IBook M6497 HD compatible with Wallstreet's?

2003-09-22 Thread John W. Travis, MD (Jack)
A friend will sell me his IBook M6497 which he dropped (and after 2 days the
HD failed) cheaply.

Will the HD from a Wallstreet fit in it (what does Ultra mean in front):

10GB Ultra ATA Hard Disk drive.

Thanks

Jack

Re: Pismo USB printer problem

Have you checked to see whether there are Mac drivers available
from HP? HP's site, the last time I checked--which has been several
years--is a nightmare.
I downloaded the latest version (4.5) of the driver which when first
installed worked once, but then nothing. What worries me is that the
installer is Classic only... :-O

Cookie problem through switch

2003-09-22 Thread Tekno Liber
I have just had a D-Link switch installed in my room (to service the
HP LJ2500L I spoke about, yes still a problem).
When I run my Pismo through the switch, cookies are not enabled
hence very few web sites work. When I bypass the switch everything
works fine.
I know it's not the Pismo/System software as I had the same problem
with a TiBook when I visited (or at least I presume it was as the
symptoms were the same even though didn't see a switch there).
Basically, is there a known issue with a switch and cookie problems
on Macs ?
D-Link says that they have no incompatibility issues with the switch
and Macs...
I'm still running Classic.

Laurence

I am stunned by the amount of problems I am having with my new
job, all because I want to remain using a Mac...

Wallstreet power problems

2003-09-22 Thread rgi
Hi,

I've built a Wallstreet PB from parts (eBay). It's a 233 w/512k, 6Gb Hd
and 13.3, CD and good battery.
I was told that the MB was defective, but I put the pieces all together
and the system started up.
But minutes later, it stopped working. Only the fan and the green led
remained on. Restoring PMU alternates the system between completely
stopped or fan + led.
Only from time to time (normally after several hours of inactivity) the
fan + led status changes automatically to completely stopped and I'm
able to boot the machine normally.
Once booted everything works for a period of time (sometimes during all
night) until suddenly it changes again to fan + led mode.
PRAM seems to be Ok, cause the system keeps date and time.

Can I consider that the MB is defective?
Sould I replace the PMU, the power card or the sound card?

Thanks in advance.

Ramon

It should work, but it depends on the height of the hard disk in
millimeters. I'm pretty sure that the iBook will not accept all hard disks
that can fit in a Wallstreet. For example, hard disks that are 17mm thick
won't probably fit in a iBook. So, that's what you have to find out. How
thick is your 10 GB hard drive and depending on your model of iBook, what
height it can accept.

Did the keyboard come with the MB? Try disconnecting the KB and running

Cookie problem through switch ?

2003-09-22 Thread Tekno Liber
Scenario:

Connecting my Pismo to the Internet (via DHCP) using a D-Link Switch
here at work causes Internet explorer to appear to deny cookies even
though I have the setting to never ask.
Removing the switch and connecting the PB directly to the RJ45 socket
and everything works as it should.
I'm using Mac OS 9.2 and Internet Explorer 5.1.7

I actually experienced this prior to actually working here when I visited
with my then PowerBook G4 (though a different socket which probably
had a switch there somewhere).
Any ideas ?

There aren't many sites that don't use cookies so Internet becomes
pretty useless...

Removing the switch and connecting the PB directly to the RJ45 socket

That's a rather weird occurrence. Switches don't do anything to packets
other than send them to the correct port on the switch based on the
destination MAC address in the packet. They perform no routing, they do
not look at the data load of the packet or anything like that. Cookies
are pretty high up in the OSI model (application layer I think). and so
the switch should not be affecting them at all.

What model dlink switch is this? If anything, I'd suspect that the
switch is bad and corrupting packets possibly. When you hook the Pismo
to the RJ 45 jack instead of the switch, are you using the exact same
port that the switch is connected to when you do this, or another empty
port in the wall jack?

I will be bringing a few shorter Ethernet cables to work tomorrow

are there somewhere on this planet people who found a solution for that

Re: Cookie problem through switch ?

It really sounds like the switch itself is bad. Have you tried plugging
an Intel based PC in to see if it has the same issues? One other thing
to try would be to force the ethernet port on your Mac to 100/full and
see if that fixes the issue. I have noted that some switches have
issues with auto-negotiation and certain vendors' network cards.

