Hello,

I'm new to the list but I didn't see any postings in the last 24 hours.

Am I at a dead end here?

I'm considering buying a flex 6700 and step up to the next generation of
radio's.

I'm a satisfied Elecraft user (K2/K3's) but ready for something new.

Let's see what this reflector brings up.

Kevin,

The SDR1000 did not have the built-in signal generator that was on the
3000/5000s.  That's way you had to use the XG signal generator as it put out
a consistent RF signal.   It's in the PowerSDR. 1.18.6 users guide.

Well, you shouldn't have that much if any RF in the shack.
Chokes, etc are band-aids masking a real problem, at least in the shack.
Of course if your antenna, feedline, coupling is not clean, resonant,
installed properly... which is probably why you have stray RF getting inside
to the gear.
Establish a stout/robust common earth ground outside the shack for feed-line
entrance, power supplies, radios, amps, tuners. ?Home-run heavy grounding
wire from each individual unit to the single common ground point. This
eliminates inter-equipment ground loops and re-radiation between chassis.?
BTW - shack electrical outlet 'ground' is NOT to be considered RF system
ground. Conductors are too light and likely loop through many other points
to some unknown eventual tie back to electrical common. That's for GFI
safety return.

Re: [Flexradio] Lightning Strikes

2014-07-18 Thread David R. Wilson
I will pile on just a bit more having also had similar experiences on
several occasions both at work and at the house.

1. Have the station properly grounded with a common ground for the
incoming power, antennas, antenna support, rig included.
w8ji.com is a good resource (among many others) for grounding ideas.

2. Some time ago (but not currently) I isolated the network hardware
at the house with fiber going between network switches. That helped
immensely with lightning problems hitting phone / network / cable lines.

3. It is a good idea to disconnect power and antenna connections in the
shack if the rig is not in use.

I have certainly lost many thousands of dollars worth of hardware over
the years due to lightning. I had one power supply at a repeater site
that was destroyed by lightning a number of years ago that had the power
cord and outputs disconnected and placed in the corner of the building.
It was not hooked to anything, but was still hit (while the rest of the
place survived the strike). It wasn't grounded. Lightning can do some
strange things.

air conditioner, the city sewer system both the electronics and pumping

DAMAGE. To understand why MY gear survived... May I suggest the following:

 1. Internet: Don’t use direct connection (RJ-45) to your modem, use RF
connection for added lightning protection. The new RF (USB) sticks are so
much faster than the older ones.
 2. RF: Disconnect all antenna connection and put the pig-tale
in a glass gar or some kind of insulator. Lightning can jump from the ends
of coax connectors, so don't forget putting them in insulator when not in
 use or during storm.
 3. AC POWER: Either disconnect, or at least use double switch box. The type
that has both a master switch and separate switches for each item. Both need
to be shut off. Having said that it is still best to disconnect.

NOTE: Lightning protectors and surge protectors DO NOT work all of the time
and almost never work with direct hit. Nothing protects like disconnection
of gear. People who tell you other wise are either salesmen (selling you
lightning protection), or just people that have never seen direct hits. I
serviced commercial two way systems and central dispatch systems and more
for 40 years. I can tell you that Lightning does what it wants to do and not
what you would expect. Even if you have all of the recommended surge
protection, it is still best to follow the above rules. Mike is right,
repairing after lightning is (at best) a maybe. I have been lucky in being
able to repair peoples equipment hit by lightning, but I do not recommend
 it. Please Disconnect.

 Ouch, that is too bad.

If you haven't filed a claim on your house insurance, you need to do that
now. They will take care of determining what has failed. At least, that
is what I did on a hydro surge. This is why you pay for it.

For you 5000, the easiest test is to try another computer. However, if the
ethernet card is gone, it will have taken most other things on the bus.
But, sadly it is a crap shoot.

The 5000 should be written off by your insurance company as there is no way
to be 100% that you can repair it back to factory specs. It just isn't
 practical at all.

I say all the above as an ex Manager of a Ham Radio Store. We would get
one of these per week and everyone was handled by the insurance. We never
tried to repair anything as there was no way to guarantee it. They also
have their professionals who do this.

We never had any trouble with any claims either.

Again, sorry to hear that. It is a pain in the butt, but you should come
 out ok.

I think you may have a couple issues going on.

One that Ken pointed out is that JT65/JT9 and associated programs, you must
check your input and output audio card assignment each time you invoke the
software, especially if you have rebooted. They can and do change.

If you are running Windows Vista and above you must set the sample rates for
VAC's in windows itself.

that, JT65 and JT9 stop working

I had taken a while to stumble through the instructions ofr getting JT65
and JT9 going. But, a couple weeks back, I had finally done so.

Yesterday, it stopped working. The reason seems to be, no matter what I
do, it has somehow re-defaulted everything and it won't let me change
anything, even after a fresh boot.

I have a picture (but I don't think I can successfully attach it here).

Salient points:

1. It does like me set the upper bound rate at 48000.
2. It does NOT let me see the Ms per interrrupt to 5 (it insists on 7 and
that has always failed for me).
3. I have to set cable range and not cable format also.
4. It also seems to think that even on a machine that I have just booted,
VAC has 19 clients.
5. When I do enable VAC, it does appear to set something, but with an
upper bound of 44K instead of 48K.
6. While I don't routinely run as administrator, I of course started the
VAC console in that mode.

