Defrag errors

2003-09-29 Thread Neil Doody
Does anyone know what this defrag error means? And how to fix the
problem?

Also, anyone have a link to some good online ESEUTIL documentation?
Other than the Microsoft website, want to get a good comprehensive
manual for ESEUTIL usage.

Error :-

Operation terminated with error -1603 (JET_errNoCurrentRecord, Currency
not on a record) after 4565.109 seconds.

RE: Defrag errors

2003-09-29 Thread Neil Doody
Already tried that, try adding the 1603 into the equation and there is
not listing for that error number.

Ive also tried the search term "Currency not on a record" it lists
JetPack errors, which is just a list of possible errors, with no fixes.
And then it has something listed about Microsoft Access 2.0.

Thanks for trying anyway.

I am working with a relatively new Ex2K build and have had two different
external contacts report intermittent NDR's. There is no PIX firewall in
place and ESMTP verbs have been disabled on our end.

The NDR is "4.4.1 Did not receive the expected protocol response."

Searching the usual sources has turned up nothing.

Any ideas/suggestions?

OWA not working when it redirects to SSL

2003-09-29 Thread Jose Manzano
  Hello Guys,

We have Exchange OWA on the following address

   https://lib-mail.wpbpl.com/exchange/logon.asp

The web server Lib-Mail is published through ISA. The problem is we get
a DNS error host not found when we try to access the site from the outside.
It however works fine if your go to this addy
http://lib-mail.wpbpl.com

It brings up fine the warning that the address is going to be redirected to
the HTTPs site. IS this something on the ISA server that I need to fix ?

IMC out bound queue question

2003-09-29 Thread RGrant
I have read about other folks having troubles with thier outbound queue
getting hammered, and mine is not exception. My question about this
involved the IMC properties tab called Rounting and then under that, the
routing restrictions. I have noticed that when I have " hosts and clients
that successfully auth" box checked, my queue gets hammered with tons of
junk. Some with originators with adress like [EMAIL PROTECTED], and the anti loop
<>. some of these <> are in the thousands from yahoo.com and aol.com etc. Now,
when I take that check mark off, leaving only "hosts and clients with
these IP address'" my queue totally calms down and my processor stops
pegging at 100%. Why would this change make that difference? Am I allowing
the spam through for some reason with that check box unchecked so it
doesnt pile up in the queue? By taking off the
" hosts and clients that successfully auth" , am I denying an internal
user who might have a mass mailer access to the outbound queue? To me it
would still hit the queue, just return to them a 550.
Any thoughts on this would be great! My environment is Windows 2000
server, with 5.5. No AD, and current Service packs.
Thanks,
Ron

"NT Numbers" access

2003-09-29 Thread Orin Rehorst
On Windows NT platform you can cross reference Lawson Users to NT Numbers by running
"listusermap | lashow." From there you can save to file.

Can this data be accessed directly i.e. a program searches for the cross reference
without first exporting the file?

RE: Logic Validation

2003-09-29 Thread Couch, Nate
As long as there is a connector of some sort (it might be X.400 or SMTP as
well) you should be okay. You do not need a connector for every server in a
site to another site. As long as there is a route to get mail from site A
to site B you are good to go. Make sure you stop and start the MTA or force
a recalculation fo the routing table after you have made the necessary
changes.

RE: options

Or you could use some form of collaboration software such as Outlook
Team Folders (similar to PF's but more versatility)- unsupported by MS
at present but it looks good. If u can't find it I can send the pack

Have a look at: http://www.slipstick.com/dev/teamfolders.htm

What happens when their hard drive fails, where is the backup. You have
already decided that keeping the emails is important, therefore:

1) storing the emails in a public folder is the way to go
2) Permissions can be set to only allow them to add messages and not
delete. (no different to file permissions
3) You could assign a SMTP address to the PF and get them to send on
behalf of the PF to save them .
4) Archiving after project closure to PST is the way to go (OL 2003
removes the 2GB limit)

all have 20 GB free on their workstations, how about setting up a pst
folder on their D-drives, then they can drag the mails into that one?

Nothing in my event log. The NDR is being generated on the sending end -
not on my server.

It also appears that not all messages are NDRing.

