Phil,

I did the same this weekend with a borrowed K3, which is a very nice rig;
however, you can't beat the 5K for clarity when the signals are in the

I have both radios now and used them in the just ended DX contest. I did
lots of a/b comparisons.
Let me tell you (from my perspective) nothing beats the audio and visual
input to the brain. With the 5000 narrowed down to 100Hz or less, it was
unbeatable.

I take the output of my radios and feed them to a Behringer UB-502 mixer
then to the AUX input of a Panasonic book shelf system. I use a set of
nosie canceling studio headphones plugged into the mixer when I have the AMP
working to eliminate blower noise. The bookshelf system really makes the
audio coming from the FlexRadio sound fantastic.

Like to here more of what people are using for there speakers for there SDR?

I have seen within the knowledge base Best Speaker List.

I recently purchased a Altec Lansing VS4221 computer speaker set up and it
has very good sound and response. But I can't use it on 75 meters that I
know of. Just too much feedback and I have put ferrite cores all over the
place.

I am using the SDR 1K and FA-66

I went back to a small Infiniy computer set of speakers and have no issues
but don't get as good of sound.

I am even open to setting up a tuner/amp and running out to some decent
bookshelf speakers but would just like to know more before I purchase
something.

Re: [Flexradio] SVNs and new database. Was: SSB Tx Audio Punch

2008-01-06 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
Alan,
It's not necessary to change the database; however, you should consider
doing so if you are having problems.

Save the old database under a different name. Create a new one-its done
automatically when you start PowerSDR. If the problem goes away, you know it
was related to the old database. If you still have a problem, it wasn't
database related so you might as well import the one you saved and look
elsewhere for a solution. In this way you won't have to load new settings
unnecessarily.

Are we supposed to start with a new database for every new SVN, or
simply keep the database used with SVN versions separate from that used
with the release version? It'll be a pain changing antenna, CAT, VAC and
other settings for every new SVN I download.

Re: [Flexradio] SSB Tx Audio Punch

2008-01-05 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
I'm really perplexed by these posts. I am using SVN 1875. ALC was added
ahead of the audio chain to prevent distortion and overdrive; however, a DX
button was added to increase the CPDR range. A 15-25% increase in audio
processing is possible giving the FlexRadio incredible talk power. Try it,
I think you'll be impressed. The CPDR slider controls the DX processing
level.

Ian,

I do have the same problem. The audio punch is gone after SVN1836. It looks
like a change has been made to the voice processing routine to avoid a
potential PA overdrive but that diminished the SSB average power
significantly. If you are using the Tortoise you can always roll back to a
version number you'd want to. I did exactly that, have rolled back to
SVN1836 and stopped updating since then. This problem has been reported on
the reflector a while back but I guess nothing has been done to correct it.
I wish we could follow the new SVN updates but it looks like if we want to
keep the SSB punch we will have to stick to SVN1836 for the time being.

Ian, check your MIC level-you may have to increase your mixer or MIC levels.
You should achieve between -5 and 0dB on the MIC meter, regardless of Drive
level. For additional punch try using the CPDR. The latest SVN software has
an exceptionally good feature the DX control which will increase your
processing level by at least 10 dB for exceptional punch

Dave,

I am sorry but I do not have specific answers by sales order at my
fingertips. John will return from vacation on the 2nd and should give an
update soon thereafter. All I can say is that we have had everyone working
hard as they can with the limited number of working days and being at half
staff during the holidays.

Note that when we give estimated shipment dates, they are simply our best
estimates given the information we have at the time. We have over 50
vendors that supply parts for the FLEX-5000. It only takes one part problem
from a single supplier to create a delay. For example, our vendor for the
5000C front panels built the latest batch backwards. We learned this the
day they were to deliver, even though they built the first batch correctly.
We just got the corrected ones back yesterday. That cost us over a week on
the C model delivery. We should be able to ship much of the C model backlog
over the next week unless we run into other materials issues. They have
been in burn in for several days waiting for the panels and final assembly.

We should also see 5000A shipments pick back up next week.

Regards,
Gerald

Hello Flexers,

I wanted to give everyone an update on our schedule for next week:

Monday December 31 - Our contract manufacturer is closed on Monday but we
are negotiating to get them to open the plant for us that day. We will not
know until their President returns tomorrow as to whether they can open for
us. We are co-located with our manufacturer so we cannot open they do not
have someone there to open and close for us. We hope to ship radios on
Monday if we are able to get on site. Our support telephone line goes to
the plant currently, so it will not be answered on Monday if we are not able
to use the facility.

