[expert] Installing 9.0 on DawiControl DC100 (HPT-370) "RAID" drives?

2003-01-12 Thread Alexander Skwar
Hello!

A friend of mine is trying to install 9.0 on a "RAID" 0 array of two hard
disks connected to DawiControl DC100 (HPT-370 chipset) controller.

Since he's having problems and since he's a newbie and since I can't
just walk over ;), I'd like to know if it's possible to install 9.0 on
drives which are connected to a DC100. If 9.0 doesn't work - how about
9.1?

Thanks,

Alexander Skwar

I said, that the glibc package creates the kernel-headers package. This
has been changed some time ago. I don't remember the exact reason, but
search the Cooker list and you'll find the answer.

I used kernel-headers-2.4.18-35mdk.i586.rpm because that's the most
current one on my cooker PC.

However, in KDE 3, there's this lock screen button. When I push this
button, the ugly KDE screensaver pops up. Any idea about how to set
this button to execute any arbitrary command, like "xscreensaver-command

Thanks,

No, it's not a limitation of ext2. A properly patched kernel and
properly compiled glibc + userland tools allow you to create larger than
2 GB files. The problem is mainly in the kernel and/or glibc and not so
much in the used fs.

Well, it's a very bad review, indeed. In the sense, that the author
should not bash Mdk for something that's only the authors fault.

He complains, that the kernel .config doesn't reflect reality.

Well, did he use the correct one from /boot? He doesn't say so, but I
assume he didn't.

This alone let's me assume that he doesn't have a clue and just wants to
bash 8.2. Fine.

Hm, what do you mean by stable? Anyhow, you can have a look at the
cooker mirrors, they also have a SRPMS directory. But remember that
cooker is not stable.

But if you're looking for the latest Mandrake release (8.2), check out
the 8.2 directory on the mirrors. It also has a SRPMS directory
containing kernel-2.4.18.6mkd.

For example:

Hm, isn't pwcheck the pre-1.5.27 daemon? I think I've read that now
saslauthd should be used, no? And for saslauthd there's an init script

Another thing that I find strange, was his /usr/lib/sasl/smtpd.conf
file. It contained lines which should be in /etc/pam.d/smtpd. When I
had postfix+SMTP AUTH somewhat working, I had nothing but pwcheck_method
in there - and this file seemed to be totally ignored, by the way.

I still don't understand. What do you mean by "more complete DB
interfaces"? In PHP, I can very easily use MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle,
ODBC Or what do you mean?

Yes, that's true. In reality, the difference between Perl and PHP isn't
that big.

Well, that's only true if you compare cgi-bin Perl (which most of the
hosters only offer) to cgi-bin PHP (which very few hosters offer). If
you compare the two most prevalent options (cgi-bin Perl vs. mod_php),
cgi-bin Perl greatly looses. The reason is quite simple, because with
cgi-bin Perl, the Perl interpreter has to be loaded every time. Not so
with mod_php.

Now, if you're so lucky to have mod_perl, then you're right. In this
case the server load of Perl and PHP is comparable.

Exactly, that's why *I* take PHP.

I simply do not like it. For web applications, I find PHP *way* easier
(and with most setups: faster) to use. Most of the time, there isn't
mod_perl available, so perl scripts cause a *HUGE* load on the server.

Well, in PHP you need to have the main modules compiled into PHP (or at
least as a module). And then there's PEAR, which will be a CPAN alike.

Well, in *theory*, you're right. But this holds only so long true, as
you write "pure" SQL and don't use any special RDBMS dependent
optimizations. So, while you can very easily switch the backend, you
really have to take a lot of precautions to ensure that the application
still works after the switch.

And while I also very much love PHP (and despise Perl for web
development), it's also very easy to switch the DB backend in Perl,
thanks to the nice DBI package.

You mean, you've got a file which contains the software from a CD and

mount -o loop -t iso9660,ro /path/to/the/file /place/to/mount/it

The important part is the "-o loop" here.

