Hi Julia, any spark will broadcast a "signal" through the air. The first telegraph/radio/amateur radio transmitters were simply a spark producing unit. I am sure you have heard the snap of lightning in your AM car radio, or the snap of an electric fence when you drove past a field. You will only hear the snap on the AM radio frequencies as FM is broadcast in a different way. I have a Sony FM/AM walkman headset. It has a vertical antenna for FM but...this is important...the AM antenna is built into the headband. Not to get too technical (I'm a ham operator) the headband acts like a loop antenna and can be used for direction finding. When I exactly face the radio station (or sparking short in the fence) the signal/volume is at a minimum. If I hear a snap in my headphones (while listening to talk radio) I go to the center of the field, or ranch area...tune the AM radio to the lowest frequency where there is NO commercial broadcast radio station...I>E 540Khz. Then, slowly turning my body until the snap volume is at a minimum. That gives a close directional indication where the short is. The short MUST be fixed ASAP as the kids won't drink out of my Nelsons until they will no longer get a mild zap... Clear as mud??? It will work to find ANY sparking Fred Important FjordHorse List Links: Subscription Management: http://tinyurl.com/5msa7e FH-L Archives: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw FH_L Shirts: http://tinyurl.com/8yky94l
Earthquake update
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> All is well at Pack's Peak. When the quake hit, I thought they were blasting at the quarry next to us. The peacocks started raising a racket and the Fjords started racing in circles. Lois called me on the radio and SCREAMED for me to stay where I was. I DID NOT notice that we were having an earthquake. I became concerned about the horses and why Lois had said what she did. Then, and only then did I feel the ground moving beneath my feet.laterallyabout 2 to 3 inches. No rolling nor bucking, just moving gently side to side in an even motion and oscillation. I actually laughed at Lois' hysteria over what I though was a small quake. I rode out the 8.7 quake in Manila on the 9th floor of the hotel. That quake threw the room's refrigerator out through the plate glass doors onto the balcony of the room. In the next two days, there were over 50 aftershocks of 7 or better. It was the only time that I was more than happy to leave Manila. None of our animals were injured. We had no damage to any structures, nor our 400 foot well. Just 1/2 mile away, the stone (sandstone) arch entry to the small city below (Wilkeson) was torn apart and destroyed, causing a road closurein and out of Wilkeson. This has since been cleared and only one pillar of the arch remains. Our location probably helped us avoid damage, as we are on a solid rock ridge above the city. We had to drill through 400 feet of solid rock before we found water for our well. A few things were moved around in the house, and a few things got tipped over by the quakebut nothing broken. The only thing damaged was Lois' composure. The Fjords went right back to doing what they do best.eating. Thanks to all for your concern for those of us in the area. RE: reformating, mind games
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mary, Someone wrote on this list, some time ago, that he/she stopped the problem by refusing to approach the horse until it stopped. One of my girls (mares) had a habit of banging on the gate until she was fed, WHEN SHE SAW ME COMING with the food. I tried the suggestion and stopped in front of the gate (on the outside) until the horse stopped and withdrew. It only took a couple of times.voila...no more banging. She KNOWS I will stop and not feed her if she does. Fred Pack Pack's Peak Stables (just a kid of 29) (inside) Ha, ha, ha!! Like grandma, like grandson!! Line puts her foot through the two bottom panels of her metal panel gate EVERY morning and bangs away demanding her breakfast! Same thing at dinner time! At least she waits until she hears the back door - or until someone turns on the barn lights - before she starts. But she doesn't quit until the food is in the feedbox! It annoys me no end, but there is just no easy way to break her of it and she never actually gets her foot caught - she's way to cagey for that - so I just 'grin and bear it'. Some things/behaviors are worth changing, others are not. If she's out in a pen with no metal gate to bang, she just paws and swishes impatiently until the food arrives. I thought maybe this behavior would stop now that she's the only horse - and it did for a brief while - but now she's back at it the same as before. Two new arrivals
