Re: [Flexradio] Atu malfunction with Flex-3000

2009-04-24 Thread Mike Schwendeman
Thanks, Dudley;

I will ask a local ham to bring his dummy load over, and I will TEE them
together. (Good idea!) I am surprised that the tuner will (logically)
NOT attempt to tune, if it is looking at a "good enough" load. (Oh,
well...)

You had mentioned that your Flex-3000 does not TUNE your dummy load; In
this case, do you get a GREEN ATU button indication i n PowerSDR?

My loop antenna is 2 or 3 to one VSWR on 75 meters, for sure. In this
case, I'd expect the tuner to at least ATTEMPT to tune. -Even if it
fails, I mean. (Is this not true?) -For example, if one attaches a
load that has a known 10:1 VSWR, is it correct to assume that the ATU
will go through an ATTEMPT to tune, even if it fails? (Which would take
several seconds.) I would fully expect this to be the operation, as
this has been the case for ALL of the many ATU devices that I have
owned. (I have owned way too many, and all had this predictable
try-tune-even-if-fail; -Even my now-gone SDR-1000's ATU did this!)

In my case, the ATU "refuses" after an extremely short tune-period!
-Short tune-period is defined as under one second, which is what I am
seeing. (Only one time, did I see the ATU do a LONG tune-up, resulting
in a GREEN ATU button in PowerSDR. This tune-period took 8 to 10
seconds, as I recall. This was on my loop antenna, the one with the
2:1 or 3:1 VSWR.)

When I attach my LDG Z-11-Pro to the Flex-3000, it takes several seconds
to tune, as I'd expect. As such, I'd expect the Flex-3000's ATU to at
least go through some gyrations, attempting to tune. -Even if it
fails. This is OK and expected, but it is expected to TRY, from my
experience with a lot of other ATU devices that I have owned.

Thank you for your input.

What I did not know was that the "fast tune-up" was not a tune-up
after all! (I had interpreted the ATU button (in RED) and the BYP
(in YELLOW) as what I was looking for, in normal operation. On page
58 of the Flex-3000 operator manual, I see that I should see the ATU
in GREEN.

[Tim] If the ATU button turns green, then it was able to match
something better than what you had previously. If not it will be
bypassed.

[Mike] OK on that; I am tuning into a KNOWN GOOD (tested on an IC-756
Pro-II in RTTY and AM modes) dummy load. I have an expected 1:1
match, no reflected on the Icom radio. It was my hope that the ATU
would accept the dummy load that I am using.

I did see the ATU button in GREEN one time only, this on an antenna
that is less than 3:1 VSWR. (This one time event was seen today,
after a few hours of power-OFF for the radio.)

[Tim] The ATU will only tune antennas that are in between 1.1:1 to 3:1

[Mike] My point exactly. I am tuning into (mostly) the MFJ dummy
load. (This should meet the minimum requirements.) I have tried two
different coax cable assemblies, when I have tried to tune the Flex
into the dummy load; -I have this same non-tune into the dummy load
and/or to the actual antenna.

[Mike] Yet, if I do not tune, (if I ignore the ATU's refusal to tune)
I see 10 Watts of FWD power, and 0 Watts of REF power when I have the
dummy load attached to the Flex-3000. (As it should be, when I am
using a dummy load.) My point is that the dummy load is OK.

At all times (even when I first powered the unit up, and did a test
transmission into the dummy load while chatting with Dudley), I see
the SWR indication under the TX meter selection as 0.0:1. -As one
would expect, transmitting into a dummy load.

[Tim] The SWR meter only works when tuning. If you are just
transmitting, the SWR meter will always show 0.0:1

[Mike] OK on this. I had not known this, but I accept. When I
attempt an ATU-tune (the ATU attempts for a second (maximum time),
then refuses) I do not see any REF power. -Again, I am using a dummy
load, so this is as it should be. I should not see any reflected
power, and I do see the (10) watts of forward power, as it should be.

My settings and findings:
AM mode; Power is set to 10 Watts
10 Watts forward in TX meter FWD PWR
0.0 Watts showing in the TX meter REF PWR
0.0:1 showing in TX meter REF PWR

[Tim] Those numbers look exactly how they should for AM @ 1

Flex Radios, I recall a database that is DELETED to resolve various issues that
defy logic. -Is this one of those times..?

