 Most email clients allow 'Filtering'

I personally filter FlexEdge into it's own subfolder, and FlexRadio into

No reason you can't employ a filter such as 'if subject or body contain

I don't seem to have that problem here, I don't have a delay.
Or at least I don't notice it.
Could that be a function of the speed/version of your computer?

Maybe one of the Gurus can address that for you.

Congrats on your big showing in the contest.

More than once I inadvertently have mouse clicked and lost a 'RUN'
frequency.

I agree a 'Full Lock' button would be advantageous during a contest.
I sort of get around it, but using the 'SAVE' and 'RESTORE' buttons.
When I get a run going I click the 'SAVE' button to correct any of
my fat finger, sleepy eyed mistakes.

I'm not sure what you mean by a 'Monitor'.
Are you saying that you couldn't hear your own voice transmissions?

Hope to work you in the next contest.

[Flexradio] maybe the lightning/power surge took out my front end???

2010-06-23 Thread FireBrick

Major storms hit Chicago area, but no lightning close by.
I think it effected my Flex5K.

A substation near me got hit, big time. Son was driving by when it lit
up he said.

Not sure it was lightning or blow out due to lines being down elsewhere.
That knocked out my power for a moment, but computers were on APC's.
Even though my cable modem and router were on their own APC, I had to
cycle them to get them back online.

Rig was on house power.
Obviously too dark to check antenna, but problem seems to be on all
antennas.

The noisefloor is now below -130, normally my noise floor is approx. -120
With the preamp enabled, the noise floor is much below normal
If I disable the preamp the noise floor is at -130 but I can't hear a signal
enable the preamp and the noise floor goes to -140 and the signal pops in.

The rig 'seems' to have normal power output.

The noise floor is the same for both receivers
Could a surge take out both receivers???

Ok guys, what do I test for?

the subject and there are several excellent articles in our Knowledge
Base.

Before I designed the SDR-1000, I bought a FT-847, which I still own. I
had
it connected to a copper rod above the desk through 1/2" copper braid,
which

I later learned is very inductive. Inductance on a ground is not a good
thing. I used 1" braid to go from the copper pipe through PVC conduit to
the outside where it connected to a "single point" ground system with 2"
copper strap to ground.

After running that setup for awhile at 100W, all of a sudden I could not
run

the radio above 50W without going to full RF feedback. If I stayed below
50W it was fine but above that, it would pin the meter. This went on for
some time because I was busy and did not have time to diagnose. Later for
who knows what reason, it just quit having the RFI problem.

Now I run a FLEX-5000 with a FireWire cable that is not as good as the one
we ship today. The radio is across the room from the wall conduit to the
outside

Of course Dave is correct.
As I said, I was limited to the pTT com port choices available in the
contest program, and to make it uniform through my system so I didn't have
to change port assignments as I switched programs, I chose a number that was
possible with all programs.

So no matter what mode, or what program, ptt is always com 8.

Oh Howard
I forgot to tell you.
When you create a virtual com port pair.
I suggest that you choose one 'low' number and one 'high' number.

Most of the legacy software, logging, contest, MMTTY etc.
don't provide for
high numbers.
If you look in their dropdown lists, they rarely go very high, a holdover
from the old hard wired com port days.
So for older software, I suggest using a low number.
PSDR and most modern software will let you use high number.

Hence my use of 8 for ptt in all my progrms and 22 for ptt control in
PSDR.

One of the big contest programs only allows a number up to 8 which is why
I

chose that combo.

Re: [Flexradio] mmtty on the flex

2010-04-17 Thread FireBrick

In the MMTTY>Setup>TX, what com port do you have for PTT&FSK?

you need a virtual com port pair with the other end of the pair set up tin
the Flex>SDRSetup>CatControl panel for PTT Control.

For instance, my VSPE (virtual com port pair) is 8<>22
So MMTTY PTT panel is set to com 8, and PSDR Cat Control PTT Control panel
ie enabled and the Port is com22.

you need to tell the Flex to go into transmit mode via the PTT port.

