Honestly, I don't think Garrison is a spammer, he's posted on-topic

Look at it this way, it is extremely hard to support modern hardware in
a DOS style environment because DOS allowed application programs to use
hardware directly.  Jim Hall has said himself that he has limited
interest in the GUI end and most people think a Windows 3.11 Workgroups
compatible GUI is too much work.  DOS is fast, but Linux stripped down
properly is also fast.  DOS is great for playing old games, and there
are some popular applications for it.  Thing is, DOS doesn't make sense
at all in the multicore era as a primary operating system.  DOS was
needed when the personal computer wasn't powerful enough to support a
more sophisticated operating system.  I'd say that Freedos has it's
uses, but without active development on a variant that can take
advantage of multiple cores and modern hardware, there are probably a
dwindling number of uses for it.  Without hardware protection and memory
protection, Freedos is certainly fast but probably not acceptable to
everyone.

From Garry: Realizeing Dos is not acceptable to every one, that dose not
matter, for those that find Dos acceptable,..and to help continue active
developement,..I invite anyone to share on this site:

Re: [Freedos-user] Freedos and PC simulators

2011-08-02 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello all, A while back I asked if anyone new about putting Dos games online,
PC simulators, etc...
And I got several links, that were helpful,.. So far  the one I have been
useing is RETRO, by was written by Joris van
Rantwijkhttp://jorisvr.nl/retro/retroapplet.html as it was the simplest one, at
first I had some trouble getting my Floppy images for freedos, to work,..but
then I finally got some good ones.
Also a while back I noticed a phpBbs Forum, that was starting , I thought I
saw the link to it at the FreeDos site homepage, but when I tried it it still
was not running, Dose anyone know anything about that ? I like the idea of a
forum for free dos, better then the mailing list,..  I guess that is about it,
I have a question about editing the config.sys,..  MENU 3 - Load FreeDOS
without drivers, if I want freedos to just use this option, when it boots, no
menu, just automaticly loads with no drivers,..How should it be ?(config.sys)
sorry if this seems like a dumb,   question, but I don't know. I guess thats
about it,..if anyone is interested, they can see what I did, with RETRO and
FreeDos, at :http://creativeminds.webege.com/RETRO-04/retro-0.4/retroapplet.html
Also any suggestions, or comments, more info on this are
welcome,...http://creativeminds.webege.com/RETRO-04/retro-0.4

[Freedos-user] Dos Games, on a Web site ?

2011-07-07 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello everyone, It has been a long time since I have sent anything to these
news letters,... This is a little off subject, in relation to Free Dos, hope it
is ok,  Dose anyone know what is involved, and if it is possible to put a Dos
game on a web site, so it can be played online, ? I use Free Dos, but also
qbasic with Free Dos,...So if anyone has any info on this, perhaps it is better
to e-mail me, then to go into details in these news letters ? But I got
thinking since the users of free dos, have a wide range of experience, perhaps
there is some one that knows more on this, if this post is not acceptable , I
understand,thank you from Garry

Freedos-user Digest, Vol 415,

Did somebody suggest
http://sites.google.com/site/rugxulo/

already? It is from 1 year ago and available as 1-3 floppy
bootdisks of 1.44mb each. You can also download a combined
2.88mb boot image based on the first two floppies :-).
I took the liberty to make these images, hope it is ok,..
Of course :-)
they worked fine on my computer, and also when I downloaded them and useing
 POWERISO
ver.3.7 http://www.poweriso.com copied to a floppy , still boot fine.
I did not try burning these to  CD,...there are 2 disks, one has a
few utilitys, such as edit, keyb,..the other is just a boot disk,
thats all it dose is boot, one could build a batch file, etc,
with it...as it dose have the basic, command_com kernel and sys.
Sounds interesting.
I would be interested in know how they work on any other computers,
but also am not responsible for anything. So any way if anyone can
As long as you are interested in improving them :-p
use these, they are welcome to get them.
 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15387474/FreeDosBootWithutilities.daa
 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15387474/FreeDosBoot.daa
I assume DAA only works with Poweriso? How about 1:1 raw floppy
images or simple ISO files for the CD case?
I also have the same, in a .bif form, but did not post the link,
also drop box, as in this form they still have to be converted to a
image,..

From garry: Eric, thanks on this: http://sites.google.com/site/rugxulo/
I had never noticed it before, if anybody did suggest it, but thats a great
resource, I looked at the site, and it has alot to offer,..here are the other
images, I made I guess they are what you call raw images:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15387474/FreeDosBoot.bif
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15387474/FreeDosBootWithutilities.bif

I am interested in improveing them, if I can,...
Anyway, it looks like your site, or the one you've posted ,is much more
complete, I think I could learn more from there, aslo I am going to add a link
to it on mine, so I don't forget itif thats ok.

Hi all,

A user reported to me that for some HardDisks FreeDOS's FDISK is not
able to set the ACTIVE bit for the boot partition...

Has anyone encountered this problem? is there a fix?

