Hi Steve,

You are right that PowerSDR is a mature package, and I can understand why
the primary engineering
emphasis would be on SmartSDR. However, there are still a few issues to be
addressed. One, primarily
for those of us who use it for satellite and/or VHF/UHF Winlink is the
ability to operate at 9600 baud
and up on FM digital modes. Gerald has committed to getting that resolved
for us. There are a few

other quirks as well, but not ones most people would encounter.

In fact I'm glad that it is there for those who want to use it. It's that
“FlexRadio” and “FlexEdge” were started to help FlexRadio

customers with problems and information about advances. Now it sounds like
they may be abandon for Facebook and no one told us

It's a little disappointing knowing that information was given out there and

This has happened to me twice. All I did was turn off the computer

The amended 60-meter regs go into effect on March 5. We're going to need
PSDR changes by then to permit CW, the allowed digital modes and the change

Eric,
It MAY be because VAC is misconfigured... Before you press the
start button, turn VAC off then start.
If that works then go to the VAC tab and select Valid Virtual cables for
the driver you have selected..
( System type ports may not work with the WDM-KS driver ) and then
re-enable VAC.

[Flexradio] Power SDR 2.2.3 no longer works

2012-02-03 Thread Stan Grigaliunas
I have been running F3k, W7 64bit with 6g of mem for the past 14 months without
any problems. Two days ago, when I went to bring Power SDR up I got the
following:

As soon as I click on the short cut icon, a window pops up with a FATAL ERROR.
Inside the window there is a title: Root Element is missing.

Under the title there are 11 lines listing the errors. The first 7 lines start
with... at System.Xml.XmlTextReaderImpl.Throw(Exception e) .

The last 3 lines start with:.. at PowerSDR.Master.Init() ... and so on...

After I click ... Ok.the window closes and another one opens saying Power
SRD stop working Windows is checking for Solution then window closes
and that is the end.

I removed and reinstalled Power SDR 2.2.3 three times... no joy
I changed out the Fire wire card. no joy

I hooked the F3k to my Gateway W7 32bit 2g laptop running 2.2.3. It worked
GOOD! ... CPU usage in RX mode between 35-55%

Now I am lost, what to do next, what to check and fix next. Anyone have any
suggestions ???

Posting here first, will post on eHam.net this weekend.

Flex-5000A with Tuner.

Heil HM-5 Microphone (HC-5 element).

Mic cable, 8ft.

PCIe FireWire card (SIIG with TI chip).

FireWire cable, two each: Granitedigital 1 meter and the one that came
with the radio.

Original carton.

Non-smoking environment.

Look up my call on qrz and you can see it.

I purchased this radio with the hopes that it would spur my lagging
interest in the hobby; it didn't really; so it has not seen much use in
the 13 months I've had it. I have used it on SSB, CW, PSK31, and WSPR,
all without issues. Really great radio.

$2900 for the lot, at this juncture the price is firm.  Shipping to
lower 48 included.

2011-09-06 Thread Stan Burks
I have been using and enjoying my Flex 1500 for almost a year now. Tonight I
tuned in on P49T on 40 CW. When I started to call him the rig just quit. After
a couple of minutes of troubleshooting I found the fuse was blown. I replaced
it and tried again, a second fuse has blown. I have checked everything there is
to check and can find no shorts or antenna problems. Any ideas?

Stig,

I have been very impressed with the Flex-1500?s audio system accuracy.
Because the direct-conversion signal goes directly into a CODEC to be
digitized, there is no string of IF and AF amplifiers to affect the signal.
>From the CODEC, the digitized signal goes via USB to the PC at a maximum
sample rate of 48,000 samples per second.  From the Power SDR application, I
then use VAC (Virtual Audio Cables) to distribute the audio to other
applications, so again, the frequency response is ?digital? flat from near 0
Hz to almost 24,000 Hz.  I just ran a test using PSDR?s built-in noise
generator and DL4YHF?s Spectrum Lab for signal analysis.  The software
generated white noise traveled across the USB cable, D/A in the CODEC, A/D
in the same CODEC, and back across the USB cable.  The measured frequency
response was flat within ? Hz form near 0 Hz to almost 24 kHz.  I will send
the spectrum graph to you directly.

The Flex-1500 used the Texas Instruments TLV320AIC33 CODEC.  Here is the
datasheet link so you can see all of the specifications:

Hello,

I'm considering buying a Flex-1500, but somebody here has complained about

the audio.

I don't know if that is a user-problem, newbie that don't know how to

configure it right, or if the audio amplifier used in it is bad, or

broken.(?)

