It certainly does. In fact there was very little difference in my
settings and the ones you describe, so I'm confident now that they
were fine. I think you are right, however, about the cause of the
problem being new threads which are created as the local user
account. I'll keep an eye on it for a day or two to see if it's
sorted now.

I've taken your advice about marking the separate identities with
'special transport' to ensure the right ones are used. I know that,
having set certain folders to use certain identities I can force
that, so it seems to me that I should avoid starting a new mail when
in Inbox, ensuring that I am actually in a folder that uses the
default account if that's what I want. It shouldn't take too long to
get used to that

Thanks again for a very clear explanation.

Anne

[expert] ipsec.o and GCC versions ?

2003-07-19 Thread Joerg Mertin
Hi Folks,

just tried to use freeswan - to connect the 2 computers through the Wifi
Network I have over here. However - without forcing an Insmode - I can't get
the ipsec module to load. The funny thing though is that I did compile the
kernel myself - and it doesn't seem to be a 3rd party driver IMHO ... as I
didn't see any reference to an binary Object-file in the ipsec-part of the
kernel source-tree that comes with the kernel-source rpm...

Used the freeswan-1.99-3mdk RPM package - and a self-compiled kernel from the
kernel-source-2.4.21-0.18mdk source file.

Has this bug been Fixed in for the next kernel ?

Here - when I try to load the module - and I did just recompile it:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ipsec]# ls -l ipsec.o
-rw-r--r--1 root root 296811 Jul 19 01:05 ipsec.o

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# modprobe ipsec
/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.18c3/kernel/net/ipsec/ipsec.o: The module you are trying
to load (/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.18c3/kernel/net/ipsec/ipsec.o) is compiled
with a gcc
version 2 compiler, while the kernel you are running is compiled with
a gcc version 3 compiler. This is known to not work.
modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.18c3/kernel/net/ipsec/ipsec.o failed
modprobe: insmod ipsec failed

I did now edit the module - and worked it out as described in:
http://archives.mandrakelinux.com/cooker/2003-04/msg00334.php

Thx & Cheers

[expert] problem with filesystem check

2003-07-19 Thread R N dev
Hi, every 21 times the filesystem check starts on boot
and fails. This problem is present only with MSK91
(not
in 8.1 8.2 or 9.0).
I was not care about this till the repear phase hasn't
failed. Some important libraries (such as qt) were
corrupted and i'm not sure to have problem in
future using programms that i'm not usually use.
I decided to ask help because a friend of mine had
the same problem last week always with mandrake 9.1
but different HW.
We have similar HD partitions i.e.
/dev/hda5 on / type ext2
/dev/hda7 on /home type ext3

Can the problem be on ext2 partition and if, how
can i change to ext3 without loosing anything?

Thanks in advance
Angelo

Angelo:
Converting an existing ext2 filesystem to ext3 is pretty simple. Open up a
terminal as root and type:
tune2fs -j /dev/hda5
to set up the journalling. Now open up /etc/fstab in whatever editor, and edit
the appropriate device(s) to show ext3 in place of ext2:
dev/hdb1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
Exit and save. That's it.
This _should_ stop the mandatory file checks. If it doesn't, you may have a
problem.

I solved the problem by installing the tk/tcl rpm packages and xconfig
works. Maybe this should be a dependency for the kernel source?

This is for the standard kernel that comes with 9.1 (2.4.21-0.13mdk I
think...).

I've got the splash screen up and running (I left out initrd support)
but am pretty stumped by my power problem. Using the standard kernel,
on the command halt the computer shuts down and powers down. ACPI is
disabled in the bios and doesn't effect this behaviour (due to the
fact acpi doesn't work for my via chipset appollo 133 and 686a
southbridge) it still powers down. However in my beautfiul new
optimised slimmed down kernel (its been on the atkins diet) everything
works apart from the computer powering down. I even hear the HD spin
down, but no power off. It is obviously a missing module in the
kernel, but I haven't touched the standard advanced power management
options (turned off acpi support, also tried with it on, and still no
effect.).

