Re: Security for traveling PowerBook

2004-10-19 Thread Bruce Mitchell
I'm interested in your advice on how to protect one's laptop in airports.

My main strategy has been to carry my PowerBook in a regular case that does
not look like a laptop carrier. And I never take my eyes off it, even when
it has to go through the x-ray machine; I don't allow anyone to rush me or
distract me from paying attention.

  Bob

I'm interested in your advice on how to protect one's laptop in airports.

If you can wade through my extended reply to Brent (just sent out), I
included that information there.

My main strategy has been to carry my PowerBook in a regular case that does
not look like a laptop carrier. And I never take my eyes off it, even when
it has to go through the x-ray machine; I don't allow anyone to rush me or
distract me from paying attention.

Sounds like you know precisely how to protect your laptop. Brent
indicated that this was going to be the first (if not one of the
first) time(s) he would be taking a laptop on a trip, so I included
things that those of us who are veterans of PB travel probably
already know.

I have seen a number of people say they try to disguise their
computer bag. I have never done that. I don't care if they know what
it is, if I don't let it out of my sight, period. Plus my computer
bag carries practically *everything* thing I need for my PowerBook,
including a powerstrip, Zip drive, long Ethernet cable, PCMCIA
cards** and cables, emergency CDs etc. I need a whole case with
associated pockets for all that stuff. :-)

**FWIW small 10-count zipper-up CD pouches make the best PC card
carriers. They're a little bit bulky, but really great for protecting
the cards from damage. And they're usually pretty cheap, if not free,
at conventions and trade-shows.

I'm finally taking my book on the
road and would appreciate thoughts and suggestions as to how to
 secure it.

It would help to know what kind of environment you will be concerned

I've heard of firmware password and searched and seen some
software that supposedly sends a data packet when connected to the

I'm not sure what you are referring to here. Do you mean software

There are 2 or 3 similar programs, but I'm not sure this is what you

If you are concerned about physical security, let me address that
issue with which I am familiar. I have used the Defcon 1 unit for a
number of years. It's a combination of a security cable and a
piercing audio alarm which is set off by a user-adjustable motion
sensor. Noting the paragraph below starting with Keep in mind...,
the Defcon 1 is one of the best systems I have run across.

This one I haven't explored, but you may want to take a look:

There's not much you can do to prevent it, other than keeping it with
 you all of the time.

BTW I also have some advice on how to protect your laptop in
 airports, if you are interested.

Bob:
   Thanks for your response.
I will provide more specifics, sorry I did not provide more details.

It's always a good idea to provide as much information as possible.
It helps folks like me better understand what you're actually
needing. :-)

Mode of transport is A) airplane

My opinion on taking a laptop on an airplane is to always make it one
of my carry-on bags. I would never have it shipped in the cargo hold,
even if it was in a suitcase with clothes or other items. My PB is
**never** out of my sight. And I never store it in an overhead
compartment in the plane. It's far too easy for someone to carelessly
knock it out onto the floor. I always put mine under the seat in
front of me.

Another hint that many of us use -- don't travel with your laptop
turned off. Just put it to sleep. Then when you are asked to turn it
on by airport security, just tap a key instead of waiting for a cold
boot.

I'm going to bypass things like connectors for power-jacks in some
sections of some airlines, as well as using wireless networks in
commercial airports.

B) car

The key issue when taking a laptop in a car IMO is never leave the PB
where is can be seen and/or stolen. It only takes a knowledgeable
thief a few seconds to break into a a vehicle and escape. I would
lock it up in the trunk, even if I was stopping at a McDonalds. But
then, I'm an extra cautious type of guy. :-)

Temporary shelter is A) motel

This could be your biggest concern. From motel cleaning people to
break-in thieves, motels are very high security risks for a laptop.

I would do one of the following:
1. Take the laptop with me when actually leaving the premises.
2. At least put it some place out of plain view (at the top the
closet under an extra pillow or blanket, I have even put mine in the
tub)
3. Secure it with a security cable/alarm.

B) conference

Tough when you have to go to the bathroom, huh? g

I try to make friends with someone next to me and ask them to watch
my laptop when I'm leaving my seat during a break or whatever (and in
that type of environment, I'm as concerned about someone knocking it
off a seat or a seat tray as I am about someone stealing it)

As crazy as it sounds, I would take it with me when I went to lunch.

Requesting suggestions to provide difficultly to physical transport (stealing)

One of the *advantages* of beefed up security at airports is that
items being stolen at the X-ray machines should be dramatically less.
However, maybe out of habit, I'm still extremely cautious when
putting mine through the X-ray machine. If someone like Steve Wozniak
can have his laptop stolen (at LAX), I think it's worth paying
attention to. Just make sure the following doesn't happen to you.