Hope this helps

Re: [Flexradio] MS Patches - now 1.18.5 getting exception after pressing Start

2010-04-17 Thread FireBrick

Dan
Did you do a "Restore Point" before those updates?
Usually MS will do one automatically prior to Updates.
Reverting those updates may fix your problem.

Start>Accessories>System Tools> System Restore>Restore my computer to an
earlier time>Next

then pick a date/restore set that you know was working.

Good luck, been dere done dat, and I run two automatic Restore points a day.

Re: [Flexradio] Keeping FireWire cable securely attached to FLEX-3000

2009-12-17 Thread FireBrick

same problem here
how I fixed it
fortunately my firewire connector on the computer was in the clear.
I bought a "Command" glue on tab.
Those are those little 3M products you see in the hardware store.
It has a glue on strip, that peels off when you don't need it.
anyway
I put one on the computer just above the Firewire cable/connector
they used a wire tie, through the tab on the Command plastic and around the
FW cable.

No more fall out...

I also use the Command type cable holders for other cables.
These look like a crabs front claws.
With little plastic that encircle a cable and then slip into a hook.

Nice part about these, when you pull the tab, the glue strip is removed and
leaves no marks or residue.

The bracket can be reused but requires a new glue strip.

Every few days, I find my computer cannot find my FLEX-3000. I find that
the FireWire cable (the one that came with my FLEX-3000) has worked its
way slightly out of the connector. Pushing it back in cures the problem.

The cable is hanging freely from the back of the 3000 to the floor, about
a meter. It has no retainer clips or screws like the good ol' days of
DB-25. Modern connectors like FireWire, HDMI, etc. have no retainers.

Is there a clever way of securing the cable to its socket?

Re: [Flexradio] Flex in contesting

you don't need two radio with N1MM
In factit may be darn near imposible.
N1MM will only accept (I think it's 8) com ports.
They do not have any provision for com ports higher than that.

As you must use 'virtual com ports', that's already 4 pairs.
So that may be a deal breaker.

But as using the RX2 as the second radio, it bypasses the com port issue.
I contest with a F5K
but I'm old and slow so one radio is almost too much.
but I have set it up just to try it.

I got it working...to a degree, but never really tried to do it seriously.

I have the following 3 questions:
1. How do you connect 2 radios to N1MM? What kind of hardware do you need?
Seems to me that running one radio + N1MM is a no brainer as I can create
virtual sound and comm ports that N1MM can use. But what about a second

2. It seems that TX OUT can be selected on a per overall system basis, but
not on a per receiver- e.g. ANT1 for TX/RX1 and ANT2 for TX/RX2. Am I
missing something? The idea is to have a different antenna for
transmitting on the frequency of each receiver so that I can have 2
amplifiers, 2 sets of antennas, etc.
3. From user interface perspective, how do you handle using the contest

always related to the foremost application; changing the focus moves the
mouse and keyboard to the other application. So I can either use the

[Flexradio] The wall of Isolators

2009-11-23 Thread FireBrick

Funny that Lloyd would write about Isolators.
I just finished this afternoon,

"My wall of isolation"

Hope this comes through.
www.qsl.net/w9ol/Isolators.jpg

Top is for the yagi
2nd is for a 30 meter rotatable dipole (I modified a Hy-Gain 40 driven el)
Bottom is for the 80/40 shortened dipole
There is one more line, for 6 meters, and it has a isolator on it also.
It's on the back wall.
That rg58 is just for a vhf/uhf handi talky I use for monitoring the
Search&Rescue link.

The progression is: Vector Analysis pickup, isolator, Low Pass Filters.
I would have liked the isolators on the antenna cable end.
But mechanically supporting them would have been tough.
The LP Filters had screw holes.

Now I must admit I do stick torroids on control cables.
Figure can't hurt.
My tower is less that 3 feet from that last Low Pass Filter. Just outside
the wall.
60feet above the shack.
So I'm in the near field.

