From John: (By the waythanks in

Is
the OWA the only thing running on the IIS? Usually, default IIS
install will have a "default website" with Exchange being a virtual
under that. You can have the virtual on ssl OR/AND http, and the
parent being one or both or either. They are not linked.

We have a web site running as the
default web site. It is set up using anonymous access and no encryption.
Exchange is a virtual folder under it, using Basic Authentication. I've
been testing some of the time with SSL required and sometimes
not.It will be running on SSLbefore I announce OWA to the
world.

Server
listening on 443 does not necessarily mean that the IIS is doing
it.

OK

In the IIS on the OWA server, is
the virtual for exchange pointing into the proper exchsrvr dir on the
55sp4 box? Does it have rights into that dir? The OWA
webaccess dir is/should be: c:\exchsrvr\webdata (ymmv). If
local, then no share needed on the Ex box. If using a separate IIS
server, then you'll have to have the dir shared.

 I'm pretty sure this
is set up correct. The web access directory is right and I am able to
accessmy mailbox using http. It seems everything from the OWA
server to the Exchangeserver is
OK.

If you want the
ssl, then the owa server MUST be addresses with https. If the
"cannot find server" comes up on https but not http, then I would start
looking at whether or not the IIS is ssl enabled for the Exchange
virtual site.

 I'vechecked
"Require secure channel (SSL)" in the Secure Communications dialog box
of the Exchange virtual directory. Is there anything else I'm missing to
enable SSL?

http://10.x.x.xgets you IIS default site or OWA?

 Sorry, I was pretty
unclear.
http://10.x.x.x gets me to the default
website.
http://10.x.x.x/exchange tells me I
must use a secure connection.
If I uncheck the "Require secure
channel" box, http://10.x.x.x/exchange gets me
OWA, and after logging in, I get to the Exchange
server.

https://10.x.x.x/exchange brings up a
dialog box noting an untrusted certificate. This is expected and normal
as the certificate is coming from my own Certificate Server (actually,
the same OWA box). After I accept the certificate, the next screen is
the "Cannot find server or DNS error". If I try a refresh, IE just spins
forever. A new browser window will repeat the
process.

I've tried a full reinstall of
IIS, OWA and Cert Server, but I've got the same problem, so it must be a
configuration issue.

Try inside the domain first. And start with straight IP.
https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/exchange
You SHOULD get a message regarding the validity of your cert, depending on how it got
setup.
If this works, you at least know it is working internally to the collision domain.
Past that, by chance are you setup right on the router/firewall level?

I brought this one up last week and although I've researched and followed the advice I
received, I'm still stuck.

I've got OWA up and running fine on straight http, but I can't connect using https.
The browser returns the message Can't find server or DNS error. DNS is OK so it
seems that either the server isn't listening on 443, or the server is ignoring my
workstation due to some certificate problem.

I've tried everything I can find including Q228821, Q234022, Q265847, Q290391, Q292296
and Q301428.

Netstat -an shows the server listening on Port 443. I've deleted all certificates on
the browsing computer, but it doesn't seem to be getting new ones.

Environment:
Exchange Server NT 4.0 SP6a Exchange 5.5 SP4 Member Server
OWA Server2000 Server SP2 OWA 5.5 SP4Member Server
Workstation 2000 Pro SP2 IE 6 w/ Latest Patches

I'm usually pretty good at resolving this kind of stuff with the help of books and MS,

OK here is my situation.
Server1 - Win2k box exchange 5.5 in Win2k native mode domain (domain1)
w/all SP upgrades etc. want to move everything to domain2 also Win2k
native mode domain.

wondering if it would be better to build a new Win2k server in domain 2
and try migrating everything over or if I should just migrate server1
over to domain2

I was wondering if anyone had any stories on this, or a good FAQ or tech

Most places say MS doesn't recommend this. I have found some info on

  The
  most simplistic way:

