It's not really rocket surgery, actually -- it looks like you already
understand that this is NOT like a BRI, so you're 90% of the way there.

Essentially it depends on the ISP. Is it dynamic IP or static? You can
essentially configure the machine as though it were on an Ethernet. It's
that simple.

If it's static IP, get the assigned IP -- if it's DHCP, set up pump. Voilà!

RE: [expert] mdk7.0 install failure

I'm sure that nobody addressed the failure to install 'cause nobody
knows what's going on . . .
If you bought a supported version (MandrakeSoft o Macmillan) it's the
sort of question you can get support for, FWIW.

I, personally, like FBSD, except that it's almost always behind my
hardware a bit, and now that I'm use more standard hardware (assuming
FBSD has ide-scsi support), I'm using vmware which runs only under
Linux (or NT), so I've pretty much given up on the idea of going back
"home" to BSD.

Well, for win95b, you definately need the encrypted passwords, and
once you have those you have to smbpasswd as root to set up valid
passwords for the users you want in.

I think that one easy way to use an IDE CD-RW is doing the scsi emulation. In the
sources of the x-cdroast (www.xcdroast.org) there's a file README.Atapi where
explain a way to configure it. I use it for my cdrom Atapi and for all the
programs, and if I make a "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" it shows as my cdrom was and
scsi.
I'm sure that the references that RRPotratz have wrotten are very useful. Not for
your problem explicity, but interesting in general about it, I would only add the
wonderful generic faq about CD-R/CD-RW
www.fadden.com/cdrfaq. There's a lot of information about cdr. It explain a lot
of things.

Treat DSL as any other ethernet IP connection.

Patch 1 NIC into the DSL "modem" and the other into the hub

The good news is I have it working quite nicely and can access it

I have not got much of a clue about DSL as it is not availible in

yes, I think that's the best way... here we have a

Well, you could go to the kde control center, look under the sound tab
and then the bell page and turn off the bell sounds. However, you would
not have a warning that lets you know when you do something wrong or at
least something the system does not understand. Better to get proficient
at using your fingers and paying attention to where the cursor is
located, than to turn off the bell. You could turn down the volume on
the bell page, which would decrease the irritation, but ultimately you
need to pay attention to what you're doing.

[expert] NIS problems

2000-03-30 Thread Antoniou, Stylianos

Hi there,
I am setting up a small subnet with Mandrake 7 (glibc-2.1.2, ypserv-Version:
1.3.9-2mdk and ypbind-Version: 3.3-23mdk ) and I am trying to configure
NIS.
I read the HOWTO and the part about NIS in the Network Administrator's Guide
of the Linux Documentation Project but still it doesn't work.
I set up the server,as described in the HOWTO. I do not change the
securenets
and the ypserv.conf files and in the Makefile I delete all the entries in
the
[all] section, apart from 'passwd group hosts'. Then, with make I get:

[root@esee3 yp]# make
gmake[1]: Entering directory `/var/yp/eseenis'
Updating passwd.byname...
Updating passwd.byuid...
Updating group.byname...
/bin/sh: @/usr/bin/gawk: No such file or directory
Updating group.bygid...
/bin/sh: @/usr/bin/gawk: No such file or directory
Updating hosts.byname...
Updating hosts.byaddr...
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/var/yp/eseenis'

First question: What is that @/usr/bin/gawk file?

I go to the eseenis directory (eseenis: the name of the NIS domain) and the
map files are there.

In yp.conf I have the entry:
domain eseenis server esee3.cv.ic.ac.uk

Now, I restart ypbind ( I have also used ypset to set the server but didn't
work) and I get:

[root@esee3 /root]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/ypbind restart
Shutting down NIS services:[ OK ]
Binding to the NIS domain... [ OK ]
Listening for an NIS domain server: ..can't yp_bind: Reason: Domain
not bound
[root@esee3 /root]#

Of course I get the same message with ypcat ypmatch or ypwhich.

Now rpcinfo gives me (from all the PCs around the subnet):
[root@esee3 /root]# rpcinfo -u esee3 ypserv
program 14 version 1 ready and waiting
program 14 version 2 ready and waiting
[root@esee3 /root]# rpcinfo -u esee3 ypbind
program 17 version 2 ready and waiting

What am I missing here? Please help, cause I am totally lost!

[expert] Once more a printer-question ...

2000-03-30 Thread vschlecht

First of all thanks to everyone who responded to my question for a printer
recommendation, yet here's another one :

After looking around in a few shops I decided definitely against a HP 610C
(I want seperate colour/black ink cartridges), but took the BJC 2000 and
HP DJ 815C into consideration - yet, upon checking the available filters
in ghostscript and the SuSE-hardware database I found that the latter
requires a filter (or .upp ? I reckon that may not be quite the same...)called
"cdj670" which is supposed to be found in the ghostscript 5.10 package.

To my surprise, there was not one such filter, and also none that mentioned
the BJC 2000.

Since some of you recommended these printers (although the HP was a DJ812
if I remember correctly), could you also tell me with which drivers (and version
of ghostscript) you have installed ?

Thanks so much !

Volker

[expert] Read-Write Access to OS/2 HPFS Partitions

2000-03-30 Thread George Czerw

Its been my understanding that the Red Hat 2.2.x kernel inherently
supports reading from and writing to OS/2 HPFS partitions. Can
anyone confirm or deny that Mandrake implemented this "feature"?

