In the iBook your one choice is an Airport Card (non Extreme).
Either Airport base station will do. Unless you have immediate plans
to get something that can make use of Airport Extreme (802.11g) I'd
stick with a regular Airport base station (802.11b).

You could use a non-Apple base station but most don't support dialup
and Apple has good support for connecting / disconnecting the modem
remotely.

As for price, check completed auctions.

You'll be able to get a regular Aiport card for you computer. As for
the base, all Apple base stations, including the graphite, have a
built in modem. The extreme station has a USB port for USB printers.
Don't pay more than $95.00 for a graphite or snow, as the Extreme
station is under $200 new. The only real difference between the
Extreme (802.11g) and the regular (802.11b) are the transfer speeds

Thanks to everyone for their insightful thoughts. I have decided to go the
pro route and get the G5's instead of more lower performance models. Even if
the performance gap is not that dramatic or we could get by on non-pro
models, in the near future the dual processors and 64 bit processing the
G5's offer will leap the performance gap when software is optimized.

Again, thanks.

Don't pay more than $95.00 for a graphite or snow, as the Extreme

Unless the bottom has fallen out of the prices in the past 2-3 weeks,
I wouldn't quite go that strong. I know the price of a Dual-Ethernet
(Snow) Base Station was running between $100 and $150. I would think
anything up to $130 or $140 would be reasonable. If the prices have
dropped, I haven't run across it yet.

The only real difference between the
Extreme (802.11g) and the regular (802.11b) are the transfer speeds
between computers within the wireless network. Extreme works best
with a T1 business connection as the source.

It's most advantageous if one is going to be transferring huge files
from computer to computer on a frequent basis.

With a dial up
connection as your main source for the internet, your best option
would be a graphite base station.

That *wouldn't* be my recommendation. As Laurent pointed out, the
Graphite ABS has had too many internal problems to make it a
guaranteed trouble-free purchase. There's no way of knowing whether
a hack decided to fix his own Graphite unit and made a royal mess
of the insides. Plus, the Snow ABS has the extra Ethernet port, so a
future upgrade to broadband won't require a new ABS. The OP will be
able to connect via a Local Area Network (hard-wired Ethernet cable)
*and* Wide Area Network (broadband Internet) with the Snow ABS.

When shopping for one on eBay, be
sure to check that it has a built in modem, as the lesser expensive
  ones didn't.

Excellent advice. That applies to *any* used Apple ABS.

If you want to use the internal Airport slot, yes. You can use a 3rd-
party 802.11g (this is the standard which Apple brands Airport Extreme)
card in the PCMCIA slot; it's not as neat, and there are issues about
compatible drivers - see this list's archives of the last couple of weeks

Updating LInksys Firmware

2004-07-02 Thread Bob Gir.
My iBook, router and base station are described below.

I found the latest update for this router's firmware but, knowing
nothing about PCs, I haven't a clue as to how to go about updating the
Linksys firmware.

I went to the Linksys site where someone told me that there was Mac
help to be found.

Well, I looked around for 15 minutes, following link after link and
could find nothing. Also wrote their tech support a brief, polite
note/request for this same info several days ago. No reply yet.
Ok...Ok...you can stop laughing!!!

Anyone out there with a similar Linksys that can offer a little
guidance, please?

TIA,

Anyone out there with a similar Linksys that can offer a little

Bob:

Versiontracker gives this link:

http://www.mactechnologies.com/pages/tftpinst.html#linksys

I updated mine from my Mac. Went well, but it later started dropping
Earthlink connections. When I tested using the modem connection only to
the Airport base station, the connection problem went away. That has been
about two weeks. I am going to put the router back online over the

Just my experience. Your mileage may vary.

completely obviating the need for any more buttons.

