That's one of the most confusing things in Sanskrit pronunciation,
IMO.

>From Giitaa IV 33

shreyaan dravyamayaad *yajñaaj
jñaana-yajñaH*...

'yajñaaj jñaana...' is sandhi for 'yajñaat' + 'jñaana...'

In Sanskrit transliteration 'j' represents the
same sound as the same letter in English 'jam' [dzam].

Thus one would expect that 'yajñaaj jñaana... ' would
be pronounced somewhat like 'yadznyaadz dznyaana...'
But on the movement Giita tapes at least, in my ears,
they pronounce that sequence appoximately like
'yadnyaad dnyaana...' or ' yagnyaag gnyaana...'

Sez Michael Coulson about 'jñ':

jña: the pronunciation of this varies widely.
In some places, for instance, it is like *gya*,
in others *dnya*. [...] The point about *jñ* is
that it is a palatalisation so to speak /en bloc/ of an
original /gn/. Thus *jña* 'to know' is connected
with Latin /co-gno-scere/ and English 'know'.
[remember that 'g' as in 'get' is actually
the voiced counterpart of 'k' as in 'kit' -- card]
Perhaps the most appropriate of the modern
pronunciations to adopt is therefore *gnya*, which
(by adding y to gn) does crudely represent a
palatalisation.

A question -- was there ever, or often, a feeling of
"spaciness" involved for you after having performed
the puja this many times? By "spaciness" I mean a
feeling of not being grounded, perhaps of being
"not quite there." Not *unpleasant*, just sorta
spaced out?

If so, did you ever experience this same thing when
having yagyas performed?

Your metaphor here is why I'm asking these questions,
especially the use of the word "smoke."

For me, in retrospect, I do see a *qualitative* difference
between the kinds of experiences I used to have with the
puja or with pundits chanting in the few times I saw them
do so in Maharishi's presence, and other experiences that
I associate with being in the presence of samadhi or nirvana.

To some extent, this distinction is the same thing I was
talking about when we were talking a few days ago about
Maharishi's darshan. What I experienced in his presence
was very *qualitatively* different than what I've exper-
ienced around other teachers who, as far as I can tell,
never did anything to "give" darshan -- they just slipped
into samadhi and we in the audience felt what we felt.

Similarly, I associate my subjective experience of the
puja and of pundits chanting with experiences that I'd
have to categorize as being "astral" -- belonging to the
relative, even if it's a more refined aspect of the
relative than we're used to. As opposed to experiences
that I'd categorize more as transcendent -- having not
a whit of relative-ness about them...no attributes, no
qualities whatsoever, not even a *hint* of the relative
about them, totally absolute.

There is a subjective sense of "smoke" associated with
the "astral" experiences for me, and often, afterwards,
a sense of spaciness or ungroundedness. On the contrary,
after one of the "absolute" or "nirvana" experiences, my
subjective experience is of total clarity, not a bit of
spaciness, a higher degree of focus and being able to
focus than ever.

Given my predilections, I prefer the latter experience.

I'm just wondering whether any of this strikes a reson-
ance with you, and your experiences with the puja and/or
yagyas. Thanks in advance,

Unc

I don't know (or care) who "this person" is, but my impression would
be that separation of samsaric patterns from nirvanic ones could
easily perpetuate ignorance, as the body-knowing is that samsara is
nirvana, and nirvana is samsara.

Yes, thinking alone will not sustain awakening -- it is an
Understanding of the whole body-mind :-)

On the other hand, there are clearly many other valid understandings
embracing separation or distinction between nirvana and samsara, so
who am I to pontificate; Wholeness is truly indescribable (or is

I just received word from Yagna-by-Choice that my case was already
presented to the Pundits this morning. I feel like a teenager on a
first date or like a kid before Christmas or the way I felt on the way
to my initiation into TM at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton,
FL. It was on a Saturday so I assume I received Saturday's mantra.
Something very wonderful is going to happen, I feel.

I'm going back into silence and not being here until I receive word
when my first two planets will be addressed.

[FairfieldLife] Amazing rescue

2005-08-30 Thread authfriend
I just watched a film clip on CNN of the most
amazing rescue by a Coast Guard copter of a guy
stranded on his roof.

What was so amazing wasn't that it was suspensefully
touch-and-go, but that it wasn't--no struggle, no
sweat.