I'm using the LM 7.0-2 version (kernel 2.2.14-15mdk), and have no
trouble mounting and reading from the OS/2 HPFS partitions, but so
far have not been able to "write" to them, either as root or anyone
else! I keep getting an error message telling me that the file
system is a "read-only" file system.

Has anyone else had success in this area?

and b) have anybody succesfully setup a common kppp configuration
beetwen users? I mean, all the users share the same settings, including
conections.

I would be very surprised if it did. NTFS is a closed, proprietary file
system, and as such is not documented outside Microsoft. It comes in
several versions, which a resizer would have to detect and handle
correctly. The latest version, for W2K, is a major change in design.

As for an NTFS to VFAT converter, such a conversion would cause massive
loss of file metadata, so even if one could be written, I'd stay away from
it.

Have you checked the archives for info on how to mount your
ZIP the old-fashioned way? I think one thing you have to do
is install a module for the paralell port driver for the
Zip. Supermount would probably handle an internal zip, but
not a paralell port version.

Did you first run "modprobe ppa"?

You may want to put that into your /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

# Install the ZIP drive driver module. C^2 1999 12 16
modprobe ppa

so that it runs when you reboot.

Also, if you use jaZip, check the version on the CD-ROM. You may have to
get the latest version so that it works with your more modern libraries. I
know 22, which is what came with Mandrake 6.1, is obsolete. The latest is
32.

Re: [expert] L-M 7.0 and NT

2000-03-30 Thread Craig Woods

I am not sure about PM but Sys Com has problems repartitioning NTFS. Be
advised if you get LM 7.0 on a partition, along with NTFS on another
partition, you will need to re-complile the kernal in order to mount the
NTFS partition in Linux. The kernal installed by LM 7.0 does not support
mounting to NTFS without you adding the appropriate lines to kernal
code, and recompiling. Hope this adds to your understanding.

[expert] Parallel ZIP under Mandrake 7.02?

2000-03-30 Thread Andrew Vogel

Last night, I completely WIPED my hard drives and installed (not upgraded)
Linux-Mandrake 7.0. There are several benefits to doing a fresh install --
first, I was able to more intellegently partition the system, but most
importantly, things like DrakConf and DiskDrake now work (they didn't work
under the upgrade).

During the install, it asked if I wanted to install supermount, which is
supposed to handle ZIP drives (and others...). I've got a parallel ZIP
attached to the computer, so I installed supermount, but my ZIP is not
being recognized.

What to do?

[expert] Printing from DVI viewer

2000-03-30 Thread Jim Ockers

Is anyone experiencing problems printing from DVI viewer? I tried printing some
manuals/documents to an HP DeskJet 540 and DVI viewer did one of the two:

(1) did not print
(2) would only print if I specified a segment of pages, typically 6-7 pages max

I've had the same experience at work with an HP DeskJet 1120C and an HP
LaserJet 4V.

What's frustrating is working on a short document that I cannot segment. Using
dvips from the console appears to work, but I'm not certain how to select
which printer to pipe the output to.

Printing to a file (.ps) results in basically a blank page.

Mount your Mandrake cdrom, go to your mount point, SU to
root, type "rpm -ivh gcc*" and also see if you have glibc
stuff installed by doing an "rpm -qa | grep glibc." I would
want to see all of the following packages installed (from
Mandrake 7):
glib-1.2.6-1mdk.i586.rpm
glib-devel-1.2.6-1mdk.i586.rpm
glibc-2.1.2-9mdk.i586.rpm
glibc-devel-2.1.2-9mdk.i586.rpm
glibc-profile-2.1.2-9mdk.i586.rpm

IMHO, that and the "gcc" rpms should do the trick!

It seems to me there ought to be some sort of "flag" set
when you open and close the CD drawer, and Supermount could
check for that. I'm guessing Windows does something like
this because it doesn't try to read the cd unless / until
the cd drawer is opened and closed.

Yes! Sometimes I'll install a new program and not know where it ended up. I'll
go ahead and do an 'updatedb' so that I can use 'locate' on it. I have /mnt

I reckon you just tell your Linux box that the IP address of the
MAC is it's gateway.

Re: [expert] Best audio/video cards for Linux??

2000-03-30 Thread Rial Juan

Nope, at least not with SMP. You must be referring to the old and now obsolete
comment found on freshmeat, dating from the early days when the emu10k1 driver
still had no SMP support. I'm running a SB Live on a dual celeron board (Abit
BP6) in SMP mode and have no problems whatsoever.

I don't know anything about UT; since nVidia still refuses to write decent
openGL drivers for the TNT-2, I'm stuck with no openGL support whatsoever. About
a month ago they announced they would release decent drivers for XFree 4.0
"anytime soon now"; I can hardly see how one month defines as "soon". Especially
in computer terms... And we're still waiting :/

Hmm... Let me see if I'm guessing correct here...

You have no compiler, so you just went to the gcc homepage, and downloaded the
source. In the INSTALL file it says to run ./configure and make, so you did. But
it didn't work. Right?

Well, in order to compile _any_ sourcecode, you need a compiler. So in order to
compile a compiler you need... a compiler. Sort of chicken & egg problem. First
compilers were fairly basic and written in assembler (direct machine code).

Fortunately for you, however, the gcc package comes precompiled on your mandrake
CD. I don't know what it's called, but something in the order of "make" should
do, I believe.

Good luck installing.

Besides, if your box runs 24/24, updatedb gets executed every night at 04:02
am. Unless you were un-smart (gee, I'm turning euphemistic!) enough to disable
cron, that is.
