Re: [expert] vmware host-only networking and smb.conf
tail /var/log/messages, you probably need to setup a new interface and zone in shorewall. VMWare's SMB stuff is in a separate directory from Mandrake's and can run concurrently. [expert] vmware host-only networking and smb.conf
Hi, I think my problems with getting my home network set up under 9.1 look like they are related to setting up samba after enabling host-only networking with vmware. This time with 9.2 I set up the networking and it was working great (well almost) until I started fudging round with it trying to get vmware host-only networking going. Has anyone got this working? The idea is to get samba access to my home network and also have host-only networking going with my windoze guest in vmware. They say this is possible but one needs to go into smb.conf and play around. I went in and tried a few things but my conf file was considerably different to their example one and I don't really know what is absolutely necessary and what is not. If anyone has got this working, or has an alternate solution could they post their smb.conf file, or instructions to do otherwise? Cheers in advance and treats for you on this most Irish of holidays Anton Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Does anyone have any info on the VMWare and Win4Lin that is included with the boxed sets of 9.2? Specifically, are they functional demos, full function apps, etc.? Also, what about the licensing? Is it just the app that is included and a $399 license still needs to be purchased (at least for VMWare)? Just curious. Joeb Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [expert] VMware & Martian Source (solved?)
martian packets have source addresses that don't belong on the network they came from -- they're an indication of misconfiguration or mischief (e.g. spoofing). With VMWare in the mix, it probably means that you've enabled bridging, then forcibly set VMWare's bridged interface to a network address that doesn't belong on the network that VMware is bridging too. So don't do that :-) jack On Tue, 2003-10-07 at 12:35, Lawson, Jim wrote: > What is this I get this also who the heck is = martian source 192.168.0.1 > > -Original Message- > From: Fajar Priyanto [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Wednesday, October 08, 2003 2:28 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [expert] VMware & Martian Source (solved?) > > > -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- > Hash: SHA1 > > Ok guys, here's my info: > > Host: mdk91: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 > Guest OS: RH9: 192.168.0.100 > Guest OS: Win98: 192.168.0.99 > > Problem #1: Martian Source notice in host's syslog > mdk91 kernel: martian source 192.168.0.1 from 192.168.0.99, on dev eth0 > mdk91 kernel: martian source 192.168.0.1 from 192.168.0.100, on dev eth0 > > Problem #2: Pinging from guest: Destination unreachable > > Problem #3: I have to setup a static route from host to guests. I'm trying to use a USB scanner in VMWare, but it reports that Linux won't let it go: The specified device appears to be claimed by another driver (usbscanner) on the host operating system which means that the device may be in use. VMware Workstation cannot safely take control of the device until the host driver is unloaded. How do I get rid of the usbscanner driver, and is there a way to temporarily disable it? I tried your suggestion. It comes back with this instead The directory of kernel headers (version 2.4.21-0.13mdkcustom) does not match your running kernel (version 2.4.21-0.13mdksmp). Try to set extraversion tag to empty in /usr/src/linux/Makefile to make it match to original version of kernel sources. Chances are it will work then... (happened to me ;-)) By the way, I have MDK 8.2 so don't know how it is in 9.x, but Todd Lyons told me that thought it was going to be made 'easier' in MDK9.1: 1) Kernel modules are compiled against /usr/src/linux/include (provided by kernel-source-xxx.rpm) 2) Applications compile against /usr/include (provided by kernel-headers, that were the headers used to compile glibc) This seems to be common for all linuxes not only MDK. So if the first paragraph does not suits you, try to see if your glibc and kernel-headers versions are the same. Let's see what comes... I have a problem: sometimes the vmware machine when I plug in my ipaq doesn't respond quickly and the device mounts itshelf in the hardware list of mandrake as scanner (lol). After that vmware responds that the device is being used by system and cannot be locked for win98 virtual machine. the question is how to prevent this? how can I disable the mounting of ipaq in linux as scanner, or how do I unmount it simply? thanks in advance... [expert] vmware with secure kernel
Has anyone gotten vmware to compile modules for the secure kernel in 8.2/cooker yet? It's complaining that the source in /usr/src/linux/include is different from the running kernel (ie. 2.4.18-6.4mdk vs. 2.4.18-6.4mdksecure). So I try to build the modules manually, in /usr/lib/vmware/modules, as this worked well for me with 8.1 when it wasn't building properly, but now when I run vmware-config.pl it doesn't find any suitable drivers and I've tried saving them as up-2.4.18-6.4mdksecure-8.2, smp-*, and even secure-*, with the SMP option enabled in the properties file because it looks as though the secure kernels are built for SMP. On another note, is there a performance hit on a single CPU system running the secure kernel with SMP code enabled? -- MandrakeSoft Security; http://www.mandrakesecure.net/ "lynx -source http://www.freezer-burn.org/bios/vdanen.gpg | gpg --import" 1024D/FE6F2AFD 88D8 0D23 8D4B 3407 5BD7 66F9 2043 D0E5 FE6F 2AFD Current Linux kernel 2.4.18-6.4mdksecure uptime: 20 hours 11 minutes. msg53240/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

VMware and mdk8.2 have similar problems with RedHat 7.2 in that the modules do not 'appear' to be present. [expert] VMware
Has anyone had any problems with the latest VMware and Mandrake 8.0? No matter what I try I keep getting a Seg Fault. It appears to be associated with the vmnet-bridge. VMware instal says it has built a kernel module with no errors and it reports that it loads fine, however if I try to run the progrma I get the magic seg fault with no oter errors. Plus the initi scripts will no longer shut down the vmnet-bridge I have to issue a kill to get rid of it. Re: [expert] VMWare and INet sharing.