They lowered a Coast Guard guy on the end of a rope
to the man on the roof; the Coast Guard guy grabbed
the man, the helicopter hauled them up, and they
stepped into the open door of the copter as if they
were getting off an elevator.

It was so smooth and routine it took me a minute
to recognize I was actually seeing a rescue.
Nothing to it.

Skill in action.

Hey, the guy *needs* to believe it's true. Don't
disillusion him.

I mean, it isn't as if there's anything *else* to
be alarmed about where Bush is concerned...

[FairfieldLife] Guru Purnimah 2005 in Vlodrop

2005-08-30 Thread Rick Archer
Title: Guru Purnimah 2005 in Vlodrop

Another account:

Guru Purnimah Celebrations 2005

Dear Friends,

1400 fortunate people attended Maharishi's Guru Purnima Celebration this year in Meru, Holland. The event far exceeded anyone's expectations. It was as if Maharishi was offering the lives of everyone there to the lotus feet of Guru Dev. It felt and looked like Heaven on Earth. There were beautiful white tents everywhere, the kind used for Presidential inaugurations, decorated with red carpets, chandeliers, comfortable red velvet chairs, and banquet halls filled with a variety of dishes and desserts served by professional caterers.

Outside raised walkways were constructed between the tents, covered in green carpet and decorated with small flowering trees. In the central area a pond was created with flowers floating on the water. Children collected precious stones around the grounds and greeted you at the dining entrance with their colorful displays.

At around 3:30 or 4:00 each afternoon a variety of delicious Indian treats and snacks were distributed in all the tents. All the Rajas sat with His Majesty MahaRaj Nadar Raam, and the Prime Minister of the Global Country of World Peace, our dear President Dr. Bevan Morris, and other Ministers each day discussing the implementation of Maharishi's programs around the world. Maharishi frequently remarked how wonderful it was to sit and think globally with our world family.

During the Guru Purnima Day Maharishi instructed Bevan to tell people where we stand in time. The year is 1,955,855,107. Another perspective is Yudisthira of the Pandavas which is the year 5,143. In Shankara Samvatsar, time since Ati Shankaracharya established the four Mats, the Northern Mat - Jyotir Mat, the time counted from him is year 2,513. And then Maharishi Samvatsar is year 50.

It was during this day that Maharishi launched his Global Reconstruction Program and invited builders in every country to begin building Peace Colonies in every city composed of "fortune-creating" homes, and Peace Palaces, where Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and other Vedic-science-based programs will be taught to promote enlightenment for the individual and permanent peace for the world. Many of Europe's top builders came to the Rajas Tent to meet with the Rajas and His Excellency Dr. Eike Hartmann to commit their time and resources toward this project.

During this week's Global Press Conference, Bevan gave a beautiful summary of Maharishi's desires for the world that were laid out during the Guru Purnima celebration. He said that globally we want a grand unified world. This hope has come in the midst of Maharishi's analysis of the history of the world.

Government is based upon man-made laws instead of the laws that run the universe - the Constitution of the Universe. The result is a never-ending search for a better administration. The present system of government, democracy, has proven to be a divider of nations and a failure to provide solutions to the problems and suffering of society.

Yet when we speak to governments and show them using scientific evidence how that system is failing, they have deaf ears. Maharishi explains that these leaders have subjected themselves to drugs, alcohol, poisonous foods and medications. In addition, the buildings where they reside and work are damaging to their fortune, clarity of thought, and ability to understand.

Maharishi says it is like they are running into a fire and he is telling them don't do it, don't run into the gates of hell. But this is related to the destiny of the world -as you sow, so shall you reap. Maharishi has always done what ever he can to help change that. 50 years ago he started teaching the Transcendental Meditation program to the entire human race so that every adult and student can experience all possibilities in their own awareness. This experience alone awakens the total functioning of the brain.

>From our own experience as alumni, we know habituating our self to that unbounded ocean of consciousness, the field in which the whole universe is floating, creates the most powerful thinking. With more and more people learning Transcendental Meditation and the TM-Sidhi program the coherence in national consciousness will raise to a level where government leaders will begin to make better decisions.

Vaastu

But the other thing Maharishi is focusing on and he invites us to help is to reconstruct the world according to the principals of Vedic Architecture in harmony with Natural Law (www.GlobalReconstruction.org). Build everyone a lucky house, a house that promotes good fortune and will transform the lives of the people in these houses.

