This message is from: "Curtis Pierce" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > "shawna smith" wrote: Also I'm wondering-Can a forelock be to long??? I'm > keeping it braided loosely so he can see. Any suggestion's appreciated. I have had two horses with especially long and wide forelock. In both cases, the horses preferred to have their eyes covered. In one case, we had braided the forelock for a dressage show. He wasn't a fjord, so I had to braid the mane, and when I braid the mane, I usually braid the forelock. During the first test, the judge noticed that he seemed to be looking at the middle of his head and not where we were going. So after the test, we let down the forelock. During the second test he was much happier and did real well in the test. We have also found that the longest hairs in the forelock come from the place where a lot of people put the bridle path, just behind the poll. By the way, you can see pictures of our horse, Solvar, with a long forelock at our website: http://www.deepcreekfjords.com/solvar.html. He definitely likes his forelock long! Enjoy your Fjords! Curt Pierce Bristow, VA Our Fjords got another 6 inches of snow to play in, but some have started to shed already.

Re: Fjord fencing
This message is from: "Jean Gayle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I can tell you one thing about fencing. A fjord is an opportunist and if there is any way they can get theirs head through to the grass beyond, you will have a damaged fence. Gunnar stuck his head through my wood small gate and lifted his head with the gate around his neck. Off he went at fifty miles an hour with the dreadful creature around his neck about to get him. When he reached the far fence he had already figured out he just had to lower his head and shake the monster off. After which the imp then spied the open space where the gate used to be and came like a freight train, ducked under the hot wire and immediately started feeding on the lawn. When I left the window and came out the door he sped back under the wire and looked quite innocent. The small gate is now anchored. They have dirt aisles too. My daughter tells me that all of the horses at this barn have dealt with it at one time or another and when they get a booboo, the dreaded scabs appear. I'd dealt with rainrot years ago, my first introduction to it, poor horse. Numerous things done with the advice of others who had been through it, none of their methods worked, the clorox, the powder for fungus on plants. When all was said and done, we had to get the hair off, and bathe with a medicated soap. He ended up on antibiotics as he got a secondary infection, swelling in the lower legs. He got this rainrot when we moved him from our place to a boarding facility. The vet told me that flies can carry the bacteria from horse to horse and that horses who had never had it before can come down with a bad case of it, hadn't built up an immunity to it. He never did get it again but he did get a bad case of scratches when we moved to Colorado and had our first heavy snow, another first for this horse. Debby

Re: rainrot
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] "...After reading all this info about rainrot, are fjords easily susceptable to this?" Nope, no more than any other horse, in my opinion -- maybe even less. I saw the most spots of rainrot on my Paint gelding. My Fjords and Annie, our Belgian, only get a few spots here and there, usually in the late winter and early spring or after a long, warm rainy spell. Thanks, Steve, for your information that rainrot is caused by bacteria. I stand corrected! Since rainrot is not caused by a fungus, I suspect my observation that athlete's foot preparation has "cured" rainrot is mainly due to the drying effect of the powder, and not to the medicinal properties of the product. Missing Digests/Messages
This message is from: Steve McIlree <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I often get inquiries both on the List and privately about missing copies of the List. I always check to see if the message has been "bounced" for some legitimate reason, and more often than not find there has been none. I then suggest to the person inquiring that they contact their ISP, as there is nothing I can do about the problem, which is probably a result of over-zealous SPAM suppression. Here is a quote from a computer industry journal that I hope will state the situation better than I can. "...false-positives are an unfortunate consequence of the blacklisting practice used by ISPs. A false-positive happens when a legitimate e-mail is falsely classified as spam and thus denied safe passage through the Internet. Anecdotal research suggests that false-positives number in the millions per year, if not the tens of millions. The e-mail that I've received from Internet users at large and small businesses indicates that the false-positive phenomenon isn't reserved for the lunatic fringe. Individuals and organizations from all walks of life report that their e-mail is disappearing into the ether. More often than not, end users are left with limited, if any, recourse to fix the broken link in their e-mail chain-- if they can even find it." I hope this helps explain where your missing Lists are going. -- Steve McIlree -- Pferd & Skipper -- Omaha, NE/Las Cruces, NM, USA A canter is the cure for every evil. --Benjamin Disraeli(1804-1881)