All of this seems to mean is that tje JT modes don't work, which is what
I had before I set the parameters before.

How do I get past this so I can set them again?

[Flexradio] Sound card settings?

2014-05-31 Thread David Land
Gary,
Regarding your email below. This is the first time I've notice that this
might be a problem. I knew that all the settings inside PowerSDR should be
the same but didn't know about the external sound card settings! So now I
double checked, in 'setup' I have 'Audio' 'Primary' set to Buffer of 2048
and Sample rate of 96000. In VAC 1 I have the same but 'stereo' is not
clicked. Should it be? I'm running a F3000 so there is no VAC 2.

Then on my sound card of the PC, used to do just the normal PC sounds and
such I have it set to 24 bit 96000 Hz for playback, I also checked the
other set of speakers and the two Line 1 and Line 2 playbacks were all
shown as Virtual Audio Cables. Set them all to 24 bit 96000 Hz. Should I
also have all the 'Recording' inputs set to that? I show 10 items on that
list, mics, lines, and S/PDIF.
Thanks 73,

Another thing to check / verify; make sure all audio devices are running the
same sampling rate and depth i.e 2 channel, 16 bit, 48,000 Hz.
Mismatches with VAC and sound cards WILL cause significant DPCs (Delayed

[Flexradio] Warning for Touchscreen users

2014-05-28 Thread David W0DHB
The past few mornings I've come into the shack and found all sorts of
strange windows popped up on my Touchscreen monitor.

This morning I came in and Flex 5000 was in transmit (fortunately drive set
at zero).

Some Miller moths had taken a liking to my monitor and their bouncing off
the screen triggered MOX and other windows.

How's that for a bug !

Monitor will now be turned off at night !

2014-05-14 Thread David Movius
Totally agree and well stated Mike.

My introduction to SDR and Flex was about two years ago. I have truly
enjoyed the challenge and learning curves, and have gained a great deal of
respect for FlexRadio staff, support and commitment. I recently graduated
from Flex 5000 to 6700 and have never enjoyed ham radio so much. Flex
radios definitely capture the passion and imagination of many, while there
are many wonderful optional radios out there for others.

I replied to someone offline on this, but you will have multiple views on
this. There are your early adopters (like me) and your 'hanger oners', like
others.

I don't expect it to be perfect at first and may never. I do know it will
be an education and very interesting and we will all learn things. Flex
won't solve everything for everyone and to think otherwise is wrong.

But... the big but...

I trust Flex to do the right thing and to support their customers. The
company is very customer and technology focused and that... is good enough
for me.

The differences for someone that primarily uses digital modes (I know

Many of the reasons stated seem to apply more to someone comparing the
 purchase of a 5000a vs a 6300. If you already have a working 5000a,
the differences are more subtle and he will of course have to decide.

A nice feature, but any benefit depends on whether he has bought and

  - More dynamic range than the 5K means less intermodulation and

  - Wider panadapter bandwidth allows you to see more at a glance
  - Lower TX IMD
  - Much less RF intrusion into the Signature's chassis
Very good reasons if those things are a problem for him. The wider

  Issues:

  - The DSP isn't that much different than PSDR, so it isn't going to
sound much different than your 5K until sometime around the end of

[Flexradio] Noise Reduction??

2014-04-11 Thread David McClain
Hi... wondering if some experts out there can verify...

In playing around with the Flex-3000 and Flex-1500, it appears that the Noise
Reduction (NR) algorithm becomes progressively less effective as the filter
bandwidth becomes narrower. That, in turn, indicates to me that the NR
algorithm is being applied after the narrow-band filtering.

I use these kinds of adaptive LMS filters in audio processing, quite often for
removing the sound of room reverb from poorly made recordings of speeches. The
idea is that you want to use a pseudo-reference made by delaying the signal
just slightly, to effect adaptation and filter tap updates. The reasoning is
that a human voice waveform is highly correlated across time durations much
less than 1 ms, while the room reverb and other white-ish noise in the
recording are not cross-correlated to the speech recording beyond that same
short delay. The adaptive filter removes the uncorrelated portion to a high
degree (typically around 12-20 dB noise reduction).

When you send an audio signal through a narrow filter, you end up increasing
the correlation length of the noise component. You can't be very decorellated
across intervals shorter than about 1/B for bandwidth B, since that is the
approximate duration of the filter impulse response. There are fewer spectral
components in the signal to create a decorellated component, and the
destructive interference results in a wider wave packet.

So it seems that we should be applying the NR adaptive process to audio with
the widest possible bandwidth (narrowest possible noise correlation duration),
and then sending the NR processed wide-band audio through a narrow reception
filter, like the CW 250 Hz filters.

What we seem to getting through things like the CW 250 Hz filters is next to no
noise reduction with NR, and almost no fiddling with the algorithm parameters
to accommodate the narrowed bandwidth seems to help by much. But it works
progressively better as the bandwidth grows wider.

