Well, if ya think the cpu is up to it, and if you've got a decent motherboard, crank the bus up about 33+%, increase the IO voltage to 3.5+ and boot memtest86 ;> http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86/ Ram is what it'll do. I've had a stick of pc100 (8ns) runnin at 135mhz cas2 on 3.55 volts for 2 1/2 years, -o- errors. It will do 155mhz at cas3, still -o- errors. I don't have a higher fsb to test it with. Seriously, there is no way to test ram with software other than to push it as far/fast as it'll go, and see how long it lasts. Even then you're testing it as part of the cpu/cache/ram system, altho memtest86 allows you to toggle on/off the L2 cache. The quality and stability of the motherboard is just as important as the ram itself. Excellent ram is no better than junk ram if the motherboard's not high quality (something you rarely find in anything but a quality home or shop built system, specially if it overclocked, and never in a ready made). The equipment necessary to test ram is 10's of thousands of $$'s, and not readily available to most folks ;) -- Tom Brinkman[EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

[expert] Arggggh...Packet Problems and Black Hoie Theory
Okay... I have @home service. My connection consists of a 50ft CAT5 straight cable connecting my LinkSys LNE100TX to a cable modem which I share with another member of the house. Reason it's 50 ft away is that the inline for @home was too difficult to move and the CAT5 is easier to work with inside the walls. The reason they aren't networked has nothing to do with my problem. My setup ran fine for a good while until the last two weeks I have been having trouble with http and pop3 addresses. I went through the re-config and re-install craze and still the same results. I understand Ethernet cable needs to be <300ft(100m) but I'm at 1/6th the limit here. The win machine that shares the modem with me has no problems with the pop mail nor the http addy's. It's as if the connection degrades. So I check ifconfig and see tx errors where I have seen few before. I use "dhcpcd -h cxxx-a" to config eth0(LS LNE100TX) by dhcpfine. But my mail has been timing out everytime, my http access is crippled to the point where sites load and then the speed diminishes as it loads...it's getting to look a lot like Black Hole Theory(don't ask for an explanation :)) and the page never finishes...I get "Document contains no data" errors when I try www.google.com and we all know the front page to google is about as bulky as one grain of sand to a beach. I have checked the netcable for continuity with my multitester and got true and equivalent readings for each set...is it possible that the length of this cable is the problem here? I did have the machines networked once and ran the cable to this machine via a hub... once again...cable-->cable modem-->50ft CAT5 cable-->LinkSys-->eth0/tulip If it works on the winmachine, it's not likely @home's prob...I just can't determine if it is the cable length or something is amiss in a config somewhere. I hate to have to move this machine around. -- _ Logos: The Word of the Aeon - "I shall endure for all time" -Frater Perdurabo- _ [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

You need to specify the DNS server you are using in /etc/resolv.conf. Try pinging a known IP address outside of your network from the Mandrake box (ie run nslookup on the Debian box for www.cnn.com). If that ping goes through, it is most certainly what it sounds like from the above, DNS resolution. The format for the /etc/resolv.conf (in case its different, I haven't gotten my hands on a box to put Debian on) is: nameserver 10.0.0.2 nameserver 10.0.0.3 and on and on until you run out of nameservers you want to check. [expert] Cannot login to OpenSSH in 7.2RC
After compiling OpenSSH myself versus both OpenSSL 0.9.5.a and 0.9.6, I cannot log in via sshd. I have tried compiling normally and using the included /etc/pam.d/sshd file and I have also tried compiling sshd without pam support at all, and I am still unable to login at all, though I do get a prompt and then rejected. What could possibly be preventing me from logging in at all with pam disabled in the compile? The compile went to completion fine and I can use the ssh client without a problem. This is a stock Mandrake 7.2RC install without the OpenSSH rpm installed, as I wished to compile it myself. Is there something in that RPM that I'm missing? Even if I had the included sshd pam file from the RPM, it should still work without pam support compiled in. I'm not on the list, so please reply to me as well. Thanks, this is growing increasingly frustrating. Brian J. Conway [EMAIL PROTECTED] Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