A common ploy has been to choose a victim and a party of 2

take these books to any part of the house, upstairs or downstairs

functioning without drops or loss.
So IOW, it may not be a problem at all? I seem to recall reading
something about these along time ago, in reference to something
inside that gets dislocated that could cause poor reception too.
Maybe the antenna? As I remember, you could put whatever it was back
into the proper place and reception would be much improved. I think I
might do some googling on this..
I had asked a similar question some time ago and what I gathered from
the replies was that the airport issue was fixed with the 867/1000
Titanium iteration. Maybe also the 800 was mentioned but I think the
problem still existed in the 667.

cheers, gianfranco
The airport range may have been improved in later models, but it is
still crap in all ti-books. You can get acceptable reception by getting
a third party wifi card with an external antennae.

StuffBak

LapCop
http://homepage.mac.com/sweetcocoa/lapcop.html

Some even mark their laptop with a UV pen for later identification.

So yes I do have a cable lock type from Kensington but most motel
furniture can be easily broken to untangle the cable.

There was a huge brouhaha within the last year or 18 months about how
easy it was proven that the Kensington security system could be
bypassed with such simple things as a ballpoint pen. I don't have a
URL handy, but you should be able to pull up the information on
Google with keywords like Kensington security bypass or just
security cable.

I have no vested interest in promoting the Defcon-1. But the thing I
like about it is the additional motion sensor that can be set, so
even if someone cuts the cable, or moves the device to which it is
attached (though most rooms have something that is bolted down and
immovable), the audio alarm will start screeching. One thing thieves
don't like is attention.

I currently do have login at startup but have heard the open firmware
password prevents startup from a CD?

That's true. But unless it's a work situation (where other people may
know how to access your laptop, or even *want* to), I'm not sure how
critical this issue is.

There are potential serious consequences to using Open Firmware
passwords. You definitely don't want to forget what it is. And, this
little goodie was true at one time, I don't know if it has been
corrected or not -- If an Open Firmware password includes a capital
U, the password won't be recognized by your Mac. You can enter it as
a password, but it will never allow you to use the Mac

If you still want to know about it read:
  http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107666

Go to here and download the application and Read Me file:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/openfirmwarepassword.html

I was alluding to MacPhone Home type software, I just couldn't
remember any software names, but would like to know if it actually is
worth installing if they are just going to format the drive and
reinstall the OS?

I've never used these types of programs. Maybe some of the list
members have. (and the companies may have user's comments on their
web-sites (??))

I welcome your thoughts and advice.

I don't consider myself an expert on the subject. I just have tried
to be aware of anti-theft issues ever since I've had a PowerBook. I
would certainly welcome opinions and additional suggestions from
other list members. I'd still like to learn of other good ideas.

That's why I'm CC'ing this back to the list. I assume you won't mind, Brent.

P.S. Sorry for the length of this missive.

every word is still marked as wrong until one clicks

Are there any remedies, as opposed to workarounds ?

The software should be included for any OS you can install on it. For the
older OS 9, you might have to look for an update to the DVD Player
application.

New iBooks

2004-10-19 Thread Darkwolf45
I don't know about those on here, but as usual, there have been people wanting
speculation on any new line of iBooks coming out on the Apple boards. Of course Apple
won't have any specualtion or rumors going around.
In any event, I thought I'd toot my own horn. I claimed a few months ago that there
would be new iBooks at the end of october or beginning of november with a minor speed
bump and maybe one or two added features. Sure enough, this morning Apple announced
new iBooks, just as I expected.
Changes are as follows:
14 1.33 GHz vs old 1.2 GHz
14 1.33 GHz vs old 1.0 GHz
12 1.2 GHz vs old 1.0 GHz
the top line model has a standard superdrive now, and all models now have built in
Airport Extreme as standard.
Just FYI in case some didn't knwo this already.

No such luck, different form factor on the cards.
Still you are correct that the new iBook is a far
better computer than the old Ti. Much more powerful,
better video, combo drive instead of DVD ROM and most
important, that new computer smell. All you lose is
the screen size, but you make it up in lighter weight
and smaller form factor (my choice any day).

Display quality ibook vs. powerbook

2004-10-19 Thread Sam
Looking for opinions on the display quality of the current generation iBook
and Powerbook. Realizing LCD size, aspect ratio, screen resolution and video
components are different, does the Powerbook give an appreciably better
picture for everyday use and playing DVDs, or is the difference negligible
for those uses?

Stated another way, if someone wanted to get a laptop for watching DVDs,
will the Powerbook give a better picture?

Well the 15 17 inch PowerBooks are widescreen so they would better for
playing movies but other than that I don't think the is any real
difference in the displays.

Re: Bob Re: Security for traveling PowerBook - Part 1

2004-10-19 Thread Timothy Luoma
Another suggestion. Targus makes a nice laptop backpack.
A) Doesn't look like a laptop bag (unless someone knows the name Targus)
B) Frees your hands so you aren't tempted to put it down when looking
at something else (or if you need to go to the bathroom you don't have
to set your laptop bag down on the floor).

Of course if you travel in a 3 piece suit, wearing a backpack is a bit
of a fashion statement, but not having my Powerbook stolen is more
important to me.

