We use the 1 port Byterunner card on several machines in our lab. It's
about $22 and it just works.

Retirement is GREAT!! Just like Tony the Tiger used to say.

I'm so busy with ham stuff and house stuff, I'm not sure how I used to fit
work into the daily schedule.

If you are ever in Charleston, SC give me a shout. That goes for others
here as well.

Sadly, some laptops have a BIOS which will not support a parallel port
through the Cardbus slot(s). My Dell 9300 is one such beast - and many
recent Dells share this same problem -- or is it a feature? I tried
three different brands of Cardbus parallel port adapter, including the

in some other laptops I have - but they already have a parallel port :-(
Legacy ports can be a challenge at times!

Anything that supports Vista and puts out a steady state high voltage of
+2.4v specified by the IEEE 1284 specifications. It just does "bit

Sorry about that. It is a Desktop (Dell XPS 410). It does have PCI

Just wonder about opinions out there. I will be a new flexer. This is

Re: [Flexradio] Parallel Port Recommendation

2007-04-17 Thread Terry Fox
I went to the local computer store, and purchased a fairly generic PCI
parallel port. It works very fine with my SDR-1000. The driver says NetMos
PCI enhanced ECP parallel port. I think that most aftermarket parallel port
cards would likely be OK, if they are enhanced parallel ports..

The only wierdness is that the parallel port is not the common 378, 3A8, or
other addresses. It is CC78. In PowerSDR, you must type the port number
into the box, there is not a drop-down with that address. After that, it
worked fine.

For a laptop, I have used the Quatech SPP-100G PCMCIA enhanced parallel port
with my Toshiba Satellite. It also works good, but also has the high port
address, not 378, 3A8, or other common address.

All I did for mine was go to the local screwdriver shop and ask for one
that was fully compliant with the standards (some aren't). Got a nice
card, has always worked. 25 USD.

One nicety that I got wrong as have some others -- the drop down to put
in the port address in the PowerSDR setup can be manually typed if your
port address isn't in the list. This is, I believe, in the manual, but
it's a little unusual and so perhaps overlooked. "The usual" control
panel work will yield the port address for your card.

I recommend that you get a cable that is the full 25 pins and
well-shielded. Make sure also that it has the pair of screws on each
end for the connectors. Loose cables can cause many mysteries, but a
solid cable setup eliminates them.

[Flexradio] PA Parasitic

2007-04-17 Thread Mark Mumaw
I have developed a strange parasitic that I have determined is from the
PA. It is at 5.350 MHz plus or minus 50 Hz. It seems to be voltage
sensitive. Today it develops if the power supply is at or below 11
volts but yesterday it would start oscillating at around 13.3 volts. I
first noticed this when keying the rig without any drive would generate
a ½ watt with a very high SWR through my linear. Further research showed
that this parasitic was generated even with the SDR-1000 in the off
position but DC still applied to the rig, (PA still getting DC).

Has anyone else ever experienced this

Re: [Flexradio] fire/usb

2007-04-17 Thread Terry Fox
Not to beat a dead horse too much, but
Just today, I tried to fire up a new FPGA board (Xylo from knjn.com), and
that darned enumeration raised its ugly head again.

The board won't load the proper drivers because XP Media Center edition
seems to think the FPGA card is a DVB-T USB receiver. I tried three
different computers. I need to get an eeprom, and add it to an already
expensive board.

Long live firewire.

Bob is exactly right. If USB could have done the job, we would have been
selling USB sound cards for years. The fact is we looked at every vendor on
the planet and could not find a single USB device that had the number of
inputs and outputs we needed. We found them in FireWire but not USB.

When designing the FLEX-5000, I spoke with the key chip vendors and they
informed me that if you want more than one stereo input and one stereo
output go FireWire period.

You are correct that the QSD is essentially a band pass tracking filter. It
only requires that you filter harmonic frequencies. Saturation is +3 dBm at
the antenna connector with the preamp off. That is about S9 +80 dB.

Re: [Flexradio] ANF

2007-04-17 Thread Joe - AB1DO
Hi Bob, Pete,

On start-up I too have found that ANF and NR both start as if Block LMS is
DISABLED, irrespective of whether it is selected or not. Only after
unchecking and rechecking will Block LMS be activated. This behavior occurs
in both the official 1.8.0 release and in the SDR-X SVNs. Neither starting
with a clean database, nor doing a complete reinstall changes this. Hope
this helps. Let me know if you want me to report to the bug-tracker.

It is a good carrier and the behavior of the controls is now what it
always should have been. Only gain impacts Block LMS so it makes no
sense to have these enabled for block LMS.

Re: [Flexradio] ANF

2007-04-17 Thread n3evl
I ran a few tests with ANF while listening to 60m Ch2 this evening:

1) Playing around with the various settings in the setup panel (Taps, Delay,
Gain) had no effect on the carrier present in the passband. Note that Block
LMS was ON.

2) On turning Block LMS OFF, the carrier's audio comtribution is pretty well
suppressed; the remaining SSB audio is somewhat distorted with Taps, Delay,
and Gain at the default settins of 65, 50, 25 respectively.

3) I noticed that when I now toggle Block LMS ON, the Taps and Delay
controls are disabled. Toggling Block LMS OFF enables them again. This was
not the initial state when I first displayed the setup dialog - all three
were enabled with Block LMS enabled.