  1.
Exmerge out all data, and Public Folders if any (manually
  exporting)
  2.
  Uninstall Exchange 2000
  3.
Show Advanced In AD Sites/Services, AD Users, AD Domains/Trusts - Delete all
  Exchange Information
  4.
Install Exchange 2000 on new server
  5.
Reimport data back into users folders
  6.
Be sure users mailboxes are connected (system manager,server...mailboxes) and
  data has been imported
  7.
Notify existing users of new server change to modify the
  profile
  8.
rollout ... rollout rollout .. my homies.. rollout .. (ghetto
  music)

2002-06-26 Thread McCready, Robert

OK. I changed the Calendar options Publish setting to 0 months, and
indeed, you now can not see what is on the users calendar that you are
trying to schedule an appointment with. But, what I'm trying to do is get
that calendar blocked out entirely, so it is impossible to even send the
person a meeting request. I don't think it can be done. I looked under the
rules wizard, but I don't see anything that would identify a meeting
request that is coming in.

I'm confused. Are they Making Meetings? That just sends a request for a
meeting that is either accepted or denied by the recipient.

Are they able to write directly on the calendars? They should not have more
than Review rights to each others calendars.

If people aren't placing things in their calendars because they are personal
(but still happen during work hours) they should learn to use the little
private check mark for their calendar items. This then only shows on
free/busy that you are NOT AVAILABLE during that period. It gives no other
information.

If they don't want to share their free/busy information then go into
Calendar options and set it to Publish 0 (zero) months.

I know it's a bad idea, but for some reason if we don't backup on the
weekends which we usually don't, some of our clients fill up 3-5 gigs of
hard disk space. So I had to turn it on in a few places. I don't manage
huge (over 250) user bases in exchange for most of our clients, so not
sure how important it is for more simple installations. In ex5.5 Ive
never had a problem restoring w/o the logs, and luckily havent had to do
one yet on e2k. Im sure more people will elaborate as to the nightmares

We all know it works .. That's not the question. The question is what
paper MCSE+I student is consulting them stating it is a good idea.
Especially since he/she is also getting less work out of it by only
installing one server and not two. You may really want to re-consider
your consultant as not just uninformed but a bad business person that
probably wont be around for too much longer :).

If I had my choice I would probably put 3 servers in every client we do.
Considering even a base server of any importance is 2-3k, and our
installation is about 2k, it gets pricey pretty quick and not everyone
can afford it. I could always find ms papers to support putting
everything on its own server. I would be hard pressed to find one that
recommends all-in-one. Oh wait! I could sell SBS 2000 :)

Subject: Search utility for header info??

Greetings all:

I have a fairly basic question here since I'm an interim Exchange
administrator (have done some of the basic server check/account
management stuff but the primary EA left in a hurry - and unlike
most of my sysadmin cohorts, I've actually had Exchange training).

Environment: Exchange 5.5, SP4, on NT4 SP6a machines

I got asked if there was some way we could check through Information
Stores for messages with a particular text in the subject. I ask
around,
call Microsoft, and learn about Exmerge for subject line and attachment
search. I run a quick test and it performs as promised. Schweet!

So of course the next question is ... Can we search the IS by sender,
or recipient. Cohort thinks he finds something in EA and tests it
out ... only to be advised that message logging needs to be on for
this to work. We have a ~10K user GAL and our servers have space
problems as it is. We _don't_ want to turn logging on. I may be
dumb but I'm not entirely stupid.

I checked the website of Our Beloved Sponsor and saw a few products that
might fit the bill ... but of course they cost money. Possibly lots of
money since we have such a big environment. I'll check with
our sunbelt rep for the details and advise TPTB what that functionality
might cost them but in the meantime:

Does anyone know of a good and preferably inexpensive tool that does
searches on an IS similar to the Outlook search function without
having message logging turned on? Currently I'm looking for header
search type stuff, although I'm sure that if I came up with something
for that, they'd ask about body text.

Apologies if this was covered recently - I've been subscribed for a week
or so but have not had time to slog through the archives yet (having
trouble keeping up with the current volume, actually ... even in the
digest single-daily-dose. But tell me to do BLBs and the fish tacos get
it ;-).

