Strange

2002-01-08 Thread Cross, Tom

NT4 SP6a/5.5 SP4/Outlook (all flavors)

We recently exmerged some users from one site another and removed the old
server and site from our org. Everything worked great except all Outlook
clients attempt to connect to the old server at startup. If you cancel it,
Outlook resumes and everything works fine. Unfortunately it causes some
delay. They have created new profiles, reloaded Outlook, and no old
offline folders exist.

Any ideas on what Outlook is looking for?

Thanks in advance,

Tom Cross

The clients desktop is "brand new" freshly formatted with new OS and Outlook installed on the computer, yes?
Just trying to make sure I am not missing anything and understanding your nomenclature. If they just did a uninstall of outlook, that doesn't clean the PC from outlook files/settings believe me.

If they are running a new pristine desktop with new outlook then how does it point to the old server by default? That's not possible. The client decides where to go for it's exchange server. Something doesn't smell right..

Just going by what I've been told. I took a look at it remotely and I
recreated the profile and searched for .ost's and it still did it. The
profile is set to the new (correct) server. Once the user cancels the
prompt where it is trying to connect to the old server, they work fine from
that point on as long as they don't close/open Outlook again.

Any chance of an entry in a offline address book causing this?

Yeah, I followed the procedure on removing them in the right order. The old
server is out of the site and the site has been removed from our org. In
the meantime, I'll have them try your suggestion, they are across the pond,
so I'll get with them in the morning. I think this is an interesting
problem, something a little different than what we're used to seeing.

Thanks for the feedback,

2001-10-18 Thread Joseph Ambrose

Hello!

I was just informed that a email dated 6 March 2001 was delivered to a
small lists of recipients.

How could an email 6 months+ old be re-delivered.

I know the deferred mail option is one. but i don't think anyone
would push the delivery date that far into the future.

Let's play Stump the Exchange mavens.

Good luck!

try c:\>nslookup q=mx domain.com
this should give you their smtp relays then telnet into the
highest priority one (lowest un) on port 25 - if this all works then
turn logging on to full on the IMS and watch the logs when it tries

Strange IMS problem

2001-11-09 Thread Scott Burgin

I'm baffled!
All NT 4.0 network, Exchange 5.5 with sp4, server NT 4 with sp6.
Our email comes through our parent company so the email address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] We have a partial T1 connection our site with our
parent.
Here is what's happening. External Incoming SMTP comes in fine. External
Outgoing goes out, but extremely slow. Our IMS Queue has a lot of emails
in it. Yesterday, when I would click on details of a message in the
queue, it would say "host unreachable". It was weird because I could
email out to a colleges domain and a yahoo account, but not a hotmail or
aol account. This morning, I noticed the hotmail emails finally went out
after hours of sitting in the queue. Apparently, all the emails willgo
out, but it takes 1 - 3 hours. Looking in event viewer, the only error
that appears to be applicable is an IMC error under application. The
error message is event ID 4132, Technet shows that exact event and error
message and suggests incorrect information in the Routing Address tab of
the Connected Sites property page of the Interent Mail Connector. I
checked and all the information is correct. DNS is working properly. Any
suggestion of theories would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks,

Re: Strange problem

2001-12-19 Thread Bill Nosie

I may have come up with a solution to this. I have been experiencing the
same problem sending to other Exchange servers. Another problem I hav
seen is Protocol Error NDR's that contain an error similar to "Polite
people say HELO first."

These errors are usually when sending to non-Exchange servers. The errors
are because the default protocol Exchange uses is ESMTP, which tries to
initiate a session with the remote server with EHLO, not the SMTP standard
HELO. I disabled outbound ESMTP and both the Protocol Errors and the Host
Unreachable errors went away.

Details on disabling this can be found in TechNet article Q194132
"Disabling Outbound ESMTP."

ESMTP should be backward-compatable with SMTP, but this doesn't appear to
be the case in all instances. I believe this to be a bug.

