[expert] ADSL Itex driver for Mandrake 9.0?
I don't know weather this is a newbie or expert question, so I send it to both lists. I have installed Mandrake 9.0 in a partition of my PC. Everything went OK, but not for my ADSL Itex PCI card: Mandrake didn't recongnize it and I have a Linux PC which cannot connect to the Internet. I have searched the Web, found some drivers but none worked; the last is a itex1577-2.4.16.o driver; I installed it, but when I try to activate it with the insmod commad, the computer crashes, even the mouse is frozen and I have to restart. Maybe it is a problem of kernel; this driver is for kernel 2.4.16, while Mandrake 9.0 has 2.4.19. Does anyone know a working driver for this unfortunate ADSL card? Obviously I mean a driver which works with Mandrake 9.0 and kernel 2.4.19. I have a dlink DSL504 and I have to say, its very nice. I have flashed the latest firmware on it and the web interface is very nice, as an added benefit, it has a serial point, with witch i can connect my linux box and script commands to the router where necessary. It sounds like the South African telco either has more customers than facilities or someone, somewhere, decided that it's much better to waste switch and adsl processing time checking to see how long you've been there. Which surprises me cause it's a waste of resources and can do nasty things to the switching. Not to put too fine a point on it, it also seems that someone needs to learn to splice a cable. That sort of thing, even when we were a monopoly, would have landed someone in serious trouble. I understand your problem now. If your ADSL modem is hooked to eth0, and you get your IP address via DHCP, then you can place a script in the /etc/dhcpc/ directory with the name "dhcpcd-eth0.exe" (don't forget to make it executable!) and it will run every time the dhcpcd daemon determines that your IP address on that interface has changed. I use it to run a lynx command that hits a page on the ZoneEdit.com site, which determines the IP address that the hit came from, and updates my DNS entries there accordingly. I want to keep an eye on my ip address off my adsl line, as it changes I would like a scirpt to run, basically uploading to a hosted out website. Currently I use a cron job every 15 mins that checks if the current ip is the same as the last in /var/log/syslog, if not then and only then upload it. I do not run any mail services, I do however run apache live for webpages only. It is on a text only machine, Mandrake9.1, P1 100mhz, that doubles as my gateway for small lan at home. If anyone has pointers, please share. I dont really want to run dyndns just yet, but if this turns out to be the best solution, then so be it, I will. [expert] ADSL connection
Hi guys, Just a quick one... my home server has an ADSL connection using PPPOE.. it usually takes ages to actually get going, but once going it is fine.. Anyway, the problem is, that occasionally the connection is reset by peer and it again takes ages to restart the connection. I use this box to monitor the availability of our other servers.. so if one goes down, the perl monitor script I knocked up plays a wav file at 100db, and then sends me and the other admin an email. It all works fine until the adsl plays up.. now the questions I have are these: 1. How can I get pppoe to log somewhere other then syslog. (pref a pppoe log.) 2. How can I get a more verbose description of why the connection is taking so long to happen. (ie is there any way to actually see the handshaking and whatnot actually happening like you can in normal ppp???) 3. my ADSL ISP supports a dialup line for times when the ADSL is down, is there a way to set it up so that the dialup happens automatically if the adsl dies? and then swaps back at a later time? Any help would be really great, if the last one has no answer in linux, I guess its time to get creative with perl and write one. This is with smoothwall. mdk will not install on a 512mb hd. eithernet option is not available. uSB is fine as i have an old machine, i dont have to leave my desktop on then either. I swear by the linksys BEFSR41. FYI a router should be not be platform dependent at all. Anyway it's a great router. You access it through any web browser. It also handles pppoe if your dsl provider requires it. So i'd say, keep your existing adsl modem and get the router as an addon. It also makes home networking a breeze. You're right on in one respect: ADSL is being used from the dsl modem to the DSLAM (at the provider's access point; usually a local telephone switch facility) From the modem to you should be ethernet TCP/IP. In other words, DSL is transparent to your computer. It's merely the medium over which your TCP/IP packets are being sent. Your modem is assinged an IP for your default gateway. If you purchase a router like the one I mentioned, it will set itself up to the modem's default gateway IP and therefore becomes the new gateway for your network. It's set up for dhcp by default which makes networking your machines a snap. You can also specify static IP, though it's not necessary. Another nice thing is that it's also a 4 port switch, which allows you to share your internet connection with up to 4 computers and up to 255 if you break it out to more switches or hubs (a whole subnet) The beauty of the switch is that you'll be able to do full duplex connections between 2 PCs on your home