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> We would like to announce the arrival of two new additions to our stable: Silly Willie Filly (we call her S'Willie) and Pepper from Knutsen Fjord Farms. Pepper (Pebermynt, I think) and Willie (Velhemine, again not sure of the spelling...the papers are in the house and my computer is out in my office), are progeny of our Susie (C-48) and half sisters. Pepper is a beautiful, well mannered 2 year old, and Willie is one of God's most beautiful creatures. Both are.magnificent. I was going to buy JUST Willie, but Willie refused to travel alone. We got only a mile from Knutsen's when it became apparent that Willie was stressing outbadly. We reversed course to return Willie to Knutsen's and thought to ship her commercially. Willie had never been alone before. It played out like a plot had been hatched between my wife and Peg K. They swear it isn't so, but I sensed a vast left wing conspiracy. I'd been had. Must be like potato chips. You can't always buy (eat) JUST one. SO..we bought her buddy (and half sister), Pepper (and darn glad we did.she is beautiful alsoand BIG) and traveled home safely. They promptly made themselves right at home, investigating all the hillshaving been raised on the flat. Up and downround and round Such fun to watch.beauty in motion. Are we happy here? YOU BET! This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mike May wrote: Like "MoonWise" wrote, Pyr's don't have to be trained to do their job. It comes naturally. That's the beauty of the breed. We sent out first Pyr to obedience training. She came home and trained US. Our 2nd and 3rd Pyrs would obey all the commands that the "trained" dog will do. It is just natural in the dog. The third Pyr (it was number 2 that we lost) was a rescue Pyr. A rescue group found her in the pound at Salem, Oregon. She had been abandoned by her owner. One sweet lady brought her as far as Portland, and another brought her up to Olympia, WA. We went to Olympia to be "interviewed" for suitability. It was love at first sight. I sat down on the floor and the sweet Pyr came right to me and laid her head in my lap...that was it. I was accepted. BTW, our Pyrs are royalty up here. Empress and The Contessa.and they rule the roost. I can NOT recommend them highly enough to a person who has room AND a job for them. It is NOT a dog that can be confined to a small yard or apartment. To do so is only asking for trouble. Our fences are electrified, not only on top for the horses, but 6" from the ground to keep the Pyrs in, and other critters that would dig under the fenceOUT. Pyrs are roamers. They want to guard any livestock within 2 miles. Woe unto the possum that tries to sneak in. Our girls leave the dead ones as presents on our front porch. Also, to Jean Gayle, the Pyrs will NOT exercise your Corgi or Fjord. They will just lay around during the day with 1/2 an eye open looking for trouble. Although a white dog, they are most often dirt colored, love to KILL rocks (dig them up and carry them around). A Pyr seldom needs brushing, they take care of their coat themselves. I mentioned that Pyrs are dirt colored, it should be added that-that is only outside. When they want to come in, they miraculously become clean. RE: not Fjord related.. Pamela
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi all, Just had to add my two cents We have two Great Pyrenees bitches (had three, but lost one this spring due to a brain tumor). They are the greatest, most friendly, laid back, wonderful dogs that a person could belong to. Our two girls sleep most of the day, but during the nightthey constantly patrol the property. We have, among other critters, ducks and chickens loose. We have never lost one to anything that walks or crawls. We have lost some chicks to crows and hawks. Our girls leave us presents occasionally. A dead possum on the front porch that tried to sneak in etc. However, if barking keeps you (or your neighbors) awake at night, you don't want a Pyr. They are constantly warning predators away from their territory, calling to each other from opposite sides of the ranch. We have learned their "upset/danger" bark. When one lets out that bark, the other makes a b-line to assist. Ours come when called (mostly) and heel/follow/etc. on command. They are the most loyal dog breed that we have ever been involved with. Woe be to the intruder on or property, whether they have four legsor two. These dogs have an outstanding sense of human character. A new meter man/woman can come on the property and the Pyr's will love them to deathBUT if they decide that the intruder is up to no goodtake the person down, and sit on them until I come. The last person that found out the hard way was an ex workman of ours who decided to show up when we weren't home and help himself to some of out stuff. Even though the dogs knew this person, when they decided that he was up to no good, they took him downand waited for me to come home. I came home to find the ex-workman flat on the ground with one of the girls sitting on his belly. A "almost stolen" radio was on the ground beside him. We left him that way until the police arrived. We've never had a problem since. I guess the "word" got around. I rely on their judgement too. If they immediately don't like someone, it has always turned out that that person was not to be trusted. Sorry folks, I guess I spent more than two cents here. Fred and Lois Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, WA USA >[T]he Pyrenees are supposed to be wonderful guard dogs. For those of you that want to save the pictures to your computer, I found a way to get to the high resolution pictures at the PhotoPoint site. When you click on the thumbnail (tiny) picture, you then get a larger view of the same pictureTHEN click on the larger picture and you get a full screen, high resolution picture. Save this one to disk/computer. You can send the digital image file (i.e. mvc-726s.jpg) to any photo processing company to get prints on your own...now...or at a future date, or to view on your own at a future time. The high resolution pictures at PhotoPoint are EXACTLY the same as my masters here. Call me at (360) 829-2766 call if you have special needs or need more help that can't be done in a message. Hope this helps somebody, Fred Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, WA USA