Don't laugh, but has anybody come across an anomaly where part of the text of a message has changed colour by the time it reaches the recipient?  It has also reported that recipients have observed characters that move i.e. the first character of a word will be tagged on to the previous character. I'd be grateful for any pointers.

How could an email 6 months+ old be re-delivered.

I know the deferred mail option is one. but i don't think anyone would

RE: Strange occurrance

2001-10-25 Thread Briggs, Bruce

1) The e-mail client provides the date that the e-mail was generated.
Perhaps the client has a 6 month out of date Time/Date.

2) perhaps the e-mail was stuck in some SMTP servers pending or problem
queue and some server admin recently found it and moved it to an active
queue, which sent then it out.

try
c:\>nslookup q=mx domain.com
this
should give you their smtp relays then telnet into the highest priority one
(lowest un) on port 25 - if this all works then turn logging on to full on the
IMS and watch the logs when it tries to send - you should get something you can

this should give you their smtp relays then telnet into the highest

Exchange 5.5 SP4, NT 4 SP6a.  I know that the company that I am
trying to send message to has just recently put there server behind a
firewall.  Wait it gets even stranger, I can telnet to there server
and it does respond properly.  When I try and send them a message I
get Host Unreachable.  Do any of you have any ideas for
me?
Thanks, Blake Fowkes Waid and

strange calendar problem.

2002-04-02 Thread Stuart Pittwood

Hi everyone.

I have a users who claims that all of his appointments in the calendar have changed,
looking at his calendar all of his appointments are now scheduled for 23:00 hours on
the relevant day and some have gone completely.

I know there isn't a lot of info there but getting that small bit was like getting
blood from a stone. Has anyone seen anything similar? Has he stuffed up and just
doesn't want to admit it?

We are running Exchange 2000 SP2 and Outlook 2000 SP1

Any insights appreciated

Stuart Pittwood

Strange DC Reference

2009-04-14 Thread mqcarp
My Exchange server keeps recording event error 8026 stating that an
LDAP bind was unsuccessful on a DC that no longer exists. In fact this
DC has been gone for years. We checked AD and everything is clean for
our DC references. Is there a different area of Exchange that would
reference this? I have heard of metadata clean ups on Exchange but
have not done one before. Is there a reference for this type of issue?

Thank you

Strange Exchange Freeze

2009-08-12 Thread Harry Singh
All -

Exchange 2003 SP1 sitting on Windows 2000 SP4
AD 2003 R2

I noticed that my mail server froze completely, i couldn't RDP get into task
manager, nothing. I had to physically shut it down and bring it back up.
Prior to the freeze i noticed some users were getting the Outlook prompt in
their sys trays "Outlook is retrieving information from your server", I
KVM'd into the box and everything froze, hence the reboot.

Now rebooted, everything is up but i notice an that at times a few users are
getting the same prompt -- I've never received or experienced this on the
mail server, and it's been up and running for over 3 years without this kind
of issue.

What can i do to start the troubleshooting process ?

I checked my physical disks and they are all okay. Memory utilization is
abnormal either. Is there a specific counter inside Perfmon i can monitor ?

Looking forward to your help and suggestions,

Thanks,

Strange attachment problem

2008-05-29 Thread Silvio L. Nisgoski
Hello,

When receiving emails from one particular source, the attachments ( pdf
files ) are not shown. When viewing the email through OWA, the little clip
is shown, indicating the message has an attachment, but when opening the
message, there is no attachment shown.

If I access the server through Outlook Express, the attachment is correctly
shown and accessible.

If I forward the message, inside OWA, the attachment is accessible.

Viewing the message source in OE, it seems that there is not a MIME header
before the attachment, and neither a blank line. After forwarding the
message, the MIME headers appear.

I tried to forward myself a copy of the message, to post the mail headers in
the list, but outlook mangled the contents, and didn´t send them. Silly me,
should have saved the message and attached it to another message, not
forward it.