[Tim] No. I don't see where you have a problem.

I see three suspect (NEW) files in the PowerSRR v1.18.0 folde as follows:
   PowerSDR.mdb
[Tim] This is you primary database

   PowerSDR.ldb
[Tim] This is a temporary DB that is created when PowerSDR is running. It goes
away when PowerSDR is not running.

   power.csv
[Tim] This is the data file from running a power calibration

(All three files have today's date, 4/24/2009)

[Tim] These are files that are created when you run PowerSDR

One more NEW file, F3K_1609-0021 backup.csv is dated 4/23/2009, the date that I
actually received the unit.

[Tim] This is your EEPROM backup. Do not delete it

Any ideas?

I just got my 3K running this afternoon. What a fun radio. I would love to
make some 40M contacts with other flexer's I'm not big on 20. My experience
on getting going with the 3K is chronicled on w9oy-sdr.blogspot.com

as far as flextroscopy goes

You can make a .avi of the screen using this program

http://camstudio.org/ go down the page to down load v2.0 and the codec and
install. I set up the audio out of the F5K to my computer's soundcard and
used that to feed audio to the Camstudio recorder. This makes a .avi that you
can email to whoever you are talking to so they can see and hear what they look
and sound like

You can make a .avi of the screen using this program

http://camstudio.org/ go down the page to down load v2.0 and the codec and
install. I set up the audio out of the F5K to my computer's soundcard and
used that to feed audio to the Camstudio recorder. This makes a .avi that you
can email to whoever you are talking to so they can see and hear what they look

Why is the MONITOR function disabled in the AM & FM modes? It sure would be
nice to have.

Re: [Flexradio] Choice of PCs

2009-04-24 Thread Woodrick, Ed
Let me do a few compiles and do some movie editing and graphic rendering at the
same time that you are trying to talk on the radio. Something just tells me
that there's going to be a few audio dropouts.

If you have a system with significant overhead and you are using applications
that doesn't severely tax the system, then you should be a happy camper.

But if you buy a barely fast enough computer or run some CPU or I/O intensive
applications on a fast computer, you're probably going to have issues.

Installing PowerSDR on a 3 year old computer that has everything loaded on it
just probably isn't going to yield pleasurable results.

What I said was, especially if you are having problems, is to start with a
clean system and work your way up. But test to make sure that things keep
working.

I understand what you're getting at but, when it comes down to it, this
_isn't_ a regular radio! I fully expect the PC component of my radio to
be many other things as well.

Yes, I am careful about what I allow on there but I have yet to be
persuaded that my _general purpose computer_ cannot remain exactly that,
including running PowerSDR! To date, after obtaining a suitably fast
machine I have had zero problem running the radio and a variety of other
applications and have no intention of stripping this PC down to be a
glorified radio controller.

As you say, performance is going to depend on a variety of individual
choices of hardware, software, and configuration, and individual
mileage will vary, but I do not accept it as a given that the PC cannot
continue to perform as a general purpose device.

Mike,

Things may have changed since you used SVN last.

Based on your e-mail, you have only downloaded the binaries for the TRUNK. The
trunk is the current PowerSDR release (v1.18.0) with only bug fixes. It is the
most stable PowerSDR binaries in the SVN tree (excluding the tags).

The SVN folder that has the alpha/beta code is
PowerSDR/Branches/Test/bin/Release (as opposed to /PowerSDR/trunk/bin/Release
where you just recently created a repository via a "checkout"). You will need
to create different folder and do a checkout for that repository if you want to
use alpha code.

So to answer your questions:
1. Is it OK to right-click on the PowerSVN folder, select SVN Update?
[Tim] Yes. Any folder that has the SVN "check mark" can be updated. If you
update a "parent" folder, all of the "child" (sub-folders) below it will be
updated too

2. If I do this, I am assuming that PowerSDR 1.18.0 is to be shut down.
[Tim] Only the application you are updating needs to be shut down or you will
get an update error because it can not up date a file that you have open. As a
best practice. Shut down PowerSDR before updating

3. After I download the SVN(s), will I see an SVN number at the top of PowerSDR?
[Tim] Not necessarily. SVN has many different PowerSDR (and other
applications) project folders. An update in any folder in SVN increments the
SVN number. That does not mean that the folder you have checked out is the one
with the update just because the SVN number incremented. You have to look at
the SVN log to figure out what has been changed.