We are looking for a new server/Exchange admin, so if you're within
commute distance of beautiful downtown Oakland and looking for a new
gig, mail me privately and I'll point you at the listing.

RE: Circular logging?

2002-06-26 Thread Kevin Miller

A mail box server will benefit for the ability to have a roll forward
recovery. Where you can restore from Back then roll the current logs
from the time of back up against the database. Thus loosing no data. A
gateway server that has no mailboxes on it, And is only really doing
routing or relaying does not need to have that ability, in that case
Circular logging is recommended.

For what you are doing circular logging is bad. Just go get another
drive.

Charlotte,

Check at www.slipstick.com. If you don't find anything, check back. You're
simply after a tool that can run through the IS mailboxes for a particular
sender or recipient, right? That should be quite easy to code. I'll give it
a crack if you can't find anything on slipstick

OK. I changed the Calendar options Publish setting to 0 months, and
indeed, you now can not see what is on the users calendar that you are
trying to schedule an appointment with. But, what I'm trying to do is
get that calendar blocked out entirely, so it is impossible to even send
the person a meeting request. I don't think it can be done. I looked
under the rules wizard, but I don't see anything that would identify a
meeting request that is coming in.

I'm confused. Are they Making Meetings? That just sends a request for
a meeting that is either accepted or denied by the recipient.

Are they able to write directly on the calendars? They should not have
more than Review rights to each others calendars.

If people aren't placing things in their calendars because they are
personal (but still happen during work hours) they should learn to use
the little private check mark for their calendar items. This then only
shows on free/busy that you are NOT AVAILABLE during that period. It
gives no other information.

If they don't want to share their free/busy information then go into
Calendar options and set it to Publish 0 (zero) months.

Document actions for Senior Management.
Implement Auto-Delete rule as described below, IF the options are

Rules Wizard(in OL2000, mind... may also be in OL98):
When messages arrive from _User1_ using the _Appointment_ Form, perform
action on message (delet, auto-deny, etc.)

HOWEVER, this doesn't address how the system is supposed to recognize if
it
is or is not a valid appointment request.

A MUCH better solution would be to modify User2's behaviour and explain
to
them what the PRIVATE setting on appointments does. IOW, don't try to
make
the system make judgement calls that the User should be making.

Outlook 98, Exchange 5.5 SP4, NT 4.0 SP6a.

Is it possible to block User 1 from trying to make an appointment on
User
2's calendar? We have a few management employees (User 2) that do not
put
EVERYTHING they do on their calendar, and they
would prefer not to have other people trying to make an appointment on
their

calendar, thinking that they
are free, when actually they aren't. Yes, the easiest thing to do is to

deny the request, but is there a way to block their calendar from even
showing up when someone tries to request a meeting?

Thanks.

Sherry,
Ihad the samedilemma a few months ago when I moved to
a new Exchange server. Don't sweat keeping the same server name,
use the "Ed Crowley Method" that William's link points to. I can
certainly testify that it is indeed "a beautiful thing".

YourPOP users may experience momentary discomfort (changing
server names, but no big deal really)but MAPI clients (like
Outlook)do indeed automagically find their mailboxes on the new
server, plus you can take your time moving the boxes over. That in
itself is a luxury we get to enjoy all too seldom.

I put my new server online, made sure I had it fully patched and
configured, moved my mailbox first- strictly for testing connectivity of
course ;-) then after a few days started moving user mailboxesin
massquantitiesover night.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

  Is
the OWA the only thing running on the IIS? Usually, default IIS
install will have a "default website" with Exchange being a virtual
under that. You can have the virtual on ssl OR/AND http, and the
parent being one or both or either. They are not linked.

We have a web site running as the
default web site. It is set up using anonymous access and no
encryption. Exchange is a virtual folder under it, using Basic
Authentication. I've been testing some of the time with SSL required
and sometimes not.It will be running on SSLbefore I
  announce OWA to the
  world.