I would require a flat audio curve within the SSB passband I set up.

Can I expect that from a Flex-1500?

Also on TX?

OK all you Flex Guru's,  here's what I would like to do.  I would like to
run HRD and Bob's S meter at the same time.  The problem I am having is they
can't share the same virtual com port.  In Power SDR I assign a virtual com
port created in Comm0Comm to Cat Control.  If I use the Comm0Comm mated com
port,  I can get HRD working and Bob's S meter working but not both at the
same time.  There is a conflict when each program asks for the same port.
Can I do this?
Thanx

The memory.xml file is not written to disk until PowerSDR shuts down
properly. Before that the memories are stored in memory.

Can you do this for me. Open up PowerSDR, add a memory and shut down
PowerSDR. Then send me a copy of the memory.xml file it created. We
want to take a look at the file structure.

I have learned from doing it wrong many times. If you make a change
in SDR, make a clean exit of the program and it will be saved. If you
crash out of the program, many things you changed before the crash will
not be saved.

The complete list of features and bug fixes for a particular release are

for PowerSDR v2.1.5 are listed below in Greg's e-mail announcements.

TNF (Tracking Notch Filter) is a feature we are still working on
finalizing, as we have added some additional enhancements to it since
the "sneak peak" at Dayton and is slated for a future official release

1. There is now an optional installation of the new FlexControl™ driver.
Important: Please read the FlexControl Installation Errata Sheet

2. FM has been completely redesigned including CTCSS tones, improved
modulation/demodulation, soft limiting, FM squelch and more.

3. FM now has a dedicated Repeater Mode that allows you to set positive
and
negative offsets along with the frequency offset. Split mode is no

Thanks to so many of you who have continued to provide constructive

[Flexradio] Flex 1500 Audio Problems

2011-07-11 Thread Stan Burks
My Flex 1500 has worked flawlessly for about a year. Yesterday while listening
to 17M CW I started hearing a strange distortion in my speakers and the the
complete receiver was blanked by this distortion. I tried to shut PowerSDR down
but all I got was a strange LOUD tone. Any ideas on what may be happening? The
problem repeated itself several times throughout the afternoon.

Re: [Flexradio] MultiPSK and FLDigi

2010-12-30 Thread Stan
Well I guess I got to keep trying then. I must be missing something very
simple. I am using the Flex5000A and Logger32 as a rule and love PSK as well.
Not QRP as a rule but low power, like 30 watts. But I want to set up a sked on
Olivia and Logger does not have that mode.

I agree fldigi rocks! First time around I got mine going, and pretty much has
every mode you would use. I run a FLEX 1500 QRP that's right QRP, mostly BPSK31
and RTTY. The bands of choice are 20,30,and 40 meters. If I can hear them I
can wk them state side and DX. Antenna T-6 LPA 20 up and a Mosley RV-4C 1/4
ground mounted vertical with 25 redials.

I have a 50w brick it's sent off for repairs. Hell I might just sale the thing
when comes back I'm having so much fun QRP!

I was struck by two things at the show yesterday.

1. The average age of the attendees. Most looked like they were around
retirement age.
 - not so good for ham radio's future. Some attitudes never change.

2. How busy the Flex booth was.
 - very good for Flex. Nice to meet you Tim.

I like FLEX - no I love FLEX, so that is why I am putting so much effort
into questioning the "60 Watt Factory Installed" as the standard VHF-UHF
upgrade offering. I could be wrong!!!

I've had an order in for a very long for the VHF-UHF upgrade, I assumed
that 30 watts would be the standard. When I received the actual invoice
from Julie - it showed 60 watt was on order. That was not correct - I
wonder how many other advance orders were incorrectly assumed to be for
the 60 watt version??? Am I the only one? Please let FLEX know what
version of the VHF-UHF you actually want to buy. It may be a simple
accounting glitch.

I did a quick survey of VHF and UHF amplifier drive requirements; here is
what I found...

Henry 2000 series 25-35 watts input for 800-1000w out

CommanderII ( Palstar ) 10-15 watts nominal, 30 watts max for full output.

Tokyo High Power HL350Vdx 10w / 25w / 50w Manual select - note you must
install a bank of attenuator
resistors for 25 watt input and two banks of attenuator resistors for 50 w
input.

Tokyo High Power HL500V 20W / 50W , Manual Select - note you must install
a bank of attenuator

resistors for 50 watt input

Tokyo High Power HL250UFX 10W / 20W / 50W Manual select - note you must
install a bank of attenuator
resistors for 20 watt input and two banks of attenuator resistors for 50 w
input.