Under one kernel it works,

under the other it doesn't.

Any clues you can give me for other modules required to allow apm to
turn off the computer? I can post the .config file as an email
attachment if you so wish.

Cheers

look in /var/log/cups for clues -- if there's nothing good, edit
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf and change the log level to debug, then do a

[expert] Connection sharing and 2 Nics ?

Hiya,

I have Internet connection sharing set up for my
windows PC's and have recently brought Xbox live, now if i use a dediacated cat5
lead to the mandrake box it works fine (after editing shorewall rules to allow
ports) however as I am cheap and have had the same network in place for years my
home PC network is coax and therefore I cant use this with my Xbox.

So i thought it would be easier and cheaper to just
add another nic to the linux server and use hat to server for Xbox
live.

now my question is, when i set up internet
connections sharing in mandrake it only allows me to select one nic for usevia
(i presume) the dhcp server, and I need both (or a workaround as i can manually
set ip's on the xbox) to get this to work,

Any help would be apreciated, i changed from a 2k
server to this a few months ago and have been happy so far, I would know how to
do this in 2k server, but in linux I am stuck, so if anyone can tell
me how to get the second nic to work with internet connection sharing (or even
better the dhcp server to work also with it) I would be in debt to
you.

I am unsure if it went the first time.

TTBOMK, you need for the partition to be unmounted when you do this.

Since it's your root filesystem, perhaps the best way to accomplish this
is to boot to the rescue system on MDK CD #1 (by hitting F1 at the first
splash screen, then typing "rescue" at the prompt), then choosing "Go to
console" at the ensuing menu, and running this command from there.

Be aware that the true cause of the filesystem failing those periodic
checks has not yet been determined, and could well be due to one or more
of any number of factors, such as bad disks, bad or poorly connected
cabling, memory that is failing, or something else entirely. While this
may mask the symptoms of that problem, it doesn't really solve it.

Help me out here guys. It seems to me that f you are running multiple
cards from the dhcp server then the system will expect to treat each as

this is a situation that the GUI builders didn't have resources to
account for, so the GUI doesn't help you do it. However, it's perfectly
do-able from the command line.

It sounds like you've already got the card working, so I'll skip that
part.

Then go to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and setup scripts for eth2,
copying eth1's for guidance.

Then edit /etc/dhcpd.conf and add the interface and range.

Then edit the files in /etc/shorewall/ and make sure the new subnet can
route xbox's traffic out.

RE: [expert] Connection sharing and 2 Nics ?

2003-07-19 Thread Frankie
well there are two easy answers here..

One I think someone has already mentioned..

have a 10base2 (coax) card and a 10/100baseT (cat5) card
in the linux box and use /etc/sysconfig/static-routes to
route between them.. (or just set them to the same subnet.)

or go and backup an old 10baseT hub.. most of them had a
coax
connector on the back for just this purpose.. (ebay would be
a good
place to start and you should be able to pick one up for
only a
couple of dollars.)

a third answer is to just get a 10 dollar cat5 card and some
cable
and throw out the coax,, its slow, it was never friendly. (I
used
to spend alot of time looking for bad terminators and stuff
on peoples
networks).

Help me out here guys. It seems to me that f you are running
multiple
cards from the dhcp server then the system will expect to
treat each as
a different subnet without running them all through a
switch.

Hmmm... might it not also be possible that out there
somewhere is an
adapter that will plug ethernet into coax and/or vice versa?
Out here in the Spokane area we have a store called "Bundles
and More"
that does nothing but computer connectors and cables. If I
were looking
for such an animal that is where I would start the hunt.

Hi Jack

Solved that one, in the hylfax backend the pointer to the sendfax etc
was /usr/sbin not /usr/local/sbin

See other post about next problem with text files.