I suspect there's a similar utility for OS X, but since I have a four

contextual menues,
Contextual menus predate Windows by quite a bit...they were present in
the Xerox Alto system that was shown to Apples Mac engineers in those
early days. (I know this because when I came to work here at the
College, we had 4 of the successors to those system as word processing
units, complete with the big 400dpi laser printers, 19 portrait
grayscale monitors and 8 AND 5 1/4 floppy disks. These were the very
first networked systems in the College, using some proprietary Xerox
thing to connect them to a centralized hard drive used for storage.)

This was true when aliases were introduced on Macs, way pre-Win95.
Prior to OS 9, aliases always had their name in italics, since they
were first introduced in OS 7, iirc. It's only recently that they felt
the need to stick the dumb little arrows on..I don't know why, maybe to
make the switchers happy :-P

well there are MASSES of examples
where the Mac OS has improved by copying Windoze!!
Usually by doing it first...
Also, I'm not positive again, but I seem to recall that the column view
in finder is a hangover from NeXT, which, again, predates
Windows95...There was some controversy when Rhapsody was going to have
that as it's *only* file navigation view.

WTB: iBook 12 Display or Bezel Brace w/Clutch

2004-07-02 Thread Jim Scott
I've got a 700 MHz G3 iBook (dual USB) with 12 display. The previous owner
didn't take very good care of it, and the U-shaped titanium bezel brace
inside the display is broken on either side of the clutch cover attaching
screws. The previous owner tried to fix things with SuperGlue. Enough said.
So, I would like to either:

1) Replace the entire display assembly, or

2) Replace the iBook 12 display Bezel Brace with Clutch Assembly, as it's
described in the Apple Service Manual.

If you've got either one of these for sale, please send me -- off-list, of
course -- your price, and estimated shipping to Eureka, CA, 95503. Thanks,

Jim

This was true when aliases were introduced on Macs,
way pre-Win95. Prior to OS 9, aliases always had their
name in italics
And there were utilities to change it to bold etc.
---
It's only recently that they felt the need to stick the
dumb little arrows on..
The argument was merely that the Mac OS has derivities from
Windoze.
---
Also, I'm not positive again, but I seem to recall that the
column view in finder is a hangover from NeXT, which,
again, predates Windows95...There was some controversy
when Rhapsody was going to have that as it's *only* file
navigation view.
Doesn't matter who did what first, fact is that file navigation
is not as complete in Mac OS X compared to Windoze!!

I believe it can boot OS 9, but you have to install OS 9 from the original
Restore CD that came with the computer. I don't believe you can install OS 9
from an OS 9 install CD. That's a shame they lost the CD.

Installing OS X on Walstreet 300MHz

2004-07-02 Thread Larry le Mac
I have just bought a Wallstreet (PDQ) 300MHz with 192MB of RAM
which I am now attempting to install OS X.2 onto, however, when
it has booted of the CD, as soon as the OS X screen appears (with
the progress bar) the backlight switches off and cannot be revived
with key-presses or touchpad-movements, basically I cannot see
what I'm doing.
I had this phenomena on a 233MHz Wallstreet so I know (?) it's
not the PowerBook.
How do I go about solving this so that I can install OS X ?

Got my PowerBook!

2004-07-02 Thread Marcin Wichary
Well, at least sort of. I picked it up -- love the box, the
packaging, the manuals, the design... but I ordered the British
model and it came with British AC plug, which is incompatible
with Dutch sockets. The battery's drained, so I can't use it yet. :I

I completely forgot about this issue, although I partially blame
people at the shop. Today's too late, tomorrow I will try to
exchange the power adapter (or can you just buy a new set
of two European plugs? the old set might be useful as I intend
to visit Great Britain later this year).

I've had this happen while running OS X. The solution for me is to
restart in OS 9, put the laptop to sleep, wake it up then restart
into OS X.

I think XPostFacto supports the Wallstreet, and yes, based on my
experience installing it on a a 300 Mhz iMac, it's worthwhile. Panther
is pretty snappy; it runs roughly as fast as OS 9 will on the same
hardware.