ITB - I0JXX
350MOD144 5 watts in for 350 watts out
500MOD144 3 watts in for 500 watts out
1000MOD144 10 watts in for 1000 watts out
300MOD432 5 watts in for 300 watts out

VK4DD BLF248-MARK-II: 30 watts in for 600-700w out
VK4DD BLF248-PA: 15 Watts in for 300-350w out

Communication Concepts CCI/Motorola/Helge Granberg Amplifiers for 144 MHz:
AR305 15w input for 300w out
AR313 15w input for 300w out

As VE3KH correctly points out, Yes the Henry 3000 series VHF / UHF
amplifier, and similar home brew amps do need considerably more drive.
Thanks, Kevin, and nice to meet you - hope to work you on the air soon.

"...the Flex-1500 for below $700 is a fine example."

This is actually a very poor example. The FLEX-1500 is designed as a
compromise SDR. It will have limited sampling rates and lower receive
performance. The V/U module is anything but a compromise upgrade for the
FLEX-5000.

The V/U module is designed to be a high performance VHF/UHF addition to
the FLEX-5000. It has to compliment the already existing high performance
HF transceiver. Check out the specifications. It will incorporate class
A PA bricks and has a very good noise figure as well.

And, you can not look at the material cost of the module alone. In
addition to the engineering expense that goes into producing the V/U
module, there is also the software expense that goes into integrating it
into PowerSDR along with the additional software features to use it like
adding tones for FM repeater and satellite operation and inverted split
operation for SSB sats.

FlexRadio has always priced their products competitively and there is no
reason to believe that they would not continue that practice.

I am one who has been waiting patiently for the V/U Upgrade to be designed

purchase. We all know Flex can design and build quality "stuff" at a low
price, the Flex-1500 for below $700 is a fine example. I will be
disappointed if the price for the low power V/U Upgrade is higher than
$700.

Well, think about it...how much does the transverter pair of a DEMI
60-watt 2m and 50-watt 70cm cost? I'd say that a price under a kilobuck
for the integrated 60-watt V/U upgrade would be a bargain.

I own one each of the DEMI high-power boxes, so I do know exactly how much
they cost. The pair was well over a kilobuck. I'll probably continue
using them, too...at least for a while.

Dan KB5MY/6

That price range does not surprise me. I wouldn't even be surprised if
the 30-watt version is closer to $700 and the 60-watt version $900 or
so.

Note to Gerald: That's not what I *want* to pay, but I'll try to
understand if you tell me that that's what I *have* to pay.

First off, let me reiterate that the TEST SVN is just that. It is a
development TEST environment and as such, the code there is beta at bet but
mostly alpha. One should NEVER use it for production operation of the
radio. Use this SVN branch only for testing and you should always read the
SVN log before doing any update. SVN TEST should only be used for people who
are actively and purposely testing new software features and providing
feedback to the developers. Utor per cautio!

The TRUNK is what you want to use for the latest stable fixes beyond the
released versions.

What happened is that the Access database was surgically removed form
PowerSDR in favor of using XML. As such, all previous Access database
settings were not preserved. The database is still there, it is just no
longer used. You can move that database to the v1.18.0 production version
of PowerSDR to recover your settings.

I have not fired up the radio in a couple of weeks. I just upgraded all the
"TEST" files and started SDR 5000. I seem to have lost EVERYTHING! Even the
vCAT and VAC settings are gone. All the memories are gone. The vCAT and VAC
software settings are messed up. The driver settings are messed up. Anybody
got any idea what might have happened? I didn't pay any attention to the
"TEST" files that were upgraded, I just downloaded them and tried to run the

Thanks

Re: [Flexradio] New PC build

2009-04-21 Thread Stan

Hi Joe,
Below is what I built for the Flex5000. All from Newegg. I also purchased a
PCI Firewire card and discarded it as the on-board firewire input was much
better. I know this is not the road you are looking at but maybe will help
in some way. Seems to work great for me! The video card is dual DVI output
because I use two HD monitors.

I decided to upgrade from my Dell 8400 dual core PC to a new custom build.
This will be my station PC to also run my Flex 5000A. I like overbuilt
systems that are somewhat RF free.

Before I plop down $500-$600 on the components, I would feel better if some
of the gurus here would confirm or correct me in any items I have chosen to
go with. NewEgg seems to have everything in stock.

Already have 2 WD internal SATA HDs and 2 DVD R/W.
Set in to an Antec 300 all metal case.

Re: [Flexradio] VAC change sound device #'s

2009-02-14 Thread Stan
I just checked the default sound device and it is the Realtek mother board
device. I changed it to VAC some time ago and it must have changed back on
it's own I guess. I will set it back to the VAC, maybe that will fix it.

