[expert] Internal Server and Firewall Conf

2002-02-12 Thread nds

I am trying to setup a network with the following configurations:

pentium mmx 32mb floppy no harddrive linux router using coyotelinux3.1
(modified lrp (linux router project)) -Router/Server
  | w-(12.10.34.68) l-(192.168.1.1)
  |
 ---
 | |
 | |
amd k6-II mail and http server pentium 4 development workstation
static ip (192.168.1.10)   dhcp (192.168.1.100)

I can not see my server on 192.168.1.10. I honestly don't even know
where to begin to configure a mail server to draw email from six email
accounts and send them to one user let alone two other external email
accounts to another internal user! Any advice would be appreciated. I
primarily would like to get my webserver configured and then all the
rest is secondary.

Couldn't you save the configurationg of a happy Mandrake kernel that you
customized and load that into the configuration of a source tarball
kernel? Wouldn't that still provide a happy medium? You can also do a
"diff" between the configuration file of a happy mandrake kernel and the
configuration file of a source kernel file? Just a thought. HTH

When you rebuilt your kernel to the 2.4.17 from source, did you read in
the source tree "Documentation/Changes", first? These tell you the
minimum install of packages that are necessary for your kernel to
function properly. Like binutils, reiserfsprogs, iptables, iproute2, and
etc. This helped me alot. Hopefully, it will do the same for you.

I did this to find out for you:

whereis librpm.so.0

result:

/usr/lib/librpm.so

I next do:

rpm -qf /usr/lib/librpm.so

On my Cooker system I get:

rpm-devel-4.0.3-0.34mdk

Next file I do:

whereis libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3

I get:

libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3:

So I next try:

locate libstdc++

I get a list of files and one that closely matches yous:

/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3

So I finally do:

rpm -qf /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3

And get on my Cooker machine:

libstdc++-2.10-2.96-0.69mdk

I listed your answer this way to let you know that there are more than
one way to troubleshoot and find your answer. Some files can not be
found by rpm without listing their complete path name as well. HTH

Does Chromium work for you also? If it doesn't chances are you are
missing a config file for openal in your home directory. Try this fix
and let me know if it works:

create file .openalrc and be sure to not forget the "."!

touch .openalrc

edit the file and input this one line:

vi .openalrc

(define native-use-select #f)

and be sure to not forget the parenthesis! HTH

It could have been that they had incorrectly put in one digit or more
incorrectly. Like when I first started to SSH my home network. I would
do that and so would the other guy that I was contacting mistakernly. We
got past that and now him and I no longer SSH each other by mistake. We
both have the same service thus why our IP addresses were so equivalent.
If it repeats then make attempts to contact them like I did. HTH

Do you have rdate or ntp set and running on your system? Both at the
same time? If either one, remove and then reinstall those programs and
run them again. If both, choose. If neither, try one and force that
program to sync your computer. That should fix your problem.IHTH

It could be the kernel. Try to install LM 8.1 with 2.2.19 instead of
2.4.8. Maybe that will help and fix your installation blues. HTH

I would like to know "expert" information like can you do a single line
command to execute more than one task at once like you can regularly in

make config && make this && make that && make complete

ls -l | grep core

ps -A | more

Those, of course, are examples unrelated to ftp commands but you get the

his cdrw uses an Adaptec 2930U and so you will need an aic7xxx driver
to use this writer. Here are the links;

