 So far I have tried:

 -Different power points
-Ran the hardware test cd ... all tests passed.

I should have mentioned all that in my first post, sorry everyone.

It sounds like you may need to reset the power manager (PMU). See this
article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Thanks for the suggestion mark, although I have already tried this
with no luck.
This is a classic symptom of either a bad battery or a DC/DC converter
problem.

When your iBook is switched off, the battery is subjected to higher
charging currents (because the computer isn't siphoning off current for
its own activities). It sounds like the charge circuit is detecting an
overcurrent or overtemperature condition (maybe erroneously) and
stopping the charge process. When the book is switched on, this is
happening intermittently. When it's switched off and the charger goes
into fastest charge mode, it's happening 100% of the time.

If you can test with another battery, I'd do so.

How much play in a Pismo clutch?

2003-07-31 Thread Lewin Edwards
Hi all,

I just noticed that my Pismo has about 1/2 of play in the LCD hinge
(measured at the free edge of the display). Is this about normal? I
know there are horror stories about Wallstreet in particular. I opened
the top part of the case and checked the clutch components, they all
seem to be in order (no loose pieces or obviously broken components)
and the screws are tight. It seems like the clutch itself has this much
play.

pricey. FYI, I've got an Hitachi/IBM 40GB Travelstar with fluid bearing
(very quiet), 5400rpm (faster than 4200rpm drives) for $130 from
GoogleGear.com. So, $200 is quite expensive for a 40GB drives...

 -Laurent.

Hmm... I would like a quite drive! Am wondering if I can
order whatever drive I want and just have the guy
use mine. Do you think that is something I can
mention or is that not ethical. LOL

I seem to recall there may be another guy in my area
who does this. I should see if I can give him a call.
I want to get a good hard drive, not just one he
happens to have hanging around.
Thanks,
Lynn

2003-07-31 Thread Lewin Edwards
You're better off than I am. My Wallstreet 266 has almost 2 inches of
flap at the same measuring point.
A quick web search (before I posted my message) showed a LOT of
complaints from people with Wallstreets. That's why I suddenly got
worried that my Pismo was suffering from a similar problem. Seems like
mine is totally within normal behavior limits, though.

Fried Chicken, Roast Beef, Country Ham, mashed potatoes, green beans,
blackeyed peas, stewed tomatoes...and MORE!
AGHHH, I am starving now! For some reason, I've been craving fried
chicken for the past week. Must be at least a year since I had any.
I've never had blackeyed peas, but I'm sure I'd like them! And mashed
potatoes!!!

*drooling*

The problem, Lynn, I think is that no one is quite sure exactly what
noise you're describing. it could be a number of things:

1: A squealing HDD bearing. Bad, means incipient failure of the system.

2: The internal fan coming on. Could be bad, indicating the system is
overheating more, or it could be it's summer, and hotter, or you've
moved to an environment where the noise is more audible.

3: Normal HDD noise, but you've moved to an environment where it's more
audible (or something else in your environment has changed, a new,
quieter room fan or air conditioner, or a loud external drive is now
off, things like that)

4: Odd audio feedback or cross-signals from something, meaning the
noises are coming out of your speakers. Is your mike on?

5: You've accidentally (or vis corrupted preferences) turned the modem
sound on all the time.

When does the sound occur?

Does anything make it change?

What part of your powerbook is it coming from?

