RE: Upgrading to Exchange SP2 - Problems??

2002-01-31 Thread Neil Hobson

No real problems at all. We've discovered one small issue with SP2 that
really won't affect most people; it's to do with low-bandwidth
installations, where we're seeing extra traffic generated by services
that wasn't there in SP1. SP2 has so far been stable and reliable...

Quick question and hoping for a quick response :)

Our configuration is Win2K advanced server, Exchange 2000 SP1, and
Active Directory.

We are scheduled for an upgrade to Exchange service pack 2. Has anyone
out there that has upgraded Exchange to SP2 have major problems or other
issues once the upgrade was completed?

RE: restore Public Folder

2002-01-31 Thread Neil Hobson

You could always take the backup and restore it to your recovery server.
You can then export the public folders to PST, which can then be put
back into your live system.

Hello All,

Win2ksrv sp2, Ex55 sp4

I have a problem with Public Folders on my Exchange. It apprears my
Public Folders db has gotten corrupted (although the Eseutil says it's
consistent). I was bringing up another server in the site to replace
this machine...I believe sometime in the replication process it went
bad(I have since rehomed back to original machine)...In the public
folder resources I can see all the folders(in the first machine), but
when I try to get the properties for a particular folder, I get the
message that the object in the information
store could not be found(id c1040af2). I have not been able to do a
consistent online backup either. The question I have is: I have a good
tape from last week (this came from another exchange server we took
offline-removed from site), can I restore the public folders to the new
machine and then replicate to the first?I don't want to replace priv
portion for that seems to be ok...just the pub...any ideas?

thanks,

Checking off System State as well as information stores covers it. I do
a normal file level backup in addition to this but don't include the
Exchange databases since the Exchange Agent takes care of these.

I'm looking for some specific information regarding complete backups
of an E2K server. If it helps, we are using BENT 8.6 with the Exchange

 Agent.

I realize we will backup the information stores, and also the system
states of the domain controllers. I've also read in various places
that I should backup the system state for each Exchange server, the
IIS metabase for each Exchange server, all of the exchsrvr
directories, etc. However is the metabase backed up along with a
system state backup? Do I really need to backup the exchsrvr
directories? Is there a good resource that cuts through the fluff and
just lists the specific things an E2K backup requires?

 Thanks...

I looked at Google and it says to give the delegate Owner permissions to the

Ok guys...quick question. I have an NT4 domain model and will migrate to
W2K Active Directory later this quarter. Does anyone have any comments or
issues with the particular version of W2K Server to run AD on? My first
impression is to migrate from NT4 Enterprise to W2K Server. I dont see the
need to use Advanced Server as I will have multiple DCs with fault tolerant
hardware (hence no need for clustering or NLB) on these machines. The DCs
will not have more than 2GBs of ram. Total number of users will be about
500. For these DCs, I rather save the extra money charged for Advanced
Server and put it towards the hardware or infrastructure.

Thoughts? Am I missing something?

Hi.
Does anyone have any experience with Onstream ADR50 backup drives? I'm
looking at one to back up an Exch2K server, and some other Win2K servers
and their data. Budget is extremely limited (what else is new), and
50GB of storage for under $700 looks pretty appealing.

RE: ONStream backups

2002-01-31 Thread Ellery July

I used them for short period of time. They are very slow (especially across
a network), when you get one get a few extra tapes because they may not be
making them in a couple of years.

If you are using internal only on the exchange server with a smaller
datastore (10 gig) then go for it, it should work great.

Checking off System State as well as information stores covers it. I do a
normal file level backup in addition to this but don't include the Exchange
databases since the Exchange Agent takes care of these.

 Thanks...

System Attendant Service

2002-01-31 Thread Chuck Farley

I have a new install of E2K, single domain, one DC. I
am getting the following errors in the event log:

Event ID: 1004
Microsoft Exchange System Attendant failed to start.

Event ID: 1005
Unexpected error An unknown error has occurred. ID no:
80040a01 Microsoft Exchange System Attendant
occurred.

Event ID: 9004
The Metabase Update service failed to start, error
'80040a01'.