Only special thing I can remember of the headers, now, is that they show to
having been sent from some SAP Web processing app. Customer tells me that
these emails are generated inside their client´s system.

I´ve given up in trying to convince them that the problem is at their
client´s side, because said client will just say that this place is the only
complaining...

Is there a way that in our side I can mangle/dismangle or script something
to make Exchange accept the ill-formatted attachment ?

Thanks.

Strange OWA redirection

2008-08-04 Thread E. Peeters
Hello people,

My problem is with Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003.

Whenever someone attempts to access my OWA for the first time (per
session), the connection is being redirected to an internal
(non-routable) IP. Hitting Refresh on the browser opens OWA correctly,
and the problem does not occur again until the user begins a new session
(logs off or reboots their PC).

The IP is the internal IP that the Exchange box was assigned in an
earlier deployment, prior to OWA being made available. The Exchange box
has a new IP and everything seems to be functioning normally, except for
this OWA issue.

On the first attempt to connect to OWA, the user is prompted to
authenticate and after succesfully doing so, both OWA frames are loaded
but their respective content isn't displayed. Rather, the generic "web
page could not be found" is shown. Looking at what each frame does, they
are both attempting to load their respective page, but they use the old
internal IP for Exchange rather than the FQDN.

If the user hits Refresh, the content of each frame is loaded using the
FQDN and OWA will function as expected right up until the user logs off
or reboots their PC. Afterwards, the first attempt to use OWA will again
fail, etc...

I have combed the registry to see if I could find any entry that would
somehow point to the old Exchange's internal IP, to no avail.

This issue started when one box was performing all Exchange functions. I
now have front-end and back-end boxes, but the problem hasn't changed.

Any suggestion ?

Eric

You also want to make sure that the

So in your case it would be….

then the logon would come up.

the

Authentication
A number of options are available for Outlook Web Access authentication.
Choosing the appropriate mechanism is usually a matter of the capabilities of
the client operating system and specific security policies.
The default authentication methods for Outlook Web Access in a single-server
environment are Basic and Integrated Windows authentication. You set
authentication on the HTTP virtual servers configured for Outlook Web Access.
Note Outlook Web Access does not have a button for logging off. To log
off the session, the user must close the browser.
The following are the available options for authentication:
Method 1–Basic: Uses clear text to perform a simple challenge and
response.
Method 2–Integrated Windows: Leverages the native security
attributes of the client.
Method 3–Anonymous: Provides access to public folders that are
intended for general access.
Method 4–Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Although not an authentication
method, SSL provides a secure communications channel that can be used in
combination with any of the above methods.

Absolutely nothing on any logs.

I am thinking of removing (as this is not a

and domainprep once again just to make sure I have not screwed up anything.

However having gone thru Q252486 and done all of what it says. I still see the Server-SA
mailbox in the M drive. Thus when I try to remove the E2K using the E2K setup on
the CD, I get an error that there still exists a mailbox (which I suppose it is
the one mentioned above). Is there something that I have not done? What else do
I need to do. I really do not want to go thru the manual

Strange Attachment Issue

2002-07-29 Thread Stuart Pittwood

Hi all,

I have a strange problem with one particular e-mail.  This is an email that was sent to about
60 users and has been opened and the attachments have been read before.

All of a sudden when someone tries to open 3 of the 4
attachments the user gets “Operation Failed”.  Any other mail with attachments is ok.

Am I correct in saying that because of the way exchange 2000
works there is only 1 copy of this particular email in the storage group?

Any Ideas?

Strange Attachment Names

2002-07-30 Thread Patrick King'ori Kariuki
Title: NDR problem

From last week, I have been receiving
MsOffice attachments with strange names. For instance: a mail had an attached
word 97 document Graduation letter.doc. When I
double-click on it, I get the confirmation to open the
docment Graduation letter.26494DEFANGED-doc which
of course is not associated to any application - it seems to have no
extension.

