In the Exchange Admin Program go to the mailbox you need to have mail delivered FROM. Choose the Delivery Options tab, select Alternate Recipient, and choose the mailbox or custom recipient you want this delivered to. You have the option to deliver to both if necessary.

Subject: Forward all activity from a mailbox

I have a business need to forward a copy of all mail (both inbound
outbound) from an Exchange 5.5sp4 mailbox.

A copy of all mail generated by this mailbox should go to another
mailbox in the directory. The client uses OWA so client forwarding rules
will not work.

I am already sending all inbound mail to the mailbox and an alternate
recipient, but forwarding a copy of the outbound mail has me stumped.

Thank-you

how do you automatically update meeting attendees.

2002-02-13 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good morning,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4

How does a person automatically read accepted/declined/tentative messages
from meetings. I have a user that schedules hundreds of meeting a week and
doesn't really want to open all of these messages. She still is interested
in seeing how many accepted, declined or are tentative so that she can set
up. This information does not seem to be updated unless the
accepted/declined/tentative messages are opened.

Thanks for your help.

RE: NDR

2002-02-13 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

Because you don't need an MX record to send anything. Just receive. Try it
out. Set up a IIS SMTP server or anything. It will work. If your
company wants to be picky, then you can do a reverse-DNS lookup on all
incoming mail. But that just means they have to have their DNS working, and
be able to resolve the IP to the hostname for the mail server, they still
don't need an MX record. Hope this helps.

Double-take failover

2002-02-13 Thread Jeff Pace

Hello all,
I have two exchange servers that are running double-take.
Everything is fine and dandy until I test the failover. The #2 machine
takes over the identity of the #1 machine. This works fine, what doesn't
work is the login to the domain.
I lose my domain login and in result cannot pass email over the network.
When I try rebooting the #2 machine (now #1) the domain says the account
doesn't exist.

I have inherited this network and the domain was setup already. I don't
know much about how the domain works.

Servers = NT4.0 compaq proliant SP 4

exchange = 5.5

The odd thing about this situation is that I aslo have two other servers
running double-take, although not on ecxhange, and they work fine when
failed over and failed back.

TIA,
Jeff

Correct. I cannot locate anything that would indicate she's set

account and see if the problem goes away, but that would involve exporting her

  Hiya! We
have a problem user on our network and she's using Outlook 2K (I'm using
Outlook 2K2). Her busy/free data is not available so if I want to
invite her to a meeting, her data isn't showing up. In a new
calendar invite she ends up with "No information. No free/busy
information could be retrieved." I'm pretty unclear about the
details on how this works underneath. We're using Exchange 2000 SP1, no
other users experience this problem. It's like her machine is not
uploading her busy/free data, and I don't know how to make it do
that. I've recreated her profile on her local machine just as a
quick fix, but it has made no different. She doesn't get any error
messages in her Outlook saying she cannot update the busy/free data, which
is what I typically find fixes for on support.microsoft.com. Can

You will need to install the SNMP service on the server, load the
correct MIBS (Exchange MIB/PERFMIB) to pick off the counters (you will
need to compile the MIBs to generate your OID's), then build your MRTG

Can anyone give me any hints on how to achieve this ?

Hello all,
I have two exchange servers that are running double-take.

Servers = NT4.0 compaq proliant SP 4

exchange = 5.5

The odd thing about this situation is that I aslo have two other servers
running double-take, although not on ecxhange, and they work fine when
failed over and failed back.

TIA,
Jeff

Strange problem with Outlook XP and Exchange2000

2002-02-13 Thread Graeme Carstairs
Title: Message

One of
our users PCs decided to implode last week, so upon replacing the PC, we
installed office XP as per our corporate standard.

When
setting up the users outlook profile we encountered the system asking for
Username, Domain name and password. When you enter the correct username domain
and password, outlook just pops it back up again asking for the details, irf you
cancel the name and server name gets underscored, then when you try to finnish
setting up the profile it asks for the username and password
again.

