That's not that easy of a comparison to make, given that there were no
800 or 900 MHz G4 powerbooks released, but we can compare a few of the
last powerbook models (all numbers from http://macspeedzone.com):

Basic CineBench Single CPU test
PowerBook G4/1GHz 12 inch (Sept 2003): 91
PowerBook G4/1.25 GHz 15 inch (Sept 2003): 113
PowerBook G4/1.33 GHz 17 inch (Sept 2003): 121
It's not that simple, however. I left out the iBook bench numbers
since there's a dramatic difference between the architecture of the
iBook and a Powerbook, L2 cache being the primary difference. The new
1.5 GHz PowerBook and the previous top-of-the-line 1.33 GHz PowerBook
are virtually identical: 167 MHz bus, 1 MB L3 cache. I don't expect a
dramatic difference in speed, just an incremental improvement -
probably around 135 to 136 on the CineBench scale.

Does that help?

WallStreet fan on when asleep in OSX

2004-04-20 Thread Dr. K. Gensberg
Hi folks,
sorry to ask something that has undoubtedly been covered already, but
here goes..

I have a WallStreet 266 which used to run all the time on OS 9.2, but
I have increasingly been using OS 10.1.4. When I put it to sleep
while in OSX, I hear a cooling fan (I think) start to run when the
computer is disconected from the mains supply. This stops once it's
reconnected, even though the computer is still asleep. I reckon that
the unnecessary fan activity increases battery drain while asleep
(plus, it annoys me).

Any solutions?

Thanks

HD speed and access improve speed (RAID, SCSI, SATA RAID)
Amount of RAM (more you have the more the OS can use as cache instead

CPU Speed
system Bus Speed
Amount of cache memory on CPU (for intensive tasks, cache stores
commands)

This goes for PC's and Macs. What am I forgetting?

Actually what you said is exactly the reason. In FL, extended
warranties are treated as if they are insurance. The state requires
insurance issuers to be licensed, etc. So no extended warranties in
FL. Other states don't consider them insurance and so everybody and
his brother sells them.

I'm not so sure what FL is doing is so bad, in general these things
are a scam although AppleCare is a good deal compared to the cost of
a repair and the actual chance of something going wrong compared to
most of these warranties.

Up until a few weeks ago I was the manager of an Apple Service provider in
the Tampa area. What you are saying is true. You can not (as an
individual) buy Applecare in the state of Florida. If you have a business
license with a separate tax ID # then you can.

What it comes down to is that the gullible (or senile) elderly population in
Florida have been marketed to death with offers from insurance companies
(many of them scams) and they lobbied to have these types of insurances
boycotted. Some companies have found legal loopholes in the system, like
CompUSA for example, and they offer their extended warranties, but Apple is
not willing to jump through millions of hoops to comply with the pathetic
laws of a small and insignificant state like Florida (Quoted from an APP
Service Manager in Austin Texas).

I find it ridiculous that even if you go looking for Applecare and beg them
for it they will not sell it to you if you are not a business in Florida.

Go figure.

Auto adapter for 3400 on a Pismo??

2004-04-20 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
I have a new-to-me Pismo 400 mhz that is replacing a PB 3400. The
added battery life is nice on the Pismo but there are still times an
auto adapter on a long car trip would be better.

I have a Lind Auto Adapter that works fine on my 3400. The part that
plugs into the PowerBook seems to fit the Pismo, although not nearly
as snugly as the yo-yo adapter plug.

I guess the main issue is the output of the Auto Adpater to the PB.
It is listed as out put of 24V and 2A (it is hard to read clearly
but the yo-yo adapter looks like it is an output of 24V and 1.875A.
So I guess it is an issue of the extra 0.125A).

the model is APA-24-SP.

I don't want to fry my Pismo either short term or long term, so any
help on this would be appreciated.

I'm not sure it is the FAN. I have same problem. I think it is Hard Drive cycling

About a year ago I came across a patch to solve the problem:

2004-04-20 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi Jack,
Have you tried version tracker? What is the key
word(s) for this SW you mention? Is it maybe a Classic
app?