I am using fdisk131.zip (fdisk.exe is 39153 bytes)

Thanks for any info,
Alain
-
When I first was installing FreeDos, and also setting up my partitions,
I never could get good results with fdisk, anything formatted with, or
partitios set up witf
fdisk, would not boot, but I never understood whay, I thought it was cause I
did not know much about what I was doing, but I had been folowing instructions
very careful, I finally ended up useing the SPFDISK, and Partition Magic, to do
what I wanted to do,..Although I never pinpointed the problem wiith fdisk, what
yu are saying makes me think, that may have been the problem. I would be
willing to run some tests, but unfortunately, since this computer is working
fine like I have it, and I don't have another that I could use,..I've got to
much work in this one, to risk experimenting anymore. However I am very
interested in hearing what more devlopes on this. If you want I can give more
detailed info, as to version,etc,..later...at the moment this is my lunch break
and I do not have the details at hand,...
I had liked what fdisk appeared to be able to do, it seemed simple enough to
use, etc.
But as I said since I never could get anything to boot after useng it I gave
up, it never occurred to me it may be a bug.
I will look for the next user lists letter or feel free to e-mail me, if there
is anything I can do to help.
Guess thats about it, from Garry

Anyone know why there's no simple bootable floppy image available in the

format and/or sys C:?

Felix,
It may be cause it is so easy to make a boot floppy,no one thought it is
necessary.
I booted with the CD, then useing the FreeDos in the CD,.C:\fdos\bin if I
remember correct,
useing FORMAT/S A: ,..this formats the floopy as system disk, it should be
bootable,
This also works if you have freedos, or any dos already on you HD,... then I
added  afew files,.. such as edit, I made my autoexec, and config sys, the way
I wanted, of course on a floppy there is not much room, for much more then to
make it bootable, however I am not useing OS2,  nor linux, so ...this worked
for me , useing windowsxp, and or also useing
FreeDos, after I had installed it and had the CD drive working...I have several
bootable floppys, but have never tried this, I guess I could make a image, and
put it on my dropbox,..
I may just do that this evening, I to never had given it a thought, as it is
easy to make the floppy, and also so few people use them.
 Any  way good luck,...from
Garry

[Freedos-user] No kernel sys (Fabrizio Gennari)

2010-12-14 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello fabrizo,
This  just came in today, in my e-mail, not sure why the delay, but
any way,
When I first installed free dos, mostly because I had no clue as to
what I was doing, I had a fair amount pf problems,...now it has been
so long ago, that I am not sure how much I remember, but am willing to
help if I can, Below is correct, to boot from a partition, it needs to
be set active, and it must be a primary partition, you can have
several primary partitions, includeing, a partition dedicated to
Windows,...it all is a little , complicated at first, but once you
get it worked , not really,... on my website, I explain some as to
what I did, also Eric Auer, was helpful, to me,you may have gotten
this worked out, since there was such a delay on my recieveing the
freedos-user,lists or letters, feel free to email, meor if you
want post the :
http://msbasicqbasicbeginners.lefora.com
This is my forum, allthough I say Qbasic, it also is intended for
freedos, and any Dos, users...not very active, but I get notified,
when there is a post, and also check daily,
A forum for learning Basic,Qbasic and more. In a nut shell, I am
willing to help anyway I can, I would need to know more details,
before I can really say, much,...but also, you need to have some sort
of bootmanager, installed,...because, if you disactivate you windows
partition, and activate your FreeDos partition, you can get into
trouble, when yu try to switch back and boot with windows, I use XOSL,
others use FDISK, some use GrubFordos,...there are some good detailed
documenst on this, but I can't remember at the moment the links,...

Hello.
I installed FreeDOS on a partition of my HD, but, when booting it, it
says Loading FreeDOS no KERNEL SYS.
When booting FreeDOS from CD, the partition is visible as C:. I even
typed again SYS C: from there.
Searching the Net, someone said the partition must be primary and have
the bootable flag set. Even in that case, it does not boot from CD.
http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/faq/cgi-bin/viewfaq.cgi?faq=General_Info
rmation/225
says obscurely a little tweaking (of the boot sector linear
partition
position / hidden sectors value) should make LBA booting on any drive
letter possible, but it does not specify what to tweak and how.

So I'm assuming it's a big FAT32 partition / drive then. IIRC, the
boot sector for FAT32 might be a little buggy. Make sure to try latest
kernel's SYS first. (sigh) So few volunteers, so I dunno if anyone is
available to help you (Bart??).   :-/

Like I mentioned, Eric Auer, knows a lot more on this then me, but if
he is not available, or to busy,...feel free to contact me, either as
I said by e-mail,my forum, or here,...a final comment, especially if
yu don't know what you are doing, don't be stupid like me, have
everything, you want to keep, or that is important, before, you start
fooling around with, setting up your partitions, installing a boot
manager, etc.the folks that know what they are doing, already know
this,I didn't pay attention, to the advice, and lost some work,
had to reinstall windows, This is not to say Free Dos , is
dangerous, or anything like that,..FreeDos is great, and a very
versatile Dos Os,...what is dangerous, is if you don't know what yur
doingGood luck,...guess that is about it,..if you have not yet got
this worked out, send me some details, as to exactly what you are
trying to do,the tweaks are hard to give details, as everyone has
different prefrences, etc
From Garry
P.S.in the long run I hope someone else, with more experience,
vololunteers,,...but I'll do what I can

Solved!

