Bill:

Happy Monday!

The FLEX-6300 has a fully functional transverter (XVTR) port for use with
external transverter equipment. Typically, a 28MHz common IF is used to
interface to the unit. Additionally, the FLEX-6300 supports a TX-OUT line
to key the transverter. Lastly, the SmartSDR software has a setup function
that will automatically translate the frequency display while in XVTR
mode so your SmartSDR display will appear on the proper frequency while
using transverters.

Good luck on your project.

The 1000 was running fine on 2.5.3. went to use the radio today
and once it goes thur its boot and you click the on button on powersdr the
 radio
goes into transmit and have to shut it down. also reads hi swr even though a

what I did, checked all connections on the radio,FA-66 and the

 are correct.
thought maybe the software was corrupted ,so cleaned house and removed all
 the
flex and all the power sdr files and did a clean reinstall of 2.5.3. install
went as it should. re booted the system and the same result ,instant transmit

 hi swr.
When power sdr is booting, there is NO relay noise from the 1000 at all
,listened twice to be sure, nothing. used to hear relays clicking in or out.
Tried every thing with a older powersdr, same thing.
Any one have any ideas as to what is going on or how to correct it.Iam

 Hello Dale,

It happened to me twice, one was due to the parallel port connector
partially disengaged. The other was due a bad soldered wire in the same
cable. If the connector is not fully engaged, the radio goes into transmit.
If the parallel port connection is ok, try reseating the boards stack,
 these connector sometimes fail.

 Dear Neal,

 Rant Mode
I am sure your service is worthwhile and I am sure you can be helpful but
I do not like the suggestion that we pay for support which should come from
Flex. Their concentration on the new radios tends to leave those of us
with legacy radio to fend for ourselves and that is what Bill and Jerry and
you can include me are trying to do. Each individual should not need to
pay for this information it should be available to the PowerSDR users in
general. Now if someone needs help in getting that information implemented
then your paid service would be desirable. If you have this information
such that you could contribute a KB to Flex and advise your availability to
implement it, than I am fine with that.

Yes, I once had WSJT (JT-65A) working, but that was two computers ago.
 I've
even made one six meter ENE contact and been heard by several stations.
 With
W7GJ now at KH8, I'd like to try to work him. But, without WSJY, VAC and
Power SDR working together, there's no chance.

I do have VAC installed and the latest Released version of WSJT as well
 as
VSP manager. So, I don't need instructions on downloading and installing
same. The OLD Knowledge Center article that I printed out a year or two
 ago,
spends a lot of verbiage on downloading and installing these programs. It
talks about installing VAC into Power SDR Version 1.14.0. That's how old
 it
 is.

One of things it says it to make sure that Flex 5000 Firewire device
 driver
is set to the same parameters and Safe Mode 1 is the operating mode. It
refers to another Knowledge Center article to explain how to do this.

Going to the Flex Website, I find no place to find Knowledge Center
 articles
anymore. Has the Knowledge Center been done away with? I did find a
 so-called White Paper entitled

LEVERAGING SDR FOR BETTER DIGITAL MODE COMMUNICATIONS. But it is
 nothing
but a sales pitch for software defined radio and VAC. I don't need a
 sales
pitch. I'm already convinced re SDR and have been for years..

What I need is a good up-to-date step-by-step description of what
 parameters
to set into Power SDR, VAC and WSJT. At the moment, I'm getting an ERROR
message in WSJT saying Error in opening audio channels and some other
stuff that says it won't work.

I DID have the audio stream running normally an hour or so back, but I've
 obviously messed it up now.

 Frustrated,

 Bill Tynan, W3XO/5 EM00kd

Re: [Flexradio] Pwr Sdr 2.7.2 driver

2014-06-02 Thread Greg Jurrens
Mike
Sorry you are fighting dragons. I've seen this before after a
cleaning. Something in the Microsoft or Flex driver stack gets
un-stacked. I would suggest you try manually cycling the Firewire board
driver from whatever it is to LEGACY.
1. Go to Device Manager
2.Left click on the line IEEE 1394 HOST CONTROLLERS
3. Right click on the dirver. Mine is set to 1394 OHCI COMPLIANT HOST
CONTROLLER
4. Left click Update Driver Software
5. Left Click Browse my computer for driver software
6. Left Click Let me choose from a List.
You will then be presented with typically 3 choices. Choose another driver
other than what was installed. Then click NEXT and follow the
instructions. If you weren't on LEGACY, choose that one. If you were,
then choose another and let it finish.
7. Reboot
8. If needed repeat the process to get to LEGACY.
9. Reboot.
10. Try that. If that doesn't get you there, then it's likely the actual
FlexRadio driver set didn't get reinstalled properly. This is a bit more
complex than I can type here so I'd suggest you open a ticket at
http://helpdesk.flexradio.com and get one of the guys to walk you through
it.

Good luck!

[Flexradio] Fwd: Flex radios are the worst polluters ??