Tuesday January 1 - Plant is closed and support line will not be available.
Many of us will be reading our email however over the holiday. We just
can't seem to get away. ;)

Wednesday January 2 - Back to work but we will be doing year end inventory.
Shipping will be limited that day until inventory is completed.

We would like to wish everyone a healthy, safe and productive new year.
Thanks for making this a great one for FlexRadio Systems.

Sincerely,
Gerald Youngblood
President

email address and phone lines have been transferred to others in the
organization; however, email addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] will not be
transferred. I will try and read my email everyday but this may not be
possible some days.

The crew at FlexRadio can reach me by cell phone at any time if necessary.

Production is continuing at a brisk clip and the FLEX team is working
overtime to get as many radios out the door as possible; however, we will
not sacrifice quality for quantity.

I personally want to wish everyone holiday greetings and to thank you for
your business, support, and friendship during 2007. To say that 2007 was a
challenging and exciting (rewarding too) year is a gross understatement. :-)

73

Have fun this holiday season. I'm looking forward to seeing Flexers at the
Hamcation in Orlando in February.

If there were any signals I could copy on 6 I could figure it out quick

Re: [Flexradio] HC-5 sound from Pro element

2007-11-28 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
Steve,

The Heil 4 element has less gain than the wide response element therefore
you need to lower the mic gain. When using the wide element you will need
to EQ the MIC-reduce the lows by 12 dB and boost the mids and highs by +3
db. You don't need to EQ the 4 element but use the Conventional or DX
Profiles. I will have more on proper setup at a later date.

Thanks Eric!

The TX Profiles was the answer I was looking for!

There is one correction. The GM-4 has a broadcast element, not a PRO
element. Don't know where I got that. It seems Heil already makes the mike I
am looking for, the HM-10 which is a dual HC-4/HC-5 mike.

I played around the 5000A last night in the monitor mode listening to my
voice on a headset. It seems the GM-4 in WIDE mode with the broadcast
element picks up a lot of background noise. I have to use the noise gate
feature to keep it quiet. That is a question for Heil Sound or John.

I'm no microphone expert. John can probably help you with how to make the
HC-4 sound like an HC-5 or vice versa. However, I can tell you that the TX
Profiles do store the EQ data. So you can use TX Profiles to store
different EQ settings and switch between them rapidly.

OK: here's one for all you audiophile Flexers! Maybe even W5GI!

I have a Heil GM-4 I bought second hand. It has a the HC-4 element in
narrow mode and the Pro element in wide mode. I also have the Heil
Proset Plus headset which switches between HC-5 and HC-4 elements. A
local on 75 meters told me the HC-5 setting has very good audio with
 my voice.

OK, I want to know how to set up the GM-4 in wide mode so it sounds
like an HC-5. I don't want to use the headset all the time! I suppose
the tx equalizer is the place to start. I hope someone has some
settings I can put into the equalizer. I don't like listening to my
voice on another rig. The latency is distracting. I would be more
impressed by a spectral display of my voice, perhaps with sound card
software hooked up to a second receiver.

Of course the other option is to convert the GM-4 into a GM-5. But
then I'd have to set up the equalizer to mimic the HC-4 element for
pile ups or when conditions are rough.

Is there a way to save separate equalizer profiles?

 Steve N6VL

:-) The video was supposed to be just for fun and for private viewing.
Unfortunately, I mistakenly put it in a public folder when it should have
been listed for private viewing.

Those invited to the private viewing had some interesting comments, for
example

My wife saw the video and wanted to know if I really sent money to those
guys. I loved the Flex Hair video.Stop it, your scaring the
children. How do I get me one of those mirror mics? I got to the
point where you introduced the mirror mic and my computer crash from the
worst virus I've ever seen.

And who said, Flexers don't have a sense of humor.

The good news is I now know how to do Youtube videos.

A real instructional video is forthcoming. :-}

Re: [Flexradio] Noisy ATU

2007-11-16 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
Robin, The ATU is noisy but it is normal. It is a very sophisticated
circuit designed to match wide ranging loads. AS for the match indicator
in the ATU panel-it's simply no reading properly. This is a software glitch,
which Eric is looking into. Use the SWR meter indication not the ATU panel
indicator. Full power output will occur with any match from 2:1 to 1:1.