A previous attempt at installing FreeDOS in a logical partition was
still there. GRUB tried to boot that, in any case. I dont know why:
maybe a GRUB bug, maybe the primary partition was created by using
GParted's copy partition, meaning that the two partitions were
identical, even with the same UUID, maybe a combination of the two...
The logical partition has been removed and the GRUB config file has been
adapted, and now FreeDOS boots.

Thank you all for the help!

I'm running the LiveCD (fdbasews.iso).

Where on the c: drive is an autoexec.bat file that I can edit so as to
change the path when running from the LiveCD?

(In other words: where on the C: drive does the live CD look to see if
there's an autoexec.bat file that it needs to execute?)

That's because it's an immutable liveCD. It's not as simple as just

Web:  http://www.sff.net/people/N7DR
---

I was going to say , pretty much the same , it sounds like he is going to need
to
make another cd, with a autoexec.bat that is the path he wants.
This is because when the computer boots , it use the autoexec, on the CD, or
when
it boots from the HD, the autoexec on the HD, you would need to edit the CD,
but you can not edit CDs, like he said, so the only option, is change the path
manually, like you mentioned, or make a new CD, you could just make a simple
.bat file, the changes the path, even call it autoexec.bat, so if you have
booted with the CD, and it says you are
useing drive A:\ , then it has created a virtual drive, just change to C: ,
where you have
created the atutoexc.bat with the path ,etc you want,  type autoexec, hit
enter...you could
name the bat file more short, AE.bat,...so all you do is type AEhope I make
sense,..
I am not a big authority on this, but thats my idea
good luck from Garry

Apparently, in the Windows partition there is an emulator.

This direction does not get you anywhere, because the emulator's output is
simply the Windows driver for your sound card.from me: Yea thats basically
what I thought, or perhaps some one out there already has, and will share it
with me...

MPXPLAY is working great for music on FreeDOS, so the sound
 capabilities are there.

This is better. Now learn to program in C and Assembly language and write
a JLM Sound Blaster emulation driver based on MPXPLAY's drivers.

Regards,
ChristianThanks Christian,  However this may be
years, down the road, as I am a slow learner, but thanks any way..., Anyway,
also, in the other posts, about DosBox, well thats about all I use itfor, is
the one stupid game,...it may seem stupid to evryone else, but I like it,... I
agree Dos box, is real limited, and when I am useing Dos, I have booted,
with Dos,...On the learn to program C,...I may be able to learn enough, to do
this,.in time,...even if the game is stupid, old, etc...It would be a
interesting project, justto see if I can..., I could also re-write the entire
game, to run on more modern drivers, ---if I learn enoughwell any thanks
for the input..

--

You can't just read the emulator ... not because of the NTFS, but becausethis
emulator is part of NTVDM + NTOSKRNL + sound driver system and will
not run in DOS even if you copy all the files.

Do I need to get  a whole new SB,.. that is for Dos?

You could get an ISA SB sound card (if you have ISA slots) ...

MPXPLAY, is working great for music, on the FreeDos, ...
so the sound capabiltys are there

:-)

OK
 So,How can, or where can
I get sound blaster (or a emulator), for Dos

Please can someone tell me how I might go about building a freedos
executable to do some simple graphics.
I have already installed the watcom compiler and built a simple
executable.
What I need is information on what functions to call to change
screen mode and to alter elements of the screen.

I'm not sure that C is a good choice to start programming... A BASIC dialect
might be more adapted for an easy start. FreeBASIC is a very powerful compiler,
and keeps things simple.
Just as a quick example, a BASIC program displaying a yellow circle with a
green line on screen would be as simple as:
SCREEN 12
CIRCLE (320, 240), 120, 14
LINE (200, 120)-(440, 360), 2
SLEEP
END
Best regards,
Mateusz Viste

Thanks for the response Matuesz.
I have the watcom compiler already installed on my debian box. So I would
like to stay with C.
I am also very familiar with C and C++ plus numerous other languages.

If you already are very familiar with C C+  and numerous languages.then
it seems like would not need to askbut ok any way, I am not to familiar
with those, but I found the easiest way to start learning basics, is the
Qbasic and FreeBasic...on m y web site I have some samples of my first
programs, I have not yet gotten into the graphics much as it is more
complicated, but am studieing on it,I aminterested in checking out the
librarys that were shown it another response...for watcom, there are also
lots of librarys for FreeBasic, and Qbasic Well good luck, and sorry I
don't have a better answer, actually this is more ofjust a

[Freedos-user] Freedos-user Digest, Vol 376, Issue 1Saturday, July 17, Networking