On Friday 27 October 2000 05:04, you wrote: > If there is anyone who installed KDE2 final on a MDK7.1 system without > any problems, please let me know how... Ok to weigh in on the side of KDE and Mandrake, I had only one problem with the installation of KDE, a bad kdebase rpm that didn't properly finish installing. Here's how I did it, went to the KDE mirror, grabbed the mandrake binaries into a directory and rpm -Uvvh'd the whole thing. then I watched what failed, figured out what needed to be updated, and updated those. Sound works, video, legacy apps, EXECEPT for Cervisia which wants libkfm.so.2. It looks to me like kfm no longer exists in KDE2 and there is something else to replace it (please correct me if I am wrong). In order to correct the bad kdebase rpm, I grabbed the kdebase tarball and installed that. I have also (for no real good reason other than something else to do :) have been slowly replacing the rpms with the tarballs from the KDE mirrors. So far I haven't broken anything :) But, aside from the broken kdebase rpm, my original install went just fine. As far as installing rpms to alternte locations, there are two ways I can think of: 1) read the man page about --relocate switches to an rpm install. A warning however, not all packages CAN be relocated. 2) install it where it wants to go, make a list of the file locations, move the install tree to /opt/kde2 and make a symlink to it from the original location. I can give some more specifics about what I had installed and the way I went about if someone is interested. RE: [expert] Is there ANYONE who installed KDE2 without any glitch on a MDK7.1?!
I upgraded a few packages, removed all kde1.x packages, and installed the tar files with no problems. KDE2 works fine --- all aspects of it. Mandrake RPM's were causing so many hassles. I don't know why they had to compile against 7.2 beta, and I still think they should have had a better README than what they put out stating upgrade these packages, and then probably others too. I upgraded a few packages too far (I know there was a reason at the time but cannot think of it now)...for instance, it appears that the version of libstdc++ you have is very important in regards to the menu rpm. Making menu and libstdc++ match by installing the rpms from 7.1 for each instead of 7.2 or Cooker corrected that problem. If you try to upgrade to menu and libstdc++ from Cooker or 7.2 you will have to upgrade a host of other rpms too - and it isn't worth it. After this, kde 2 and qt2 installed fine and run MOSTLY OK. There is something more fundamental here that people need to come to grips with. Just because Linux distributors put version numbers on their boxes doesn't mean that each shrinkwrap package that says 7.1 on it is going to be the same as any other any more than when you buy W'98. I've bought two versions of LM7.1 Complete and they were different. I knew they were different before I bought them as the second one makes a big deal about the fact that Star Office 5.2 is included. Star Office 5.2 wasn't even available when I bought the first one. I think a better "logical assumption" is that these packages vary. Certainly all evidence from watching people talking in [newbie] about this issue suggests that there is variation. I, and the other guy who opened this thread, aren't talking from "assumption" however. We've got the disks in our hot little mitts and there's no way these disks are the same as the isos as one of the iso disks isn't even in the package. Re: [expert] Moving partitions
You also need to edit the grub/lilo config files to pass the right root location, if you are moving your root, or be prepared to do it on the lilo commandline. Re: [expert] Mounting NTFS drive.
If you REALLY want to try writing (ie you are keen to destroy the data, and just want to see how mcuh linux can do with ntfs so far) you will need to download a recent kernel (2.4.0testx) and compile with experimental options, somewhere under file-systems is rw ntfs. Otherwise, if you want to transfer data between NT and linux, you need to a have a FAT16 partition (as you would with win98/nt anyway). For 98/linux you could use FAT32, but in my case I have win98/NT4/Mdk7.1 so use FAT16. Buchan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > I've got Mandrake 7.02 on my laptop and have NT4 on another partition. Re: [expert] Serial Port Woes... no where else to turn! :(
For starters, its ttySx NOT ttysx: bash-2.03$ setserial /dev/ttys0 /dev/ttys0: Input/output error bash-2.03$ setserial /dev/ttyS0 /dev/ttyS0: Permission denied bash-2.03$ sudo setserial /dev/ttyS0 Password: /dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4 For doing a straight echo like that, and expecting something at the other end, you need to setup baud rates etc. Generally you set something like this up in iniitab, to watch the serial port with a getty, then when the terminal program connects you get a login prompt: # Serial lines #s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty -L 9600 ttyR0 vt100 #s2:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 19200 ttyS1 vt100 Just uncomment (remove the #) and set the rates/terminal type appropriately. Now if you are trying to go the other way from the Linux box to the Windows box, I'm not sure what you hope to be able to do once you're connected. Not much, unless you're running some BBS software on the Windows box. In that case, use minicom on the Linux end. [expert] Linux Mandrake 7.2 starting to appear
Hi All, It looks like 7.2 is starting to appear on mirrors. The interesting bit is that the tutorials that are on linux-mandrake.com appear to be included in the distro. Good Idea !! For those interested, you can look at http://ftp.sun.ac.za/linux/distributions/linux-mandrake/mandrake/7.2/i586/tutorial/ (our local unofficial mirror) I wonder if they included the offline achive of muo ? That would also have been useful. Oh well, time to wait until the mirror is complete. Buchan P.S. For those of you who will be downloading via modem, it's too bad. Re: [expert] Memory Size
No, it is actually a BIOS issue, which is why you are told in many docs on this issue to upgrade your BIOS. LILO does not actually care about the memory at all, it just passes the commandline options to the kernel. Windows might have other methods (non-BIOS) of determining the amount of memory, because I have never seen it make a mistake. [expert] Is there ANYONE who installed KDE2 without any glitch on a MDK7.1?!
Hi All, >From the posts, it seems to be that *everybody* had and still having problems with KDE2 final on Mandrake. If there is anyone who installed KDE2 final on a MDK7.1 system without any problems, please let me know how... I know, that normally only the problems get posted, but I think this time we need someone who post a working solution... I cannot beleive that there is no way to install KDE2 without loosing sound, screwing up systems, and already working programs.. I have a wonderfully working Mandrake 7.1 distribution with a lot of hand-editing for config files, customizing things etc. I also have KDE 1.2 installed in a usual Mandrake/Redhat places. I would like to install KDE 2.0 final into /opt/kde2 to try it, and use konqueror, kmail etc. My questions are: How can I put KDE2 final onto /opt/kde2 ? Do I need to uninstall KDE1.2 (which is all over /usr/bin) first? I do not mind to compile qt and KDE, or make it using RPMs, but I want to be sure, that If something gets screwed up I do not have to reinstall my MDK7.1. (I suspect that if I compile the aborted compilation does not screw up KDE 1.2?! Anyone have a comment?) Mandrake rpms are available, I know, but i) they are for 7.2 - I do not want to upgrade my system. ii) they will go to /usr/bin and I want it to be /opt/KDE2... Can anyone give me and advice what would be the safest way to go?!