I went to the Antenna Selection system which is set to Expert.

all three relay ports and the chatter did NOT return.

Probably...that rfi I was trying to solve did something even though I

Re: [Flexradio] Problem with 1.18.3 and VAC

2009-10-21 Thread FireBrick

I don't claim to be an expert on this but...
I can't see why it would work with .2 and not .3

UNLESS
You do NOT have the VAC setup exactly the same.

My first guess is that you have the incorrect MMTTY sound card setting.
If PWSDR VAC is set so:
Input is VAC 1
and
Output is VAC 2

Then in MMTTY or any other front end for digital they must be the OPPOSITE.
MMTTY's terminology is slightly different
They call the signal coming FROM the Flex "RECEPTION"
And this should be what PWSDR calls VAC OUTPUT

and MMTTY calls the sounds goint to the radio (PWSDR) Transmission
Which PWSDR refers to it as Input.

I've goofed that up a few times myself.

The only other thing I can think of is that in MMTTY MISC tab, the TX Port
setting.

In my case it's set to 'Sound'.

But why that would be an issue with .3 and not version .2, I can't answer.

Good luck and you could just for kicks, tell VAC to create 2 additional VAC
lines.

VAC 3 and VAC 4
and use 3 and 4 with the presently non working version .3 and see if that
makes a difference.

Subject: [Flexradio] Problem with 1.18.3 and VAC

I recently did my first F5K upgrade of PSDR, FireWire, and firmware from
1.18.2 to 1.18.3. I did a DB reset after the upgrade. I thought all was
well
until I tried to operate using one of my digital mode programs. I found
that

I could transmit but I could not get any audio from the F5K back into the
digital program. By that I mean that the CAT was working to key the
transmitter and audio was being sent from the digital program to the F5K
but

no receive audio was making it to the digital program. It was like VAC had
become a one way connection. When I switched back to 1.18.2 everything
works

normally. The VAC control panel looks the same with both PSDR versions. I
tried several digital programs (fldigi, Digipan, MMTTY - that all work on
1.18.2) and they all have the same problem. So I don't know if I have a
VAC

problem or a PSDR problem.

Anyone have any ideas? Looks like I'm stuck on 1.18.2 for now.

[Flexradio] RFI

2009-10-11 Thread FireBrick

As one who has been married 47 years (to the same lady).
I can say that RFI is like a 'wife'.

You can never predict when it's 'Dark Side' will appear.
What worked to appease the 'Dark Side' on Monday will fail on Tuesday.
the 'Dark Side' will appear at the most inopportune time.
The 'Dark Side' can have more than a single cause.
Multiple causes result in exponential expense to resolve.

It's prophetic that 'Grafite' cables can cure RFI.
As graphite is carbon.
As DIAMONDS are also carbon.

Graphite has cured rfi
Diamonds 'can' cure 'Dark Side'.

Do they make a 'Diamond' firewire cable?

[Flexradio] HotWheels Start Up Fix

2009-10-05 Thread FireBrick

For those having trouble with HotWheels, Sami's mouse wheel vfo applet.

Change the line in the HotWheels cfg file.
(simple Notepad edit will work)

In the line
WIN FlexRadio Systems (TM) yada yada
delete everything AFTER 'Systems'.

HotWheels reads/looks for the PWSDR Title line
As the cfg command line doesn't have the TM symbol, it fails.
The addition of the TM symbol to the PWSDR title line a few months back is
the reason.

I tried looking up the ascii code for the exponent style TM but couldn't get
that to work.
It may not be ascii but one of the other types of code.

Unfortunately, I had to leave home early this morning and won't

Re: [Flexradio] 5000A CW

2009-10-04 Thread FireBrick

first try this.
Turn down the drive to minimum.
So that you have basically no power going out.
If the display jumping is lessened or stable
I would suspect RFI.

Make sure your grounded, and all components, rig, antenna switches,
amplifiers, and power supply are all grounded together with as wide a copper
strap as possible.

(wide strap is always better than wire)
Single point ground is better than multiple ground connections.