Libby video
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Beth, from Starfire farms wrote: Amen to that. Sandy North taped for hours and missed most of the show to provide that video. We owe her a vote of thanks for doing so. I intend to purchase the video, even though I have my own. I offered copies of my video as a private person, not representing the PNFPG. My video was made for the use of my trainers, to show them what events etc. are shown, and how. A copy of my video was offered to Sandy (in VHS) to include, but she wants a Hi-8 digital copy. I can not find an inexpensive place that will make another master copy. So I have offered my video to those that might want another perspective of the show. These I can do on my own equipment, without having to send anything out to be done by a commercial outfit. The last thing I want to do is step on someone's toes. The still photographs provided at PhotoPoint, for viewing/downloading/printing was done because I wanted to give something back to the group, AND it didn't cost me anything to do soexcept my time. I can not provide copies of my video at my own expense. Fred Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, WA USA
Come on folks. I need some assistance.
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear list members, I'm trying to caption the Libby show pictures but I can't recognize everybody. Unfortunately, only a few. The ones that I've been able to caption have been where numbers are visible in the picture, OR someone has e-mailed me which picture is which. If YOU want YOUR picture captionedyou gotta let me know. I need the person showing, the horse name, and the farm name. Please post me privately, rather that clutter up the list... at [EMAIL PROTECTED] OR [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you can't remember how to get to the photos, go to http://www.photopoint.com and in the "Visit Albums" box, enter [EMAIL PROTECTED] This will take you to all the albums. RE: Want some prints of the Libby show?
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Jean, this is NOT one of those free web sites. They offer you some free prints to join in the hopes that you will order more in the future. ImageStation at Sony has made some high quality stuff for meat a reasonable price. On the site is a check box as to whether or not you want to receive e-mail from them OR not wish to share your address with other vendors linked to Sony. I get no Spam stuff from Sony or affiliates. Fred Fred regarding all of these "free" websites, don't you pick up advertising? Want some prints of the Libby show?
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> If you want some prints of the Libby show.for free Here's How... Go to one of my albums of the Libby show, click on the picture you want to get the full size image on your screen. Windows users, right click on the picture and a Save As box pops up. Save the picture to your computer. MAC users will have to save to desktopBUT be sure it is NOT saved as a .dat filebut a .jpg file. go to http://www.imagestation.com/ and click on the box "Join Imagestation and get 50 free prints". Join, then upload the pictures that you saved to disk to the site. The pictures that I shot were in low resolution, so the maximum size for prints should be a 4x6. Voila, you get free prints. I have had an account with Sony for some time and they do good work. Got some ball caps and coffee mugs with Fjords on them and some good prints made. Prints MAY be ordered from PhotoPoint while viewing the albums. Check the pictures desired and click on the ClipBoard icon on the left side of the screen, then follow directions. 4x6 prints are $.49 each. I do NOT sell prints myself. All the photographs in Libby Series 1-4 are YOURS for the downloading/printing. I have NOT used PhotoPoint to make prints. I used them because they would accept my big files (so far). If PhotoPoint limits my uploads, I will shift the pictures to imagestation at Sony. Making my still pictures available is my way of saying thanks to some very good peoplehowever I will have to charge $25 for the video. Fred

This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi folks, In photographing the Libby show, I tried to photograph the entry sheet on the bulletin board. The pictures did not turn out well enough to make out the entries. I have made a VHS master of my Libby video (from Hi-8 digital). It turned out excellent, even without editing anything.I am trying to find someone who can master my Hi-8 to another Hi-8 so I can give it to Sandy North to add the show tape. Got some darn good video, albeit a lot of chatter in the background sound from spectators and the radios that I had tuned to the ring steward etcas well as calls from my wife. You'll have to put up with it.it adds to the flavor of the show. You'll know who won before it was announced on the PA system. We want to express to great appreciation to the good people we met there. Kudos' to all those that took the time to come and show their horses. This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear