OS X first timer - blank password

2004-12-02 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Hi all,
My sister installed Jaguar on her Wallstreet last night, and she
managed not to provide a password during the installation. Now she's
trying to install software, and it's asking for the admin password.
She says it won't let her leave the password field blank.

Is there any way to reset the password, or will she have to reinstall OS X?
I'm out of my element here, as I'm just getting started w/ OS X
myself. I suggested tying the Users panel in System Preferences, or
trying passwd in the terminal, but I don't know if either will allow
her to set a new password.

Ideas?
Thanks,
Drew

Drew,
The administrator password is an administrator user's login
password. You should be able to reset the password by booting with
an install CD, and there is an option to reset your password from the
Installer menu. Follow the onscreen instructions.

You can also change the password from the CLI in Terminal. But not if
you can't get there. :-)

If you want to tinker a little bit, try the password Mac User and see
if it works. IIRC that's the default file sharing password and might
be the default account password.

Boot off of the install disk and you can set/change the password.

Re: Pbk G3 reformat help

2004-12-02 Thread Kristina Rost
Hi John,

I did as you suggested...but I got a black screen with porgrammer like
instructions...if you want to continue to boot type mac-boot and press
return or the same with shut-down.

When I type mac-boot and return I get a small OS logo with a line of
programmer type under the logo that makes no sense to me...and nothing.

Kristina

Try restarting your PB from the OS9...Once restarted select the 8.6 CD as your
 next startup drive.

I want to erase the pb and clean install the 8.6. except I can't get the pb
 to boot off the cd.

Re: Pbk G3 reformat help

2004-12-02 Thread John McGibney
Somehow your machine is starting in Open Firmware mode. Nothing serious,
just unnerving if you're not into X's inner workings. Try this from an Apple
tech article:

Open Firmware.

To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return What's that supposed
to mean? If all you did was turn on your computer, it probably means you
need to reset your Mac's basic settings called parameter RAM (PRAM) and Open
Firmware.

If this happens every time you turn on your computer, reset the computer's
parameter RAM (PRAM).

If the message still appears after you reset PRAM, reset the Open Firmware
settings:

1. Instead of typing mac-boot at the Open Firmware prompt, type:
   reset-nvram
2. Press Return.
3. At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-all
4. Press Return.

Once restarted try selecting the OS9 System Folder or your 8.5 CD. Hopefully
it should take this time.

To try forcing boot from CD try these 2 combos:
1. Hold C at startup
2. Hold Command-Option-Delete at startup.

If you press C at boot time and the PowerBook doesn't boot from the CD, it
can only be one of three things: the CD is bad, the CD-ROM drive is bad or
an OpenFirmware password was set.

Aluminum and Alzheimer's

2004-12-02 Thread Daniel De L'eau
Okay, here we go, I've wanted to post this question for a long time,
but it seems somewhat inflammitory, at least on another forum.

Is there the possibility of absorbing aluminum through your skin from
the palmrest of the AlBook? I've heard people complain of corrosion
on the AlBook due to contact with sweat from the skin, so it seems
like a possibility that aluminum molecules are being disloged.

I know the links to alzheimer's disease are debated, but I
personally don't cook on aluminum or drink from aluminum soda cans.
Seems to me the TiBook would be safer.

Opinions?

Re: Pbk G3 reformat help

2004-12-02 Thread Kristina Rost

If you press C at boot time and the PowerBook doesn't boot from the CD, it
can only be one of three things: the CD is bad, the CD-ROM drive is bad or
 an OpenFirmware password was set.

Thanks Laurent,

I have tried my another 8.6 CD that I used for my faithful and heavy G3
beige...also I tried to boot the 8.5 that came with the beige... still
defauts to 9.2

Like I said I have used the CD-ROM to load the Latin Vocab drill
program...doesn't that mean it is working?

so does this leave that thats still something with the OpenFirmware
password, and isn't that what John was advising?

if not how can I find out what the password might be?

I still have contact with the seller, who has been helpful, I just didn't
want to bother him to much...i do have the option of returning the Lombard
within 30 days, but I really wanted it.

Well, forget about OpenFirmware password. I just checked on the Apple web
site and it's only supported starting with PowerBook G3 FireWire (Pismo) and
up.