With the internal ATU and flexible drive control, you can use just about any
amp from old Heathkits, Henry, etc to modern solid state amps. I use a 40
year old homebrew 3-1000. I use the ATU to tune the 15m band switch settings
to operate on 17 meters.

Subject: [Flexradio] Production Status

Some good and bad news.

The bad news first, we didn't realize our throughput goal communicated in
the last production status update due to a variety of reasons but mostly
because of a transition from the first production run to the second and
corresponding changes in manufacturing operations.

The good news: these changes in operations will allow us to increase output
by 30%. This means we will be shipping more radios per week then we have
over the past few weeks.

We expect to fill the following open sales orders between now and Nov 16

A-models

1014,1073

1114,1118,1182,1184,1186,1187,1188,1192,1193,

1206,1207,1210,1211,1212,1217,1218,1220,1221,1222,1223,1224,1226,1227,1228,1
2291230,1234,1237,1238,1239,1241,1242,1243,1247,1249,1250,1253,1254,1261

Good news --for C-model customers. We expect to fill sales orders 900, 916,
1017, 1078, and 1081 before Nov 16

Most of management will be out of the office until Nov 6; however, our
service tech and assemblers will be hard at work building radios.

I'm not into studio sound using boom mics etc so I wondered if anyone has
found or is using a decent
hand/fist mic with a normal ptt switch. I believe Heil used to supply an
HC4/HC5 in a fist mic case but
that doesn't appear to be around any more.

On a slightly different note I see that a number of people use the Heil
Pro-set, which having used them
myself for many years is very convenient. However if you really want to
hear what the 1000/5000 is
capable of producing beg/ borrow/ buy a quality set of headphones such as
the AKG K701, the
difference is dramatic.

Subject: [Flexradio] Heil GM-4 and FLEX-5000A

I have a 5000A in route and am thinking about the inter-connections before
it arrives.

Julius, W2IHY, made up a cable for me to connect my Heil GM-4 boom mike to
the SDR-1000. It included a 1/4 inch plug that plugs directly into the
Presonus Firebox or the FA-66. Are those connections considered balanced or
unbalanced? Is the GM-4 a balanced mike?

The ideal would be to plug the 1/4 inch plug into the rear of the 5000A. I
just did a ring out of the W2IHY cable with an ohm meter and discovered that
the ring connection on the plug is not connected. I guess that means I need
to wire the cable up to the front panel mike connector. If the GM-4 is a
balanced mike, which I am unsure, then it might be possible to rewire the
1/4 inch plug to accommodate a balanced connection.

Does anyone have experience with the GM-4?

Hi all,

Ended up with failures on 160M and 10M when I went through my 1K RF amp
calibration. Was using a dummy load attached directly to the rf output
plug on the 1K. Calibration was successful on all bands except the two
mentioned. On those two bands the calibration failed with a gain of 38.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

I have a Flex-5000A and am using what I believe to be the latest versions of
the software:
F5K Firewire Driver 3.0.0.70
F5K Firmware 0.1.1.2
PowerSDR 1.10.3

When I run Power SDR 1.10.3 I see FlexRadio Systems PowerSDR Beta v1.10.3
SVN:1606 at the top.

While reading through the comments on this list, I often see a reference to
various SVN's. In one recent post, there is mention of separate TX and RX
buffer settings, which I don't see with my version.

On the website, they list the latest versions which correspond to what I
have downloaded, but the SVN is not mentioned.

Does each PowerSDR version have one corresponding SVN, or can there be
many SVN's per particular PowerSDR version.

Any further information on the version schemes would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Craig, AE7I

Re: [Flexradio] HM-xx Mic choice -- Help Solicited (repost)

2007-10-15 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
WE currently stock three different microphones

The HM-5 the handi-mic with a PTT button [a great communications microphone
with HC-5 element] and the HM-Pro-a wide response mic similar to the
Goldline [with PTT]for those who want more warmth in their audio.

Our newest product is the PR-781, a balanced all purpose mic that doesn't
have a PTT switch consequently you will need some other means to key the
radio. For additional details and pricing information please visit our web

Subject: [Flexradio] HM-xx Mic choice -- Help Solicited (repost)

I need help picking out a microphone.

I've foregone SSB operation on the SDR 1000. I had too much trouble
interfacing the microphone and the XYL doesn't like SSB operation much
anyway.

But, I'm thinking about reviving SSB with the Flex5000.

It does appear that a wider range of microphone impedances will work,
especially guestimating from the range of impedances in the various other
Heil mics that seem to have been done by others. Meanwhile, I can't even
find the cheap mic I had used before so, at least for now, that one is
out.

