When I tried this on my Wallstreet, which is showing exactly the same

reset-nvram do and why should it not be a recognised command? Will it

Not a problem. I'm have 4 Macs and 4 peecees connected to a cable modem

each other, but I just don't need that capability right now.
I have an RCA cable modem (comcast) plugged into a Linksys, 1-port

seem a better choice, but with my cabling options, the 1-port was best.
The machines on the network are:
a 6400/200 (8.6), an iMac (9.1), a Wallstreet (9.2.2), a BW (10.3.4),
a w2k server, a w2k workstation, a winme notebook and a win98 desktop.
Setup is pretty easy... using DHCP is the easiest, tho' I prefer to use
static IP addresses.

If you need more information, feel free to email me or just post to the

come over and set it all up for ya! ;-

iMac Ram in a Pismo?

2004-06-05 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
I have a 512K RAM module in an iMac 500 mhz DV I am getting ready to
sell. I need to upgrade my Pismo from its current 192 to at least
640. Can I pull the 512 from the iMac (I think it was actually PC133
RAM - which was irrelevant to the iMac) and put it in my Pismo? What
research I have done on the web is giving me mixed signals so I turn
to this list.

Will RAM from that iMac (same RAM as used in the Cube among other
Macs) always work in my Pismo? Never work with my Pismo? Work under
certain conditions (e.g. a certain slot)?

Inquiring minds want to know!

WallStreet 300 pcmcia troubles

2004-06-05 Thread Peter Chastain
I have a Wallstreet 300 w/ 320 MB, original(?) 8GB HDD, and 10.3.4 via
XPostFacto and 9.2.2 each on their own partition. Regardless of which
OS I boot into, the 'book won't recognize anything in the lower pcmcia
slot except for the Apple DVD-Video card. I've tried USB, FireWire and
a mini HDD; none are recognized in the lower, although the USB and FW
work fine when inserted into the upper (the mini HDD is type III, so
fits only into the lower).

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Waterlogged wallstreet

2004-06-05 Thread Edward Jackson
Recently my Wallstreet was attacked by a glass of water. I took it apart and there
didn't seem to be any water inside the machinebut of course, now she's dead (and
I'm so depressed). If I plug it in it tries to start up, whiring while the green
power light goes on...but I don't think the hard drive even starts spinning and then
it shuts back down. In this process the screen doesn't light up and I have to wait a
couple of hours for this to happen again (it won't start with the startup button). So
the process (just to repeat) goes like this.

1. Empty battery bays. Insert power cord.
2. Startup light comes on, quick whirring sound for 2-3 second.
3. Sound stops, light goes off, and the machine is dead.
4. Repeat in an hour with same results.

It doesn't seem to me like the entire machine is shot and with the wide array of parts
on ebay I'm hoping someone could give me an idea on what this might beany ideas
from the Wallstreet family?

There are 10 different kinds of people: those who understand binary and those who
don't.

My only guess would be that some pins are damaged in the lower cage which

you have to completely disassemble the Wallstreet to do so. I know because I

Setting aside the type of recording device, I'm trying to understand these
interfaces - iMic and Hi-Fi Link. Apparently they allow you to translate
from analogue to digital; upload from a recording device to a Mac through a
USB plug without drivers. In addition, they process sound better than the
sound card in the Mac. Am I correct on all these points?

Hi-Fi Link says it works with PCs. Does it also work with Macs. I dont'
understand the difference between the Hi-Fi Link and the MD-Port I/O.

These devices apparently do not include a professional Mic jack.

In simple terms what does a soundboard do? Can you get a small one without
many controls? I assume these do have a profession Mic jack.

Thanks to all,

If you are lucky, and your water is soft, you may be able to revive the
machine by THOROUGHLY drying in out. As a minimum, I would remove the
keyboard, hard drive, processor card and disconnect as many of the ribbon
cable connectors as I could reach without disassembling the computer and
let it air dry for a day or so.

I suspect that water has gotten into some of the connectors and is
causing faulty circuits. I suppose you could use a hair dryer on it after
you have done the disconnections to speed things up, just don't over heat

Re: Wallstreet Wavelan Woes

2004-06-05 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
My WS has crashed several times in the last year or two.
It seems to have always been associated with ejecting
my Wavelan card, or with switching from a
Wavelan-based lan to a wired lan.

Before I use it again, I was wondering if there were better
alternatives to the WirelessDriver on SourceForge.
I used my WaveLan Silver card with my Wallstreet and Lombard (both OS
9.2.2) with the Apple Airport drivers.
Under OS9.2.2 the card can be turned off and ejected without any problem.
I upgraded the Wallstreet from OS 8.6 because in 8.6 I couldn't turn the
card off so I had to restart the computer with the Airport extensions
off so I could eject the card.
I understand that the WaveLan cards need other drivers in OSX but have
no first hand experience with OSX.

