Did someone turn off the list? I haven't gotten anything for over 12 hours
now and I was wondering if it's still running. I haven't heard a peep from
the newbie list either. what's up?

Oh its not just me then. I'd had nothing all day until this arrived. The
SUSE list is still working fine though so I guess the problem must be at the
Mandrake list server. Or else everybodies run out of things to say about
Mandrake - doesn't seem very likely :-)

| Hello List,

which

| Problem is I can't startx from the console; I get: bash:

| If I reboot to runlevel 5 I get:

| INIT: cannot execute "/etc/X11/prefdm"

| I feel I am this close, having got the right screen with a mouse. How

The Athlon is a totally new arch. the K6-2 was related to PII
and I suspec the K6-3 is related to the PIII's although the K6's
still used socket-7's. The Athlon uses their own propritary Slot A
technology (bad AMD 8-)) I have several K6-2-300's around and they
run very well with 7.0 and 7.1 and my Athlon (K7) runs like a scaled
dog.

[expert] Installation problems on IBM DTLA-307045 Ultra DMA5 Harddrive

2000-08-23 Thread ottffss

I tried to install Linux MDK 7.1 on a Gateway 2000 with a 900 MHz
Athlon. The Bios version for the Gateway is 0AA SNP05. At boot up time
the message from the Hard Disk is:
IBM DTLA-307045 Ultra DMA5

BTW, this is a 45 GB drive. During the installation process everything
goes fine until its time to set up the partitions then I get a message
stating that there are no valid hard drives in my machine. I've
installed MDK 7.1 on computers having UDMA Harddrives and assus
motherboards having UDMA 66 hardware built in and everything works
fine. So I'm surprised things don't work on the Gatewaye 2000.

I've tried changing BIOS settings but nothing seemed to work. I'm also
unsure exactly what UDMA 5 is. Has anybody seen this before? Also we
tried installing windoze 2k and had basically the same problem.
However, windoze 98 installs and works fine. Since win 2k and linux are
BIOSless OS's and win 98 uses hardware BIOSes I'm guessing this is a
BIOS issue with the harddrive but I don't know what to do besides change
to a different harddrive.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

UDMA 5 is ATA/100. You need to reset the drive to UDMA 4 (ATA/66),
which usually is done through the drive manufacturer's proprietary
software. Or perhaps you have a setting in the bios to make UDMA 4 the
default.

Would that mean that UDMA 5 or ATA/100 is NOT supported in Mandrake 7.1?

I don't believe the propriertary ATA/100 controllers built into your
motherboard are yet supported by Linux - if your motherboard HAS
ATA/100 controllers at all. You can run a drive set at ATA/100 on an
ATA/66 (or ATA/33) controller; you just won't get the higher
throughput. The problem addressed here is that Mandrake wouldn't
complete installation because it doesn't recognize UDMA 5. For the
sake of the installation the drive should be set at UDMA 4 or less.

[expert] NIC driver compilation/gcc configuration

2000-08-23 Thread Ian Hogan

Hi all,

I'm trying to compile a network driver that I downloaded from www.scyld.com.
The driver is natsemi.c, and I'm having a terrible time trying to get it to
compile. I've downloaded all the other files it looks like I need
(pci-scan.c, pci-scan.h, kern_compat.h), and I'm compiling natsemi.c using
the instructions at the end of the source code (gcc -DMODULE -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 etc etc).

My problem is that when I attempt to compile, I get about 400 lines of
compiler error codes, which makes me think my gcc environment is not setup
properly. The first few errors deal with string.h, regarding undeclared
variables, variables being de-referenced, sizes not being set, and various
things not matching prototypes. It gives errors on several other included
files, such as coda.h. If it would be helpful, I can grab the errors next
time and send them.

Any help would be much appreciated. There is no makefile included in this
process, and I'm (clearly) not much of a C/C++ expert. Thanks for you help,

ian

Title: Rebooting

I am using LM 7.1 in a dual boot scenario with Win98 (for my wife) and she usually reboots into Windows and checks her email, then restarts the machine so Linux will boot back up. There are times that I need to get access from work, and I would like to know if there is a way to set it up so that the machine will email me when it boots back up to let me know it is online again. Any help would be appreciated.