Server listening on 443 does not necessarily mean that
  the IIS is doing it.

If using a separate
IIS server, then you'll have to have the dir shared.

   I'm pretty sure this
is set up correct. The web access directory is right and I am able to
accessmy mailbox using http. It seems everything from the OWA
  server to the Exchangeserver is
  OK.

  If you want the
ssl, then the owa server MUST be addresses with https. If the
"cannot find server" comes up on https but not http, then I would
start looking at whether or not the IIS is ssl enabled for the
  Exchange virtual site.

I'vechecked "Require secure channel (SSL)" in the Secure
Communications dialog box of the Exchange virtual directory. Is there
anything else I'm missing to enable
  SSL?

http://10.x.x.xgets you IIS default site or OWA?

   Sorry,
  I was pretty unclear.
http://10.x.x.x gets me to the default
  website.
  http://10.x.x.x/exchange tells me
  I must use a secure
  connection.
  If I uncheck the
"Require secure channel" box, http://10.x.x.x/exchange gets me
OWA, and after logging in, I get to the Exchange
  server.

  https://10.x.x.x/exchange brings up
a dialog box noting an untrusted certificate. This is expected and
normal as the certificate is coming from my own Certificate Server
(actually, the same OWA box). After I accept the certificate, the next
screen is the "Cannot find server or DNS error". If I try a refresh,
IE just spins forever. A new browser window will repeat the
  process.

  I've tried a full
reinstall of IIS, OWA and Cert Server, but I've got the same problem,
so it must be a configuration issue.

First Exchange 2000 server in Exchange 5.5 environment (on 2K domain)?

2002-06-26 Thread Jay Libove

Hello -

I have an Exchange 5.5 environment currently, with one Exchange 5.5 server
on an NT 4.0 server, and another Exchange 5.5 server on a Windows 2000
Advanced Server. The domain is running in mixed mode with the Windows 2000
Advanced Server as the Domain Controller and the NT 4.0 server as an old
NT 4.0 domain Backup Domain Controller.

I intend to add my first Exchange 2000 (Enterprise) server to this
environment.

At first, I want to test it by adding an Exchange 2000 server on to
another Windows 2000 Advanced Server, so that I can create a test mailbox
on the new Exchange 2000 server, work with it, then migrate real mailboxes
to it.

What advice would you folks give me as to anything special I need to do to
add my first Exchange 2000 Enterprise server to this environment? Or is it
as easy as just install the Exchange 2000 Enterprise server on a Windows
2000 Advanced server system, and tell it to join the existing Exchange
environment?

Many thanks!
-Jay

Try inside the domain first. And start with straight IP. https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/exchange
You SHOULD get a message regarding the validity of your cert, depending on how it got setup.
If this works, you at least know it is working internally to the collision domain.
Past that, by chance are you setup right on the router/firewall level?

I've got OWA up and running fine on straight http, but I can't connect using https. The browser returns the message Can't find server or DNS error. DNS is OK so it seems that either the server isn't listening on 443, or the server is ignoring my workstation due to some certificate problem.

I've tried everything I can find including Q228821, Q234022, Q265847, Q290391, Q292296 and Q301428.

Netstat -an shows the server listening on Port 443. I've deleted all certificates on the browsing computer, but it doesn't seem to be getting new ones.

Environment:
Exchange Server NT 4.0 SP6a Exchange 5.5 SP4 Member Server
OWA Server

   Hey guys,

Let's slow down a bit and talk about relaying - The good, the
bad, the
ugly...

Yes, relaying is good for road warriors as with it they can
send as well as
receive mail while on the road, using any dialup connection to the Internet.

The problem is spammers using these open relays - Or even
hijacking improperly
closed relays - to flood junk mail all over the place... With YOUR header on
it!

What you want (and what I provide my customers) is
*authorized* relaying. This
means that only people who are authorized - Authenticated - can send mail.
Outsiders (including spammers) are blocked, because they can't authenticate
against an NT Domain.

