[expert] Library + MySQL DB

2000-12-01 Thread Asheesh Laroia

I have a library project I need to set up.

It consists of about 500 materials, including some CDs, tapes, and
(mostly) books. There is no checkout system; all I need to do is create a
remotely-accessible list of its contents.

I could just put the content in an HTML page, but a Windows user needs to
be able to use some tool (preferably net-accessible as well) remotely when
more materials arrive to update it.

That would occur about 10 times a year, or less.

So, I was thinking of using a MySQL database. Looking around
freshmeat.net, I found a complete implementation of a library called Koha.
However, this quickly fell into the category of "Massive overkill".

Is there a simple way? I've heard that I can just put the data in a MySQL
table, and use phpSQLAdmin (or something similar) to remotely log into
MySQL, but I've never dealt with MySQL before.

(PS: The finished product will be at http://residents.wox.org/)

Thanks in advance.

-- Asheesh Laroia.

PS: I have a CueCat barcode scanner, in case that might be helpful in
inputting data.

RE: [expert] XFree86-4 questions

2000-12-01 Thread Sean, Sharon & Kyle Harbour

I'm using Mandrake 7.2 and a PCI Banshee.
I installed the latest version of UT last week. Works fine in software mode,
but a little slow.
Accelerated is another matter. Speed seems okay, but it looks terrible.
Really messed up transparencies and the like.
I had to comment out some the features in the ini file to get it to work at
all using LibGL. Also, it only works in the
demo it plays in the beginning, it won't actually start a game. All the
OpenGL games that come with Mandrake work
fine accelerated now. Not sure what I did that fixed it, but I run
1280x1024x16, and everything works accelerated,
windowed and full screen. Now that I think about it, I think I relinked
libgl and installed pmesa to try and speed
up mesa with my dual processors.
BTW, anybody looking for a cheap card that does a great job with 2D and high
res, the Banshee PCI cards are a good solution.
2D acceleration is very nice under Linux, no more stutters when I scroll in
a window.
Plus, they do decent 3D. I'll probably upgrade to a GForceMX when I get
tired of it, the price to performance ratio is
looking unbeatable right now.

For me:
#rpm -q postfix
postfix-19991231_p108-5mdk
and
#rpm -q sendmail
package sendmail is not installed

It may not have anything to do with it all
but maight as well get that part straightened out.

Sometimes stock installs seem to vary
according to which choices are made
on installation!?
Also is your security set to more
than the default?
Let us know if you truly have sendmail
or postfix installed. Then we can take another
try at tracking this down. Basically if its
sendmail then you may want to try and
include something like "sendmail pine prob" in your subject
so maybe one of the sendmail advocates could jump in !!!
Of course if someone has the magic answer
right now that would be nice too :)

winFtp simply uses ftp... so all u need to do is start ftp server on u're box.

If you are not paranoid about security, then simply start the inet service.
Use the command

service inet start to start it..

u can check /etc/inetd.conf for the services u have started when u started
inet..

Re: [expert] Finding files based on date

2000-12-01 Thread Bob [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks for the reply, but that doesn't work. At least in the form:

 find /etc/* -amin 8

Seems to return some files that have been created long ago. The actual files do
seem to change with time. Example:

[root@main postfix]# date
Fri Dec 1 22:55:43 EST 2000
[root@main postfix]# find /etc/* -amin 10
/etc/fstab
/etc/host.conf
/etc/hosts
/etc/postfix/virtual.db
/etc/postfix/sender_access.db
/etc/postfix/header_checks
[root@main postfix]# dir
total 230

-rw-r--r--1 root root 1147 Dec 1 22:43 header_checks
-rw-r--r--1 root root 4096 Nov 29 01:11 relocated.db
-rw-r--r--1 root root 1001 Nov 23 13:06 sender_access
-rw-r--r--1 root root20480 Nov 23 13:06 sender_access.db
-rw-r--r--1 root root14244 Dec 1 15:18 virtual
-rw-r--r--1 root root10132 Sep 8 16:34 virtual.backup
-rw-r--r--1 root root20480 Dec 1 15:18 virtual.db

As you can see, sender_access is dated in November, and has an identical time/date
stamp as sender_access.db, which wasn't picked up. Header_checks is the file I
expected it to return.

She no be workie!

