RE: ActiveSync

2008-05-01 Thread Eric Wittersheim
Look at his settings on his Treo under ActiveSync. You can set the
schedule there. BTW. I have not run into this same problem with our
Treos and Exchange 2K3.

Subject: ActiveSync

Hello all.

I have a user who uses a Treo to sync his contacts with Outlook 2003.
He is using Microsoft ActiveSync. Since he started doing this, he
repeatedly opens too many connections to the Exchange server, and then
calls to yell at me when he cannot connect to the Exchange server with
Outlook because he is over his connection limit. The only way to drop
the connections is to restart the System Attendand (which also restarts
the IS).

Is there a way I can set his client to only Sync on demand? Is there a
different fix for this issue?

Exchange 2003 SP2.

Thanks,
Brian R.

Hi all,

Is there a way to configure ActiveSync attachment blocking at the server level,
rather than depending on the client? I'd like to block all attachments to all
ActiveSync clients, regardless of the client hardware. One example are Apple
devices that do not obey that policy settting.

I found this for Exchange 2003.

However, we are on E2k7 on Server 2008.

Re: ActiveSync

2012-05-01 Thread Kevin Lundy
Resurecting an old thread.

We just got around to trying this in our lab environment. It did not
work. Even with PSS engineers (both IIS and Exchange). They are now
throwing up their hands and claim it works in E2k3 and E2k10, but not
E2k7. (not sure I believe that, but ...). That was after our TAM queried
another Exchange resource that agreed with MBS that it "should work"

They couldn't even find references to the verb in the logs.

So back to the drawing board. Any ideas to block any/all attachment
downloads via EAS regardless of endpoint policy enforcement?

RE: Activesync issue

Where did you get the cert?

I just renewed my SSL cert today for my Exchange box. OWA is working fine, but
Activesync on my WM device is erroring out, saying the cert is not valid. I
double checked the config in the phone, and I've looked in IIS at the
Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync settings, and the cert there shows the correct
dates. I've restarted all IIS and SMTP services, and I've rebooted the server.

Any other ideas?

Just a guess, has the root cert expired on the device so it no longer

So, after enjoying my weekend, I came into work this morning and
contacted Verisign support. Apparently, Microsoft has confirmed that
they forgot to include a Trusted Root cert with their Windows Mobile 5
and Windows Mobile 6 OSes. Due to this, Verisign is giving me a free
upgrade to their SSL Pro cert, which still uses the old root cert. They
also sent me the missing root cert, so over the next 12 months, I can
install this root cert to all my WM devices.

Oh Yay!

The upgraded cert shouldn't be a problem if the root cert is already on the

Ahh, I got ya. So the cert won't stay on the mobile device after a

RE: Activesync issue

2009-07-27 Thread Tim Evans
Until recently, we used an internally generated cert for all of our devices
WM5/6 devices. Part of the deployment process was to install the certs on the
device, and it had to be repeated every time the device was deployed. When we
first started using these (back when Exchange 2003 SP2 first came out with WM5
devices) many devices were locked down so much that there wasn't a way to even
install our own certs. I've never found a way to install them so that they will
survive a device wipe.

Does ActiveSync do bi-directional synchronization wirelessly?

I'm looking on MS web-site and can't find anything about it states it
does or doesn't (yet, still looking).

Situation, have a user that went from a personal activesync device
(blackjack) to a corporately owned blackberry. He wiped his personal
device and gave it to his daughter, now he's stating that he has
contacts that are missing. These contacts would have been saved to the
blackjack from incoming calls he received, but I don't know if they ever
got to the Exchange server..

Sounds as if he had some contacts on the SIM? Those contacts do not get
synched. I had a few like that on my old WinMo phone.

replaces ActiveSync, works with ActiveSync, etc.

RE: ActiveSync / SCMDM ?

2008-02-08 Thread Bingham, Kevin
Don't know of a single clear link yet... ActiveSync and MDM are
independent. You can run either without the other, or both.

ActiveSync allows mail synchronization and a few policies (more in E2K7
SP1 with Enterprise CALs...)