It might be something on the other end. 4.4.1 usally indicates a network
issue. Does it happen for all email sent to those two domains. How was
it
sent. Anything in the Event logs?

I am working with a relatively new Ex2K build and have had two different
external contacts report intermittent NDR's. There is no PIX firewall in
place and ESMTP verbs have been disabled on our end.

The NDR is "4.4.1 Did not receive the expected protocol response."

Searching the usual sources has turned up nothing.

Any ideas/suggestions?

RE: "NT Numbers" access

2003-09-29 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
I imagine you could stick the listusermap command into a FOR /F
statement in a DOS batch file. That will step through output line by
line. You could then call that into a batch file and do comparison.

On Windows NT platform you can cross reference Lawson Users to NT
Numbers by running "listusermap | lashow." From there you can save to
file.

Can this data be accessed directly i.e. a program searches for the cross
reference without first exporting the file?

This "should" effectively remove any inherited size limits, right?

Hello all,

I am re-posting this (with my fingers crossed) in the hope that someone
out there can help me with this issue.

I am having an issue in Exchange 2k SP3. I have size restrictions in
place on the Public Folders at the store level. There is a sub-folder in
the default PF tree that has had the size restrictions removed, but
whenever the user tries to exceed 100MB (the restriction set at the
store level) he receives the following error:

Can't move the items. The item could not be moved. It was either already
moved or deleted, or access was denied.

If he reduces the size of the PF to under 100MB he can add to it. I have
removed the check box to Use Store defaults, in the Limits tab and have
left everything else blank. I assume that this means there is no size
restriction on this particular folder. Am I right???

Please help, thanks.

Permissions changing on pickup directory

2003-09-29 Thread Chris Levis
I have a couple of webpages using CDO to send mail. For them to work, I
have to give IWAM_server write access to the pickup directory of my
Exch2k-SP3 server. So I give IWAM those rights and the pages work fine.
However, we try out the webpage again a few hours later, and we get an
"access denied" error. So I look at the permissions on the pickup
directory and see that IWAM has been removed. I assume Exchange has
repermissioned pickup to be tighter. So I tried changing it again (and
unchecking "inherit permissions from parent.."), and again it works for
a while before breaking.

Am I supposed to be doing this a different way?

Thanks!

Possible MTA Issue???

2003-09-29 Thread Bennett, Josh
Hello again all,

In an Ex 2000 SP3 W2K SP4 environment, I am seeing event id: 967 from
MSExchangeTransport with the following message:

This master server received a one level (Connector) call back. However
no DS change has been detected and no major version increase will occur
as a result. This should not result in reset route or updated routing
packets being sent out to its slave servers and neighboring routing
groups.

Is this something I should be concerned with or is this just a routine
message in Exchange. We completed our migration from 5.5 about a month
ago, and I noticed this message popping up in the Application logs on my
bridgehead server rather frequently. The KB articles I dig up on it
don't explain much. I assume it is not a big issue but I just wanted to
bounce this off you all to ensure I am not looking at the beginning of a
major issue.

Thanks for all the help, past and present.

RE: IMC out bound queue question

2003-09-29 Thread Durkee, Peter
Have you tried opening some of the message files in \exchsrvr\imcdata\out with a text
editor to see what they all are? I would think the <> messages would just be the usual
NDRs, but anything showing an AOL address as the originator would definitely be
unnerving, and might point to a spammer who can authenticate.

As it happens, I have our routing restrictions set up the same as you with both
specific ip addresses, and users who authenticate checked, and haven't noticed any
excessive and unaccountable activity in the out queue.

A Challenge responded to - Review of "Achieving Process Profitabi lity"

2003-09-29 Thread Schwartz, Jim
I received and read this book (closer to a booklet than a book) Friday. The
author does a fairly good job of translating some basic TQM principles as
they relate to IT. The book is an easy read but could have used more real
world scenarios to emphasize certain points. As far as the philosophy of the
author goes, I feel that Greg has highlighted some of the failures that many
IT people make in their assumptions as to their role in an organization. (I
won't get into great detail as I'll leave other people who may be interested
in forming their own opinions.) I've called it the Mainframe Mentality in
the past. Build it and they will come has no place in IT anymore. His
assumptions as to role in IT I've feel he got it partially correct, but
missed some things as well. Automation of manual process is important, but
the I in IT does stand for something that the author failed to talk about at
all. There is another area that I feel that was missed entirely. The
importance of have a strong, flexible and reliable infrastructure. Most of
the focus at the end of the book was (to me) from the point of view of an
application developer and most of the points are valid. However, developers
must have an strong infrastructure to develop on. This is one of the most
difficult concepts for IT to sell to the money managers.

