Alright. We do not have any content filtering software on our Exchange server at this time. As most Exchange admins are aware, content filtering software can cause just as many headaches after it's been installed prior to it being installed at all. The best way to prevent unwanted spam seems to be for users NOT to give out their email address over the web (surveys, etc.), not to sign up for newsletters, not to do online ordering, and other obvious things. I'm wondering if there's a document out there that someone has used that explains these things in detail? Take the following scenario: a. Domain A b. Machine B (domain controller) where Exchange is installed. I assume this is the DC for Domain A? - Yes machine B is the domain controller for domain A c. Is it possible for me sitting on machine C, to create users in Machine B ? Create NT users or mailboxes?? Are you just asking whether you can run a program on Machine C which will be capable of associating NT accounts with mailboxes? The NT accounts will be created on the DC (not on a member server). Therefore, when you attempt to associate an NT account you will get the SID read from your DC. Since we already have NAV for the Enterprise, we have a copy of NAV for Exchange as well. This would not cost any additional funds to get this extra protection. However, I am under the impression it's always a good idea to put a different piece of antivirus software on the Exchange server as opposed to the desktop to minimize the amount of time to retrieve updated virus definitions. In other words, if I have both NAV and Trends installed and a virus breaks out, Trends may have the definitions before NAV so we'd be better covered than if we had NAV on our Exchange server. Didn't want this to get into the debate it's becoming. but: Although people's current environment is being taken care of in the most reliable manner. that's fine for right now, they've not had any problems, so they tend to become comfortable/complacent. I respect Don's and William's opinions', but every once in awhile I (as well as others i'm sure) require validation as to how they came to those opinions. and that's was the intent here. you are comfortable in your current environment, that may or may not be alright 6 months down the road. we don't know what Laura's current setup is, or what it is going to be and she asked the question. and just because the premier gurus' of the forum here, state it is or is not a good idea. RE: several domains with 1 Exchange 2000 server
Make sure the second domain new.com has MX records pointing to your Exchange 2000 server, and then create a recipient policy in Exchange System Manager for new.com. This new recipient policy should be configured to give your users the new.com SMTP address. Make sure you create a new recipient policy and don't modify the default one. RE: Evault vs. tape backups
Here is our validation... In the event something goes wrong and either of us were to call PSS (god forbid), they would most likely tell us DUDE, You are so NOT supported. The DR Whitepapers are pretty specific. There are many ways to backup an Exchange server. There are right ways and there are wrong ways. However, in order to best ensure that you are always able to recover your exchange server without losing any email, one should follow the DR steps that MS outlines and one should practice test restores. I do online backups of my exchange server with NT Backup right now. Mostly because my soon to be ex-boss uses ArcCrap to backup the network. When I migrated them from Send Mail to Exchange I specifically noted that they will NOT install ArcCrap on my Exchange server that I'll use plain old vanilla NT Backup. Do I like using NT Backup, no, not really, but I am re-evaluating our backup solution now so I can put something more reliable to me in place that backups the entire enterprise... I agree. It's a good thing that developers are always pushing the envelope, trying to find better solutions. More data is being collected, priv.edb's aren't getting smaller, disks are getting larger/faster, networks are getting faster, and disaster recovery will need to become faster and, better yet, unnecessary except in catastrophic circumstances. Can tape technology keep up? I dunno. The first 10 years of my IT career we only did disk-to-disk backups. We are also using Antigen and it DEFINITELY ROCKS!!! We previously had McAfee installed on the Exchange box. Before removing McAfee we ran a complete scan and had it clean the server. Our Exchange server currently does NOT have an Antivirus add-on installed. I would like to see some kind of scanning software on the box for additional protection. Unfortunately Trends costs about $5000 or so (we have 350 Exchange users). Has anyone used both of these products and can help me determine whether the additional cost is worth the piece of mind? Personally I'd like to see it happen and get Trends but I'm trying to justify the cost as opposed to an already-free solution. Thanks. RE: Evault vs. tape backups
doesn't really understand why all the anti-ArcServe feeling: I've not had major problems with it and get consistently good backups from which I can restore files, Exchange servers, SQL databases, PDCs etc It's their support, IMHO. ARCserve worked fine for me, too, as recently as 6.61. Back when Cheyenne Software was independent, they had good support. Then CA bought Cheyenne, and support went downhill. Lately CA has been sounding like they are building up their support infrastructure. A handy utility called "Chilton Preview" for Outlook gives you a nifty preview screen that allows you to retrieve any enclosures that Microsoft says you cannot get. RE: Customize over size limit message
Did you always listen to what your Dad told you ;-). You could re-eng Exchange (actually not much of it) but you would have to face the following questions: 1) Would MS support your version of Exchange. 2) Would you not be likely to blame any problems on your updated version. 3) Is it really worthit? IMHO the answer to all three questions is NO. So, a couple of years ago I looked for a different solution. For the people that really couldn't manage to deal with the standard messages, you intercept the oversize, non-deliveries, whatever and edit them to your design. This could run as a service on the Exchange server (like Antigen) or as an event script on mailboxes or as an Event-driven script. I have to say I never completed the work but we got as far as editing all oversize messages. It's actually quite easy to identify them. I'm happy to share the code if anyone wants to take this forward. RE: /3GB switch
imho, the /3GB switch causes problems on standard Win2000 servers. Someone sent me a MS doc talking about why you wouldn't want to run this switch on a production box - I could probably find it if anyone is interested. /3Gb seems to be much happier on Win2000 Advanced server though, it actually does something. Has anyone persuaded any version of Windows to use more than 3.1Gb of memory? The Virtual memory error is showing up every hour in the event log. The Server is E2k SP1, with about 800 users. We had a few issues with messages that got delayed in sending out to the internet, it looks like they were getting stuck in the SMTP connector. Thanks for any help! It not the /3GB switch meant for advanced servers.
