Everything is relative. I did enjoy the chuckle though. :-)

Re: Pismo vs ibook?

2004-10-05 Thread Andrew
I've carried heavy and/or bulky laptops around as
well, and based on that experience have settled my
preferences on the smaller and lighter machines. Most
of the time the 12 PB is about right is about right,
as I like to watch DVDs when I fly, which is far too
often. For shorter hops or when I have many
connecting flights to make, however, I prefer the
little Toshiba, which despite being stuck with Windows
(may put Linux on it) and having no optical drive, is
light and small enough to just dissappear into my
non-computer carry-on.

8lb laptops were fine in 1993 when that was all you
could get, but now we have more choices and I vote
with my wallet for thin and light.

If you think a Wallstreet is a joy to carry and worth
the power, then you obviously haven't tried a recent
iBook or 12 PowerBook, which are MUCH smaller and
lighter, and far more powerful.

Its funny to see other peoples different tastes.
I've always been for bigger, heavier, faster, and in my opinion better.
When I sold my Duo 280 and bought my 190cs I was happy, then I sold
that and bought a 3400c I was overjoyed. When I sold the 3400c and
bought my Wallstreet I was equally joyous. Now I have this hot 17 as
well.

Likewise, when I sold my tricycle and bought my small bicycle I was
happy, then I sold that and bought a 10 speed mountain bike, which was
way more fun... then I sold that and bought the Saturn, I was pretty
happy. Then I sold the Saturn and bought a Camaro, which is like
living in a dream land of speed and noise and large-ness.

the little house takes me nowhere. When I type anything in the ask a

I'm using Panther on a 17 PB 1.5GHz. My iMac DV400 also is running

and get the usual stuff filling in the big white space: the big X on
the left half and a few links on the right, such as What's New, etc...

Claire
Does the help menu in the Finder says Mac Help? Have you checked, in
Help
Viewer, what is in the Library menu? any Mac Help there? If so,
what
happen if you select it?

-Laurent.
I selected Mac Help under Library, and the Mac Help window filled
in as it should. I clicked here and there, and it works fine. Yeah!
I quit it, then opened it again, and it was blank again, requiring me
to go up to the menu and select it again! Thanks for helping me get
access to it, but any clues as to why I have to add the extra step?

Dunno. As an experiment, you might want to quit Help Viewer. Then, going in
your home directory, go in 'Library', then, inside 'Library', 'Preferences'
and retrieve the files named 'com.apple.help.plist',
'com.apple.helpui.plist' and 'com.apple.helpviewer.plist' and take them out
of the Preferences folder. Then, try again and see if that helps.

-Laurent.

I need some ideas/help

2004-10-05 Thread Peter Webster
I'm running Word 2001 on my Wallstreet (sys 9.1). When I send Word
attachments to non-Mac users (yeah, dark-siders), most of the time they
claim they can't open them-and, often can't. Once in a while one will fly
through, open simply by the other end clicking on the attachment. But
mostly, they can't

I just finished a three hour stint of sending an attachment to a friend and
he wasn't able to open it, until something happened-he doesn't know what or
why-and he got it open.

Can anybody help me with why this happens? And, how do I walk the others
through the process of opening the attachments? I've had serious p.c. types
give up on figuring it out at their end.

Thanks in advance.

1) Make sure the checkbox for 'add extension' is checked in the save
file dialog. If it doesn't have '.doc' on the end a PC doesn't know
what it is.

2) what's your e-mail client? OS X Mail adhered to standards too
rigorously, and many Windows clients cannot properly sort out the
attachments. Sending the file as a .zip or .sit file will fix this. I
don't know of any clients on OS 9 that do this though. Eudora offers a
host of different encodings, though, which can also screw stuff up.

I had been using partitioned discs to separate OS from my data anyway, so
I don't see the fuss in having 2 partitions. Rather I émbraced it as a

Anyways, it's the builtin Remote Access that I use.