Upon additional investigation it seems that CW Skimmer is stable. That was the
first program I setup to use VAC PAIR 1

My thought was that I could run MMTTY or TrueTTY using the SAME VAC 1 PAIR
thinking the stream handle between PowerSDR and Skimmer would not persist
through a reboot. Just reboot and start MMTTY. I can not run TrueTTY or MMTTY
and keep getting an invalid stream audio whoops something went wrong error from
PowerSDR

Current thought is that I need to define a separate PAIR VAC for each program
because their configuration gets saved to windows registry and my error is
cause by trying to start MMTTY with skimmers VAC.

Can anyone confirm or refute this?

[Flexradio] Trying to buy VAC

2014-04-01 Thread David Gallatin
I apologize if this is considered slightly off topic and yet you gotta have VAC
(I think you must anyway) to run digital w a flex.
Tried from Eugene's site to pay with PayPal. I keep getting an error generated
by Avangate, his CC processor, saying gateway error.
So the other option (which I REALLY do not want to do) is to use my CC on the
Avangate site itself. I googled that firm, having never heard
of it before and came up with long lists of complaints against Avangate.  Now I
figure many of you have bought VAC. If you used the avangate site w no problems
later
please let me know off list or heck if you did have an issue let me know that
too and how easy it was resolved. I am very paranoid about giving my CC info
to sites I don't know and doubly so with someone like Avangate and their list
of complaints. Or maybe you used PP with no problem?

Guys,

I don’t understand why Flex 5000 manual says that, when t using an external

as the “tip” and the “sleeve.,” while for a straight key the “ring is not
connected. Don’t all external keyers just have two conductor outputs,
mimicking a straight key?

And, I assume when using an external keyed, “iambic” is NOT checked.

Can someone explain the cabling from an external keyed to the Flex 5000, and
why it is so?

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 3000 or 5000 Remote operation assistance

2014-02-27 Thread David Movius
Mathew,

In run Flex 5000 via remote using TeamViewer and Skype for the audio link.
Steve's description is essentially the same setup I use and it works
extremely well. I had to fiddle with some of the audio anomalies Steve
mentioned. One set of settings in each Skype account
(SkypeToolsOptionsAudio Settings) was to check the Auto adjust
Microphone and Auto Adjust Speaker... boxes. Others may custom set these
levels, but it seemed to smooth things out for me when those boxes were
checked.

I have looked at RemAud (as mentioned by Steve), but the setup is bit over
my head at this time. With Skype working, I will stick with it for the time
being.

Good luck. Remote operation with the Flex is lots of fun.

Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Flex 3000 or 5000 Remote operation assistance

Mathew-- using Skype for the audio portion of remote operations is pretty
easy. Think of it this way-- you treat the Flex as if it is another person
(account) to Skype, and PowerSDR as the speaker and microphone instead of
the host computer's speaker and microphone.

a. As in all remote audio solutions, you will need virtual audio cables,
software that connects the audio in and out of the Flex to Skype. This link
http://kc.flexradio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50230.aspx
talks about the 3rd party software most of us use, although this software is
now in version 12 I think and the article talks about version 4. The article
is still relevant. Note: there is a trial
version-- don't use this as it will overlay advertising audio on your
transmitted signal! Note 2: you will need this virtual audio cable software
to interface with any of the digital-mode programs as well.

b. Load Skype software onto your host Flex computer and create a separate
skype account for your Flex. I use my call (WA7DUH-Flex). Set up Skype so
it starts with the computer startup (toolsOptionsGeneral). Also so Skype
will only answer those that are in it's contact list and automatically
answers when called (toolsOptionsPrivacy). Go ahead and hook Skype on
your host to your computer speaker and microphone temporarily, establish you
normal Skype account in this new account contact list, etc. That is-- make
sure Skype is fully working person to person and automatically answering,
etc.
before attaching audio to the Flex.

c. With PowerSDR running-- On the Flex host computer's Skype, go to the
audio settings (toolsOptionsGeneralAudio). Change Skype's audio input
from the computer microphone to Audio Out or whatever you named the audio
out channel as discussed in the Knowledgebase article. Change Skype's audio
out from the computer speaker to Audio In or whatever you named the audio
input channel as discussed in the Knowledgebase article.

d. In PowerSDR VAC audio setup (SetupaudioVAC) make sure PowerSDR is
also attached to the appropriate virtual audio cable channels, and set the
audio out to about -20db and the audio in to about -6db. Also on this audio
setup page, I set Allow PTT to override/bypass VAC for phone and Auto
Enable must be off.

Call your Flex Skype account from your remote computer(s). You should have
audio remote. Adjust audio levels in PowerSDR (SetupAudioVAC) from the
starting levels recommended in d. above to suit your particular
configuration. You can also manipulate the audio a bit within the Skype
remote computer.

IMPORTANT CAVEAT-- using Skype for the remote audio has some funky results.
Skype has very complex algorithms to cancel echo and background noise. It
reacts poorly to normal HF static, trying to cancel it etc.
This results in audio level pumping and such. I have Skype always attached
to my PowerSDR as a backup/alternate and for my friends to listen, but I
have moved to RemAUD. But I used Skype exclusively for 3 years, and the
setup is much easier. RemAUD requires router forwarding setups, firewall
setups, etc. to get to work, but is designed specifically for remote
communications audio.

Good luck-- I probably missed some important steps so if you get stuck come
back to the list for help.