Gail, Lois' and my hearts go out to you. Damn, but it hurts when something like this happens. Makes you love your remaining animals just a little bit more. God only puts them in our charge for a little while. Someone else wrote this. I am including it here. Don't cry for the horses that life has set free. A million white horses forever to be. Don't cry for the horses now in God's hand. As they dance and they prance in a heavenly band. They were ours as a gift, but never to keep. As they close their eyes forever to sleep. Their spirits unbound. On silver wings they fly. A million white horses against the blue sky. Look up into heaven, you'll see them above. The horses we lost, the horses we loved. Manes and tails flowing they gallop through time. They were never yours - they were never mine. Don't cry for the horses. They'll be back someday. When our time is gone, they will show us the way. Do you hear that soft nicker? Close to your ear? Don't cry for the horses. RE: My first fjord
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi, and welcome Storme: I learned a trick from Dennis Johnson, owner of Springhill Fjords (who we just visited and brought home two weanling fillies and a yearling filly). He uses a "Cake Breaker" such as what is used to cut a chiffon cake to hold up the mane while trimming. This is the same thing that Black Americans use on their hair. You will often see one sticking out of their back pocket. By using the tool to hold up the mane to the desired height, you can use electric trimmers (parallel to the tines) to get an even trim. Just like a barber uses his clippers alongside a comb. As for the shape of the mane, I will leave that to the experts..I am still learning how to do it properly also. I might suggest that you check the available photographs at members web sites. Fred Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, WA USA This message is from: Storme Lee <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> My question is...how do I trim my Fjords mane? It is the most beautiful sight on the planet when I go to the pasture and he comes running up to me. I want to do it properly. The person that I bought him from did it herself and she was by no means a master at it gauging from the pictures that I have seen. Of course I have never seen another Fjord in person. Any hints and suggestions would be wonderful. Any books or articles? thank you. Storme (one who is truly in love with her Fjord)
Craig, Reiner saddle
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Had anyone had any experience with this saddle? I need a second saddle, less expensive than my Ortho-Flex, for a second saddle. Something lighter weight that I can let a friend ride with me and use on our Fjords during training. Foal Scours
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Folks, Many, many thanks to all who responded privately, and on the list. We think we have the problem solved, then the "squirts" begin again. It seems that it is an every other day happening. The mare's food has been cut down to reduce the richness of the milk and grain for both mother and daughter is now strictly CornOatsBarley (COB for our non-American friends). I don't think the problem will be solved until we wean the baby. She will be four months old on the 29th of May. We will wean her then, get the cotton for our ears (to muffle the "screams") and turn on the "White Noise" generator. Ever seen a baby nurse THROUGH a fence. We did when our first Fjord was weaned. Not being completely stupid, we decided that more than a fence must separate mother and baby. Wasn't much fun listening to the distressed sounds from the mare and baby. Oh well, it goes with the territory... Again, thanks to all for the suggestions. Fred Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, WA USA

RE: Poem for Catherine and Markman
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear Catherine and all, with special thanks for the poem to Jean Ernest We lost a miniature foal last week. The baby had died in the womb and the mother could not get it out the birth canal. It took all my, and the vet's strength, to dislodge the dead baby. The head was depressed (not nose first) which probably caused the baby to die before birth. The head was deformed, with the lower jaw much longer than the nose. It probably would have been unable to eat. Possibly God saw fit to call back this little creature. We would have had to make the choice of putting the colt down. The next morning, we were sent another baby, a beautiful female Llama cria (baby), which eased the pain. Yet, the pain and heartache will never go away. Catherine, our family grieves with youand any others that have God's choice creatures removed from their care. Fred and Lois Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, WA USA

PE_CIH (One week after its destructive payload) - PE_CIH was one of the most damaging viruses in 1999 and many people expected it to be among the most damaging viruses in 2000. Fortunately, the damage caused by PE_CIH on April 26th of this year was not as bad as expected. Only very few customers reported data loss and the overall number of affected systems was less than 20,000 world-wide (compared to over 300,000 in 1999). While this number suggests that the number of infected PE_CIH systems has gone down dramatically, PE_CIH still remains a TOP 10 virus. Need some advice.