I'm looking at the Heil Handimike. While designed apparently with mobile
use in mind, the mp3 files on the Heil site make them sound good.

And, we have KB articles for the HC5 element. So, I could just get that
(and I'm not exactly sure exactly what else to get all the way to our
Yaesu plug or maybe the 1/4 plug on the back -- looks like CC1Y). It
would be nice to know when I order the thing -- I doubt if the AES clerk
will know.

It also appears to have a PTT button on it (not described, but pictured).
That's a small point, perhaps, but mics are simple things and some mics
appear to only have a on/off switch that disconnects the mic element only.
 Not the same.

Anyway, the site also talks about the HM Pro or pro plus and this
appears to be a different element. I don't like the sound very much, but
it appears flatter and I wonder if it would be a better match than the
HC 5 element. The HC4 appears to my ear and from its description to be
too specialized. If I want the DX sound I think I can achieve that with
the EQ (and even the handy profiles now included). But, as I don't have
actual, recent experience with SSB, I'm not sure.

Are there published frequency response curves for these mics? Couldn't see
any at Heilsound.

Should I just order the HC 5 version and have done with it? The PowerSDR
EQ, by all accounts, does such a good job, I'm tempted to try another 9
dollar mic with a foot switch and see what happens. I know some of you
audio purists will gasp, but remember that SSB isn't that big a deal for
me. I just want to do it once in a while. I certainly don't want to
spend 200 dollars on this project especially for just the mic itself. Not
for the amount of SSB I do, I don't. The HC-5 would run around 115 or so,
sans microphone stand.

I would suppose the 1/4 headphone jack to be TRS (stereo) otherwise how
could you take advantage of the BIN[ary] audio from the DSP. I find this
feature quite an advantage at times.

2007-10-01 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI

You mean you didn't get the secret password and hidden instructions for case
removal? Must have been an oversight.

Use your finger nail to pry off the sides ( look for the cutouts). Remove
the 4 torque screws on each side. Two on the top and two on the bottom. Pry
off the top and bottom covers-gently by pulling the sides of the covers
outward. You will need a T-20 torque bit.

Good luck.

Dear Flex Customers:

Individuals with the following sales orders numbers - from the first
production run in the charge credit card at time of shipment category
should expect to receive their radio in eight to ten weeks.

Early forecasts were based on the number of anticipated prepaid orders at
the time ( prepaid orders have priority); unfortunately the number of
prepaid orders has grown significantly causing additional delays. We
apologize for any inconvenience this situation has caused. If your sales
order number is listed here ( these are orders listed from the first
production run only) and you believe you are incorrectly listed, please

Re: [Flexradio] 3B7C on 75 METERS

2007-09-20 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
Joe,

Rest assured that we don't intend to forget the SDR1K owners.

The proof is in the pudding, in this case, software. Your radio is a much
better radio today than it was when you purchased it because of a steady
flow of software updates.

PowerSDR is a conglomeration of contributions from many people. As long as
they are willing and capable, we'll continue to see advancements in both
performance and features for both the SDR1K and 5000 radios.

While hanging out with a couple of my buddies on 3.846 mhz, I saw some
mayhem up frequency on
3.853 and MultiRX to see what was going on. Absolute pandemonium, so I
scrolled down to the DX
window and found 3B7C calling [S9] and listening on 3.853 mhz. I ran split
with the SDR-1000 and
got him on first call through the garbage. Line up here is an original 3
board stack with added RFE
and an outboard 100 watt amp driving a KW to a newly erected [today] dipole

at average of 70 feet.

Software version is Beta v1.10.3 SVN: 1594 and tailored audio [but not
trashy] with Heil headset.
I know I was hearing them better than most, as the stateside stations had
to
ask for repeats often.

I have been reading with interest the progress of Flex radio with the FLEX
5000 family, and fully
understand the software development plan. However, I hope they do not
forget
their roots [us lonely
SDR-1000 owners] and continue to support our Feature Requests and other
needs. A lot of us
did not invest in the FLEX 5000 right off for various reasons. Some of us
still remember the slogan
This is the last radio you will ever have to buy, but again, understand
and applaud the need for
change. I am sure the FLEX 5000 is in a lot of our future plans.

Thank you FLEX RADIO and all those that contribute to the product.