Overall I'd rate the booklet "Fair". For those not familiar with TQM or ITIL
it is a basic introduction to some of those concepts. For those who what to
delve deeper into those concepts, I'd suggest reading "The Deming Management
Method" and "The 5 Pillars of TQM". The ITIL website also has information on
IT Service Management. http://www.ogc.gov.uk/index.asp?id=2261

RE: IMC out bound queue question

One thought might be to turn diagnostics logging up on the SMTP
interface and check for an account that is being used to authenticate.
You might want to do this to see if you have an account with a password
that might have been compromised.

Subject: IMC out bound queue question

I have read about other folks having troubles with thier outbound queue
getting hammered, and mine is not exception. My question about this
involved the IMC properties tab called Rounting and then under that, the
routing restrictions. I have noticed that when I have " hosts and
clients
that successfully auth" box checked, my queue gets hammered with tons of
junk. Some with originators with adress like [EMAIL PROTECTED], and the anti
loop
<>. some of these <> are in the thousands from yahoo.com and aol.com
etc. Now,
when I take that check mark off, leaving only "hosts and clients with
these IP address'" my queue totally calms down and my processor stops
pegging at 100%. Why would this change make that difference? Am I
allowing
the spam through for some reason with that check box unchecked so it
doesnt pile up in the queue? By taking off the
" hosts and clients that successfully auth" , am I denying an internal
user who might have a mass mailer access to the outbound queue? To me it
would still hit the queue, just return to them a 550.
Any thoughts on this would be great! My environment is Windows 2000
server, with 5.5. No AD, and current Service packs.
Thanks,

Public folder replication problem while moving to new server

2003-09-29 Thread Smith, Ronni
I'm pretty sure I have shot myself in the foot and so first up let me
acknowledge my stupidity. I'm hoping that someone can suggest the best way
to recover...

I am moving our single Exchange server to a new machine using the ECMSM[1].
I am moving from Exchange 5.5 on NT4 to Exchange 5.5 on Windows 2000 in case
that is pertinent. I was interrupted several times for weeks at a time.
Because of this, I apparently forgot how far I had gotten with the move and
tried to remove the old server before I had completely dealt with the Public
IS move[2]. A warning when I was trying to delete the old server led me to
my error. My problem, in a nutshell, is I am unable to find a way to get the
last few dozen public folders to replicate (or say they have) so that I can
confidently delete their replicas on OldServer and then remove OldServer.

The details of the current situation are:

All public folders show their home server as NewServer and most of them were
listed as in sync on their replication tab so I have removed those replicas
on OldServer. However, I have 57 public folders that show "local modified"
for the replica on OldServer but usually with no date listed for "last
received" or a date from before (or possibly the day on which) I started the
move[3].

This notation of "Local Modified" for the OldServer replica does not change
no matter how long I wait (several days) nor whether I change from "always"
for the replication interval to "specified times" and wait well past the
specified times I set. Changing the replication interval for the entire
public folder store or the individual folders made no difference. Nor did
increasing the allowed size of replication messages.

I turned up logging to maximum on anything relating to public folders
replication and I can see indications that replication traffic is flowing
between the two servers of the free busy info mainly. But there was also a
connection sending an outgoing replication message from NewServer concerning
replication of changes to 4 of the folders still on OldServer. There was a
corresponding incoming replication event logged on OldServer but the four
folders in question still say they were local modified on OldServer. And the
date for "last received", for the folder that had one, was still quite a
while ago.

Out of the 57 folders that are not replicating there are 39 whose values for
k stored, # of items, and last access date under "Public Folder Resources"
are identical. There are 9 others for whom the replica on NewServer has
slightly more k but the same number of items. There are 6 others whose size
on OldServer is slightly larger (under 20k iirc) but again the same number
of items. There are two folders on OldServer that do not appear on NewServer
at all. One is "Events Root" and the other is "Internet Newsgroups" both are
empty on OldServer[4].