My suspicion is that rf is getting into the keying line/computer.
Is the WinKey a USB unit?
torroids on the USB cable from the computer and wires to the rig may help.

I always joke that the total weight of my Flex/PowerSupply/Computer is only
exceeded by the total weight of ground straps, audio transformers and
torroidal rfi suppessors.

It's not a knock on Flex, every previous radio was subject to RFI due to my
close proximity to antenna.

For Instance
In PWSDR VAC is set to:
Driver: Windows WDM-KS
Input: VAC 1
Output: VAC 2

In WinWarbler, Soundcard is set to VAC
But Transmission goes to VAC input which is PWSDR VAC1
RTTY Reception goes to VAC output which is PWSDR VAC2
In MMTTY setup, TX is set to PTT&FSK com port Com8
This requires a com0com pair of com 22 equals com 8
With PWSDR Cat Control PTT being set to com 22

If just using MMTTY in a standalone system. I'm using MMTTY version 1.66G.
Again Soundcard Reception is VAC2 and Soundcard Transmission is VAC1.
And on the TX tab, PTT&FSK is the same, set to com8.

Using Writelog, you need the MMTTY module, same setup.
Using N1mm, again, same soundcard, same com port.

Good luck, contact me offlist if you need help.

[Flexradio] Looking for suggestion about a rtty starting anomaly

2009-09-22 Thread FireBrick

Ok guys, this is not a Flex problem but apparently somthing with my system.
Symptom;
PWSDR working with MMTTY to send rtty.
If I strike the macro key, it's starts instantly sending that macrol
But
The longer I listen befoe the next macro key strike, a delay will be
introduced between the key strike and the diddle beginning.

In other words, I call a DX station but he answers someone else.
The next time I call him, the time between the macro key strike and the
commencement of rtty signal will increase.

It's not long but definetly detectable.
The more times I call, then listen, the longer this delay becomes.

I've tried different virtual com port programs.
I've tried different programs to manage the rtty operation.
I've used different instances of MMTTY from different directories.

It was EXTREMELY apparent this afternoon as I tried to work FT5GA on 20
meter RTTY.

Cure;
Simply shutting down PWSDR and restarting eliminated the delay between Key
strike and diddle beginning.

I've experienced this with various versions of PWSDR, firmware and drivers.
Currently using:
PWSDR Test Branch, svn 3377, Firmware 2.0.0.0, Driver 3.4.2.6300, Latest
version of VAC.

My DPC's are minimal,
And there is no delay using the same system to send CW either via WinWarbler
or Flex internal keyer and direct from paddles.

Only with RTTY, does this strange increasing delay exhibit it'self.

It's my system, looking for suggestions...

please and thank you.

Subject: [Flexradio] Flex 3000 with Micro-Ham (or any other ) band
decoderquestion

My station has a lot of automation built-in that is very helpful in
contests. At the heart of most of the automation is a MicroHam band decoder,
that gets it's data from the computer and passes it back to my K3 via a
serial port for band/mode changes. It also passes it's output(via a 25 pin
connector) to a remote antenna switch that chooses the correct antenna for
the band.
I have my Flex-3000 running from a laptop that actually has a real serial
port.

Anyone set up a 3000 to communicate with an external band-decoder?
Thanks in advance,
Tad, WF4W

[Flexradio] PWSDR and CWSkimmer and DXLabs SpotCollector

2009-09-11 Thread FireBrick
In my system, I've found that WDM provides a better signal for CWSkimmer to
decode.

But to use WDM, you should make a change to the VAC setup.
WDM prefers 'Cable range' to 'Cable format'.

I can see a distinct improvement in the scrolling cw in the CWSkimmer
waterfall. It's sharper, brighter, and simply decodes a bit better.
In fact it's distinct enough that I've started to learn to decode the
dot/dash scrolling display.
Remember, CWS is NOT a code reader. It just detect callsigns and displays
them on a frequency bandmap. Just as blips on your PWSDR panadaptor display
cw signals, CWSkimmer puts a callsign onto the blip.