Nice argument :(

The "correct" way to do this, is to add the name of the module to
/etc/modules in Mandrake. This file will be parsed at startup, and
every module mentioned there will be auto loaded.

Well, I don't use rename, so I'd suggest to have a look at my example
with the regexp again. But in the case of pic1, pic2 -> pic1.jpg,
pic2.jpg it's even simpler:

for f in *; do
mv $f $f.jpg
done

You can type this exactly like above on the shell prompt.

Yep, it was an easy example which rename can handle rather well. But
more complex examples will very fast turn down rename. And further, in
my example you can do all sorts of stuff with the $new_name besides
renaming the files. Granted, Ricardo only asked for renaming the files,

mmv can do that. However, I more often end up hacking together a small
regexp, which I then use kinda like this:

files:
a001.png
a231.png
ija231.bmp

Now I'd want to put a _ between the letters and the numbers and also
want to rename them all to .gif

for f in * ; do
new_name=$(echo $f | perl -p -e 's|(\w+?)(\d+)\..*|$1_$2.gif|')
# Or maybe:
# new_name=$(echo $f | perl -p -e 's|([:alpha:]+)(\d+)\..*|$1_$2.gif|')
    echo $new_name
done

regexp's are cool ;)

Ah, so we know now, that the command "mcserv" has opened this port.
mcserv is part of the mcserv (midnight commander) package which belongs

This is supposed to work. However, you've got to make sure that the

Yes, it appears like this mailer resends old messages. I think so,
because also a message by me made it to the list with this mailer.
However, I don't use this mailer (and don't even know what it is).

Well, it's rather easy if you can live with a mozilla being installed
in, let's say, ~/mozilla. If that's okay, download a .tar.gz (or even
just the installer) from the mozilla site and install it. Just remember
that it needs to be in your $PATH before /usr/bin!

To do this, I've made myself a ~/bin dir and put ~/bin in my PATH. Now,
~/bin/mozilla is a link to ~/mozilla/mozilla.

Easy enough for me :)

decent price: Here in Germany, a Matrox Marvel G450 eTV (Bulk, TV-Out,
Video-In, Tuner) costs 254 ¤, a ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon (Retail,
TV-Out, Video-In) costs 254 ¤ (~ USD 227). Also the G450 and Radeon
7200 cost the same: 114 ¤ (~ USD 102). The Radeon has a TV-Out while
the G450 has 2xVGA. But I don't think that I'll neither need TV-Out nor
2xVGA (hmm, I'd rather need/want 2xVGA than TV-Out).

So price-wise there isn't any hint at all ;)

I currently have a Geforce2 MX. Using the closed source nvidia drivers,
I only get 75 Hz @ 1152x864. With the OpenSource/XFree86 drivers, I
get 100 Hz. But since I'd like to watch a movie every now and then, I

[expert] Which graphics card to get?

2002-01-09 Thread Alexander Skwar

Hi!

I want to get myself a new graphics card but am uncertain about which
one I should get. I think it'll either be a Matrox Millennium G450
DH/G550 or a ATI Radeon 7200.

I want to have a high (100Hz@1152x864) refresh rate, good video playback
speed (in MPlayer/xine) and good support (drivers). The last reason is
why I do not want nvidia. Also the company should be pro-OS. Ah, the
drivers should not only be available for Linux, but maybe also for
FreeBSD.

Not needed is fast games 3D acceleration, because I do not play.

Which card would you guys suggest?

Thanks,

After you've installed Mandrake, go to rpmdrake and add a "security"
source. Then update to the latest kernel and everything else you see
fit.

Uhm, I think so, yes. However, it's much easier to have X installed and

Ah. Okay, ncftp isn't the way to go in this case, but you might want to
give lftp a try:

Suppose I want to login to ftp.gnome.org and get the directory listings
of / and of /pub (lacking any other decent example *G*):

[askwar@teich askwar]$ lftp -c 'open ftp.gnome.org ; ls -la / ; ls -la /pub'

Of course you can also upload this way (put) and anything else.

lftp does not only handle ftp, but also http. Futher, it somehow also
seems to be able to do ssh. Although I haven't tried that yet:

xinetd has the same functionality as inetd, however it has some more
features to avoid server overloads and such. man xinetd, man
xinetd.conf.