From: Greg Jurrens g...@flexradio.com

Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Flex radios are the worst polluters ??
To: John Kramer jkra...@iafrica.com

John:

This set of complaints has been rattling around for several years now.
Here are FlexRadio's comments on the DUBUS article by SM5BSZ:

1. FlexRadio is very much aware of Leif SM5BSZ's report and his ongoing
concerns regarding FlexRadio's Direct Conversion IQ-based software defined
radios. He has shared his concerns with us and in public for several years.
2. The noise he refers to is an artifact of the Delta-Sigma CODECs used
to generate the baseband signals. These CODECs were originally designed
for the audio domain and attain very high dynamic range by modulating the
noise outside of the audio passband. In this case, it's approximately
300kHz away from DC. This noise would appear to look similar to the
transmit phase noise of most all transmitters.
3. We believe Leif's measurements are basically accurate and have verified
them in our lab using our test equipment.
4. Using Leif's own measurements, the worst case signal generated is
82dBc, or 82dB BELOW the carrier. The FCC and CE require all spurious and
unintentional signals to be at least 43dBc. We are 40dB BELOW the legal
requirements so there is no issue there. At 5Watts full scale output for
the FLEX-1500, the resulting signal is 0.0316 microwatts! Even if you
drive an amplifier to full legal limit with your FLEX-1500, the result
would only be 10 microwatts.
5. While measurable using sophisticated test equipment, we do not believe
that under normal real-world operating conditions this noise will ever be
perceived by other operators on the band - other than those hams within
site of your tower. On a FLEX-5000A driving a full-legal limit PA, If
the 5000A is transmitting on 14.349USB, a person trying to work CW at
14.001 a 1 S-unit rise in the noise floor at about a mile away BUT
Only if you are in a quiet rural location that the environmental noise
floor doesn't obscure it.
6. Time marches on and so does technology. Our new FLEX-6000 Series uses
Direct Up Conversion technology for generating the transmitted signal.
Because it's DUC, the only thing you need to worry about is the Phase
Noise of the master oscillator. In our case, the oscillator is better than
-140dBc/Hz at 2kHZ from the carrier! At 50kHz from the carrier its
better than -150dBc/Hz. Very quiet indeed! This just isn't a problem on
the new radios.

Punch Line: Yes, there is a lab measurable noise hump at about 350kHz on
the FLEX-1500, FLEX-3000, and FLEX-5000. No, we don't believe it's a
problem in the real world unless you are trying to run Multi-Multi or a
stack of FLEX-3000/5000s at Field Day on the same band. The new FLEX-6000
Signature Series employs a DUC transmitter and does not exhibit this noise.

John, I hope this puts your mind to ease. You have no fear of being
arrested by the NOISE POLICE for using your FLEX-1500,3000, or 5000 radio.
We just hope that people would spend less time transmitting into expensive
spectrum analyzers and more time re-discovering radio by transmitting on
the air.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex radios rj 45 adapter

2014-03-31 Thread Greg Jurrens
Dale:

I agree this method works most always. Just FYI, the way that Ethernet is
pinned out, it does not create the twisted pair common mode rejection that
you might expect. If you'll look at the ends of your cable you will see
that the pinout doesn't match pairs with ground. It won't hurt anything
but it also doesn't provide any protection against common-mode problems.

Every cat five cable will make two adapter cables. Oh you are worried

You save a lot of money, have a adapter the length you want and have the

 IC-756 Pro3, a Flex 5000A and a Flex 6700

I definitely prefer the Radiosports over ALL other headsets.. they are very
comfortable especially during a long contest or DX session.
They cut out the background noise much better than my so called Noise
 Cancelling Heil junk...
 Receive audio quality is excellent
They are perhaps the best constructed headsets I own

I get superb audio reports on my Radiosports... I have tried various
different elements...I think currently my favorite is the 205 I do not use
the PTT button but only VOX as the isolation is excellent...

Another writer is correct to some extent in that the Flex has a 10 Band
equalizer which mitigates somewhat the quality of the mike However I
definitely get the best reports from the RadioSports...

Re: [Flexradio] Weird 1500 operation

2014-03-10 Thread Greg Jurrens
Mike:

Good morning. Let's try 2 things to see if we can get you going:

RESET YOUR DATABASE:
1. Power up radio
2. Start PowerSDR
3. Go to /SETUP/GENERAL
4. In the lower left, hit the FACTORY DEFAULTS button.
5. This will close the program.
6. Restart PowerSDR and see if that works.

MANUALLY RE-INSTALL the USB Driver
1. Power OFF the FLEX-1500
2. Go to C:\Program Files\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v2.7.2 \1500 Driver64
3. Find the file uninstall.bat Right Click on the file and then click
RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
4. When it's finished... Reboot the PC
5. After rebooted ... Go to C:\Program Files\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR
v2.7.2 \1500 Driver64
6. Find the file wd_install.bat Right Click on the file and then click
RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
7. When it's finished... Reboot the PC
8. Power up the radio and let it finish the installation.
9. Start PowerSDR and see what's up.

FYI, this post looks like a direct request for HELP. With 6 different
radios and 2 radio operating systems now, our CS team is hopping pretty
fast. I would suggest for HELP questions in the future, submit a ticket to
http://helpdesk.flexradio.com . We are actually converting all HELP inputs
from email, phone, community, etc. to tickets so we can respond efficiently
and not drop anything along the way.

Good luck. If the above doesn't work, I'd suggest getting SUPPORT formally
in the loop.

I know that it is an installation issue.

