[expert] ram issue
Hi all, Have an issue with my ram and would like a solution to this issue. 2.3.2 Specifying Memory Size in GRUB Edit the file /boot/grub/menu.1st as root and find the line which specifies your kernel. It should look similar to: kernel (hd0,5)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 Append "mem=nnnM" to the end of this line (where nnn is the number of megabytes of RAM installed in your machine) and reboot. This is what I found on mandrakeuser.org. Question I have is how do I edit the file ? I understand that I open pico then what ? [expert] Konqueror & samba share
I tried to access my windows share on local network with Konqueror and I see some problem with Long File names and file names with mixed case names. For example, if I enter a URL smb:/win1/ in Konq. location bar, it asks me for user name and password. When I enter that it shows me the windows shares. I click on one of the shares and Konq shows the whole directory listing. I have long file names in this directory. One directory for example is "Internet Downloads". Konq. shows this as "INTERNE~". If I click on that name to see the directory contents, it complains that no such directory exists. But if I enter the complete URL with that directory name as 'smb:/win1/cdrive/Internet Downloads' it works properly. How do I tell konqueror to show the long file names properly, instead of DOS 8.3 format. Other observation is that if I mount that windows share with usual mount command and browse Konq shows everything properly with long file names. Can somebody help? [expert] Disk partitioning and Disk Drake
If you are installing linux on a clean hard drive, Disk Drake may be okay. If you are installing linux on a system with windows on it, like a lot of people will be, and are trying to create a linux partition out of unused space on the drive, sorry, Mandrake, but someone needs to work on this. I have found that various versions of Disk Drake will create partition errors, anything from minor errors that don't seem to affect the drive to real goofball errors on some cooker versions. Whatever you do, don't create a linux "primary" partition using Disk Drake. Disk Drake doesn't resize the extended Dos partition that the dos fdisk originally set up. Instead, it creates linux partitions in the extended Dos partition. This kind of bothers me. Shouldn't the linux partition be created as totally separate from the Dos partition? "Extended" seems to be the default choice in Disk Drake. If you try to create a "primary" linux partition in the extended Dos partition, you'll end up with a truly goofed-up partition table. I fixed this with a third party program called Partition Commander but was freaked for a short while, thinking I'd lost everything. It is safer to use something like Partition Commander to set up the linux partitions, and then install linux. You can change the default file system in the linux partition to reiserfs when you install linux. If you install linux as a secondary os on a laptop, careful, because you might not even be able to boot from a floppy if things go wrong. There is no bios setup in the Sony VAIO laptop I have, it seems to be a stupid windows program! Grub got stuck and wouldn't boot anything, just displayed a "grub" on the screen, even though I'd set the stupid windows Bios configuration to boot CD-floppy-hard disk in that order. The only way to fix this was to stick in the linux installation cd and reinstall or upgrade without selecting files so you can redo grub or whatever. I really think the Mandrake versions of linux are great -- the only ones that were ever easy to install and use -- and I hate to have to rely on third party software to fix things, but that's just the way it is. Partition Commander is pretty cheap (I picked one up for about $30).

It is complaining about the dependencies of the kdepackages that are *already* installed. By installing the *new* version of kdelibs (i.e. 2.0.1) you will break three packages that rely on the *old* version of kdelibs (i.e. 2.0). The work around is simple, since I am assuming you are also going to be upgrading the kdelibs-sound, -devel, and -sound-devel packages to 2.0.1 as well. Either rpm -e kdelibs-sound, -devel, and -sound-devel, or use the --nodeps option. ONLY use the last option if this is the only dependency failure, or if all of the dependency failures are non-failures. The RPM debate has flown all over this list as well as many others but this is a PRIME example of why the RPM system needs to be changed. It does NOT properly deal with dependencies. I realize that package management is complex and there are times when the admin needs to make a decision to override the standard install method and that RPM has the flexibility to do that. But the ease of installation of new software packages is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for people who would switch from MS to Linux in various situations. From what I gather, apt has a very good system for dependecy determination and satisfaction. And that part of the problem with RPM is poorly crafted rpms. And this is a necessary tool for administration purposes. [expert] IRQ steering?