The
user is logged onto the domain, you get the 3 bar logon, and login scripts
run, and everything else can be accessed over the network.

Any
help would be appreciated,

Thanks

Graeme

RE: Forward all activity from a mailbox

2002-02-13 Thread Benjamin Winzenz
Title: RE: Forward all activity from a mailbox

Not unless something has changed.
Alternate Recipients apply to inbound mail only. Unless someone else can think
of something, I don't know of a way to accomplish this without Rules.
Possibly, if a server-side rule could be configured, it would be easy enough to
log in to his mailbox with another client and accomplish that, but I don't
know if a server rule will be able to accomplish this. It might take a
client-side rule, which he has already stated can't be done because this
individual is using OWA.

RE: Event ID 125 and Event ID 193

2002-02-13 Thread robert gagne

Chris and everyone else,

I have been encountering the same problem (as Chris V.)

The first error we get in the Event Log is
MSExchangeIS (395) Unexpected Win32 error: 0x79

The next one is...Event ID 125
MSExchangeIS (395) Unable to create the log. The drive may be read-only,
out of disk space, misconfigured, or corrupted. Error -1022.

Next Event error...Event ID
An error occurred while writing to the database log file. Attempting to
stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store.

This is a new Exchange server. We added this new exchange server in order
to move all of the mailboxes off of the old one (to be retired). Our
exchange db is very small and we have plenty of disc space.

We have received these errors on 3 different occassions within the past 2
weeks. Upon receiving the first one, I checked this forum and implemented
the suggestion to exclude the exchsrvr directories in the anti virus
software (We have GroupShield and NetShield on this server). We have
received this error twice since then.

The last suggestion we have not tried yet is Todd Wood's posting in which
he spoke to Microsoft and they recommended rebuilding the server.

Anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks

We have future plans to work with another company on a few projects, and
they want some of us to use THEIR email domain. ie:

We are abc.com, and they want us to be able to send mail also as xyz.com
without handling mail for the rest of xyz.com. Can I just add an MX
record for xyz.com, as well as that company doing so (since they are
authoritative) and then accept xyz.com as inbound? I am pretty sure I
missed something since I just lost myself in this example!! Anyone have
experience with this? That is the best way to approach it.

There are a couple of Hot fixes available from Trend Micro that should
cure the problem. Open a ticket on the website and you should get the
fixes within a few hours.

Also, you might try upgrading from 3.52 to ver. 3.8. It gets rid of
AVAPI and does the scanning work via ESE. You won't have MAPI banging on
your box anymore.

Suggestion, should you update, do an UNINSTALL first, before installing
the new version of TREND.

We have a problems with ScanMail from TrendMicro doing something to the
Store.exe process that make it run at about 75% cpu all the time. It
also
causes the MTA to que up many messages, and user get very slow access
time.

We are using version 3.52 ScanMail for Exchange with the latest patch.
Exchange 5.5 sp4 Win NT 4.0 w/ sp6a

Has anyone ever had this problem in the past? We have been having it
for
about 3 months and so far the only way to resolve it is to reboot the
server.
Does any one have a developer contact name from Trend?

RE: Double-take failover

2002-02-13 Thread Jim Holmgren

I had a somewhat similar problem. When the failover computer would take
over, the alias would have trouble with my WINS server. If I removed the
old (i.e. dead) server from WINS, and let the new (Failover) server register
itself, I think it was fine (IIRC).
That might not be your exact problem, but hopefully it points you toward a
solution.

I may be wrong, but I thought I read at one point where it had been

Not unless something has changed. Alternate Recipients apply to inbound
mail only. Unless someone else can think of something, I don't know of
a way to accomplish this without Rules. Possibly, if a server-side rule
could be configured, it would be easy enough to log in to his mailbox
with another client and accomplish that, but I don't know if a server
rule will be able to accomplish this. It might take a client-side rule,
which he has already stated can't be done because this individual is
using OWA.