Hi crew,

Here is another strange thing I have noted since getting my Flex-5000A up
and running:

Everytime I close PowerSDR (which I always do before turning off the
Flex-5000), Vista gives me the error message: PowerSDR has stopped working
and then another dialog box pops up and asks me if I want to report it to
Microsoft. This is getting annoying.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks,

I understand that Flex is working on an internal future 2 metre transverter

yet? Will it be like the one for the SDR-1000 or more like a traditional
transverter such as the Elecraft XV-144?
I am considering getting an Elecraft XV-144 transverter for my 5000 that is
on order but if Flex is coming out with something comparable I would like
hold off.

[Flexradio] Time to eat crow but with some good news to share.

2007-09-10 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
Dear Flex Customers:

The good news:

We were able to ship most of last week's scheduled production. We still have
a few Rohs/CE radios from last weeks scheduled run to ship but hopefully
they'll get out tomorrow.

The bad news:

I failed to state that the shipping projection by sales order numbers
(listed on our web site and provided by me over a week earlier) contains a
number of non-prepaid orders. These non-prepaid, first production run,
orders will be shipped after all first production prepaid orders and before
all second production run orders.

This week, we expect to ship prepaid orders with sales order numbers between
995 and 1021. If you have a sales order number between 995 and 1021 and did
not prepay, your order will ship early October after all prepaid orders.

If you are in the prepaid group above, please send me your t-shirt size
ASAP.

Once again, I apologize for the oversight.

Hang in there the wait is worth it. You won't be disappointed.

Does anybody else have information on this subject or can give me a lead

Dave,

No B model in the works at this time but who knows what the future will
bring.

Shirts and caps will be available for sale in the next month or two.
Priority right now is to get 5000s in the hands of customers.

I'm pleased to see that the SDR-5000A is being heard on the Bands, I spoke
with my friend John (W5GI) on 20M, signals were not that great (5/7). even

Now, I have a question, and perhaps there's a reason for this, there'll be
an SDR-5000A, SDR-5000C, and an SDR-5000D, what happened to the SDR-5000B

Is B like the number 13, or is there a particular reason for not labelling
a Rig as a B model. Perhaps B is associated with Beta
Also, when will we be able to purchase Caps and T-Shirts from Flex?. Would
be great to have them, so that we as Flexer's, can promote these great
products at swop meets across the globe. Its rather lonely here in South
Africa, being the only SDR-1000 owner, hi !

Looking forward to hearing the response with regards the above

I think Phil is pretty close. I think the A was because it was first, the C
was for computer, and the D was for Deluxe. ;)

The FLEX-5000B (as in Baking model with the toaster slots, oven-style door,

testing. It seems that the combination of fresh gourmet food, caffeine, and
the excitement of operating a FLEX-5000 caused the users to never sleep.

Subject: [Flexradio] PowerSDR Beta 1.91 - how to install two copies?

How can I install two independent copies of PowerSDR 1.91 Beta?

Details:

I already have 1.91 set up and operating with my SDR-1000 using Delta-44
card.

I am installing Janus/Ozy hardware and wanted to set up another copy
of 1.91 in a different subdirectory, keeping the original Beta intact.

BUT - the only options I have on trying to install a new copy (even
freshly downloaded to a different download directory than the
original) is to either Repair or Remove the original. It doesn't
permit me to install to a new directory.

Never had this problem before installing different versions while
keeping prior version intact.

wireless-LAN. I added a wireless mouse for added flexibility

I'm using the SVN Power SDR 1422 and the FLEX-5000 operating at 192 KHz.

Performance is on a par with my P4 3.2 GHz solo core HP machine. CPU% is
slightly higher than the PC but I haven't optimized the laptop yet.

Talk about the ultimate portable station

FLEX-5000+ Super duper lap top for $3100.

It doesn't get any better than this.

I will have the above setup at ARRL National Convention in Huntsville next

I think the key is the agere controller chip so a via is not the best
choice (many of the embedded firewire ports are via chips).

Anyway, if you have a firewire card, try it first, then order is the
recommendation from Tim. I had some time on my hands so ordered it
just to stay active while waiting ([plus I found some for
close-out). I now see they were on closeout because they are
discontinued.

If you are looking for a new card, look for an agere controller chip!

That link in the article to the Syba product (first specific product)
appears to be obsolete as of this morning. I get an empty page.

Worse, it's hard to figure out exactly what's going on here.

Apparently, the part number has changed, too.