I have returned my system to its original statere-installed from scratch an restored from tape important config files. I have checked the iptables config and all appears OK. I can now connect from another machine on the network to the internet. The VMware Win98 machine can ping an external address, it can even telnet to an external IP, but it will not connect to an www address in explorer. I must be missing something, is it something to do with DNS/translation ??? Thanks in advance for any help. Re: [expert] VMWare and INet sharing.
Dave, Check and see if you have iptables installed on your computer. If you do the fix is fairly simple, just enable IP Masquerading(make sure ip forwarding is enabled first) with: iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -o eth0 -s 192.168.0.2 -d 0.0.0.0/0 -j MASQUERADE Obviously if you have a different external interface you would substitute that for eth0 in the above command line. As to the message you're finding in your logs, no, I don't believe that is your problem. Hopefully my little one-liner will help you on your way. If not let me know otherwise. [expert] VMWare and INet sharing.
Has anyone set up a VMware Win98 VM on Mandrake 8. I have Win98 running no problem, but I need Windows to share the internet connection with the host box. I have set up VMware with bridged networking, I have even installed the shared inet connection software disk that WInME creates to allow Win9x machine to share connections. Was this a good idea? I have set up the inet sharing feature of LM8. I have the following message in my syslog which gives a FAIL warning on system boot. ipvsadm: Are you sure that IP Virtual Server is supported by the kernel? Does this have anything to do with the problem? I am using the stock kernel as installed by LM8. The ipaddress is 192.168.0.1 of the host, Vmachine is 192.168.0.2, the gateway for the Vmachine is 192.168.0.1. DNS is disabled. Do I need to do more setting up of the LM config or this a Win problem? The wife still insists on using Windoze, so I would prefer her to use VMware as opposed to muti-booting. Thanks in advance. Dave.

Hallo! When you say Allow Acces to the hostfile systeme (in the vmware-config prog) , vmware configure samba automaticly, but be sure taht the normal samba service is disabeld! Hi, installed host os: Mandrake 8.0 installed vmware: eval version of Vmware Workstation Installation of vmware was easy as a pie, also the following installation of the guest os: WIndows98. The very last reason for Windows on my pc is gone now: I can access my digital camera through the special Windows-software running in vmware. So far so good. Now I set up the virtual kind of samba which comes with vmware. The help file says that the host system does not need samba installed. Everything will be configurated from vmware. I did that. Now, could someone point me to a howto or similar where I can read how to get my pictures from the virtual disk in vmware into my linux tree? This brought me to VMware's instructions, which include FULL AND DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS on how to configure a virtual machine for a raw disk. Here are the two sites. I already mentioned the second site last time, but the first site is the crucial one. I just discovered it. I am sure that you'll have no problem figuring everything out from the information provided. Even I understood most of it quite well. It's the technical implementation that I am afraid of. I don't want to make a stupid mistkae that will trash my newly installed Win98. 1) Using Raw Disks With VMware Workstation for Linux: http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/rawdisk_linux.html 2) Configuring Dual/Multiboot Systems to Run with VMware Workstation for Linux: http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/rawdevices_linux.html Benjamin -- Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net Benjamin and Anna Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [expert] VMware 2.4 release candidate
Hi Ian, I downloaded it and got it up yesterday on LM8 with no problems at all. I've used their prior versions and never had a problem that wasn't covered in their docs (excellent, btw). No support for my SBLive! in my guest OS but that's probably Creative's fault. I recommend VMWare highly. Performance was a little sluggish with KDE running at the same time. I switched to Windowmaker and it's great. Only issue with VMWare I'd warn you about is its voracious appetite for RAM- try to give your guest OS 200+ megs if possible. RAM's cheap though. Feel free to pass on any troubles you're having. Re: [expert] VMware 2.0 and Mandrake 8.0.
