Sounds like you know precisely how to protect your laptop. Brent indicated that this was going to be the first (if not one of the first) time(s) he would be taking a laptop on a trip, so I included things that those of us who are veterans of PB travel probably already know. I have seen a number of people say they try to disguise their computer bag. I have never done that. I don't care if they know what it is, if I don't let it out of my sight, period. Plus my computer bag carries practically *everything* thing I need for my PowerBook, including a powerstrip, Zip drive, long Ethernet cable, PCMCIA cards** and cables, emergency CDs etc. I need a whole case with associated pockets for all that stuff. :-) **FWIW small 10-count zipper-up CD pouches make the best PC card carriers. They're a little bit bulky, but really great for protecting the cards from damage. And they're usually pretty cheap, if not free, at conventions and trade-shows. It would help to know what kind of environment you will be concerned about -- motel/hotel room? conference room? someone else's house? something else? I've heard of firmware password and searched and seen some software that supposedly sends a data packet when connected to the net that helps zero in on its location. Is any of those software programs worth while? I'm not sure what you are referring to here. Do you mean software that sends and email message indicating its IP address *after* the unit has been stolen? If that's the case, check... MacPhoneHome which works under both OS 8/9 and OS X. $29.95 per download/license. http://www.brigadoonsoftware.com/purchase.html There are 2 or 3 similar programs, but I'm not sure this is what you are wanting. If you are concerned about physical security, let me address that issue with which I am familiar. I have used the Defcon 1 unit for a number of years. It's a combination of a security cable and a piercing audio alarm which is set off by a user-adjustable motion sensor. Noting the paragraph below starting with Keep in mind..., the Defcon 1 is one of the best systems I have run across. http://www.portinc.com/defcon.htm still in the $50 range I believe. This one I haven't explored, but you may want to take a look: http://www.fmjpadlock.com Keep in mind, that if someone **really** wants to steal your laptop. There's not much you can do to prevent it, other than keeping it with you all of the time. BTW I also have some advice on how to protect your laptop in airports, if you are interested. Bob: Thanks for your response. I will provide more specifics, sorry I did not provide more details. It's always a good idea to provide as much information as possible. It helps folks like me better understand what you're actually needing. :-) Mode of transport is A) airplane My opinion on taking a laptop on an airplane is to always make it one of my carry-on bags. I would never have it shipped in the cargo hold, even if it was in a suitcase with clothes or other items. My PB is **never** out of my sight. And I never store it in an overhead compartment in the plane. It's far too easy for someone to carelessly knock it out onto the floor. I always put mine under the seat in front of me. Another hint that many of us use -- don't travel with your laptop turned off. Just put it to sleep. Then when you are asked to turn it on by airport security, just tap a key instead of waiting for a cold boot. I'm going to bypass things like connectors for power-jacks in some sections of some airlines, as well as using wireless networks in commercial airports. B) car The key issue when taking a laptop in a car IMO is never leave the PB where is can be seen and/or stolen. It only takes a knowledgeable thief a few seconds to break into a a vehicle and escape. I would lock it up in the trunk, even if I was stopping at a McDonalds. But then, I'm an extra cautious type of guy. :-) Temporary shelter is A) motel This could be your biggest concern. From motel cleaning people to break-in thieves, motels are very high security risks for a laptop. I would do one of the following: 1. Take the laptop with me when actually leaving the premises. 2. At least put it some place out of plain view (at the top the closet under an extra pillow or blanket, I have even put mine in the tub) 3. Secure it with a security cable/alarm. B) conference Tough when you have to go to the bathroom, huh? g I try to make friends with someone next to me and ask them to watch my laptop when I'm leaving my seat during a break or whatever (and in that type of environment, I'm as concerned about someone knocking it off a seat or a seat tray as I am about someone stealing it) As crazy as it sounds, I would take it with me when I went to lunch. Requesting suggestions to provide difficultly to physical transport (stealing) One of the *advantages* of beefed up security at airports is that items being stolen at the X-ray machines should be dramatically less. However, maybe out of habit, I'm still extremely cautious when putting mine through the X-ray machine. If someone like Steve Wozniak can have his laptop stolen (at LAX), I think it's worth paying attention to. Just make sure the following doesn't happen to you. I had asked a similar question some time ago and what I gathered from the replies was that the airport issue was fixed with the 867/1000 Titanium iteration. Maybe also the 800 was mentioned but I think the problem still existed in the 667. cheers, gianfranco The airport