When a house is not built according to the proper cardinal directions aligned to true north, south, east, west, then wrong layout of a home offends the harmony of nature. When every day you offend the harmony of nature, you can't sooth it and you can't over come it. Natural Law is so powerful i

Venezuela to sell cut-price heating oil to U.S. poor
Aug 29 10:39 PM US/Eastern

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez said
on Monday his government plans to sell as much as 66,000 barrels per
day of heating fuel from its U.S. Citgo refinery to poor communities
in the United States.

The offer, made after populist Chavez held talks with U.S. civil
rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, would represent 10 percent of the
660,000 bpd of refined products processed by Citgo. The deals would
cut consumer costs by direct sales.

Venezuela's Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez said officials were still
working on the details on how the oil would be sold from Citgo, a unit
of the state oil firm PDVSA.

"We are going to direct as much as 10 percent of the production, that
means 66,000 barrels, without intermediaries, to poor communities,
hospitals, religious communities, schools," Chavez told reporters at a
press conference.

The world's No. 5 oil exporter, oil cartel OPEC member Venezuela is a
key supplier to the United States, providing about 15 percent of all
U.S. energy imports.

But relations between Caracas and Washington have become strained
since left-winger Chavez was elected in 1998 promising social reforms.

Chavez, a former army officer who survived a coup in 2002, frequently
accuses the U.S. of backing efforts to kill him or topple his
government. U.S. officials dismiss those charges but say Chavez has
become a threat to regional stability.

[FairfieldLife] Arizona Daily Star' Drops Ann Coulter's 'Shrill' Column

2005-08-30 Thread akasha_108
Off, what are those damn hard core Red states going to do next?

--

NEW YORK The Arizona Daily Star in Tucson has had enough of
conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

In a column announcing a wide range of changes in the paper's opinion
pages Monday, Editor and Publisher David Stoeffler revealed that the
paper was dropping Coulter's syndicated column.

"Many readers find her shrill, bombastic, and mean-spirited. And those
are the words used by readers who identified themselves as
conservatives," the recently appointed Stoeffler wrote.

One recent example of Coulter's controversial approach was in her Aug.
10 column. She wrote: "(T)he savages have declared war, and it's far
preferable to fight them in the streets of Baghdad than in the streets
of New York -- where the residents would immediately surrender."

Coulter's column is distributed weekly by Universal Press Syndicate.

Taking her place in the Star will be the Creators Syndicate column by
fellow conservative Tony Snow, host of "The Tony Snow Show" on Fox
News Radio and "Weekend Live With Tony Snow" on the Fox News Channel.
He has also worked for several newspapers.

Stoeffler's piece also mentioned other changes in the Star's opinion
pages, including smaller photos and cartoons to make room for longer
columns and more letters.

Stoeffler has been at the paper just nine weeks. He said the paper had
received about 300 e-mails on a recent re-design, and many were
negative. So the Star is shifting back to "more words" and a less
fancy design.

For one thing, the cartoons by David Fitzsimmons will now run smaller,
freeing up room for another columnist.

"Running a newspaper is something like building a three-legged stool,"
Stoeffler explained. "We need to understand and satisfy a broad
audience. Through a combination of market research and regular
contact, we come to know what readers want."

Erik Gable sent me his "Tale of Two Gurus" article as a text file. The last
two letters I posted, I typed. There's a scanner with OCR software I can use
at a business I sometimes work at in town, but I wasn't going there, so I
typed them. I sent my letter to Erik this morning. Here's how it ended up.
Apologies to any whose suggestions I didn't incorporate.

Intelligent, sensible meditators at MUM and around town (and there are many)
must have cringed when recent letters by Jon Kelly Kirkpatrick ("Respecting
Maharishi requires absolute belief") and Lawrence Topliffe ("Meditators
aren't deluded - nonbelievers are") were published. With spokesmen like
these, who needs critics? I'm afraid these fundamentalist rants exemplified
points I made in Erik Gable's earlier article (A Tale of Two Gurus). If I
could rephrase what I was quoted as saying, it would be to say that some in
the TM Movement have degenerated into a cult-like mentality, or have yet to
grow out of it. Every organization is comprised of a variety of people, and
I apologize for seeming to imply that this mentality characterizes the
entire TM movement.