http://people.redhat.com/dledford/aic7xxx.html #old site for this driver

Well, in defense of myself I did say replace "ide-scsi" with the
appropriate driver which in his case would be sg or something to that
effect, even though in the "CD-Writer Howto" it says that all SCSI
drivers should work. Speaking of which... you are guilty of the same
criime, brother, that others made on this list. How are you going to
point out the problem without providing the solution? That is just
wasting space and time. Chances are people are hurriedly reading and
answering the list, while hoping that the person receiving help from
them has enough IQ to "substitute" the driver we specified with one that
he was given... correction, had given us in the list. You forgot to
mention the device, also while we are pointing out things. What if his
cdrw is not "/dev/hdc"? I guess he would just be "stuck" waiting to send
another email message asking if it would be a good idea to put the
device, that he knows that he has in place of the one we mentioned to
him? And finally.. the last I checked this was a voluntary list for
experts. I don't mean to seem upset but I am ... a little. I am mostly
on this list providing support. I rarely ask for helop because not much
change at my end that I don't conquer on my own or with the help of
people on this list. I more then anything spend my time providing
solutions, hunting down answers, and all around just supporting where
ever I can and then you come and provide this type of feedback? With no
correctoins or solutions whatsoever? Sometimes one should look at
himself before he starts fires (Especially, when he is wearing gasoline
drawers in a pool of alchohol stepping out of a kerosene shower with
short matches wearing a C4 vest with a very very short (emphasis on
short) wick. There I have said my peace and nuked this letter. Take this
as constructive criticism and be mindful of others efforts and feelings
in the future. . o O (I can't believe I took this personal!? Must be the
hundreds of emails I go through everyday trying to help for free or
something?)cheers and I apologize.

The solution is simple.. o O (I think) You have your hardware set to the
GMT timezone, as that is the exact number of timezones from the GMT or
in otherwords, the Universal Time Coordinated to Pacific
Daylight-savings Time (PDT). Change that and you should be all good.
Just use MCC (Mandrake Control Center). HTH

Hindsight:

reverse the numbers of your ip for what you are trying to do or
substitute them for values/variables like "localip", "remoteip",
"localnet", and so on.

To your question:

What are you trying to do as I haven't been watching any threads
concerning firewalls. Even though I have questions of my own concerning
that subject. Are you saying that you are trying to setup firewall to
tunnel through port 93 through your eth1 interface? My knowledge of
iptables is limited compared to my knowledge of ipchains. I have to work
with both, really. My firewall/router uses ipchains and each of my
computers on my network individually are configured with iptables. The
solution to your answer will be an additiion to my firewalls. As far as
you being hacked, you don't have prelude, tripwire, or any other
intrusion detection programs? If not, that sucks and we live and we learn .

Type "/sbin/lsmod" and let me know what you get. If you do not see
ide-scsi or any other type of scsi module then we have found your
problem. Just simply add to lilo "hdc=ide-scsi" or what ever is the

Depends on your hardware. How many computers, how many NIC cards, and
what all do you want to do with this network? Answer these and then I
can show you how deep the rabbit hole really is. ;-)

LoL You would not believe this but the "fix" to Xine was missed by my
own ignorance! It was mentioned in the docs and I zipped right pass it
everytime! Now I have Xine and Ogle working fine on my computer. The
problem with getting these programs to work with LM 8.1 and LM 8.2
cooker is that if you have a CDRW/DVD Combo drive, you don't get any raw
devices for your drive generated. Only the CD writer script gets
executed completely. I had to create "/dev/dvd, /dev/rawctl, /dev/raw1,
/dev/raw2 (not needed but just in case;-)), and /dev/rdvd".

/dev/dvd is made the same way that my /dev/scd0 is made. My /dev/scd0 is
a link to rawdevice scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd (My cdwriter). ie a
"ls -l" will produce on my computer:

/dev/dvd -> scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd
/dev/scd0 -> scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd

Next I had to make a raw device. In the DVD-Howto you have a choice
between that in creating a stin/stout files. I felt using the device was
best for performance reasons which I think is true in my case. You will
need to have fileutils-4.1-5mdk (It has mknod which we will need) and
util-linux-2.11m-4mdk (that has raw, the other program we will need).

/bin/mknod /dev/rawctl c 162 0
/bin/mknod /dev/raw1 c 162 1
/bin/mknod /dev/raw2 c 162 2
/bin/mknod /dev/raw3 c 162 3
/bin/mknod /dev/raw4 c 162 4

/usr/bin/raw /dev/raw1 /dev/dvd

ln -s /dev/raw1 /dev/rdvd

Then run and exectute xine or ogle. For xine use:

xine -pq dvdnav://

and for ogle

ogle -u cli /dev/dvd

or just plain

ogle

if you want a graphical version to run. I hope this helps and this is my
success story.