In my searches the only thing I found relevent to
these errors is Q310896. Which suggests adding a
second DC. I'm not sure this is my problem. I'm
thinking it's a permissions issue.

Any suggestions, clues, hints?

If I have to add a second DC my only option at the
moment would be to promote my Exchange server. Is this
even an option? Good, Bad, Ok?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I am a newbie to Exchange.

dont see the need to use Advanced Server as I will
have multiple DCs with fault tolerant hardware (hence
no need for clustering or NLB) on these machines. The DCs
will not have more than 2GBs of ram. Total number of
users will be about 500. For these DCs, I rather
save the extra money charged for Advanced Server and
put it towards the hardware or infrastructure.

Installing Outlook Web Access

2002-01-31 Thread Nick Symiakakis

Hello Everyone,
I am having problems installing and configuring Oulook Web access on
my IIS4 server. This is the scenario: I followed a white paper on
installing OWA onto a seperate IIS4 server than my exchange 5.5 server. I
have IIS4 on a server that I also run Frontpage 98, which is what I am
using for our Intranet site. Frontpage is set on Port 80, and IIS4 is set
on Port 8080. I have already configured our firewall with a public address
pointing to the IIS4 root.(I tested it with a test htm page and I can
access it from outside our network). I created a virtual directory in IIS
called exchange, and point it to where the OWA files reside
(C:\exchsrvr\webdata\usa) Now that OWA is installed, how do I set it up to
locate my exchange server? Don't you have to put either your exchange
servers name or IP address somewhere on the IIS machine? I even tried to
copy the default HTM file to the IIS wwwroot folder, but it keeps popping
up the logon.asp, which comes up with errors running script. I don't know
if they are related. I have searched all over Technet, and all I get is
papers on the theory behind it, not an actual step by step setup guide.

Can anyone please shed some light on this. I appreciate all the help I can
get on this. I have been racking my brains for three days now. Thank you

 Event ID: 1005

 Event ID: 9004

In my searches the only thing I found relevent to
these errors is Q310896. Which suggests adding a
second DC. I'm not sure this is my problem. I'm
 thinking it's a permissions issue.

 Any suggestions, clues, hints?

If I have to add a second DC my only option at the
moment would be to promote my Exchange server. Is
 this
even an option? Good, Bad, Ok?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 P.S. I am a newbie to Exchange.

Moving Exchange to another domain?

2002-01-31 Thread Arthur DiSegna

I recently upgraded my network to w2k. My problem is I still have to keep
the old NT 4.0 pdc online to keep my exchange 5.5 server running because my
w2k network is a different domain. If I take my NT 4.0 pdc offline then my
exchange server has nothing to logon to and that creates problems.. I want
to be able to have my exchange server come over the new w2k domain. So far
my tries have been unsuccessful. I created the same services account in the
new domain and changed all the recipients primary accounts to the new domain
(Trust relationship). Manually changed all the services (control panel
services) usernames and passwords to the services user in the new domain.
The databases are still looking for the old domain (problem)... Anyway I
would like to be able to have Exchange 5.5 logon to the w2k domain and work
like it does currently and alow me to take down the NT 4.0 pdc.. Is there
any documentation how to do this.

Thanks In advance.

In 5.5 priv.edb will not decrease in size unless you run the ESEUTIL. On a

however the size of my PRIV.edb file on primary server does not seem to be

You need to take the store off-line and run the ESEUTIL on the
database. This will compact the database. I ran this on my small 4 GB database
and it was reduced 20%. You can run this from the mbdata folder (this will
  defrag and compact the db):
   ..\bin\eseutil /d
priv.edb Be prepared that this will create a new temp
file up to the same size as you priv.edb file. Then when the defrag and
compaction is done it will delete the original .edb file and rename the temp
file to the deleted .edb file. This is process takes a long time.

Can't access deleted items folder

2002-01-31 Thread Ryan Jensen

Hi,

We've been experiencing problems with some of our users losing access to
their Deleted Items folder. The message we get is Unable to display the
folder. There is not enough memory available on the Microsoft Exchange
Server computer to perform the operation.