SmartMedia printing on the road

2004-10-05 Thread walter
I was following the thread on SmartMedia cards.
I was wondering what you folks do when on the road in terms of printing.
I suppose my questions are:
-any good tiny weensy printers one can usefully take along? I googled
for it and came up either with very expensive ones or very bulky ones,
or both, or perhaps those needing proprietary paper like fax paper. Is
there really nothing clever and spacesaving that can print a few A4
sheets when you're stuck in a hotel room and need to print out the
latest version of your paper or whatever?

-I was thinking of getting one of those cute USB flash memory card that
you can plug into your 'book and move your files there, then go to a
print shop and have them printed. That seems a good alternative,
provided one has access to printing shops nearby and that they accept
such a medium (never asked or tried, so far). But: we have an external
Firewire LaCie (one of the Porsche models) that we use for backup.
Tried to take that to a print shop and their machine would not 'see'
the drive, which came formatted from LaCie and I hadn't bother
reformatting. Given that Panther recognised it without a hitch, I
assumed (for some reason) that Windows machines would be equally
accommodating. The 'net sites selling these flash cards (like Crucial)
say 'mac and pc compatible'. Anyone has any experience of taking files
on one of these things and getting them printed on the road without
hassle?

-given that both our 12 Albook and 20 iMac G5 have Bluetoooth, I was
also wondering whether one can get any of these cards with Bluetooth in
them so that one doesn't even need to plug them into the USB socket?
Maybe this is impossible/impractical, because rather extensive googling
returned no joy in that department.

In short: I would be interested (and grateful) to know what you guys
consider to be the best option for fully compatible printing when on
the road.

Thanks in advance for all your fantastic tips and apologies if the
questions sound daft...

Re: Pismo vs ibook?

2004-10-05 Thread Andrew
That's the difference, I do not program at all, nor do I work in art or
graphics. I use my laptop for business tasks, and as an entertainment
center when I am away. Yes, a 17 LCD is gorgeous, but the 19 LCD on my
desk is probably nicer, as the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse sitting on that
desk are nicer than any laptop built-ins.

Personally, I find OS X delightful on the 12 monitor, and have no issues
when I use Windows XP or Linux (SuSe 9.1) on the 11 of my PC (same 1024X768
as the PB). Personally, I'd rather have fewer toolbars open in Word in
order to have a machine that I can use when I make that 12-hour
trans-Pacific flight everyyear. I guess for me, the reason I own portables
instead of desktops (the Sawtooth is for my daughter, I only use it to share
a printer) is because they are portable, and where portability is concerned,
the more portable the better.

Now if only they'd shave off that optica drive and another 1 1/2 lbs from
the 12 PB, then my dream machine would finally be available for the Mac OS.

Re: Pismo vs ibook?

2004-10-05 Thread Mikael Byström
Andrew said this:

I've carried heavy and/or bulky laptops around as
well, and based on that experience have settled my
preferences on the smaller and lighter machines. Most
of the time the 12 PB is about right is about right,
as I like to watch DVDs when I fly, which is far too
often.

I think that, for me at least, if you only have one machine the display
of the 12 PB is too small. I prefer PB G4 15.2 DVI or later titaniums
and would consider a 17 if my budget could afford it and if I could keep
it my backpack. I don't think the 15.2 are bulky at all and I'm used to
have 5-15 ibs in my backpack anyway (powerbook, baby stuff, grocery
products, books and so on). So when I have only the 'book I don't even
notice it.
For me, the amount of pixels on screen are as important as the
portability of the machine. The 12 is just too small for the work and
fun that I do.

If one have a desktop machine with a 23 cinema display then obviously
the 12 will be a great compliment, but not everyone can afford the
luxury of several machines.

But now I have drifted away from the subject. But so was the 12 PB actually.

Large or small (was Pismo vs ibook?)

