Re: [Finale] so helpful!
I hadn't noticed it was back online. Thanks, Raymond! - For those who may be interested, I compiled a free stand-alone hyphenator HTML page you can run on your local machine to provide Latin Mass text hyphenation. (You have to allow javascript). You can manually add your own hyph definitions for words it doesn't recognize by directly modifying the html starting at line 7591 in a text processor like Notepad. Just remember to save the file as html when you're done, of course. Write me (not the Finale listserve) to have it emailed to you. AFAIK, no packaged Latin hyphenator like this is offered anywhere anymore, although the js hook itself is still online. Re: [Finale] orch score part naming
Hi, David et al- another workaround for this... but if you work with consistent sizes between large and small font sizes for multiple scores, this saves time. After you've left the current score and moved on to other ones needing the same treatment you're set up to do so easily. 1. Put in the expressions once for the full score. Complete all formatting, or not. 2. Save an expressions library, say "fullsize". 3. Returning to the score, edit the expressions which require smaller sizes, but DON'T save the score/expression changes to the score. 4. Re-save the expressions library again, this time renaming it, say "smallsize." You now have two libraries you can exchange right before doing your final page formatting/spacing, etc. In David's case he could load in the first library and complete the full score, and then load in the second library and format the parts. He could then SAVE the second set of score changes as a stand-alone parts file so that he doesn't lose his full score formatting or have to switch libraries back in case there are other changes pending in the full score. This has worked for me in a few cases where I was required to complete parts first while decisions about the full score were pending. Hope this helps someone -Cecil Rigby Liberty (Clemson), SC - From: David Froom Last question about this: do you (or does anyone) know if it is possible yet to have tempo marks in different sizes in score and parts? John, you can edit staff line thickness (Documents --> Program Options) to get better visibility. Staff line default (I think) is 0.00781 and ledger lines are twice as thick, so you could choose a size in between, say .0117. the 1st and second vlns in the preceeding measure are in quasi-unison. The ottave bassa would, I think, just be an indication to continue that. Re: [Finale] Crediting the copyist
I stipulate doing so as part of many contracts, putting info in small type on the bottom of the first page of the full score AND parts, if any business name and email address - I will also add a date if the piece is having its premiere. A symphony's librarian contacted me after seeing the info on a score I did for them a few years back and hired me to replace lost parts (different piece) for an upcoming performance. Many instrumentalists have given me business as a result of seeing the info on parts- those usually turn out to be new compositions, which I especially love doing when I'm also asked to put on my editing hat. -Cecil Rigby rig...@att.net - Original Message - From: "dhbailey" To: Sent: Tuesday, March 30, 2010 6:49 AM Subject: Re: [Finale] Crediting the copyist Rich Caldwell wrote: The composer of a piece I'm currently working on said I should put my name on the last page of the score to credit myself as the engraver. Re: [Finale] polyphonic keyboard notation
I just had a look at Heussenstamm (Norton, an old '87 edition!) just about the time you think there's a rule he gives an "acceptable" use that defeats logic, in my opinion. what I see generally, are these 'rules,' and they are spread out over a couple of different chapters: 1-when the interval of a second occurs between the two parts, the stems are aligned 2- if the parts cross, the stem of the higher pitch (even if it belongs to the lower part) is written on the left side, and the noteheads shouldn't touch each other 3- questions about unisons: are the note black or white? are there dots in either part? are the notes flagged or beamed? a- if the notes have the same rhythmic values they share noteheads (double stemming) b- whole notes are written twice c- undotted black notes may share the same notehead even if the note values are different d- if one black notehead is dotted and the other isn't, the dotted note is traditionally placed to the right of the undotted note (also consider acceptable to use double stemming even when one of the notes is dotted) e- separate noteheads should be used when half notes are combined with dotted half notes and the dotted note should be on the right (when both notes are dotted but of different values the shorter value notehead goes on the right) f- double stemming isn't acceptable for white notes when one of them is dotted g- it seems to be a rule of context that when there's a "moving line of notes" against a a steady rhythmic background (chordal or not), then the noteheads of the less mobile line go on the right. EX: 6 quarter notes in a voice moving againt two dotted halves? the halves go on the right 4- it may be preferable to change the clef of a staff temporarily to make things more readable -Cecil - Original Message - From: "dc" To: ; Sent: Friday, February 26, 2010 7:58 AM Subject: Re: [Finale] polyphonic keyboard notation dhbailey écrit: You've just proven my point -- there is no universally agreed on basis to choose