My servers have the correct time for their locations. All running 5.5, SP3.
No updates or patches have been installed in the past few weeks so do not

Any ideas would be appreciated !!!

Re: Strange problem with Outlook XP and Exchange2000

2002-02-13 Thread Patricia Cardoza

Is this Windows XP as well? See if the following steps help:

Try the following steps (note, these steps involve making changes to the
registry...make sure you have a good backup of the registry before trying
these steps.) Also, these steps say they are for Outlook Express, but
should also work for Outlook.

1. Quit all programs.

2. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32 in the Open box, and then click
OK.

3. Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

4. On the EDIT (security menu in win 2k) menu, click Permissions.

5. Click the registry key for the user that is currently logged on and
ensure that Read and Full Control are both set to Allow.

6. Click the Advanced button, ensure that user that is currently logged on
is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and
that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column.

7. Click to select the Reset permissions on all child objects and enable
propagation of inheritable permissions check box.

8. Click Apply, and then click Yes when you are prompted to continue.

9. Click OK, and then click OK.

10. Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the
key, click the user subkey folder that is directly below the Protected
Storage System Provider key, click Delete on the Edit menu, and then
click
Yes in the warning message dialog box.The user subkey folder looks
similar to the following example:
S-1-5-21-124525095-708259637-1543119021-16701

NOTE: For every identity that you have, there will be a subkey under the
Protected Storage System Provider key. To resolve this problem in all of
your identities, you must delete all of the user subkeys folders under the
Protected Storage System Provider key.

11. On the Registry menu, click Exit, and then restart your computer.

How to Re-Enter Your Password:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Mail or Mail and Fax.

3. Click to select Internet E-mail, and then click Properties.

4. On the Server tab, type your password in the Password box, and then
click
to select the Remember password dialog box.

5. Click OK, and then click Close.

6. Close Control Panel, and then start Outlook Express.

7. On the Tools menu, click Send and Receive to test if your password is
retained.

I am looking for a utility that can be used to generate statistical type
reports on Exchange server usage-- numbers of internal emails, external
emails (sent and received), top senders/receivers, etc...

I read about Sunbelt's MELIA but it looked like over-kill for my purposes.
Are there any purely reporting tools that are free or relatively inexpensive
that anyone can recommend?

I agree with checking your WINS servers. If you have multiple WINS servers make sure
both are clearing out the Source server after the failover.

Todd

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/13/02 09:26AM
I had a somewhat similar problem. When the failover computer would take
over, the alias would have trouble with my WINS server. If I removed the
old (i.e. dead) server from WINS, and let the new (Failover) server register
itself, I think it was fine (IIRC).
That might not be your exact problem, but hopefully it points you toward a
solution.

both PDC and BDC are running nt server 4.0 SP 6

when failover occurs, I can see the #2 server lose all connections(ie red x

when I try to reboot the #2 server with the #1 server off of the network, I

I concur there are no issues with using it in my test lab what so ever.

The issue looks to be that the #2 server doesn't have a user account for

Is the issue that when you reboot the 2nd machine and go to do an admin

Our list host (Sunbelt Software) sells this fine product.

I may be wrong, but I thought I read at one point where it had been

  Not unless something

Unless someone else can think of something, I don't know of a way to
accomplish this without Rules. Possibly, if a server-side rule could be
configured, it would be easy enough to log in to his mailbox with another
client and accomplish that, but I don't know if a server rule will be able to
accomplish this. It might take a client-side rule, which he has already