Where did you hear that?! Not true unless I'm poorly mistaken but I only
had to have access to an "account" from the computer I'm trying to
access. Is that what you mean? You are trying to access a computer

I don't know much about that book but I have been building my own RPMs
for over a year now and I still don't know everything that goes into it.
What I did to learn in the beginning was look into the "spec" file of
successful custom RPMs (they usually were "mdk" packages). I would
compare the spec file from a regular (non-mdk) RPM and a "mdk" RPM. I
noticed that besides occasional directory changes, Mandrake uses "bzip"
tarballs and not "tar.gz" or "tgz" tarballs. Another change is that
Mandrake prefers to "patch" up the current version tarball. As far as
your quesion regarding having "%files lists _all_ your files, you are
reading too much into this. You know how when you uncompress tarballs
and they open up with their own directory with files in each directory?
Well that is basically what you are doing, you list these newley created
directories for where all the files will be located. I will give you an
example:
(We will make a package for a file called "IPTalk". We are going to skip
down to the %file portion of the package)

%files
%defattr (-,root,root)
%/usr/bin/iptalk
%attr (755,root,root) %/usr/lib/iptalk/*
%doc doc/CREDITS NEWS COPYING AUTHORS doc/FAQ README ChangeLog
%/usr/share/*/*/*
%/usr/share/pixmaps/iptalk.xpm
%/usr/share/gnome/apps/Internet/iptalk.desktop

%files applet
%defattr (-,root,root)
%/usr/bin/iptalk
%attr (755,root,root) %/usr/bin/iptalk_applet
%doc doc/CREDITS NEWS COPYING AUTHORS doc/FAQ README ChangeLog
%/usr/lib/iptalk/*
%/usr/share/locale/*/*/*
%/usr/share/pixmaps/iptalk.xpm
%/usr/share/pixmaps/iptalk/*
%/usr/share/gnome/apps/Internet/iptalk.desktop
%/etc/iptalk/*

That is all I had to list for my iptalk (fictional program using gnome gtk).

Generic kernel compile for "i486/i586/i686". Specify for Pentium II or
Pentium 4 and then you you will have a program that will more then
likely be processor specific, especially if you use your program for
multimedia applications.

That not helping part has been very prevalent lately. I guess everyone
has been busy trying to enjoy the holidays with their families. I have
posted many questions that I have not received a singel answer to yet!
Two of them I had figured out, evenutually for myself and posted the
solutions. As long as we post solutions then I am content wether I solve
it on my own or someone else helps out. Just as long as we help one
another. It is amazing what can be solved in a little amount of time
with just one question being answered. I apologize for not posting
earlier to this message not that I am knowledgeable or anything with zsh
but I am resourceful.

I found that locale is a program part of glibc-2.2.4-18mdk on my system.
My kernel supports CP437. I think that I have to reinstall my cooker
package for it to work.

Sounds like you configured each computer with different security levels.
On top of that, the computer/server sounds like it is "hosed" because
linuxconf made some changes. I recommend editing everything through
linuxconf before totally giving up and reinstalling your system. I know
that you are trying to work with the problem and saving a reinstallation
as a last result, otherwise you wouldn't have posted to this site.
Another "sound" that I hear about your system is that it sounds like
your filesystem could use a fsck or reiserfschk.HTH

Wouldn't be simpler to create a cron job to remove the af_packet from
the kernel instead? Wouldn't that take away their internet access? or
IP_Sec? Isn't that simpler? or you don't have that "type" of access to
their machines?

Did you do a "make oldconfig"? or try to use the config from your old
working kernel? Use that and then recompile. Your problems should be
solved. I hope this helps

I just downloaded VMWare soon after posting my prior message. I'm going
to try them all. I hope VMWare can do WMA in 98/2000/XP because those
the other operating systems that I have on my systems. I will post to
the list my success with VMWare and Win4Line (when it arrives).

[expert] CDRW/DVD Combo

2001-12-17 Thread nds

I can burn disks to my CD-RW/DVD Combo drive but I don't know how to
work the DVD part. Can anyone help me?

My CDRW/DVD is a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B. HardDrake has it listed
twice. One is listed as:
---
Vendor: Unknown

Model: SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-308B

Device: /dev/hdd

Bus Type: ATAPI/IDE

and the other as:

Vendor: SAMSUNG

Model: CDRW/DVD SM-308B

Device: /dev/scd0

Bus Type: SCSI

I don't see /dev/hdd when I do a "ls -l /dev/hd*". I am using Linux
Mandrake 8.1