2010-07-18 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Uli, Willi Wasser ,and anyone else...
Thank you, I downloade the NTOOL you mention, actually the whole
group,utiliys,etc,
WillI Wasser:which i called NTOOL. It can be
downloaded from here: http://www.bttr-software.de/products/jhoffmann/,
me:
as I am not home yet,I have not tried it.
I am useing the CRYNWR dirver that came in the freedos package, on the Big
computer, it appears to have loaded good. On the lap top it dose not load,
For The Laptop aspire series AOA150
Nicscan results: bus: 2 device: 0 Function: 0
PCI vendor: 10EC = Realtek Semiconductor Co.LTD
PCI device; RTL010E PCI Express Fast Eternet controller
is what the laptop says
and when FreeDos starts, it say failed,: to install Packet driver (CRYNWR)I
did note
on some of the previous links you showed, a list, showing what driver is
recommended,I dont remember if it include Realtek,I think it did
ULI,:I think years ago with DOS 5.1 you may have connected the two
computers with a parallel cable and used a software like laplink to
connect them. This is also possible with freedos and you don't need
any drivers for it.
Ok I still dont remember the software name, but yes it was the parallel
cable,or null modem?... anyway I got looking close at the laptop, the only
socket, that looks like it could be, is described in the manual, as only for a
screen(VGA)...and it dose work for that.
Could it work? as the big computer has 2 sockets, and more...I doubt the laptop
will
be able to connect that way, so the Cross Over, cable...is probably my only
option,..
ULI:Networking the two computers and transfer files over a crossover cable
is also possible, but it is a bit more work. The one thing you need to
find is a DOS driver for your network cards.
This might be either a packet driver (which is the easiest to use),
an ODI driver (file name ending *.com, you find it in a directory
called netware, nwclient, ODI or VLM on the cards drivers
disk) or a NDIS driver (file name ending *.DOS).
Which network cards exactly are you using?
On The big computer,I need to check and see what card it uses,I dont have it
handy,
as I am in a internet cafe right now
When you say Cross over, is that the one that uses RJ8,(i think), it is like
what I call phone jack, anyway it is what normally would go to a
modemsorry I am so ignorant
on terminolgy(names)... When I try what the cross over cable(phone jack)
type,...I suspect it cannot work as because probley the big computer dose not
have a eternet card,it is older, if connected to a modem, with the card
..probley it would work.

ULI Transferring files and directories can then be done with a lot of
tools. I think I would use a ftpserver and a ftp client. The method
over IPX, I wrote about two days ago, works, but it is not very
user-friendly, so I cannot really recommend it.
regards
Uli
PS: I really like your website.
Well thank you very much on that, I am almost kinda shy on that, as I
realize it is
not like most sites, and also it still is missing alot ..although I have a
windows html editor,
I don't use it much, A lot was written just useing the FreeDos editor,I should
add
I like ( above)  http://www.bttr-software.de/products/jhoffmann/,  (the site
design), also the free dos site is very nicely designed too,
Just one last comment,  I just recently started to uderstan a little in
writeing qbasic stuff,
I installed the qbasic program into my FreeDos partition, I haveing a lot of
fun with that,
as I never had written anytype of program, just some batch file
stuff...FreeDos,also has some, what appear to be neat editiors for program
writeing, but I dont know enough, yet
to be able to use them, but hopefully soon I will.
thanks every one for the help..

Hi,

Mike Brutman informed me that he has improved his free networking
software mTCP for DOS / FreeDOS. Applications now include a new telnet
client. (See his mail below).

Mike is willing to make the code open source, so this could be very
interesting for the FreeDOS community and other developers for DOS.

Downloads and information about mTCP can be found at his website
http://www.brutman.com/mTCP/mTCP.html

I already tested his ftp-software last year, which turned out to be
faster than anything else under DOS (see:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/freedos/index.php?title=Networking_FreeDOS_-_mTCP).

Have fun trying it out - and please send your feedback to Mike.
uli,
Ok well this software, requires modem, and eternet, I am thinking about, or
would like to just connect 2 computers, (laptop) and Table top(IBM), both
have fredos, and boot with freedos, I would like to connect the laptop to the
bigger computer,  but with just a  cross over cable,Can FreeDos suport this?
or what software do I need,Is there any?...just for Dos ,not for windows, well
if the software supported windows thats fine, but more important is Dos
and I am not exactly sure how to do this, any suggestions?..Just a simple
connection, as they are both mine, I dont need or want passwords, etc...
just simple file viewing, copy, edit, delete or moveing..ok amy way if it is
not that simple, as simple as I  can find...thanks

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDos-User,FreeDos.bootablebootstick,grub

2010-06-29 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello,anothers name?
Format your memory stick(bootstic) useing /S, and useing FreeDos, just that
simple,it should then be bootable, booting with freedos, but will have no real
OS, it will just be bootable, copy con, and type, the most basic comands
work,,when you have the bootstick
actually bootable, if you want you can add grub, or you can add most of the
freedos files, and programs, to have what you want, HirensBoot Cd, has a real
nice CD, that can be used to help, but it is not useing FreeDos, but you can
build a CD, includeing FreeDos,...
then copy it to the bootstick and it works well, but the bootstick must be
bootable, first,
Also HP format tool, is great to do the format, select the FreeDos system
files, on the
option, location of Dos Boot files. But I found the fastest easiest way is
simple Format/s
the memory stick (format /s D:(or whatever ur USB drive letter is), adding
Grub, and what ever later,  ok  well good luck.
I have some more complete instruct, that Hiren sent me, but they are at home,
at this moment I am in a internet cafe, and dont have them handy, but if you
want I can send them
later, but I think you can find the same on Hirens web site www.hirensbootcd.com

Re: [Freedos-user] installing Free Dos without boot loaders

2010-06-21 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello,
I use XOSL as my boot loader, and as Eric says each OS is in its own primary
partition, XOSL boots first, with a list of the various (3) partitions and OS,
(windows,FreeDos, MSdos),...partition magic, and also one called partitition
wizard, that I got off of Hirens
boot CD, works well to activate or disactivate partions.
How ever on my laptop, never could get XOSL to install correctly..so I also
use grubfor dos, as mentioned  and it works well,  when it boots I get the
choice to boot with windows
or boot with freedos... I dont believe you can have both OSs in one partition..
to be honest I have never tried it.
good luck from

Hi

FreeDOS does not need anything from the Win98 partition to boot. The
requisites are:
1) it must boot from a primary partition
2) the partition needs to be active.