which note gets moved, thus the difference in the two printed editions you cite. The Lutheran Service Book (most recent version for LCMS) frequently sets five verses between the staves. However, there's a bit of space between verses 3 & 4, which makes scansion to the proper line of succeeding staves easier. I would definitely set the verses 3 & 3 if two pages are required when the voice parts and/or harmony changes. For six or more verses I would set 4 in the music and put 2 underneath. However, if I'm only acting as engraver and the client has asked that all verses go between the music I would gently make my suggestions and do whatever the client ultimately decides. -Cecil Rigby - Original Message - Subject: [Finale] maximum verses between staves in hymns I'm setting a hymn with 6 verses. Re: [Finale] Rehearsal measure numbers
Hi Andrew- Well, I use Fin09, but it seems this functionality should be the same for you, even if the dialog boxes may be a little different . I've done what you describe with the measure tool before (had both measure numbers and rehearsal lettering). Simply right-click the tool and choose edit measure number region. Set up (Add) a new region that encompasses however much of the piece you want to cover (all is easiest: e.g. 1-998) Then in the drop down options for style choose the lettering you want. On the right hand side of the dx you can set the enclosure shape, and even EDIT it, if you like. Make sure Always show on top staff is checked Set other options as you need (how often to appear, etc). You can always change all that as you would the appearance or disappearance of a regular measure number, of course. You might also make a list of the measure numbers and letters associated with them so if you want to make parts with multimeasure rests included you can go back and split measures as needed so that the rehearsal letters appear. I know I can do this as an expression, but I like clicking on a measure (with the measure tool) and having the correct measure number show up. Here's what I go through (I'm working on a string quartet): 1. Opt-shift a measure: inserts measure numbers on all staves (though oddly, only the top one is enclosed) 2. Select handles of the lower three numbers, then a. Double-click handle to assign enclosure b. Right-click to Unlink in All Parts c. Right-click to Show/Hide Based on Region Using expressions -- create one once, then duplicate and edit actual measure numbers -- is much simpler. But is there an even simpler way? Re: [Finale] L.V.
Hi Stig- The guitarist should play the melody in its notated rhythm, but letting each note continue sounding past its notated length. It's identical to engaging the sustain pedal on a piano and then playing a melody- all the notes override each other until the pedal is released, dampening the strings. Usually one will find a sign that looks similar to a coda sign (an oval with crosshairs) at the end of such passages, and that means the player should resume playing with normal technique. LV comes from the French, laissez vibrez. The technique is impossible to achieve on guitar for consecutive notes played on a single string, obviously, so the player has to distribute successive notes among other strings to achieve the effect. As Terry said, the fingers must be left in position on the strings after each note is played. When the number of strings or fingers runs out to keep that practice sustained over the course of the melody or indication it's logical (to me), knowing the intended effect, that the first note played would be the first dropped to play the next one before any other notes were dropped. -Cecil RIgby LIberty, SC From: Terry Muska I believe the intention of "L.V." is to leave the left hand fingers in position ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

[Finale] bad timestamp
After retrieving more than 50 old Fin files from several Mac disks for a friend I finally ran into one instance of a file with a timestamp (reported by WinZip) of 9/2/1956. It was supposed to be a Fin 97 file (!). Obviously there's some corruption in there. I can't copy or move the file (using MacDrive), but I can rename the file. Still it won't open as a text file, etc. I get weird errors like "cyclic redundancy check", "80070001: incorrect function," etc., in various programs. But I'm able to get into the file with SourceEdit, and the bottom section of the file is badly garbled. So it looks like I really have 2 problems with the file: bad timestamp, and a file that didn't save properly. The floppy itself isn't bad- I was able to get surrounding files on it to copy. Is there a way to use this hex editor or a similar program to copy header info (assuming that's where the timestamp problem is maybe not?) from a good Fin97 file to this one to see if I can get it to open? Which sectors are the ones I need? Or am I just hoping for the impossible? thanks- Cecil Rigby Liberty, SC ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

What I do (FINWin) is enter all lyrics and assign them normally then go back to such passages, and in page view, using the "Type into score" menu item for Lyric tool, I enter an alt-0160 at the first rest needing a word extension. Then I switch to the "Edit word extensions" menu item and, clicking on the rest, drag the extension rightward first, then use adjust syllables tool to move it leftward as needed. Even it this requires a few steps, is still easier than making/placing/spacing smartshape lines. Re: [Finale] what does a copyist do?