If you's guys would only make a few mouse clicks in Exchange
Admin to secure
your server instead of wasting keystrokes in a pissing contest...

   Anyway, punch up:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/exchange/relay.asp and follow the steps
about halfway down (starting at screen 2 up through screen 4); and you'll be
fine. For reference, take a look at

Repost: Win2k and NT4.0 Domains Exchanging Mail

2002-06-26 Thread Brian Politis

I didn't get a response the first time. Thought I might try again...

I need to consolidate two separate email domains to a single domain. The
configuration is as follows:

Domain 1. Company.com
 NT4.0 Domain
   Exchange 5.5 SP4 (6 Servers in 6 sites)
 1000 users

Domain 2. Sales.Company.com
   W2K
Exchange 2000 (Singe Site, Single Server)
 100 users

The situation is as follows the company.com domain is a large
established domain with 1,000 users. There is a plan to convert it to
Windows 2000 next year. So upgrading it to 2000 today is not going to
happen until the larger Win2K migration occurs and Active Directory is
rolled out.

Sales.Company.com sprung up as a rogue site without authority from the
corporate IT group, but the office has done well, and now politically in
the organization has some clout. They setup as Win2K from the get go,
and only have about 100 users. The corporate IT group doesn't really
want this to happen, but I've been asked to push through the following:

1. everyone in both domains needs a company.com email address
2. A single global address list replicating between both sites 3.
Public Folder replication between the two sites 4. We can't put up a
domain trust between the two domains (political
reasons)

How would you do this? I am not extremely familiar with the Active
Directory Connector (or even Exchange2K), but it's my understanding it
can be setup to talk with exchange 5.5 without setting up a domain
trust. Will it also allow the GAL to replicate properly? Last does
anyone know a way to replicate the public folders?

I've seen some references to ADC sucking on the list, are we about to
go down a road we shouldn't. Even if we get it working will this be
problematical in the future? I don't want to get stuck with a solution
that only works part of the time.

Thanks,
Brian Politis

Yes a month has flown by already.

So on the topic of defragmentations, exchange does this nightly because it
is awesome. Got that part. Now if I have 2GB of free space after this
nightly process takes place, that is all white space that exchange uses
before the priv.edb would grow larger? Is this an accurate statement or way

Steve,

Your
certserv is the OWA box? 2K?
What name
did you give the cert for 'common name?'
It may be
nothing, but it should match the OWA box not the Exch box.

Also, is
the IIS box sitting in the DMZ? If so, you may need to twiddle the
firewall to get this to work.

From John: (By the way thanks in advance)
Is the OWA the only thing running on the IIS?
Usually, default IIS install will have a "default website" with Exchange being
a virtual under that. You can have the virtual on ssl OR/AND http, and
the parent being one or both or either. They are not linked.
We have a web site running as the default web site. It is
set up using anonymous access and no encryption. Exchange is a virtual folder
under it, using Basic Authentication. I've been testing some of the time with
SSL required and sometimes not. It will be running on SSL before I announce
  OWA to the world.
Server listening on 443 does not necessarily mean that
  the IIS is doing it.
   OK
In the IIS on the OWA server, is the virtual for
exchange pointing into the proper exchsrvr dir on the 55sp4 box? Does it
have rights into that dir? The OWA webaccess dir is/should be:
c:\exchsrvr\webdata (ymmv). If local, then no share needed on the Ex
box. If using a separate IIS server, then you'll have to have the dir
  shared .
I'm pretty sure this is set up correct. The web access
directory is right and I am able to access my mailbox using http. It seems
everything from the OWA server to the Exchange server is OK.
If you want the ssl, then the owa server MUST be addresses
with https. If the "cannot find server" comes up on https but not http,
then I would start looking at whether or not the IIS is ssl enabled for the
  Exchange virtual site .
I've checked "Require secure channel (SSL)" in the Secure
Communications dialog box of the Exchange virtual directory. Is there anything
else I'm missing to enable SSL?
http://10.x.x.x http://10.x.x.x gets you IIS default site or OWA?