So, although you were able to load the Latin Vocab drill program, I would
still guess that there is a problem with the CD-ROM drive. My assumption is
that not the same sectors on a CD are read whether you're accessing data
from it or booting from it.

Are you getting the same result if you try to boot from the 8.5 system
install CD than the 8.6 system install CD? I mean, I'm not sure that you
would be able to boot from 8.5 on a Lombard. Maybe you can, I'm not sure.
But if you get exactly the same problem, then there is something wrong about
the drive.

Now, since this thread has been going on for some time now, I'm not sure if
you tried this or not, but have you tried setting up the startup disk after
booting in OS X? Did that work at all? I'm getting low on ideas...

OK, next question, are there any replacement/upgrade drives so I can
 get CDRW and maybe DVDRW?

There are a few places that will sell you MCE replacement drives, but
they're very expensive, almost as much as the total value of your Pismo.
Other alternatives include the purchase of a bare CDRW drive on places like
eBay, removing the old DVD-ROM drive from the expansion module, put the new
drive in and try to fit the faceplate, which I think so far, besides the MCE
drive, no 3rd party drive will have a matching or fitting faceplate. If that
doens't bother you and you think you can manipulate a few small screws, then
this might be the cheapest solution.

If you search in the G-Books list mail archive, you should be able to find a
few CDRW drives that are known to be compatible with the Pismo. You can also
check on XLR8YourMac.com for drive compatibility.

I wouldn't recommend getting a DVDRW drive. It will be pretty much useless
in a Pismo to burn any DVDs. Maybe data DVD, but certainly not video DVDs,
due to the lack of power muscle in a Pismo. Plus the cost of the drive might
be prohibitive. Might as well sell the Pismo and get a newer used PowerBook
with an Apple SuperDrive as it may be cheaper in the long run...

Re: Pismo questions

OK, next question, are there any replacement/upgrade drives so I can

Rad..

As per recent discussions about the Sony 830, there are LOTS of options for a
Combo CDRW/DVD and several for a DVD-RW.
Check out xlr8yourmac.com under their Drive Upgrades database.

Personally I've used several different brands of Combo in my Pismos and can
recommend them all: Sony, Matshita, LG, Teac. I've also used a few different
DVD-RWs too: Toshiba SD-R6472 which is currently the fastest DVD-R out there
(8x for both DVD-R and DVD+R, 4 x RW, 2.4x Dual Layer), as well as the
slot-loading Superdrives Apple uses in the G4 powerbooks: Panasonic Matshita
UJ-815 and UJ-825, the latter being faster at 4x vs. 2x.

I like the slot-loading option, as you could keep the drive if you upgrade to a
G4 with Combo in the future: just swap the drives and resell the Pismo with the
slot-loading Combo from the G4.

IIRC, the UJ-825 is on sale somewhere for about $130, which is a great deal.
Highly recommended.

Good luck.
Chris

Powerbook Firewire with loose audio-out connector

2004-12-02 Thread Danozano
Hi all,

My Powerbook Firewire has recently taken to dropping its audio-out signal
when the cord is moved.
I swapped out the cord and the fault seems to be with the jack.

Has anyone else had to crack their PB open to repair this problem? I plan
to reflow the solder on the connector and possibly add a jumper soldered
point-to-point to prevent the problem from recurring if the trace breaks
again, depending on what i see inside.

I've added an Airport card to this machine, and repaired other PC's in the
past, so I will probably be able to get in there without trouble, but that
will be the deepest I've ever gotten into this computer's innards.

Comments? Suggestions? Breakdown and rebuild manuals?

Dan

There is probably a loose connection on the AC-Sound board. When you remove
the top case, that part is easy to spot since that's where the AC connector
is. If you can't find the problem, it should be relatively easy to find
another board on eBay and replace it.

There are a few places on the net that have detailed instructions for the
disassembling. I'm sure someone will suggest a few...

