Thanks JB. Checking all measures does it for the barlines. However, the staff name "piano" still appears to the left of SOME systems. Here's a question I've been meaning to ask for years and never have. I'm working with MacFin2011. On piano parts, some grand staves have barlines reaching through the staves (treble and bass) the way I want them to, but other systems, later on in the part have barlines only on EACH staff. What is the remedy for that? In Staff Tool/Groups I have designated I want barlines THROUGH both staves. Also, so systems have have "Piano" out to the left. In Staff Tool/Groups I have designated No Name, also, in the Staff dialog, I have no name. All the best, KIM R ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

[Finale] ADDING STAVE after formatting parts
How do we add a stave after having formatting all the existing parts. Example: I have an orchestra score, with parts generated and formatted. Then I discover I need to add a second keyboard part. So I add it to the score and fill it in. When I go to manage parts (or edit parts), it does not appear in the parts list. So I need to generate a part. When I hit Generate Parts, it wipes out (after warning me) all the formatting on all of the existing parts. There must be some way around that debacle (and waste of HOURS of work). He wants two different PARTS to have different measure number settings. I think the easiest way to achieve this is to extract the one part with different number settings (the vocal part) and change them once extracted. You won't have the part linked any more, but that isn't as much of a pain in the neck as I expected it to be on the occasions I've done it. An alternative is to set up two different regions, then number one of them to start at measure 999 while you print the other parts, then switch it to start at measure 1 and the OTHER region at measure 999 while you print the vocal part. You will have to remember to make that change every time you print parts, though. That's why I think the extracted part is a better solution. I think I remember jef chippewa coming up with this scheme before we had separate layout for score and parts. Kim, I think another solution to your problem (which is probably that measure numbers collide with the lyrics, right?) is just to have the normal linked part, then in page view in the vocal part, select the measure tool, hit command-A to select all (which will select the measure numbers) then drag them to above the staff all at once. You might have to do this once for each page, but it is very easy to do and prevents measure number collisions. Just make sure they are close enough to the staff that the singer associates them with the proper measure, NOT the measure above! Christopher On Fri Apr 15, at FridayApr 15 3:41 AM, Michael Mathew wrote: I think that works through the measure number dialogue box: one set of numbers and positions for the score and another for the linked parts. This is on a Mac with Fin2004. It is a two-page vocal and piano part. When he went to print it, all he got from the printer was two blank pages. He tried previewing it before he printed, also making a PDF. All he could see was two blank pages, although his regular file included everything he had imputed. Anybody know why this happened? [Finale] DISK space
I am having a disk space issue. It might not be a Finale issue, but I think it is. I recently updated from MacFin2007 to 2008. I installed the program along with the Garriton Sounds that came along with it. Before this I had 50 GB hard drive space available. After installation I had 24 GB available. I worked on a piece last night for about 2 hours. I leave my computer on at night. When I got up this morning my computer said the disk was full. I thought I had saved the new piece last night, but when I tried to quit it this morning, it wouldn't SAVE, saying there was not enough disk space. So I lost the 2 hours of work. Now my disk says it has only 3 GB of free space. Is this a Finale issue? I can't think of any other reason. Is this a Garriton issue. If the answer is YES to the last question, can I install the Garriton stuff on an external hard drive and have it work with the program on my native hard disk? [Finale] Northwoods Jazz Camp (Kim Richmond/Clay Jenkins camp)
Dear Finale Listers, I have received some interest in this from some of you on this list in the past, and I have contacted those individually, but I thought I would send another message about this year's event to the List in general. Please excuse the duplicates. I am hoping you will join us for the Northwoods Jazz Camp this year. As you know, this is a 4-day camp for adults (21 and above) at the northern Wisconsin Holiday Acres Resort. I think you would get a lot out of it, and the hang with the professional musician staff is always fun for the students. The dates are the evening of Wednesday, May 14 through the night of Saturday, May 17. The new feature this year is that we will have a big band made up of students AND faculty which will play part of the concert on Saturday night. The faculty is Clay Jenkins (trumpet), Scott Whitfield (trombone), Tom Hynes (guitar), Lee Tomboulian (piano), Jeff Campbell (bass), Tim Davis (drums), Betty Tomboulian (vocals), and myself (saxophones). If you want to join us, I urge you to enroll now. I am attaching the camp flyer (PDF) (this probably won't transmit on a group e-mail list) and I suggest you check out the website. [Finale] RE: Goodbye Finale