For more information about the SVN tree structure and how it is used, see the
following KB article
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50243.aspx

The bottom line is do the SVN update on the checkout folder and you will get
the latest version for that folder.

Good day, all;

I used to have an SDR-1000 a long time ago. Back then, I enjoyed the
progression the radio's functionality took, as I did the right-click and
selected (whatever it was) to allow the latest SVN to be installed.

Now that I have received my shiny Flex-3000, I am wondering if this is an
applicable action for those of us who are running this new series of radio.

It SEEMS very logical that YES, we can do this same action, but I am running
on an HP Pavilion computer which now has XP SP-3 running on it, AFTER A VERY
LONG BATTLE to make this a possibility. (It was Visty,
before.) I am just a little worried that I might mess up the efforts expended,
you see.

   I have downloaded and installed
TortoiseSVN-1.6.1.16129-win32-svn-1.6.1.msi. Per the instructions, I have made
a new folder named PowerSDR SVN. By right-clicking on this new folder, I
selected "SVN Checkout," then downloaded "Binaries Only:
svn://206.216.146.154/svn/repos_sdr_windows/PowerSDR/trunk/bin/Release"
as shown in the Tortoise instructions.

Looking at the LOG MESSAGES, I now see the newest revision as number 2943.
(I was SURE that I saw this number as nn50 (2950?) just before I updated this
list a moment ago! -What's THAT all about?)

   So, my basic questions:
1. Is it OK to right-click on the PowerSVN folder, select SVN Update?
2. If I do this, I am assuming that PowerSDR 1.18.0 is to be shut down.
3. After I download the SVN(s), will I see an SVN number at the top of PowerSDR?

What steps do I need to take?

Thank you for your patience. (I need this, as I am an old phart.)

bring Flex 3000 or 5000 operating manuals to Dayton, don't order from the

Just a short QST

There were several of us running FLEX-3000s last night on 40m (7.181) @
0130 UTC that gathered a fairly large round table before propagation
changed swiftly we all dropped into the noise. It was really fun to
listen to other FLEX-3000s and talking about the radio in general.
Particularly interesting is when you start using PowerSDR to record
stations over the air and play back their audio. Then other ops (usually
non Flexers) start gathering like crazy. Dale WA8SRA actually helped on
guy, Don K4ENE, identify and rectify a particularly loud noise on his
signal. Using the Panadapter, he was able to identify the interference as
being a really annoying 120 Hz peak. Of all things, it was isolated to
vibrational noise coming from his AMP being transmitted down the mic boom
and into his PR-781 mic. Now try that with a "firmware defined radio". I
think we have defined a new branch of science; flextroscopy -
characterizing over the air RF signals using an FlexRadio SDR HI HI.

If there is some interest in making an informal gathering on 40m, we can

[Flexradio] High Quality Color FLEX-3000 Owner's Manual NOW available.

2009-04-24 Thread Peter A Markavage
To all:

FLEX-3000 Owner's Manual is now available in a very high quality color
printed version. The manual is printed by a high quality color laser
printer on heavy stock bright white paper with heavy covers front and
rear, additional clear transparency cover, and can be bound several ways.
The manual can be bound by a comb binding for convenient lay-flat use,
pages only punched for a 3-hole binder, manual mounted in a 3-ring
binder, or manual supplied with no binding or punched holes. FlexRadio
Systems has authorized Pete, WA2CWA, DBA ManualMan, to print, sell, and
distribute the FLEX-3000 Owner's Manual. Further information should be
directed to p...@manualman.com or manual...@juno.com .