ONLY 2.4 GHz wireless phones cause problems with WiFi (as do microwave

Sorry to be so late answering all your helpful posts, but I learned
the hard way the answer to my problem:

Two days ago there was a BIG fire in a warehouse about 2 miles from
my apartment. It was so big that burned the electrical and cable TV
wires that feed a large part of my area.
So I was without electrical power for about two hours, and without
cable and cable internet for about two days.
And guess what? My phone worked perfectly, without the strange
noises. Mind you, is a Panasonic 900 MHz, so there should not be any

So yes, there is interference between my NetGear base and my phone.

Andrew, Time, et al,

If the password space is left blank when the system is first set up, then
the password is in fact a blank space. All one has to do is hit reurn or
the OK button and that will move past the authorization process. This is
important also because if you do decide to reset the password using the
reset function on the install disks, the reset program will ask for the
original password, whereupon you would again enter the blank space ass the
password.

Re: Pismo questions

2004-12-02 Thread Mark Edward Attew
I put a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-811 which is a CDR/DVDR Superdrive into the DVD
caddy of my Pismo and installed Patchburn. Not only can I burn CDs and DVDs
with Toast, but with Patchburn 3, OS X identifies the drive as Vendor
Supported so even iDVD will work with it. Better yet, the drive's face works
the face from your old DVD drive with minor modification, so it doesn't even
look like you've changed anything.

OK, next question, are there any replacement/upgrade drives so I can
 get CDRW and maybe DVDRW?

 Rad..

As per recent discussions about the Sony 830, there are LOTS of options
for a Combo CDRW/DVD and several for a DVD-RW.
Check out xlr8yourmac.com under their Drive Upgrades database.

Personally I've used several different brands of Combo in my Pismos and
can recommend them all: Sony, Matshita, LG, Teac. I've also used a few
different DVD-RWs too: Toshiba SD-R6472 which is currently the fastest DVD-R
out there (8x for both DVD-R and DVD+R, 4 x RW, 2.4x Dual Layer), as well as
the slot-loading Superdrives Apple uses in the G4 powerbooks: Panasonic
Matshita UJ-815 and UJ-825, the latter being faster at 4x vs. 2x.

I like the slot-loading option, as you could keep the drive if you upgrade
to a G4 with Combo in the future: just swap the drives and resell the Pismo
with the slot-loading Combo from the G4.

IIRC, the UJ-825 is on sale somewhere for about $130, which is a great
deal. Highly recommended.

 Good luck.
 Chris

Wallstreet

2004-12-02 Thread Scott Birdwell
Hey, Listers!
I'm still struggling with my Wallstreet. It still will not charge
the battery. I've replaced the power card and the PMU, but still no
go. The battery is new, purchased off eBay. Any ideas as to where
to go from here? In an (supposedly) unrelated issue, when I boot up
(OS X.2.8), my screen is blacked out all the way to the log in page.
When I hit the brightness button above the keyboard, everything is
fine. Odd, but it's not like I can't work around it. However, if I
try to boot from the CD, the screen is also black, (I can almost make
everything out, but not quite), but the brightness button doesn't help.
in other words, I can't repair disks etc. reset logins, etc. from my
boot CD. Strange, yes? Anybody encounter this before? Another quirk
is that when I try to verify or repair permissions, it makes it only
about halfway through and then bogs down. Lastly, I bought a cable at
Microcenter this weekend out of the bargain bin. It is for Powerbooks
and has a HDI 30 fitting on one end and a SCSI DB M25 fitting on the
other end. My intent was to be able to hook my Wallstreet up to a
external CDRW or HD. Unfortunately this cable has the wrong end on it.
It has the end that plugs into the back of my Umax J-700, S-900, G3
MT, or PowerTower Pro. Is there a gender/bender fitting to convert
this so I can plug my SCSI CDRW into this cable? Thanks, as always, in
advance.

You said what kind of connector it had on the Wallstreet end but
I don't understand your description of the other end. It sounds like
it is a D25 type. What kind do you need on the other end? In other
words, do you need a HD50, C50, or some other flavor?

I have adapters for some (taking the D25 to HD50 for example) and
cables with the HDI30 on one end and the C50 on the other.