Can someone tell me what's
happening?

Strange OWA problem

2002-05-20 Thread Eldridge, Dave

I am using Direcway satellite to access the Internet and also use ICS to
share a couple of pc's. Direcway suggests using a proxy statement to speed
up web access. In tools, options, connections, lansettings. I check use proxy
server and go into advanced and enter the gateway pc(192.168.0.1) and port
85 for http only. When i do this it does dramatically speed up inet access
but when i sign into owa after entering my alias i get a white screen. If i
disable this proxy setup it works.
anyone seen this. why would changing my local proxy have any effect on my
owa server at the office.

anyone.

Subject: Strange question

As most know, my organization is in the midst of migrating from Groupwise to
Exchange. For some reason, this question hasn't come up until now, when we're
working on the Proof of Concept.

We have "resources" in Groupwise. In this particular instance, the resource is
a Room. I have a very simple tool to do this migration, which works fine when
I'm looking at user mailboxes, because I can login to both sides and copy stuff
over. With the resource, in Groupwise, there's no credentials. And on the
Exchange side, the user account tied to the room mailbox is disabled. Here's
my questions:

1) Can I change a User mailbox to a Room mailbox? My thought is no,
since they really are two different animals.

2) Can I enable the user account for the Room mailbox long enough to do
the migration, then disable it after? - After typing this, I realize that you
guys most likely won't have an answer to that one.

3) Does anyone else have any experience with this that may have other
ideas?

Thanks,

Joe Heaton

RE: Strange question

2012-10-01 Thread Heaton, Joseph@DFG
1) Awesome, thank you. I'll look into it.

2) This question was in case the answer to #1 was no.

3) The resources in question in Groupwise are what we would call Room
Mailboxes in Exchange. I have to find a way to migrate the data in these
calendars over to the Exchange side. We have some Groupwise calendars that are
filled out a year plus in advance. I'd rather not give them a blank calendar
and ask them to manually input all the classes/meetings, etc.

I apologize for not doing the research footwork before posting, I had/have the
intention of doing so, but it's getting a bit hectic around here. Thank you
for your help, as always, you are greatly appreciated.

Re: Strange Autodiscover

2012-11-16 Thread Al Rose
I too have the same error running the test but my autodiscover works fine,
so far all i could gather on Google is that test is doing a NLB check, test
that communicates with an NLB *node* in Test-OutlookWebServices.

In my prod. env this is what i have for my 2 servers (cas array members):
[PS] C:\windows\system32>Get-WebServicesVirtualDirectory | fl *URL*

InternalNLBBypassUrl :
https://remcorpexch10.corp.remgroup.local/ews/exchange.asmx
InternalUrl : https://webmail.remgroup.com/ews/exchange.asmx
ExternalUrl : https://webmail.remgroup.com/ews/exchange.asmx

InternalUrl : https://webmail.remgroup.com/ews/exchange.asmx
ExternalUrl : https://webmail.remgroup.com/ews/exchange.asmx

InternalNLBBypassUrl is the only URL that refers to a single node rather
than my webmail DNS record

Not sure what to do with it, i don't use a NLB for now (just DNS round
robin)

Thanks Al,

We are on a single server, no NLB services even installed.
I don’t think there is anything wrong, but because there is one auto discover

Thanks,

Hi Stuart,

I had an "almost" exact same problem as you are experiencing. After much guessing by myself,  Microsoft came up with the solution:-

The first suggestion was to try :-

"I have a couple of suggestions that may help

address this issue. The first thing that I recommend is starting Outlook

with the /cleanprofile switch. If that does not have and effect on the

situation, try starting Outlook with the /cleanreminders, /cleanviews, and

  /CleanFreeBusy

For more information on these and other startup switches available in

Outlook, please see the following knowledge base article.