[Flexradio] DSP NR

2014-02-23 Thread David Edwards
I have been using the Flex 5K with Win7 64bit running on an i7 with 12 gb
memory for about 5 years now. Have upgraded software at least 4 major revisions
now running v2.7.2 PowerSDR. This is an awsome radio and my best radio.
Currently have 2 other HF radios: IC7800 and TS2000 and have had many Kenwood
and Yaesu radios over the years.

There is one area where the Flex 5K falls down and has not really ever worked.
The DSP noise reduction is useless. Over the years I have not seen any
situation where switching on NR improves the ability to copy a weak signal. The
IC7800 DSP NR is FAR superior. When I purchased the Flex at the Boxborough Ma
hamfest the canned demonstration showed incredible signal improvement using NR.
So I wonder when the NR will ever be improved to at least the usable state.

BTW I’ve tried every conceivable setting on the DSP and Audio config. pages,
have lots of processing power and lots of experience with SDR’s. I work with
the most expensive SDR everyday of the week at my job: The General Dynamics
DMR, at $500K per copy this isn’t comparable but my point is I’m not new to
SDR. That said if I’m missing something I’d like to hear from others who may
have had a different experience. Again I think this is a great radio just not
great DSP NR.

no difficulty achieving 1.0:1 SWR on all bands except 17 meters which is
1.4:1 SWR. Actually, on 80 meters the antenna will tune with SWR 1.0:1
without ATU at resonance.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR and SATPC32

2014-01-02 Thread David W0DHB
Folks

If anyone is interested I've written a program that intercepts CAT commands
from SATPC32 configured as a TS-2000, massages them into Flex PowerSDR CAT
and Passes them on to the Flex Radio.

It was developed primarily for my own use with a Flex-5000 with V/U option
and really streamlines SAT operations.

Please contact me offline if you are interested in giving it a try.

Thanks

Thanks to all for the responses, I was sure the firmware upgrade was necessary.
The message stating looked for v2.1.3.9 found v2.1.3.2 was what confused me.
Thought: Did I not have the latest firmware?. I did find it and manually
upgrade to the later v2.1.3.9, it was in the folder with all the other firmware
not sure why PSDR couldn't find it.

Re: [Flexradio] Important Flex SDR Performance Factors

2013-12-27 Thread David Movius
Craig,

While I have been a knob radio ham for many years, I became intrigued with
SDR about 1 1/2 years ago. Without giving up my knob radio, I thought about
getting a Flex 3000 for starters. Shortly after subscribing to this
reflector, a Flex 5000A came up for sale by a ham who had placed an early
order for the Flex 6000 series radio, so I jumped on his 5000A.

The comments by others up to this point are very applicable in helping make
a good decision. For full disclosure, I am technically challenged with many
of the nuances associated with the broad opportunities available with SDR.
Somewhat out of naivety I jumped into the SDR arena. (I have a bad habit to
go where angels fear to tread)

Bottom line, that decision has without a doubt given me the most fun I have
had in ham radio. There is a learning curve and points of frustration with
the SDR paradigm change, but there is this wonderful community of fellow SDR
enthusiasts who are more than happy to offer assistance and encouragement.
In addition, Neal Campbell has provided invaluable assistance to me (and
many others) getting over a number of hurdles.

Now I am looking forward to soon acquiring one of the new Flex 6000 series
radios. I am hooked on SDR (literally crazy about it), and will never look
back to a radio with knobs. A new or updated radio with each upgraded
iteration of the software is amazing -- at least for me. Support and
service from FlexRadio are also excellent.

You are asking good questions and hopefully you will soon arrive at the
point where your Santa Claus gift can be put to good use.

Cheers and Happy New Year !!

Subject: [Flexradio] Important Flex SDR Performance Factors

Dear Flex Users Group Members,

I have some Christmas money to invest in my first SDR radio. I am very
interested in the hobby aspects of SDR, but I must admit that there is a
certain appeal to old school knobs.

Therefore, the Elecraft KX3 has a certain appeal, but being a newbie, I am
not clear if the Flex 1500 or 3000 offer SDR performance advantages that are
more important considerations. I do understand both systems use the same
SDR software from Flex Radio.

What advice do you have for me on the most important factors that I should
consider in purchasing my first SDR radio?

Thank you,

Re: [Flexradio] How long to upgrade?

2013-12-21 Thread David Fisher
No time at all. I upgraded from 2.6.x to the latest this afternoon in about 10
minutes or so. My setup is very simple, I don’t have it configured for digital
modes (yet). I elected not to import the previous “db”, so that reduced the
chance for error significantly.

Downloaded the installer,

Stopped all processes,

Switched off the radio (5000A)

Ran the installer and let it install everything

This installs the program and the documentation. The docs are in the Program
Files subtree (they really shouldn’t be). I ran off a copy of the release
notes and followed the instructions.

I’m new at amateur radio, and I’m only doing simple things. No problems at all
running the new version.

All,

Normally I am the type of person that likes the latest and greatest software on
everything. I have been gun shy on upgrading my PSDR as after every release, I
sit back and watch the bug reports on the reflector. I am back at 2.3.5. For
the most part it works. Occasionally it starts to oscillate. I have to stop and
restart PSDR and then it goes away. It could be the firewire driver. I have
stuck with the old Firewire driver as moving forward requires me to leave the
legacy Firewire driver and move to the new streaming driver.