2004-10-05 Thread Andrew
I would rather have a 2300c than a Wallstreet. The 2300c was the lightest
Apple laptop ever, and while incapable of running OS X, it IS capable of
wireless internet and office productivity work in comfort. If someone made
a module to replace the old Duo modem with a WiFi card, I'd even take a Duo
(even monochrome) over an 8lb behemoth like the Wallstreet. Just like the
modern machines, the Wallstreet is too big for a coach-class airplane seat,
but a 2400c is perhaps the best airline Mac ever made, at least in terms of
form factor.

While I love OS X, I actually like my 4-year-old laptop PC better in terms
of hardware (the software doesn't come close to comparing, however). That
computer, a Toshiba Portege 3490CT, is only .8 thick, weighs 3.4 lbs and
has 1024X768 resolution on an 11.3 LCD. It is physically smaller in every
dimension than the 12 PB, not to mention considerably lighter. If Apple
made OS X for Intel, I wouldn't even have bought my 12 PB. I used that
laptop as my primary PC for three years (docking station on my desk plugged
into the same 19 LCD I use on my PB today).

Just goes to show that different strokes are for different folks. Plugged
into a large external monitor and with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, the
size of the laptop's built-in screen makes no difference at all save how
much of your desktop it clutters. On the road, however, less is more.

I wanted the bigger screen and faster processor. I never play games so

384MB. It ran Panther from January to May this year. Please don't try and
detract my personal experience. My experiences does not detract yours.

So what if I needed to use XPostFacto? It works very
 very well.

No it doesn't.

Working very very well would be getting it right on the first try. Or
the first few tries. Without me having to look at documentation and
browse through forums.
If you're were using an alpha what can you complain about? I had more
problems with Jaguar than Panther with XPFa11, a14 and I think a17. a9
and some other versions was not very good at all.
Everything worked for me, including the PCMCIAbased airport card, except
for built in sound input that was distorted.
For me Panther was noticeable faster than Jaguar. Especially considering
there was no graphics hardware accelaration support.

Keep in mind that I
use my Wallstreet mostly for Final Cut Pro, Quark Xpress, and
Dreamweaver and Photoshop, and the OSX versions of all these programs
are quite silly on a Wallstreet II.

I used Dreamweaver MX (not the 6.1 update) and Photoshop 7 (only small
images) of those and OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, Bbedit 7, Jedit, Script
Debugger, Apache 2, MySQL, PHP 4, Fast Track Schedule 8, iView Mediepro,
PowerMail 4, Ragtime Solo and XCode (a bit painful, but worked) and WO
5.1 Developer. Another focus perhaps. Most of this WOULDN'T RUN under OS
9, mind you. A 15% slower machine is a small price to pay IMHO. But
except for a few apps, I could have real work done and my experience when
booted into OS 9 was that the machine didn't feel faster overall, rather
I was reminded of all the wait states OS 9 enforces upon you. Don't get
me started on crashes

Of course my Powerbook G4 / 400 is a lot snappier and I want a 1Ghz, but
one step at a time.

it did help. It seems to have fixed the problem. I clicked a few

They are sitting on my desktop at the moment.

One more question: Zinio reader opens at startup. I rarely use it. I

 I can't find such a folder. I checked Zinio's preferences, but the

Well, since the problem is fixed, I guess you can safely trash these
preference files, since Help Viewer probably recreated them anyway.

As for Zinio, check your account in the 'Accounts' system preferences. Look
in the 'Startup Items' for something with 'Zinio' in the name. Then, select
it and press backspace or the little minus button at the bottom left,
below the list. That should take care of it...

No it's not. The 2300c has no ethernet port, no USB port, and no
PCMCIA slots. It can't easily do wireless (though with an ethernet
microdock and an ethernet-wireless transceiver, it's technically
possible).