Tim, how do I totally remove everything? What are the registry settings

Both computers are w7/64. One works great (other than bad CW) and the

The Transmitter is without any question the best AM of any radio they

will tell you this. Now he is a Ham, he does get on HF, he has used an

How far is the feedpoint from the shack? I would start with good chokes
at the feed point and another at the shack entrance or whatever antenna
switch ou are using. Do a google search for K9YC common mode choke. He

So I have rf in the shack. Where to start, I havent the foggiest idea. It only

Possible culprits? Audio, power lnes?

I know we don't have a PR40 specific but as mentioned the 781 is very close

When you do get it set up just go to the /SETUP/TRANSMIT page and SAVE a

The best part is that with the new Transfer utility in PowerSDR v2.7.2, you

What advice do you have for me on the most important factors that I
should consider in purchasing my first SDR radio?

 ---

 Hi Craig,

I've had my Flex-3000 for 4+ years and I've had a lot of fun with it.
There's a lot to learn about the SDR world...and it's changing fast
 too.

 To me, the most important
factor in selecting a Software Defined Radio
is ... The Software. The Software determines not only the
traditional performance of the radio (sensitivity, selectivity,
functionality, etc.) but more importantly it determines how you will
interact with the radio, i.e., the User Interface.

Traditional knobby radios of course have knobs, switches, sliders,
etc., and you're stuck with using them for whatever activity you're
doing with your radio. With Software, things change. You can select
a different piece of software for different activities, and change at
 will by loading different software.

For example, when I'm DXing, I use DXLab software, and interact
primarily with the logging, spotting, and information windows. When
contesting, I use N1MM, and interact with it's band map, QSO window,
etc. When doing RTTY, I use MMTTY (sometimes several at the same
 time). All
of this is with the Flex-3000. I don't need knobs at
all, and in fact it's hard to imagine how someone could design a
comparable radio with the same functionality but only using
 knobs/switches.

Since SDRs don't have knobs, you sometimes need some kind of basic
software that provides those generic functions that you'd otherwise
have on knobs. The mouse/keyboard interface isn't as natural (for me
at least) when using such virtual knobs and switches but it does
give you a basic ability to use the radio. However, I've found that
when I'm doing serious work, I interact primarily with software that
is designed for that activity. So, with my Flex-3000, I interact with
DXLab and N1MM (the task-oriented software) much more than I interact
with PowerSDR (the virtual knobs software).

The exception to this is the Panadapter, which essentially provides a
 visual display of what's going
on. I look at it a lot, even though I
manipulate the radio through N1MM or DXLab. I yearn for the day when
the Panadapter display is integrated with the N1MM bandmap...so
everything I need to watch is in one place. Most SDR software
provides some kind of similar visual display, but some (e.g.,
Skimmers)are more suited for certain activities than others.

So, bottom line -- I suggest you figure out what software you'd like
to use to do whatever kinds of radio activities you enjoy. Then
figure out which of the SDR hardware works well in the overall system
configuration where you'll use that software.

PowerSDR forms the base for using the Flex hardware. As far as I can
tell, it's the only available option for Flex hardware. But there
are many other software choices available too for other hardware -
variants of PowerSDR (e.g., PowerSDR HDSDR), SDR-Radio, cuSDR,
  etc.),
and many choices for hardware that they support. Instead of
comparing Flex-1500, Flex-3000, and Elecraft KX-3, you would compare
PowerSDR (or other base software) and whatever other software you
would like to use, and evaluate how it works

Jim WD5IYT in our shop has the K9AY up and it is excellent for the low bands

the 20 meter noise floor near 14070 is -125 dBm at the moment. At times
connecting an antenna to the Flex-1500 increases the NF only by 6 dB
greater than an when on a dummy load.

When I move to town due to age or medical condition, if I can still play
radio, I probably will try a magnetic loop, a HEX beam, and another HF-2V
if there's room. The one thing I have NOT mentioned and something to
consider is the required separation between the TX antenna and the K9AY
Loop System I think its 100 feet if you operate QRO, but you should
read the documentation to avoid damage to the pre-amp or your receiver. As
my FLEX-1500 is operated as receive only and as the sub-receiver of an
OMNI-VII and Titan-425 station, I made sure I had more than the minimum
distance and put a RF limiter in the RX line. YMMV...

Re: [Flexradio] Remoting the F5K Prelim reslults

2013-12-10 Thread Greg Jurrens
I'll throw this one in:

In one of my previous lives, the team that developed the IEEE-1394A and B
OHCI controllers and Physical Layer chips worked in my department. They
were seriously smart people so I mostly left them alone... but some of it
did rub off. What we learned early in the B development which became the
S800 (and S1600) speeds, that inconsistencies in the standard UTP wiring
can become significant at those speeds. The issue is crosstalk between the
PAIRS even though each differential signal pair had decent common mode
rejection. The resultant solution for the high reliability world was to go
to low-cost Plastic Fiber for the transmission medium. This solved the
CMRR problem at the cost of... cost! I see the company you chose also has
an industrial version that uses Fiber.. .at 2x the price.

I suspect with some experimenting you'll be able to make your configuration
work. If you decide to try Shielded Twisted Pair (STP), you'll likely have
to play with grounding. One to try is to ground the shield on the radio
side but not on the house side.

Good luck!

A while back I mentioned that I was going to try an experiment to remote
the Flex 5000 A. I have been delayed due to weather as in UPS
 wouldn???t
deliver needed cables. I have the cables now and the experiment is
  underway.

Problem: I would like to remote a F5K a couple hundred feet from the
computer. Firewire is good to about 15 feet if you are lucky.