network (200mbps) In addition, the router gives you a class C subnet structure (192.168.XXX.XXX) which makes it virtually inaccessable from outside your subnet (unless you forward a port or set a machine as DMZ host) It's almost a perfect firewall. so you don't have to worry about firewalling software (unless you want to protect your machine from others in your own network) Hope this helps. I bought a PCI USB card (get one thats compatible) for £12, installed it, uploaded the mgmt.o firmware, and it connected, now i can administer it over http and it just sits with no monitor doing its stuff :) installs on small HD's fine and as its free software they let you download it. Really? I can't even get Mandrake 9.0 to recognise my speed touch, how does smoothwall recognise it? BTW.. by old pc .. I assume you mean a PC that has USB. The only old PC's I have are a 486 (no usb) and a sparc station IPC (no usb). Really, rather than buy a router, I'd just like the speed touch to work (be recognised at first) by mandrake 9. Hi, What you need to do is register your mac with Telus. Their DHCP server will give ip only to registered mac address. It's an always on connection, you don't need to use pppoe, just plain old dhcp client would be fine. If you are close to Vancouver, I can give you a hand. I finally got a chance to work with this again and this time got in touch with the isp. it turns out that they one of those that bind the client eth0 h/w addr into their config. I am not an expert and have never done this in practice. Anyway... My understanding is that PPPoE and DHCP are mutually exclusive (see also http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/configure.html). Which one does your Telco use? Assuming it is PPPoE, ifconfig should show both the ppp and the eth interfaces up. What does ifconfg show when you configure pppoe (not dhcp)? I have 6 of those requiring the de4x5 driver and five of them don't work correctly in 8.1. There were about 80 field engineering mods on this chipset/card and the driver simply doesn't cover them all. So invest 9.95 to get a cheap implementation of an rtl8139 and you will work fine. Hello The module for the network card is not loading - that is why the network is unreachable. This may be becuase you are trying to load the wrong module for your network card. Hi all ! I have an static IP ADSL connection. I have an IP add and a gateway. My ADSL modem is connected in a HUB and my network card is connected in that HUB. I use this config in Win2k and worked fine, i just give the IP with the correct netmask and the gateway. In LM 7.2 my network card doesnt work fine, when i type ifconfig it shows only the Lo(loopback interface). The module for the netcard is installed, RTL8139...but i allways get "temporaly unavaliable" when trying to UP the eth0 interface and "network is unreacheble" when trying the route add command. Does it, for instance, require PPP over Ethernet, or does it not give you a static IP, you have to do DHCP, etc? Those 'extras' (i.e., garbage to make the DSL provider's life easier or whatever) will make life far more difficult for you. My DSL provider doesn't do that, which is nice - so over here, it is a static IP connection; all I do is ifconfig and route and I'm online :). You might want to peek into your Windows configuration files and see if there is anything that would make it seem as if you were using dhcp or ppp over ethernet etc. Did Earthlink give you 'connection' software, for instance? No PPPoE and DHCP are two different things. PPPoE requires an extra piece of software on Linux in order to work. You need to find out whether or not your provider uses PPPoE. Dear friends Would very much appreciate your help with figuring out why my new Earthlink/Covad/ADSL works in Win98 but not in Linux. I received my Earthlink self-install kit this afternoon and spent an hour on the phone with Earthlink tech support installing my new ADSL. There was a problem at first with having Windows recognize my ADSL. That is, the ADSL light did not come on. That was quickly solved: When I removed the splitter and connected the phone line directly to the jack, the ADSL light came on automatically and all was well. It's a ZyXel ADSL modem. I was then able to use a better kind of splitter and now I can run my ADSL on Windows and my telephone on the same line (it's a line-sharing type of ADSL, not a dedicated line). So, all is well in Windows. When I booted up to Linux, Linux could not detect my ADSL. The eth0 refuses to recognize my ADSL. After two minutes I get a big fat red X and it moves on. (By the way, Earthlink's ADSL modem is made by a different company than the one used by Bellsouth or by Juno/Covad) I installed networking last night in anticipation of my new ADSL. I may have caused problems in the process. Using DrakConf's Network installation I found that there are two options for installation, each involving different ways of setting up dhcp in Linux. One says: pppop (something like that -- unfortunately, I am in Windows right now) and another says: non-pppop (really apologize for not writing this down beforehand). At any rate, when I installed Juno/Covad ADSL two months ago, I selected the "non-" option and Linux immediately installed the dhcpd file. When I rebooted, Juno ADSL was immediately recognized. No problem. This time around, though, I selected the first option and installed a certain