This thread reminds me of that movie (wasn't it about Beethoven?) in which the female copyist rewrites something and the composer rants about it. --- If copying is all that's really wanted then that's all I do (but it's really boring for me even if I am getting paid). In my experience it's really easy to lose future work from a client if I offer unsolicited criticism the first time I work for them. Some people get highly offended at the slightest intimation that something might be done differently, no matter how good the reason for making the suggestion. For example, I copied a piece for a composition student last year that had violin playing several notes below its range. I knew this was going to draw criticism from the comp professor and so brought it to the young lady's attention. She promptly fired me and accused me of trying to derail her career. But when there's an opportunity I do enjoy helping a composer find the best way to communicate their ideas to musicians. I'm currently working on a symphony that's full of wrong or missing accidentals (especially in transposing instrument parts), and the composer said he expects me to find and correct such errors. That's in the job description as copyist for me. But the score also has a couple of passages that are just clumsy, strained, and a real obstacle to the musical ideas in general. Have I commented on those things? Yep- but only because we've developed a very good relationship over time. In this case I was asked to cross the line into editing responsibilities, but the composer will always have the last say, whether the result is good or not. Another piece I worked on last year contained an organ part that could only be played on a four-manual instrument because of registration needs. While it was playable and would sound great just the way it was written, I pointed out that few (U.S.) non-church venues have a four-manual organ. The result was that the composer redistributed some notes to other instruments. Nothing musical was lost and the piece now has a chance of being played anywhere there's a two-manual instrument. The composer was grateful for the insight. Was that generally within my interests as a copyist? I don't think so. Others might. I just felt free to offer a practical suggestion based on the kind of relationship we developed as we worked together. Of the composers I know personally those are best that can admit they don't know everything (neither do I, of course!). Humility, though, seems a foreign commodity among some, and unfortunately I find myself disliking some otherwise really good music simply because of the composer's overblown ego. In those cases I still do my best copying work, but keep my editing mouth shut. Then I get pompous and tell myself "that could earn a Pulitzer if they'd only listen to me." :)heehee- talk about ego! What really irks me are conductors who presume to rewrite music after it's been thoroughly edited, copied, re-edited and published. 1. poor composer. 2. overblown egos. -Cecil Rigby rigrax at earthlink.net - Original Message - Part of the message from: shirling & neueweise "From a copyist, composers generally [expect] their score to be copied exactly as they gave it, no more and no less." [snip] i know there are copyists that also feel this way, but i've always felt that the copyist's most important role is to improve the performers' relation with the music.. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Re: [Finale] Binding options
Hi Darcy- I'm sure you know this perfect-bound books don't lie flat on the music rack very well. "Breaking the back" on them to make them lie flat will make them fall apart more quickly. They're made mostly for occasional use (quality paperbacks in the bookstore, for example), or for (relatively) cheap archiving. Your client's not going to be very happy if the book is to be used very frequently- it will start coming apart within a few months with regular use, and they'll think it's your fault. Maybe these are some of the reasons you're leaning toward coil binding. Around here printers who are capable of perfect binding charge a setup fee. The highest fee I've encountered was $150, and the lowest, $90 ( & I'll wager that NY-area prices are higher). Some printers are variable in cost to the number of pages, and others have a flat fee. Inquire about the type of glue they use- some get brittle quicker than others over time. Better glues cost more, but they last longer because they have a higher rubber content. Stapling's an option with the thickness you're producing, but middle pages will tend to tear out. These books do lie flatter, and they're cheaper than perfect-bound. Of course, you have to take creep into account since these are folded sheets. And the book will look much better printed to a slightly larger size with a finishing trim (adding to the cost). You could go with saddle-stitched, but normally that's reserved for hardback bindings, and it's pretty expensive- too costly for a short run of 30 copies. This binding will require gluing the stitched booklet groups together and adding a glued cardboard cover. Normally these have stamped lettering, but you could opt to glue a print on the front. One option you might have that could save some money, being in a large metro area, is to see whether you can get a university librarian to send your work to the bindery they use for theses. You'd get saddle-stitched copies back, probably. Like a perfect-bound copy, this won't lie flat very well. It's just meant to be more durable. You're sensible to suggest coil binding - your client should listen to you.. unless these copies are intended as gifts or library-quality prints. ? If so, perfect-bound may be more sensible. You just pass the costs on. Re: [Finale] Piano notation question