Here's the RIGHT way to do blackeyed peas:

The night before, boil a ham bone (preferably one that still has

Turn off the heat and let it cool enough that you can lift the pot
with your bare hands.
Put it in the fridge overnight.
The next day, skim all the fat (will be hardened) off the top. Pick
out the bones and give them to your dog.
Pour the rest through a strainer into a second container. Save this
liquid!
  Wash the pot.
Pick the meat from the strainer and cut it into small pieces, being
sure to cut the meat away from the fat, and put it into the pot.
Dump a one pound bag of dried blackeyed peas into the pot.
Add the liquid that was strained. Add enough water to cover the
peas plus 1-2 inches.
Bring this to a boil, stirring frequently, then turn the heat down.
Simmer the mixture, while watching it for 20 minutes, adding water as
needed as the pea soak it up.
Keep it simmering for at least 1.5 hours (the longer, the better),
stirring it every 15 minutes - or put it in a crock pot on the lowest
setting while you are at work.
Serve in a bowl on top of fresh-cooked rice with corn bread on the
side.
If you serve this without a tall glass of sweet iced tea, you risk
spending a eon in purgatory!

If you don't eat ham, then you can substitute using for smoked turkey

I have not moved or changed anything in the environment. It hasn't
done the whistling thing at all today. It has been doing it off and
on for a few weeks and is giving me some other trouble. I tried
to burn a cd the other night and it showed up on my screen as
three different cds. After that when I try to back up, it never
finishes the session.

I can't tell where it is coming from. SOunds like the back. It is worse
at night for some reason. I have an airconditioner running at all
times. Computer doesn't seem hotter or anything. If anything,
it may be cooler.

I, too, was wondering about speaker stuff. I do know I sometimes
hear crackling sounds from the computer like speaker static or
something.

I suppose i should do a reinstall of my system software and
also the cd burner software. Disk first aid comes out fine
and I believe at last check there was minimal fragmentation.

Thanks so much for any advice.

Battery problems

2003-07-31 Thread James Rohde
Well, my problem is slightly different from the post by Emma - my
PowerBook (Pismo/2000/FireWire) battery suddenly will not hold any
charge. It started when the power went off here few days ago during a
storm. Forgetful/foolish me, I kept going instead of immediately
unplugging the AC adapter/charger. Well, a little later I get the
shutting down message and it _immediately_ goes down (split second)! I
unplugged the adapter and the plug to the PB, and went to a local
bookstore for a bit, to await power coming back on.

After the power got back on and I had plugged things in and started the
system back up, there was no red in the battery indicator on the menu bar
(OS 9.2.2), none of the bars in the Battery Control Strip (for showing
the battery charge) were filled, but it did show the unit plugged in. Had
to use the Date/Time CP to call up Apple's clock server and reset the
time.

I'm still trying to piece together exactly what happened and why. Given
that the date went screwy after the power was shut off to the unit, I'd
say the PRAM battery has no charge (maybe even is toast). But I'm not
certain - was that why the exp. bay batter went down, or did the exp. bay
battery cause the PRAM battery to fail? I did the PMU reset (shut down,
press the reset button on the back, wait 5 seconds, start back up), but
no change. The rechargeable battery in left exp. bay is a BTI I got just
over a year ago (July 1, 2002), but pressing its button doesn't even give
me one lit LED on it. Right after the power went out, I tried and only
the first LED flashed, briefly.

So short of having another PRAM battery to swap in and check (meaning
I'll have to buy one for - it looks like - $50/60), should I expect that
I will have to shell out another $150 (give or take, depending on the
make) for another battery, possibly *plus* get another PRAM battery? I'm
going to send a copy of this to BTI and MacConnection (where I bought the
battery) and see what they suggest, too. I'd hoped for about two years
life out of the battery, since my original Apple battery lasted about
that long. But if I have to buy another battery *every* year, that's
gonna get really old...

Or are there other things I need to try first (I'm not counting the
apocryphal bang the battery on the side of the dumpster routine I
recall helped one person a while back on this list)?

Seeking Help,

Jim Rohde

I just noticed that my Pismo has about 1/2 of play in the LCD hinge (measured
at the free edge of the display). Is this about normal?

My Pismo came with 1/2 of LCD hinge free edge play, you're okay.