Re: [expert] Connection sharing and 2 Nics ?

2003-07-19 Thread |nSaNe
HIya,

Thanks for the detailed replys, I m just about to start on this and
hopefully it wnt keep me up all night.

As to replacing the network ect... I agree that would be the ideal option,
however I am just about to start moving house so cash is tight at the
moment, so originally i did plan to buy a load of new cards and a hub and
eplace the whole thing, however with plans changing its really not a option
at the moment, however it will happen in the (hopefully) not to distant
future.

my network configuration was mentioned, and as I hope to only be doing this
once and I dont want to make a complete mess of it, Could I ask for anyones
advice on what they would consider the best way to configure this ?

I know Internet connections haring as default sets eth0 to

IP = 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0

and s of yet i have been playing about with eth1 on 10.10.1.1 with the same
subnet, hopeing in vein to be able to manually set up the xbox with a
statiuc ip (10.10.1.2) and being able to route it using 10.10.1.1 as a
gateway, but it didnt work.

I am going to look at whats been sugested, and hopefully it will work, but
if there is a optimal setting for this or a setting you would reccomend for
the network cards it would be a great help.

Thanks again with the help so far.

Lee Wilson.

Lee,

Perhaps easier method would be to find one of the older hubs that had
both a cable and cat 5 connectors. (Usually found in the "junk" stores
and swap meets for around 5 bucks to a dollar US.) Then hook the coax
cable up to, then plug in the Xbox to it with a short cat 5. They
usually only operate at 10mbs and they are passive hubs. But it does
work.. (I've done it before.)

Agreed. One question here would be. Every time it does the fsck does
it "fix" the same problem. This would be an indicator of pending disk
failure.

Can't be done, AFAIK. Have you checked to make sure loop module is
loaded? if it isn't loaded, mkinitrd won't work. Try modprob'ing
loop and then try mkinitrd again, see if that works.

Agreed. You might send a note to Sebastiano Vigna <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
about it. I've been working on my own version of the backend script, and I've
changed the first part to:

if [ $# -eq 0 ]; then

if [ ! -x "$i" ]; then
echo "ERROR: can't find Hylafax program $i" 1>&2

done
echo "direct hylafax:/local \"Unknown\" \"Local HylaFAX server\""

so the error gets logged, at least.

It should convert the text file. I'll have to try it. I seem to remember
this problem, but I can't remember if I resolved it or left it on the 'todo'
list. There have been problems in the Hylafax 'textfmt' function, but I'm
not sure if the hylafax.ppd says to convert to Postscript before passing the
file onto Hylafax.

[expert] well I'm back again

2003-07-19 Thread dfox

Well, had some installation headaches in 9.1 but I managed to get some
good help from James Sparenburg (hi James!).

I'm running off of 9.1 and urpmi'ing a whole bunch of stuff. Anyway my
real question now is k3b. The older k3b in 9.0 wasn't too terribly
functional. (I have tried gcombust with some success.) For now k3b in 9.1
seems better, but still I am missing a number of recommended programs -
things like transcode, tccat, tcdecode, stuff like that. I tried urpmi on
them, no lock, none of the packages show up (except for normalize, which
is installed).

I'm still attempting to make a music cd from a number of MP3s, but that's
not working as well as I'd hoped. "Singles" seem fine; I burned a couple
last night, using mpg123. I think my trouble is in getting mpg123 working
inside a shell loop. I had converted a number of mp3s to what I thought
were wav's but gcombust/cdrecord won't recognize them as such. That was
with the stuff in 9.0, maybe things are better in 9.1.

Hi There,

I would just make shure both network cards work, define a bridged interface
that will bridge both NIC's together. The only thing you'll have to take care
of is that instead of ethX you'll have brX.
Use the bridge-utils for that purpose. Pretty easy to install - once you

You need to get transcode (which includes tccat and tcdecode) from PLF.