number of files from my 2-CD LM 7.2. I then decided that perhaps I had made a mistake and went back and selected the second "non" option. In other words, I now had selected both options. This time, in addition to the first set of files, I got the dhcpd file. The main difference I noticed (last night before the installation of Earthlink/ADSL and now after ADSL) is that upon booting up, Linux took an extra 30 or more seconds to take me into the console (where I log on into KDE2. Previously, my last "stop" on the Aurora bootup ladder was portsentry. It would quickly get a green check mark and go right into my console. This time, after getting the green check mark for Portsentry, Linux waits another 30-40 seconds before taking me uneventfully into the console. I though last night that this might be solved by Linux when it recognizes my ADSL. I hope that is the case. I mention this only because I clearly noticed this change in my bootup and thought it might be related to my choice of both options in DrakConf's Networking/ADSL installation. What may seem insignificant to me may be important in your troubleshooting. I talked to Earthlink's tech support about Linux. They said that I should have no problem in running their ADSL in Linux. It's just that they do not support it. Obviously, I had no problem running either Bellsouth's ADSL or Juno's ADSL and should certainly have no problem running Earthlink's ADSL (both Juno and Earthlink use Covad). But I have no idea what the problem is. I tried booting up to Linux with a direct telephone line to the wall jack, that is, without the splitter. It won't connect. That is, the ADSL button won't light up on the ADSL modem (the other three buttons do come on solid green). Could someone please help? Thanks so much. [expert] ADSL connection and local networks
I'm having trouble configuring an ADSL connection for my home network with DrakConf. I have two computers and one ADSL modem connected to a hub (AOpen 5-port Ethernet Hub). It would be better if two machines could use the modem independently. I have configured the Internet connection using DrakConf and all the routing configuration appears to be reset whenever the adsl service is started. This is no good because those computers cannot reach each other anymore. I have to do /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart in order to restore my routing configuration. I put /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart in /etc/rc.local, so I don't have to run that command manually. It doesn't seem to be the smartest solution, but it works. But the problem is that Mandrake Linux configuration tools don't seem support sophisticated LAN configurations... Is there a smarter solution that can be used by people who need point-and-click instructions? I can edit my start-up scripts, but I know many people who can't...

I founded what it was ... During the network configuration with DrakNet, my Internet Provider's DNS servers were replaced by fancy one. Everything work fine now. [expert] ADSL Needed with PAP Scerets file
Hi: I have done a clean install of Mandrake 7.2 with a set of GPL disk to get around the problems that were done with a fresh install from the Powerpack box. However no matter what I do drakenet will not configure and set up my ADSL correctly. I have even tried using ADSL-Setup from the installed rp-pppoe rpm only to find that did not work. So I have updated to the rp-pppoe 2.2 rpm. But still no joy. I have found ppp-conf blank. I corrected this with a text editor copying a config file that was correctly edited back to it. Now I am not sure of the form my PAP Scerets file should take. I have two entries one from the KPPP connector that I am using to connect to the internet with using my 56 K modem. The other from ADSL Setup. Could some expert point me to the right one for use with ADSL. PAP Scerets file is listed below: # Secrets for authentication using PAP # clientserver secret IP addresses ELN/@@ ppp0 "##" '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' * '$$' * My Question which is correct for ADSL use? Hi ! i have problems with my adsl connection. I installed the two packages for it and configured it, but it don't work! :-( The pppoe starts a connection and i could see the DSLAM name and many more. ( a trace from pppoe) (I have also a debug of the pppoe) But i could not get a http connection. A PING to my DNS Server did'nt work too. Whats the problem ??? I would like to give thanks to those who offered suggestions as to necessary configuration/setup for DSL service under Linux-Mandrake, Civilme ,Vincent Danen Jean-Michelt Dault. Thank you for your advise and direction. I have found that initially to setup infospeed dsl service acount with bellatlantic.net as the service provider requires that you be running a version of Windows95,98,NT,or the MAC OS, I will need to dig up some install CD's and put Windows on my clients system in order to initiate the services with bellatlantic.net. Once that is accomplished it appears as though the setup In Linux should be quite easy, I hope any way. Thank's once again for the advise. I would also like to acknowledge the Great efforts of the Mandrake developers in providing a very nice version of 7.1 (Helium) I have installed it now on six different systems 2 of which were fresh installs and 4 that were upgrades, including my own system and all seems to be working very well.