This message is from: "Frederick J. \(Fred\) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Our foal, born January 29th, has had recurrent bouts of diarrhea. These do NOT seem to be associated with foal heat. First we tried a series of Pepto Bismol doses. These stemmed the problem for a short time, then the diarrhea started again. We have had a fecal check done. No parasites. Then we tried a series of Bismuth doses (Equi-Biz) using 15cc x 3 times a day for two days. Again the diarrhea almost stopped. Now we have removed any grain from the diet (Equine Junior) and diet strictly of Orchard Grass and mama's milk. Perhaps we should have the mare's milk checked. What would we check for? Finally, she is back on Equi-Biz and ProBios at a dosage of 15cc Bismuth and 10cc ProBios today (without any grain), three times a day. She has had only one movement (semi-firm) between 5PM and now (9:30PM). She has been allowed only limited pasture on VERY short grass, and only for 2-3 hours today. We would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Fred and Lois Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, WA US

This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> One day in heaven, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint John were standing around near the horse paddocks watching the horses frolic. "I am certainly bored," stated John. "Me too," Paul chimed in. Peter stood and watched the horses. "I know!" Peter began. "Why don't we have a horse show?" Paul and John thought that the idea was great except for one small detail that Paul pointed out. "Who are we to compete against, Peter?" Paul asked. The trio pondered a moment when Peter realized the answer. "We will call up Satan and invite him to the horse show. I mean, we have all of the finest horses here in heaven, all of the World and National Champions are here. His stable is ridden with the spoiled, difficult and mean horses. We are certain to win at the show!" And so the trio calls up Satan on the other realm communication lines and invited him to their horse show. Satan laughed and asked why they would want to be humiliated like that, because he would certainly beat them. Peter, Paul and John did not understand. "What do you mean Satan?" Peter asked. "We have all of the National and World Champion horses in our stable in heaven. How could you possibly beat us?" Satan paused a moment and then laughed. "Have you forgotten so soon gentlemen? I have all the judges!"

RE: 20 gauge
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> You are correct, except thata slug for the shotgun...called a sabot was developed. These will go right through an engine or a 6" brick wall. During one of the layoffs with Northwest Airlines, I worked 2 years as a police officer in Bloomington, Minnesota. We were trained in the combat aspects of using a shotgun. Nothing, repeat nothing, can equal a shotgun in close quarters. If I had to go after a cougar or bear that was endangering my animals, I would opt for my riot gun (legal) every time. I carry the first two shots as 00 Buck, the next two are slugs, the next four are fleschette rounds. One of the beauties of using a shotgun is that the rounds will not carry to the next ranch so the need to ascertain a good backstop (before firing) is moot. A shot into the air to frighten away a predator will not come down on your neighbors head.. The ladies choice of a 20 gauge vs. a 12 gauge is a wise one. She can handle the 20, and it carries almost as much punch.when needed. Sorry list...for the gun stuff. But a gun is nothing more than a tool. Used wisely and it can protect you and yours. I would rather have a Remington 870 with a pistol grip (loaded with 00 Buck) for any close quarters need..including Bear or Cougar..or. than any rifle. In Viet Nam most of the shotguns used flechette rounds. If you don't know what they are, don't ask.they are nasty. Keep one handy with an extended 8 shot tubular magazine. Thank you. > >One of our horses came to us about six months back, and since that time he has eaten his way through several boards and pieces of two gates. It's driving us nuts. We've tried various solutions painted on the wood, two commercial ones (chew stop and no chew) and they haven't made any difference in his behavior. We've also tried Tabasco sauce and liquid soap, but he still keeps chewing. > >I know you'll ask me this, so the answer is that he really does get enough turnout time, like all day every day! He comes in at night and spends the night in his stall with about half a bale of hay, so it's not like he doesn't have anything to chew. > >I forgot to mention this to my vet when she was out here in October. Should I call her, or is there anything she is likely to be able to do about it? I don't want to drug the horse, and I'm not real impressed with cribbing collars. Anyway he isn't technically cribbing, just chewing wood and eating it. Do you have any suggestions for me? All of our