Windows98 have the same requisites, that is the problem. But it can be
solved by Grub.. This is how I did it:

# This entry for FreeDOS on /dev/sda1
title        FreeDOS
root        (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader    +1

# This entry for Windows98 on /dev/sda2
title        Windows 95/98/Me
root        (hd0,1)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader    +1

Notice the makeactive command that changes the active partition
on-the-fly. But you will still need both to be primary partitions, only
a few programs can achieve this, sorry but I don't remember which,
probably PartedMagic http://partedmagic.com/ is ok. (it can move
partitions too)

Alain

Is it possible to install FreeDOS 1.0 on a Windows 95/98 machine without
it installing the boot loader into the Windows 98 partition?

I have an old laptop with Windows 98 and Linux.  I use Grub to
multiboot, so I don't need the FreeDOS boot loader, and don't want to
 interfere with the Win98 partition.

I realize (1) Win98 has its own DOS, I just want to play with FreeDOS,
and (2) I could just sys the FreeDOS partition, but I'd rather use the
 FreeDOS installer if possible.

 Thanks.

Hi Alain, Eric,

FreeDOS does not need anything from the Win98 partition to boot.
  The requisites are:

 1) it must boot from a primary partition
 2) the partition needs to be active.

Not really... Because you use GRUB, it is enough if you have
a valid boot sector in a FILE. Our SYS can make such files,
without actually SYSing your partition. So Windows stays as
it is, and you give the file to GRUB as the chainloader. You
just state the filename instead of the +1 to make the DOS
menu item, which for the rest is a copy of the Windows one.

Example GRUB menu.lst snippet - GRUB 2 might differ a bit:

# on /dev/sda1
title           FreeDOS
root            (hd0,0)
# savedefault
chainloader     /freedos.bot

# on /dev/sda1
title           Windows
root            (hd0,0)
# savedefault
chainloader     +1

To make this work, you generate a freedos.bot file in the
root directory of the C: drive of Windows, using our SYS:

sys c: c:\freedos.bot bootonly

The bootonly stops SYS from copying kernel.sys and
command.com of FreeDOS to C: - instead, you can copy
our kernel.sys to the root directory of C: manually.

Do NOT copy command.com to that place! You might mix
it with the Windows one otherwise. Instead, put it
in a separate directory, for example c:\freedos\ :-)

Note that SYS cannot (as far as I remember) make good

Anyone whom has successfuly installed FreeDos to a portable USB HD ?
NO. Why not the internal HD ???

..please give me any tips or instruction..

http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0503736/php/drdoswiki/index.php?n=Main.USB
Thank you for this link, it appears to be loaded with info,... Just to answer
the question,Why not just put freedos
on the HD?...(instead of a portable HD), I already have
free dos on my HD, I also wanted to,( and have done so,),put it on a portable
HD, because I often use other
computers, besides the the one at home, and none of them
have any Dos, much less FreeDos,they are all windows...
well,ok they do have the command prompt, that windows offers,...but that is not
much, try writeing a batch file with CHOICE, options in it useing the
command prompt, that you get with windowsXP.you will get
a invalid command...so with freedos on my portable HD,
I have FreeDos, I can boot with it if I want..and never
effect the HD on the computer,as I am useing my HD,and just the key board, and
screen of the borrowed computer,
..since most people use
just windows, and very few people use Dos,anymore...
I imagen, there may be a few others, that also would
like to be able to  do stuff with Dos,or freedos, and probely the computer
where they work dose not have FreeDos, and the BOSS might like it very much if
they
create a partition and install it...ok, well many people
have a laptop, and bring it to work,if one prefers Dos,
they can have it on theyre laptop, for me it is easier
to carry a small portable HD,in my pocket, then a laptop, but yea, I also have
FreeDos on my laptop,..part
of my reasons for wanting to put it on a portable HD,
was just to see if I could,,it also works real well
on just a Datastick,...but sometimes with some stuff it
says not enuff memory, (ram I guess)
Well some one asked why, and thats more or less why...
it is a long explanation,..but actually I left alot out..and then I was not
sure if the comment no,was to say one can not do it, or no, he dose not know
anyone whom has,...
I still would be interested in hearing from anyone
else, whom has done this, or is trying to,...
As I mentioned I never did succeed installing to the portable HD from the
install CD,...I made several partions,...and then the one I wanted to use for
FreeDos,(also was the firstpartion I loaded a OS too)..
I formated it with the FreeDos on the home PC,and used
a HD (actually just the partition) copying tool to copy,
the partition, off the big PC to the portable..
and it workedit booted when I used the boot from USB device, opt. in my
bios settingsbut later I kind of messed things up when I tried installing
other OS's to the portable HD,..and a boot manager(XOSL)...I ended up useing
grub for dos,...and have, MS dos7.1..also this
Hirens Bootcdbut those do not have not have anything
to do with freedos, except that I find they are compatible,.since maybe or
probley no one,or very few persons may have any interest in this...I dont want
to getlonger into boreing detailshowever, as I said I would like to here
from anyone that is interested
or has some experience with this,as there are still some
problems I have not solved,..feel free to e-mail me
I am working on a webb page, but it still is not really
set up to good...and that is also another subject...
But here is the address,e-mail: garryricket...@yahoo.com
http://GarrysPage.yolasite.com