BTW: I'm told that Iraq Freedom journalists found the Pismo most faithful,

Re: Battery problems

2003-07-31 Thread Lewin Edwards
me one lit LED on it. Right after the power went out, I tried and only
the first LED flashed, briefly.
There is a battery reset utility for Pismo, I *believe* (I kind of got
lost in the circumlocutive system requirements on Apple's site but the
description did say G3 Series PowerBooks). I didn't bother
downloading it because the documentation was all about 9.x and I have
OSX-only on my system. There are two parts to it: an extension and a
utility.

Anyway, it sounds like the micro in the battery is confused. If the
utility can't be found, or doesn't work, and you have nothing else to
lose, you can try resetting the micro the hard way:

1. (This may not work, it's not documented by Apple TTBOMK but it is a
standard feature of most intelligent battery controllers) - With the
battery out of the computer, hold down the battery check button for at
least twenty seconds.

If no luck:

2. Try removing power from the microcontroller to reset it fully. The
problem here is that the micro is powered off the battery, and it takes
so little power that it could live for years if you just leave it to
run down :) The best way to do it is to open the battery pack and
disconnect the cells, short out the power input terminals on the
controller board to discharge any capacitors on the board, and
reconnect everything. An alternative way (which doesn't involve
breaking the ultrasonic welds) is to short out the battery terminals
for a couple of seconds, but this is not recommended - apart from
possibly damaging the cells, whatever you use to short it will get REAL
HOT.

The problem with all of these methods is that they only reboot the
microcontroller, they do NOT clear the contents of the EEPROM in the
battery. This is the non-volatile device that stores historical battery
information and - more importantly - factory-calibrated charging
constants. If you were really unlucky and got a power spike during an
EEPROM write, the stored charge parameters might be corrupted and the
computer may simply refuse to charge the battery. In this case, the
only way to fix it is to get a known-good one (maybe from someone
else's dead battery where the cells are bad but the EEPROM is good) and
either copy or transplant it.

It seems like the clutch itself has this much
play.
That seems about par for the course, among my 2 Pismos and 2 Lombards the
play varies between less than half an inch to nearly an inch. The
Pismo/Lombard clutch design is substantially the same as that of the
Wallstreet series, but with a bit sturdier construction and less
resistance to movement. As I've not heard of any instances of
Lombard/Pismo hinge clutches failing, I'd wager it's much less of a
problem and not something over which to worry. My experience is limited
though, so that's absolutely NOT gospel.

Reell Precision Manufacturing made all of Apple's hinges I've seen so far:
http://www.reell.com/

Here's their 7mm hinge, which (as near as I can tell) is the
closest-to-G3-PB-hinges standard product they offer. In the photo
illustrating this page the hinge pin is captured in the lefthand part and
the clutchpack is captured in the righthand part.
http://www.reell.com/7mm.htm

The Wallstreet is the earliest 'Book I've seen using this clutch design.
The 3400 and earlier use a helical spring wrapped around a steel rod,
moving the display opens the spring slightly allowing movement. That
spring also explains why when positioning an older 'Books display you
need to push the display slightly beyond where you wish it to end up,
when you release it, it springs back a little.

In contrast, Wallstreet/Lombard/Pismo clutches use a steel hinge pin
gripped by a stacked pack of a dozen or so steel clips which are captured
inside a diecast housing. That housing is what fails in Wallstreets, as
the rotating hinge pin tries to turn the captured clips. The force is
concentrated on the outer corners of the housing where the clips are
captured and eventually the housing splits open.

I'd bet the reasons why the bronze models are not affected in the same
way is: 1) (I think) the clip tension is lower on account of the lids
being lighter than the WS models, and 2) Lombard/Pismo have the hinge pin
in the lower part and the clutchpack housing in the upper part (in the
display housing.) That die-casting appears to be a sturdier design than
the similar function Wallstreet part.