Re: Pismo... Powerbook or Powerbook G3 Series

2003-09-22 Thread Eric Morrison
David:

Actually, you were not wrong. Rather, what Eugene has uncovered is a
discrepancy in how Apple refers to the Pismo and, I believe, a mistake
on that particular tech note in naming the computer as the Powerbook
G3 Series (Firewire).

I did a little research on this because, quite frankly, I'm sick of
being confused about what's what and I have long heard and considered
the Pismo NOT to be a member (offically) of the Powerbook G3 Series
of computers despite the fact that it, obviously, is a G3 Powerbook.
However, the following line is cut and pasted directly from the Pismo
Service Manual (and it should be noted here that the title of the
manual is Powerbook (Firewire).

PowerBook (FireWire) is the latest addition to the PowerBook G3 Series
of computers.
The conclusion I draw (this is clearly my OPINION) from this is that
while the official Apple name for this computer is Powerbook
(Firewire), it is still considered to be a member of the Powerbook G3
Series of computers. However, as I had pointed out in a previous email,
the label on the Pismo clearly says only Powerbook as compared with
the Lombard which is specifically labeled as Powerbook G3 Series and
the previous G3 Powerbooks are labeled as Macintosh Powerbook G3
Series (I don't have a Kanga so I'm not sure how that machine was
labeled).

What this all adds up to, again in my opinion, is... hello Apple, could
you make it any more confusing? All this just to figure out what
computer you are dealing with and what technical information relates to
that computer? Maybe a better system in the Apple Tech Notes would be
to require that they always designate what models they are referring to
by number rather than by name as long as the names seem to be somewhat
arbitrary (and thus confusing) in their use.

By the way, I submitted a bug report regarding this tech note to Apple
to see what their response is regarding this (specifically, pointing
out that the Powerbook G3 Series (Firewire) was never a model of
computer made by Apple). I'll let you all know (I know you are all
anxiously waiting with baited breath to hear) what I find out if Apple
responds.

Re: Making the switch to OS X (yeah, I know...)

2003-09-22 Thread Clyde Kahrl
I'm not much of a help here with regard to OSX software,
(Photoshop Elements 1.0 is not carbonized) but, don't be afraid to
run stuff in classic. I find classic works great. The only time I
boot in 9 is to print in photoshop 7--because it won't boot in
classic, and as you all know, if you try to print 50-100 copies of
something in Word or Photoshop the OSX print driver will print each
item as a separate document, rastering each independently, thereby
causing each copy to take 3-4 minutes or more likely, causing the
program to crash. (Also Word X requires every document to be brand
new or it wont print it).
I keep copies of Word 98-2000 so I can print in classic.

IE Stuff

2003-09-22 Thread tivo
I've been getting about a dozen pieces of mail (virus) garbage each day,
purported from Microsoft, but news reports tell me that this is a slick
virus for PCs.

I just delete them, and I understand that this current virus and others
don't usually affect Macs.

But I also keep IE 5.2.2 in the Dock and use it now and then for particular
sites that require it (business info).

Is there a patch that I must add to the above version (I've never done
so), and if so, where would I go to download it? I searched around and just
don't get anywhere.

Thanks, Tivo

Re: IE Stuff

2003-09-22 Thread Krevnik
There isn't any patch beyond that for OS X if I recall correctly. The
e-mail viruses require VBScript (Visual Basic Script) support to run...
and Microsoft didn't consider the Mac a viable platform for VBScript.
So, because they felt we were not worth dumping an extra scripting
language on, we avoid the e-mail virii.

finally switched to Jag, but having a problem with a Word attachment

2003-09-22 Thread David Stephenson
I've finally switched to Jag (can't believe it took me so long, but I'd
somehow built it up in my mind as much more of a transition than it
really was), and am having one problem. I just sent my first email to a

I saved it as a Word document, included the .doc suffix, but the
recipient said it came across as gibberish (it was a resume, and, come
to think about it, maybe that was a comment on my background, not on the
formatting...). Any ideas?

--W. David Stephenson

It's probably both on the recipient's end, and a Word problem...