No response so far, trying again. Anyone knows how IRQ 5 is chosen both for my eth0 (tulip, external card) driver and sound (maestro, on motherboard) on my Compaq Presario 5640/5670 when other interrupts are available: 4,6,7,9,10,11? Also the graphics card is allocated to IRQ5: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: 3Dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo Banshee (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) Subsystem: Guillemot Corporation Maxi Gamer Phoenix Flags: VGA palette snoop, 66Mhz, fast devsel, IRQ 5 How to steer away one of the units from IRQ 5 to avoid interrupt sharing/conflicts? In the documentation to both the tulip and maestro driver I have not found any option to control the IRQ. What unit takes care of allocating IRQ's if the card driver does not require one, the kernel or the BIOS? The BIOS for this computer has very limited number of options, and as mentioned above the sound hardware is on the motherboard. Also only two PCI slots are available (one with the ethernet card, the other with a PCTV card, IRQ 3), so shuffling cards is not much to try.

With Zope, you'll need to remove Zope-zserver or Zope-pcgi before doing this since you can only have one or the other installed. But that's what you would do for any package that you don't currently have installed and wanted to install. I don't know what's going on with the mirrors (although I've heard some people say it's fixed now?), as I don't have anything to do with the mirrors. I just deal with updates, so I keep an eye on that sort of thing. One thing you can do if you are concerned, is manually ftp (use ncftp or some other gui ftp client that resumes) the updates and then just point MU to the local directory where you downloaded them. That way if you do run into trouble, you can resume the download if you need to. FYI, I've rarely had problems with overseas sites, and sometimes they are faster than mirrors closer to home (I'm in Canada). Oh, well, here goes again) I finally got the time to try and see if the linux box was correctly routing, and it appears to be fine, as I can ping the linux router's ethernet card just fine from a dialin client (also linux ;-). Or, put another way, I have verified that packets from the linux RAS can travel from the RAS client to the (windows-only) network segment, but that no reply comes back. Add that to the fact that, when the windows machine I'm trying to reach (at, for example, 172.27.4.1) does the following: c:\windows> ping 172.27.5.1 Pinging 172.27.5.1 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 157.130.224.69: Destination host unreachable. The problem: xfmail archives mail making a folder for each category you want, and mail is stored with numbered files under each directory (e.g. /home/guido/mail/mandrake/1, /home/guido/mail/mandrake/2 and so on). Kmail does not use one file for each message, but archives mail using one "large" file for each category, so there will be only one directory with "large" files, e.g. /home/guido/Mail/mandrake. Question: is there a program to merge the old mail files (xfmail output) with the new ones (kmail output)? or should I write a little utility do perform this task? thanks! guido, italy -- E-Mail: Guido Milanese <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Vocal Ensemble Ars Antiqua, Genova, Italia Homepage: http://fly.to/arsantiqua + + + + + + NON NOBIS DOMINE + + + + + + + --

That will probably be necessary now that I have completely removed all the zope packages and it no longer shows up in update. Thanks for this trick. Someone else helped me find the problem package but I didn't know that maximize would do that. Getting to the top of the window was never a problem, just getting to the bottom. I could have maximized at any time. Traci -- Traci Collins, MA, CCAI, CCNA Professor of Computer Education Colorado Mountain College http://www.rof.net/wp/tcollins/traci.html