range may have been improved in later models, but it is still crap in all ti-books. So yes I do have a cable lock type from Kensington but most motel furniture can be easily broken to untangle the cable. There was a huge brouhaha within the last year or 18 months about how easy it was proven that the Kensington security system could be bypassed with such simple things as a ballpoint pen. I don't have a URL handy, but you should be able to pull up the information on Google with keywords like Kensington security bypass or just security cable. I have no vested interest in promoting the Defcon-1. But the thing I like about it is the additional motion sensor that can be set, so even if someone cuts the cable, or moves the device to which it is attached (though most rooms have something that is bolted down and immovable), the audio alarm will start screeching. One thing thieves don't like is attention. I currently do have login at startup but have heard the open firmware password prevents startup from a CD? That's true. There are potential serious consequences to using Open Firmware passwords. You definitely don't want to forget what it is. And, this little goodie was true at one time, I don't know if it has been corrected or not -- If an Open Firmware password includes a capital U, the password won't be recognized by your Mac. New iBooks
I don't know about those on here, but as usual, there have been people wanting speculation on any new line of iBooks coming out on the Apple boards. Of course Apple won't have any specualtion or rumors going around. In any event, I thought I'd toot my own horn. I claimed a few months ago that there would be new iBooks at the end of october or beginning of november with a minor speed bump and maybe one or two added features. Sure enough, this morning Apple announced new iBooks, just as I expected. Changes are as follows: 14 1.33 GHz vs old 1.2 GHz 14 1.33 GHz vs old 1.0 GHz 12 1.2 GHz vs old 1.0 GHz the top line model has a standard superdrive now, and all models now have built in Airport Extreme as standard. more than I would pay for an older used TiBook with no warranty. I just wonder if I could use my regular Airport card instead of the AE? I'm currently using my Sawtooth as a software basestation for my Icebook, so I have no need for AE as I wouldn't be My guess is that it's integrated on the motherboard. Think of it as being somewhat future proofed that way. You can sell your original airport card for quite a bit of money now anyway. Steve -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Bob Re: Security for traveling PowerBook - Part 1
Another suggestion. Targus makes a nice laptop backpack. A) Doesn't look like a laptop bag (unless someone knows the name Targus) B) Frees your hands so you aren't tempted to put it down when looking at something else (or if you need to go to the bathroom you don't have to set your laptop bag down on the floor). Of course if you travel in a 3 piece suit, wearing a backpack is a bit of a fashion statement, but not having my Powerbook stolen is more important to me. Re: Display quality ibook vs. powerbook
I use both an iBook G4 and a 15 aluminium PBG4 regularly. The PowerBook's display is vastly better than the iBook's. Viewing angle is much wider (very useful when watching DVDs while lying down, as it's hard to get exactly the right vertical angle), there's much more colour definition, and the screen didn't require as much calibration to get it to look remotely acceptable. I personally was very unimpressed by the iBook's display quality, it seems that Apple has simply used the cheapest displays it could find. Even my comparatively ancient PowerBook G3s have better displays. That said, why not go to an Apple dealer and compare the screens side by side? It may well be that iBook screens have improved over the past year, or that you're willing to put up with inferior quality if it comes at a much lower price. Maybe I'm just dreaming . . . perhaps I better do some scientific tests to see what's up! So I've narrowed my choices down to either a DVI TiBook, or G4 iBook (14). Since my home is a smaller one level wood framed house, the furtherest I ever get away from my Sawtooth basestation isn't really more than 20', and I rarely use Airport outside the house. If I take it down to my shop, I have an iPAQ connection point that I don't get more than 30' from with no walls to interfere, so maybe Airport reception on the tiBook wouldn't be a real big deal. I have an external wifi card too if needed. And TiBooks have been around long enough to know what typical problems there are with them. OTOH, the G4 iBooks are still fairly new, so the jury is still out on those, but even used would likely still have a warranty and be eligable for Applecare. Tried and true versus new and unknown. Pretty tough call! Opinions? Recommendations? First hand experience with the G4 iBook? Also, other than eBay or the swap list, where would be a good place to look for a good used DVI TiBook? I agree with you that it's good, however it is HIGHLY sensitive, such that even the slightest movement can send off that annoying chirp unintentionally, I haven't had an occasion to use mine for a while, but I recall that the less sensitive setting is nowhere near as sensitive as the highest setting. It allows for some bumping before setting off the alarm. I agree that the highest setting is extremely sensitive, but that's the way it's supposed to be.