Approach: To exceed the distance limitation imposed by
FireWire/IEEE-1394 I selected a COTS hardware approach using a pair of
FireNEX-CAT5-S800 units which are IEEE-1394 to Cat5 adapters. These
adapters come as a pair and handle up to S800 at a distance of up to 100
  Meters (324 ft)

The Flex runs at S400 so I figured it oughta work. Each adapter has a
RJ-45 port and a pair of 9 pin Firewire ports. There is also a DC input
socket (8 to 19 VDC) which is only needed if you try for the longer
 ranges
or your IEEE-1394 port on yoiur computer won???t source the needed
 power..
There is an available accessory power supply if you need it.

Indicators on the adapters consist of two LEDs. One indicates it is
powered up and the other shows Cat5 connectivity.

What I did: I ordered and received a pair of 3 ft IEEE-1394 cables
 with
9 pins on one end and 6 pins on the other. I plugged the 9 pin ends
 into
the two adapters and the 6 pin ends into the computer and the radio. I
connected the two adapters via a 50 ft Cat5e cable with RJ-45
 connectors.
I turned the radio on and the lights lit up on the two adapters. I
started PSDR and the radio operated normally. This is day two of the
experiment and there is no indication that the radio and computer are
connected through two adapters and 50 ft of Cat5e.

I would be pleased to receive suggestions as to what to do or where to
look to see/detect any deviation in performance due to latency or
 anything
else. I am unable to note any difference in normal operation. I
 suspect I
am operating well within the capabilities of these adapters. I will be
trying a longer Cat5e cable but since the units are specified for up to
S800 at up to 100 meters using them for S400 at a couple hundred feet
should not be a problem. Unless I messed up the arithmetic 100 meters
 is a
delay of about 1/3 of a microsecond times the reciprocal of the velocity
factor. I don???t know the velocity factor of Cat5e but surely it is not
slower than 0.5 which would give a delay of 2/3 of a microsecond. So

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 104, Issue 1

2013-12-06 Thread Greg Jurrens
Hi folks!

We've been doing the testing on the PTC series for the FLEX-6000 so it's on
my mind right now.

1. We think using DIGU and DIGL is better because it does change a few of
the AGC and filter delay settings in PowerSDR.
2. Wiring to the FlexWire port on the back is pretty convenient and allows
you to leave your mic connected. The details are in the knowledge base.

3. We've had pretty good luck with the PTCII on the 3000. I will admit
there are times when LONG PATH is the desired connect setting but it does a
good job of high speed data transfers once the connection is made. Here is
my favorite list of parameters:

Here's the link to the PTCII interface:

http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50422.aspx?Keywords=pactor+III

Below are settings that are known to work:

1. KC article on how to interface your PTC modem:

http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50422.aspx?Keywords=pactor

2. Typical SETUP settings that we found works best with the modem on the
FLEX-3000

In PowerSDR:

SETUP/AUDIO
 BUFFER SIZE: 256
 SAMPLE RATE: 96000

SETUP/DIGITAL/OPTIONS
BUFFER SIZE DIGITAL RX: 256 / TX: 256

PHONERX: 256 / TX: 256 Optional if you want to use USB
setting rather than DIGU setting

SETUP/CAT
 ID as TS-2000
 CAT CONTROL ENABLED
 COM7 (Virtual port from Com0com)
 NONE
 57600
 8 bits
 1 stop

MIXER
   FLEXWIRE IN (checked)
   FLEXWIRE OUT (checked)

on Main PowerSDR Screen:
   DRIVE: 100
   AGC-T: 100
   AGC - MED
RX GAIN: OFF (Optional Pre1 for 20M and higher)
   MODE: DIGU
   FILTER: 2.9kHz
   MODE SPECIFIC CONTROLS:
  RX GAIN: 4
  TX GAIN: 20
  SAMPLE RATE: 8000

Note: You can use the USB mode for successful Pactor III if required. The
settings below are optimized for Pactor and will give sub-optimal results
for conventional Phone (voice) settings
Optional USB Settings:
  MODE USB
  FILTER: 2.4kHz
  TX Profile: DEFAULT
  CMPDR OFF
  MIC GAIN: 20

In AIRMAIL V3.4
 MODE PACTOR III
 Monitoring ENABLED
 Long Path - OFF

SET PTC-II AMPLITUDE
FSK 1530
PSK 1631
TXD 20

The above settings will yield good undistorted output at 95-100W with good
receive fidelity. I've tested this on 2 radios with similar results.

Good luck and I hope this helps! I will let you know that we are testing a
new Firewire driver for PowerSDR 2.7.x that ...may... help with stream
latency. I have to wrestle the modem away from the Development team so I
can test it with 2.7.

Greg - K5GJ

Re: [Flexradio] [FlexEdge] 5000A ECOs..?

2013-10-22 Thread Greg Jurrens
Jordan:

We are working through how to publish the ECOs for the FLEX-5000a. Neal's
assessment of the important ones is correct. There are 2 ECOs that relate
to radio performance.

1. Original RFIO v27 board was replaced with v34(a,b,c). We recommend all
radios have the 34x RFIO board. All 3 34x versions have minor
manufacturing variations but nothing related to performance or operation.
2. We introduced an optional 80m and/or 160m transmit exciter filter
upgrade in late 2010. This is for CW stations running low bands and full
legal limit power. The filters further suppress unwanted signals from
-56dBc to -75dBc or better. Note that the 80m filter mod is not compatible
with MARS operation.