There are people in every religious, spiritual, and political group who
believe that their particular teacher or perspective is superior to all
others. In some groups, this may be a subtle bias held by a minority. In
others, it is official doctrine.

Kirkpatrick's contention that Maharishi alone possesses "Total Knowledge"
misrepresented Maharishi's teaching, as I understand it. Maharishi never
described total knowledge as something that anyone may possess exclusively,
but rather as the experience and understanding of the most fundamental level
of nature's functioning – a universal, timeless reality that may be
discovered in the core of one's being, and that many people in different
cultures and traditions throughout history have experienced as a living
reality, often contemporaneously. Nor did Maharishi ever advocate belief,
either in himself or in anything he taught. For the most part, at least in
the earlier years of his teaching, he emphasized scientific and experiential
verification.

On that note, Topliffe's letter contained several examples of unscientific
exaggeration. For instance, there may have been some study in which TM was
shown to reduce occurrences of some illness by 90%, but on the whole, its
health benefits are much less dramatic, and it was disingenuous to imply
otherwise. Also, contrary to Topliffe's suggestion that yogic flyers really
are levitating, after nearly 30 years of practice, there are no documented
accounts in the TM movement of anyone actually floating in the air‑and yogic
flyers are well aware that this is the case.

Unsubstantiated beliefs are not a stable foundation for life, because they
constantly clash with reality. This leads to a defensive, "us vs. them"
mentality that is fundamental to all political, ethnic and religious strife.
According to the ancient Chinese text, the I Ching, "The healthy mind
challenges its own assumptions." Examining one's assumptions and beliefs and
revising or discarding them if necessary may not always be comfortable in
the short run, but it results in a harmonious, secure, and far richer life.

As Bertrand Russell put it, "What is wanted is not the will to believe, but
the wish to find out, which is the exact opposite." Do we know absolutely
that our beliefs are true, or do we hold them because our parents, our
culture, our politicians, or our spiritual leaders told us we should? It
might be liberating to step back and take a fresh look. So what if most of
our certainties become mysteries. Ironically, this makes one more secure –
not less – because one has less to defend. A childlike sense of wonder is
much more fascinating than dogmatism. And as Jesus said, it's a prerequisite
to entering the Kingdom of Heaven.

Erin’s from that area, so maybe they’re staying with relatives? They are not allowing people back in until Monday and 80% of the city is flooded.

I just heard from a friend living in the French Quarter and he was fine other than a skylight that blew out. The French Quarter is not flooded and the winds dried everything out!

Re: [FairfieldLife] Llundrub - Kirk

2005-08-30 Thread llundrub
Hi Guys, just checking in. My wife and I are OK. We're still in Vermont.
Erin's parents got out of New Orleans right from the start of the hurricane
warning, and so altogether, besides property damage, we're all ok. So I thank
you all for being concerned. It smacks of love and friendship, and so love and
friendship returned to you guys.

There's no human understanding which can usurp the machinations of Mother
Nature herself. Nor can one plan. At best, in this world one can maintain
health and love and kindness through difficulties, and if so then one is lucky.
I consider myself lucky and wish that same amazing luck upon you all as well
through whatever difficulties arise for you. So take care.

80% of NOLA is flooded and so we can't return home for a month. Perhaps in a
few weeks though I'll be in California at my sister's house and I'll have time
to come back and play there at FFLife.

Thanks again for your concern. Peace.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Arizona Daily Star' Drops Ann Coulter's 'Shrill' Column

2005-08-30 Thread shempmcgurk
Red states and Blue states are a source of confusion to me.

In Canada where I come from, the official colour of the Liberal
Party of Canada is red and the official colour of the Conservative
Party is blue.

Now, in the States, the more conservative party, the Republicans,
are "red" and the Democrats, the more liberal party, are "blue".

Dammit, it's even more frustrating than switching back and forth
from metric and imperial measurements...

Remember that the so-called "poverty rate" is a relative statistical
comparison measurement that has absolutely nothing to do with the
actual measurement of real poverty.

If there was such a measurement, real poverty would be somewhere
around zero in the United States.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Poverty Rate Rises 4th Year in a Row to 12.7 Percent

2005-08-30 Thread shempmcgurk
One accurate thing from this article:

It talks about the percentage of people without "health insurance",
not "health care": there are about 41 million people without health
insurance in the United States and, of course zero people without
health care in the United States.