What appears to be the same card is listed here:

 http://www.syba/com/Product/Info/Id/26

Note that there is _also_ an identical looking card based on the VIA
chipset. Now, the KB article frowns upon VIA. But, the card itself is
nearly identical (in fact, is visually identical until you see the big
VIA logo on the chipset itself -- the card shape and connectors are
 virtually identical).

I was halfway to ordering it from newegg.com before I looked closer. I
would rate Syba as confusing at the moment. Too bad, because they seem
to put out a lot of product.

At the moment, I haven't found the proper product from Syba.

Does anyone have status of the Sherwood Engineering testing of the SDR1k? I
seem to remember that Flex sent him one for inclusion in his table.

I think that practice gives subjective data though and since I own the top
radio in the Sherwood table (Orion2) as well as the SDR1K, plus I use the
Flex 5 times more than the Orion2, its obvious that I believe its a better
receiver.

I must say that the O2 sounds mighty sweet though, I found the last 2
firmware releases to really make it shine.

Something else to bear in mind is that measures like IP3 are really
aimed at characterization of analog components like amplifiers where
the non-linearity has a specific form. The IP3 value itself is
derived from extrapolating a presumed third order distortion product
at low levels up to higher levels. Likewise, P1dB assumes sort of
gradual gain AM/AM gain compression at the high end.

If the nonlinearities, and particularly, the saturation behavior,
aren't like a simple amplifier, then the value of a measurement like
P1dB or IP3 is less valid, particularly for systems with very high
performance (that is, clearly a device with a IP3 of -10 dBm is worse
than one with an IP3 of +50dBm... but comparing +49 and +50 isn't so
useful), and MOST PARTICULARLY, if the nonlinearities come from
sources other than the smooth transfer curve of some device. In a
system with an A/D and digital processing that uses a lot of bits and
has a half way decent filter in front of the A/D so that outofband
aliasing isn't a problem, the dynamic range issues (noise on the
bottom end, saturation on the top) will not necessarily have the
classic behavior characterized by P1dB and IP3 on the top or
additive white gaussian noise on the bottom.

KF6DX had a series of articles in the last few issues of QEX
discussing receiver performance measurements that talks about some of
this. There's also always articles in trade magazines like
Microwaves and RF or High Frequency Electronics or Microwave
Journal that discuss the complexities of coming up with single
figure of merit kinds of numbers for systems with lots of digital
processing and more than one signal in the analog passband.

I will send emails to groups of 30 at a time requesting shirt size and
operating info. My intent is to dispatch the subject email 1 week before
shipping. The first 30 notifications went out about 10 days ago; however,
the ship date has slipped once again (see Gerald's weekly update.)

I have attempted to provide queue data to individuals; however, in almost
every case, the estimate proved to be wrong because of the reasons reported
by Gerald in his weekly updates.

In a few instances, individuals have asked to delay or change their ship
date because of travel plans.

NO radio will be shipped until we receive confirmation from the customer,
i.e. a response to the email referenced above.

Please direct any questions concerning the above directly to me.

Subject: [Flexradio] FLEX-5000 Production Status Update

Dear FLEX-5000 customers,

Last week I posted the following message to the reflector regarding
production status:
http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio@flex-radio.biz/msg17022.html.

Last week we believed that we would be able to begin first shipments of
production units this week. While it is technically possible to meet that
expectation, we believe it is in the best interest of our customers that we
take the time necessary to complete final analysis and tweaking of the
production test/calibration software. Since this is a Software Defined
radio, an automated process aligns all but a single control. This
information is stored in EEPROM on the FLEX-5000(TM) to be read into
PowerSDR(TM) when loaded for the first time. With the exception of power
bridge calibration, which requires an external automated power meter, the
FLEX-5000 can test and align itself. Design and coding of the test software
is in many ways as complex and sophisticated as the PowerSDR software that
runs the radio.

In the process of developing and using the test/calibration software, we
have discovered a number of key tweaks we want and/or need to make before
the radio ships. Here are some of the key improvements remaining to be
implemented:

1) Accurate SWR calibration by band
2) Automated PA gain balancing
3) Optimal bias settings
4) Multi-point carrier balancing
5) Transverter control
6) Thorough testing of the test/alignment software
7) A few other odds and ends

We now have a queue of final assemblies that have passed initial tests and
are awaiting the final test and alignment software described above. Unless
we discover any issues in the final test process, the radios will then go to
on-air testing before being shipped.

I will plan to send an update to the reflector on Monday July 30th to let
you know where we stand on this process.