The rest of the ECOs are simply for changes to the Bill of Materials for
manufacturing reasons.

Thanks,

73,
Greg - K5GJ

 Jordon,

I do not speak for Flex but I have been hanging around here for a long
 time.

Flex does not publicly list the ECOs associated with their equipment. From
observation, they seem to segregate the ECOs between got to recall and
next time the radio is in the shop, apply these fixes.

In the first category, you will see these typically happen around the
first months of general availability. I remember 1 for the 5000 for the
RFPIO board (the board managing the switching for the ports on the back of
the radio) which was needed for dual receiver configurations, and 1 for
the 3000 preamp if memory is correct.

Of the second category, probably the most publicized is the mod for
the 160M Spur problem. I don't play on 160 so I never was moved to
disconnect my radio and ship it to Austin for that but am sure that
when it was in later for firewire chip replacement, it was applied.
You can see on the repair record that they send back with your radio,
what was installed at the factory.

Luckily many people have not had to send their radios back. I am
pretty confident that you don't have a radio with the two problems I
can remember of the recall variety and the others probably are not
noticible in the absense or presense.

Let me see if I can triage your issue:

1. Go to /SETUP/HARDWARE and see if the hardware list shows an ATU present

This will reset everything and close PowerSDR. Cycle power on the radio

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Community for the rest of us?

2013-10-21 Thread Greg Jurrens
Evening folks:

I apologize that it feels like nobody is watching the email reflectors. As
you can imagine, we've been pretty busy in Customer Support and that
has caused us to be temporarily less responsive in some areas.

As Ed posted, our plan has always been to roll the Flex Community out
initially in support of the FLEX-6000 then transition the rest of the
FLEX-Series radios as soon as we can. We're feeling pretty good with the
FLEX-6000 Community and we are now starting our planning stage for phase
II. We'll be sure to make some noise on all frequencies when we formally
turn up Community support for the rest of our hardware and software
products.

In the meantime, we're all going to do our best to be more responsive to
you on the existing reflectors. The Flex Reflectors are monitored by
hundreds of experienced Flexers so the answer is probably out there waiting
for your question. If you don't get the answer you need in a timely
manner, please use one of these methods for now:

2. FlexRadio Support Email - supp...@flexradio.com
3. Flex Telephone Support U.S. Number (512) 535-4713 then press 2 for

4. If all else fails, drop me a note to g...@flexradio.com. I may not know

Re: [Flexradio] Why not a best guess on ship dates?

2013-06-19 Thread Greg Jurrens
Hi Geep and the Flexer crowd:

This topic is near and dear to me so I'd like to answer this one on behalf
of FlexRadio. This is the official What's going to happen? statement I
published to the FLEX-6000 Pre-order customers about 6 weeks ago:

*My FLEX-6000: What to Expect Regarding Your Order *
by Greg Jurrens, K5GJ - VP, Sales and Marketing

As we run flat out for the finish line, we are going to be pretty tied up
with all the details of getting your radio from our door to yours. You
know we love to hear from you but the number of Where is my radio?, Where
am I in line? and When am I going to get mine? calls is really picking
up. In the coming weeks, our concern is that we'll get overloaded with
calls. Therefore I thought it might help to describe the process we will
use to process your order and prepare for shipment. But first I want to
assure you we understand the importance of where you are in line. For
everyone that ordered a Limited Edition radio, your spot in the queue was
set by the time and date of your first order entry. If you ordered at
12:01am on the Friday of Dayton last year then you will have a very low
Limited Edition sequence number. If you later added a GPSDO or handles to
your order, you still get to keep your early sequence number even though
you might have a higher invoice number. If you've been selected to be part
of the expanded Beta program, your Limited Edition number will still
reflect where you are in the sequence.

The order completion process will go like this: About 7 to 14 days before
we ship your radio, we will contact you by telephone to confirm your
shipping address, add any last minute accessories, and capture your payment
information. For those paying by credit card, we will do what is called an
AUTHORIZE on your credit card for your outstanding balance while you are on
the line with us. Please don't panic if we get a 'bounce' from your credit
card provider. Because the charge will be done electronically and the
value of the transaction is higher than normal, many of your banks will
initially challenge the charge. Most often, it's a daily charge limit on
online purchases that you may or may not be aware of. If this happens to
you (and it will happen often...), we will simply ask you to contact your
provider using the number on the back of your credit card and let them know
this is a valid charge from FlexRadio Systems. Most processors will even
see the charge attempt on your account. Just let them know the charge is
legitimate, then let us know, and we will re-run the card. Please don't be
embarrassed or upset with your card provider or us. As painful as this
seems, we've come to accept it as a fact of our online lives and they are
looking out for our financial safety.

As a reminder, when you placed your order, we let you know that if we can't
reach you after 5 business days, we'll hold your sequence number in the
queue but move that radio on to the next person in line for shipping.
Since you are receiving this FlexInsider, we know your email address
works. If we can't reach you by phone, we will also drop you an email note
to let you know we are trying to complete your order. That's when we DO
need to have you call us at 512-535-4713 and press 1 for SALES to finish
things up.

