Death to the evil PST
Based on numerous posts here, we have decided to eliminate the use of PST's (and light beer) in our company and go with info stores in the mailbox. We are running Exch 5.5 Standard SP 4 on NT4 SP6a. There are about 2,000 users in our site. I'm curious how large some of your databases are and any difficulties associated with handling large Exchange databases. I am trying to retrain our management here to think in terms of limiting mailbox sizes, establishing a retention policy, etc., etc. But, in case we don't get there, other than the 16 TB limit, are there any other gotchas out there waiting for me? mit freundlichen Grüßen,(Best Regards), Steve Ropiak ZF Group NAO CERT, Exchange Administrator (207) 989-9115 voice (207) 989-8722 fax (513) 314-0197 cell [EMAIL PROTECTED] List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm

I have a user( a real pain in the butt user) that is wanting to provide a schedule of when a conference room is planning to be used and when it is not. Below is what she sent me. What do you guys think. Is there any reason I should not do this or should not. Will it eat up a license in exchange? Is there another simpler way to do it? Thanks I have been asked by the Focus Group to setup a schedule for both the upstairs and downstairs conference rooms. I have read about resource scheduling in Outlook. This is what I have found. Outlook 2000 returns to the old Schedule+ way of directly book resources without the need for a script or delegate. Create a mailbox for the resource, then use Outlook 2000 (not an earlier version!) to log directly into the resource mailbox and set the Resource Scheduling options in Tools | Options | Calendar Options. Create a single item in the calendar to make sure that something shows up in its free/busy time for you to check. Also grant the Author role on the Calendar folder to everyone you want to be able to book the resource. The easiest way to do this is with a distribution list in the Global Address List. The clients must do all booking through Outlook 2000. On the Attendee Availability tab of a meeting request, click Invite Others to add one or more resources to the Resources box. Make sure you add them as resources. If you add them as required or optional attendees, the resources will not be automatically booked. TIP: Using your Exchange Server administration tool, set the mailbox to not accept messages from anyone. (A distribution list or group is good for this.) That way, if users forget and add the resource as a required or optional attendee, the request will bounce back to them from the resource mailbox. If you choose more than one resource -- such two comparable conference rooms -- you can click AutoPick and have it find the next available time for either resource. Could you please look into to this and let me know if this or any other way is possible? For all I know we already have something like this setup... I had OWA in the DMZ once. On the last upgrade (NT to win2K) it went back into the trusted. It only ever ran SSL. I heard more arguments for keeping it inside than for putting it in the DMZ. I think that punching all the requisite holes in the DMZ to accomodate OWA makes the entire DMZ pretty flaky. I'd like to put some kind of IDS on it (like secureIIS) but I've heard some bad things about the MS lockdown tool and URLscan. Let me throw in a twist - what if the DMZ can be dedicated solely to OWA? I ask because that's happening here now. We're contracting out whatever Intranet services we had in the DMZ and the wire may be empty. If this is the case, is in not maybe safer back out there? There are literally no other DMZ systems that can be hacked and used to take advantage of the open OWA ports. Of course OWA can be hacked itself, but that same probablility exists in the internal lan, where it can see everything full-bore. Is my logic twisted or does this (rare) circumstance of OWA-only make any difference in the approach? Or am I thinking too much about this again? -Original Message- From: Mark Kelsay [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, April 18, 2002 2:31 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: OWA Ports Move your OWA server to your protected net. Multiple IMS in Exchange 5.5
Exchange 5.5 SP3+ on NT4. Right now, Exchange points to a Linux box running sendmail as our method of sending / receiving Internet mail. The networking guys want to add a second Linux box (with it's own MX record) and a higher cost so that if the first box goes down mail would automatically flow to the second box. I'm not sure how to do this on the Exchange side. If I add a second IMS connector in Exchange how do I control which one is actively used? Licensee must acquire a separate CAL for MS Exch svr in order to use Microsoft Client Software to Access or otherwise utilize Microsoft Exchange Server and/or to access or otherwise utilize the services of any other electronic mail server software. {the following is the relevant part} Licensee may also use that same CAL for any other digital electronic device that Licensee uses less than 20% of Licensee's total connection time. It goes on to define total connection time but that isn't relevant. The important part here is that you only need CALs for the number of mailboxes that you have configured that are actually accessed by clients logging in and authenticating. If a user uses OWA to access their mailbox all the time, you would require a CAL for that user, but not necessarily a CAL for every computer that they login from. As I said "I am not a Lawyer", but I don't think Microsoft really intended that you should have to have a license for every possible workstation that your users could connect from, only for the number of mailboxes that you have configured on the server that are accessed by your users. Not all licenses are written the same. I know that some licenses require a CAL for each machine. Some probably require a CAL per user. I believe that the standard commercial license is per machine. AND don't forget that this is an authenticated user, so if you are running on a W2K AD, then you will probably also need a W2K CAL also. But most importantly, the answer is to read the license yourself and then consult your lawyer for any interpretations. -Original Message-From: Ropiak Steve - NAO Florence Office Exchange and Bar Code Admn. We had this discussion with Corpsoft shortly before a threatened audit by Microsoft and their position on Exchange licensing is that you don't need a CAL for every user, but every computer that accesses 5.5 Exchange. Hence, if 3 people share one computer, only 1 CAL required. That being the case, if this guy accesses Exchange from work, then goes home and does OWA at night he should need 2 CAL's as there are 2 computers accessing the system. It looks like they changed it to per user for Exchange 2000, but that may or may not apply to volume licensing. So - you need a Win2K/NT4.0 CAL per user or per workstation (per server or per seat mode), then you need an Exchange 5.5 CAL per workstation (including home machines if they use OWA to authenticate). There was some academicvolume licensing in 5.5 where they licensed Exchange per user instead of per workstation. Your best bet is to check out the license agreement your purchased under. Microsoft doesn't do a one size fits all for licensing. RE: Public free/busy time and admin rights
Was the old server the first server in the site? If so, the system folder housing free/busy info is gone. Check Q152960 about rebuilding the site folders. The issue is that if I allow relaying all remote users are able to send and receive email. However if I have it this way I am susceptible to spammers. (already happened once, never again) When I stop it from allowing relaying no remote users are able to send email. Instead they receive an NDR saying that relaying is not allowed. I am using exchange 2000 with the latest service pack and Outlook Express for the clients. I suspect that I need to alter the way I have it setup. Is there a step by step guide to seting up Exchange for pop3/smtp clients? Regards... Can happen if the external account gets full and starts sending nastygrams back to the Exchange account (We got AOL very mad at us for something similar) but it's up to the user to properly manage the other account. mit freundlichen Grüßen,(Best Regards), Steve Ropiak ZF Group NAO CERT, Exchange and Bar Code Administrator (207) 989-9115 voice (207) 989-8722 fax (513) 317-0197 cell [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: David N. What we want to do is share a calendar that will be used by the entire department for scheduling appointments in the Conference Room. This way, users can use the Calendar to see when the Conference Room is available. A mailbox has been created called Conference Room. Usually, when you schedule an appointment, the Calendar is not marked until that appointment is accepted. However, we don't want to have to have someone manually go in and accept every one of these messages in the Conference Room mailbox. Is this making any sense, and if so, is there anyway to setup an account to automatically accept a meeting when it is requested? Thanks.