Word encodes Mac document files with a resource fork, even though
nothing is in there and Word will open the file just happy without the
resource fork being present.

If you sent it with Mail.app, the message went out as three attachments,
one the text of the message, another the encoded resource fork for the
Word file, the last the attached file itself. Some mail clients (notably
Eudora spit!) will screw this up, and only see the resource fork
attachment and try to call it the file itself.

(And no it isn't really the fault of Mail.app, it's that Mail.app
actually *properly* encodes mime attachemnts as apparently very few
other mail applications do, and they screw up. I've seen it happen here.
I can read and open an attachemnt just fine with Mozilla or Mail.app but
Eudora or WebMail screws it up. Other web-based email clients like
Neomail or Horde see it properly.)

The solution is to stuff the MS files before sending them.

(many people swear by Eudora, but I find myself mostly swearing *at* it...)

Lombard Battery Memory

2003-09-22 Thread Ely Zimmerman
Hello all,

This is my first query to this group, though I've been on the powercomputing
list for a while. Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer.

Just got a G3 Lombard via ebay (no manual), plugged it in to check it out
and discovered that the battery indicator next to the clock has an red X
through it and on the control panel strip, when I click on the battery icon,
the options are grayed out.

I unplugged it to see if the battery indicator would appear and the unit
turned off and reset to 1904

Q 1. Does this mean no battery or dead battery?

Q2. How much memory do you suggest and and where to get it?

The Lombard currently has 64 K ram running on OS 8.6.

I expect to move to Jaguar and I run Word, Excel, Filemaker, Palm, Outlook
Express and Explorer simultaneously.

Eventually I guess I'll need to max out the RAM (512?) but for now I would
prefer to try to get by with one 256 chip due to cost.

Do I understand correctly that for 512 I'll need both a low and high profile
chip if I add both? As the high profile is less expensive is there any
reason I should not get that now and the low profile later? I could stretch
and get both now if there was a good reason to but would prefer not to have
to.

Any advice on the battery icon, where to get memory and how much I'll need?

Thanks,

Ely

Re: Pismo... Powerbook or Powerbook G3 Series

2003-09-22 Thread Clark Martin
At 10:56 AM -0400 9/22/03, Eric Morrison wrote:
David:

Actually, you were not wrong. Rather, what Eugene has uncovered is a
discrepancy in how Apple refers to the Pismo and, I believe, a
mistake on that particular tech note in naming the computer as the
Powerbook G3 Series (Firewire).

I did a little research on this because, quite frankly, I'm sick of
being confused about what's what and I have long heard and
considered the Pismo NOT to be a member (offically) of the
Powerbook G3 Series of computers despite the fact that it,
obviously, is a G3 Powerbook. However, the following line is cut and
pasted directly from the Pismo Service Manual (and it should be
noted here that the title of the manual is Powerbook (Firewire).

PowerBook (FireWire) is the latest addition to the PowerBook G3 Series
of computers.
The conclusion I draw (this is clearly my OPINION) from this is that
while the official Apple name for this computer is Powerbook
(Firewire), it is still considered to be a member of the Powerbook
G3 Series of computers. However, as I had pointed out in a previous
email, the label on the Pismo clearly says only Powerbook as
compared with the Lombard which is specifically labeled as
Powerbook G3 Series and the previous G3 Powerbooks are labeled as
Macintosh Powerbook G3 Series (I don't have a Kanga so I'm not
sure how that machine was labeled).

What this all adds up to, again in my opinion, is... hello Apple,
could you make it any more confusing? All this just to figure out
what computer you are dealing with and what technical information
relates to that computer? Maybe a better system in the Apple Tech
Notes would be to require that they always designate what models
they are referring to by number rather than by name as long as the
names seem to be somewhat arbitrary (and thus confusing) in their
use.

Unfortunately the model numbers are frequently only the Family
Number which is the same for many models. I think all the Duos are
the same Family Number.

By the way, I submitted a bug report regarding this tech note to
Apple to see what their response is regarding this (specifically,
pointing out that the Powerbook G3 Series (Firewire) was never a
model of computer made by Apple). I'll let you all know (I know you
are all anxiously waiting with baited breath to hear) what I find
out if Apple responds.
The (Firewire) part is Apple dealing with the same problem as we
do, they just do it differently, not using the code names but using
features to differentiate the various PowerBook G3

My WallStreet (II) shows under the LCD as Macintosh Powerbook G3
and on the bottom side of the case as Macintosh Powerbook G3 Series
which is then followed by the configuration (CPU speed, RAM, HD size,
etc).