I set up an order process directly on my web site for obtaining the high
resolution, "all in color", latest version, laser printed operating
manual. Just go to http://www.manualman.com Click on "Search Our Online
Catalog" (upper right of screen). Then look to the right side of the
screen "Other ManualMan Products" and click on "Flex Radio Systems".
Choose the item of interest. Add to cart and proceed to checkout. It
will then take you to a profile screen where you can input name, address,
etc. (so I know where to ship it). After you complete and save this,
there will be a field to indicate your method of payment and then
complete the order. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to
send me an e-mail at manual...@juno.com or by phone (732) 238-8964.

NOTE: With Dayton Hamvention just around the corner, I will be shutting
down operations around May 3 to prepare, pack, etc. If you want me to
bring Flex 3000 or Flex 5000 operating manuals to Dayton for you to pick
up at my outside spaces 1960-1961 and save the shipping charge, manuals
need to be prepaid and I need to know as soon as possible in order to
print whatever I need to print.

[Flexradio] Latency problem finally SOLVED!

2009-04-24 Thread Robert Bajuk
Hello guys,

Great news ! Latency problem with my PC is finally solved

I hope some of you can find my experience useful

Just to refresh - using modern - powerful PC:

Core2Duo
E8400
4ghz Ram
MSI P43 NEO mother board
OS is Win XP SP3

To make a long story short The problem is MSI P43 NEO motherboard, to
be more specific - in BIOS, not in any hardware / software as suspected...

I've changed different official BIOS version but the same problem with the
huge DPC number ...

Results were really terrible:

http://lea.hamradio.si/scc/down/dpc-screen.jpg

I've decided to ask the official MSI support team for the support with DPC
problems... I got their response very fast - in 12 hours. They advised to
flash some BETA bios version - A7519ICI.101 in my case. I got log-in
instructions for their FPT server, downloaded and flashed this beta BIOS and
problem is solved.

Take a look of DPC screen after that:

http://lea.hamradio.si/scc/down/dpc-new.jpg

The difference is very obvious, maximum latency has dropped from 1960
n-seconds to 86 only!!!

I can still make some fine-tuning, but probably there is no need for that.

MSI guys are familiar with this problem but none of the official BIOS
versions solve this problem... Only unofficial BETA version from 2008 brings
results...

Good experience - we are always learning :-)

Re: [Flexradio] Choice of PCs

2009-04-24 Thread n3evl

Brian,

Your points are well taken. However, recent items in this thread seemed
to be suggesting that a stripped down, dedicated PC was a requirement
for running the radio, even to the extent of resorting to esoteric
flavors of XP! At least in my (statistically small sample of one) case,
this has proven to be otherwise. At the moment, it is convenient for me
to run a basically unmodified instance of XP Pro on a 4-core machine.
In that guise I can comfortably run my SDR-1000 on the delta44 card and
another instance of PowerSDR for my HPSDR kit, while still doing mail,
web browsing, digital modes via Ham Radio Deluxe, etc.

As I add to my HPSDR kit, I'll likely consider a more dedicated approach
for that radio.

When the details of the new architecture are available I'll evaluate the
distribution options that will be available, and no doubt needed, to
take advantage of the new possibilities.

Yes, I am indeed familiar with Moore's Law and am comfortable that my
present configuration (and any additional SDR capabilities I might
desire in the immediate future) will be accommodated by currently
achievable technology. Of course, I hope Bob, Frank, and the other
primary developers prove otherwise.

machine? A movie viewer?

I understand what you're getting at but, when it comes down to it,
this _isn't_ a regular radio! I fully expect the PC component of my
radio to be many other things as well.

Certainly. But what constitutes your "computer" may well change. More
below.

Yes, I am careful about what I allow on there but I have yet to be
persuaded that my _general purpose computer_ cannot remain exactly
that, including running PowerSDR!

This requires a change in mindset as to how things work. Sun
Microsystems has been saying it for years but it is true and correct,
that, "The Network is the Computer." It makes much more sense to
dedicate small computers to specific functions and then distribute
many of them no the network so that no single system carries all the
load. My home network currently has 9 or 10 machines scattered around
performing different tasks. Each is fairly small and more than half
have no rotating media (disk drives) because they are dedicated to
some function. One computer is dedicated to being a file server for
all the rest.

