[expert] Modem problems
I'm reposting this because I never got an answer, and it's STILL driving me nuts: The ttyS3 serial port (my modem) keeps losing its uart setting. It would occasionally do this in mdk6.0, and I put at "setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A" in the local init script. Now, under mdk6.1, it loses its uart setting everytime I hang up. For example, the first time I connect with kppp after bootup I have no problem because of the above fix I added. But if I close my connection, then try to open it up later, kppp tells me "modem busy". My recourse it to su to root and run the above command. Does anyone have an idea what is going wrong? I have seen two GUI's operating at the same time with different X consoles, but on the same monitor, that the user could switch between. Maybe the install process could be changed also to install the latest rpms that are in that directory. Mandrake now has an "update mandrake" program. I haven't tried it yet, but it goes to the mandrake update site, lists the updates you don't have, and then you can choose the ones you want. This sounds like a more preferable method. If so, it shut down all programs started under KDE, including kppp. If you want the connection to start automatically everytime you start KDE, just drag a link to kppp into the autostart directory on your desktop. Under LM5.3, you can find kppp under /opt/kde/bin. Just drag it over and select "link" when it asks you. A better way to get to the command line would be 1) start an xterm or konsole; or 2) type ctrl+alt+F2, then type ctrl+alt+F7 to get back to KDE. -- Arandir... ___ http://www.meer.net/~arandir/
[expert] kcontrol behavior
I'm tryping to fix an annoying behavior in the version of KDE that comes with Mandrake. I've traced it down to the the "kcontrol -init" line in the startkde script. What happens is that when X starts, my screen goes to the normal 1280x1024 resolution, with all edges going to the edge of the monitor. However, once "kcontrol -init" runs, the screen resets to the same resolution, but with the edges about 1/2 away from the edge of the monitor. By pressing c-a-- and c-a-+, I can get back to where I want it. My monitor is telling me that I'm running in the same "custom" mode each time. Why is this happening in Mandrake and not Redhat? I need to run "kcontrol -init" so that my settings are restored, so turning it off is not an option. [expert] KDE Install Location
I just noticed that Mandrake installs KDE to the same place that Redhat does (duh!). Putting KDE under /usr (among others) is inconvenient for me for a variety of reasons, among which are the necessity to resize partitions, and installing non-mandrake/redhat KDE rpms. I first thought I'd wait until after the Mandrake installation to install the KDE packages and use the new RPM redirection feature. However, the base installation directory for KDE is not necessarily /usr, so replaceing /usr with /opt/kde would not work 100%. I'd also like to change the GNOME install to /opt/gnome in addition.