According to the Apple service manual, you should try (in this order):
* Resetting the power manager (fn-shift-power)
* Using the battery in the opposite expansion bay
* Replacing the charge card
* Replacing the PMU
* Replacing the power card
So, if you haven't done the first 3 steps, there's little point in
replacing the PMU or the DC board

In an (supposedly) unrelated issue, when I boot up (OS X.2.8), my
screen is blacked out all the way to the log in page. When I hit the

This is a known issue with the Wallstreet under Jaguar. To fix this
problem:
* Restart into MacOS 9
* Put the Wallstreet to sleep
* Wake it up again
* Restart into Jaguar

Every time the power is interrupted (i.e. you take the power cord out,
while no working battery is present), you will have to repeat the
procedure--even if the Wallstreet was turned off at the time you
removed the power cord.

Another quirk is that when I try to verify or repair permissions, it
makes it only about halfway through and then bogs down. Lastly, I

You may have purchased a SCSI disk mode cable, which will cause the
PowerBook to start up emulating a SCSI device. If you have, there's not
really anything you can do to get it to work other than buying a new
cable. They sell for about $5 on eBay. Look for an HDI-30 to Centronics
cable--most SCSI peripherals have a Centronics port on them, rather
than the DB25.

Cheers,
Ben

Another thought, The CD may be of an older version without the enabler for
your machine. Try an OS-9 CD if you have one available.

I was wondering the same thing, John. I don't remember if the OS 8.6
install CD was, or could be, machine specific or not. One of our
on-board techs will probably know for sure.[1] The problem could be
just that simple, although if the short whirand then squeak that
Kristina describes don't sound like a CD drive looking for a bootable
System to me.

At 2:24 PM -0500 12/2/04, Laurent Daudelin wrote:

But these indicate otherwise (good ol' Apple :-( )
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43119

[1] According to the last 2 URLs above (#43119/43120), the Lombard
does not require a specific OS enabler. So it doesn't look like it
requires a specific install CD.

Re: OS X first timer - blank password

2004-12-02 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Andrew, Time, et al,
If the password space is left blank when the system is first set up, then
the password is in fact a blank space. All one has to do is hit reurn or
the OK button and that will move past the authorization process. This is
important also because if you do decide to reset the password using the
reset function on the install disks, the reset program will ask for the
original password, whereupon you would again enter the blank space ass the
password.
Run
Hi Run,
Thanks, that's just about what I was thinking. But won't passwd in
the terminal do this just as well? Why would she need to boot from
the install CD (not that that's a problem)?

She's not having any problem launching software installed during the
original OS X install, so getting Terminal up ought not to be a
problem.

Peace,
Drew

Re: Wi-Fi, Pismo and Panasonic Cordless Phone

2004-12-02 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Sorry to be so late answering all your helpful posts, but I learned
the hard way the answer to my problem:

Two days ago there was a BIG fire in a warehouse about 2 miles from
my apartment. It was so big that burned the electrical and cable TV
wires that feed a large part of my area.
So I was without electrical power for about two hours, and without
cable and cable internet for about two days.
And guess what? My phone worked perfectly, without the strange
noises. Mind you, is a Panasonic 900 MHz, so there should not be any
interference, but there is. My previous phone, a different brand
900MHz never gave me problems.
So yes, there is interference between my NetGear base and my phone.
Live and learn.
:-)
Hi Hugo,
I've had lots of experience with this issue. The people who tell you
that 900MHz phones and 2.4GHz WiFi equipment don't interfere with
each other are mistaken or are really lucky (having never experienced
it first hand). Yes, they are different wavelengths, and they aren't
even harmonic, but a 900MHz phone's antenna absolutely CAN receive
2.4GHz signals (albeit with some signal loss). If your phone's base
station and your WiFi access point are co-located, this can cause
problems for your cordless phone.

I've got a 4-year old Sony 900MHz phone that works GREAT when the
phone's base station isn't near my wireless AP _and_ when my
handset's line-of-sight to the base station isn't the same
line-of-sight between the base station and wireless AP. When the
intersect, the phone glitches out and keeps trying to switch channels.

The problem gets worse the closer the two frequencies are to each
other (so 2.4GHz phones and WiFi) and when the frequencies share a
harmonic.