It runs well on a 300 MhzG3 with the caveat that you really don't want

It can be done using XPostfacto from Otherworld Computing
(www.macsales.com).
Whether it's worth it or not is a rather subjective question, and
depends a lot on what you plan to do with the machine, as well as your
own expectations. It also would depend on how much RAM you have
installed. I would recommend maxxing it out if you haven't already done
so.

Doesn't matter who did it first, fact is Windows had it as

 argument, don't you think ?!

Not exactly...back in the early 90's I had the chance to visit Cupertino and
see what Apple was working on. I saw lots of things that didn't make their
way into a shipping OS for quite a while. I remember quite clearly coming
across a Finder feature that I didn't like at all and being told it was an
early implementation and had already been changed quite a bit in a more
recent build that wasn't ready for viewing yet. I also remember being told
it might see the light of day in the next version of the OS, a later
version, or not at all. When it was ready and not before then.

Since I believe 'innovation' and 'Microsoft' are as mutually exclusive as
'quality entertainment' and 'reality tv' I have no trouble believing that
Microsoft employees saw similar demonstrations or heard of them and got
features out the door faster than Apple did. Doing it first and doing it
right are two different things.

Re: Installing OS X on Walstreet 300MHz

2004-07-02 Thread B Gardner
I also had this happen. I was able to get around it by:
Erase the hard drive-twice.
Repartition if needed for the 8 GB exception. (Unnecessary on a HD with
less than or equal to 8 GB)
Run Disk Repair on the newly erased HD. (You would be surprised)
Install OS X on the newly erased HD.
(Install OS X BEFORE installing anything else like OS 9.)

This has worked like a charm.
Also be alert that certain types of RAM won't work. OS X on a WS PB is
very very picky about the RAM.

Good Luck,
Byron

I had this phenomena on a 233MHz Wallstreet so I know (?) it's
not the PowerBook.
How do I go about solving this so that I can install OS X ?

Eudora Question, from OS 9 to OS X

2004-07-02 Thread macnifico
Hi, Listers!
I've been using Eudora in several computers and several versions, and
I always could move my massive amount of mail (around 35 Mb) from
computer to computer and from several OSes, up to OS 9.2.2.
Of course I have it backed up in CD, but I like to have it on hand.
Now I have a Pismo with OS X.3 and I'm wondering if it would be as
easy to move, what with the newer (to me) way of storing things,
where should I move my Mail' file?
Best regards.

iCab Offline Browsing ?

2004-07-02 Thread MacAddictvja
I've been trying to download websites for offline surfing, using iCab 2.9.8,
on my G4 1Ghz iBook, OS X 10.3.4, 768MB RAM.

I've tried downloading websites as both Web cache and Web archive (using
iCab 2.9.8), but neither method is working. When I try to surf the websites
offline, error messages tell me that the web pages are inaccessible, server
could not be found, or that I need to connect in order to access the web
pages.

What could I be doing wrong? I've tried using both Internet Explorer 5.2.3,
and iCab 2.9.8, to surf the downloaded websites while offline, but still
cannot surf offline.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

2 512 sticks vs. 1 1-GB stick

2004-07-02 Thread Claire Hart
I'm ordering a 17 powerbook. Should I get 2 sticks of 512 RAM, or 1
stick of 1GB RAM? Is there an advantage to spreading the 1 GB over the
two slots? I'm thinking that if I do the 1GB stick in one slot, then I
can add another one later and not have to mess with the one already
there.

Second question: Can I have 512 in one slot and 1 GB in the other, or
do they have to match?

I am on digest mode, so if anyone cares to answer this right now,
please send it to me individually as well as to the list, so I can read
it right away.

Thanks,
Claire

2 512 sticks vs. 1 1-GB stick

2004-07-02 Thread Claire Hart
One more question on the RAM issue. What if I get the minimum ram, a
512 stick, then order another 512 stick from Crucial later on? Will
they be compatible? I don't know why I seem to have stuck in my head
the idea that your RAM sticks need to match. Any advice?

Again, if you are going to respond to this tonight, please do so
directly to me as well as to the list, since I am on digest mode and
would like to know the answer to this right away.

Thanks,
Claire