To setup a new service, have a look at the files in /etc/xinetd.d.
These files control which services should be accessible.

Well, the line wrap is non-existant in your messages. I rewrapped it.

The spec file is in the .src.rpm. You can download it from the usual

So you're rather using a Cooker system by now? Because on a plain 8.1
system, you cannot use a Cooker Mozilla, as it is linked a newer version
of libpng. However, a lot of 8.1 stuff is linked against the 8.1

Can't speak for MandrakeSoft, but it's generally their policy to *not*
release new packages just because a software has had a version update.
If there's a security issue with a package, Vincent will surely release
an update. But other than that: Nope, you're on your own.

However, using a Cooker RPM on 8.1 will most likely *not* work, I
suppose. If you want RPMs, you can either recompile yourself, or try to
use the official Mozilla.org RPMs for RedHat.

I'd try to get the latest cooker kernel, and install it with rpm -ivh,
instead of the usual -Uvh. So:

$ rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.16.9mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

This way, you can easily select at boot which kernel you want and in
case 2.4.16.9mdk gives you any trouble, you can go back to the one
you're using right now.

Yes.

If you don't want to allow indexing of ~user, ~user/public_html needs to
be at least 701; if you want to allow indexing, make it 705.

Nope. It needs to be world executable at least (701 again). 644 won't

Make sure that /home and ~user are world executable, ie. chmod o+x /home

Further, you might want to change /etc/security/msec/perm.??? to reflect
that change. Replace the ??? by the security level you are using.

Well, if you don't have problems, why change the kernel? Is there
anything in 16 which isn't in 13?

Further, if there are security problems, Mandrake *will* release updates
to the kernel, which you can rather easily install using rpmdrake.

[expert] bind mount: Howto add to fstab?

2001-11-15 Thread Alexander Skwar

Hi!

Since kernel 2.4.0 it is possible to mount local directories onto
another local dir by entering:

mount --bind /tmp /dest

But, how would I add such a thing to the /etc/fstab? Using »bind« as
the filesystem doesn't work:

/tmp /dest binddefaults 0 0

Trying to mount /tmp gives such an error message:

mount: fs type bind not supported by kernel

So, how would I do this?

Thanks,

No need to break your fingers when writing the above... And IMO it's

Well, do:
a) Read the man page
b) Read the info page
c) Read the output of tar --help

d1) tar cfvj foo.tar.bz2 foo/
d1a) Note: j is a "new" option. Old tar's used y as the bzip2 switch
d2) tar cfv foo.tar.bz2 --bzip2 foo/
d2a) Note: --bzip2 is a "new" option. Old tar's didn't know how to
handle bzip2
d3) tar cfv foo.tar.bz2 --use=bzip2 foo/
d3a) That's the most compliant way of having tar call bzip2.

uhm, not tested:

lynx -dump url > file 2>/dev/null

Did you export the PATH after you changed it?

Well, yes, of course. But Nimda will not do any harm to Linux/Samba.
Yes, it will create some files, but if you're "using" a Windows "server"
you're in way greater danger, as Nimda changes your C:\ drive to be
publically writable.

It can't do so with Samba. So, there's no risk for Linux users.

PS: No fullquotes. Period.

Well, I'm sure there's just a typo, but the fixed RC1's contain
kde*-2.2.1-1mdk

No, it does not.

[root@teich ALT]# find /mnt -name "kdebase*rpm"
/mnt/loop1/Mandrake/RPMS/kdebase-devel-2.2-64mdk.i586.rpm
/mnt/loop1/Mandrake/RPMS/kdebase-nsplugins-2.2-64mdk.i586.rpm
/mnt/loop1/Mandrake/RPMS/kdebase-2.2-64mdk.i586.rpm

/mnt/loop1 is the first CD of RC1.