Now for my question. In the release notes, are there a step by step procedure
on uninstalling the old software, configuring the new one, such as VAC settings
and the last question. How long has it taken everyone from start to finish to
uninstall the old software, upgrade the firmware and reinstall the new
software? I want to determine the amount of time involved with this process.

I am running a very fast quad core computer with a bunch of memory, low latency
(Thank you Neil) and Win7-64.

Thank you all and Happy Holidays.

described by Alan originally

Went to uninstall PSDRDT and found I had three instances in the programs and
features menu (probably from installing beta releases leading up to 2.7.2)
Uninstalled all 3
Uninstalled PSDR 2.7.2
Uninstalled SDRDataTransfer (Ray's version)
Rebooted
Reinstalled PSD 2.7.2
Did the conversion from 2.6.4 to 2.7.2 (worked fine)
Tried another conversion during the same session , worked now
Closed PSDR DT
Reopen PSDR DT and conversions worked.
Rebooted and was still able to do conversions, no sign of original error

To update, open PowerSDR-DataTransfer and click on the Options button in
the top right hand corner of the program window.

Click on the button Update Setup Data. You should get a message that
your setup data is not up to date and you will be prompted to update it.
Click Yes to update it.

If you have a reliable Internet connection, check the box that says
Automatically check for Updates and then click the Save Changes

From this point forward, when ever you start PowerSDR-DT, it will check
to see if you have the current setup data and program executable and
prompt you to update if you do not.

I just checked mine and noticed the same thing -- three instances of PSDRDT
and three instances of PSDR corresponding to the beta installs and 2.7.2.
The date on the .exe file for PSDRDT was 12/12 which did not correspond to
any of the beta install dates but was probably Ray's last compile.

I think Ray should check to see if a prior instance of PSDRDT exists when a
new one is installed and remove the old one (or at least ask the person
installing).

However this arrangement did not cause me an error as far as I know, but I
think I'll follow Dave's lead and uninstall and reinstall just to make sure.

[Flexradio] uz7ho packet soundcard help

2013-11-08 Thread David Walker

Hi

I am running the UZ7HO packet soundcard program with my flex-3000. I am
decoding packets but I'm unable to connect to stations. I've had a
similar issue with MixW before.

The program outputs to 11025 and I have my flex VAC line set to 11025.

What's the trick?

Regards

Re: [Flexradio] Can't install PSDR on Windows 8.1

2013-10-13 Thread David Fisher
Following up on this -- I hope not prematurely ...

I scrapped my Windows 8.1 system and re-imaged my machine with the Windows 8
system that had been on it previously. This was a stable system.

After getting all the backed up patches installed and verifying the files
against the backups, I tried installing PowerSDR. This time, no problems at
all.

Now all I have to do is learn to use this rig

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions ...

Well, here I am with a new 5000A installation and I’m stuck. I’m running
Windows 8.1 (I know, I know) and I can’t get PowerSDR installed. When it tries
to install the Firewire driver (I knew this would be the hard part), the system
blue screens on a “Memory Management” error. Does it every time.

This is the “beta” W 8.1 - the real bits come out at the end of next week.
This may be a bug in the system, so I may have to sit and wait. Backing up to
an image of the Windows 8 system that was on this computer prior to putting on
W 8.1 is an option -- one I’d rather avoid.

Maybe I should revert to the W8 system anyway. Going forward from there with
the W 8.1 release, when it comes, will be supported, but going forward from the
beta may not.

[Flexradio] Question on newbie involvement with SDR and specifically FlexRadio

2013-09-27 Thread David Getzy
Hi Folks,

This post originally went to the qrp reflector, with the intention of
posting here obviously as well. Medical issues got in the way, and the post
was never sent to this list. I've done a lot of research and got a
tremendous response from folks using FlexRadios on the qrp list, but I'd
like to hear the experience of folks on this specific FlexRadio list as
well. Please feel free to respond on or offline, whatever you feel is most
appropriate and thanks in advance for any advice/information:

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a note requesting input from members of this
list about which FlexRadio would be best for a newbie to SDR to buy. I did
not want to commit to one of the newest radios, due to cost and
unfamiliarity with SDR at this point, although I am somewhat conversant with
computers, computer interfacing with radios, and not adverse to
experimentation and playing around with a system to get it working.

I subsequently ran into a significant medical issue that has kept me offline
for a couple of weeks since. First:

1. I want to thank all of you who replied to my original post, both online
and offline. I received a significant number of responses that gave me
great information on various perspectives of where I should start and what
radios to consider. Included were several individuals who had 5000s, and
were looking to sell them. Again, my apologies for not replying sooner, but
I have not been able to until now- but thanks so much for your
thoughts/philosophy and information on specific radios.

2. I feel that after doing my homework and from the information provided
in response to my initial query, I think that I have settled on looking for
a 5000 radio as a place to start. Most importantly from the responses, it
sounds as if Flex Radio is committed to continued service and firmware
updates of these radios for the foreseeable future- a veryt important issue
for me.

3. It does appear that there are individuals on this list, as well as on E
Bay, and various radio stores that still have 5000s new. I am not adverse
to purchasing a used radio that is in excellent condition and has the
features that I'm looking for (second receiver, transporter options, etc.).