The G3 Kanga shows under the LCD as Macintosh Powerbook G3 and on
the bottom side of the case as Macintosh Powerbook G3.

You run into the same problem with all the G3 and later machines.
This is all thanks to Stevie. I can understand the idea of a common
name but they really should have had some distinct, easily identified
designation (such as model number).

If you really want some fun, try identifying the versions of iMac.

The lower slot requires the low profile memory, the upper can take
either. I went with the low profile and put it into the bottom slot.
This will make adding another 256Mb easier.

Re: Lombard Battery Memory

2003-09-22 Thread Jacob Saariaho
I'm in a similar situation myself, with a Lombard I got as a
hand-me-down. I just purchased both the high profile and low profile
256 chips from Otherworld Computing. With 128 MB my Lombard runs Jaguar
surprisingly well, but it is slow. I'm also replacing the hard drive
with a larger and faster one, apparently Jaguar uses virtual memory
automatically so a small slow drive bogs it down considerably. I'm
interested to hear what others have to say about your battery issues.
My battery is most definitely dead, but I'm also replacing my PRAM
battery because my computer doesn't like to keep the date if it's
unplugged for too long. Unfortunately, nobody seems to offer a new PRAM
battery, so I'm forced to get one on eBay.

Re: Pismo... Powerbook or Powerbook G3 Series

2003-09-22 Thread David M. Ensteness
You run into the same problem with all the G3 and later machines. This
is all thanks to Stevie. I can understand the idea of a common name
but they really should have had some distinct, easily identified
designation (such as model number).

If you really want some fun, try identifying the versions of iMac.
--
Clark Martin

While I see your point, I would rather try to do that [as you can
differentiate model by year - PowerBook 2000, iMac summer 2000, or
dominant added feature - such as Digital Audio G4s, Gigabit Ethernet
G4s, DVI PowerBook G4 Titaniums, slot loading iMac G3s, CDRW iMac G3s,
FireWire G3 PowerBooks].

Now while this may seem odd, we do the same with cars, I have a 3.1
1990 Olds blah blah blah. Try explaining the difference between the
different Performa 61xx models or try to get someone to believe that
the 7500 actually came before the 7200 or 7300. One could say that
telling the difference between the Performa 61xx's was easy, cause they
were all the same model but bundled with different software or RAM
amounts, but there in lies the difference.

I'm not sure but I kinda remember reading at some point that if your main

Most likely. Check the LED display on the battery (there is a

I'm using a WallStreet with 320Mb RAM, the original 64 plus an added

 another 256Mb soon.

The lower slot requires the low profile memory, the upper can take
either. I went with the low profile and put it into the bottom slot.
This will make adding another 256Mb easier.

Reseated the RAM
I've priced out Logic Boards for about $300...is this correct pricing?

I bought and then re-sold a 500mhz on eBay for about $200 in trying to
fix mine. Turned out it was the PMU cable, a much cheaper fix. $14.95

Don't know what caused the first error. That happened to me on my Pismo
yesterday. This usually means a serious error in the kernel. Your only
option at this time is to restart. It is displayed in several languages
because the computer is inoperative at that point.

As for your other errors, I don't know. Did you check your disk with Disk
Utility?

brute force adj.: Describes a primitive programming style, one in which the
programmer relies on the computer's processing power instead of using his or
her own intelligence to simplify the problem, often ignoring problems of
scale and applying naive methods suited to small problems directly to large
ones. The term can also be used in reference to programming style:
brute-force programs are written in a heavyhanded, tedious way, full of
repetition and devoid of any elegance or useful abstraction (see also brute
force and ignorance).

Since OS X automatically assigns more to a program as it needs it you
don't run out of memory or such but it does impact speed. But since
I have no grounds for comparison I can't say if 512K total (that is
the max) will make a noticeable difference. I have felt that with
many programs launched it does seem slower but it's highly subjective.