On second thought it might shut off the computer sounds and I don't really
want that either. Anyway I will play with that. Thanks Tim.

I expected that it would likely be a Windows issue.

This is primarily a Windows issue. It is the function of the operating
system to enumerate and maintain the device IDs for the sound card devices.
Something is causing Windows to re-enumerate the available sound card device
IDs whereby changing the ID numbers. What sound card is designated as your
default sound card?

I am using Logger32 for a logging and sound card software. Sometimes when I
open PowerSDR and the Logger32 software the sound devices change in the
device #'s in Logger32. The Device #'s remain the same in Logger32 but the
associated sound devices change. I am using VAC for sound.

When this happens the sound device will sometimes change to Realtek (the
motherboard sound card) and sometimes to the Flex sound device that I know
nothing about, I have never played with that.

It is not a real problem I can correct it quickly but I would like to know
what is causing this. Hopefully I have explained it clearly enough.

Hello Tim and others

Thanks for your help.

Well, things did improve when I turned on the emulate baud rate and enable
buffer overrun. However, after about a minute or two the connection
between

HRD and PowerSDR shuts down. Sometimes I get an error that says a system
resource has shut down or is missing and PowerSDR completely shuts down.
In
fact I have to kill the left over process in task manager before I get it
to

run again.

I am running PowerSDR version 1.17.0 SVN 2662 and com0com 2.2.0.0

Any other ideas??

Make sure you are using the latest version of com0com (2.2.0.0).
Since it is working with mixw you may have to use portmon to capture the
messages between PowerSDR & HRD to see what is going on.

Re: [Flexradio] Source for Quality Firewire Cables

2009-01-17 Thread Stan
Well the prices on the Granite cables are not that bad Tim. And I just
looked at the specs on the CableWholesale Firewire cables and the wire size
is 4-#30 and 2-#22, so there is a difference. And to my surprise the shield
is 90% braid on the CableWholesale.

All of the many serial and din and mini din etc cables that I have purchased
here have been foil shielded.

So in this case after reading the specs I would probably buy the Granite
Firewire cables. But for a $1.90 it might be worth a try.

I bet a 6 foot firewire from Monster would be $50 plus.

Good info, Thanks...

I am NOT arguing the quality of the cables that you are talking about just
want to add my 2 cents. I have been buying computer cables for a long time
from Cables Wholesale. The are cheap compared to others. I have cut many
cables apart to make custom stuff. The cables are foil shielded and well
made. I don't think that there is a better shield than foil. If you needed
the ferrite beads you could easily add them to the cable. The wire size may
differ and be a concern sometimes I expect. But with 3 or 6 foot cables I
doubt there is a concern.

The 6P/6P 6 ft. cable is $1.90 each.

I am in no way connected to this company, just want to say that I have had
good luck with the cables and so far have not seen a better price.

"Monster" cables are incredibly high priced. I don't recall for sure off
hand but I think the Monster HDMI 6 foot is like $50 or more. I would like
for someone to tell me what might make them worth that. The cheap one is
like $10 or $12 bucks maybe.

No, not at all. The supplied Firewire cable is of very good quality.
These are the "Cadillac" of Firewire cables and can provide some
additional immunity to RFI in high RF environments.

Mark is dead on right. These *are* very good cables. The shielding and

To all Flexers!

For those who receive QST, you will find the results form the ARRL 2008
UHF contest in the upcoming Feb 09 edition. The winner of the SOHP
category is none other than our own Mike KM0T (http://www.km0t.com/).
This makes FIVE years in a row that Mike has won his category! He had the
top score (354,708 points) of all fixed stations (even multi-op) and was
only barely beaten for the top spot by a mere 11K points from a mobile
(rover) station.

He uses the FLEX-5000 and two SDR-1000s to feed all of his transverters.

We hope to have some updated shack pics soon so everyone can check out his
award winning operating position.

A BIG congratulations to Mike on this incredible accomplishment!

One other thing. You need a "clean" default database where the only
things setup are sampling rate (96KHz), buffer size (1024) and the
Antenna selection set to simple mode and RX1/TX on ANT-1 and RX2 on RX-1
TAP.

If that doesn't work try doing a radio hardware reset.

Also, what operating system are you using?

Heres some thoughts!
1. Did you reboot your computer after installing 1.16.1? I understood from
Dudleys note that it was required.
2. Did you follow all the steps in the KC article (no antenna connected,
dummy load on ant 1, rx2 set to rx1 tap, driver set to 96000/1024, nothing
else running on your computer)?