P.S
What about HTML editors, for DOS ?...I have used the one
in ARACHNE...but wonder what else is available...
and then I wonder if anyone knows of a web host that is
real simple...not like Google,yahoo...ectone that
just offers the hosting...I dont really even care about
a domain name...I would like one that I can simpley write my HTML docs,(at
home), then upload the Docs,with
any files...and the page is like I designed it..not like
they design it...or changed it to, and edited to conform to
their templates..well that dose not have much to do with free dos either,
except that that is what I am looking for is a host, that is more suitable for
stuff written useing Dos  editors..and prgrams, ect.
hopefully someone understands what I mean
ok well thats all for now thanks in advanace

mouse.com off of  DOS7.1 and put it in the FreeDos,...and it works...it si
cause the mouse is USB...and apparently CTmouse looks for a com portWhen I
installed Free Dos, I never did actually get it to install from the CD,..so I
Copied the entire Partition, off of my big computor, where FreeDos runs
fine, onto a portable USB HD, the for the Porable HD onto the laptop.I would
be interested in more info on USB drivers, that work well with freeDos
I would like to see more stuff on FreeDos, that is why I subscribe to these

..I am disappointed, this stuff on the other subjects...none of wich seem

I've installed FreeDOS 1.0 on a IBM Thinkpad 600E laptop. Pretty powerful PC
for DOS :)
I was trying 'The Incredible Machine' game:
http://www.abandonia.com/games/25/download/TheIncredibleMachine.htm

But on my laptop a small top part of the screen is appeared in the bottom, take
a look here:
http://share.ovi.com/media/vitali.samurov.FreeDOS/vitali.samurov.10072

What could be a reason? Has anybody seen such a thing?

Best regards,
Vitali
(from Garry) Sorry I dont. have a clue, but ,I looked at the pitchure you
haveon my laptop the screen is very small, and some times I have problems
with stuff fitting, and so if at the bottom is a buttons like Submit, or
Cancel, or Save, ect..
I cannot click them, as I cannot see them, maybe hopefully some one knows
something about configureing the screen, correctly,

Hi,

I prepared a boot floppy and a CD-ROM [*] and tried to install
FreeDOS as a single operating system on a 80486 PC (IDE Drive,
one FAT partition). Booting from floppy works and the CD drive
is accepted as drive X:
The last messages from screen (German version):

CDROM mit ODIN gefunden
X:

I am wondering why the setup doesn't continue.
A manual start doesn't work either:

X: setup
X:

Nothing happens. I can move from A: (floppy) to C: (hard disk)
and to X: (CD-ROM).
What's going wrong here?
Can I start the installation manually?

Thanks in advance.

Stefan
(from Garry), Maybe try installing in English?...then if it works, you know it
is in the languageWhen I first installed FreeDos, to the big computer, it
had a damaged HD, and all kinds of stuuf happened, includeing lock ups..on the
new HD,
it installed smothly, but later, for my own fault, I crashed the computer, and
when I installed FreeDos again, I had to try a few times, sometimes I could
start setup manually, and sometimes nosorry I cant be much helpI am
struggleing to learn more and understand this stuff, but dont know very
much...just enjoy it cause it is ort of like a big ,nysterious puzzel, but
slowly the pieces come together and everything makes more sense

Re: [Freedos-user] USB support, USB portable HD?,music

2010-04-13 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello,
I was looking at the most recent new letters, and because I am wondering about
installing FreeDos, into a new portable HD, usb I just bought, it is a
sangsun,320GB
I also just wanted to comment, on the music, and long file names, I use
MPXPLAY, on the FreeDos, and yea, when I first put my favorite songs, to a
directory in Fdos, none of the names could be read,it was real confusing..so I
went back, to windows where I had the
original files, and renamed them to short names, that I could easily
remember...copied them back to the Directory in Fdos,..  Anyone whom has
successfuly installed FreeDos
to a portable USB HD ?..please give me any tips or instruction..I tried useing
the same technique I used to put it on USB bootstick 4gb(kingston)...but it did
not workThats all for now thanks

Hello,Kevin, and everyone,

to use,..I dont have the address handy, as I am at a iinter net cafe, but a
search on google or yahoo,HP FORMAT tool, will bring it up, also I have had
good success with formating the data stick, useing the format/s command in
freedos, also had success with one I formatted useing HP tool, and the boot
files on a Floppy formatted with windows, I then copied the dos files from the
freedos CD, to the data stick, and it booted, and ran freedos well, it is cause
back when I first started to try free dos, I had a damaged HD, and nothing
installed right, lots of problems..