RE: Future plans 2

2002-02-13 Thread Benjamin Winzenz
Title: RE: Future plans 2

I'm just saying that you may want to
consult with your legal department. Having the permission of the owner of
the domain doesn't mean squat in the legal world. You are talking
about basically interchanging internal company information. That, plus
you don't have a plan in place how you want to accomplish this. The
owner of the domain may not realize the scope of a project like this, which may
not even be possible. In your given scenario below, if you were to add an
MX record for their domain and accept it as inbound, you would HAVE to have a
way to route the messages destined for their employees. Otherwise, mail
is going to bounce. Why? Because the way that MX records work is
that the server with the lowest cost gets most of the messages sent to
it. There will be some messages that get sent to the other server.
There isn't any way around this. That means that you will be
receiving mail for possibly ANY person working at the other company. You
get a message for a person at the other company, and your Exchange server doesn't
know what the hell to do with it. You don't have any recipients
with that name set up. Ends up being very messy.

I was thinking earlier about setting up
custom recipients for them, but that too would end up being messy, and I don't
think it would work. They could, however, set up some mailboxes and custom
recipients for you, have the mailbox deliver mail to the custom recipient and
have those custom recipients forward the mail to your server. That, or
setting up some mailboxes for you and you using OWA, would be by far the
easiest, if not the only, solutions to what you are asking. Anything else
is sounding more like a consulting gig to find a solution to your problem.

If they are so insistent on you using
their e-mail, why don't they provide the solution? Otherwise, tell
them to go with the above-mentioned OWA, or forward your mail via CR's,
and let you reply using your own addy's.

You can adjust the time delay from when the server fails to when it actually assumes

Subject: Double-take failover

Hello all,
I have two exchange servers that are running double-take.

Servers = NT4.0 compaq proliant SP 4

exchange = 5.5

The odd thing about this situation is that I aslo have two other servers
running double-take, although not on ecxhange, and they work fine when
failed over and failed back.

TIA,
Jeff

RE: spam control

2002-02-13 Thread Toni, Randy

Another vote for Mail Marshal. It slices, it dices, it even makes Julienne
fries - why, just look at that tomatouuuh, maybe that's the Ronco
Mail-O-Matic that I'm thinking of?

Sorry - I think I just had a non-maskable interrupt. Yeah, I like Mail
Marshal - not particularly just for spam but also for all the other great
features. I don't have anywhere near the degree of Exchange expertise that
you find here on this list, so it's nice to have an easy-to-setup-and-use
system in front of the Exchange server that let's me completely customize
how I want to
handle/forward/quarantine/kill/modify/return/notify/quantify/report/relay/bl
ah blah blah... in test it has been working like a charm.

Trend also gets a lot of great reviews on the list(s). Beyond spam - and
regardless of what product you may choose - it can be another layer of
defence. I sat a Marshal test box behind our existing SMTP relay (proxy
service) for some initial testing and one day about 42 instances of my
party blew right by that proxy (bug!) where it should have died, but got
hammered by Mail Marshal before even touching Exchange - and at least a few
got in before our client AV sigs got rolled across the site. Granted, an
Exchange pro could set it up to do a lot of this right at the server as well
- and maybe the 3rd party is overkill in some situations - but for me (a
highly paranoid aspiring semi-pro), it's a solid, easy to use, completely
customizable email pre-processing plant that adds another layer of
security.

As for spam itself, lots of (most?) spam is end-user self-induced. I don't
know if I would push for any (possibly expensive) 3rd party solution just
for the sake of spam elimination - especially given that we don't get
anywhere near what others on this list have talked about in the past. A big
flood of spam might change that attitude pretty quick, but fortunately the
3rd party stuff out front makes my life a lot easier if when that becomes
necessary.

Thanks

Robert Gagne
(I apologize my first posting did not include the previous replies)

Any other thoughts. and ps thanks for the help so far

I just went through this issue. Microsoft believes it was the virus
scanning software (CA) and the non-aware backups attempting to backup the
database, even though the backups were not running at the time the services
stopped. We configured the virus software (non-exchange aware) not to scan
the exchsrvr directories. After resolving the issue, Microsoft recommended
rebuilding the server due to this issue and other issues in the past. I'm
not telling you to rebuild it but prevent your non-exchange aware virus
software from scanning your exchange directories. Once we did that the
services didn't fail, but we did rebuild it anyway due to other issues.