I just upgrade to the latest firmware and 1.16.1. Now every RX test,
including the general tests, fail on every band. I've run this test several
times in the past. I followed the instructions explicitly, twice.

Please advise.

Same problem here with the new firmware 1.3.0 and SVN 2496. Could not run
PowerSDR. Went back to firmware 1.2.9 and all is well again.
I think we just got ahead of things and will be updated by tomorrow. We
are just too quick on the draw when it comes to updates.

I too cannot run the Flex 5000 using 1.3.0.0 firmware with latest SVN
(version 1.70.0 build 2496). Tells me I need to upgrade. Expecting
1.2.0.3+

but radio has 1.3.0.0. Hmmm PowerSDR cannot do math

I downgraded to version 1.2.08 firmware (I do not have a 2nd receiver) and
I

am able to run latest PowerSDR.

I attempted to do the following:

Upgrade firmware to 1.3.0.0
Uninstall Flex driver
Installed Flex firewire driver
Download PowerSDR 1.16.0.
Install in new folder.

PowerSDR comes up with an error it needs version 1.2.0.3+ firmware and
current version is 1.3.0.0

Re: [Flexradio] audio

2008-11-26 Thread Stan

Thanks Dudley,
This will be my mission today.

This computer is dedicated to Ham stuff so Skype and IM etc are not
involved. I even removed Echolink from this computer. I will check out the
other sounds from the computer. But I guess normally there would not be any
computer sounds generated while using the radio. I do have the radio audio
output on separate speakers. I run the radio audio through NCS gear and
speech intelligibility enhancers so that I can hear better.

Stan,

Generally you do not make VAC your default sound device. Normally you
want the computer and radio separated, just be aware that your computer
default sounds will go out over the air when in the digital mode. Also
if you use Skype, the mic audio from the computer sound will go out over
digital modes..
Personally I keep the computer sounds on separate speakers from the radio
speakers. If you want to combine them, you can use some computer
speakers that have two inputs.

Why do you need to have VAC as the default sound device? I have Ham

It may just be a configuration problem.

[Flexradio] panadapter scallop design

2008-11-15 Thread Stan

This panadapter is new to me so I have never seen such a thing. There are
some severe storms approaching the area although not very close. My
panadapter display looks like the scalloped edge of a table cloth or
something. EVERY 10KHz the signal peaks and there is a squawking noise at
the peaks. No signals and this is on EVERY HF band.

Is it the storm or is there some other creepy thing going on?

I found a small item that I would like to request. :-)

Would it be feasible to allow the user to define the "group" in the memory
save? Or maybe you could add more groups to be selected like PSK, CW, RTTY,
etc...

I am still totally green with this radio but learning slowly, so far I love
it.

[Flexradio] Interesting Noise

No one asked that it be fixed for free. Flex could have issued an ECO which
cost $XX - I don't have a problem paying for upgrades to my radio if it
actually corrects a problem. BUT as far as I know, no attempt was made to my
knowledge or was the issue even addressed that I know of by Flex.

Do you see anyone from Flex defending themselves here or offering any
solution? I am still waitng for some "Official" statement from Flex on this
problem. I don't see how this could have "slipped" by the Flex technical
staff.
Did'nt anyone at Flex check any of the radios that were produced to see if
there was any issues with them?

I would think when you have a production run you pull a few radios from the
run and check them completely to make sure they are being built correctly.
But this was'nt a production problem, this was a DESIGN issue.

How do you miss something like this?

>

sure it is, this problem never should have made it into a production run.

Maybe in your opinion, but there have been many owners ask whats up with this
issue. Either you don't have the problem or don't care that your radio
does'nt work as advertised.

is that right! Funny my 930 doesnt have these issues.
Why do you keep buying radios that have problems?

no radio is perfect, but the issue many of us are complaining about you
obviously either don't have or just don't care if your money purchased a
radio which is somewhat less than what you expected.

Then again maybe your radio works as advertised and you really don't give a
damn.

Re: [Flexradio] Interesting noise

2007-05-29 Thread Stan
This is an issue that should have been taken care of by Flex.
Many not just a few owners seem to have this problem.
Its obvious to me that Flex had the new radio in mind instead of responding
to a serious design deficiency.
Now Flex wants us to buy into the new radio. Will they be willing to fix
design deficiencies such as this one? Or will we be left hanging again?

Re: [Flexradio] Contesting and Focus

2006-09-29 Thread Stan
I recall that it did work that way, as I had a similar setup using N1MM.
Also recall myself and the Belize station as possibly being the first contest
to contest QSO for SDR's.