The simplest solution IMO, if the sixteenth note triplet is notated in proper rhythm in the measure right before the downbeat, is to add a pedal down marking at the start of the triplet that ends after the downbeat note (or wherever you want the sound to end). It wouldn't hurt to add a slur from the first of the triplet to the downbeat. Together these markings should be sufficient. (The same could be done even if the triplet were grace notes. The point is that a pedal marking means these notes are to be sustained without you having to write them out in proper rhythmic notation using ties, etc.) Cecil Rigby [EMAIL PROTECTED] [snip] I'd like to notate a rolled chord with the rhythms of the roll specified - happens to be a 16th note triplet before the barline landing on the 4th note of the chord on the db with all notes held. I believe that feature was added in Fin04, and because I'm such a long-time (nigh-20-year) user, I often forget about it. But specifying clef changes by region is a great way to put them in. Finale automatically removes redundant clef changes or inserts 1 or more midmeasure clefs as needed to match your selection. It's a great feature and I should remember to use it more often. Mine acts consistently, and doesn't wipe out subsequent clef changes. (I'm use 2006d) But here's a weirdity... try this and see what kind of behavior you get doubleclick where you want the midmeasure change choose the new clef in the measure region box choose the first radio (measure x to measure x) only after the above click the "create a movable midmeasure clef" for me this has the effect of limiting the change to this measure only, inserting a returning courtesy clef Cecil Rigby [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Finale] Mid-measure clefs Hmm, I may have spoke too soon. In my last post I should've stated that one normally can't select that checkbox in the measure range section if you've already selected the midmeasure clef option. I see no reason for that behavior! Re: [Finale] TAN: transposing standards downward
Mark wanted to know. But I'm honestly not sure what you mean by "singing something outside their range". Do you mean a singer whose comfortable vocal range is X picks a song that lies Y and she attempts to sing it anyway and therefore sounds like crap because she's really an X? Or do you mean a singer whose range is X but rather than finding a song that was written for X instead picks a song that was originally written as Y and transposes it down to X so that she can sing it? ---I did mean the former... Re: [Finale] TAN: transposing standards downward
Hi Mark et al- Some of the remedies you ask about will work better in some pieces than others, of course, so take what happened in my case with that in mind. For a recent wedding I had to transpose the pop song, "Time to say goodbye," for a male soloist down to C from a-flat. In that key the piano part was, as you pointed out could happen, unmanageable. Had it not been a paying job I would've just let it be. I found, during first rehearsal, that *my* problems with lots of ledger lines and reading in bass clef were solved by playing *up* to the key, rather than down, but also found this overpowered the already-too-quiet singer most of the time. Also, the singer couldn't hear the actual notes he wanted to sing and flopped all over between high and low registers- a real disaster. So the main problem from a musical point of view was the sound rather than my having to read low notes. (But I did score most everything in bass clef because it made for fewer upper ledger lines than the other way around.) -- not to mention that this piece was meant as a duet and would've worked much better with the thinner accompaniment as one-- The only real solution for this particular piece was to drop most every bass note that was below great C- otherwise the thing would've been very muddy sounding- all those overtones with nowhere to go but against each other- yuk! Any thirds I retained were always more than an octave from their roots. Only in places where there was no singing could I afford to take the liberty of playing up an octave, and I only did it then for some variety and repose from all those low notes. Adding to the overall problem is the slow tempo of the piece that gave low notes that much more time to sound and concatenate. All the music had to be simplified- very few full chords- I kept the accompaniment as thin as possible. And *much* less pedaling!! Revoicing in this case meant just leaving lots of notes out. Pushing them up an octave was too distracting to the singer- and the right hand was supposed to play octaves in many places- how does one revoice those?! I have found if a piece is to be transposed more than a third or fourth up or down then something major usually has to be done to the accompaniment- changes for some pieces are less drastic than for others- again, it depends on the piece. - Since Mark admits to not being a purist the following comments are not intended for him personally--- WHY do people insist on singing something outside their range in auditions? !