Please bear with us in Sales and Shipping as we prepare for production ramp
up of the FLEX-6000. We'll do our best to be responsive to your needs. We
only ask for a bit of restraint in calling to just check on your order. In
return we will do our best to process your order quickly and get your long
awaited radio to you. Thanks.

So... where are we?

As I'm sure you've heard, we're now shipping radios daily and doing
everything we can to ramp up the volume. We're doubling our tester
capability (the current bottleneck) and working hard to increase all levels
of throughput. The work we are doing now will improve our schedules and
this one reason it doesn't make sense for us to make public delivery date
promises.

For those of you with a FLEX-6000 on order, you are already receiving
weekly updates. We'll do our best to keep you informed on our throughput
progress. (If you have a radio on order and are NOT getting the weekly
Insider update, please drop us a note to sa...@flexradio.com and we will
update your email address.)

Thanks for your patience. Everyone at FlexRadio Systems is completely
focused on getting your new FLEX-6000 to you as quickly as possible.

Greg - K5GJ

 What is a big concern
is - where to from here ?. I want to look at the next rig I will be buying,
 and there is nothing
that runs on PowerSDR that is an upgrade for me. Currently, the top of the
 line Flex radio
that runs on PowerSDR is the Flex-3000. I already have one of those, but I
 am wanting to
upgrade from my Flex-5000…..and I don't want to move over to a signature
 radio that runs
on SmartSDR. I was recently demonstrated the 6000 series radio with SmartSDR
 at the Orlando
Hamcation in February, and I left the demo feeling underwhelmed and
 disappointed.

Quite frankly, I prefer PowerSDR, with all the buttons and adjustments on
 the display…..not to
mention the beautiful waterfall display. Having used a waterfall for the
 past 2 years with PowerSDR,
I cannot move to anything that does not have it. The information that you
 can get off a waterfall
display with 45 second history cannot be overstated. I don't want to look at
 a display, that only
shows rows upon rows of slices - that I would never use….and nothing else.
 I also don't want to
have to push a second function key, and scroll down a list to select basic
 things like mode, drive,
volume, mic gain etc etc . These should be right on the display, as is the
 case with PowerSDR

I am not the only one that is concerned about this - I have received a
 number of emails from
fellow Flexers, that have either moved away from Flex, or that are planning
 to move away,
due to there being nothing to replace the Flex-5000 with, that runs on
 PowerSDR.

So, where to from here ? Right now, I am looking at upgrading to a Kenwood
 TS-990S. Others
have indicated moving to ANAN/Apache, or Elecraft with LP-Pan and PowerSDR.

Please understand, we are loyal Flexers, and would have continued buying
Flex - if there was an
upgrade to the Flex-5000 available….but we have no upgrade path where we can
 remain with
PowerSDR, and so we are looking at other options.
However, I will keep my Flex-5000, it remains a good rig, and it runs on the
 best software currently
available to SDR radio's. But, my next radio to experiment with, will be a
TS-990S, as I have no other
 options at Flex.

[Flexradio] FLEX-5000A End of Manufacturing Announcement

2013-05-20 Thread Greg Jurrens
Dear FlexRadio Systems customers:

**

The FLEX-5000A began production in 2007 as our flagship Software Defined
Radio product. It has been highly successful and its chart-topping
performance is enjoyed daily by thousands of customers around the world.
Recently, we've been faced with procurement challenges related to
subsystems and components used in the FLEX-5000 product that would force a
product redesign. These challenges plus the dramatic customer shift from
the FLEX-5000 to the FLEX-6500 for new purchases make it economically
unfeasible to continue manufacturing the FLEX-5000. Here are the important
points:

   -

We will continue to support and service the FLEX-5000A in our US,
Canadian, and EU Service depots for many years to come just as we’ve done
   with all FlexRadio products.
   -

We will continue to enhance and support PowerSDR™ as we have done for
the past 10 years. Four new releases of PowerSDR have been delivered in
the last 12 months and more enhancements are in development now.
   -

We will continue to sell the RX2 second receiver and the ATU autotuner
upgrades for the FLEX-5000 as long as there is a meaningful demand for the
   products.

We sincerely appreciate our loyal FlexRadio customers and it was great to
see so many of you this weekend at Dayton Hamvention 2013. We thank you
for your support and understanding as we make this necessary product
transition.

crimp the connection good enough. Either buy the purpose built type or
solder them on(be sure to keep the flux off the contacts too). This will
insure you have a good, low resistance connection between your PSU and your
 new Flex Rig.

Here's a website to calculate the voltage drop of the wire (remember, you
have to count the length of the positive and the negative path).
 http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm
Another thing, be careful of some of the 10AWG wire being sold on EBay,
Amazon and some other websites, it's more like 11 AWG.

[Flexradio] 6000 questions

2013-02-05 Thread Greg
Tim,

I sent this out over the weekend addressed to Steve but have not seen
any replies. If you have the time can you address these questions?

Thanks.

Steve,

If I have two slices open on the same pan adapter on the same band are there
any issues to the second slice when transmitting on the first one?
Inter mod? Full duplex?

What about if a second pan adapter is open connected to the second scu?
Will external bandpass filters be needed to prevent intermod on the second
scu?

Are slices on different pan adapters but on the same scu full duplex for
SO2R or is full duplex only possible when using two SCUs?

Do all the panadapters have a waterfall and a panafall display option?

Thanks!