I will be on 75 meters this year single op single band with the same setup as
last year. SDR-1000, N1MM, a 75 meter vertical and a KW.

Last nite a half hour before sunset here (using the SDR) ZS6CCY came in here
on 75 - both of us in the grey line. He was 57 I was 59.

I tried him with 100 watts first and he could hear me but not well enough to
make the contact as there were many stations from mainland USA calling him.

I turned on the afterburner and first call got me thru.

The SDR is a good radio, it still has a few hardware issues which I hope get
addressed soon. I just wish more attention would be paid to these issues
instead of the software. A bit more attention to these HW issues and I think
this will be the best radio for the money ever in ham radio.

Re: [Flexradio] DC/DC Converter (DC1) Replaced with Linear Supply

2006-09-22 Thread Stan
John, can you be a bit more specific as to what you did and what you used to
do this. My unit seems to have more than its share of these "carriers".
What about 10 meters? Any improvement there?

Many thanks

FWIW I have been using Linux since 1995-1996

I started with RedHat - then found Mandrake (now known as Mandriva)

I have tried many of the different linux distros but always come back to
Mandrake/Mandriva.

I have found issues with most of the other distros that have turned me away
from them.

If I had to chose one distro it would be Mandriva. Easy to install, fast &
very stable.

I did burn some live CD's recently so I could check out some of the others
including ubuntu, and they just are not as good in my opinion.

[Flexradio] New SDR help needed

2006-04-22 Thread Stan C.
Hi Gang.
Ok...just got the two new SDR's here. Have some questions. I am hoping i=
t is just a set up issue and something I am overlooking.
I am trying to use it on AM. I have played around with the bandwidth,ALC=
,Mic and power levels, etc. None of the above setting really seem to do anyt=
hing. I have tried a few different mic's..Yaesu MD-1, Astatic 1104C,tri=
ed some studio mic's with soem cheap preamps, and EQ's.
I seem to have some echo, and the unit does not seem to want to modulate =
to very high levels.
Now I have been a long time AMer with lots of vintage xmitters (Valiants=
,Ranger,32V2,Desk KW,etc.) behind me. And so farthe rig falls way below=
what I was hoping for as far as AM use is concerned. I believe I saw someo=
ne say they can get upwards of 150% pos. modulation with theirs. BoyI a=
m only seeing around 80-90%. If I try and push it it distorts and sounds li=
ke crap. Maybe the gent that wrote about that can let me know how to get th=
ere.
Anyways...any pointers would be great. If not I will be selling one of t=
he units (keeping the other for SSB MARS use) so if anyone is interested le=
t me know. I just received it today so it is basicly new. I got the FireBox=
 with it,etc.

Re: [Flexradio] [OT] dual-boot Windows XP machine

2006-04-16 Thread Stan
I dual boot XP and Mandriva Linux, I have been doing this for a long time now.
Since I have fewer security issues with Mandriva I use it 95 % of the time.

The only time I use XP is when I absolutely need to run a windows program like
Autodesk Civil 3D or ArcGIS.

Otherwise theres no reason to use XP.

I have another much better machine which is set up in similar fashion but the
ONLY windows program I use it for is SDR.

I block it from the internet as much as possible. this keeps the windows
partition clean from all the garbage on the net and in top shape for the SDR
radio.

Re: [Flexradio] Am I Missing Something? Or Is Everyone?

2006-04-16 Thread Stan
When I purchased my radio, Gerald told me on the phone
having an SDR radio is really neat cause every few weeks you get new software.
Its like Christmas, every few weeks there a new version of software to play
with, like getting a new radio.

So this is changing? Why?

I dont have the time to set up SVN, my life doesnt revolve around ham radio.
I am sure there are some of us who actually have real jobs (not retired).

If the tune from the original song is changing Gerald, can I send my radio and
all the other items I needed to purchase to make it work in for a full
refund?

I know next to nothing about the operations of the Flex Radio. But I hav=
e built some "extreme" high end PC's (water cooled CPU,overclocking, dual gr=
aphics cards, etc.) and would suggest you do some shake down on your home =
brew machine. =

You said when you turn off some of the programs that this helps. That ma=
kes me think RAM or CPU issues. Here are two freeware programs that will he=
lp you find any weakness in your hardware. The first is Prime95. If you hav=
e a dual core CPU or Hyperthreding CPU you need to set up TWO instances of =
the program and make sure your CPU is running it at 100%. You need to leave=
it running for 12+ hours and better if it goes 24+ hours.
   =

  http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm
   =

   The next is memtest86+ v.1.65. Again.letting it cook for 12+ hours i=
s best.
   =

  http://www.memtest.org/
   =

If you get ANY errors with either program then there is a weakness "some=
where" in the machine. =

   =

Fixes range from "loosing" the memory timing, adjusting the voltages on =
the RAM,CPU,etc. Replacing the RAM,etc.,etc. =

   =

Thats about all I can offer as I know nothing about software.