Re: Pismo... Powerbook or Powerbook G3 Series

This is all thanks to Stevie. I can understand the idea of a
common name but they really should have had some distinct, easily
identified designation (such as model number).

If you really want some fun, try identifying the versions of iMac.
--

While I see your point, I would rather try to do that [as you can
differentiate model by year - PowerBook 2000, iMac summer 2000, or
dominant added feature - such as Digital Audio G4s, Gigabit Ethernet
G4s, DVI PowerBook G4 Titaniums, slot loading iMac G3s, CDRW iMac
G3s, FireWire G3 PowerBooks].

With the PowerBooks at least you can tell one model from another
based on ports. A lot of the iMac distinctions are based on internal
differences (drive type, CPU speed).

Now while this may seem odd, we do the same with cars, I have a 3.1
1990 Olds blah blah blah. Try explaining the difference between the
different Performa 61xx models or try to get someone to believe that
the 7500 actually came before the 7200 or 7300. One could say that
telling the difference between the Performa 61xx's was easy, cause
they were all the same model but bundled with different software or
RAM amounts, but there in lies the difference.
The 7200, 7500 and 8500 all came out at the same time AFAIK. The
7300 was later.

I know what you mean about cars. I had a 1969 Toyota and you
sometimes had to differentiate the model based on serial number due
to a design change in mid production year.

I use a Belkin USB Bluetooth adapter with my iBook 500 in x.2.6 without any

Maybe try the Irda thing again, it would save lugging 2 different adapters

IRdA isn't supported on the WallStreet under OS X. Odd since it is
supported in, I think, the TiBook.

I did try it with my Visor but found out later that it isn't
supported. Ah, it was problematic at best under OS 9.

Re: Lombard Battery Memory

2003-09-22 Thread Krevnik
1) Sounds like a dead battery all right... but before throwing it out,
try Apple's Battery Reset utility. It might not be completely dead, but
only partially dead and revivable. BTI sells decent replacement
batteries, but like all laptop LiIon batteries, they are expensive.

2) I suggest 320MB as a minimum. 64MB barely held what I needed to do,
even under OS 9. I personally will be moving up to 512MB, but that can
wait.

I am actually in the process of making my stock 333Mhz Lombard into a
tweaked-out monster (I finished tweaking my 8600, so on to the
Lombard)... so if you want advice or tips on any Lombard upgrades, I
can probably answer, as I am looking at all my options and am about
half-way done with the upgrades.

Hello all,

This is my first query to this group, though I've been on the
powercomputing
list for a while. Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer.

Just got a G3 Lombard via ebay (no manual), plugged it in to check
it out
and discovered that the battery indicator next to the clock has an
red X
through it and on the control panel strip, when I click on the battery
icon,
the options are grayed out.

I unplugged it to see if the battery indicator would appear and the
unit
turned off and reset to 1904

Q 1. Does this mean no battery or dead battery?

Q2. How much memory do you suggest and and where to get it?

The Lombard currently has 64 K ram running on OS 8.6.

I expect to move to Jaguar and I run Word, Excel, Filemaker, Palm,
Outlook
Express and Explorer simultaneously.

Eventually I guess I'll need to max out the RAM (512?) but for now I
would
prefer to try to get by with one 256 chip due to cost.

Do I understand correctly that for 512 I'll need both a low and high
profile
chip if I add both? As the high profile is less expensive is there any
reason I should not get that now and the low profile later? I could
stretch
and get both now if there was a good reason to but would prefer not to
have
to.

Any advice on the battery icon, where to get memory and how much I'll
need?

Thanks,

Ely

Kind of off-topic though...

Thanks, Krevnik.

1. Is the reset utility the button on the battery itself? If not, where do I

decent emulator board for the Lombard or what is your opinion of Virtual PC

Try looking at www.macupdate.com and searching for 'Battery Reset'.

2. What/where is BTI?
BTI is a manufacturer... you can purchase their products from places
like OWC (Online), Fry's (US/Canada) etc.

No hardware board has been made for anything other than pre-OS X PCI
Macs... (Orange Micro... Apple made boards for the NuBus PowerMacs, but
neither is a laptop). Virtual PC is your best bet at running Windows
software without getting AMD/Intel hardware.