OL2000: Additional Command-Line Switches (Q197180) http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q197/1/80.asp "

This for me cleared up the problem TEMPORARILY and it reared its ugly head about a week later

Then they came up with this one which has worked for me now for over 2 weeks and not had a hint of the problem recurring…..

For me this solved the problem we use Norton Anti Virus Corporate Editon and sure enough it was scanning the M Drive…

Hopefully this helps you out.

Hi everyone.

I have a users who claims that all of his appointments in the calendar have changed, looking at his calendar all of his appointments are now scheduled for 23:00 hours on the relevant day and some have gone completely.

I know there isn't a lot of info there but getting that small bit was like getting blood from a stone.  Has anyone seen anything similar? Has he stuffed up and just doesn't want to admit it?

We are running Exchange 2000 SP2 and Outlook 2000 SP1

Any insights appreciated

My Exchange server keeps recording event error 8026 stating that an

DC has been gone for years. We checked AD and everything is clean for
our DC references. Is there a different area of Exchange that would
reference this? I have heard of metadata clean ups on Exchange but
have not done one before. Is there a reference for this type of issue?

strange behavioral on OWA

2009-06-25 Thread Thomas Gonzalez
Since I restructured or should I say introduced a BE in our Exchange 2k3
environment. My end users, when accessing OWA, are unable to login. They
are presented the login screen but when they enter their username /
psswd it fails and denies access even though it is correct. In the
security logs of the FE and BE there is no recording of failures for
those end users.

I have tested the access internally and it works, but strangely enough,
access from the outside perimeter I receive the same result.

Puzzled and confused...any ideas...Bueller?

TIA,

Thomas

I noticed that my mail server froze completely, i couldn't RDP get into
task manager, nothing. I had to physically shut it down and bring it
back up. Prior to the freeze i noticed some users were getting the
Outlook prompt in their sys trays "Outlook is retrieving information
from your server", I KVM'd into the box and everything froze, hence the
reboot.

Now rebooted, everything is up but i notice an that at times a few users
are getting the same prompt -- I've never received or experienced this
on the mail server, and it's been up and running for over 3 years
without this kind of issue.

What can i do to start the troubleshooting process ?

I checked my physical disks and they are all okay. Memory utilization is
abnormal either. Is there a specific counter inside Perfmon i can
monitor ?

Looking forward to your help and suggestions,

Thanks,

Network issues? Exchange is probably the most sensitive application to
network throughput issues that I've seen. Or maybe it's just more
noticeable to users because of it's widespread use and that little pop-up
that the users see.

It seems to have something to do with the phase of the moon and the version of

3com 5500G-EI switches. I've defined LACP on the port level and yup,
everything has working as it should for weeks now.

My first supposition is the network, but it's just plain weird how the box
itself locked up and i had to physically shut it down. Nothing in the event
log, that i've seen, triggers much of anything else..

I checked my physical disks and they are all okay. Memory utilization is
abnormal either. Is there a specific counter inside Perfmon i can monitor ?

Looking forward to your help and suggestions,

Thanks,

What switch(es) is(are) this server connected to If yore doing LaCP on the
server via Broadcom control suite, you have to let the switches know at the
port level, did anything change on the switch after the driver upgrade, I
assume this was working as needed before the new Broadcom bits?

I have a broadcom team of 2 nics doing dynamic link addregation (LACP) I've
updated the drivers about 3 weeks ago, when the last maintenance window passed.

I didn't notice anything else on the network at that time, but i'm looking at
the cacti graphs of the switches right now..

I noticed that my mail server froze completely, i couldn't RDP get into task
manager, nothing. I had to physically shut it down and bring it back up. Prior
to the freeze i noticed some users were getting the Outlook prompt in their sys
trays "Outlook is retrieving information from your server", I KVM'd into the
box and everything froze, hence the reboot.

Now rebooted, everything is up but i notice an that at times a few users are
getting the same prompt -- I've never received or experienced this on the mail
server, and it's been up and running for over 3 years without this kind of
issue.