[Flexradio] SDR-1000 AM use

me of the reviews about the radio I see some are using it for AM use.
This really got my attention as my main interest when I was active was A=

ad a Desk KW for a bit. I would like to hear from users that are using the =
SDR-1000 on AM and know what "good AM" sounds like.BIG,heavy, loud, full,=

  What band width is optimal.

related to Ken's comment about the success of HFPack yahoo group:
Indeed,
they work well. However HFpack, and related groups, are more generic and

not tied to a particular hardware widget. The facilities provided by
HFpack are not provided by any other venue. In the Flex-radio SDR1000
case, that's not so clear: Flex has a web site, with forums, file areas,

etc. If interest in "SDR"s as a generic entity grows, I think it would
be
time to look to more generic sites. I also note that HFPack is
moderated,
which makes a big difference. If Flex stops being supportive, then I'd
also
see the need for an independent venue (much like the numerous forums for

car makes.. some useful, some less so)

Re Frank's comments about forking: Yes, forking is a time honored
tradition of Open Source, however, as Eric Raymond points out in
"Cathedral
and Bazaar": forking is strongly discouraged by societal forces within
the
F/OSS community. A manifestation of that societal force is the numerous

"no yahoo group" posts.

re various comments along the "let a thousand flowers bloom" lines: I am

all in favor of trying lots of new things. The fear (perhaps unfounded)
is
that Flex (the participation of who is essential) will find themselves
spread too thin, trying to keep up with them all, and wind up
overwhelmed.

re Stan's comment on license status: Now we are a real e-community!
we've
got ad hominem attacks and flame wars heating up. Let the entertainment

I know you have subscribed I was trying to make a point by bringing that up.

I seriously dont think any other group or website harms SDR or for that matter
Flex Radio. The more people who find out about SDR the better.

There are some people who think another place for info is going to
harm the effort.

Some have even resorted to gloom and doom to make their point.

Some have lowered themselves to personal attacks.

Thanks for making it more clear that the "other" group is a necessity.

If we go along with all the people who say no to a yahoo group, then we should
ask those who have an SDR related website to shut that down also.
Thats the kind of thinking we have going here.

Yes, its a software defined radio, but not everyone cares to code (not morse
code). Some of us would prefer to talk about the hardware, like maybe whats
in that little black box we paid $1400 for. Or maybe making the computer work
better with the (Egad) software.

Do you see there are many areas of interest here?

Some of us dont care to learn programming or dont have the time to get that
deep into it.

Different strokes for different strokes!

I suppose I could start a yahoo group for the following;

those who use an SDR radio with Vertical antennas

those who use an SDR radio with yagi antennas

those who use an SDR radio with mobile antennas

those who use an SDR radio with crystal microphones

those who use an SDR radio with slow computers

get the point?

would it really hurt anyone?

No one is saying this yahoo group is a solution to anything, its just another
place to get information.

who cares! if the owner of the yahoo group wants to try and runa group there
thats fine, if he fails thats fine, if he succeeds thats fine.

Its just another place to go for information on the SDR!

Re: [Flexradio] Announcing the new SDR1K Operating andUseDiscussionGroup on Yahoo

2006-03-13 Thread Stan
That's right, ANYONE can start an SDR group on yahoo!
If you want official information you have the "choice" to go to
the "Official" SDR website. OR you can go to yahoo and post a message and you
might get an answer.

Sure, you may want the info provided by the manufacturer, not too many are as
accessible as the Flex team.

But if some one wants a yahoo group why bother to stop them?
We should be encouraging these people to do these things.
this is how you get your ideas/products out to the mainstream by providing
more outlets for the users and those who are interested.

Not everyone goes to the manufacturers website for info.
You know what customer service is like at most places these days. Flex may be
an exception but how many people actually know this?
Then again from a yahoo group you might find more people being directed to the
Flex site than otherwise would happen.

You "amateur radio hobbyists" who said "NO" need to rethink what your
reasoning is for the negative response to a yahoo site.

With that archaic kind of thinking its a wonder we still have a hobby.
It is a hobby isnt it?

Why do you believe we need strength in numbers?