4. My additional questions/requests:
A. Do you have a reason for strongly suggesting trying to find a new 5000
with appropriate options or finding the same radio used. Small cosmetic
defects are not an issue- large gashes or missing power transistors probably
not cool;-).

B. If you do have a 5000 with the options that I'm looking for and the
radio is in excellent working order, I'd be very interested in talking with
you (email offline, etc.). Please contact me at: dge...@gmail.com or
da...@getzy.org at your convenience.

C. Any other suggestions as to necessary (or just helpful) accessories to
consider with the radio, such as: Specific antennas that seem to work well
(I am in a relatively restricted/stealth type area, and so as much as I find
huge antennas aesthetically pleasing, I don't think that a tower is an
option;-), tuners, wattmeters/radio monitoring equipment, microphone or
other audio amplifier components, preamps, anything else?

D. Does anyone have experience running the 5000 series with a 500 watt
linear amp? I am currently using the Elecraft KAP500 and would like to try
and drive it with the 5000 if possible.

E. Any considerations for RFI issues- either produced by the radio or
interference to the radio- and suggestions for ferrite beads or any other
solutions if needed (I realize this is something that is fairly dependent on
my particular set up and will require me getting the radio on the air and
seeing if there are any problems that crop up).

F. I have a fairly decent desktop computer (PC/Windows based) that I put
together, and seems to have all of the requisites that are listed on the
FlexRadio site for computer systems that work well with Flex Radios.
Besides the general recommendations given, are there any other
considerations for components/accessories or anything else on the hardware
side of things to consider?

G. Anything else to consider relative to purchase and use of the 5000
series that I haven't covered (again, I realize I'll probably be able to be
more specific when I get things going in my own shack).

Thanks so much to all of you on this very knowledgeable and civil
reflector/list. Best regards to all.

[Flexradio] FLEX3000 can't get a full 100W output

2013-08-28 Thread David Land
I haven't been paying much attention to my output in the past but have
noticed lately that I don't get a full 100W output on SSB on any band. That
is with a whistle on the input which should drive it to max output. I'm
looking at the 'Fwd Pwr' on the TX Meter which agrees pretty close with an
external BIRD power meter that I have.
So yesterday I hooked her up to a 50ohm 1KW Cantenna to see what each band
would do. It varied from a low of 74 watts on 12 mtrs to a high of 95 on 15
mtrs. Seems like I heard somewhere about some calibration or something you
can do to fix this sort of problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Flexradio] Power SDR Quits!

2013-07-29 Thread David Fisher
You’ll hear lots of ideas about how to clean up a system that has a problem
like this. Some of them may work. But in my opinion your best defense is to
keep a known good system image available. If something, or someone, comes
along and makes a change to your system that causes a problem like this, you
can say to yourself “PowerSDR is more important than yadayadayada” and put the
system back to the way it was at the time of the image.

Windows 7 has a very effective system imaging subsystem that will put away a
copy of your entire system on an external drive for safe keeping. Get into a
jam like this and you simply restore the system to the way it was when it was
working properly. Keep two or three drives around and rotate them once a month
or so.

As for your personal files that might be lost in a system restore, you need a
good backup solution to bridge that gap, but you should have one anyway.

If you have been using the built-in system checkpointing tool, then you may be
able to roll the system back to a checkpoint, if you know the approximate time
when the system became unstable. I’ve had good luck with this too, but when it
really matters, there’s no substitute for re-imaging the hard drive. This is
the way problems like this are handled in the professional computer admin world.

I had a problem similar to this a few months ago when I thought I would be able
to make a change to the way my hard drives were formatted. It worked for a few
days, then the system became unstable. I restored the latest good system image
and that was the end of the problem.

A few things to add to my original post. The operating system is
Windows 7 No issue with blue screens.Power SDR first freezes,
ghosts the screen and then sends a message to close the application.
This happens randomly. It shuts down in the receive mode so rf is not
the issue It has been operating well for the past year or more with
no problems. Virus scans show no problem. He did somehow pick up
OTSHOT (hotshot) some picture sharing junk software which I have not
been able to get rid of completely. It sends several messages when you
boot up.I suspect something is running in the background that
interrupts Power SDR causing it to shut down. As I mentioned previously
I did install Power SDR 2.6.4 with no change in the problem.

My dad was using Power SDR version 2.3. something ... on his Flex
3000. Out of the blue it started to lockup then shut down. The run
period between lockup/shut down varies quite a bit. I thought it might
be an issue with his virus protection software because he had recently
renewed it and had problems installing it. We have cleared up the virus
software problem (Trend Micro) but Power SDR still shuts down. I
upgraded him to version 2.6.4 but we still have the same problem ..
any suggestions?

Re: [Flexradio] USB/RS232 adapter

2013-07-28 Thread David Fisher
I’m as new as can be to ham radio, but I’ve been a computer hobbyist for years.
If I wanted to source a part like this, I would go to Newegg.com, search for
the part and order by best rating. Many of the parts will have no ratings.
Read the reviews for the parts that do, and look for hints suggest this might
not be the one you want.

Parts like this come from a very limited number of suppliers -- markup is very
low -- so name brands don’t mean a lot. But I would expect to see SIIG,
StarTech, SYBA, etc. Not well known names outside of the hobby.