For a couple of years I too have had a foot in both camps. It was VERY hard for me to learn Sibelius, since in many ways it works oppositely from Finale (Speedy Note entry is one example), so I didn't find anything intuitive about it. But I just wanted to add to the List members comments about this subject. In my opinion, one of the biggest assets of Sibelius is Daniel Spreadbury, the Sibelius tech who is available to answer, on the Sib List, any question that needs answering. This guy is not only brilliant, knowledgeable, and above all tolerant, but he is consistently on the money with solutions. If there's something that cannot be answered right away, he asked the user to attach the file to e-mail and send it. Then either he answers, or he sends it on to the support team. Having said all that, there are a few things that are favorites of mine that Sib won't do (double bars at the beginning of a system is one example, and the Explode--they call it Arrange-- feature not working like Finale's used to--does it work correctly again?). Meanwhile, I'm keeping feet in both camps. My 2 cents. All the best, KIM R ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

All the best, Kim, This is at least the 3rd time I have answered this for you, and I answered it earlier today for another list member. Could you print it up, or write it down somewhere? This is what you have to do. First, REMOVE optimisation from the score if you want to optimise the score, and remove it from the linked parts if you want to optimise the parts, if you have ever applied optimisation. Don't worry, you can put it back afterwards. This means go to the score and remove optimisation. Then go to the piano part and remove optimisation. If you only want to optimise the part and don't care about the score, only remove it from the part, and vice-versa. Second, set the Group Attributes for the Piano in the score to ALLOW optimisation. Do the same in the linked part, as you can have optimisation differently for groups in the score and groups in the parts. If you don't care about the score or part, then leave it alone. Third, apply optimisation where you want it. That means, if you want it in the part, apply it in the part. If you want it in the score, apply it in the score. If you want it both places, apply it both places. If you do any of these steps out of order, the whole procedure will NOT work, and you will have to start over. Remember, you can't change the group attributes on an optimised system (even if the program appears to let you do it), and parts and score can be set differently from each other. If something doesn't work after this, it is possible that the file is corrupted somehow, but I have never seen it in this form. Or you can go to Document Options | Multimeasure Rests and check Update Automatically. Then as you add music, MM rests in the part should break themselves as needed. I think the downside to this is that Finale actually recalculates each MM rest when you switch to the part, and you will lose any manual edits. For example, if you have adjusted the endpoint of an MM rest to avoid a clef change, you will lose that edit. It appears this 2007 version has a LOT of problems. [Finale] MULTIMEASURE catastrophe
OK, here's another shortcoming for MacFin2007c, and this one almost completely sabotaged my rehearsal of my orchestra today. It's a good thing is wasn't a recording session. In going to tweak Linked Parts after placing all entries in the score, I discovered that some measures were left out with a group of number (like below an expanse of multimeasure rests) underneath one measure of music. I quickly learned that that meant there were measures filled with music not showing on the part. The solution was, on each part, with the Measure Tool selected, choose Create Multimeasure Rests. That reveals the hidden music. But it has to be done on every part. Doing it when viewing the score doesn't do it. Unfortunately, I hadn't done that with all 22 parts, and there was a lot of missing music in the parts today. It appears this 2007 version has a LOT of problems. The top voice is D (middle of treble staff) up to high C, down to Bb. The low voice is A (under the D), up to G, down to F. She has basically been studying Finale with me this past semester. She has Finale 2007 and last week we finally got to the Linked Parts, me having no experience with that new feature of Finale. Well, we got the first part and made the format changes necessary. Now, the question is: How do you model all the other parts after the first? It must be in Manage Parts under the Format menu, but we couldn't come up with the effective answer, even after referring to the online Help section. Can you give me some help here? [Finale] COPYING chord symbols
Sorry, I haven't been monitoring this List carefully, so this might have been previously covered. A colleague of mine just installed MacFin2007 and used it for a project. He discovered, to his dismay, that copying (option-click), from location to another, entries that included chord changes, was disastrous. It changed the symbols extremely and made that function unusable. He called MM and got an admission that it was a bug. Does everybody else know this? This REALLY needs to be fixed. I don't intend to buy the 2007 update until things like this are addressed. All the best, KIM R ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Is there a COPYING problem in 2007?