[Flexradio] Using wireless headset with PSDR

2013-01-07 Thread Greg
I connected a Plantronics Audio 995 wireless headset to the computer
running PSDR. I found it was necessary to turn VAC1 on for them to
work. But it only seems to work on one channel. If I turn on Multi
Rx the second channel is not heard.

I tried checking the box for Stereo Output on the VAC1 Audio screen
but then I got an error box saying wrong number of channels.

Does the VAC configuration need to be changed for this to work?

Thanks.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 500 sort of lock up and contest findings

One thing that we really need, is a quick button to switch to a beverage
antenna and back. Using the Antenna tab and flipping from ANT1 to RX1 is
not practical in a contest situation.

That is a great idea for both PSDR and the new 6xxx GUI. I cannot
imagine it would be too difficult to do and also assign a keyboard
shortcut.

As we were a multi station (VA3SK/ONN) I was able to show a few others why
this radio is so good. Notching out some splatter from the Slow Scan TV
guys was one great example (someone should tell them that they don't own
the frequency, but lets not go there please :) ). Not having the AGC pump
was another as was TX Audio bandwidth.

On 3 occasions, the receive audio died and I was using the headphone jack
on the radio. I could see the radio was active as PSDR was not frozen.
When the RX audio died, so did TX as PTT did nothing (front panel PTT).

It took a reboot of the 5000 and stopping and starting PSDR to bring it
back. It was good that this was on a SP exercise.

We ran on all bands from 160M to 10M at 1200PEP and an ACOM 1000 and this
only happened 3 times Sunday morning. I suspect it might have been RF, but
it is heard to tell. The 80M V is about 200 ft away with the apex at 120
ft and we use common mode chokes on just about everything.

One thing that we really need, is a quick button to switch to a beverage
antenna and back. Using the Antenna tab and flipping from ANT1 to RX1 is
not practical in a contest situation. It would be better if this could be
coded into the Knob (or a Hercules). I might have to go to an external
switch like the DX Engineering RX1 and not use the RX1 port on the radio.
For a RUN station, you really can't take focus away from your logging
 software.

Tim, is this a request that has been made in the past?

[Flexradio] VU5K End of Production Notice

2012-06-01 Thread Greg Jurrens
FLEX-5000 Owners:

We regret to announce that we've had to make the difficult decision to end
production of the VU5K VHF/UHF Module for the FLEX-5000. This decision was
driven by continued component (un)availability making deliveries
unreliable. One of the component families in the module has gone obsolete
and there isn't a viable replacement for our design.

We've convinced the component manufacturer to support us with parts for a
last time buy so we would like to offer the same Last Call notice to
our valued FLEX-5000 customers. The lead time for the modules will be
10-12 weeks so we will work hard to minimize your downtime.

If you would like to add the VU5K module to your FLEX-5000, please contact
us before June 14 so we can get you on the list. You can order online or
call sales at 512-535-4713. The price is $1397.00 plus return shipping. Once
we get everything ready, our service team will coordinate with you for an
RMA to ship your radio in for the upgrade.

We apologize for the short notice on this announcement. Unfortunately it
just isn't feasible for us to continue producing the VU5K module. Rest
assured we will maintain plenty of repair components to service your VU5K
and your FLEX-5000 for years to come.

Thanks for your understanding and continued support of FlexRadio Systems.

and output that in some way to skimmer for multiple band decoding
similar to the QS1R. Or maybe Alex would be willing to work on an
interface to connect skimmer server via IP to the 6700/6500 to decode
based on the limits setup by the Skimmer server software. If that
were possible I could sell my QS1R :)

Multiple means at least 2, and maybe 4/8. I don't see the hardware
connection points, so maybe we will have audio streaming over the
 ethernet
to the PC client. My error.

John, a significant gain is that the new design can receive several
 slices
of spectrum at once. In other words, you can run a number of the
lightweight display/control windows at the same time, each pointing to
different frequency slices. They can be on different bands, modes, etc.

We know that reception as panadaptor views of those 4-8 slices are
planned, but we don't know if we will have audio from 4-8 receivers
available for use in some worthwhile way. Might be disappointing to
 assume
that ordinary functions will all be available in an extraordinary radio,
 then find they are not.

[Flexradio] Back from Dayton - Please bear with us...

2012-05-23 Thread Greg Jurrens
Hey Flexer folks:

Well... That was SOME Dayton! We're all finally getting back to Austin and
trying to dig out. The response to our new FLEX-6000 Signature Series
announcement and FLEX-Series Dayton Specials has been overwhelming so we
are a bit behind on email, voicemail, and even order entries. Please bear
with us as we catch up. We're a few folks down right now so we're working
hard to catch up and provide you with the service you expect. The most
important priorities are shipping new FLEX-Series radios to excited owners
and getting service radios back into the hands of our Flexers. Matt is
head deep in new FLEX-6000 pre-orders so don't worry: You'll get a
confirmation email when your order is entered into the system. We took
very careful notes regarding order date and time so you early birds really
will be early in the queue!

Thanks again for your amazing response to this year's Dayton and for your
patience. Gerald described it best today:It's like a DX pileup... We're
on the Island working Q's as fast as we can and we're only through the
First Call District. Bear with us. We'll get there!

73,
Greg

I like to use this to speed things along. You can program the keys to
do anything N1MM can do via short cuts and the knob will control the
freq when in SP and it controls the RIT when in RUN mode.