Since I had the problem on four different fresh installs (down to the point of deleting and recreating partitions), I was able to experiment. I did upgrade Mandrake gnome to Helix at least once but I also installed Mandrake without selecting the gnome package and did a clean install of helix at least once. Zope is now gone from the database and also from the update. Now, on the off chance that I would like to have the updated, secure, zope, how do you download and install updates (in this case a replacement) for packages you don't have installed? I could reinstall zope and get it back on the list but that obviously isn't going to get me what I would like since I would be back with a Mandrake Update program that wasn't working. Any suggestions? > Of course, the other problem might be that the mirror you're looking > at hasn't cleaned out the old Zope updated packages yet... are there > two different versions for each package? There was only one version of each package, they had a 7.2 subdirectory so I don't think that the 1.1mdk packages would have been in the particular place. Since you know about the mirrors, could you answer a question? What is happening to the update mirrors? I haven't been able to get a list of updates from any of the American mirrors, I am always a little nervous about transatlantic updates just because I find that ftp from those distances often fails at some point during the process. Have the hosts decided not to host Mandrake updates any longer? [expert] boot up problem
Hi, I asked this question before under a different subject, but I still haven't found a solution yet. My problem is that when I do a cold boot, the system slowly freezes after starting X. I see the splash screen slowly start to come up, and after a bit the desktop icons come up in the same spot(one on top of the other) at this point, you cannot get to a console as no keys work. If I do a reset, the system does a fsck and afterwards comes up like it's supposed to. This happens with KDE and Gnome. If I don't use the autologin but use kdm or gdm, the same thing happens. If I start the system in run level 3 instead of 5, I get the same thing. Any idea what the problem could be, or where I should look? Hopefully, Jerry -- Gerald Williams Words Matter! Do you know the name and location of the file which contains the list of installed wm? As a quick and dirty fix I could manually update this file to get gnome and sawfish back since they are both present and operational on my system. It may be the Helix install which isn't updating this file. They don't officially support 7.2 yet and if the file has changed since 7.1 their automagical program may have simply goofed. There are several 7.2 users who are also Helix users so I am surprized not to have heard about this 'feature' of the combination. I guess I must just whine faster . In any event, thanks for an education on how the process works. win98se or win2k using the ati drivers. tom berkley ps sorry, just couldn't resist. I use an ati pci tv card in my win2k box primarily because linux does not have any support for that card yet. Re: [expert] Laptop recommendations
Take a good look at the Dell Inspiron 7500 or whatever is equivalent today. I have a 7000 and it has run both redhat and mandrake very very well. Forget the internal modem for now although there have been some rumors that I have not followed up on regarding linux using the winmodem. There is a project somewhere on this. The 3Com 3CCM156 pcmcia modem works just fine but be careful if you look at the combo nic/modem pcmcia (actually cardbus) some have winmodems. I have not used my modem since last January when my dsl line was installed so I am not very current with the modem stuff. The 7500 has a megabay which will accept the cdrom/floppy drive or an additional 30gb hard drive or a battery and you have two megabays. With a 30gb internal drive you can have 90 gb total (possibly 96 by now!!). Dell has served me well with my 7000 and the 15 inch lcd has 1024x768 but the 7500 goes up to something like 1400x1050 or something close to those numbers. You will very much like the 15 inch lcd. Its BIG. You can also get an adaptec 1480 cardbus scsi adapter and connect up a cdburner and whatever else pleases you to the scsi bus. It requires nothing special. Linux pcmcia software will find all the stuff there and make accessing it transparent for you. Do not sweat the lack of Dell providing you linux. Its cheaper to get the box with windows and then install linux yourself in a dual boot mode. I have mandrake 7.1 on my 7000 currently but with the problems that I have had with 7.2 on my desktop box, I do not wholeheartedly recommend it yet. Either stick with the 7.1 mandrake or use redhat 7.0. The bugs are pretty much worked on rh7 and its rock stable on my desktop. They have even updated the glibc to 2.2 now and there are no problems bringing in the development software, if you're into the fun of new software.growl, nash, yeehah...8-) Have fun with it Tom Berkley Mark Belanger wrote: > Can anyone recommend a laptop that will > work well with Linux/Mandrake? > > I'd prefer a modem that works, a screen resolution > greater than 1024x768.