Thanks to you all,
Gerald

We currently carry two external knobs. About 30 percent of our customers buy
one of the two controllers with knobs. Eighty percent of them report that
after a week or so, they no longer need the knob because a mouse is
sufficient. Having said that, we are continuously evaluating different
devices for those slaved to traditional methods of tuning and controlling a
radio. Some habits are just hard to break.

Elan,

The B1 is a +48 VDC condenser mic and the EQplus does not provide the
necessary voltage to run the mic. You will need to add the voltage
in-line to get it to work.

Any balanced microphone (Heil, Shure, AT, etc...) will work file. A
condenser mic that only needs +5 VDC, like the iCM from Heil will work
well too.

Always check the KB for the answers to your questions. There is a lot
of good info; you just need to do a simple key work search. My search
returned several Knowledge Base articles about different mics you can
review.

software defined radio on the map.

We are working with a subcontractor to provide a variety of affordable logo

I might add that we extended the warranty on all SDR-1000s to two-years as a

Re: [Flexradio] FLEX-5000 Production Update

2007-06-20 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
It is our practice not to discuss business matters on the Reflector;
however, the quantities can be generalized as in the hundreds. A
significant percentage of Flex-5000 buyers are or have been SDR-1000 owners
because they already understand the value and performance of software
defined radios. The number of orders from first time SDR buyers is
substantial and very gratifying. The demand for open source software
defined radios is exceptionally high.

A large batch of transceivers is going to Europe because the interest across
the pond has been great as well. WE also recently added a vendor in
Australia.

Due to the overwhelming interest in the FLEX-5000, orders for transceivers
are already being taken for the second production run, so if you are
interested in getting a radio before fourth quarter 2007, you probably want
to place an order soon before the second production run is sold out.

A big thanks to everyone who has shown an interest in the FLEX-5000.
These sure are exciting times for Flexers-both old and new.

It might be interesting water-cooler fodder if the members had some idea
what the typical production run quantity is. I don't recall seeing a
number in past posts but maybe I missed it. It might also be interesting
for the wow effect, what approximate percentage of existing SDR-1000
users are either upgrading or getting in addition to, versus new, 1st
time Flex users. At least for me, when I support a product line, I get
curious whether the existing customer base is growing by some measurable
amount.

 Dear FLEX-5000 Customers:

As I am getting ready for my departure for Hamradio 2007 in
 Friedrichshaffen
Germany this afternoon, I would like to give everyone an update on
 the
 FLEX-5000A production status.

 1. Thanks to your wonderful response, our first production run is
 sold out.
We are now taking orders for the next production run to be available
 in the
 second half of September.

 2. In the last couple of days we received the front and back panels
 that
were the final items required for completion of assembly.
 Unfortunately, we
had to reject the panels due to problems with hole alignment on the
 back
panel and silk screening on both panels. We are working with our
 vendor to
achieve a quick resolution. They have assured us that they will
 correct the
problem and will get us replacement panels in a timely manner. The
 decision
to reject the panels was made yesterday so we are awaiting a
 definitive
schedule for replacement from our vendor. At this time we do not
 expect a
significant delay to our shipping schedule.

 3. The first article production unit was assembled and successfully
 tested
yesterday. It will travel with me to Germany as a demo unit.

 4. On the software front, beta testers are on the air on all modes
 using the
latest SDR-X SVN release. The focus of our current software efforts
 are on
automated production test and calibration. We are excited about the
potential for cool enhancements extending years into the future.
 Worthy of
note is the fact that some of the automated calibration work done
 for the
FLEX-5000 has already improved calibration of the SDR-1000. We
 expect to
continue to find enhancements that will benefit both platforms which
 share
 PowerSDR GPL Open Source Software.

 5. I look forward to seeing many of you in Friedrichshaffen this
 weekend.

Re: [Flexradio] audio punch

2007-06-04 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
It simply is in the adjustments. Traditional amateur radios have
pre-emphasis in the audio, i.e there is a certain amount of bass already
there. The SDR1K is flat as a pancake. When you add bass, either externally
or with the built-in EQ, you are simply adding pre-emphasis.

The SDR1k was designed to be flat just like a commercial broadcast
transmitter.

Hello, please stop this. :-)
I dont want any discussion around ESSB / and or DX-pileups modulation. Whats
best etc.
My point is only to state the fact that SDR-1000 handle bass-less modulation
much
less punchy than other traditional transceivers, f.example my TS-870 or
IC-746PRO.
Same power-meter used. Thats it! If there is an explanation I would like to
hear...