This way the SDR gets more out into the public. More people get to check it

Maybe you are afraid of the competition this group might provide to the

Personally 90% of the stuff posted here is of a software nature, many of us

So maybe you and the "elite" staff of programmers need a place to hang out

I had no idea we lived in a closed communist society where we have one group
(the elite) dictating to the others (the surfs) what someone can and cannot
do. I am sure the owner of the yahoo group paid for his radio just like
everyone else and I would think it entitles him to have some choices (if this

Why is there always a group that wants things their way? Someone else has an

For those of you who dont want a yahoo group, get out of the way and let the

[Flexradio] Preview 8 Report

2005-12-18 Thread Stan
I turned on both Direct X and Polyphase FFT - not sure what that is -
got errors-unhandled exception- but had the option to continue which I did.
CPU usage has been running about 7-10%. It had been running a few hours.

I just restarted the console and now its about 30% + or - 5 %

All drivers are up to date so I am not sure why it went up so high, but it is
running and looks very good.

I restarted the computer - which is dedicated to the SDR and now the cpu
usage is between 30 & 40 %

Unchecking Polyphase FFT makes no change in the cpu usage.
Someone tell me what this is please!

Changing to GDI+ reduces usage to 10-15%

Now I rechecked both GDI+ and Polyphase FFT and CPU usage is around 5-10%

Hmm, gotta wonder why this isnt consistent, but it is working.

I am running an Asus mobo P5GD1 with a Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 Ghz 512MB of Ram
with an NVIDIA Ge FRoece 6200 TurboCache 256 MB

Aloha Gerald,

The ones on 10 meters from 28.850 to 28.585 do not go away when the antenna is
unplugged. There are also numerous others on 10 meters which "dont go away"
when the antenna is unplugged.

Why is this problem so obvious on 10?

28.580-28.585 are really bad. I did a screen shot of it but file is over 6meg.
I would be happy to send it to you if there was some place to upload it to

Aloha Jeff,

Well, I suppose if a new DDS chip is the answer I dont have a problem if the
guys at Flex come up with one and I have to spend a few bucks to see the
improvement.

It is a great radio but I think this spur problem needs to be put at the top

Same with 28.711 - up and down from 28.727

[Flexradio] Spurs on 10 meters

2005-12-10 Thread Stan
While tuning around 10 meters today I came across the worst case
of spurs I have ever seen on any radio. From 28.580 to 28.585 is
nothing but spurs. Turning off the spur reduction makes it even worse.

This 5khz is not usable for me. Its totally destroyed by the spurs.

Anyone else seeing this or have I got a problem with this radio.

[Flexradio] Weird audio click

2005-12-10 Thread Stan
For some strange reason on 12 meters and 10 meters
when I tune around the band either with the wheel mouse or
the Shuttle Pro I get an audible click every time a digit in the readout
changes.

If I leave spur reduction on I get it every third digit change.
Example going grom 28.300 to 28.303

This shows up on the pan adapter screen also as the display jumps.

Anyone else seeing this?

I should also have mentioned this happends every 5 - 10 seconds.

[Flexradio] Audio click

2005-11-13 Thread Stan
Using preview 5, with the antenna disconnected, I hear an audible click
from the speakers. It also shows up on the panadapter screen as a jump in the
noise floor. Preview 4 doesnt do this.

Anyone else seeing this?

Re: [Flexradio] OT: My Vertical and the 80m Quest (help!)

2005-11-09 Thread Stan
I just purchased a Cushcraft MA8040V for my place.
My understanding is these antennas work well.
Got this one for $200 from AES.
Bandwidth on 80/75 is supposed to be 100Khz 2:1 SWR
and they recommend only 8-10 radials.
I will let you know how this all plays out if you are interested.

[Flexradio] Power SDR Console v1.4.5 Beta Preview 3

2005-11-02 Thread Stan
As others have stated the Monitor is on all the time.

Receiver calibration not working the way it should.

I used an Elecraft calibrator and -73 dbm (about 40 over S9 is what I got)
also gave me a real high floor.
So I finally got to S9 - at -123 dbm.
BUT the receiver sounded really nice. Quiet and seemed like I could hear all
the weak ones on 40 meters.

Eric, PLEASE leave boxes that need a check - unchecked when you send releases
out. Since we have to import or run thru the setup it would be best that we
the user get to do these things. I think doing this lessens the chance for
problems on startup.

I had all the buffers set to 256 and everything seems to be working.

It seems now the CPU usage is higher. During the contest it rarely got above
10 % Now it seems to stay between 10 to 15%. Any idea why the increased
usage?

QUESTION: My linear needs at least 100 watts to drive it to full power.
If these finals are good up to 200 watts can a design change be looked at to
increase the output to 100 watts? What would it take to do this?