Set up a urpmi source for them with the procedure at this page:

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon

Set up "contrib" and "updates" sources while you're there; should you want
the latest KDE and Gaim packages, along with several other nice ones, do a
"texstar" one as well. Welcome back! :)

Re: [expert] Connection sharing and 2 Nics ?

2003-07-19 Thread Jim C

James

If you go this route, don't forget to check and see if the Xbox is
backward compatible to 10mbs. It's new stuff with a narrow target
market so it could very well be that the designers never expected it to
be used on 10mbs.

[expert] profile switching

2003-07-19 Thread James Sparenberg
Ok,
Miracles do happen.. I've got wireless working flawlessly on my
laptop. (one letter change in the config file to reflect a different
model of my card uggh.) Now I need to know one thing. Has anyone found
a program that will allow you to create/switch profiles on the fly.
Right now I have 3 ifcfg files that a bash script switches and restarts
pcmcia to get me on one of the nets (home office and generic with no
wepkey) If it's really this simple why are all of the profile programs
I've found requiring me to hold one leg out the window with my tongue on
the right side of my mouth holding down ctrl-alt-delete and 156 entries
in various files to modify lilo on the fly. (ok I exaggerate a bit.)

Is there a simple program that lets me create and switch profiles?
Winders can do it and dang it I want to be able to as well. (without btw
rebooting!)

[expert] no USB mouse in 9.1

2003-07-19 Thread Jeremy Gregorio
I've got an nforce2 board (Asus A7N8X) and a Microsoft optical usb
mouse. My mouse config:

Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier "Mouse1"
   Driver "mouse"
   Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
   Option "Device" "/dev/usbmouse"
   Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
The usbmouse modules wasn't loaded, but I loaded it and restarted X with
no luck. Also tried it with /dev/input/mouse. The mouse worked fine
during the install (and in Redhat 9.0). The kernel that comes with
Mandrake is new enough it should have support for the usb chipset, but I
could be wrong (redhat often back ports stuff from new kernels after
all). Anyone know the fix? TIA :).

Angelo:
Do what Bill said. I got a little quick with my first posting. My case was a
little different from your's: Somehow my 9.1 installation ended up with ext3
on /, but ext2 on /usr and /home. Since running an unjournalled filesystem
during thunderstorm season is Not a Good Idea (TM), I converted /usr and
/home as described earlier -- tune2fs -j /hdbx, edit fstab. Everything is
working just fine. Also, I rebooted after making the changes. (Yeah, I know
that's windowsey, but I'd rather learn that the system has become unbootable
now than a few days down the road.)

Bill:
I've noticed is that the maximum mount counts for the / partition are set to
-1 (never do a filecheck), but for two partitions that were converted to ext3
have maximum mount counts of 21 and 29 (one will be checked every 21st boot,
the other every 29th boot). Should these be reset to -1? Or does that depend
upon my paranoia level?

What is the chipset on your motherboard? It could be poor apic support. Try
starting the kernel with the noapic boot paramter. See here for more info

AFAIK it's actually saying that an NFS mount is trying to find a file
that has been moved or removed on the distant end and no longer viable.
If you don't use NFS removing the rpms for it would probably prevent it
from re-occuring. If you do, sounds like one of your mounts is getting
changed by another user and affecting you. I did notice that around
2.4.19 they were working on this in the kernel... Here is a link to
some of that info.

I had xine working yesterday :(

Have had some bad experiences with having to reinstall and crashes. I'm
limping along, trying to update, but it seems mplayer is a fine product,
and you might have good luck to it. BTW I've had a DVD / cd rw for a
couple of days now :).

I just now tried to urpmi xine and got a wierd conflict in that the miror
I was using (time4t.net -- plf) wanted a certain version for a xine
library and the xine library it had was a later version (9.0 plf, that
is).

To me, installing xine is a little confusing, but I've made it work
before. There are a number of supporting libraries you need, but if you
just do 'urpmi xine' it's unclear which.