I was wondering if I could get a raw drive/partition image to write a USB stick.

I tried the floppy image from another site just to see if it would work.  :)  I

due too a bad HD, with the new HD every thing installed fine, I set up 4
partitions, 1 for windows,1 for another Dos version I like(, 7.1), then the 1
for freedos, and a small on for a boot manager, I am useing XOSL, but others
are useing the xfdisk,...any way, just to say hi, and everything works fine for

[Freedos-user] Installed freedos,Secretary,Merry Christmas to all

2009-12-20 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello all, Alex...
I just wanted to answer about the secretaries computer, No, the secretary dose
not even know the first thing about about Dos, but I do not have internet
access at my home...I also mostly am useing Freedos, experimenting, but on my
computer at home,,she just let me use the machine in the office for a couple of
minuets, and I apologize ,because the key board was terrible, the space key did
not hardly work, I am use an internet cafe,at this time...and also have more
time, as I mentioned, finally( I had alot of trouble installing), Freedos
installed well, and seems to be running fine, in it;s own particion...and The
Cd rom works, also I have sound,
the MPXPLAY , works real well to play music from CDs...how ever ,...I enjoy a
Pac Man very much..it is a loder version...and it looks for sound blaster,to
have sound..with that game I dont have sound..and am still looking for a
solutionif anyone has suggestions on that, It seems there is some kind of
Sound Blaster emulater,or card, for windows..as when I
use Dos box, under windows..I do get sound with the game...
On the Installing,...all though previously I had made a primary particion, for
free dos, it still did not install well...and the only way I could run windows,
was by hideing the partician
later I formatted the hard drive..and only installed Freedos...and it installed
well...
And I did not use windows, I dont really like windows that much...but I do have
a couple of programs I like that depend on windowsSo I reinstalled windows,
and createda new particion, for freeDos...I had trouble useing Fdisk, but
useing Particion Magic, and also
the SPFDISK..included in the freedos package...
The other part of the problems ,I think...was also I had alot of viruses..and
Also running a disk checking program..was getting messages that the hard drive
is damaged, 3000 sectors.and only about 86 were repairable...at this time I
waiting for a new hard drive..to arrive...here there is no stores that carry
that kind of stuff,...but I have ordered one...
ok well I guess that is about it for nowI dont want to bore everyone with
areal long email
Merry Xmas and happy new year to all

Any idea which program gave the error95 message? I think it might be the
FORMAT or Fdisk program doing so, which means we'll need to figure out
how far your installation process got.
What you can do is manually run the FDISK program, create a primary
FAT16 (or FAT32) partition (instead of extended or logical partition),
set this created primary partition active, then reboot, then run FORMAT
C: and try the installation process again.
If that fails, also try running SYS C: right after the FORMAT step.
If fdisk/format/sys go right and the installation process afterwards
still goes wrong, please let us know. There's some tricky situations
sometimes.

Bernd

[Freedos-user] fdfullcd ISO, KINGSTON data traveler...sound drivers?

2009-11-22 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello Blair,
Recently I downloaded the fdfullCD, from the freedos webbsiteI had posted
some questions, to the mailling list, also Eric, but later I noted when the
disk boots, it says
if one has troubles, to e-mail you
I seem to be haveing alot of trouble installing it...it boots ok..and starts
the installation ok, how ever always at some point..it freezes, saying error
95... the one time I got almost everyithing installed...or appeared to be..the
dos editor would not work..on that I got error bad CRC, b1de97eb should be
ebf22a97 ok,...well to start how could I change the autoexec, and
config.sys...if the editor dosent work?...
The CD seems to be good, as if I run freedos (ODIN) from the cd everything
works well.or seems tooso the problem seems to be in how it is
installing...ok
I realize some of the trouble is I dont know much about this stuff...but I am
learning...
Since I do not have internet at home...I can not just conect..and ask a
question when ever I have a problem..I am useing a internet cafe at this
time...so any way. since the Cd seemed to work fine..from the CD..I got the
idea to
just copy all the directorys and files to a USB memorystick
(kingstondataTraveler 4gb)..
I used windows explorer to do thisok I need to back track a little...first
I formatted the memory stick...useing the formatt/s...from odin on the CD..then
tested the memory stick..
and it booted well... so I closed the particion where I putting the dos
(odin)..and switched back to the particiont where  I have windows..to run
windows (vista)xpand useing the explorer, opened the cd, copied each
directory and sub directory,Ect..in the same order
...to the kingstonWell to my surprise, it works good...every thing
works...when I boot with the kingston.all I had to do is adjust the
autoexec and configsys for me..
How ever copy the Kingston to the hard drive..did.. not work
well it dose sort of, but has to be done almost one file at a timeI lost my
patience on that...so I just copied  the packages/base to the hard drive...then
unzipped all the files..
..and ODIN is running ok the editor, also the CD drivers..and Himem...and I
dont get the bad CRC...stuff...However I am still wondering why the CD cannot
install like it should...the error 95...sorry this note has gotten kind of
longif you want, and respond...I will be happy to send a more detailed note
on the errors I got..,ect...I am also sending a CC of this to the mailing
list..I dont know if anyone will be interested or not. anyway if not the dont
have to read it.
The one thing I am lacking, is I dont have any sound yetI have a Game (Pac
Man) that
uses Sound blaster,...Useing the DosBox..in windows...the game runs well, and
has soundhow ever that is under windows..I have sound, and music,ext...
on the particion where I am putting Dos, I still am looking for a sound driver
that works under ODIN ..or Dos...Sound Blaster,or imitation...if anyone has any
suggestion or info
on thisok well that is all for now...hopefullt I hear from you or
somebody...if not, well thats ok..I wont keep bothering you all..as I am sure
you are busy and so am I ..
any way thank you much..for makeing the software, freedos ,ect available.and
dont get me wrong...it is great software...just depending on the person..for
example some one like me..it is kind a hard to figure out how to use it..(the
software)..ok well thats all for now..