We're using Exchange 5.5 SP3 on NT4 SP6. Dual P3 500 with 1GB of RAM.

We had the problem a couple of weeks ago and a reboot fixed it up. Now the
same people are experiencing it again. I plan to do a reboot to fix it for
now but I'd like to figure out what is going on.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas.

Several items already mentioned, but in addition,
as you come across to the IIS4 server, the IUSR account from the

Subject: Installing Outlook Web Access

Hello Everyone,
I am having problems installing and configuring Oulook Web access on
my IIS4 server. This is the scenario: I followed a white paper on
installing OWA onto a seperate IIS4 server than my exchange 5.5 server.
I
have IIS4 on a server that I also run Frontpage 98, which is what I am
using for our Intranet site. Frontpage is set on Port 80, and IIS4 is
set
on Port 8080. I have already configured our firewall with a public
address
pointing to the IIS4 root.(I tested it with a test htm page and I can
access it from outside our network). I created a virtual directory in
IIS
called exchange, and point it to where the OWA files reside
(C:\exchsrvr\webdata\usa) Now that OWA is installed, how do I set it up
to
locate my exchange server? Don't you have to put either your exchange
servers name or IP address somewhere on the IIS machine? I even tried to
copy the default HTM file to the IIS wwwroot folder, but it keeps
popping
up the logon.asp, which comes up with errors running script. I don't
know
if they are related. I have searched all over Technet, and all I get is
papers on the theory behind it, not an actual step by step setup guide.

Can anyone please shed some light on this. I appreciate all the help I
can
get on this. I have been racking my brains for three days now. Thank you
in advance for all of your help.

except now that page tells you to use the current dat (4184), but yesterday

He as ask me to remove exchange 5.5 from a server that is "no longer using

Does anybody have any gottchas for me. I don't really want to shoot my

AVERT page for the virus you're looking for, in this case W32/Myparty.a@MM

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99332.htm#RemovalInstructions

except now that page tells you to use the current dat (4184), but yesterday
in had a link to the extra.dat.

GG,
Please help.
I am capable of sending messages just not getting them.

I am not using an SMTP connector.
As I understand it this is not necessary.

My exchange machine is setup with an MX pointer to itself.

What could possibly cause this? Any suggestions.

MMS's signature update gets it from Tumbleweed's site (hourly pull, not push) -
they make it available quite soon after McAfee does. Believe since the McAfee
engine is embedded in the MMS product, it is like an OEM version - anyway, it
works :-)

Frankly, I think this is a bad move especially if you are a
"fill-in" and have not done it before. It is a simple process, but
why did s/he not do it? Make sure no mailboxes, public folders, or
third party apps are homes to that server.

removing exchange 5.5 from server
I'm filling in for the system admin at a
company. He as ask me to remove exchange 5.5 from a server that is "no
longer using exchange". This was the first server in a win2k
domain running exchange. He has since installed it on two other
servers and moved all the mailboxes. As a first step I have
disconnected the imc after watching the que for a while. Doesn't
seem to be any traffic on that machine. Does anybody have any
gottchas for me. I don't really want to shoot my self in the
foot.Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Oh yeah I
have to do it during business hours.

RE: removing exchange 5.5 from server

2002-01-31 Thread Rick Ward - HQ
Title: Message

Definitely read "How to Remove theFirst Exchange Server in a site"
Qarticle:Q152959 as Ellery states below. You have much more than just
mailboxes associated to the first server in a site. It holds the CALENDAR info
thatis synced when you bring up outlook, it holds most/all of the public
foldercoredata. It is also the SID master as well and bad
things can happen, if you don't follow the process of removing it cleanly. The
best check, for me, is too verify that no replicated objects are touching the
PRIV/PUB stores with any regularity. Your users "might" have blanked published
calendar events on the FREE/BUSY times. But within 10-15 minutes it should be
replicated. Usually each user has to sync there local calendars to the server on
a move like this.

When
you're ready to remove it.. make sure you focus Exchange Admin on the "new
server" and delete the old server from there.

Hope
it works out..

-Rick
