I was able to record both DVD+R and DVD+RW with no problem. So, while cdrecord does not work, it does not matter, You just use growisofs instead. Unfortunately it seems that the +R/+RW format seems to be gaining momentum. Most of the DVD recordable drives I've seen on the shelves of computer stores lately have been +R/+RW format. I would have to disagree here. In my opinion (and I may be biased, as I own a DVD+RW burner ...) It is very fortunate that DVD+RW is gaining momentum as it appears to be a format superior to DVD-R(W). In short: it is a true packet-writing format, so, in principle, the DVD+RW can be even used as radom-writing device (think of it as a slow hard-drive). Again, see the page above for more info. Re: [expert] w2k shutdown from mdk
I can think of a few options, none of them good. 1: Install VNC on both machines. 2: (if W2k Server) Install Terminal Services Remote Administration mode, Use a linux RDP client to connect to the W2K. I have seen a RDP client for Linux but can't remember where, a quick Google search should point you in the right direction. 3: (if W2K Server) Install the Telnet service on the W2k box. Execute the 'Shutdown' command via telnet. This requires the telnet service be configured to use Kerberos authentication and the Linux box be in the same kerboros domain. This would introduce many nasty security holes and I'm not sure it would work anyway. 4: Install a web server (IIS or Apache) and make CGI/ASP script to execute the 'shutdown' command. -Original Message- From: Tony S. [expert] Problems with DHCP client on Mandrake 9.0?
I recently upgraded to Mandrake 9.0 (actually a fresh install, I took the opportunity to replace my hard drive as well.) and ever since I have been having trouble with my computer 'forgetting' it's IP address. I haven't been able to confirm this (as I don't know where the appropriate logs are located) but it seems like the DHCP lease isn't being renewed. I have switched to a static IP address and it seems to be working OK (so far). Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, is there a fix for it? Thanks in advance. I have never set up any IP chains/tables and haven't the foggiest on how to go about it.. Network as it is now uses static IP addressing in the 192.168.x.x range and works fine but it would be nice to be able to just plug in my laptop or whatever and have it automagically become *part of the family*... [expert] Switching SCSI controller
I need to swap SCSI controllers on my Mandrake 8.1 box. Fortunately the only device currently on the existing controller is a tape drive. The hard drives are all IDE. What do I need to do to get the new SCSI controller configured (a Mylex BT-950) and to have the tape drive accessed using its original name? (/dev/st0) Thanks in advance. The Adaptec ATA-RAID 2400 supports RAID 5. I think Promise also has an ATA RAID card that supports RAID 5. -Original Message- From: Mike Tracy Holt [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2001 17:54:35 -0800 Subject: Re: [expert] Promise Fastrak 100 lite - anyone? civileme wrote: snip OK let's look at the software RAIDs Hardware Cards Linux Software RAID Extents 1 16 RAID Types 0, 1 0+10,1,4,5 Identical drivesYes Irrelevant Volume mgr No Volumes can be pieces of up to 16 drives Setup at installNo, requires kernel modsYes Cost $30-100 extra Your time Journaling filesystems will work with both. snip You DO NOT have to have identical drives to use ide raid cards. If you expect to create a RAID array with either hardware OR software, you calculate based on the smallest drive in the array. You can have 4 drives consisting of a 10GB, a 15GB and two 20GB and RAID 0 will yield you 40GB total while RAID 1 will yield 20GB. Obviously not the most effecient setup with EITHER type of RAID, but it will work. Check out this link: http://dukeofurl.dhs.org/reviews/misc/promisehowto/2.shtml I would also add that RAID controlled by the operating system (doesn't matter which one you choose WindowsNT which also has a softRAID or Linux), will NEVER be as fast or efficient as hardware (even semi-hardware products as the promise ide cards). Mike WinRAIDs, anyone? I really wouldn't compare to Winmodems as they are DESIGNED to work only with Windows - that's a little misleading when comparing to the RAID card which DOES offer linux drivers. Re: [expert] Importing Oracle SQL scripts into MySQL
Even if the scripts use standard SQL commands, you may need to do some editing. The syntax of many of the Oracle SQL commands is kind of funky. Even MS SQL Server uses a more standard SQL syntax than Oracle. -Original Message- From: Jose Orlando T. Ribeiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Expert Linux [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 14:40:20 -0200 Subject: [expert] Importing Oracle SQL scripts into MySQL Hello! I need some help/advice regarding databases. At college we are using Oracle 8i as server for our DB lab classes. The teacher give us some exercises, that I can only do at classes, since I don't have Oracle at home. I tried the Oracle 8i personal edition. Horrible... 600M of disk space, slow... I´m trying now MySQL that is already working. The problem is: to do the exercices at home, I need a demo DB that comes with Oracle (a script named something like BDEDEMO.SQL), but I can't import that script to MySQL, seems that the clauses are a little different and since I don't have any expertise with DB I don't know what to do. Does anybody knows some tool to import/transform an Oracle dump script into a MySQL dump script??? [expert] Can't install Kernel 2.4.3 Source/Headers
I am trying to install the source and headers for my installed kernel (2.4.3) but Mandrake Software Installer insists on installing the 2.4.7 source and headers. When I try to install it by hand I get 'error: failed dependencies: kernel-headers = 2.4.7-12.3mdk is needed by kernel-source-2.4.7-12.3mdk Can anyone suggest a workaround for this problem? Re: [expert] Microsoft will not be divided
A) Bill Gates ( Microsoft) spended lot of money for the Bush electoral campaign Here's a small hole in your theory: If I'm not mistaken Scott McNeiley(sp) (CEO Sun Microsystems and all-around M$ hater) was also a big Bush contributor.
Re: [expert] Gnome, Helix, KDE?
Most KDE apps will work under Gnome and vice-versa as long as you have all of the components the application requires installed. Looking for input on desktop environment. I am presently running MDK 7.2 with a custom 2.4.4 kernel. I use KDE 2.1, which seems to be working pretty well for me. The major drawback I have is that of not having a great email/addressbook/syncing to Visor client. I have been looking at a switch to Gnome, partly because Evolution looks like it is going to be an excellent option when it finally does emerge. I find, however, that the version of Gnone that came with the stock MDK 7.2 leaves a lot to be desired. Firstly, whenever I try to log off from a Gnome session, it hangs my system (this is virtually the only thing I have found to hang my Linux system in 6 months of daily use) and I have to power down and reboot. Secondly, I find that many apps just crash (this happens a bit with KDE to, but not often). Finally, I have been thinking of using Kapital (by theKompany.com) as a quicken replacement so I can finally get rid of windows completely, but when I last checked, Kapital was only going to be supported under KDE because, they told me, of stability issues with Gnome. I was thinking of getting the current release of Helix Gnome which they claim works with MDK 7.2. Any advice, tips, pitfalls?
Re: RE: [expert] ATI Radeon - hardware acceleration
You can check to see if DRI is enabled in Xfree86 by checking your Xfree86 config file. You should have a line that states: Load "DRI" However, I do not know if the radeon is currently supported for DRI. Sorry in that respect. Best of luck! I think I saw something about XFree 4.0.3 (just released a few days ago) supporting DRI on ATI Radeon.
Re: [expert] Re: Epson or HP Printers
The Epson Color Stylus 900 (about $400 the last time I priced one) is pretty nice, My father-in-law has one (albeit for Windows use) and is very pleased with it. I have an Epson C.S. 860 (about $150-200) and it works quite well under both Windows and Linux. Would some one please reco either an Epson or HP printer in the US$500 range for use with Mandrake 7.2 and up. TIA