Here's some photos culled from current eBay auctions. First a photo of
Wallstreet 12/13 hinges:
http://ebay2.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_1a31af9e1e4964bc96a25e08893b0388/

 and a shot of a 14 hinge:
http://ebay2.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_fa388701b68827d032c37572d4fb6ca3/
i-1.JPG
and a shot of Lombard hinges:
http://ebay2.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_73728cde46b5e69dad7b980f0ef6df81/
i-1.JPG
for more eBay hinge sales, try this search:
http://cq-search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResultquery=%28pwrbook%2Cp
owerbook%2C%22power+book%22%2Cpbook%29+hingefrom=R10ht=1tmp=2currdisp=2
itemtimedisp=0combine=yitf=0st=2SortProperty=MetaNewSort

The play reflects wear inside the diecast housing allowing the
clutch-pack to move slightly. Also, I've noticed play on some Wallstreet
hinges where the steel hinge pin is captured inside the part of the
bracket attaching to the display housing. It doesn't take much play at
the clutch-pack-housing and/or hinge to equal alot of play at the
display's free edge.

Lubing the hinges may reduce the chances of failure, as reducing the
resistance to movement should lessen the stress on the hinge housing. I
mention that only because examining a pair of still-unbroken WS 14
hinges I noticed one was substantially stiffer and 'grittier' feeling
than the other. A shot of some thick grease returned the gritty hinge to
smooth operation. Something like wheel bearing grease or CV joint grease
ought to do the trick (available at auto parts stores, for those who
don't know of what I write.)

I took a bunch of shots of Wallstreet/Lombard/Pismo hinges (WS both
broken and unbroken) with the idea of putting up an info page, I promise
to do that soon and will mention it here when I do.

Dan K

Emma's problem...

2003-07-31 Thread Lewin Edwards
Searching for other things on Apple's site, I found the below info.
According to this, the PowerBook needs a service call... I'd try a
different battery first, if possible.

Question 4 : My PowerBook G3 Series battery does not seem to charge
when the PowerBook is running. It will charge when the PowerBook in
sleep mode. What's wrong?

Answer : These things may prevent the battery from charging while the
PowerBook is in use: failure of the charging circuit, a bad battery, or
an issue with the AC adapter or wall socket.

To help narrow down the possible cause, follow these steps:
Shut down the PowerBook. Connect it to AC power overnight and see if
the battery is charged. If so, your PowerBook should be repaired. If it
does not charge, try the next step.
Make sure the AC outlet works by plugging another electrical device
into the AC outlet and turning on the device.
If the outlet is working, try another PowerBook AC adapter, if
available.
Download and install the PowerBook Battery Reset version 2.0 from Apple
Software Downloads.

Sorry. I searched on Apple for more details just now and found an
article that says The Battery Reset application is not needed, and
will not work on an iBook or PowerBook (FireWire) computer. So that
was a red herring.

What I was REALLY searching for is an excellent article written by a
Finnish? Norwegian? hardware-hacker who disassembled a bunch of
confused notebook batteries and used a homebrewed parallel-port I2C

vagaries of the gas gauge ICs in great detail. I just can't find the

G4 Ti 550 getting hot ???

2003-07-31 Thread Laurence TeknoLiber
Hi!

I have a G4 Titanium 550MHz with two 256MB DIMMs.

It gets very hot around the top right hand corner, so
much so that I have a small 12V fan blowing on it to
stop it from getting VERY hot as it has actually crashed
in the past (without the fan).
This is more of a problem with the power supply plugged
in (I believe) and this is mainly how I use it.
I have mentioned my RAM as I have heard that this
can have something to do with it... (?)
I have spoken to one other guy with a 550 and he said his
got very hot too, but another guy with a 1GHz who used
to have a 4 or 500MHz had never had a problem...
I used to use the Mac at work, got made redundant and
was offered to buy it (and bought it) for 6000SEK (600Euro),
but am unsure of whether to keep it or sell it...

I guess so... The LCD is about 10 high, so 0.5 arc is about three

scientific calculator handy).