Sorry, I was pretty unclear. http://10.x.x.x gets me to the
default website. http://10.x.x.x/exchange tells me I must use a secure
connection. If I uncheck the "Require secure channel"
box, http://10.x.x.x/exchange gets me OWA, and after logging in,
I get to the Exchange server.
  https:// https://10.x.x.x/exchange 10.x.x.x/exchange brings up a
dialog box noting an untrusted certificate. This is expected and normal as the
certificate is coming from my own Certificate Server (actually, the same OWA
box). After I accept the certificate, the next screen is the "Cannot find
server or DNS error". If I try a refresh, IE just spins forever. A new browser
  window will repeat the process.
I've tried a full reinstall of IIS, OWA and Cert Server, but
I've got the same problem, so it must be a configuration issue.

OWA problems

2002-06-26 Thread Jason Juillerat

--
After logging onto OWA I am getting the error message 'HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server
Error'

--

I appear to be logging on to the server, because the left side of the OWA screen
shows my inbox, contacts, etc.
The large right window displays the error- HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error and I
am unable to view mail items or contacts, but the calendar view is working.
This error occurs when logging on from internal as well as external clients.

My clients are win2k and win98 using assorted versions of IE.
I do not have friendly IE error messages turned on.
Browsing locally on the box fails with the same error.

My server is a front-end Exchange 2000 sp2 box that relays incoming/outgoing mail and
supports SSL connections to OWA.
I am using the IIS lockdown tool.

The box is on the inside of a firewall only allowing port 25 and 443 connections to
the server.
ftp, telnet, etc services are disabled. wwwpub and the proper exchange services
appear to be running.

There have been no recent changes to the server (this was working last night)
The server has been stable.
neither event logs or iis logs are being particularly enlightening

This error is so general I am having trouble finding anything relevant on Google Web
or Groups.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Jason,

You mentioned the IIS lockdown tool and you mention that nothing has
changed. When was the lockdown tool applied? Did you happen to lockdown
your ASP scripting capabilities as well. The lockdown tool is notorious for
breaking OWA installs...

--
After logging onto OWA I am getting the error message 'HTTP/1.1 500 Internal
Server Error'

--

I appear to be logging on to the server, because the left side of the OWA
screen shows my inbox, contacts, etc. The large right window displays the
error- HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error and I am unable to view mail
items or contacts, but the calendar view is working. This error occurs when
logging on from internal as well as external clients.

My clients are win2k and win98 using assorted versions of IE.
I do not have friendly IE error messages turned on.
Browsing locally on the box fails with the same error.

My server is a front-end Exchange 2000 sp2 box that relays incoming/outgoing
mail and supports SSL connections to OWA. I am using the IIS lockdown tool.

The box is on the inside of a firewall only allowing port 25 and 443
connections to the server. ftp, telnet, etc services are disabled. wwwpub
and the proper exchange services appear to be running.

There have been no recent changes to the server (this was working last
night) The server has been stable. neither event logs or iis logs are being
particularly enlightening

This error is so general I am having trouble finding anything relevant on
Google Web or Groups.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Yes a month has flown by already.

So on the topic of defragmentations, exchange does this nightly because
it is awesome. Got that part. Now if I have 2GB of free space after this
nightly process takes place, that is all white space that exchange uses
before the priv.edb would grow larger? Is this an accurate statement or
way off?

Groupwise Migration and tasks

2002-06-26 Thread Jonathan Schober

I've run into a problem during two GW to Exchange migrations.

Both migrations were fairly small organizations. Coexistance was not an issue, so we
simply ran the GW migration tool. In both instances, things went fairly smooth using
the GW Migration tool, however, the tasks didn't seem to come across correctly. In
fact, the tasks didn't come across at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Defrag

2002-06-26 Thread Steven Peck DNET

I call upon you all to witness the effect and impact of a D'oh!
Furthermore, please note that the auto-d'oh has a faster and less
recoverable impact. :)

Imagine, if you will a man, a normal man arriving to work after a pleasant
night. Totally unaware what fate has bestowed upon him. As he opens his
mail and discovers to his horror that his name has become known far and
wide.