Re: spam control

2002-02-13 Thread Don Andrews

I'd agree with the 3rd party - we have various internal systems (MVS,
Tandem, most flavors of unix, various web servers in addition to our
primary end users mail system) that can send and in many cases receive
internet mail - our 3rd party system sits between all these and our
internet facing sendmail relays - does virus scanning, content
(including spam) filtering, attachment blocking, S/MIME proxying etc.
for all of them. The only thing not handled by an external 3rd party
system is cleaning up internal mailboxes should a virus get in somehow.

Since you use OWA couldn't you setup the account in Outlook on a local
desktop, such as yours, and set a rule there? Even thought the
user is using OWA this might work. Also, do you have this setup on the
IMS to allow forwarding to the outside world?

Not unless
something has changed. Alternate Recipients apply to inbound mail
only. Unless someone else can think of something, I don't know of a
way to accomplish this without Rules. Possibly, if a server-side rule
could be configured, it would be easy enough to log in to his mailbox with
another client and accomplish that, but I don't know if a server rule will
be able to accomplish this. It might take a client-side rule, which he
has already stated can't be done because this individual is using
OWA.

  In
the Exchange Admin Program go to the mailbox you need to have mail
delivered FROM. Choose the Delivery Options tab, select Alternate
Recipient, and choose the mailbox or custom recipient you want this

That
is the best answer I have received, and you are right. I have no idea how to
implement this without dropped mail to nonhomed recipients here OR there. I will
discuss with them the different options that truly seem
available:

They home the mailboxes and we use OWA to use
  their domain
  there
is a LEGAL partnership in which we act as connected sites, only passing THEIR
  address book
I have
not found another way around this, nor have I heard a good alternative
otherwise

  Future plans 2

  I'm just saying that
you may want to consult with your legal department. Having the
permission of the owner of the domain doesn't mean squat in the legal
world. You are talking about basically interchanging internal company
information. That, plus you don't have a plan in place how you want to
accomplish this. The owner of the domain may not realize the scope of a
project like this, which may not even be possible. In your given
scenario below, if you were to add an MX record for their domain and accept it
as inbound, you would HAVE to have a way to route the messages destined for
their employees. Otherwise, mail is going to bounce. Why?
Because the way that MX records work is that the server with the lowest cost
gets most of the messages sent to it. There will be some messages that
get sent to the other server. There isn't any way around this.
That means that you will be receiving mail for possibly ANY person working at
the other company. You get a message for a person at the other company,
and your Exchange server doesn't know what the hell to do with it. You
don't have any recipients with that name set up. Ends up being very
  messy.

  I was thinking
earlier about setting up custom recipients for them, but that too would end up
being messy, and I don't think it would work. They could, however, set
up some mailboxes and custom recipients for you, have the mailbox deliver mail
to the custom recipient and have those custom recipients forward the mail to
your server. That, or setting up some mailboxes for you and you using
OWA, would be by far the easiest, if not the only, solutions to what you are
asking. Anything else is sounding more like a consulting gig to find a
  solution to your problem.

  If they are so
insistent on you using their e-mail, why don't they provide the
solution? Otherwise, tell them to go with the above-mentioned OWA, or
forward your mail via CR's, and let you reply using your own
  addy's.

Hello all,
I have two exchange servers that are running double-take.

Servers = NT4.0 compaq proliant SP 4

exchange = 5.5

The odd thing about this situation is that I aslo have two other servers

running double-take, although not on ecxhange, and they work fine when
failed over and failed back.

TIA,
Jeff

I'm just saying that you
may want to consult with your legal department. Having the permission of
the owner of the domain doesn't mean squat in the legal world. You are
talking about basically interchanging internal company information. That,
plus you don't have a plan in place how you want to accomplish this. The
owner of the domain may not realize the scope of a project like this, which may
not even be possible.
That means that you will be receiving
mail for possibly ANY person working at the other company. You get a
message for a person at the other company, and your Exchange server doesn't
know what the hell to do with it. You don't have any recipients with that
name set up. Ends up being very messy.