  If someone made

As the owner of a Duo 230, 280c, 2300c, and several Wallstreets, I'd
take the Wallstreet. The 2300c is a neat machine, but it's DOG SLOW
by any reasonable standard (even when word processing). A fully
featured PCI-architecture sub-notebook (like the 2400c, which was
underpowered and has a low RAM ceiling) would be fantastic, but with
the sub-notebook form comes trade-offs. I wouldn't want to give up
the power of my Wallstreet for the _slight_ gain in portability that
a sub-notebook offers. 7lbs isn't sooo heavy, after all.

Just like the modern machines, the Wallstreet is too big for a
coach-class airplane seat
You think so? I never had any trouble with mine on the airliners
It fit alright on the tray table, though opening the display all the
way could be troublesome if the seat ahead of me were reclined. But
I'd rather be able to see what I'm writing than have to squint at an
itty-bitty screen.

Re: Large or small

2004-10-05 Thread Claire Hart
Before I bought my 17 PowerBook, I got on this list and asked
questions. I wasn't sure if I wanted a tower or a PB. As the various
opinions came in, I began to lean toward a PowerBook, but probably a
15 one. A few more posts here and there, and I went for the 17
instead. I love it. I will admit that it's a little heavy when I put
it in my purse; in fact, 1/3 of it sticks out the top. (I've only done
that once, and it was because I didn't want to leave it in my car while
attending a lengthy meeting.)

The thing is, I was replacing my iMac 400DV, and I took that thing on
nearly every road trip I made (really). And possibly this PB will have
to last as long as the iMac has lasted as my most current Macintosh
computer. So I wanted big, and I wanted full-featured. I don't think
it's necessary for this discussion to almost turn into an argument.
Yes, this PowerBook is not a lightweight, but I don't think others need
to refer to it as a boat anchor. What's the point of that? Speaking
of boat anchors, my laptop case weighs a ton. But then I have
EVERYTHNG in it, including one of those fan things that sits under your
laptop (which I rarely use), ALL of the car adaptors, S-video
connectors, power cables, and extra long RCA cable to connect to the
TV, a couple of MacAddict disks, PrintShop CD, iPod and ALL of its
parts, a couple of blank CD-Rs, about a half dozen Mac magazines, and a
few manuals (InDesign Classroom in a Book plus one on Final Cut Express
are currently in there.) (I feel like I am carrying around a diaper
bag for the baby again.) Shaving two inches and a pound off of this
baby would probably not make my case weigh much less.

Having said that, I love my 17 PowerBook. I love it on road trips,
because our movie screen is big enough for several people to see. I
can have lots of stuff open and see a corner or edge of everything. It
fits stably on my lap with lots of hand-resting room. The speakers
right there on either side of the keys are nice - Mail is sent out in
stereo from left to right. People look over and say, Nice. When I
go back to my iMac, it seems small, like my Centris seemed after I got
my iMac. Big or small is relative to your needs. It is not
lightweight, but it is just right for me.

Re: Large or small (was Pismo vs ibook?)

2004-10-05 Thread Andrew
If offered a free Wallstreet or a free Duo 280, AND THAT WAS MY ENTIRE
COMPUTER BUDGET, I'd take the wallstreet and immediately sell it on eBay so
I could buy something smaller and better, like the 2400c.

I don't understand the logic behind this statement though.

I honestly do not believe if somebody offered you a free Wallstreet OR
a free Duo 280 (monochrome) you would take the Duo. You could not take
both, and you could not sell the one that you take, and you had to keep
it permanently and use it daily, there's no way you would take a Duo.

Did you go ahead an buy applecare? I would highly recommend it for

worth for applecare. And Apple will provide service from you door (in
the way of an overnight shipping box).

(I've only
done that once, and it was because I didn't want to leave it in my car
while attending a lengthy meeting.)