2009-11-14 Thread Garrison Ricketson
Hello, Eric, and al readers,...
Just a few days ago, I posted in the new letter...but was really vague, and
alot has changed,
Since I have no access for internet, I am useing a internet cafe..and never
have much chance,
I down loaded and installed the fdfullcd.iso.., and as I mentioned allthough
it booted could not complete the install, as it always terminated with an ERROR
95
how ever, later I selected the minimal install, the basic files...they seemed
to install good, completed the installation, but the Edit, still dose not work..I
am getting error BAD CRC...b1de97eb should be ebf22a97
Note: since I already also had the FDbasedcd.ISO and had opened and copied it
..I put that back in as the edit works wellit is kinda hard to explain all
this
Any way, I have managed to get my autoexec, and config.sys straightened
out..too
where the cdrom dose work, I got 2 cd rom drives..it reads both well
and also the HIMEM.exe is workingI am still trying to get sound...I just
downloaded a sound driver, but i am not sure if its correct or will work
I have freedos, in its own particion completely separate from windows, when I
use windows, I have to disactivate and hide the freedos partition, and activate
the windows...
If I dont hide the Dos partition, windows is extremely slow, almost dose not
run..I mostly am just useing the dos partition..I really dont have much
interest in windows,anyway...
To avoid getting to long, here... what I need to no is what is CRC ?...and how
can I correct itI am getting alot of bad CRCs...with various number
codes..not only just with the edit

Here is some info on my computor: IBM

I dont know if it is 386, or 286..or what..that is why I selected just HIMEM
for the high memory device...any way Eric and all.. I really am impressed with
the work thathas gone into this freedos, and found when I studied the files,
in the disk...alot of helpful info..
also the HELP,htm works well, .I used your examples of the autoexec, and
configsys..
as templates, but took out alot of stuff as it appears to be for various
machines
I am not a compiler, nor proffessional...this is a hobbie for mehowever I
like to learn more on all of it...I  hope maybe with this info, you maybe can
give me a Idea of the best config for my computer..on the bad CRCs,, if I knew
what that ment..I might be able to correct it... bye for now..thanks

Hello again,
Last night I downloaded the Boot CD version fdodin...it booted well, but took a
few trys,
but the installation did not go too well, It never did complete the whole
installation
Each time I tried, it did get a little farther...and finally almost most
everything..when it abborts I always get the same message, ERROR 95..?...
the dos editor dose not work...I dont know if that is because it never
completed the installation..or what...ok well thats about it for now...

MONTHLY REMINDER FOR THE FREEDOS MAILING LIST

Hi! If you are a new reader of freedos-devel (or the other FreeDOS
lists) then, welcome! If you have already been a list member for some
time, then you can skip this as you probably are familiar with its
content anyway.

The FreeDOS Project aims to create a free implementation of
MS-DOS. DOS is a popular system, and there is plenty of hardware out
there that supports DOS. The official home of the FreeDOS Project is:

http://www.freedos.org/

We have only a few rules for posting to the FreeDOS mailing lists:

1. Please don't swear. We don't want this mailing list to become what
   USENET usually is.

2. Don't post off-topic. Remember, we set up this mailing list to
   discuss FreeDOS issues.

3. No flame wars. If you feel really strongly against what someone has
   said, send a private email.

It would also be nice to send only plain text email messages, rather
than messages formatted in html or MIME encapsulation. This makes it
easier for everyone to read your posts. Above all, html files are real
killers for those who read with speech.

Also provide a bit of context for your reply. Don't be afraid to cite
the text or conversation you are replying to. At the same time, you
should be careful not to cite the whole conversation - just the
relavent bits.

Thanks for taking an interest in FreeDOS!

Hi, FreeDOS noob here.  Grub boots FreeDOS, which puts me in my win98
partition.  FreeDOS is installed in a different partition, but when FreeDOS
is running I have no access to the partition from which FreeDOS booted.
Help?

FreeDOS was installed from fdbasecd.iso installer.

Grub was installed by debian installer and boots FreeDOS with:
  root (hd0,1)
  savedefault
  makeactive
  chainloader +1

On boot, FreeDOS says:
  C: HD1, Pri[1], CHS=0-1-1, start=0MB, size=2098

Partitions are:
1:  FAT32 (Win98)   ..   this is where FreeDOS puts my command
prompt