There is another advantage to using CWSkimmer, For those using the DXLabs
Spot Collector, callsigns decoded by CWS can be added to SpotCollector via
CWSkimmers internal telnet.
So if your a DXer, and can use 192kHz, CWSkimmer and SpotCollector can watch
the band and alert you to a needed band/mode.

Adding CWS to your online system does take more cpu.
In my case it's adds approx. 20% to the total cpu load.
But running PWSDR in 192 mode, full DXL suite, DDUt, SpotSpy, and VE7CC
telnet my cpu load is still under 70%. In a heavy contest situation, that
increases a bit more.

If anyone needs help, feel free to contact me offlist.

There are a number of Flex, DDUt, Quadra users.
DDUt serves as the bridge between the Flex and Quadra.

Actually you don't use the stock interface cable, With DDUt, you canabalize
an old printer cable, use a lpt port or lpt card and by setting DDUt
properly, you will end up with a 1 KW SDR tranceiver.

(of course you can also work in barefoot mode, but life is too short for

Re: [Flexradio] wireless mouse roller wheel and powersdr tuning...

2009-09-01 Thread FireBrick

Jim
Are you saying that using HotWheels, you must rotate the mouse wheel through
many revolutions to see any frequency change?

The amount of frequency change is related to the Tune Step Choice.
If the Tune Step is 1 Hz, then a rotation of the mouse wheel changes the
farthest right digit (red) in VFOA.

Changing to the next Tune Step, 10 Hz, the next Tune Step choice is 50Hz,
and the next choice, 100Hz will change the farthest left Red number (100Hz)
in VFOA.

One other factor may be the Mouse Wheel setting. Most mouse software have an
option as to how many 'lines' each mouse wheel increments will advance on
the screen.

Thank you. I read the articles on HotWheels. Oddly even though I searched
for hotwheel the articles were not found I had to search for wheel to find
them.

What I found is that my mouse wheel is affecting the powersdr frequency
display but in an odd way.

I have to rotate the mouse wheel many times before any change in frequency
occurs and then it is only affecting the 1khz place in the frequency
display. I tried adjusting the mouse control panel wheel setting for
vertical and horizontal scrolling sensitivity but that did nothing.

Any other thoughts about this?
Thanks very much

Jim your Wireless mouse shoulld work as long as PWSDR has 'Focus'.

Each wheel click will change frequency in relation to the Tune Step

you have chosen.

But if you move the Focus to a logging program or whatever, it will no
longer work
Unless you download the free MouseWheels utility.
When installed, and enabled the Mouse Wheel will always adjust vfoA.

Look up the url in the KB, search for HotWheels.

A very nice plague from the Staff at Flexradio.

Sort of appropriate that the plaque used an image of the 'Slinky' as my

Got my Morse Code and Radio merit badges...with that receiver/antenna.

with PTT = Pin 5 function

Digital mode is MMTTY using com 8 which is the other end of Flex PTT port 22

Now I have not tried sending SSB buffers, but I can confirm that the above
setup works for cw and digital using PWSDR, DDUt, and N1MM

hope this helps.

the applications behave as expected with vCom providing the linkage.

However,
I've been unable to figure out how to run skimmer and the
logger at the same time so that they are both interacting with

Has anyone out there figured out how to run skimmer and the N1MM

I'd appreciate any pointers.

In this case, a knob, or dedicated vfo control device such as the

[Flexradio] Team Flexonia NAQP score

2009-07-19 Thread FireBrick

I 'think' this was the first time Flex had a team in NAQP-RTTY.
" Next chance will be NAQP CW, first full weekend in August followed by SSB
the third full weekend in August "

Score looks like
311 qsos
82 sec
2 non NA
26, 124 points
will submit as soon as I figure out how N1MM does that.

Conditions were a tad on the bad side.
First rtty contest using N1MM and slow going at first
many typos.
many wrong buffer keys requiring ESC and do over's.
But finally got a rhythm going and had a decent 'Rate' the last few hours
considering conditions.