Big difference.

Indeed, to his credit, this is something that even Michael Moore has
changed in his public declarations.

Actually, it is.

Aside from being silly propaganda schtick, it is the kind of
economic policies of wealth distribution promoted by Castro that has
done untold damage to the poor people of the world, NOT helped them.

Which for a single person (I am gussing you are single) is $8501
(well thats 1999 but inflation has been low since then so its in that
neighborhood).

So, you are living on less than $9000/year -- without dipping into
savings, without barter, without spending substantial amounts of time
growing your own food or building your own housing, (which should be
moneterized if we are comparing to employed persons at poverty level)?

Families of four making up to $40,000 or so don't pay taxes -- which
is way above the 17,000 family of four poverty level. A family of
four making $40k even 50k+ is not paying $23-33k intaxes. Your quip is
more than vaccuous.

Yes universal health care and free eductation has been the evil that
has caused untold damage to the people of the world --throughout
Canada, Europe, much of Asia. I am with you Shemp. This commie evil
plot of universal healthcare and free education needs to be stopped
NOW! I just wish Bush were not such a commie pussy for providing
prescription drug coverage for seniors, and spending OUR tax money on
education. Its a dangerours trend. Its a clear and present threat to
the Republic!

2005-08-30 Thread Jason Spock

Here is a Zen discourse by Era

From:  "Era" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>  Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2005 17:04:00 - Subject: [MillionPaths] Faith Mind bt Zen master Seng-Tsan

FAITH MIND by Seng-Tsan the 3rd Zen Patriarch

The Great Way is not difficultfor those who have no preferences

When love and hate are both absenteverything becomes clear and undisguised

Make the smallest distinction howeverand heaven and earth are set infinitely apart

If you wish to see the truththen hold no opinions for or against anything

To set-up what you like against whatyou dislike is the disease of the mind

When the deep meaning of things is not understood the mind's essential peace is disturbed to no avail

The Way is perfect like vast spacewhere nothing is lacking and nothing is in excess Indeed, it is due to our choosing to accept or reject that we do not see the true nature of things

Live neither in the entanglements of outer things nor in the inner feelings of emptiness

Be serene in the Oneness of things and such erroneous views will disappear by themselves

When you try to stop activity to acheive passivity your very effort fills you with activity

As long as you remain in one extreme or the other you will never know Oneness

Those who do not live in the single Wayfail in both activity and passivity, assertion and denial

To deny the reality of things is to miss their reality; to assert the emptiness of things is to miss their reality

The more you talk and think about itthe further astray you wander from the truth

Stop talking and thinking and there is nothing you will not be able to know

To return to the root is to find the meaningbut to pursue appearance is to miss the source

At the moment of inner enlightenmentthere is a going beyond appearance and emptiness

The changes that appear to occur in the empty world we call real only because of our ignorance

Do not search for the truthonly cease to cherish opinions

Do not remain in a dualistic stateavoid such pursuits carefully

If there is even a trace of this and that, of right and wrong, the Mind-essence will be lost in confusion

Although all dualities come from the Onedo not be attached even to the One

When the mind exists undisturbed in the Waynothing in the world can offend

And when things can no longer offendit ceases to exist in the old way

When no discriminating thoughts arisethe old mind ceases to exist

When thought objects vanish, the thinking subject vanishes
as when the mind vanishes, objects vanish
Things are objects because of the subject (mind) the mind (subject) is such because of things (object)

Understand the relativity of these twoand the basic reality: the unity of emptiness

In this Emptiness the two are indistinguishableand each contains in itself the whole world

If you do not discriminate between coarse and fine you will not be tempted to prejudice and opinion

To live in the Great Way is neither easy nor difficult

But those with limited views are fearful and irresolute

The faster they hurry, the slower they goand clinging (attachment) cannot be limited

Even to be attached to the idea of enlightenment is to go astray

Just let things be in their own wayand there will be neither coming nor going

Obey the nature of things (your own nature)and you will walk freely and undisturbed

When thought is in bondage the truth is hiddenfor everything is murky and unclear

And the burdensome practise of judgingbrings annoyance and weariness

What benefit can be derivedfrom distinctions and separations?