See "man mail" for how to do automated mail in scripts. Write your
script. Then call it from /etc/rc.d/rc/local.

Alternatively, assign it one IP address as a W9x machine, and another as a
Linux box, and ping the Linux IP address as needed.

[expert] KDE2 Beta 4: Kooldown

2000-08-23 Thread Asheesh Laroia

I noticed there was a new version of KDE2 beta (version 1.93) available at
KDE.org. I guess it's kalled kooldown because it's the final beta before
the September 4 release.

Has anyone seen Mandrake RPMS for it? Amazingly enough, there are SUSE
6.4 RPMS available from ftp.kde.org, even though I couldn't find the
source code! I could only find the 1.92 source code in the 2.0Beta4
directory. Weird, isn't it?

What is a poor little Mandrake user to do? Should I just wait
() for Mandrake to get the source and compile it with 586
optimizations? Should I grab from CVS? Can anyone else (please..?) make
some packages for it?

Oh, bother. (As Winnie the Pooh would have said.)

Ideas, anyone? Packages? Source? CVS?

Sincerely,

Asheesh Laroia.

Mandrake builds what are widely considered to be the best KDE2 rpms around.

[expert] re-install, saving passwd/shadow files

2000-08-23 Thread Daniel Woods

I want to do a re-install, or upgrade to a newer version.
I know to save /home to keep the current user directories
and make sure that it is not re-formatted upon installation.

Re-installing will create new /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and
/etc/group files. Can I copy back the current files after
the install, and place them over the new files ?

It seems that this should be ok as long as the UID/GID values
are the same (or changed manually). However, are there other
files (PAM ?) that we need to backup or replace ?

How do others save their /home/users when doing a new install
on top of an existing one ?

Thanks... Dan.

If you are looking for the latest release I'm not sure if there have been
any significant changes *but* if you are just looking for both versions
there is a great site ..

http://www.kde.org/kde1-and-kde2.html ... which explains the process for
installing both. Also the page that this is a link from:
http://us.mandrakesoft.com/~molnarc/192-2810/index.html ... has ALL
the currently built RPMS as well as the qt stuff and src. If you are
looking for the latest
snapshot and they are not here your other option .. (although I get evil
looks when I say this) is use another machine to install the src as you see
 fit, and then make
you're own RPMS =o)j/k
Hope this helps

Actually, it's %configure these days. Or, if that is broken for the
particular RPM, ./configure --prefix=%{_prefix}. Standardization :p

> and that's bad ;-(.

They were compiled that way, because cooker no longer contains kde1 (and
neither will mdk 7.2). We do have kde1 compatibility packages for those
non-kde2 compliant apps.

I understand where you're coming from. KDE2 *is* beta, and lots of pieces
of it crash fairly regularly (kcontrol is segfaulting at startup right now).

You may be able to convince Chris to package some that way, but he's been
very busy lately just keeping on top of the CVS snapshots.

lol. He probably had problems building the latest kdetoys. It's better to
not release it than release it in an unusable state.

Can it be done? yes. Will they work there? Maybe, but probably not "out
of the box". Certain things may be out of whack, like menu entries that
point to /usr/bin instead of /opt/kde2/bin, so it would require some
tweaking and perseverance on your part.

Unless u are comparing Window managers, why would u *want*

The K6-3 is a kissing cousin of the K6-2. The only diff is that
on the K6-3, the L1 cache runs at processor speed, whereas on

[expert] cgi-bin problems / file not found running perl/cgi script (repost)

2000-08-23 Thread Heinz Wittenbecher

[Apologies in advance if this appears twice but since this post didn't
appear overnight I thought I'd try again]

I'm trying to execute a simple perl script. Have tried several.

Web Server complains about "Internal Server" error
and in the apache error_log it's an error 2: File or directory not found.
(but the script is in the cgi-bin directory)

httpd.conf has the /cgi-bin/ set to /home/httpd/cgi-bin/

directory is owned by root with permissions at 755, as it was left per
mandrate install process.
perl script owned by root with chmod at 755

I've tried it on several machines (all Mandrake or RedHat flavored) with
same results.
Have tried it with username other than root. have tried with perms at 777,
all to no avail.

