newertech firewire 2 go cardbus driver OSX?

2004-01-08 Thread john hudak
howdy folks!

does a driver exist for this cardbus card (for my g3 wallstreet)?
i've done a lot of googling around, but haven't found anything. it
doesn't seem to work with the apple firewire drivers by themselves.
thanks!

best future,
john

I used this card on a G3 Powerbook in OS9 without drivers - OK. I
also used it successfully in a Titanium PB 800 under OSX without
drivers - you will probably need to restart to get the card to
function however.

90 minute CD-R

2004-01-08 Thread Melanie Stroud
I have an iBook and need to burn some info onto a 90 minute cd (there's
too much for the 80 minute). My computer doesn't recognize the cd as the
790MB that it is. Is there some setting I need to change or will my
computer just not work with the larger sized cd?

Thanks for any help you can give,

hmm. i tried restarting/shutting down and restarting/unplugging the
firewire cable/powering down and powering up the maxtor 5000dv (the
firewire drive i'm trying to mount) to no avail.

in os 9 there is a firewire 2 go enabler that helps it work. is
there a mounting utility? can i do it through the terminal app? are
there firewire extensions that i might need to manually
install/re-install?

i am using OS 10.2.6, if that has any bearing on this.

thanks!

Static discharge and the PowerBook

2004-01-08 Thread Mark Kippert
For whatever reason, I seem to generate more static electricity than I would
consider normal. During the winter I spray my area with an anti-static
solution but the occasional zap still gets through. Heck, some days I wonder
if my demise will be the result of Spontaneous human Combustion!

Anyhow, I'm planning to replace my iBook with a new 15 PowerBook. However I
was wondering about problems related to static electricity and the aluminum
body. Anybody know of, or experience issues, related to this?

TIA
-Mark

Well, despite my habit of touching an anti-static mat before touching
my new 15 PowerBook, my arm sometimes grazes the edge of the PB before
I reach the mat. I feel a very slight tingle, but haven't noticed
anything that I can trace back to that.

Best to avoid any static discharge, though, since it can be quite
intense.

Re: How do I get my USB printer to print?

using the CD-ROM that came with the printer, but I'm unable to get
the printer to print anything except its demo page. At startup, and
when I invoke the print commandi, i.e., try to print something in
SimpleText, I get this message:

The software needed to use the USB device, Samsung ML-1710 Series

the necessary software. If you do not install the software, you may
want to remove the device to prevent this dialog from reappearing.

I'm hoping there is a simple solution, but meanwhile I wonder if
somehow I got the wrong CD-ROM package. The new item now in my
extensions folder is a chooser extension SAMSUNG SPLII, 1.64.

TIA for any help. USB is still unfailiar territory to me.

If it is a Chooser extension, I am guessing that you are using OS9 or
previous.

Does the printer show up in the Chooser?

Do you have it selected?

Do you have the Apple USB support files loaded?

I have an Epson 777 USB printer and it is seen on my network as a shared
printer as long as the 777 drivers are present on each machine that I
wish to print from, even those that have no USB capability.

I do know that USB 2 is not supported by an OS prior to 10.?.?.(Jaguar?).
If the printer is USB specific, you may be in for a challenge.

I used to use humidifiers, and found (even with the best technology at
the time) that the combination of needing to clean them frequently and
thoroughly, and the fine white powder that wound up on lots of things,
that this cure was worse than the disease. And, the old-style
humidifiers could easily breed mold spores and spread them throughout
the office or house.

The technology may have advanced since then, but I haven't looked

Re: Static discharge and the PowerBook

2004-01-08 Thread Tom Roth
Use the simple, cheap steam type humidifiers. They don't make the white dust and
require only occasional cleaning and even that's pretty quick and easy. They also can
put out a lot of moisture in a short time which is what you need to avoid the static
charge.

2004-01-08 Thread Hugo Trottier
You simply need to up date your Samsung Driver.
Go to samsung web site under support you will be presented with a vast
array of drivers
Choose the one for your unit and your OS. Install, restart and voila!

Hope that helps

Last iBook and PowerBooks to boot OS9?

2004-01-08 Thread Sam
Are the most recent Apple laptops to still boot OS 9: any iBook G3 and any
non-FW800 Powerbook 15?

Apple's list, for reference:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86209

Figured I'd check with the list since people sometimes discover otherwise on
things like this.

Thanks-

If you are feeling a continuous tingle the problem is leakage current
in the power supply. Because of capacitance that exists between the
otherwise isolated AC to DC line power supply, a small amount of the
AC line voltage leaks into the DC output. In a desktop computer this
current is conducted to ground by the ground wire on the AC cord, but
on a laptop there is no ground wire.

When I go running and come home and use my powerbook at the kitchen
table with my feet in sweaty socks on a ceramic tile floor, my body
provides the path for this leakage current to get to ground. The left
edge of my tiBook frame has lost its paint because of abrasion from my
watch band. When skin brushes up against bare metal, a slight tingle
can be felt.

Anodization is non-conductive, so an AlBook without scratches should
not tingle your skin if your body is grounded.

Paul

Best to avoid any static discharge, though, since it can be quite
intense.

Re: Does D-Link Router support Appletalk?

2004-01-08 Thread Clyde Kahrl
Kris asked:
I am curious about something though, you said you turned off DHCP to work
with your existing network. Are you using it as a bridge?
A: I just turned off DHCP so I could test the non-wireless part of
the router--from port to port and not going through the WAN port.
It used the DHCP of my Asante router. Although I could see the
internet, it didn't seem to make any difference with regard to the
network--I still couldn't see anything on the net including OS9,
slowtalk, and Jaguar machines. I am vaguely aware that some routers
do not support some protocols (like say appletalk), but D-Link says
it works with Macs so I guess I have to look further.