As you know, N1MM keeps wanting to grab the focus. That advantage of the
FlexControl is that it always talks to PowerSDR regardless of where the
focus is. I highly recommend it.

Program the FlexControl buttons for you most-used PowerSDR operations,
 use
 the mouse for N1MM operations.

You statement about needing a mouse to use the band map features in N1MM is
not strictly accurate. There are keyboard shortcuts in N1MM that perform
most of the same functions available with a mouse. For example:
Ctrl+Down Arrow - Get next spot higher in frequency.
Ctrl+Up Arrow - Get next spot lower in frequency.
Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow - Get next spot higher in frequency that is a
 multiplier.
Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow - Get next spot lower in frequency that is a
 multiplier.

SmartSDR runs in the radio. The light weight GUI client is called

C# / VS2010 for the Windows client. Other clients will probably use what

Depends on the process. Some of it is still being worked out to optimize

Is there an OS running on the ARM processor in the radio?

 Yes. A Linux kernel.

[Flexradio] Some 6700 questions

2012-05-18 Thread Greg
Order is placed but I was thinking about some setup issues and
wondering if anyone here has any details.

1. I believe the audio in/out is processed over the network, correct?

2. How much router setup is involved or is it done automatically? Is
the setup similar to the remoteRig process?

3. With all the IO on the radio, how is CW keying accomplished if I
want to use a key at the control location? Do I need something like a
K1EL USB keyer that connects to the SDR software?

4. How is TX audio handled at the control location? Does it use the
soundcard mic input and pass that over the network to the radio?

5. Is the a provision to work with VAC for CW Skimmer or do you think
Skimmer will (eventually) talk directly to the 6700 as it does the
QS1R to be able to decode multiple bands at a time?

6. Software updates - Not too fond of this but I can understand it I
guess. BUT I am concerned that I may have to pay for updates to get
basic advertised functions that are not implemented yet at the time of
initial shipping...such as remote over the internet (not just the
LAN). IMO any subscription for updates should commence AFTER all the
functionality is implemented and working correctlyTHEN you can
pay for new features and updates.

7. CAT compatability with loggers...is this going to use the same
FLEX 5K protocol or something totally different where software authors
are going to have to add another radio script?

Thanks!

 Greg,

 Those all all good questions.

As for 6. Software Updates, since all is speculation at this point I think
it useful to remember who we are dealing with. In my experience Gerald,
K5SDR, feels that fairness trumps business. In my own case he did the right
thing at the cost of hundreds of dollars and as far as I could tell never
even considered doing anything other than what was right. I believe he will
apply that principle to ensure that whatever changes are made to software
distribution are fair and reasonable for loyal customers.

One thing to remember is that the whole thing about obsolescence of
computers is largely nonsense. Does the computer you bought still do what
you bought it for? If so it is not obsolete, anymore than last year's car
is obsolete. If Flex stopped development of PowerSDR today the 5000a, et
al, would still be remarkable rigs. Also, PowerSDR is open source and can
continue to be upgraded by the community in the same manner that
 characterizes Linux.

Another thing is that the software for the 6000 series is NOT PowerSDR but
a new software product, SmartSDR (there is no mention of open source) with
a new support philosophy. This separation of software families is a
sensible way to address some of the economic realities of handling the
costs of software development and support.

DX station and prevents the op from tuning up on top of the DX.

Or maybe having PSDR flash LID! LID! in big letters when the op trys to
 do
 this.

And if he trys to tuneup for over a minute the rig will go into a forced
shut down and will not turn on for an hour.

Now that would be a big game changer to me.

[Flexradio] Looking for an alternative input method for PowerSDR

2012-02-23 Thread Greg Jurrens
Hey Flex Folks:

I have a customer that is trying to get his close friend into amateur
radio. This individual has MS and no longer has dexterity with his
hands. He can speak and see so the hamming part is easy It's
the radio tuning that's a challenge.

If you have any experience with voice or eye-tracker control of ham
radio, I'd love to hear from you. This doesn't need to be with a
FLEX-Series radio although I think PowerSDR would be a great visual
tool for this person. The key challenge is to get him active on the
bands.

Please contact me OFF-LIST at g...@flexradio.com . I'll then hook you
up with the Ham that's working to get a new ham on the air!

Thanks and 73,
Greg

Re: [Flexradio] The new 472-479 kHz band - REAL DX

2012-02-19 Thread Greg Zenger [N2GZ]
I bet Flex has or, or plans to do, some market research to determine if it
is viable to develop an upgrade, accessory, or new product that is capable
of 600m. I imagine being first-to-market with a radio that can cover the
new band could be good for business.

Ken, I was likewise surprised by your statement about successfully using
the
Flex-1500 to receive 600 meter ham beacons. I've read Flex discussion
boards for several years. To the very limited degree that users comment on
the lowfer receive performance of Flex radios, posts have always suggested
the 3000 and 5000 are worthless below the BCB (and perhaps not great even
on
the AM BCB). I wonder what's so different about the 1500 in that regard.

Flex has similar frequency coverage specs for all radios, but
mentions that additional preselectors or filters are required below
1.8 MHz, even for the 1500. I remember reading that the 5000 has a
superior set of filters, so it may appear deader below 1.8 MHz than
the other radios.

Seems to me this is an opportunity for a third party
kitter/manufacturer to supply an outboard preamp+filter product.