MDM allows a lot of polices, OTA software deployment, central console
for inventory and reporting (functionality that Good/Blackberry have,
but ActiveSync doesn't), and VPN access for the mobile device. And
probably some other stuff. Notably, not email synch.

Subject: ActiveSync Certificates?

Hey List,

We're new to ActiveSync in our company. We have a single exchange2k7
SP1 server running MB, HT & CAS (no edge server). I am trying to set up
certificate based authentication on a Windows Mobile 6.5 device (HTC Touch Pro
2). I am using the desktop ActiveSync software and according to this article
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc182295.aspx) I can browse
certificates issued under my domain and install this onto my device, except we
don't have any certificates deployed in the domain; how can I deploy a
certificate and what sort of certificate should it be?

(The Certification Authority MMC was not installed on our DC and so I had to
set that up, hence we have no certificates deployed and need some guidance).

Many thanks for reading.

Re: ActiveSync Certificates?

Hi,

Thanks for the prompt reply;

As it goes we have an SSL cert for use with OWA (installed in IIS).
Initially I would have thought that this would cover ActiveSync as it
runs over HTTPS but when I set ActiveSync to accept client
certificates the client fails to authenticate. I am assuming this is
because the client device doesn't have its half of the public/private
keys set up.

Based on what you have suggested, if I have a cert deployed in IIS for
HTTPS traffic (such as OWA) I must be able to use this existing cert
in conjunction with my mobile devices for ActiveSync, is this the
certificate I need to deploy in Active Directory perhaps?

Many thanks!

Hi there,

We have a 3rd party cert for IIS for use with OWA so that users
browsers verify our site externally (Its a GoDaddy cert).

Sorry but you have confused me slightly; authentication settings for
ActiveSync on the sever are currently password (clear text) over SSL
because I can't use the certification options which is where I want to
be. If I am to install a certificate on the device so that I can set
the Exchange server to accept client certificates my understanding is
that I first need to deploy a cert info Active Directory?

There is where I am stuck, on technet I can find no documentation as
to what kind of certificate and how to do this?

RE: ActiveSync Certificates?

2010-06-28 Thread Peter Johnson
Ah ok so let me verify:

You want to require a certificate on the device, i.e. on the smartphone, before
allowing the device to connect?

If that's the case, I've never actually done this, but you would need to
install a certificate on every single device that the server recognises. At
least that's my understanding of what you would need. I suspect you don't have
your own PKI?

Do you have specific security requirements or legal requirements that are
pushing you this way? The most common method is simply a 3rd party cert on the
server and nothing on the devices.

Hi there,

We have a 3rd party cert for IIS for use with OWA so that users browsers verify
our site externally (Its a GoDaddy cert).

Sorry but you have confused me slightly; authentication settings for ActiveSync
on the sever are currently password (clear text) over SSL because I can't use
the certification options which is where I want to be. If I am to install a
certificate on the device so that I can set the Exchange server to accept
client certificates my understanding is that I first need to deploy a cert info
Active Directory?

There is where I am stuck, on technet I can find no documentation as to what
kind of certificate and how to do this?

I see,

When you say:

"The most common method is simply a 3rd party cert on the server and
nothing on the devices"

You mean for use with plan-text-passwords over SSL? (Just to clarify :D )

Yes that is obviously more leg work but we are a small company so I
don' think it would be too much hassle but thanks for the heads up on
that!

RE: ActiveSync Certificates?

2010-06-28 Thread Peter Johnson
Correct. Since using the certificate, assuming the SSL certificate works ok
then the password is protected because it's traveling over the encrypted SSL
tunnel. Assuming that owa over HTTPS works 100% then your phones should just
sync.

Simply turn off the requirement for certificates on the ActiveSync virtual
directory and you should be ok. That's the way I've always run mine with no
majopr issues.

No errors in the App/Sys logs.

The IIS logs showing anything coming in from 443 are serviced with an HTTP 200,

Any ideas what to do?

shell command that took forever to return anything.

PerfMon is showing me a high level of ActiveSync connections from Exchange

I don't have Exchange Administrator or the shell open. How can I tell where
these connections are coming from?