I tried both. But to not matter! I believe I have found the problem (at least a big part of it). Among the many reinstalls I did, I did a bare install with X and KDE and the such. It seemed to actually work then ( I did not install anything from the second CD except for the kernel source, at this was suggested on the list before). On of these fresh installs allowed both VMware gsx and VMware workstation to work! Even thought it was extremely slow, I started adding packaged one by one as needed. Well, I was recompiling a software, and it needed libsafe. As soon as I installed libsafe, vmware did the exact same crashing and hanging. Infact, many other programs, such as cksfv, also segmented! I feel SO much better now that I can run VMware and have applications not segment on me! > You mentioned that you installed vmware many times. Re: [expert] VMware 2.0 and Mandrake 8.0.
I realize this. However, my point is that it was working fine with 2.4.2 before me messing with 8.0. Now, vmware will segment out with 2.4.2 AND 2.4.3 with the 8.0 final. I know it is a VMware problem, but I just want to know what is going on. If I wanted just push the button and have things work w/o knowing why, I would use windows (chills as I say it). > > If you went to the VMware site you'd see that 2.4.x kernels are not > supported. Re: [expert] VMware 2.0 and Mandrake 8.0.
I was suspecting that. There is something up with my install? I mean, I can't even install vmware anymore, the program vmware either hangs or segments. I have tried many fresh installs to no avail. Other apps that ran before also segment, even after recompiling , even with kgcc. I just can't figure it out and it is driving me crazy! take a look at the version of VMware you are running. There are issues with some Unix guest OS that were not resolved in 2.0.2 that supposedly are in 2.0.3 and 2.0.2 comes with 7.2. There are also problems with XFree86 4 and it is not yet supported but works as long as you don't full screen it. I am have same problem. I cannot, for the life of me, install a new vmware machine because of the lilo problem. I have not tried grub or to see what exactly the problem is, since I just kept using the old ones. Oh yeh, the problem started when I got 8.0beta2 and was there for beta3. It sounds like you are using mdk as your host, and W2K as your guest OS inside of Vmare, inside of mdk. I have not used mdk v8 yet, but given your above remarks, something is wrong. VMWare does not start by using lilo at all. it is started, once it is installed in mdk, inside of VMware, from the command line in your personal dir. Lilo has nothing to do with Vmware, and is just used for your host OS, to get Linux and whatever other OS you use started. If you installed W2K inside of VMware as a guest, open VMware from the command line, then open W2K from within VMware. Also, I do not know if it works with the 2.4 kernel yet. I use it with 2.17 in mdk 7.2. -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Before you criticize someone walk a mile in his shoes. That way if he gets angry he'll be a mile away -- and barefoot.

I don't know if this is useful but was curious whether MandrakeSoft has any plans to include these drivers or maybe has already? To quote from the Com[pany Announcement: NOW YOU CAN USE XFREE86 4.0.2 IN A VIRTUAL MACHINE In response to customer requests, VMware has ported our XFree86 3.3.6 guest X server to XFree86 4.0.2. Hmmm ... I have VMware 2.0.3 running fine in 7.2, with sound working fine too (using a SoundBlaster Live! value) for an NT guest OS. I'm using XFree86 4.0.1 too and even my Intellimouse now works in VMware! (after I installed the silly Intellimouse driver that came with the mouse within the NT guest OS). The major problem I've had with VMware is it's ability to properly display PDF files in Acrobat reader. They show up as completely black. When I open a file in gvim, and edit it, the editing goes fine, until I do a :w command, at which point, the gvim window also becomes black. This must have something to do with XFree 4.0.1, since this behavior definitely didn't happen with XFree 3.3.x. One minor problem I've had is that the serial port within the NT guest OS only seems to communicate reliably at 9600 baud. Oh, I almost forgot, I have had a couple of programs crash VMware hard: Synopsys Design Compiler (during install), and Microchip's MPLAB (also during install).