Re: Minidisc fun

2004-06-05 Thread Kristin Dewey
An iMic connects the minidisc recorder to the computer via a USB plug.
Yes. And it sounds better than just connecting the recorder to the
computer through the line in sound jack, if you have one. Yes.

When I said Soundboard Minidisc, I was referring to plugging my
minidisc recorder directly into the P.A. system that the sound engineer
is mixing the music through at a live music venue. It's the actual
console the soundman uses. I plug my minidisc into back of the
soundboard and record whatever's going through the microphones on stage.
That's a soundboard recording.

For an audience recording, or just recording someone playing in your
living room, you'd just record with a microphone to your minidisc, then
transfer that analog recording to your Mac with an iMic...

If it is the same as the Cube it is 168 pin IIRC, the Pismo requires 144

Re: Wegener Media WS processor upgrades

2004-06-05 Thread Bigbikerbo
I had picked up an Allegro 500mhz from Wegener last year. It runs
perfectly-what more can I say.

I bought it to replace a BlueChip which had the dreaded installation error
(had to return it to PowerLogix). Got a warranty BlueChip replacement, which
ALSO had the same problem-very frustrating. I swore to never again get an upgrade
with software installation requirements-just way too many problems, which led
to my getting the Wegener card. From what I hear, many upgrade cards
requiring software installation are a big problem. I dunno, but I'll never ever get
one which requires software-I nearly lost my mind with the BlueChip issue.

I've since traded out to a Pismo (got it for a song and passed my Wallstreet
off a family member). I'd say (purely subjective comparison) the Wallstreet
with the 500 is almost as fast as my Pismo--well worth the $, IMHO. I ran it on
OS9, and it really was a dream.

Haven't seen much of the 400mhz upgrade, but I'd be int'd to hear how that
one does as well. Just got another Wallstreet 233/0cache that I'd like to
upgrade as well. For the price, it seems like a bargain.

All the best,

Tom

I bought a processor upgrade from Wegener Media which
didn't work despite their absolute assurance. They
finally admitted that it wouldn't work after I sent my

They still have my memory and never compensated me for

having problems but I was the one that got screwed.
Until I get my original memory back I must caution

Well don't use the hair drier with the WS powered. Pop the
batteries, unplug the power adapter and disconnect the PRAM battery.
But it's still better to dry it with gentle heat. Water trapped in
some spots could take weeks to evaporate at room temperature.

Waterlogged wallstreet

2004-06-05 Thread Edward Jackson
Thanks for the advicewhen the Wallstreet was originally watered I took it
completely apart (even the PCMIA cage was out)in under 5 minutes...this may not be
impressive but it was at 6am (and I'm a night owl) while my very sorry wife watched
and hopedit sat for a week before I re-assembled it. I didn't find any real water
but I'm guessing at this point that it's a loss due to a short. So now I'm stuck
w/Gateway desktop. :(

thanks again folks

Recently my Wallstreet was attacked by a glass of water. I took it apart
and there didn't seem to be any water inside the machinebut of course,
now she's dead (and I'm so depressed). If I plug it in it tries to start
up, whiring while the green power light goes on...but I don't think the
hard drive even starts spinning and then it shuts back down. In this
process the screen doesn't light up and I have to wait a couple of hours
for this to happen again (it won't start with the startup button). So the
process (just to repeat) goes like this.

 1. Empty battery bays. Insert power cord.
 2. Startup light comes on, quick whirring sound for 2-3 second.
 3. Sound stops, light goes off, and the machine is dead.
 4. Repeat in an hour with same results.

It doesn't seem to me like the entire machine is shot and with the wide
array of parts on ebay I'm hoping someone could give me an idea on what
this might beany ideas from the Wallstreet family?

If you are lucky, and your water is soft, you may be able to revive the
machine by THOROUGHLY drying in out. As a minimum, I would remove the
keyboard, hard drive, processor card and disconnect as many of the ribbon
cable connectors as I could reach without disassembling the computer and
let it air dry for a day or so.

I suspect that water has gotten into some of the connectors and is
causing faulty circuits. I suppose you could use a hair dryer on it after
you have done the disconnections to speed things up, just don't over heat
 things!

There is also another unfortunate possibility. If the original poster did
try to power it up before it was completely dry, it is possible that
remaining water caused some shorts that could have fried some electronic
components in it which could be permanently damaged, even if the PowerBook
is now let to dry completely...

Also try washing the parts in 90% iso-propyl alcohol. This should
flush out the water. Then let them dry using a mild heat source. A
space heater on it's lowest power setting placed far enough away to
avoid over-heating things will do.

Also try disconnecting everything you can and attempt to boot. Take
out the second memory card (if any), the HD and it's cable. Pull the
battery. Also do a power manager reset.