OS X can do funny things (this morning my 9500 booted
into Darwin; I know text mode, but this isn't it).

I would try my PDQ with OS X; my research so far shows
mixed results. Why only 10.1.5? Jaguar is a more
mature OS X.; 10.2.8 is a better choice for
unsupported Macs than 10.3 AFAIK.

: G4 to G4 Megahertz comparison (was Re: New Powerbooks announced / I bought my first Mac today)

2004-04-20 Thread Clyde Kahrl
Doubling a processor speed usually does not result in doubling the
computer speed because the rest of the computer does not keep up
proportionately. With a powerbook, it helps to have a faster drive
because of the slowness of the laptop drives in general.

From what I have read, the G4s are still going strong, and they
should ramp up over 2Gs later on. Motorola announced some
super-low-power versions of the G4 a couple of months ago. I was
wondering what was the power consumption of these new laptops--or if
we must wait longer for the new chips.

Occasionally I install wireless networks for various people (side

interfaces. The first one was on a Windows ME machine, and I blamed it
on ME. The second one happened two weeks ago on a brand new Dell with
WinXP - it was a pain to install and it would lock the machine after
being on for less than five minutes (on that machine I replaced it with
a PCI version and it's been perfect ever since). Now I know this might
not have anything to do with them working on apple OS's but as for me,
whether in apple, windows, linux or whatever I'm staying away from
those cards. I'll vouch for their other stuff though (i'm on network
with their 54g access point going through their cable router w/4 port
switch then through their cable modem - not to mention the cute little
5 port switch that the access point plugs into - on my airport extreme

Hi Laurent, I have a Linksys (wired) and when I tried to install it
I did have some problems, I called Linksys and they assisted me all
the way through the process of installation, the guy stayed on the
phone and guided me step by step.
So it may be a case of how the worker operates or it could be that
I'm a lucky guy.
Linksys doesn't write drivers for Mac OS. If the USB dongle requires
drivers (it must, I don't believe there are drivers for these things
built into the Mac OS), it won't work with your Mac.

IIRC, MacWireless has a USB adapter for wireless...

Toast 5 Burn Speed

It seems like a problem with Toast, though, as Dragon Burn X (demo) lets me
burn at 16x in 10.3.3. I also get a 24x burn option in iTunes in both 9 and
 X.

 Any ideas?

Let's you burn... But have you successfully burned at those speeds? I
believe the Pismo architecture will cause buffer underrun at greater than
8X. Hoping I am wrong...;)

Re: G4 to G4 Megahertz comparison

The overall speed of a system is dependent on many different

[just to confuse or clarify things a bit. :)]

Each subsystem has limitations, which become bottlenecks during one
type of load or another. So it pays to target your upgrades at the
subsystem most critical to your specific task load.

On the top of the heap is the CPU. Gotta keep that processor fed
with data. Without data, the processor gets bored and racks up idle
time.

Next is the L1, L2, and L3 memory caches. They're very fast
(expensive!) blocks of memory that hold copies of the most recently
accessed main memory, in the hopes of being able to ultra-quickly
refeed it to the processor when/if it's called for again. Their
speed is so critical that L1 has been moved onto the processor chip
itself. In some cases, L2 also!

Next is the main memory bus, the memory controller, and the DIMMs.
The closer the bus' speed is to the processor's speed, the more
efficient. Gotta feed the caches as fast as possible!

Many magnitudes slower are the peripheral buses (PCI, PCI-X, AGP) and
the i/o controllers that plug into them, eg: IDE, SATA, SCSI, FC,
Ether, etc.

And magnitues slower still are the peripherals themselves - hard
drives, monitors, etc.

In the Pentium world, a 750mhz is not 50% faster than a 500mhz. Is that
true for G4 as well?
If you're comparing identical family processors, with just
speedbumps, then you can do the raw math, but that's rare. Engineers
don't just do speed bumps. They often other changes are made within
the processor - increased L1 cache, smaller gate fabrication
technologies (smaller = faster), etc, to make the chip more
efficient. And of course, the computer manufacturer also tweaks
the bus speeds and cache sizes... It all adds up...