Personally, I am running a relatively small dedicated machine to power
my F5K. Right now this machine runs about 70% utilization because it
is running PSDR, VAC, com0com, ddutil, and fldigi. (I have stripped
most of the functions out of Windows to make this run efficiently.) I
expect this machine to get back a lot of capacity when we move to the
next generation of flex software and the radio display moves across
the network to my laptop, leaving just the DSP running on the
dedicated F5K machine.

To date, after obtaining a suitably fast machine I have had zero
problem running the radio and a variety of other applications and
have no intention of stripping this PC down to be a glorified radio
controller.

The proliferation of programs like cwskimmer are going to force you to
distribute. It will be possible to for the radio to multicast the I/Q
streams and to distribute the DSP so that you can effectively
demodulate and decode all the digital traffic on all the bands. It
*IS* going to happen but it isn't going to happen in a single machine.

As you say, performance is going to depend on a variety of
individual choices of hardware, software, and configuration, and
individual mileage will vary, but I do not accept it as a given that
the PC cannot continue to perform as a general purpose device.

Are you familiar with Moore's Law? It says that gate density, and
hence computing power, will double every two years. The amazing thing
about Moore's Law is that it has held up so well for over 50 years.
But we are seeing a shift in how that happens. In the past it was
accomplished by increasing the processing power of individual
processors by increasing gate density (more gates per unit of volume).
But as individual gates approach molecular size, that approach falters
as it becomes difficult to keep shrinking things. We have one more big
step and that is to quantum mechanical gates but after that, it will
be impossible to shrink the gate any further. At that point gate
density will remain fixed.

So the chip manufacturers have been continuing to adhere to Moore's
Law by moving to parallelism. The increase in performance is starting
to come from multiple processor cores. Since closely-coupled
processing using multiple cores is difficult, the power comes from the
splitting up the functions along the lines of logical interfaces and
loosely coupled processing. Once you do that it won't matter whether
the other part of your task is done in box A or box B around the
corner and across the network.

And then there is the final nail in coffin of the single central
processor: distributed computing is going to be a lot cheaper.

So you really do need to start thinking along these lines. The guys
working on the next generation of code recognize this and are working
to distribute the functions. You might want to consider embracing this
approach as, frankly, it is what is going to happen.

Good point. Some digi mode programs are better than others at generating AF
without the harmonics leaking through. That is why I always use a TX filter
that that matches the mode bandwidth + 20% for AFC shift for digital modes.

It is not just limited to looking at other station's signals. Using the
panadapter on TX I can see the aliasing of the signals from my digital mode
program. Granted they are down better than 70dB but it bothers me that they are
there at all. I have taken to changing the TX filter to filter them out and
improve the quality of my own TX signal.

So pay attention to the panadapter on TX to analyze your own signal.

start gathering like crazy. Dale WA8SRA actually helped on guy, Don K4ENE, identify and
rectify a particularly loud noise on his signal. Using the Panadapter, he was able to
identify the interference as being a really annoying 120 Hz peak. Of all things, it was
isolated to vibrational noise coming from his AMP being transmitted down the mic boom and
into his PR-781 mic. Now try that with a "firmware defined radio". I think we
have defined a new branch of science; flextroscopy - characterizing over the air RF
signals using an FlexRadio SDR H

If there is some interest in making an informal gathering on 40m, we can try to
do this several times a week.

Re: [Flexradio] Choice of PCs

Woodrick, Ed wrote:

Now, if you had a regular radio, would you install a toaster in it? What about

Why is the MONITOR function disabled in the AM & FM modes? It sure would be

[Flexradio] FLEX-3000 QRV on 40m

2009-04-24 Thread Tim Ellison
Just a short QST

There were several of us running FLEX-3000s last night on 40m (7.181) @ 0130
UTC that gathered a fairly large round table before propagation changed swiftly
we all dropped into the noise. It was really fun to listen to other FLEX-3000s
and talking about the radio in general. Particularly interesting is when you
start using PowerSDR to record stations over the air and play back their audio.
Then other ops (usually non Flexers) start gathering like crazy. Dale WA8SRA

Actually it's a bug. Try hitting "A<>B" twice and you can hear the sound plays
fine. Also if you press mox you can hear the sound normally and the bonus is
that the next time you don't need to press anything, just press play. But it's
only for one time, then again you need mox.