As for a bridge, I guess you are asking if I was able to use the
router to access another router. I am going to try--but I haven't
yet. (since it was being sold for $46 with 2*$20 rebates, it was
cheaper than a bridge). I don't know what you mean about static IP,
you can turn DHCP on or off for either the WAN or the LAN ports
independently. (the wireless being part of the LAN).

Anyway, to make sure Xmas went OK I bought an Asante 1004AL wireless
11(b) router. Well, it works great, like everything else I've ever
got from Asante. I have some wire in my old plaster walls, so I put
it up high on the wall, in the center of the old house, and I was
still able to get a good signal 300 feet from the house. (so
everyone in the neighborhood or driving by can share).

Re: Hard Drive Upgrade Problem

2004-01-08 Thread João Loureiro
Hello,

I have a similiar situation in a Lombard.
Bought a 30GB Hitachi drive to replace the 6GB original IBM.
When I start from 10.2 CD, I run Disk Utility to initialize the drive,
but the program doesn't see the drive.
No sight of it.

If I put the old one back, the machine boots normally and the drive is
recognizable.

Any ideias?

- João

I bought a 30 gig Hitachi/IBM 2.5 mm HD to replace my loud, IBM 10 gig

The 10 gig came out fairly easily ... the 30 gig went in fairly
easily but when I put everything back together and go to install
Panther on it, it doesn't show up in the Destination volume pane.
It's as quiet as a cloud. It's as like it's not even in the Pismo.

Panicking, I put the 10 gig back in and smile when it boots normally.

I've tried this several times now, trying to match the 30 gig
installation precisely with the successful 10 gig but so far, no
satisfaction.
Glenn,

It seems that the 30 gig drive needs to be initialized. Boot from
your Panther install CD and run Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Initialize the drive. If you want to make this drive readable from OS
9 make sure to install the OS 9 drivers.

Indeed. And the hardwired ethernet section probably does pass
EtherTalk packets (AppleTalk over Ethernet) since these packets are
just normal ethernet packets containing AppleTalk data moving through
a hub. However, it probably doesn't route AppleTalk packets between
the wired and wireless networks, nor between wireless clients.

Linksys does something similar. Their hubs and routers work with
Macs, but they don't support AppleTalk. They'll pass AppleTalk
packets over the ethernet hub side of their hardware, but their
wireless clients (or upstream clients, AFAIK) won't ever see those
packets.

As an aside, does OS X do AppleTalk over Ethernet (EtherTalk - much
like AppleTalk over serial cables is LocalTalk, infrared is IRTalk,
etc)? I was under the impression that standard AppleTalk packets had
been evolved out of the OS in favor of only doing AppleTalk
encapsulated in TCP/IP packets (and using new tech like zeroconf)...
In that case, all the clients would need to be on the same subnet if
the router isn't being used.

Peace,
Drew

You are correct. The only Powerbook G4s that will boot OS 9 are the
Titanium ones, and the only iBooks are the G3 ones.

Re: OS 10.2 Jaguar modem problem reported

2004-01-08 Thread gf sciacca
I'm not sure this is entirely related, but I have also reported a couple
of weeks ago an internal modem problem on a Lombard under OS 10.2.8, but got no
replies. I have not tried a dial-up connection as I'm on DSL since
installing OS X, running fine and afraid to disrupt the harmony, but
when attemptimg to use FAXstf it fails, as the modem can't be found. It
doesn't show up in the print or modem center or in the system profiler.
Everything (dial-up fax) runs fine instead under OS 9.

There's must be something silly I'm missing there, but I can't just figure
out what and where. Help!

cheers, gianfranco

The server connects whne I press connect. All settings are correct,
including an alternative dial up connection. I am using the internal modem.

However when I try to check mail, or to connect my browser, it cannot
connect , and a modem error is reported. The email client even tries to
dial up when already connected. I have switched off automatic connection on
 remote access.

Even Apple's email client does this; my chess internet programme, auction
bidder, all the same: 'modem connection problem reported', 'check modem
connections' and no successful action from these applications. The settings
are correct however. And I may even be connected, manually. I restarted in
OS 9 with same settings and applications, no problem.

Booting from Firewire

2004-01-08 Thread Dr. John Pullyblank
Gary,

Thanks for your help. It turns out that I was too eager to push
buttons. For general information, the sequence is as follows:

1. Attach the firewire drive
2. Reboot holding down the option key
3. Wait while the drive options are found and displayed and (for me)
there is about a 30 second period of the watch icon.
4. When you get a pointer, click on the drive desired
5. Then click on the right arrow to boot the selected drive

Clicking on the circle arrow rescans for drives.

With the enhanced security of Panther, particularly FileVault and now
with a working bootable copy of my drive, I can go out in the world with
my laptop more comfortably.

John

Personal LaserWriter LS on WallStreet

2004-01-08 Thread Robin Ashe
I'm having troubles getting my Apple Personal LaserWriter LS to work with my
Wallstreet.

I have the 300/LS extension active, the power cord is plugged in, I can turn
it on and get a green light. The toner cartridge is in and I've got paper in
the tray. The printer cable is securely plugged into both the port on the
printer and the WS. I have it active in the chooser and it's set to the
printer port because the modem port is used by AppleTalk.

The error message I'm getting is:
There is a problem with the printer, check to see that the printer is
connected and that the printer is turned on.

I checked all of that, what am I missing?

Thanks
