It's a boy
This message is from: "Janne" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Renate gave birth to a nice colt on the eve/night of the 9th. The sire is Engar. Colt and mare doing great, but did certainly surprise us by coming a bit early. No waxing etc, but all is well. He is a friendly little colt, and a brown dun. Was hoping for a Red dun as Renate had one a few years back, and it is one of my favorite colors, but totally happy all is well with mom and son. Since he was born on our 10th anniversary, we may call him MF Solum from the church in Norway where we were married. ooohhh, so sentimental. :> On another note, the Rainbow Bridge became a reality for us the same morning Solum was born, as Maria's pony died. She had lost a colt by breech on Tuesday, then Thursday went into severe colic, - either impacted or more likely a twist. Was for sure keeping an eye on her after loosing her colt, looking for problems like founder and uterine infection etc, and of course colic is a possibility as well, but oh, those things come so quick. She was tough as nails this little gal, we fought for her for 2 whole days, doing all the usual at the clinic, tubing etcetcetc, but she could not pull thru. So, one sad little girl here at the farm as she just loved her April. Fjords are still to big for her, so we will be looking for another pony soon, when all heals over. A new foal and a new kitten helps out a bit. Good ponies are hard to come by, and she was quite bonded to this one at her young age. Onwards, Janne in sunny and hot ND.
Bragda's 8th .. it's a boy!
This message is from: "Cheryl Beillard" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I don't know how it slipped my mind , just been major confusion here this last week, but I did want to report that our beautiful mare BRAGDA who came to me courtesy of Julie Will, gave birth at 1 am last Thursday, to a colt. "A" is our first FELIX SON -- so far we have had only fillies by Felix. He is as yet unnamed but not unnoticed by every other horse on the farm .. we were concerned at the fact that he didn't nurse for 3 hours on arrival, but he's made up for it since. Poor Bragda scarcely has 10 minutes to catch her breath and a bite to eat before he's back drinking again. The 3 babes (and I do mean "babes") from last summer, all hang out over the fence watching the back door of the barn for his nibs to appear. Zahra, Bragda's foal from last year, is clearly upset that she's lost her spot as #1 in Bragda's eyes. The older horses keep their eyes glued to the foal paddock from their field, as well. We're all fascinated, it seems. He arrived on Howard Fiedler's birthday - he of Green Valley fame, by the way. And the connection will be forever in our minds as we were delighted to be able to help Howard celebrate (despite being a teensy bit sleep deprived). He was here, along with the rest of the crew up here to attend Pat Wolfe's workshop last week .. and it was a great evening. It is always wonderful to bring Fjord people together, we all have our stories and our shared interest and it feels like 'family' within minutes. Any of you up here visiting in Ontario should consider yourselves welcome at any time, we always have a guestroom available for Fjord people in transit! Although you might have to make a fair detour to get here! : ) A massive update of our websit in terms of pictures from last year and this - plus getting the full catalogue of our marathon carriages online, is long overdue .. SO anyone interested in a Felix son, out of one of the top mares in North America, should contact me privately .. and I'll send you some pictures .. he has Felix's beautiful head and good shoulder .. altogeher, very nice! : ) He will be very well priced too, as we have to cut back a bit on our herd this fall .. we've outgrown our capacity to house horses over the winter -- a key point in this climate! and I want to focus more on DRIVING and the carriage business. We will have details on two older, trained mares also for sale on the website soon. Now back to the inevitable extra chores that go wth tending to a new arrival. With a smile of course! And I'm watching those hind feet, Peg, as I don't think I could accomplish half those tasks you listed with only one hand working! Cheryl Beillard Wake-Robin Farm Fjords www.wakerobinfarm.ca

