars on the road are EV's.

Nobody can comment?

Where does one normally put home switches on a bench style lathe?

I have been assuming the carriage (Y) s/b zeroed with the cutting tools
edge exactly on centerline, with Z (the leadscrew) zeroed at the face of
the chuck. Is this wrong?

BTDT, even tore old 40 wire IDC cables apart & split off what I needed, but
since those are only 18" long, usually too short. I did have one 2 feet
long but that exceeded the specs, and as expected, trashed too much data.
I first blamed the drive but when a fresh drive needed to be e2fck'd the
second time in a week, the old drive, on a shorter cable was put back in.
Worked till I retired the box in favor of an Intel D525MW.

Honestly, if there are any EMC users within50 miles of sacramento, I need
friends to play with. EMC user map hasn't worked for me in about 2 years. I
am the only linux user I know... simple stuff escapes me sometimes.

I have a lot to give back. I owe it to Radek to help this guy so he doesn't
have to walk another newbie through the basics.

Any users in my area area urged to contact me. I am an EMC success story and
I really want to compare notes.

No, but there is a program from the government where you can get a very low

Well - I fail at copy and paste...

this should work better.

I thought I would give an update on our ongoing project.

This is a 60's vintage NC that used hydraulic servos. we are converting it
to EMC2 using not quite as old Inland servos. (80's vintage) they are 8
brush low rpm high torque. (with the amc drives we are using - it will be
40ft-lbs peak.) We are using 2 mesa 5i20 boards as we are needing a good
70+ i/o + atleast 7 encoder counters and 5 +/-10v outputs. We are at the
point where the machine is waking up. the mesa hardware is awesome (thank
to peter and seb for their work).

Be sure to watch the 2 videos at the end of this email.

lets see if I can create a linear picture show...

Because we are still using the z axis drive train that goes up though the
saddle - we needed to get the backlash out of it. It uses split gears to do
that. Grinding 1 washer thinner takes the backlash out of 5 sets of gears.
the washer is the spacer between the 2 lower small gears.
http://electronicsam.com/images/KandT/conversion/zaxis/gears.JPG

we still have to mount the y axis servo. - The plan is to direct couple into
this shaft.

once a week.)

I don't think that looks like the right sort of thing at all. It
doesn't seem to add anything that EMC2 can't already do in software,
and costs twice what a Mesa card does to do it in hardware. It claims
to "close the loop" but all it really looks to do is to trigger a
following error with Mach3 based stepper systems. EMC2 already has
that functionality available.

I am not meaning to be critical here, just trying to save the original
poster from some confusion

I can't comment on 'production' stability as I am only a hobbiest, but my
lathe conversion with a 5i20 and hm2 (my first foray into emc) went
painlessly (ie none of the problems were emc/5i20 related). I used the
lathe last week for the whole day and I had no problems.

I picked up second hand AC servos and drivers on ebay. I use a 1.5kW AC
servo on the spindle (geared 3:1 so max rpm is down to 1500). I use the
encoder and index directly on the spindle to synchronise threading. My plan
is to use the servo on the spindle as an A axis, and add a Z (Y?) axis with
another spindle to be able to machine rotary table style - this is more of a
dream.

I've only used 2 I/O pins so far - home X and touch probe. I have a USB
pendant. I can't see myself ever using all the I/Os.

That looks like a "simple" 3 axis mill with an arm tool changer. I
just converted a little VMC a lot like it. Coincidentally it also
originally had a Yasnac control. Mine is mid-80s, this is early-90s
era - not sure what the differences would be.

http://timeguy.com/cradek-files/emc/jr.jpg

I didn't have any particular problems with the EMC part. Unfortunately
I had to deal with a lot of defective parts that came on the machine.

I added support to the development version of EMC2 for tool changers
like this one that can only swap the spindle tool with a carousel
pocket (i.e. they can't put the old tool back in the pocket it came
from.)

I also wrote a new touchscreen-specific GUI for it. That is also in
the future EMC2.4.

Re: [Emc-users] Powerdex Tool Changers

2008-03-08 Thread Gary Corlew
If you would like to try building your own here are some links,
http://www.cnc-projects.de/ <- look at cnc-revolver
http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46771
I ran across one other also that use pins to lock into position, But I don't