Stig and Jim,

Dale is telling the plain truth, if your main interest is getting your
signal through in noisy conditions and DX pileups. The basses convey
very little speach information, but eat up the limited power of your
transmitter. Unless you want to broadcast a Hi-Fi music program on ham
bands use a good quality multi-channel equalizer to attenuate the
lower frequencies of your modulation. And if you want real information
carrying audio punch, you may use a PROPERLY MADE compressor or even
RF clipper. However, never use compressors and/or clippers, if the the
basses are not attenuated.

Almost four years' time already I have tried to convince our Flex
software wizards and gurus to implement an integrated audio processor
that would enhance the speech signal intelligibility in noise at least
as well as explained in the following ancient articles. Sorry for
this repeated use of the bandwidth, but please, please, read carefully
and understand these:
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/ahti/sdr-1000/filtclip.pdf
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/ahti/sdr-1000/speechproc.pdf

My understanding is that these functions can be implemented by the DSP
means much more elegantly than 30 years ago by the hardware means. I
sincerely hope that some of our software experts would take my request
seriously.

Good morning!

John, W5GI sounded great during our QSO yesterday afternoon, while he was
using his Beta Vs. 5000a.

Question to Eric: Is it true that you will soon re- incorporate the ten-band

EQ in replacement of the three band EQ now present in the existing v 1.8.0
and v.1215? If so when should this happen?

We recommend any of the Pro series microphones offered by Heil. You will
need a XLR to TRS [1/4 inch Stereo plug] cable-available at Radio Shack or
just about any ProAudio store. You then can use the Balanced input on the
rear of the 5000. We use the PR-40 mic in our labs.

I see that Flex offers a Heil hand-held mike to suit the FLEX-5000, but
I don't want a hand-held: I'd rather have a boom mike or a headset mike.

So which other Heil models would be suitable for the FLEX-5000? Which

Or which other makes and models altogether?

Time to start something. Why doesn't Flex offer on their products page a
vendor that would offer Flex mugs, baseball caps and other things, (pens,
t-shirts, etc.) I know my SDR-1000 would run better if I was drinking my
coffee out of a Flex mug or instead of an Icom hat, I could wear my Flex
baseball cap, which would provide more protection. These are must-needed
items every Flex would want, and what the heck, the added advertising would
get the word out for FlexRadio. What do others think? Or should I crawl back

Is Flex going to have the 100 Watt amplifiers for the SDR-1000
available at Dayton? While we are at it how about the Edirol Sound cards?

We wonders, yes we wonders , Precious!

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000 pwr rating for 100% duty for digitalmodes?

2007-05-09 Thread John P Basilotto W5GI
It does put out 100 watts in all modes. Continuous duty and full duty cycle
mean different things to different people. The SDR-1000 and FLEX-5000 are
rated at 100 watts intermittent service just like all the other
manufacturer's radios in the 100 watt class.

I recommend you read the section on Duty Cycle in the ARRL handbook.

AM is a different animal. The continuous rating specification is typically
25% of peak power at 100 % modulation.

Even an Icom 718 for $500 bucks puts out 100 watts on RTTY. A 100 watt
PA should be in a $2500 rig. Why isn't it?

As respects the Flex 5000, what is the recommended 100% duty cycle power
output for modes such as RTTY, MFSK, and AM?

Thanks.

I wonder if Sherwood is interested in testing SDR1k or 5k
radios as there is no way to get this radio's better with their
verry good filters, they do not fit in.
I hope however they will do..

The reported Flex-5000 2-kHz 105-dB IM3 figures are very impressive and
would land at #2 on W8JI's rx performance chart if tested by Tom and
assuming the figures hold:

 http://w8ji.com/receiver%20IM3%20sorted.htm

A figure I don't see reported for the Flex-5000 is wide or narrow Blocking
Dynamic Range. According to the ON4UN Low-Band DXing book this ought to be
120-dB for serious low band DXing and contesting. W8JI reports 10-kHz BDR
numbers and the Sherwood tests rated several current hi-perf rigs 130 dB
100-kHz BDR with Orion at 137-dB and the IC-7800 at 135-dB.

 http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

Surprised that the SDR-1000 was never tested by Sherwood, hope the Flex-5000
will make it to this lab. Most of the contesters/serious DXers I know
respect the Sherwood (and W8JI) tests and pay closer attention to these
tests than the ARRL lab reports which seem aimed at a more general ham
audience.

Bill NT1Y