Jarabe,

Others more knowledgeable than I may already have
answered this but for me :

!-I am using the stock install of the postfix mdk rpm.
It basically was "point and click"
It used to be harder to get things going but always has
been much easier than sendmail and quite secure as well.
2-I have a registered domain and at least one ( of what
I call subdomains). One of the legal domains Hosted
by an ISP is the name of the accessable machine.
I do have a static IP matching my assigned domain which makes
alot of configuration simpler and even if you are not on all
the time it is much easier for others to log into your machine
when you are.
Of course the normal security precautions are in order, and
regular checks of logs etc.

A static IP is usually only another 10$ US or so a month.

My two thoughts !

You don't need a domain name. you can get a free subdomain dns account from
justlinux.com, dhs.org which will point to your ip and use it for email.

Re: [expert] Postfix or Sendmail

2000-12-01 Thread Vic

Oh yes, if you wish to run an e mail, or web server
or both, you must register a domain name and
have a static ip address.

One must also be sure that the hostname
of your machine matches that of the domain name.

I have heard alot of boogering about on
postfix and sendmail, I personally prefer
sendmail because it puts the mails
where they belong in /var/spool/mail/username
instead of off in some stupid other file
where pine and other mailers can't find it.

I would try to make all speed to get your
domain name registered as quickly as you
can, before some boogerface bogarts it,
unless the domain name is so unusual that
no Bob Normal would ever think of it,
if this is the case you are safe.

I hope I have helped.

Can't help with with the resetting of the alsa settings...

You say your alsa config file(s) do not change/are not changed upon reboot?
If they are, you could try setting the config file attribute to immutable so
nothing will change it, period.

My more immediate interest is in your ac97. I have an Athlon 700 on an AK72

onboard sound to work, going instead with my AudioPCI. However, if the ac97
does a good job, there is an attractiveness to opening up a PCI slot and using
the onboard sound.

When the alsa settings are proper, does the ac97 do a good job? Nice sound?
Work with games? Does windoze handle it OK? I am wondering about the
quality of the onboard sound, overall.

Finally, where did the snd-card-via686a kernel module come from?

Thanks for any information,

I had the same problem version with an earlier version of mandrake - not sure
offhand which one it was though - maybe 6.1 or 7. It was posted as a bug on
the mandrake site and there was an upgrade for it. You will have to do a bit
of searching for it if that's your problem - I can't remember exactly where
it was posted.

Have you tried using kfind? It's a gui frontend for the find command (I
think) and it has the option of dates. It's part of the kde 1.1.2 and 2.0

[expert] Postfix or Sendmail

2000-12-01 Thread Jarabe de Palo

Ok, this is probably a dumb question for all you Experts, but I will ask
anyway. Ok I want to send and recieve mail diectly from my linux box. Do I
need a domain name registered? And which proggy is easier for the first time
user? I will need about 10 accounts. And another thing my computer is not
always connected to the net so I know that would effect something. The main
reason I need this is for a database i am creating. Its for my family to
enter in their genealogy information for me to edit and setup into a family
tree and the like. So my website would only need to be up for a little
while, would not have to be always on cause i could tell every one when they
need to enter in the info etc. Ok enough of that, my main question is
regarding email, do I need a domain name registered to send and receive
email directly from my linux box? The domain I want to use is not registered
as of yet.

thanx

[expert] Alsa

2000-12-01 Thread Bill Piety

Peculiar new problem's just come up. I'm running 7.1 w/helix-gnome &
alsa-0.5.7-4mdk and have had no problems to speak of. All of a sudden,
if I re-boot alsamixer goes back to the default (and a rather strange
default imo) muted state. Same with aumix, despite the perfectly valid
~.aumixrc file. I've rerun alsactl to generate the sound.conf file a
couple of times. Moreover, the sound is likely to just stop, causing me
to reopen aumix, load the rc file again. Or, reopen alsamixer & readjust
the levels.

My system's a 900mhz thunderbird with the via ac97 (snd-card-via686a
kernel module). Any clues on this would be appreciated. I've done a good
bit of google-ing & deja-ing, looked at the alsa archives, but haven't
run across a similar situation yet.