Funny conditions. I'd get a reply, s7, and half way through the exchange
they would disappear.
Strange.

First time ever in 40 years of contesting I was actually called "BY" W1AW
and his name used.it was HPM himself.

[Flexradio] Flexonians in NAQP

I don't know about the other fellows on the team.
But I'm dying. I can't remember conditions this bad.
Such rapid qsb, a s8 replying signal fades out halfway through the exchange.
Never to be heard from again.

Now most of us living in the Black hole of northern Mississippi valley are
used to it. But today is really bad.

Break over...back to it.

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] SVN

2009-07-14 Thread FireBrick

What I meant was that I play mostly with the 'TEST' vesion.
And to be safe during a contest, I usually use the 'TRUNK' version.

The TRUNK version is one step from the Official Release verson.
Almost all the newer versions have been well tested and generally safe.

So I have two icons on my desktop.
'Trunk' for contesting where a crash would loose time.
'Test' for general playing, testing, and learning how the newer features
interact.

I've looked at 'Pretty Betty' but not so interested in 'looks'.

When 'Diversity' get a bit more 'understandable' I'll play with it just so I
have an idea what they gurus are talking about.
It could be a deal breaker in a super weak DX contact, but that will remain
to be seen.

Each of the different versions have special issues.
Each has some special application that eventually will become part of the
'never final' version.
I may never use/learn/understand how to use them all, and probably by the
time I do, they will be obsolete as those guys in Texas wake up each morning
and say 'hey if we connect etc. etc. etc.' and run to their development
computer.

You bought the only radio that if you walk away from it for a day, when you
come back to it, it will play better than it did than when you left it.

Mine is no where near what it was when I bought it.
and by contamination, I actually learned a thing or two...
(mostly by making mistakes and needing help to fix them).

Whatever you like to do, contest, dx, rag chew, listen to Bavarian Opera.
Do it..and twiddle with the settings, it's a living toy, play it!

So telling you which version to use...no can do...play with them, something
will make you say 'hey that's neat!'

just do a SVN update and it will update all versions except the official
RElease version, v1.18.2.

It's not uncommon for there to be multiple upgrades every day.

Butremember this:
Some of the svns require recalibration as the way they work is different
from other versions.
Some have .mdb files and other use the newer .xml database structure.

I tend to stick to the 'TEST' svn and 'Trunk' svn
too hard to keep all the different concurrent changes straight in your
head.

Any other Flex contesters eager to compete? Or will Team Flexonia be the
high scorer? LOL

Just a tip for any other Flex rtty who wish to contest.
Make sure you have the offset enabled on the CAT setup page.
Enter 2125 into the DIGL box and enable for both VFO's
(most people use lsb (DIGL) for afsk
That will allow cluster spots and cluster jumps to be right on frequency of
the station you need or spot and you won't have to do the math each time.

Re: [Flexradio] [SMC] naqp teams

2009-07-14 Thread FireBrick

I just finished reading the rules myself again and figured it out.
Too many contests, too many different rules. LOL

"Team Competition: You may wish to form a team with fellow NAQP
participants. If so, your team must consist of 2 to 5 single operator
stations whose individual scores are combined to produce a team score.
Although clubs or other groups having more than 5 members may form multiple
teams, there is no distance or meeting requirements for a team entry.

Teams must be registered prior to the start of the contest. Use one of the
following on-line forms to register your team:

RTTY Team Registration: Registration Form"

So basically I think we have 4 right now
Ray K9DUR k9...@rnacs.com
Bill W9OL w...@billnjudy.com
Jerry W4UK jefland...@comcast.net
and
Ray??? rkola...@neb.rr.com (Ray I forgot your call)

I hope there is one more Flexonian out there who can operate a bit and fill
that 5ths spot.

If we get that fifth contributor I'll pass it on to Peter who will registers
us as a Flexonian NAQP rtty team.

a club, just a group of 5 participants. Of course, it would be great if
we
could sign them up as out-of-circle members.