If I just export the particular folders that are marked "Local Modified" to
PST files and then remove OldServer from the network and repeat the process
and then compare the PST files will I be able to determine that everything
really did get replicated correctly and that it is safe for me to remove the
replicas from OldServer and then remove OldServer from the site? Or is there
a cleaner way around this problem (please say yes and point me to it)? I
have searched MS's site, my archives of this list (back to Jan 2002), and
the net in general with Google and not found anything that I could apply to
this problem.

I don't like just assuming that things are ok even if I compare PSTs or
something and find everything is correct on NewServer. It makes me nervous.
I'd be much happier if some skilled person here could tell me how to force
the replication (or what I need to fix to get replication working correctly
again) to sync up for both servers so that I can feel confident in my
deletion of the OldServer Replicas.

Thanks very much,

Ronni

further info which might be useless...

[1] I only have the two servers because of the move - normally I have just
the one server in, obviously, one site and the new server was added to the
same site as per normal.

[2] I also got interrupted for weeks as I was trying to correct the initial
problem so I am no longer certain what order I did things in. (Yes, I know I
should have written it down. I've already admitted I'm an idiot.) I believe
I might have tried to remove the old server before all the public folders
had been rehomed. I definitely tried to remove it before all the replicas
had been deleted from OldServer.

[3] Which would imply I might have had a problem before I ever started the
move perhaps but no one has complained about folders missing content (or
having content they shouldn't). I believe the date it lists is the date on
which I began moving the folders to NewServer but I am not positive.

[4] There is also a folder called "Article Index" which is also empty but
which I believe to be fine as is since its creation date and last accessed
date on NewServer is th

Those ndrs are filling up my queues and I think substantially slowing
down my server. Plus most of the addresses on the ndrs are invalid and
so can't be sent to them anyway.

Doesn't Exchange bounce back any type of message to the originator of
the message that the account no longer exists, though? Or really, maybe
I should say "shouldn't it?"

Create an empty DL and add all the non-existent users' SMTP addresses to
the DL's e-mail addresses.

Our head office recently laid off a couple of hundred people. I get
mail for these people every day and my server is spending a lot of time
sending NDR to the senders. Can anyone suggest a good method for
handling email coming in to non-existent users?

You could do it if you use Cisco and or Alteon Load balancing switches to
do Harware balanacing but costs may be the same as upgrading to enterprise
version of Exchange. Soemthing to consider.

This isn't a standard Cisco switch thing. You would need a Cisco load
balancer. Though I would probably look at F5 first.
BTW, these kinds of things are $$$

Thanks..actually I am about to replace my main switches...
Might you have an Idea which cisco units could do this

PS to All...Actually you can add NLB to W2K stantard..BUT you must purchase
Application Center 2000..which has NLB as one of it's components..and well
then you have to purchase sometype of license cause you are now auth to 1
but hitting many.
the cost of all this work out to be cheaper to purchase Adv Svr...

You could do it if you use Cisco and or Alteon Load balancing switches to
do Harware balanacing but costs may be the same as upgrading to enterprise
version of Exchange. Soemthing to consider.

RE: users no longer exist - what to do with their mail?

2003-09-29 Thread Exchange Discussion List
If they're substantially slowing down your server, you have really large
problems, as the processing of NDRs doesn't exactly put a heavy load on the
server.

That said, you can either add the users' old smtp addresses to an empty DL
(as someone else mentioned) so the messages will essentially go to \dev\null
or you can turn off notifications for a while. Your choice.

Re: A Challenge responded to - Review of "Achieving Process Profitabi lity"

2003-09-29 Thread Greg Deckler
Mr. Schwartz,

Thank-you for reading "Achieving Process Profitability" and giving it a
fair and honest review both here and on Amazon.com. I hope that you
enjoyed it.