&^#! I'd much rather hear, and can much better judge, a singer who sings in their range as well as they can. And I admit wanting to hear them do standards as much as possible- otherwise it's comparing apples and oranges between singers vying for the same seat. Four altos who audition with music meant for an alto are more likely to get a fair judging than four who sing pieces outside their ranges, I think. What gets me on this was the mention of musical theatre pieces. Most musical theatre composers have a song in a particular range *for a reason.* Can you imagine an alto trying to pull off Gilbert & Sullivan's "The sun whose rays," from Mikado? All the fine, airy quality written into the music would be turned instantly into smog! Someone tell me how can that music help an alto in an audition situation? To keep this a bit more on topic- I have at times run the check ranges plugin to help identify weak areas in voicing. It's nice that one can set the upper and lower limits to suit.... Here's hoping the first part was helpful, at least- Cecil Rigby rigrax at earthlink.net - Original Message - From: Mark D Lew To: Finale-List 3 Sent: Monday, February 12, 2007 4:05 AM Subject: [Finale] TAN: transposing standards downward This isn't a specific question so much as my general interest in others' experience with the same phenomenon. I work with singers a lot, and from time to time I'm asked to type up a transposed copy of a song that the singer wants to sing in a different key, for an audition, recital or whatever. In theory, my task is to just copy the original exactly as is, then let Finale magically change it to another key and we're good to go. But sometimes it's not that simple. Very often, the song is one from the early musical theater era -- say, Rodgers & Hammerstein or thereabouts -- and the singer is a belty mezzo. The style in those days was to write women singers higher than most women are used to singing today, and even the lower songs are generally in the middle soprano range. Since the belty mezzo is happiest from about G to G on either side of middle C, she typically wants the song transposed down a third or even a fourth. This feels perfectly natural to her, since that'

[Finale] TIFF from Finale [was: Re: TAN: Lulu.com]
Kim, Generating graphics of entire pages can be done within the graphics tool in Finale, and tiff is one of the options given for file type. After the save routine one can open the tiff in a photo program and print it to pdf by choosing a program like PDF995 as the print driver. That doesn't resolve the issue of combining all those single pdf's into a single file, tho, for Andrew. BTW, Andrew, except for some semantic details, you were right when you wrote "I had thought that PDF text was a self-standing graphical image of whatever file it was derived from. Isn't that the whole point of the thing?" A PDF doesn't rely on "outside" fonts. It does rely on the person creating it to embed the needed fonts *correctly* so the fonts' graphic designs and frequency of use can be described in the file's code properly. :) -Cecil Rigby [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Kim Patrick Clow To: finale@shsu.edu Sent: Thursday, January 04, 2007 3:36 PM Subject: Re: [Finale] TAN: Lulu.com On 1/4/07, Andrew Stiller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > So how do I go about converting a 40-page Finale file into TIFFs? >And what's the difference betw. a "flat TIFF" and a round one? Re: [Finale] OT trouble sending pdf files
Hi Chuck- it sounds to me like his service provider hasn't set an association for the .pdf extension on their servers. Your friend should contact the ISP and ask them to do so. When an attachment's extension type isn't on a server's association list it will just assign whatever the provider sets as a default. Or, your friend could always try changing the name of the file so that it ends in .pdf instead of .mime- sometimes that's all that needs to be done on the receiver's end. Hope this helps- ( I may be a little fuzzy on the details, but I had this happen to me several months back and this was the solution in my case. ) Cecil Rigby [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Chuck Israels Subject: [Finale] OT trouble sending pdf files [snip] I don't know why I am sending one thing and he is receiving another.