horses get mixed hay (alfalfa and orchard grass), sweetfeed, and they all have saltblocks, so I don't think it's a diet issue. > >Thanks in advance! >Patrick > > Hi Patrick! Thanks for the kind words about HORSE-SENSE. ;-) I can think of several things that might help in this situation. First, DO talk to your vet, and ask her to check your horse's teeth very, very carefully. Second, get a copy of the NRC guidelines for horse nutrition (it's available in paper form, on diskette and, by now, probably on CD-Rom too) and figure out exactly what your horse needs -- then compare it to what he is getting. If, on paper, you are feeding a perfectly-balanced diet and meeting all of your horse's nutritional needs, then you'll need to dig deeper. This may involve having your pasture grass and your hay tested -- or, if there are known deficiencies in your area's soil, it may just mean that you'll need to purchase and feed a supplement formulated to make up for the specific deficiencies in your area. Third, if your vet agrees, try feeding this horse more hay and less grain. In any case, I would strongly advise giving this horse oats rather than sweetfeed. There are horses that chew wood ONLY after they've eaten something very sweet -- and sweetfeed, with all of that molasses, definitely qualifies. It's quite possible that your horse may stop eating wood and focus on his hay instead, as long as he isn't getting molasses or other sugar in his diet. One warning: if this works for you (eliminating molasses and sugar), be careful not to feed this horse sugar lumps or mints or cookies as treats, because ONE sugar lump can be enough to start the wood-chewing again. I don't know precisely why this happens, but I've seen it happen with more than one horse. This doesn't mean "no treats", but for horses like this, pasta (uncooked) is much less likely to bring on a wood-chewing session. And most horses adore pasta -- I always have a box of medium shells or rigatoni somewhere in my tack box. ;-) Good luck! It's hard enough to keep up with the normal maintenance of wooden stall boards and fences and gates, without the wood-chewing assistance of a twelve-hundred-pound beaver. ;-) Jessica = Copyright (C) 2000. Rainbow Bridge
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear Michelle, This is the poem that Jean spoke of on the list. I hope it may help you with your grief. It has with ours. This is not only sent privately, but also to the Fjord list. Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together... Fred and Lois Pack Pack's Peak Stables Pack's Peak, Washington USA

Fred and Lois Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, WA Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
RE: List must move (READ and RESPOND!)
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear Steve, I feel a little embarrassed to find out that you have been footing the bill for all of OUR enjoyment. Personally, Lois and I would be glad to contribute towards a non-advertising list. However, to keep those of the group who could not/would not contribute, the move to a small advertising blurb at the bottom list should be acceptable to most all. I would prefer a non advertising list, but would rather have the group intact.as some would drop out should a charge/contribution situation arise. Lastly, It's YOUR list and we are your guests here. Do as YOU see fit. I trust your judgement. RE: beagle dogs
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear List, We had to get rid of a Basset Hound (same family as a beagle). It would bite any young animal that tried to sniff it. Tore open the nose of our resident deer, Hucklebuck. The final straw was when it tore open the nose of a young Llama. Sneaky and devious dogs. We have three beautiful Great Pyrenees ladies that sleep all day (except when they hear a hawk or trouble), and guard all night. Although we have plenty of bobcat, coyotes, cougar, and bearnone have ever entered our perimeter. Possums that are dumb enough to try to get to our birds, end up as a dead present on our front porch.. We can't recommend the Pyr's more highly. We also have two "yappers", Maltese. Libby page
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dear Laurie, I am sending this to you personally, and to the Fjord list. Lois and I started out for Libby with all good intentions. We left the Mount Rainier area and just got across the Cascade mountains, when the pain of driving a car (bad back) got so intense that we had to stop short. We had to turn around and return home the next day. So sorry we were not able to meet and visit with you great horse people. Your effort in making your Libby web page is greatly appreciated by us. We were able to go there (vicariously) and enjoy the show. Thanks from both of us... Fred and Lois Pack Pack's Peak Stables Pack's Peak, Washington USA
RE: Horses as Therapy and Losses and Flies