A standard shell (bash) script works ok.

Location of perl is as per first line in perl script.
Have tried no extension, .pl and .cgi extensions.

What did I overlook?

Thanks in advance for any hints/suggestions.

Heinz

I would like to run two X-servers because KDE doesn't like multi-head very
well (always pops up new screens split between the monitors - yecch). And,
of course, VMware and Win4Lin don't like it either. It would be nice to have
KDE on one monitor and then run one of the other full screen in the other
monitor (XFree86-4.0, two video cards here).

Anyone have experience with this?

Check the first line of your perl script.

Make sure it's
#!/usr/bin/perl

Let me know if that was it.

Re: [expert] prob detecting ISA devices?

2000-08-23 Thread Sarang Lakare

for modem, just start "kppp" and try changing the device from /dev/modem to
any of the COM ports.. /dev/ttyS? where ? is from 0 to 3 indicating COM1 to
COM4.

for sound, check what sound card they have.. see if its in the h/w support
list of mandrake, and if not, then check if its listed at
alsa-project.org.. you can download and compile drivers from there and they
most certainly work.

Run sndconf to first try and configure u're sound card.. I think there is
somethign under DrakConf too... check it out first.

If none of the suggestions so far helps, it would probably be helpful to
include the contents of the httpd.conf file for people to inspect. (and
the access.conf file, if that is separate). My guess would be that you

Re: [expert] cgi-bin problems / file not found running perl/cgi script

No luck yet.

First line in script: and whereis perl confirms that's where it is.
#!/usr/bin/perl

apache conf sections:

ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/httpd/cgi-bin/
ScriptAlias /protected-cgi-bin/ /home/httpd/protected-cgi-bin/

-

AllowOverride None
Options None
Order allow,deny
Allow From all

Since I can run a standard shellscript, located in the cgi-bin directory, is
there a security situation I missed re perl scripts specifically?

[expert] cdrom boot

2000-08-23 Thread lorne schachter

I've got two copies of the Mandrake 7.1 CD, one from Maximum Linux mag
and one from Linux
Labs. In either case, when I try to boot from them, it gets past 2nd
stage ram disk and
config CDROM and then exits with signal 11. I had this with one of my
7.0 CDs but the other
was OK. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Thanks,

But what if .xinitrc reads "gnome",
then "echo kde >> .xinitrc" will put kde
at the bottom of the file so gnome starts, then
kde too?

It may read:
"

Re: [expert] cgi-bin problems / file not found running perl/cgi script

2000-08-23 Thread Dan Jones

I am curious about something. You earlier said:
> > >
> > > Since I can run a standard shellscript, located in the cgi-bin
> directory, is
> > > there a security situation I missed re perl scripts specifically?

does this mean that you can access the apache server via a browser and
cause a shell script located in the directory to be executed? Something
like http://myhost.com/cgi-bin/shellscript ? But that
http://myhost.com/cgi-bin/perlscript doesn't?

If your perl is using libraries that aren't in the standard places, you
might need to use the Apache SetEnv directive, something like SetEnv
PERL5LIB /home/myhome/myperlstuff. Or alternatively PassEnv PERL5LIB
to ensure that the existing PERL5LIB gets passed along.

Also, recommend that you add the "-w" option , e.g. #!/usr/bin/perl -w
This will cause perl warnings and errors to be printed to STDERR (which
will be the Apache error_log for cgi operations). It may give you some
more detail on problems specific to perl.

Hmm, wait, perhaps this is it... (although I would doubt it, since the
error message doesn't mention suexec...)

The Mandrake v6.1 Apache installation comes with suexec enabled.
Perhaps yours does too. If so, it places a number of restrictions on
CGI scripts that may be tripping you up. Among the possibilities:

if you are using Perl libraries that are found via the PERL5LIB
environmental variable, then they probably aren't found because a lot of
the environment doesn't get passed. Even the PATH variable gets set to
some minimalist value.

the directory cannot be writeable, etc.