I was thinking earlier
about setting up custom recipients for them, but that too would end up being
messy, and I don't think it would work. They could, however, set up some
mailboxes and custom recipients for you, have the mailbox deliver mail to the
custom recipient and have those custom recipients forward the mail to your server.
That, or setting up some mailboxes for you and you using OWA, would be by far
the easiest, if not the only, solutions to what you are asking. Anything
else is sounding more like a consulting gig to find a solution to your problem.

If they are so insistent
on you using their e-mail, why don't they provide the solution?
Otherwise, tell them to go with the above-mentioned OWA, or forward your mail
via CR's, and let you reply using your own addy's.

Other than this type of plan, there will be nothing
that will not take a large amount of time and effort to do. You may not
even legally be able to do more than this. Check with your legal

We have future plans to work with another company on a
few projects, and they want some of us to use THEIR email domain. ie:

We are abc.com, and they want us to be able to send
mail also as xyz.com without handling mail for the rest of xyz.com. Can I just
add an MX record for xyz.com, as well as that company doing so

Hello all, I have two exchange
servers that are running double-take. Everything is
fine and dandy until I test the failover. The #2 machine
takes over the identity of the #1 machine.
This works fine, what doesn't work is the login to
the domain. I lose my domain login and in result
cannot pass email over the network.
When I try rebooting the #2 machine (now #1) the domain says
the account
doesn't exist.
I have inherited this network and the domain was setup
already. I don't
know much about how the domain works.
Servers = NT4.0 compaq proliant SP 4
exchange = 5.5
The odd thing about this situation is that I aslo have two
other servers
running double-take, although not on ecxhange, and they work
fine when failed over and failed back.

RE: spam control

2002-02-13 Thread Allen Crawford

I sort of agree, but I have (had) an @home.com email address and only had it
because I was a cable modem subscriber. I never used this address for
anything other than checking it once a month for my billing information.
Guess what? I get about 8 junk emails each day on that account now. I know
that I never filled out any form anywhere with it. So, I'm guessing that
good old bankrupt @home sold it. I guess that probably wouldn't happen with
any of our companies since we wouldn't sell the address, but it wouldn't be
difficult for that address to get leaked out by someone else or through a
business card or something like that.

As for third-party spam-control software, we currently use nothing. I find
it hard to justify the cost because not everyone receives the spam or as
much as others. I typically get about 5-10 a day here myself, but I've
filled out countless forms for product evaluations and such. Shift+Delete
works fine for me, just a bit annoying is all. I am considering evaluating
eManager to go with our ScanMail, but I'm in no hurry. In the meantime, I
just keep adding domains to block when they are obviously not a company we
plan on doing business with anytime soon. Em5000.net, 0mbranetworking.com,
optinmembers.com, stuff like that...

We receive data attachments from clients to enter into our own database, and to verify that data, we have the app force an email to KNOWN regulatory email addresses to verify that the data is valid. The app is a great spam stomper to boot, so I am happy.

If you have other reasons to purchase it Mail Marshal will do this too. Too
expensive as just a reporting tool though.

Subject: Looking Exchange server usage reporting tool

I am looking for a utility that can be used to generate
 statistical type
reports on Exchange server usage-- numbers of internal
 emails, external
emails (sent and received), top senders/receivers, etc...

I read about Sunbelt's MELIA but it looked like over-kill for
 my purposes.
Are there any purely reporting tools that are free or
 relatively inexpensive
 that anyone can recommend?

We here at the Dogg Foundation LOVE the packeteer. A very power
inexpensive product. The favorite thing to do it have morphius packets
redueced to 1k.. It is fun to watch people keep trying.