Lubing the hinges may reduce the chances of failure, as reducing the
resistance to movement should lessen the stress on the hinge housing. I
You think I can get enough in at the end that's in the lower half to
make it worthwhile? I don't want to open the top part of the unit again
unless I really have to.

I took a bunch of shots of Wallstreet/Lombard/Pismo hinges (WS both

Please do! There are a couple of sites with photos, but one is all in
Japanese and both of them [that I found] don't clearly illustrate the
details of construction or the exact failure. Just looked like a
collection of small mechanical bits to me; I couldn't positively
determine what had broken off where.

If you do that, the pea soak up the flavor of the water. If you

Need recommendation for WS repair.

2003-07-31 Thread macnifico
Hi!

My PowerBook Wallstreet has this classic problem. I need to prop up the
a/c plug so it exerts pressure, otherwise the battery won't charge, and
even if the Control Strip shows that the PB is taking its power from the
wall, the battery is the one that it really working, discharging normally.
Now I have to prop the charger plug at a very steep angle, before it
needed just a bit of pressure to show the lighting bolt, now it needs
a lot and to be just so.
I need some recommendation: Some shop that can fix this at a reasonable
cost. I don't want to pay $85 an hour, for a two hour job, at least,
plus the cost of the needed pieces of hardware. In other words, more
than $200 US dlls. It is NOT economically sound.
I figure than even with shipping charges, I can have a more cheap,
well-done job.
So, anyone cares to recommend some Mac Guru somewhere?
And if this is off-topic, then e-mail me off list.
TIA and best regards.

Well, I don't think it is too far off topic. I suppose the cheapest way
to do the repair is to do it yourself. Not being one easily intimidated
by taking things apart, I swapped most of the parts in and out of a
Wallstreet in order to get it going. After all that, I finally found that
it was the processor card. Now I have a bunch of extra parts!

From you description of the problem, I would guess that the soldered
connection between the power socket and the Sound Card has come loose. If
you aren't up to doing a bit of soldering, I have and extra Sound Card.
If you want to do a swap out (one of the easier parts to get at in the
Wallstreet), let me know.

Hi, Ken!

I'm very BAD at soldering. I tried it a few years ago, and I was BAD.
Now, with failing eyesight and trembling hands, I do not dare to even
look at a soldering iron.
I can exchange pieces of hardware (HDs, memory, CPUs upgrades, etc.) but
no soldering, please.
If it is just an exchange of parts, I'll do it.
Best regards.

My tiBook 550 gets warm where the power connector enters, but not hot.

Does the internal fan run?

Mine does during the summer when I do a lot of CPU intensive stuff, but it never
overheats.

It's possible your memory uses more power than normal, try running with only 1 DIMM. I
suspect that the first DIMM would be an Apple DIMM. Keep in mind that with less
memory, the disk will be busier as the virtual memory system thrashes around, so your
power may in fact go up with less memory.

I used to use the Mac at work, got made redundant and
was offered to buy it (and bought it) for 6000SEK (600Euro),
but am unsure of whether to keep it or sell it...

in good shape, it's worth a lot more than 600 dollars.

Re: DVD Copy

2003-07-31 Thread Lewin Edwards

Here is the process that I go through to copy a DVD.
I'm not interested in copying DVDs, but I *am* interested in putting
them on my home server so I can watch them over Wi-Fi on my PowerBook
without having to go to the DVD shelf (and also save the lifespan of my
DVD-ROM drive.. plus I can copy them to my hard drive for viewing at
work without carting DVDs around). I currently use my PC to compress my
DVDs to ~650Mb DivX files. Is there an application that will allow me
to do that in OS X? I've got as far as ripping and de-CSSing the files
using DVDBackup (you have to do the audio and video streams separately,
right?) but I can't find anything that will import the VOBs and
compress them to 3ivx/DivX/other MPEG-4 format. Any ideas?

Also:

Play DVD for a few seconds to unlock.
Is this necessary?