Peace,
Drew

Re: Aluminum and Alzheimer's

2004-12-02 Thread starfleet52
IF your worried go and sell the Aluminum Ibook and get one made out of
regular plastic and you will no longer about the very evil aluminum. But
aluminum was never linked to any disease and it is a myth about aluminum
that you are worried about.

Quote From Website

Most experts will tell you, however, that aluminum is not a cause of
Alzheimer's disease. You can safely continue using your antiperspirants,
drink the city water (aluminum is used in some water systems to remove
silt), wrap left-overs in aluminum foil, take antacids, and cook with your
aluminum pots and pans.

Re: Wi-Fi, Pismo and PhoneMate Cordless Phone

2004-12-02 Thread Rose Sailcat
I've got the same problem as the guy with the
Panasonic phone but I have a Pismo laptop, 400 Mhz
with a 256 MB and an internal Airport Card and a Casio
PhoneMate cordless (900 Mhz) and a DLink wireless
router (always in the next room hooked up to an IMac,
never near the phone). I think this horrible drilling
sound I get (or is it electroshock) is only during the
day, but it's frequent and totally annoying for all
concerned. I think it's only been happening since I
went wireless. I don't feel like giving any of it up?
Sometimes I pick up the speakerphone to avoid the
racket but all that takes a lot of energy (and too
much thought). Do I have to grin and bear it?

Do you know in which frequency your NetGear router
 operates? I think the
Apple Base Stations are in the 2.4GHz range. If you
 have one of the newest

 range, then you could have
interference. But if you have a Panasonic like yours
 that operates in the
900MHz range, I don't think it could create
 interferences since it's not in
the same range, but, hey, I'm certainly not a

Wallstreet

2004-12-02 Thread Scott Birdwell
Ken responded to my Wallstreet question:
My original inquiry:
Lastly, I bought a cable at
Microcenter this weekend out of the bargain bin. It is for Powerbooks
and has a HDI 30 fitting on one end and a SCSI DB M25 fitting on the
other end. My intent was to be able to hook my Wallstreet up to a
external CDRW or HD. Unfortunately this cable has the wrong end on
it.
It has the end that plugs into the back of my Umax J-700, S-900, G3
MT, or PowerTower Pro. Is there a gender/bender fitting to convert
this so I can plug my SCSI CDRW into this cable? Thanks, as always,
in
advance.

Scott Birdwell
--
Ken's response:
You said what kind of connector it had on the Wallstreet end but
I don't understand your description of the other end. It sounds like
it is a D25 type. What kind do you need on the other end? In other
words, do you need a HD50, C50, or some other flavor?
I have adapters for some (taking the D25 to HD50 for example) and
cables with the HDI30 on one end and the C50 on the other.
Ken
Ken, I don't know what the jargon for the connector is. I have a
couple of SCSI CDRW's that plug into the back of my Legacy Mac's Mac
Clones (and G3 MT). The cable for these devices have two different
connectors, one for the back of the computer (which has pins and screw
downs - apparently this is called a DB 25M fitting - perhaps this is
M is for male ???) and one for the back of the device (if you will,
a female which has spring clips to hold the connector in place). I
need to change the gender of my new cable to a female, if these
terms are applicable. Thanks, again.

If the password space is left blank when the system is first set up, then
the password is in fact a blank space. All one has to do is hit reurn or

important also because if you do decide to reset the password using the
reset function on the install disks, the reset program will ask for the
original password, whereupon you would again enter the blank space ass the
 password.

 Hi Run,

Thanks, that's just about what I was thinking. But won't passwd in
the terminal do this just as well? Why would she need to boot from
the install CD (not that that's a problem)?

Because if the empty space (or the single space) password is not accepted in
Terminal or other apps already installed, that's because they will ask for
it before they let you change it. When booting from the install CD, you can
go in the Apple menu when the installer is loaded and select the option to
change the Admin password, but you won't have to enter the existing one.
Very handy if you should ever forget it...

If the connector on the back of the devices is over two inches long
with two diamond shaped spring clips, then it is what is usually called
a C50, or Centronics 50. If the connector is about the same size as the
one on old Macs (or the d25 size) but has pinch release clamps to hold
it to the device, then it is an HD50.