PSS? I have never had the issue you describe. The hardest
thing I've ever had to do to get OWA running was to make sure the everyone group

  The

After rerunning URLScan everything is working from
other subnets and from outside the firewall. It's still not working from this

Your
certserv is the OWA box? 2K?
What
name did you give the cert for 'common name?'
It may
be nothing, but it should match the OWA box not the Exch
box.

Also,
is the IIS box sitting in the DMZ? If so, you may need to twiddle the
firewall to get this to work.

  OWA SSL problem
From John: (By the way thanks in
advance) Is the OWA the only thing running
on the IIS? Usually, default IIS install will have a "default
website" with Exchange being a virtual under that. You can have the
virtual on ssl OR/AND http, and the parent being one or both or either.
  They are not linked.
We have a web site running as the default web site.
It is set up using anonymous access and no encryption. Exchange is a
virtual folder under it, using Basic Authentication. I've been testing
some of the time with SSL required and sometimes not. It will be running
on SSL before I announce OWA to the world.
Server listening on 443 does not necessarily mean
that the IIS is doing it.
   OK
In the IIS on the OWA server, is the virtual for
exchange pointing into the proper exchsrvr dir on the 55sp4 box?
Does it have rights into that dir? The OWA webaccess dir is/should
be: c:\exchsrvr\webdata (ymmv). If local, then no share needed
on the Ex box. If using a separate IIS server, then you'll have to
  have the dir shared .
I'm pretty sure this is set up correct. The web
access directory is right and I am able to access my mailbox using http.
It seems everything from the OWA server to the Exchange server is
  OK.
If you want the ssl, then the owa server MUST be addresses
with https. If the "cannot find server" comes up on https but not
http, then I would start looking at whether or not the IIS is ssl enabled
for the Exchange virtual site .
I've checked "Require secure channel (SSL)" in the
Secure Communications dialog box of the Exchange virtual directory. Is
there anything else I'm missing to enable SSL?
http://10.x.x.x http://10.x.x.x gets you IIS default site or OWA?

Sorry, I was pretty unclear. http://10.x.x.x gets me
  to the default website. http://10.x.x.x/exchange
tells me I must use a secure connection. If I
uncheck the "Require secure channel" box, http://10.x.x.x/exchange
gets me OWA, and after logging in, I get to the Exchange
server.

Like everything else however, I prefer my own real life experiences and
wisdom/opinions of people I trust rather than relying on a passage in a
book (not necessarily disagreeing with the statement mind you) -
however, in very small environments, I could easily see an Exchange
Server running quite happily on a BDC. If I were to always rely on
Microsoft's opinion, I would have never installed Antigen 3 years ago.

If you look on page 107, Defining Your Servers role in Microsoft
Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator's Companion, Microsoft press, ISBN

MS Exchange 5.5 Disaster Recovery White Paper for one. You will cry if
the Exchange server goes down and it is your PDC and there are no BDC's.
Even if it is your BDC, it is still a bad choice.

It is written in several places that it is not recommended to put
Exchange on a DC. There are two primary reasons:
1) performance
2) disaster recovery.

While Exchange certainly can go on a DC, nowhere, NOWHERE does Microsoft
recommend this as the preferred deployment.

The documentation strongly recommends against installing it on a DC.

It will install. It will even work, sort of. But, from practical
experience, I can tell you that it does not work well. We did this with
one of our small customers in a single-server environment. We figured,
Hey, if Small Business Server does it, why can't we? Well, all sorts
of funky things happened. Confusing message dialogs, lots of errors in
the Event Log, etc. Spent a lot of time in the MS PSS Knowledge Base.
We even called PSS on a few issues. They all resolved to, You can
ignore that; Exchange will sometimes generate that error in a
single-server environment.