I agree that "Achieving Process Profitability" does not touch on
"information" or "infrastructure". I intentionally left these out in order
to focus the book on "process", which I feel is, by far, the least
understood aspect of IT to most individuals within IT as well as the
businesses they serve. You are absolutely correct that it is difficult, if
not impossible, to build solid and useful IT systems without first having
a solid and supportable infrastructure in place. However, I feel that this
point is understood by most individuals in IT and most businesses. Whether
or not they act on their understanding is another matter, but most people
comprehend that you cannot build a house on a weak foundation.

In terms of information, the information portion of IT that must be dealt
with in businesses is the information that is an input or an output of
particular business processes. As such, if one focuses on process and on
achieving process profitability, the information about and surrounding
those processes is taken care as a matter of course. However, it is
difficult to get into specifics regarding such information because it is
so unique to each business. This probably could have been stated a little
clearer in "Achieving Process Profitability".

I believe that there are a lot more aspects of the book that are very
useful for both individuals and businesses such as the chapters on
learning and corporate memory, micro-processes, specialization and
opportunity cost. "Achieving Process Profitability" is certainly not aimed
at re-hashing TQM or ITIL but instead focused on providing a solid
foundation for how to apply those concepts to IT and transform IT within a
business from a cost center to a profit center. I believe that winning
this battle is of paramount importance and will lead to winning battles
over infrastructure spending and the like. If businesses can see and
understand that IT is a profit center for their company, then they will be
much more likely to spend the money necessary to upgrade and replace aging
infrastructure. It becomes a return on investment argument that is easily
won if IT is providing the value it should be to a business. "Oh, we have
a system that will save the company millions of dollars but it won't work
unless we upgrade our infrastructure? Done." The economic justification
for IT and IT's systems must be understood by a company first before they
will make intelligent and informed decisions regarding IT.

Again, I want to thank-you for holding up your end of the bargain. As you
stated, "Achieving Process Profitability" is a short read. I wrote it this
way because I feel that it is emminently more readable than those other
titles you mentioned and will open-up the study of process within business
to a wider audience than just those willing to read those relatively dry
tomes.

If they're substantially slowing down your server, you have really
large problems, as the processing of NDRs doesn't exactly put a heavy
load on the server.

That said, you can either add the users' old smtp addresses to an empty
DL (as someone else mentioned) so the messages will essentially go to
\dev\null or you can turn off notifications for a while. Your choice.

Those ndrs are filling up my queues and I think substantially slowing
down my server. Plus most of the addresses on the ndrs are invalid and
so can't be sent to them anyway.

Doesn't Exchange bounce back any type of message to the originator of

Create an empty DL and add all the non-existent users' SMTP addresses to
the DL's e-mail addresses.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and assistance.

Will I have to clean up \dev\null in the same way you have to manually
clean the badmail directory?

What if you turn on security event logging? Maybe that will log the change

ADC Connector issue

2003-09-29 Thread Milt Atkinson
We have installed AD on a W2k3 box and have it running in the mixed mode. We
are now trying to install E2k3 and the ADC wizard gets to step 3 and advises
that ir needs to modify the attributes of the mailboxes that we have IMS and
directory replication with, but are in other Exchange sites and we do not
have admin or service account rights to. We have an IMS connection and
exchange directory information only to these other sites and we can not
proceed with E2k3 until the wizard is satisfied.

Has anyone run into this before? Is there a work around to tell the wizard
that it only needs to modify the necessary attributes in our site and not
those with an IMS connection?

Delegate "Sent on behalf of" is not being displaying

2003-09-29 Thread Steve I
Has anyone ever seen an instance when a delegate sends an email and it
displays as "From: Delegate" and not the standard "Sent on behalf of
Delegate"? This was working fine now all of a sudden it displays the
messages as if the Delegate sent the email form their own account.

Environment is a primary Exchange 2000 Enterprise running on Windows 2000
Advanced Server. I am in the process of moving mailboxes over to a new
Exchange 2000 Cluster. I have about 90% of the company on the new cluster
and the remaining 10% still on the original server.

I have already removed the delegate permissions from the users mailbox and
then re added the delegate to the mailbox. I also made sure that the
delegate was in the "Send on behalf of" field in "AD Users and Computers"
for the user.

Could this have been screwed up by the mailbox move? Both the User and
the Delegate are in the same OU and Storage Group. Anyone have any
thoughts?

TIA