Hope this helps …

 Jim,

You asked, In your opinion when will the 5000 be gone effectively from the

I am not that good at seeing into the future, but I can say the following:

1.) PowerSDR is still going to be developed since it is still needed for
the FLEX-1500 FLEX-3000. As long as PowerSDR is an active development
project, the FLEX-5000 will still be improved.

2.) PowerSDR development will not go away until Flex discontinues both the
FLEX-1500 FLEX-3000. That is not going to happen in the foreseeable
future. To quote someone who is in the know, The FLEX-1500 is selling
 like
hotcakes. Also Flex needs a product in the $1500-$1700 class. Therefore
the future of both radios seems to be assured.

3.) Even when PowerSDR development comes to an end, the FLEX-5000 will
remain a useable radio as long as you can maintain a computer that can run
 PowerSDR.

So, the answer to your question hangs on your definition of effectively
and on factors (such as PC availability) that are outside of Flex's
 control.
I would guess that it is many years away.

Re: [Flexradio] No Broadcast band?

2013-05-06 Thread David Land
More info, should have mentioned, this is a F3K so no antenna selection to
worry about. I've been messing with it more this afternoon. I discovered
that if I turn the preamp to 'attn' it starts to work! Then back to 'off'
and they are still there! Shutdown PSDR and start it back up, same issue,
no receive on most of the AM band until I turn the 'attn' on and back
'off'.
I don't know if this is related but with the preamp 'off' I have a noise
level of -112 dBm (S3), with the 'attn' ON I have a noise level of -95 dBm
(S5+)? Shouldn't the noise level be LOWER with the attenuator ON?
At least I can hear AM Broadcast now but must always do the attn/off
routine each time I re-start PSDR.

[Flexradio] Re V2.6.4

2013-04-16 Thread David Painter
Anyone else seen this behavious in the new version.

Panadaptor appears to stall/pause regularly and momentarily and then resume.
Mouse movements are slow and slow to catch up with movements across the
panadaptor.

Oddest one is that the clock displaying local time (seconds) will freeze for a
few seconds, sometimes for minutes at a time, and the CPU usage will stop at
the same time and then both will resume. The does not seem to be any pattern to
the clock seconds freezing up.

Any Ideas??

Mike et al,

My machine has been runnning, without problem, thru the various iterations of
PSDR for years. Sometime I run it on its own approx 40% CPU, sometimes I run
it streaming BBC/Sky news approx 60% CPU.

The only thing that changed between 8am today and 9am today was installing
v2.6.4 with the new Firewire driver.

Mike, please let me know if Klaus is able to get a fix for you and I'll give it
a shot before buying a new system!!!

  Hi Bob,

Flex Radio have already traced the problem to the new firewire driver, Klaus
at FlexRadio EU Support is waiting for the fix from the US guys.
The US Support guys have replicated the problem.
The PC I use for my Flex3000 only runs PSDR, it does nothing else, it's not
even connected to the internet and no Anti-Virus running either.
All non essential services are disabled under windows, it just runs PSDR,
nothing else.

[Flexradio] WSJT on Flex1500

2013-04-13 Thread David
I have a couple of problems with running WSJT on the transmit side which the
experts may be able to help. I have a Flex1500 which on 50 MHz drives a
Mirage 1016 amplifier to a useful 100 watts output.. The latter is keyed via
a small relay connected to the Flexwire socket. My computer is a Compaq
laptop. On receive, the audio comes from the Flex via VAC1.

My first question is, how do I send the audio from the computer to the Flex.
Is there a way of using VAC2 in a similar way to using VAC1 or do I have to
take the audio out of the computer audio out socket and into the pin 2 of
the flexwire socket.

Second question. How do I automatically key the transmitter on. There is a
break-in facility for CW, but there does not seem to be any sort of VOX
available for SSB and I can not find a way of using any Com port to activate
pin 4 of the Flexwire socket.

Thanks in anticipation.

First, grounding the computer, second adding an rf choke at the wire antenna

Almost forgot - getting the antenna far enough away from the shack too.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000A with vintage transverter = success!

2013-02-28 Thread David
Some time ago I used all three of them. The modules each had their own
little box. They all developed faults in the diode swiching. The other
problem was with the pass transistor which supplied the regulated volts to
the crystal oscillator. This resulted in FMing when you transmitted on SSB
or CW. I still have them, so I may try the 2 metre one out sometime.

In case anyone is looking for a low-cost way to put their 5K on 2M and
70CM, I found that the Yaesu FTV-107R transverter is quite easily
adapted to the task. It covers 144-148 mHz in two switched bands with a
maximum output power of 10W, using an IF of 28-30 mHz. It has repeater
offset capabilities built-in, but I found it's easier to program those
using PowerSDR - fewer switches to keep track of.

[Flexradio] Phase2 Display on Flex-1500

2013-01-08 Thread David McClain
On my Flex-1500 the Phase-2 display always shows up, almost off-screen, in the
upper left of the window pane. I understand that it is showing the raw,
unfiltered, ADC/L and ADC/R. So when I go to the meter to select those two
readings, my Right channel reads about 5-6 dB lower than the left reading --
hence the offset in the Phase 2 display.

