See the excellent page about DVD+RW at:
http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/
Using info on that page I was able to use DVD+RW recorder in Linux,
both as an external (FireWire) and internal drive. I was able to record
both DVD+R and DVD+RW with no problem. So, while cdrecord does not work,
it does not matter, You just use growisofs instead.

I would have to disagree here. In my opinion (and I may be biased, as
I own a DVD+RW burner ...) It is very fortunate that DVD+RW is gaining
momentum as it appears to be a format superior to DVD-R(W). In short: it
is a true packet-writing format, so, in principle, the DVD+RW can be
even used as radom-writing device (think of it as a slow hard-drive).
Again, see the page above for more info.

cdrecord currently supports DVD-R/-RW, but (afaik) does not currently support
DVD+R/+RW drives. From the CDRecord web site: "Cdrecord supports DVD-R and DVD-RW with
all known DVD-writers on all UNIX-like OS and on Win32. "

Unfortunately it seems that the +R/+RW format seems to be gaining momentum. Most of
the DVD recordable drives I've seen on the shelves of computer stores lately have been
+R/+RW format.

I understand that Linux users should stay away from DVD-RW right now,
as there is no standard on how they work. Apparently all are using
proprietary drivers to run them, and while it might be possible to
get one to work, it will only be specific for that brand.

After a standard comes out, there should be a good number of programs
out there to support them.

Re: [expert] w2k shutdown from mdk

2002-11-21 Thread Jim Dawson
I can think of a few options, none of them good.

1: Install VNC on both machines.
2: (if W2k Server) Install Terminal Services Remote Administration mode, Use a linux
RDP client to connect to the W2K. I have seen a RDP client for Linux but can't
remember where, a quick Google search should point you in the right direction.
3: (if W2K Server) Install the Telnet service on the W2k box. Execute the 'Shutdown'
command via telnet. This requires the telnet service be configured to use Kerberos
authentication and the Linux box be in the same kerboros domain. This would introduce
many nasty security holes and I'm not sure it would work anyway.
4: Install a web server (IIS or Apache) and make CGI/ASP script to execute the
'shutdown' command.

[expert] Problems with DHCP client on Mandrake 9.0?

2002-10-22 Thread Jim Dawson
I recently upgraded to Mandrake 9.0 (actually a fresh install, I took the opportunity
to replace my hard drive as well.) and ever since I have been having trouble with my
computer 'forgetting' it's IP address. I haven't been able to confirm this (as I don't
know where the appropriate logs are located) but it seems like the DHCP lease isn't
being renewed. I have switched to a static IP address and it seems to be working OK
(so far).

Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, is there a fix for it?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

I've been using ATI cards with Mdk 8.2 since last May without any
problems to speak of. I initially had an XPERT2000 (Rage 128 Pro, which
gave very nice 2-D performance). I recently switched to a Radeon VE, and
have run it on the 8.2 kernel as well as an upgraded kernel similar to
the one in Mdk 9.0.The drivers supplied by Mdk worked OK.
Have you been able to verify that the proper driver is loaded (driver
information at http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html)? If so, is the
information in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 about the card and driver correct?
By any chance, does the machine giving you these problems have an Athlon
CPU (http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2002-01-21-001-20-NW-KN)?

Be tried this but couldn't get it to work with acceptable performace, but that was
about 10 years ago so it might work OK with today's hardware. Microsoft is supposedly
working on something like this for the next major version of Windows, but I keep
remembering how the 'major new all-32-bit (HA!) replacment for Windows 3.11 was
supposed to come out in '93, then '94, then early '95, then mid-'95, and NT 5.0 was
supposed to come out in '97 then '98, then early '99, then mid-'99, then late-'99,
then 2000. and so on...

I can definitely see the advantage to what you're looking for. You're
trying to build an application layer into the fs (and assume that you
would then remove the raw filesystem access). Nobody to my knowledge
has done this, but it doesn't mean it's a bad idea. It's just an idea
that nobody has found a motivating enough reason to code it for Linux.

It seems to me that I've heard of this somewhere. I'm just trying to
put my finger on where. I'll ask in the reiser list I suppose and see
what others' gut responses are.

I think Douglas Adams had the right idea. (from one of the "Hitchhikers Guide to the

You build an insane asylum inside out, the 'outside of the asylum'. The rest of the

recover.

Problem is that some of the worst inmates are running the asylum.

I completely agree.

Why is it permittied that M$ basically strong arms a vendor into
installing Windows on a new computer, but an organization that freely
gives away machines so today's youth can futher themselves by becoming
familiar with technology, is out of the question. All because that
computer uses a rival, competitor's OS.

