[expert] Installing 9.0 on DawiControl DC100 (HPT-370) "RAID" drives?
Hello! A friend of mine is trying to install 9.0 on a "RAID" 0 array of two hard disks connected to DawiControl DC100 (HPT-370 chipset) controller. Since he's having problems and since he's a newbie and since I can't just walk over ;), I'd like to know if it's possible to install 9.0 on drives which are connected to a DC100. If 9.0 doesn't work - how about 9.1? A properly patched kernel and properly compiled glibc + userland tools allow you to create larger than 2 GB files. The problem is mainly in the kernel and/or glibc and not so much in the used fs. »Franki« sagte am 2002-02-22 um 16:36:59 +0800 : > and I'd have to say that perl and php don't really differ that much in > server load or speed. Well, that's only true if you compare cgi-bin Perl (which most of the hosters only offer) to cgi-bin PHP (which very few hosters offer). If you compare the two most prevalent options (cgi-bin Perl vs. mod_php), cgi-bin Perl greatly looses. The reason is quite simple, because with cgi-bin Perl, the Perl interpreter has to be loaded every time. Not so with mod_php. Now, if you're so lucky to have mod_perl, then you're right. In this case the server load of Perl and PHP is comparable. > 4 Easier to organise huge projects then PHP.. take a look at the code for Why is that? > 6 Age, perl has been around for ages, is very stable and has access to more > system stuff then php, see CPAN above :-). But this holds only so long true, as you write "pure" SQL and don't use any special RDBMS dependent optimizations. So, while you can very easily switch the backend, you really have to take a lot of precautions to ensure that the application still works after the switch. And while I also very much love PHP (and despise Perl for web development), it's also very easy to switch the DB backend in Perl, thanks to the nice DBI package. Also the G450 and Radeon 7200 cost the same: 114 ¤ (~ USD 102). The Radeon has a TV-Out while the G450 has 2xVGA. But I don't think that I'll neither need TV-Out nor 2xVGA (hmm, I'd rather need/want 2xVGA than TV-Out). I currently have a Geforce2 MX. Using the closed source nvidia drivers, I only get 75 Hz @ 1152x864. With the OpenSource/XFree86 drivers, I get 100 Hz. [expert] Which graphics card to get?
Hi! I want to get myself a new graphics card but am uncertain about which one I should get. I think it'll either be a Matrox Millennium G450 DH/G550 or a ATI Radeon 7200. I want to have a high (100Hz@1152x864) refresh rate, good video playback speed (in MPlayer/xine) and good support (drivers). The last reason is why I do not want nvidia. Also the company should be pro-OS. Ah, the drivers should not only be available for Linux, but maybe also for FreeBSD. Not needed is fast games 3D acceleration, because I do not play. Which card would you guys suggest? Can't speak for MandrakeSoft, but it's generally their policy to *not* release new packages just because a software has had a version update. If there's a security issue with a package, Vincent will surely release an update. But other than that: Nope, you're on your own. However, using a Cooker RPM on 8.1 will most likely *not* work, I suppose. If you want RPMs, you can either recompile yourself, or try to use the official Mozilla.org RPMs for RedHat. Well, it's rather easy if you can live with a mozilla being installed in, let's say, ~/mozilla. If that's okay, download a .tar.gz (or even just the installer) from the mozilla site and install it. Just remember that it needs to be in your $PATH before /usr/bin! To do this, I've made myself a ~/bin dir and put ~/bin in my PATH. Now, ~/bin/mozilla is a link to ~/mozilla/mozilla. [expert] bind mount: Howto add to fstab?
Hi! Since kernel 2.4.0 it is possible to mount local directories onto another local dir by entering: mount --bind /tmp /dest But, how would I add such a thing to the /etc/fstab? Using »bind« as the filesystem doesn't work: /tmp /dest binddefaults 0 0 Trying to mount /tmp gives such an error message: mount: fs type bind not supported by kernel So, how would I do this? Yes, it will create some files, but if you're "using" a Windows "server" you're in way greater danger, as Nimda changes your C:\ drive to be publically writable. It can't do so with Samba.