OT: Deodorant Theory (formerly Aluminum and Alzheimer's)

2004-12-02 Thread Rad Craig

I thought it was only me! I can't believe I am sharing this, but maybe it
might help others, it's just not something commonly discussed. I have NEVER
worn deodorant and I'm 37. I have also never had stinky armpits either.
Now, I'm not a tree hugger, about as far as you can get from that, and I am
a very clean person. I have my own 'deodorant conspiracy theory'. I think
that using deodorant, rubbing those chemicals into your skin, pores and
glands, daily (thousands of times in a lifetime), acutally CAUSES the odor
to be worse than what would naturally occur.

Sure, everyone has a natural 'odor', for instance if you've ever smelled
someones head or hair right after vigorous exercise, but it's nothing like
the odor of a normal deodorant wearer who goes without it for a day or two
and does some exercise.

When I was growing up, all my buddies used it, it's just 'what you do' when
you go through adolescense, (like shaving, may not actually need to, but it
makes you feel older) and they all stank like hell, and I thought, when mine
start to smell, I'll start using it then...well, mine never started to smell
like that. Sure I get sweaty, but I don't reak, just the natural 'odor'
like your head/hair has...and you can't put deodorant on your head...well, I
guess you could. ;)

I have only told a couple of close friends about this, and my wife of
course, and have made sure I asked them if they have EVER smelled any odors
from me and they said 'of course not'...then I told them I had never worn
it.

I think using it, actually causes odor, or makes it much worse, so you keep
using it...a viscious cycle. Now, I don't think you can just stop using it,
if you have used it for 10+ years and expect not to smell...I have no idea
if that would eventually pass, or if some permanent change has already
happened to the glands/pores/whetever-dermis.

All I know is that it works for me probably because I have never used it. I
have a 10 year old son and have already told him my thoughts on it...of
course if he starts 'smelling', I will of course tell him to start using it.
He is athletic, as I was/is.

Anyway...just wanted to propose the idea. And I don't eat any garlic other
than whats normally in food.

Re: Almost Dead Wallstreet (update)

2004-12-02 Thread Katherine Zysk
I had the Wallstreet that had the disallowed symbol while starting in 10.2

I borrowed a ibook and moved my HD over. It still had the disallowed symbol
so I put a 9 start-up CD in, and after starting from that told the HD to
start from 9.

Put it back in the Wallstreet and it is running again in 9.
The CDRom is back but not reading all types of disks (can read the 9.2
update disk but not audio) It would not start the computer from the CDRom
while 10 was on the HD.

Batteries are still not charging even though I have a new dc card, and a new
charge card.

I put the battery in, it looks like it sees. It shows that the battery is
very low and sometimes flashing with a full red. But after a few minutes
the x comes over the battery symbol at the top of screen. And the control
strip tells me that the bay is empty.

I would like to get everything running again, any suggestions.

Thanks,
Kathiz

Why does the disallowed symbol come up.
 What does it mean?
 Not enough ram?
 Bad ram?

I'm sure that there are a number of causes for the disallowed
symbol. But the one I ran into when I installed OS 10.2 on my
Wallstreet was that I had an external hard drive connected to the PB
via a PCMCIA card. I kept getting the circle with the red slash
through it when trying to install OS X, until I ejected the PC card.

So, if you have **any** peripherals connected to your Wallstreet,
disconnect all of them and try the install again. I'm not saying this
*is* your problem, but it's worth a try.

 Good Luck,

 Bob

That tells me that the battery looks like at the end of its useful life...

Check with PowerBook Parts to see if they would sell you the cable
 only.

I found the cable by itself, but am unsure how to swap it with the torn
one. I'm guessing since its sold by itself, there is a way. Anyone
 have any tips/tutorials?

You have to remove the top case, since the trackpad is stuck to it. From
there, it's very easy to remove. There are 2 connectors, one on the
motherboard the other on the little board that controls the trackpad. The
hardest thing is removing the top case. You have to unscrew all the screws
underneath, remove the keyboard and, I'm not sure, maybe the screen as well.
Of course, you have to remove the 2 modules in each expansion bay, since
this is where there are levers to release the keyboard.

I thought I've seen step by step pictures on some web site that offer
PowerBook upgrades but can't remember which one. Anybody?