It would be easy enough to see if this is related to the problem.
Temporarily rename /usr/sbin/suexec to something else, like
/usr/sbin/suexec.not

anyway, the suexec documentation is at
/home/httpd/html/manual/suexec.html

[expert] Adobe acrobat plugin for netscape on LM 7.1

2000-08-23 Thread Byron Poland

I was wondering if anyone successfully installed the acrobat plugin for
netscape on LM 7.1. I just downloaded the binarie tarball from Adobe,
and acrobat installs to /usr/local/Acrobat4, which is fine with me.
Next I try and run the netscape script in .../Acrobat4/Browsers/ which
is supposed to install the acrobat plugin. It first promts for the
acrobat directory and then asks for the netscape directory. I change
the default to /usr/lib/netscape since thats where the netscape files
reside, but the scrip just returns an error.

anyone have any pointers to get this to work?

thanks Byron

Upon install ( in proper order ) I get upon installing kde-base I

I get stuck here and cannot find this file..

I would maybe go to www.ask.com and do a search on encryption types.
Basically, different ones give you different levels of security. I played
with FreeBSD a little but have decided to wait until I've read a little more
before continuing with it. I do remember the screens that you're talking
about, asking about encryption, etc, and I think the different types are
included for backward compatibility? (Maybe joining an existing network?).

I bought it last year in March, and it was the previous years model.
So that makes it a 1998 years model. Actually manufactured in

Are there any known issues with these two programs and c-media chipsets? If I
attempt to play anything through them...XMMS just stops playing after
10-30secs. KSCD renders my CD drive useless until I reboot stating a
non-specified "I/O error" when I try to umount the cd in the Konsole. There is
NO, I mean NO detectable error output other than that. This has occurred across
several complete installations. My sound card is functioning and was
auto-detected on installation. Please if you know of any patches, fixes, or
just plain information on the CM8738am and LM 7.x, please share with me.

Hi Sarang!

Well, get qt-2.2...rpm and kde*-1.93...rpm

Then rpm -Uvh in this order:
qt-2.2...
kdesupport
kdelib
kdebase
kde*

This should work. I had some problems with dependencies, so you might
rpm -e --nodeps some of the old kde*-1.1...rpm's first.

I'm guessing you had a Perl syntax problem, which would have been
found by simply running the script at the command line.

Thanks...Dan.

[expert] g++ can't find !

2000-08-23 Thread Peter M Aarestad

Now, this is weird. I'm trying to compile a program (yudit, in
particular) that has

#include

in one of its header files. Pretty normal header file for C++, right?
Well, g++ chokes back that it can't find it! I tried a simple "hello
world" program using iostream.h in the same way, and it wouldn't compile
that, either. Now, mind you, it compiles other programs just fine, like
code using , but I think it's having problems finding the ANSI
C++ files. What gives? Is there an easier solution than making symlinks
to each and every header file in the /usr/include root directory?

You need to set the access control of the X server by running "xhost
+localhost" also. By default the line "/etc/X11R6/bin/xhost + localhost" is my
in /etc/X11/Xsession file that is run when X is started. I couldn't possibly
bring myself to run two X sessions, just the one uses up enough memory and cpu
time. :-)

I've seen this before, sometimes libstdc++-devel doesn't get installed even
though it should have. Ensure that /usr/include/g++-3/ actually exists and
has the headers. Assuming that they are there, adding -I/usr/include/g++-3
to the g++ command line should work.

Does the file actually exist in either /usr/include/g++-2 (for egcs c++) or
/usr/include/g++-3 (for gcc std c++ lib) ? If it doesn't you need to grab at a
minimum either one of these packages:
libstdc++-devel-2.95.2-7mdk
egcs-c++-1.1.2-28mdk

If it does exist then maybe you're include directories aren't setup right. Try
compiling with the switch -I/usr/include/g++-3 or whatever directory.

Yes, the answer is it's either built into the operating system or bundled with
your distribution. Go to http://www.linuxdocs.org/ and look at the IPMASQ,
IPCHAINS and DNS Howto's and also look at 'man dhcpd' and any one of a dozen
smtp/pop3 mailer daemons out there.

It's tools like Winroute that make me laugh when MS claims that the TCO of
NT compared to Linux is lower in a server environment.