I'm sure this has been covered, or at least mentioned, recently, so excuse me for asking this. Is there a wrinkle in the copying process in Fin2007? Can we longer highlight the bar we want copied, then option-shift-click the target area? If so, is there a combination to replace it? Do we now drag everything (or copy and paste)? I don't have 2007 yet, but one of my students has it and the option- shift-click combination doesn't work on her Mac. [Finale] Re: Chord symbol transposition bug still not fixed in Finale 2006
Yes, Darcy, I asked for this along time ago too, but I was under the impression that Finale never wanted to fix it. The "workaround" which I was told to use (which I guess they don't consider a workaround) is to highlight the area in the transposed part, under Mass Mover Tool, Mass Edit menu, Change/Chord Assignments/Transpose. That's what I've had to remember to do ever since. All the best,KIM ROn Aug 3, 2005, at 8:34 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Date: Wed, 3 Aug 2005 15:00:05 -0400 From: Darcy James Argue <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Finale] Chord symbol transposition bug still not fixed in Finale 2006 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: finale@shsu.edu Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Hello, I'm writing to say how incredibly disappointed I am that a major bug involving chord symbols attached to staves set to Chromatic Transposition has still not been corrected in Finale 2006. There are many serious problems with Finale's implementation of chord symbols, but this is by far the most harmful one. It has been a problem since chromatic (i.e., non-key sig) transposition was introduced for staves (back in Finale 97, I think?). I have asked every year that this be fixed -- and it ought to be a simple fix. Sibelius has handled this situation correctly since (at least) Sib 2.0. So -- here are the steps to reproduce the bug: 1) Using the Setup Wizard (or manually), create a Finale file including any transposing instrument -- like, for example, a Trumpet in Bb. [It doesn't matter which transposing instrument you choose, but for now, let's use a Trumpet in Bb.] 2) Set the score to Display in Concert Pitch. 3) Enter some notes. 4) Enter some chord symbols. 5) Turn off Display in Concert Pitch. Notice that both the notes and the chord symbols transpose up a step. This is correct. 6) Now, using the Staff Tool, double-click the staff. This launches the Staff Attributes dialog box. Click the "Select" box next to "Transposition." Change the transposition method from Key Signature to Chromatic. 7) Notice what happened. The _notes_ are still transposed correctly (up a step from concert pitch), but the _chord symbols_ are no longer transposed. They display --incorrectly -- in concert pitch, and must be manually transposed to match the music. This is a serious bug that has needlessly ruined many reading sessions and performances -- including a premiere of one of my works earlier this year out in LA. I was unable to attend personally and made the mistake of not insisting on preparing the parts myself. The LA copyist they used was obviously unaware of this bug, and when extracting parts from my Score in C, left the chord symbols in the tenor sax part untransposed, with disastrous results. Please, please, please, please, please, I'm begging you guys, fix this. *Please.* Every year another upgrade comes out with this bug uncorrected, it breaks my heart. [Finale] Re: Sibelius compared to Finale
Dear members of both Lists, I am a LONG time user of Finale. I'm coming to the quick (maybe too hasty, after learning/using Sibelius for only a few weeks?) conclusion, that while it's a wonderful program able to get quick quality results, it does not have the flexibility that Finale has. That is indicated by at least a couple of (what I consider) important details. 1) I'm finding that Sibelius cannot provide me with double bars at the beginning of a system (reflecting a double bar at the end of the previous system). 2) I'm finding that Sibelius cannot provide me with broken slurs over eighth-note tuplets, which I find quite desirable for easy reading. The brackets look clunky over 8ths, although I do want them over quarters and longer values. Those are two issues I found right away. Another issue is that I cannot find anything in Sibelius equivalent to Finale's Special Part Extraction, where, after extracting parts, a score can reflect changes made in those parts. I understand, however, that Sibelius v.4 is going to remedy that with score/parts linking. Ok, I have to chime here about Karen's reply. The very brief reference she made to herself as being a computer consultant has been MOST important to me. Folks, Karen is someone who regularly saves my "life" computer-wise. In my opinion, she is a qualified expert in almost all things Macintosh, especially Finale. I have employed her on a regular basis for a full year now, and she is a dream come true, for not only me but my wife as well. When I was in a hopeless tangle on my fronts, she literally saved me. Here's another ongoing problem I've never been able to solve: For the last several versions of Finale I've frequently had this scenerio. I want to drag music from one staff onto the next. It drags OK, but when I lay it on top of the other staff, the outline never becomes BOLD and it will not copy. I can do it successfully from a bar that does not have a double bar on its left (like the 2nd bar).