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Jean and all, We have tried the fly predators from Spaulding Labs and others. These fly predators work ONLY on filth flies, not on the ones that bother our horses. The best luck in controlling the fly population in general has been the use of fly trapsbaited with bone meal and an ammonia compound in one of the hanging bag types. RE: clarification of "happy" worm
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Brian, and all, The worm shows as an icon, or attachment. It will ONLY activate and cause damage IF CLICKED ON. If you see any forum message with an attachment (usually showing a paperclip or some such), just opening the test part of the message will do no harm. The worm's ICON is LABELED. If it shows Happy99.exejust delete the message without clicking on the icon. To protect yourself, there are several options. Go to http://www.avp.com/happy/happy.html and check out the information there. My fix (windows95) was to change one file to a read only status. Even if I clicked on the Happy99.exe iconit CAN NOT infect my system or be passed on. Rather than type all the information here, all should check the above site for troubleshooting prevention and cure. All the Best Fred Pack Pack's Peak Stables This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Steve, There seems to be confusion about whether or not just reading a message can get you in trouble. I wonder if the reduced volume of messages these last few days is due to worry about the worm. Am I correct in thinking a computer cannot be affected by a person simply reading the e-mail message? Don't you actually have to click on an icon within the message itself to get in trouble? Brian Jacobsen
RE: Truck and trailer
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Nancy and Ernie, The other comments on the board, in reply to your question, are "right on". I would especially emphasize the two vehicle. We use a Ford 250 with a BIG 460 cubic inch GAS engine. Fred Pack Pack's Peak Stables Wilkeson, Washington USA you wrote: Hi - this is Nancy and Ernie from NH - we are in the market for getting our first truck and trailer - we want a trailer that would house both Sonnie and a meadowbrook carriage. We are thinking of getting a Ford F150 and a gooseneck 2 horse stock trailer. Does anyone have any suggestions about wether this combination is adequate. We would appreciate any info. Thanks everyone! Nancy
RE: Fjord Henning carvings
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Merek and the group, I included the message to reference what was writtenespecially about the T Shirts etc. BTW, we got our Hennings from the outfit you wrote about. FYI, Sony has an internet site where you can send in any picture and they will make prints, T Shirts, Coffee Mugs, Hats, etc...using your photo. We ordered several coffee mugs and several hats with pictures of our "babies" on them. RE: alternative treatments/mud
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Teressa and all, We use hot air (two motor) "Circuiteer II (Roman numeral 2) made by Electric Cleaner Co. Inc of Osseo, Wisconsin 54758. It is about the size of an old tube type Electrolux vacuum cleaner. It has a selection of using one motor or two. Using two motors will put out enough air to "stand you upright" at 10 feet. We bought them for our Llamas (found them in a Llama magazine) but found that the Fjords love them. Holding the air nozzle just a few inches from the coat, cleans the Fjords, Llamas, and Miniature Horses right down to the skin.sand and all.gone. Our Fjords come running when they see us coming with the "Circuiteer" as a "treatment" with one is like getting scratched all over. Will blast all but the most stubborn mud cakes right off the horse. Care must be taken, however, around the ears so as not to blast the air inside the passage. When doing the head, we always work from the back of the horse. They really put out "warm" not hot air. The air is warmed by the air passing over the drive motors. Not cheap, but worth the price. RE: Fahrenheit - Celsius (off topic)
This message is from: "Frederick J. (Fred) Pack" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Saskia, One correction to your chart, it must have been a typo, 59oF=15oC which is Standard Atmospheric Temperature for all nautical and aeronautical calculations. As a international airline pilot (now retired) we had an easy method for calculating Celsius to Fahrenheit in our heads: Double it Take away 10% Add 32 As: 10C Doubled is 20 Take away 10% which is 2.leaves 18 Add 32answer 50F Works in reverse for F to C 50F take away 32=18 add 10% which is roughly 2=20 half of 20=10 I found a little list in my dictionary: FahrenheitCelsius -- 212° _ 100° (boiling point) 104°___ 40° 95° 35° 77° 25° 68° 20° 59° 14° Should be 15 50° 10° 41° 5° 32° 0° 23° - 5° 14°-10° 5°_-15° To calculate Fahrenheit to Celsius: 5/9 (°F - 32) The inverse: (9/5°C) + 32 I hope this helps someone... I have it next to my computer from now on! Happy Fjording!