IT'S A BOY NAMED TOBIN
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The PMU fjord mare, Tyne, that I adopted earlier this year gave birth to a dun colt this morning just after 9am. I really thought as she has only been here a few months that she would foal in the dark of night, but no, after eating a full breakfast she laid down and gave birth and immediately wanted lunch, that's a fjord for you not going to miss a meal for any reason. The vet has already checked him and all is well. I will now be able to go to Starfire next weekend and visit Beth and Sandy and see, the last foal born here, my 3 year old Keswick. Ain't life grand. Yes, she is a Fjord. I referred to her as grey because, currently, the grey dun fjords are not referred to as grey dun, but as grey (as in the NFHR documents about color.) I missed the part of Karen Keith's e-mail where she was talking about a breed other than a fjord, so my apologies for the misunderstanding. As far as I understand with other breeds, one would need one grey parent to produce a grey. Beth -- Beth Beymer & Sandy North Starfire Farm, Berthoud CO http://www.starfirefarm.com
Re: It's a Boy
This message is from: "Karen Keith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Yes, I was talking about true grey horses, such as in Lipizzaners. In this case we were talking about a warmblood foal rather than a Fjord. The grey gene is a dominant and, if present, will express itself. So if you have a non-grey baby out of one or two grey parents, that baby is not carrying the grey gene and has no grey gene to pass on to its progeny. As far as grey Fjords, they are a black base coat with the dun dilution, no "grey" gene involved. What in Fjords is called a grey dun would be called any number of names in the non-Fjord world: grullo, silver grullo, blue dun, black dun, lobo dun. Way more than anyone wanted to know. :^) Cheers! I believe you're talking about two completely different things here Karen was not talking about Fjords. She was talking about true Grey horses - as in mixtures of black & white hairs - and yes, I believe she's right, one parent has to have been a grey to produce a grey. (unless both parents have a recessive, possibly, I'm not totally sure.) Amy

This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Beth..Are you talking about Fjords here? The grey Fjords are really not "Grey" in the sense of other breeds, but are grey DUN or grullo it would be called in quarterhorses...I think she is talking about a Hannoverian or warmblood, where the Grey wold be different and I think might require one parent to be grey. Nina the fjord and Kate a thoroughbred and Mom Lucinda's best buddy kept all the others at bay while he got his sea legs. He is gorgeous of course I would say that. Not sure if he'll be black or gray - Mom's black and Dad,Juventus< is a bay. Any way another boy (albeit nonfjord) to add to the boy list. Makes me want to breed Nina and others right away. Would be nice if he had another baby to play with. It is an open show, but has showcase classes for Fjords and Haflinger horses. This year is our second (hopefully annual) show. We are hoping that this show will continue to grow to eventually be an all Fjord & Haflinger show. Amy

John and Martie your loss just makes me all the more thankful for my blessings! My mare is due June 17th. This is her first time. I can tell she's going to go early...she's been HUGE for months, and her udder has filled in and waxed up.I have a feeling it's going to be today/tonight. It's pouring here so I keep her inside even though I had planned to let her birth at pasture. We had plans to go out with friends.so I checked her at 11am, noticed her udder was really round todayand very waxed up teats. I made sure her stall was nicely padded with straw, she had plenty of hay and water, and left. While I'm away I'm thinking tonight will be the nightwhat I'll take to the barn when I get home, how cold it's going to be with the rain, etc. We get home later then plannedit's now after 8pm, when I thought I'd be home by 5pm. I go change my shoes, and coatget to the stalland SURPRISE.he's already here. This first time mom is doing WONDERFULno help, seems to have had no problems I'm sorry I missed it, but sure glad she did OK with out me. He's a BIG boy34inc tall. Strong, can't even see a rib on this porkchop :) I'd say he's been here a few hours...pretty much dried except his bum, and he's pretty feisty! I'm sure glad he's here, even if he was earlyand I missed it! His aunt is due with in the next few weeks too, maybe I'll get to see that one be born. This message is from: misha nogha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Our mare Quad L's Megan had her foal tonight (9:00 pm) and it is a beautiful and big boned boy. We named him Shota's Hugin so he can be a match with his brother this year, Shota's Munin. Amma is our sweet little light style girl in the middle of our big boys! All for sale this fall if any one is interested! It's so fun to write the list and make a birth announcement. So far baby and mom are doing well and dad, Woodland's Jovan, is a happy guy. Best Misha