RE: ActiveSync connections

2010-10-20 Thread Steve Hart
Exchange 2007

The server has suffered from periodic dogginess and I had initially set the
counters up to watch ActiveSync latency wondering if there was an I-Phone
problem. The ActiveSync counter has stayed low, but I'm afraid I had ActiveSync
on the brain. The server didn't seem slow today on any front other than the
Shell which took about 5 minutes to return a Get-PublicFolderStatics command
for a single public folder.

I was measuring on the local server.

The Exchange Administrator latency got as high as 580, when I first checked it
this morning, about 8AM PT. It's been slowly coming down all morning. Right now
it's at 137.

RE: ActiveSync connections

2010-10-22 Thread Steve Hart
RPC Average Latency from MSExchangeIS client. Initailly, I was interested in
ActiveSync, but I'm monitoring all of the counters in this section. They've all
been normal all week except for the Exchange Administrator counter spike
mentioned in the previous post. It continued to drop all that day and had
stayed below 10 since.

It quite possibly has no relevance at all, but since we have the server has
slowed to generally offline status twice in the last month, I'm researching
anything that seems odd.

Seriously since you mentioned BES

Here in Central VA seeing message batching, problems activating users, - just
randomly comes and goes, we've checked and rechecked everything rebooted
servers, and no joy

MS say's we're good, probably going to open a BES call but really don't want to

Re: ActiveSync Question

2011-02-01 Thread Don Ely
MS and RIM both a multiple cases open with clients running BES and Exchange
2010. New MAPICDO files and RIM fixes alleviate some of the pain, but not
all. RIM thinks it is because of a memory leak in the RPC Client service on
CAS. MS doesn't think the memory leak has an impact. RIM thinks RPC Avg
Latency is too high, MS says its fine...

Our 50 EAS users laugh at our nearly 400 BES users...

Re: ActiveSync Question

2011-02-01 Thread Jonathan Link
I just ordered Good Messaging yesterday, we'd used the 30 day trial for two
users, one with a Droid on Verizon and one with an iPhone on AT&T, and both
were happy.
Very compatitively priced to BES. I also like the silo or firewall
approach, where all the company/enterprise information exists within the app
and doesn't integrate into the personal apps/info of the user.

You maybe got the same MS doode we did. The memory leak bit- we rebooted both

MS and RIM both a multiple cases open with clients running BES and Exchange
2010. New MAPICDO files and RIM fixes alleviate some of the pain, but not all.
RIM thinks it is because of a memory leak in the RPC Client service on CAS.
MS doesn't think the memory leak has an impact. RIM thinks RPC Avg Latency is
too high, MS says its fine...

How would I best also return that data?

Hey guys,

I am trying to export a list that would include the following ActiveSync Device
attributes.

DisplayName, Login, SMTP Address, Devicetype.

I found this script which has everything I need except for the userlogin.

Get-Mailbox | ForEach {Get-ActiveSyncDeviceStatistics -Mailbox:$_.Identity} |
fl DeviceFriendlyName, Devicetype, DeviceUserAgent, Identity

How would I best also return that data?

Thanks,

Daniel

Hey guys,

I am trying to export a list that would include the following ActiveSync Device
attributes.

DisplayName, Login, SMTP Address, Devicetype.

I found this script which has everything I need except for the userlogin.

Get-Mailbox | ForEach {Get-ActiveSyncDeviceStatistics -Mailbox:$_.Identity} |
fl DeviceFriendlyName, Devicetype, DeviceUserAgent, Identity

How would I best also return that data?

Thanks,

Daniel

Select
Identity,DeviceType,DeviceUserAgent,DeviceID,LastSyncAttemptTime,LastSuccessSync

RE: ActiveSync Inventory

2012-01-17 Thread Michael B. Smith
If by "good" you mean "easy" - unfortunately not.

The information is included in an FAI in the user's mailbox. You could write a
utility with Redemption or CDO to get at it, but I've never seen one. That
doesn't mean that one doesn't exist already, though...