If you wish to move in the One Way,do not dislike even the world of senses and ideas Indeed, to accept them fullyis identical with true Enlightenment

The wise man strives to no goalsbut the foolish man fetters himself

There is one Dharma, not many;distinctions arise from the clinging needs of the ignorant

To seek Mind with the (discriminating) mindis the greatest of all mistakes

Rest and unrest derive from passion, with enlightenment there is no liking or disliking

All dualities come from ignorant inferencethey are like dreams or flowers in the airFoolish to try to grasp them

Gain and loss, right and wrong, such thoughts must finally be abolished at onceIf the eye never sleeps all dreams will naturally cease

If the mind makes no discriminationsthe ten thousand things are as they are - of single essence

To understand the mystery of this One essence
is to be released fro

Agreed, but what about sex, drugs, and rock and roll?

Dunno about welfare system (but it sucks here in Tucson, trust me),
but a lot of American citizens work for minimum wage jobs here in
Southern Arizona. The illegals are working for less-than minimum wage
here.

Tucson may be an overgrown hick town, but the valley has well over 1

There's slow flooding taking place due to a failed levee or levees
and the fact the pumps aren't working.

Castro has his own problems, not the least of which is a long-term
paranoia about an invasion. For some reason, he thinks the US
military is out to get him...

ALL taxes are a form of "wealth distribution." Are you saying that we
should have a zero percent tax on everything?

Well, as Jim Morrison said, sometime after the Lizard King period in
the desert, sometime before the Miami "nothing to hide incident, on
stage",

"I spent some time in the Universal Mind. I was feeling fine."

And as Mike Love sang .. . "we'll have Fun, Fun, Fun till her daddy
takes the T-bird away."

(This actually is an allusion to Purusha swallowing the phoenix of
maya, stretched out on the mystic T (cross) of illusion.)

[FairfieldLife] Maharishi Vedic Pickled Herring Program™ for immortality

2005-08-30 Thread shempmcgurk
World's Oldest Person Dies in Netherlands
Aug 30 11:56 AM US/Eastern

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands

A woman listed as the world's oldest person died Tuesday at age 115,
according to the director of the home for the elderly where she
lived.

Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper died peacefully in her sleep, according
to the home's director, Johan Beijering.

"She was very clear mentally right up to the end, but the physical
ailments were increasing," Beijering said. "She said, 'It's been
nice, but the man upstairs says it's time to go.'"

Known as "Henny," she lived in Hoogeveen since World War II, moving
to the Westerkim elderly home when she was 106.

A fan of the soccer club Ajax, she was born in 1890 and celebrated
her 115th birthday on June 29. Her status as "oldest person" was
recognized by Guinness Book of World Records last year.

She advised others who wanted a long life to "keep breathing" and
eat pickled herring, a favorite Dutch snack.

She had no children or immediate family and her husband, Dick van
Andel, died of cancer in 1959. Beijering said her closest living
relative was a nephew who lives in Spain.

"She wanted me to tell everybody that she enjoyed the attention, the
friends, and the good care she had," Beijering said "She felt that
being the oldest person in the world for more than a year was long
enough."

Sorry, didn't mean to give the impression I am currently at that
level but, yes, I have been quite comfortably below the so-called
poverty level at times in my life.

I didn't mean to give the impression I'm at that level now although
I have been under the poverty level in the past and have lived quite

I misunderstood your comment about donating...I thought it was a
reference to redistribution of income.

Of course a family of 4 making about $40,000 doesn't may 23-33k in
taxes.

gouging Louisiana evacuees. They were charging 199.00 a night per room. The

"Zero percent tax on everything"...are you referring to a VAT?
Because we have very limited VAT in the U.S. today (usually imposed
on the local or state levels and on limited goods and services)...

Great movie about the tensions and relationships between East

Gee, I guess the way to help the people in this film clip is to do the
kinds of things that akasha's friends Fidel and Chavez are
doing...cause we all know they are the real friends of the poor of the
world and their form of wealth distribution has been proven to be so
helpful to the poor and downtrodden of the world...

good misrepresentation.

Actually I am a free market oriented social libertarian sort of guy.
I just don't see the huge sins that Chavez has done. He stood up oil
companies wanting terms chavez felt were not in his countries best
interests. He has promoted education and health in his country with
oil profits. He has tried to break down social barriers to
advancement. he's probably done some dumb things too.