So, it would appear that a) the Block LMS feature might be misbehaving and
b) there is a UI issue with initial enable/disable of controls based on the
current Block LMS state.

These tests were performed with SDR-X SVN:1145

I am looking for the older versions of the software "SDRConsole"
in Visual Basic, anyone know where I could find this?

Also I would like to browse the first forum that had lots of info

find it!'the forum that is,not the radio'!

Sure hope this info is still around!

 Thanks Much

Actually, since the A/D comes after the QSD, there IS essentially a
bandpass filter (actually low pass, that's been "aliased" or
"translated" up to the HF input frequency). As long as the opamps
and switches don't saturate (e.g. Volts) you'll be ok.

>WELL PHOOEY, that won't do. We will have to work on how optimize the

I've been hesitant to mention NR because everyone seems satisfied with it,
however
personally I've never found the results to be as good as the outboard units
from
companies such as BHI in the UK and Michels-Engineering in Germany in getting
rid of, for example, low band "frying bacon" type qrn and general hash etc .
The
german unit is designed specifically for the extraction of the speech waveform
when surrounded by noise. BHI is similar but works with cw as well.

NR was greatly enhanced with the introduction of Block LMS but to my mind/ear
still introduces a sort of muddiness to the audio, a loss of brightness etc
which the
outboard units (especially the Michels unit) do not. Remember I'm talking weak
signal SSB, 160/80/40 gray line dx etc.
I suspect that the cw guys are quite happy with NR as it stands. Perhaps we
need
two separate NR systems, one specifically designed for the recovery of speech
and the other for cw, in the presence of noise.

Its difficult to describe in words so here are a couple of links to some audio
samples of both units in operation

http://www.home.vrweb.de/michels/sound_demo.htm
http://www.radio.bhinstrumentation.co.uk/html/demonstration.html

There is a downside to using these units in that they are only capable of
working
with a mono input so I loose the binaural (which is a shame) and sub rx
functions,
but hey you can't have everything.. or can we :-)

Re: [Flexradio] ANF

2007-04-17 Thread John Hansen
I have this same problem and have been meaning to post about it for some
time.I notice that the notch filter works reasonably well when a
signal is in the clear, but when it is on top of an SSB signal, the
notch filter is not very effective. I've been assuming that this
relates to some DSP settings that I need to tweak in order to get this
working better. It would be a real service if someone who is having
good luck with their notch filter would post the settings that they are
using.

OK... but that issue -- whether USB 2.0 is capable of handling
professional audio or video requirements -- is not the point with which
I took issue. It is, in fact, an entirely different question.

The only point with which I took issue was Gerald's statement that USB
wasn't designed to handle streaming audio and video. It clearly is.
Now, that video might be from web cams, and that audio might be output
to cheap "multimedia" speakers that casual users hook up to their
computers. But USB was in fact designed for streaming, not just for
keyboards and mice. That's the purpose of bandwidth reservation --
that's the purpose of isochronous transfers.

My work in designing and implementing (the firmware and driver for) a
*very* simple USB device that supports isochronous transfers shows that
USB can do quite a nice job of streaming media *within its specified
throughput range*

I'm perfectly willing to grant that 1394 is a better choice given the
5K's throughput requirements. Good job Flex.

Now, you also mentioned "in order and on time delivery" -- I am not a
USB protocol expert, but I am not aware of *any* mechanism for
delivering USB data for OUT of order. In addition, if "on time" is
defined as "with worst-case latency at the bus bounded by pre-specified
values" then I'd say that USB iso transfers also meet the definition of
"on time".

Finally, whether something is used in the pro audio community is really
a function of lots of things... Sometimes the least of which is
capability. When's the last time you saw anybody OUTSIDE the pro audio
community record something to DAT tape? Or (analog) reel-to-reel tape
for that matter. Having said that, note that there ARE pro audio
devices with USB interfaces (not necessarily for super high throughput
devices... but I'm aware of devices from both Mackie and Alesis, for
example, that have USB interfaces... and there are numerous instrument
interfaces that connect via USB).

Again, this is all a tangent to what I referred to in my original note
as a "nit" -- As I said in my original note, Gerald's reply that said
"look at USB, but it couldn't meet the specs" sounds like one of the
best engineering reason I could think of to rule-out a particular
technology.

I was never able to get the ANF settings adjusted to where it did not
sound watery and attenuate all of the high frequency response. I just
eventually gave up on using the ANF.

So I don't believe it is a problem with your system either.

Oops! I guess I became confused early on when I was told that the

Re: [Flexradio] FW: Problems loading SDR-x svn 1143

2007-04-17 Thread Dave Muskopf
Thats what I did too. It froze up after 4 sec. Deleting all and starting
over did it. I have had to do this two or three times b4. Just be sure
and re do all your port connections, settings etc. Cpu usage is way down
with this version. It also sounds clean some how. W8XO

All the requests for more information is a positive sign that there is
a lot of interest in the new radio. This has to be great news for
Flex.

[Flexradio] FAQ - Q45

Thank you very much clarification. As much as one may like closed source or not,
one can understand why this is being done.

Just to be sure that I understand correctly. Standard usage is TX in Ham Bands
only. If I send a copy of my HAM license to Flex then out of band operation can
be activated, e.g. for a transverter with an IF at 40MHz.