It just further shows that M$ is trying to brainwash anybody they can
get their OS on. Yet this is still permitted. Why did they bother
starting a anti-trust law suit against them if they're not going to
punish them for their behavior.

But that's just another rant... *sigh*

In my case it was /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow which prevented

Usually being unable to connect to leafnode with one's nntp client means
that xinetd hasn't been setup to allow it.

Do you have an entry in xinetd.d for leafnode?

It should look like the following:

service nntp

socket_type = stream
wait= no
user= news
server  =/usr/sbin/leafnode
log_on_failure +=USERID

Re: [expert] NFS and DHCP

Another way would be to configure your DHCP server to use Dynamic DNS,
since (if I remember correctly) you can put hostnames in the
/etc/exports file rather than IP addresses.

If I recall correctly, the BlueOS people were talking about using Berlin
as a windowing system. The web page for the Berlin project can be found
at www.berlin-consortium.org. Quite frankly, I don't think that BlueOS
is viable as there is too much diference between BeOS and Linux at the
kernel level, at best they will be able to do is come up with a version
of Linux that looks sort of like BeOS. I would like to see OpenBeOS
(open-beos.sourceforge.net) succeed, but it looks like a pretty
ambitious project... Anyway, enough about BeOS. It's too depressingly
similar to what happened with Amiga...

Personally, I'm not to optimistic that a viable replacment for X is
going to happen anytime soon. Sure, X has it's warts but it works well
enough for most applications that developing an alternative isn't too
high a priority. And besides, any alternative display system will need
to have an 'X' compatability layer to run existing software, which will
make it even slower than X displays.

[expert] Switching SCSI controller

2001-12-03 Thread Jim Dawson

I need to swap SCSI controllers on my Mandrake 8.1 box. Fortunately the only device
currently on the existing controller is a tape drive. The hard drives are all IDE.

What do I need to do to get the new SCSI controller configured (a Mylex BT-950) and to
have the tape drive accessed using its original name? (/dev/st0)

Thanks in advance.

The Adaptec ATA-RAID 2400 supports RAID 5. I think Promise also has an ATA RAID card
that supports RAID 5.

You DO NOT have to have identical drives to use ide raid cards. If you
expect to create a RAID array with either hardware OR software, you
calculate based on the smallest drive in the array. You can have 4
drives consisting of a 10GB, a 15GB and two 20GB and RAID 0 will yield
you 40GB total while RAID 1 will yield 20GB. Obviously not the most
effecient setup with EITHER type of RAID, but it will work.

Check out this link:
http://dukeofurl.dhs.org/reviews/misc/promisehowto/2.shtml

I would also add that RAID controlled by the operating system (doesn't
matter which one you choose WindowsNT which also has a softRAID or
Linux), will NEVER be as fast or efficient as hardware (even
"semi-hardware" products as the promise ide cards).

Mike

> WinRAIDs, anyone?

I really wouldn't compare to Winmodems as they are DESIGNED to work only
with Windows - that's a little misleading when comparing to the RAID
card which DOES offer linux drivers.

Re: [expert] Importing Oracle SQL scripts into MySQL

2001-10-23 Thread Jim Dawson

Even if the scripts use standard SQL commands, you may need to do some editing. The
syntax of many of the Oracle SQL commands is kind of funky. Even MS SQL Server uses a
more standard SQL syntax than Oracle.

Subject: [expert] Importing Oracle SQL scripts into MySQL

Hello!

I need some help/advice regarding databases. At college we are using Oracle 8i
as server for our DB lab classes. The teacher give us some exercises, that I can
only do at classes, since I don't have Oracle at home. I tried the Oracle 8i
personal edition. Horrible... 600M of disk space, slow... I´m trying now MySQL
that is already working.

The problem is: to do the exercices at home, I need a demo DB that comes with
Oracle (a script named something like BDEDEMO.SQL), but I can't import that
script to MySQL, seems that the clauses are a little different and since I don't
have any expertise with DB I don't know what to do.

Does anybody knows some tool to import/transform an Oracle dump script into a
MySQL dump script???

TIA

[expert] Can't install Kernel 2.4.3 Source/Headers

2001-09-18 Thread Jim Dawson

I am trying to install the source and headers for my installed kernel
(2.4.3) but Mandrake Software Installer insists on installing the 2.4.7
source and headers.

When I try to install it by hand I get 'error: failed dependencies:
kernel-headers = 2.4.7-12.3mdk is needed by kernel-source-2.4.7-12.3mdk

Can anyone suggest a workaround for this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Most KDE apps will work under Gnome and vice-versa as long

The Epson Color Stylus 900 (about $400 the last time I

for Windows use) and is very pleased with it. I have an