Re: [expert] Finding files based on date

2000-12-01 Thread Tom Berkley

rpm -qf `which ps`
rpm -V rpmfromabovecommand
rpm -qf `which ls`
rpm -V rpmfromabovecommand
if these are compromised from a root kit you should install the rpm's
using

rpm -ivh --replacefiles procps-2.0.6-12mdk.i386.rpm

this will clean out the root kit with new files.

if you suspect that rpm has been messed with, then boot with your boot
and rescue disks, mount the root partition on /mnt/tmp and use the
rescue disk to fix/replace the rpm command. Then fix everything else.

Also, until you fix your security, keep your system off the net except
to get any files you need.

Now you want to read the security howto, check into bastille-linux if
you want to do it in a hurry, and add portsentry (look it up on
http://freshmeat.net). You should also get nmap (also on freshmeat) and
use it on your system to see where you are vulnerable.

Thank you Lars for your help,

(I also appreciate help from EagleIce regarding boot levels)
Now the install is OK and the upgrades are made (including
kdebase). Networking is working too.
Next step:
1. No log files (like messages, kernel.log etc) are
created. Where to change that?
2. Where to disconnect/change user of autologin (except rpm -e)
3. XFree86 V4 & Banshee, separate posting.
4. grub: is it sufficient to edit /etc/lilo.conf? What about
/boot/grub/menu.?? lilo is non-functional? Why is it installed?

Thank you for your help, maybe I won't switch to another
distribution. I'm still not fluent enough in Mandrake;(

[expert] XFree86-4 questions

2000-12-01 Thread Svante Signell

Finally took the step to leave 3.3.x for 4.0.x. Some questions:

1. Got HW accelaration almost working (4.1.0, Banshee). Quake3 starts
accelerated, but exits due to errors with 4.0.1, i.e. with MDK 7.2 and
libgL. Should I go for Glide, or GL?
2. Another alternative is to upgrade to cooker X4 (4.0.1e??) and use
ligGL. Is this workable, or is Glide still the solution?
3. Does Quake need to be upgraded to 1.17?
4. Which version of UT works?
5. Anuthing else?

[expert] XFree 4.0.1 not cooperating

I would like to get my Viper 550 AGP working with Nvidia drivers, but I need
to update XFree86. So, I installed XFree86 4.0.1 with the RPM included with
the Mandrake disk (I used the "mandrake update" program or whatever it's
called. I think the file name was something like XFree-server-4.0.1.rpm.)
Then, I exit Xwindows and use "xf86config" to set up my stuff. I'm positive
that all the info is right, but when I then try "startx" it fails to init
because it had an "unknown error" with the dbe module (couldn't find it, I
think, but not sure). Is there anything special I need to do? insmod maybe?
Am I looking at the correct
configuration file ("XF86Config", right? or is it XF86Config-4?) Is there
more I need to install?

Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Hello,

In the close inspection I've been giving my machine since it was hacked,
I see that there was a 100kbit/sec upload averaged over 5 minutes.. that
is a lot of data. I don't see any new files to account for this, and
suspect the hacker might have uploaded something naughty.

Question: how do I do a locate (whereis), based on date? What I want to
do is display ALL files that have been created or modified SINCE a
certain date.. like 2 days ago.

It would be real nice if the resulting output could give the entire
pathname to each file.

I tried messing with some switches in the FIND command, but it didn't
work.

Thanks.

Hi all,
I have upgraded my Mandrake 7.1 to 7.2 today and have a few problems.
When booting from the cdrom to upgrade the system hung half way through the
boot sequence. So I rebooted into 7.1 and did the upgrade from there, all
seemed to go well but the system would not boot, so again I booted using my
old kernal and it worked. However, I am now in KDE2 and cannot even run the
file manager - I get the error - Konqueror - The Crash Handler saying:-
The application Konqueror crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

Can any body help me please

Because of changes in the file structure to bring it into compliance with

RE: [expert] Mandrake 7.2 upgrade problem

Did you buy the cd you were using? Or did you burn it yourself? If you
burned it, did you check your md5's before? Did they match? I had the
problem with cd's that won't boot, numerous times. Most times, its because
of a bad download.

Hi all,
I have upgraded my Mandrake 7.1 to 7.2 today and have a few problems.

Thanks Paul

I am getting a 85-95% cpu usage from kde on LM 7.2

Is this the ususal behavior?

For instance on one machine user 'X' uses XCFE usage barely registers
Then user 'Y' logs in with KDE and suddenly "TOP" shows 95% CPU usage.
user 'Y' logs out of KDE and logs in with XFCE or other WM even
Enlightenment and the CPU usage goes back to minimal.