Basically, Microsoft told us Exchange is not designed to run on an
Domain Controller. Not in so many words, but that is what it amounted
to. I got the distinct impression that the only reason it is supported
at all is that otherwise, they would not be able to sell Small Business
Server, and Microsoft management will not allow that.

I hate it when companies pull crap like that.

My server is a front-end Exchange 2000 sp2 box that relays incoming/outgoing

The box is on the inside of a firewall only allowing port 25 and 443

There have been no recent changes to the server (this was working last

There's also the notion of remaining 'supported' however.

0-7356-0646-3, it clearly states that you should not run your Exchange
Server on a PDC or BDC.

Challenge your consultants. And NAMES! I want NAMES!

Per prior thread (see messages below) you all mentioned that there is MS
docs that recommend not running Exchange on the DC. Our consultants
recommended to us that we should use exchange on the DC because it was
recommended by MS. Can you point me in the direction of the Docs you
referenced?

Current setup:

total users 1800

site 1
NT 4 PDC
NT 4 BDC
NT 4 EXC 5.5 SP4

site 2
NT 4 BDC
NT 4 EXC 5.5 SP4

site 3
NT 4 BDC
NT 4 EXC 5.5 SP4

Current future plan

site 1
DC with global cat.
DC with EXC 2000

Site 2
DC with EXC 2000

site 3
DC with EXC 2000

Thanks for your directions. At least I now know that there could be some
issues (atleast more then normal upgrade issues)

I have an Exchange2000 server that's been running on a DC/GC through
beta3, RC1, RC2 and RTM. No problems. No unusual funkiness.

The documentation strongly recommends against installing it on a DC.
Though, I'm sure they hate it when customers pull crap like that.

It will install. It will even work, sort of. But, from practical
experience, I can tell you that it does not work well. We did this with
one of our small customers in a single-server environment. We figured,
Hey, if Small Business Server does it, why can't we? Well, all sorts
of funky things happened. Confusing message dialogs, lots of errors in
the Event Log, etc. Spent a lot of time in the MS PSS Knowledge Base.
We even called PSS on a few issues. They all resolved to, You can
ignore that; Exchange will sometimes generate that error in a
single-server environment.

Basically, Microsoft told us Exchange is not designed to run on an
Domain Controller. Not in so many words, but that is what it amounted
to. I got the distinct impression that

PSS? I have never had the issue you describe. The hardest
thing I've ever had to do to get OWA running was to make sure the everyone

The common name matches the OWA box. The OWA box is
inside the firewall.

After rerunning URLScan everything is working from
other subnets and from outside the firewall. It's still not working from
this subnet, however. I get the untrusted certificate box, then a "cannot
find server" error. Nothing shows up in the IIS logs at
all.

  Steve,
  dummy
  me may have missed something...

  Your
certserv is the OWA box? 2K?
  What
name did you give the cert for 'common name?'
  It
may be nothing, but it should match the OWA box not the Exch
  box.

  Also,
is the IIS box sitting in the DMZ? If so, you may need to twiddle
the firewall to get this to work.

OWA SSL problem
From John: (By the way thanks in
advance) Is the OWA the only thing running
on the IIS? Usually, default IIS install will have a "default
website" with Exchange being a virtual under that. You can have
the virtual on ssl OR/AND http, and the parent being one or both or
either.
If local, then no share
needed on the Ex box. If using a separate IIS server, then you'll
have to have the dir shared .
I'm pretty sure this is set up correct. The web
access directory is right and I am able to access my mailbox using http.
It seems everything from the OWA server to the Exchange server is
OK.
If you want the ssl, then the owa server MUST be
addresses with https. If the "cannot find server" comes up on
https but not http, then I would start looking at whether or not the IIS
is ssl enabled for the Exchange virtual site .
I've checked "Require secure channel (SSL)" in the
Secure Communications dialog box of the Exchange virtual directory. Is
there anything else I'm missing to enable SSL?