Is this something that I should be concerned about? as in send back to the
factory for adjustment? or is it just fine the way it is?

[Flexradio] Any 3K or 5K Flex owners in Milwaukee area?

Hi,

I am having a weird problem with my 3K that recently popped up.

Each time that PTT line is energized the 3K begins to /move up//
//frequency in 100Hz increments/! If I key the radio from the front
panel CW jack or from the drop down CW keyboard panel
_no problem is seen_. This problem occurs at the lowest power
setting and into a 50 ohm dummy load. I am thinking I have
a H/W problem here.

Is there someone in the metro Milwaukee area that wouldn't
mind - if I bring over my 3K, fire-fire cable dummy load and
operate my radio from your PC??? By doing this simple test
I can quickly rule out PC environment problem on my end.

[Flexradio] Out of band transmission

2012-09-14 Thread David Hilton-Jones

I fear I've just made a big mistake. I've been using a SDR1000 for several
years as an IF for VHF transverter use. I decided to upgrade to a Flex-1500
which is of course apparently better designed for the purpose.

But only now that I've spent the money have I realised the major problem. My
70MHz transverter uses a 50MHz LO (10Mhz source x 5) and an IF of 20-21MHz. I
set up the Flex-1500 with ease, only to find that when I try to transmit I get
an out-of-band message, because of course 20MHz is not an amateur band.

I've seen some previous posting suggesting that an answer might be forthcoming,
but haven't seen it.

Have I wasted my money?

Help please.

[Flexradio] Upgrade won't load old Setup?

2012-09-06 Thread David Land
Just finished my upgrade to 2.4.4, went smoothly, no hits, no runs, no
errors. Took about 20 minutes or so with my FLEX3000. But, I can't load my
setup from the 2.3.5 version I had before. The 2.4.4 Release notes say I
should be able to do that. I would like to get all my VAC and CAT and all
those other settings back. I saved the old DB just before I upgraded. What
am I doing wrong?

[Flexradio] V2.4.4 can't get the CAT to work

2012-09-06 Thread David Land
Well, upgraded to 2.4.4 tonight. Got the older 2.3.5 database to import
finally. Most everything is working but can't get Ham Radio Deluxe to
connect to the SDR. I've got it all setup like the wiki said (I think, sure
wish the wiki was back so I could double check that!).

SDR is set to:
Cat Control: enable CAT
Port COM15
Baud 57600
Parity none
Data 8
Stop 1

PTT Control enable
ID as PowerSDR

HRD is set as:
Company FlexRadio
Radio PowerSDR
Com Port COM5
Speed 57600

It won't connect...

The 5000a is not discontinued. If you aren't sure, go to the Flex website
store and you will see that you can still buy a Flex 5000a. It is right there
on the front of the web site with a Buy Now button still prominently
displayed.

Good for you Brian,

Fortunately, organisations like the Federal Trade Commission and Texas Attorney
Generals office exist protect the interests of consumers who don't have the
benefit of your inside knowledge.

Flex doesn't need me or anyone else for that matter to hurt them. My in box is
testament to the vast swathes of customers who Flex has alienated (shafted is a
common term) by the promises made year after year and their faillure to deliver
on their promises year after year. Trust and confidence are vital to the
success of any business...for many people Flex have blown that away.

the major question is, What is your point? What is it that you hope to
accomplish? Are you hoping to punish Gerald? Are you hoping to hurt Flex
somehow? Are you hoping to help the rest of us who are too stupid to realize
how malevolent/stupid Flex is?

We are all big boys (and girls) here. Many of us have owned Flex products. We
are walking into this with our eyes open. I know that I don't really need your
help in this area. I am well aware of what has been promised and what has been
delivered. I even have a pretty good idea what was and is wrong. I understand
why Flex never delivered on its rewrite of PowerSDR and I also understand why
Flex has stuck with PowerSDR even given its limitations. I also understand how
the new architecture of the 6x00 series is different and how that is going to
change how they develop software for it and why that is likely to produce a
product that is far more flexible and extensible than their previous products
were/are.

I guess what I am saying here in a nutshell is, Thank you for your concern
but I don't really need your help.

[Flexradio] PowerSDR display problems on TV

2012-07-01 Thread David Walker

Hi,

I've installed PowerSDR on my PC connected to our 40 TV. The PowerSDR
objects are displaced and buttons are showing 1.5 buttons and the
function objects are overlapping other objects. So in short, it's all
higgledy-piggidy.

I'm using WIn7 x 64 and a AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series graphics card.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Dave.

[Flexradio] Vista can't find SDR fire wire driver during install

2012-06-28 Thread David Garnier

Hi,

I just bought a new PC with Vista Business 32 bit with SP-2 installed on it.
_Note_. I am new to Vista and I think I have administrator privileges!

At this point (of my lovely adventure into the O/S called Vista,) the
fire wire 400 card is already installed, device mangler reports that
TI's IEEE 1394 driver is alreadly installed and there's no conflicts.

Problem. During the installation of Power SDR 2.3.5 package,
the install process cannot find Flex's Fire Wire driver on the CD.
OK, what is the name of this driver and where can it be found?

Couple weeks ago XP found Flex's Fire Wire driver on the CD,
so what gives?

Thanks guys.