The only thing I have said about castro, via satire of your comments,
is that his support of free education, and of universal health care
does not seem so out of line with western mainstream thinking. I am
not at all a fan of other things that he has done, but education and
health is one area that I have heard he has done relatively well.

As well they should. I have been alternately incensed and amused by
the so called illegal alien issue for years. (these days, amused...)

Here we are in the U.S., loudly proclaiming capitalism to be our
economic system of choice, i.e. cheaper production with higher prices,
equals bigger profits. And just across our border, we have millions of
people willing to come here and work very cheaply (equals bigger
profits).

So the trumpeting against 'illegal aliens' is really just a sham by
the Republicans, and the Democrats too, though the Republicans and
their backers really, really like the cheap labor...

This game has been going on for years. Like many politically unpopular
services to the rich, the defacto encouragement for illegal aliens
cannot possibly be stated openly to, and accepted by, the majority of
voters, so the president and those in power keep assuring us that they
are 'tackling the problem', while letting increasing numbers of
illegal aliens in.

After all, the burden is not borne by the rich. It is the middle class
whose taxes go up, and whose services are compromised.

'Illegal aliens', my foot. If there was the political will to stop
them, it would happen tomorrow.

"Relatively well" refers to comparision with Castro's other
initiatives. I was under the impression that his health and education
policies, while perhaps deficient in an absolute sense, were better,
more effective than his other programs.

Cuba ranks 55th in life expectance out of 226 countries. Given
statistical error, its about a dead heat with the US at 48th. Of
course the US is beaten by counties such as Greece, Spain, Puerto
Rico, Hong Kong, and Malta. So you seem be indicating that While you
feel Cuba has failed in its health policies, so than has the US.
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/rankorder/2102rank.html

You imply that, relativly speaking, other of his programs were more
effective (since in relative terms his health and eductation programs
arelowratedcomparedtohis other programs). That would imply that some
of his other programs are as effective or more so than those in the
US. What programs were these?

In terms of literacy, out of 67 rankings (many more countries -- due
to lots of ties) Cuba is tied for 7th place (94%), compared to the US
at 4th place at 97%. Of course the US is bested by Poland, Russia,
Jamacia, Hungary, and Tonga. So we probably have a lot to learn from
those coutries.

It appears that you feel the 3% difference between the US and Cuba
representsa dismal failure of Cuba. I wouldn't be so harsh. They did
better than Mexico, Greece and Hong Kong.

Two issues:

1) Education; and

2) Health care.

We can immediately do away with education. In the totalitarian
regime that Castro's communist dictatorshi oversees, there is no
freedom of expression, thought, or press. This extends to the
universities and schools. Therefore, we can all agree that without
that very basic freedom, education -- no matter how many PhD's or
doctors Cuba puts out -- is on the very lowest levels.

Health care. Your life expectancy figures are skewered for one very
important reason: abortion is used as a means of contraception in
Cuba and is very frequently used. This will greatly increase life
expectancy amongst those that get to be born.

As for health care, up until the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba got
about $10 billion a year in aid from the USSR. This artificial
boost to the economy (used as propaganda in the western hemisphere)
was used to aid areas that Cuba couldn't by itself tend to, such as
health care. Once the USSR stopped its subsidies, Cuba experienced
a dramatic fall in health care and basic nutritional levels (Castro,
of course, continued to eat like the multi-billionaire he is).

Ironically, it was the allowing of U.S. dollars to flow to Cubans by
their U.S. relatives AND the opening up of limited capitalism (much
of it tourism) that saved Castro's butt.

The point in contention is the effectiveness of Cuba's health and
education programs. I have substantiated that, and countered your
empty claims, with facts. most of all, I beleive in a rational,
fact-based approach to policy.

With regards to Chavez, I believe in the sovergnty ofother countries.
I dn't believe the US has a right to intervene if we disagree with
their social policies. You perhaps do. If so that would makes you more
in the imperialist camp -- a position I strongly disagree with.

But in post after post, you bad mouth Chavez, without actually stating
any examples of the policies of his that you disagree with. Hopefully
from the perspective of his country -- why he is wrongisdoing what he
thinks is good for his country. Name 5. I doubt you are aware of
such, that your objections are just empty rhetoric. But I would love
to have you prove me wrong and have you provide some actual substance
 into this rapidly ending diologue.