Re: Display quality ibook vs. powerbook

2004-10-19 Thread Ben Dyer
I use both an iBook G4 and a 15 aluminium PBG4 regularly. The
PowerBook's display is vastly better than the iBook's. Viewing angle is
much wider (very useful when watching DVDs while lying down, as it's
hard to get exactly the right vertical angle), there's much more colour
definition, and the screen didn't require as much calibration to get it
to look remotely acceptable. I personally was very unimpressed by the
iBook's display quality, it seems that Apple has simply used the
cheapest displays it could find. Even my comparatively ancient
PowerBook G3s have better displays.

That said, why not go to an Apple dealer and compare the screens side
by side? It may well be that iBook screens have improved over the past
year, or that you're willing to put up with inferior quality if it
comes at a much lower price.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: TiBook 667 ID and wifi reception

2004-10-19 Thread Dan K

I had asked a similar question some time ago and what I gathered from
the replies was that the airport issue was fixed with the 867/1000
Titanium iteration. Maybe also the 800 was mentioned but I think the

MTH [EMAIL PROTECTED] replied:
The airport range may have been improved in later models, but it is
still crap in all ti-books. You can get acceptable reception by getting
a third party wifi card with an external antennae.

I was intrigued by this thought, so went down to my basement shop and
looked over a pair of TiBooks, a 500 mHz and a 1 gHz (just shells
actually) to see if there was any discernable difference between the
antenna arraigements.

Honestly, I can't see anything that looks to be significant. While the
antenna boards are not the same parts, they have the same circuitry (such
as it is!) and location, the later boards being slightly smaller than the
early ones. Also, there appears to be the same absence of anti-EMI
coating under the plastic edge where they reside.

I think the main problem with TiBook reception is the antennae location,
down low at the sides of the case where it's easy to block them with your
hands or other radiation blockers. I have big hands that tend to flop
over the side edges, so maybe reception problems are worse for those
folks with larger hands, or those who rest their hands over those edges
at any rate? OTOH . . .

Interestingly, just last night I rebuilt _another_ 667 DVI and it seems

Re: TiBook 667 ID and wifi reception

OTOH . . .

Interestingly, just last night I rebuilt _another_ 667 DVI and it seems
to have much better reception than did my old 667 DVI on its built-in
antennae. Maybe I'm just dreaming . . . perhaps I better do some
scientific tests to see what's up!
So I've narrowed my choices down to either a DVI TiBook, or G4 iBook
(14). Since my home is a smaller one level wood framed house, the
furtherest I ever get away from my Sawtooth basestation isn't really
more than 20', and I rarely use Airport outside the house. If I take it
down to my shop, I have an iPAQ connection point that I don't get more
than 30' from with no walls to interfere, so maybe Airport reception on
the tiBook wouldn't be a real big deal. I have an external wifi card too
if needed. And TiBooks have been around long enough to know what typical
problems there are with them. OTOH, the G4 iBooks are still fairly new,
so the jury is still out on those, but even used would likely still have
a warranty and be eligable for Applecare. Tried and true versus new and
unknown. Pretty tough call!
Opinions? Recommendations? First hand experience with the G4 iBook?
Also, other than eBay or the swap list, where would be a good place to
look for a good used DVI TiBook?

  don't like is attention.

I agree with you that it's good, however it is HIGHLY sensitive, such
that even the slightest movement can send off that annoying chirp
unintentionally,

I haven't had an occasion to use mine for a while, but I recall that
the less sensitive setting is nowhere near as sensitive as the
highest setting. It allows for some bumping before setting off the
alarm. I agree that the highest setting is extremely sensitive, but
that's the way it's supposed to be.

I usually put a note on my PB if I leave it out in the hotel room, to
warn the cleaning personnel not to bump into the desk or the
computer. :-)

which makes it difficult to use in a meeting... plus
it chirps when you activate it and deactivate it.

I don't use my security cable in conferences or meetings, so I don't
have a problem with the connect/disconnect chirp. But if did, I think
I would just say Tough, one chip, live with it. Now everybody knows
better than to try and swipe it.

Mine also refused to unlock a few years ago. I know I had the code
right (it was my birthday ;-) but it wouldn't open and repeatedly set
the siren off. I finally dropped it in a bucket of water in complete
frustration (it was NOT attached to the laptop at the time).

Wow, that's not good at all. Did you by any chance try a new battery
at that point? I don't know that it would have made any difference,
but it's something I would have tried. And it seems that there is a
way to reset it back to factory defaults, but I would have to check
the owners instructions to be sure.

I sympathize with your frustration. I hope your experience is an
anomaly for the Defcon-1.

Still, I would recommend it to anyone who wants as much security as you
can get.

It's nice to know that someone else agrees with me. g Plus, it's
reasonably priced as well.

BTW for anyone that's interested, late last night I ran down the
reference for the security risk with the Kensington security cables:

I was away from home and had to fly back... I didn't want to try and
explain it to security, which is why I dumped it.

IIRC I paid about $50... expensive for as short of a time as it worked.