Just curious if this was normal or something misconfigure on the
machine in question!?

how it is working fine, thank you for the hint!
printing is working fine, too.

look at the netatalk-mailing-archive! many good tips there!
http://www.umich.edu/~rsug/netatalk/archive/admins/2000/

here is my papd.conf, maybe that can help you:
hp:\ #has to start at 1st column!
:pr=|/usr/bin/lpr-cups -Plp:op=root:\ #must have 1 tab in front
:pd=/usr/share/cups/model/HP/LaserJet_6MP-Postscript.ppd: #also

as you see, i am printing over cups, works fine!
not it is a cool server-solution for windows(samba) and
macs(netatalk)!

if you want my complete configuration files, please "private mail".

Hey Viktor!

Running servers are a risk, if they aren't configured well. If you set
up a workstation, be sure to deactivate any servers you don't need. Actually
it's only a risk for your machine, but maybe an intruder gets through your
workstation to other (trusted) boxes.

1st : Don't run any Servers you don't need such as ftp, webmin, ldap,
linuxconf,
  xfs and so on.
2nd : Don't use insecure services like telnet. Use ssh instead
3rd : Make sure your box has valid paket filtering (firewall) rules set if
you use useful servers like webmin and linuxconf-web

But i think you will get more trouble getting the hole thing to work on
an high-end machine together w/ NT bootloader than making it secure.

Good Luck
  Sven

[expert] Konqueror -- Inexplicable, insoluble URL error?

2000-12-01 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I have been playing with and exploring Konqueror. Just came across a
very strange and apparently insoluble technical problem. Perhaps one of
you gurus has an answer.

Go first to the following URL about Mad Cow Disease in Europe using
Netscape 4.75:

As Mad Cow Disease Spread, Consumers Panic.

http://www.nytimes.com/2000/12/01/world/01COW.html

Please note the vertical box to the right of the article, an ad for
TechnoScout. So far so good.

Now go to the same URL using Konqueror and you'll see the TechnoScout ad
smack across the first two paragraphs of the Mad Cow story, that is,
blocking it completely. No way to get rid of it, not even by giving the
Devil his due and clicking to their site. It's glued to the newstory
beneath it.

Can anyone help explain this and is there a solution, please?

Benjamin

[expert] Linux on LAN

2000-12-01 Thread Viktor Lakics

Hi everybody,

I would like to put LM7.2 onto my computer in our company. This will be a
dual-boot system (NT 4.0 and Linux), and I also would like to use the local
network with Linux (No server stuff, just a networked workstation). (This is a
Windows NT 4.0 network, firewall, etc. This will be probably the first linux
box on this network anyway.I do not have experience with linux networking,
other then dial-up at home.

My problem is, that really do not want to be a "security risk " on this
network, but I would like to use the Internet, my network account, and the
networked printers. I will probably manage to set it all up, but I would like
to know how to configure my box further, to pose a minimal risk for the
security of this network.

Eg.: I know that FTP server and telnet is running by default on linux. Is this
a risk?

If anyone could help me with some advice or a pointer for further info on
this?

Thanks in advance: Viktor

[expert] sony vaio issues

2000-12-01 Thread Klar Brian D Contr MSG/SWS

I have just purchased a Sony Vaio F630 notebook. It has Me on it and I guess
it will have to stay as the modem seems to be a winmodem. My problems are
that I can not get the sound to work at all. Harddrake complains of device or
resource busy for anything I choose and I don't seem to have sndconfig
installed. Also I can not get the Video to work quite correctly.
The video is a Trident CyberBlade i7 3D Graphic accelerator w/shared mem.
the Sound is ESS (I forget the rest of it off-hand)

Can anyone help in getting video correct on here. Choosing CyberBlade will
not work. And when I set the monitor to lcd panel 1024, X complains of some-

I'm sorry too because I have to disagree with you Pj!

But first: thank's for the notes on hardware, it is very easy to forget that
there can in fact be some small details in the hardware that makes one

people from going mad and hit the box with a sledgehammer.

If you are stating that Linux will always 'automatically' find the correct
amount of RAM then you are wrong. My experience is that this is very
different between different Linux distributions when installed on the same
box, most of them seem to find only 64MB automatically and I have to help
them detecting the rest.

I like cow's, but I wouldn't try to make them go out sailing with me, they'd
probably panic and freeze.