The thing is, I was replacing my iMac 400DV, and I took that thing on
nearly every road trip I made (really). And possibly this PB will
have to last as long as the iMac has lasted as my most current
Macintosh computer. So I wanted big, and I wanted full-featured. I
don't think it's necessary for this discussion to almost turn into an
argument. Yes, this PowerBook is not a lightweight, but I don't think
others need to refer to it as a boat anchor. What's the point of
that? Speaking of boat anchors, my laptop case weighs a ton. But
then I have EVERYTHNG in it, including one of those fan things that
sits under your laptop (which I rarely use), ALL of the car adaptors,
S-video connectors, power cables, and extra long RCA cable to connect
to the TV, a couple of MacAddict disks, PrintShop CD, iPod and ALL of
its parts, a couple of blank CD-Rs, about a half dozen Mac magazines,
and a few manuals (InDesign Classroom in a Book plus one on Final Cut
Express are currently in there.) (I feel like I am carrying around a
diaper bag for the baby again.) Shaving two inches and a pound off of
this baby would probably not make my case weigh much less.

Having said that, I love my 17 PowerBook. I love it on road trips,
because our movie screen is big enough for several people to see. I
can have lots of stuff open and see a corner or edge of everything.
It fits stably on my lap with lots of hand-resting room.

No it's not. The 2300c has no ethernet port, no USB port, and no

 possible).

I'd rather be able to see what I'm writing than have to squint at an
 itty-bitty screen.

rigorously, and many Windows clients cannot properly sort out the

don't know of any clients on OS 9 that do this though. Eudora offers a
host of different encodings, though, which can also screw stuff up.

Eudora 3.1. Any advantage into moving to the latest version (for doing this
sort of stuff)?

Is there a specific reason for staying with 3.1? BTW which flavor?
Qualcomm still had Light and Pro back then. I don't remember when
they discontinued Eudora Light, but once you purchased Pro, all of
the new versions were free until version 4.3 as I recall.

There are a ton of reasons for going all the way to 4.2 (still free
for Pro owners). It would take a copyrighted manual to explain them
all. The 4 or 5 top reasons IMO are:
1. A great new search/find engine -- much faster
2. Multiple accounts became simple with Personalities
3. The ability of making changes in Eudora with clickable x-settings
4. Better text-wrapping via something called flow-control
5. Colorized quoted text makes multi-layered messages easier to follow.

Really appreciate the help!

It sure wouldn't hurt to give 4.2 1 try, unless you are using Light
now and don't want to pay for Pro. But Pro is definitely worth it.

Lombard startup problems

2004-10-05 Thread csean
Hi,
I'm trying to diagnose a Lombard that was working well until it got its LCD
panel replaced. I guess something could've been put back together wrong.

The problem is that now, to boot the Lombard, you have to use the Reset
button on the back, near the modem port. Otherwise it won't boot.

What do you think? PRAM battery? Or something worse?
Any help much appreciated. Thanks,
Chris

Yep, the blanket statement that the Wallstreet is too big for Coach
Class on an airplane was indeed nonsense. I've used mine that way a
number of times. I'm careful with it when I do, but then I'm careful
with it no matter where I use it.

You know it's kind of interesting. Most know that Mac owners are
almost religious when it comes to their loyalty for their Macs. But
it seems that Wallstreet owners and maybe even Pismo owners make up a
distinct sub-culture within the Mac community. The vast majority of
Wallstreet and Pismo owners have an extra zeal and loyalty regarding
their PowerBooks. It's not surprising that there are so many current
owners of these 4-6 year old models on this list.

If you want a guaranteed way to raise the ire of a PowerBook owner,
just say something bad about their Wallstreet or Pismo. :-

United, Delta, Southwest and Alaska for domestic, United, Asiana and JAL for
international. Yes, a Wallstreet can be used, if you shove the base of the
computer against your chest and only open the display halfway, which makes
for a very awkward typing position.

The small machines, on the other hand, are quite comfortable to use on a
tray table in coach, and even allow some empty space between my
larger-than-I'd-prefer gut and the forward edge of my laptop.
