That is the newest version offered to a wheezy machine.

So it's an Ubuntu install then.

No, debian wheezy, /etc/issue says debian GNU/Linux 7, about 7.11 I
think, uptodate a/o this morning.

Which is akin to the Ubuntu 12.04 version.  Dunno what to tell you.
Obviously something is broke, but it's not the new version of Calibre.

I've got it on a 10.04 LTS lcnc install and it works just fine.
Must be something you've done with that machine that breaks it.
Which wheezy? Ubuntu or Debian?

This is straight from the install image at linuxcnc.org. With lots
of additions because this machine is the doall machine. 100% updated
2 to 4x a week.

Then something is broken somewhere.  There's no reason installing it
from the command line from the Calibre web site should croak and die
like it did, unless something is missing, turned off, or mangled in
the system.  I've installed from the command line on 10.04, 12.04,
14.04 and now 16.04.

What have you done with the system other than edit and change the lcnc
configuration files?  It's quite possible if you were monkeying with
library files something got hosed or there are incompatible lib files
on the system that interact with programs like wget.

Calibre "Just Works", and has for the last 4 iterations of Ubuntu
software.

I guess I'm old school, mc is my file manager. I don't even know if it
can be a drag & drop src. And it turns out that any epub's I may have
had were wiped with a new install, circa 3+ years ago, as the only ones
present on the system today are part of the calibre install.

I've been playing with it for the last half hour, and the only thing it
can open anything with is with gimp, and that spits out errors, failing
to actually display the contents. So its gone downhill in a well oiled
little red wagon since the last time I poked at it.

Now its time to go feed the missus, & after that, write some gcode to
carve a reversed 5C on an alu rod currently sticking out of the Sheldons
spindle, which I had to regrind for concentricity, it was bent about 5
thou, probably by the same fallover that wrecked the compound and
probably at least 2 owners back in time. This is to make a new 5C
adapter by grinding the grizzly part down to the abbreviated MT5 in the
Sheldon spindle. I'll make a lathe out of this thing yet.

Hi Gene,

I have used Calibre process a LOT of ebooks and the only books it has
failed on are scanned pdfs, ones with DRM and occasional corrupted
files. It most definitely will open epub and I generally use it to
convert whatever format the book comes in to epub. I have to admit it's
conversion of pdf to other formats isn't great but very few packages do
a good job of that.

I don't know why it wouldn't see the epub when you tried opening it. Try
dragging a file out of a file manager and dropping it into calibre. I
often do that.

Les

The ebooks I have bought, have cost me over $50 so far, and the distros
versions of calibre have yet to read even one of them. So pardon me
for being skeptical while quoting the whole transaction above.

But thanks for the link(s)

The calibre I currently have installed, version unk because it doesn't
have such a critter in its about or help screens, reads a pdf just fine,
but does not even show an e-pub thats present in the same directory.
And it cannot the pdf on deat tree from the pdf w/o a huge waste of
paper and ink, apparently totally ignoring what the printer says it can
do.

FWIW I have 2, one being a cheap very fast brother b laser, letter
size paper only, and a MFCJ6920DW brother ink squirter, slow, but can
do up to 11x17 duplex.

So obviously I don't use it, evince or okular both work far better. Works
great on rockhopper output run thru ps2poster though.

I'd have to come to that conclusion too, but most of the 8" for bench
grinders either supply the correct hub, or will sell you the bushing
cheap.

1 review writer said to have been using the very thin coated
electroplated version, for about 5 years in his shop, notes that it
takes about a months use to "activate" it and that he had never had a
good excuse to dress it. Said he did clean the tool before he headed to
the grinder to sharpen it, recommended by the wheel supplier I guess.

I'll have to make an arbor, and will report on this one when I've had a
chance to use it.

I was able to read a bit of that, thought about just buying it on dead

Re: [Emc-users] CBN wheels.

2018-01-07 Thread Marcus Bowman
One thing I have noticed is important with CBN wheels is that there is little
or no run-out on the wheel when mounted, because there is no real depth to the
coating, so dressing appears to be somewhat risky. I have seen several reports
of wheels supplied with considerable run-out when they are mounted using the
as-supplied centre hole. I expect this may be price-related.

2018-01-07 Thread Leonardo Marsaglia
I've always been curious about these grinding wheels. Are these dressed
like normal aluminum oxide wheels? Because sometime ago I read about
grinding machines prepared for CBN wheels.

The Landis ones I know have wheel dressers for CBN and the only difference
I really noticed is that the dresser is a more fancy and also more rigid,
but other than that, is there any difference?

It isn't exactly that.
The thing is that carbon dissolves in iron. That is what steel actually is.

I have their catalog as it was included (in a separate package) with my

does show a few CBN wheels but all are for their tool grinder, with the
abrasive in quite narrow locations on the wheel rim or face. No smaller,
flat faced, arbor mounts. When sharpening HSS I had been putting a 6"
one face 1200 grit diamond wheel in the milling machine spindle, then
pinching the tool between the jaws of a 3" chuck mounted on a 4"
motorized table standing on edge, with the tool tilted for relief angles
as its pinched, then running the table 60 degrees either side of
vertical to polish the edges. Usually bringing the z down until I could
hear contact, then sweeping x to distribute the wear on the diamond
while lowering z at 0.7 or less a minute. I get phenomenally sharp
tools but it's slow, particularly when shaping a new piece of HSS.

And that got it hot enough to wreck the face of the disk at 300 revs.
Then I'm reading where there is a chemical reaction between the carbon
in HSS steel and diamond that makes diamond a poor choice, and that on
HSS I should be using CBN. Cubic Boron Nitride.

The 6" diamond is really too big, not enough y movement of my mills
table.

A 3 or 4" diameter wheel would work better, turning slow enough to keep
the heat down. But those seen to be made out of un-obtainium.

I'll give Shars a ring tomorrow to see what they may have added to the
catalog since issue 2016A. They have a couple other gizmo's I could use
too.

Gene, check out Shars tools CBN wheels. They are decent quality and as of a
few years ago at least were very economical. I have not traded with them
since they were a small operation without much of an online presence, but
they were very good people to deal with. www.shars.com

Happy new year!

[Emc-users] CBN wheels.

2018-01-07 Thread Gene Heskett
Greetings all;

I appear to be learning that one can't use diamond on an HSS tool, as
I've managed to kill a 1200 grit diamond faced 6" disk.

But has anyone found a source of CBN wheels that don't start at $200 and
go on up to triple digit prices?
