Dodgy DVD Players

2004-12-03 Thread Tony Coult
From time to time people - me included -have asked for help with
non-functioning DVD players in Pismo Powerbooks. I thought mine had
died again (Matsushita replaced LG as recommended). I've just upped the
RAM from 192 to 640. Suddenly CDs mount, DVDs play again. Mind, I had a
scary morning as nothing happened at all after I'd put the RAM in first
time. After about five disassemblies/reassemblies it all sprang to life
again. Phew! So the moral seems to be - if your CD/DVD Player won't
work, try more RAM.

 lol.

There's a difference between a deodorant and an anti-perspirant.
Anit-perspirants tend to have aluminum...it's used to block the pores so
you don't sweat. Very healthy... not. This has actually been a
known issue for many years, Aaron. Nothing paranoid about it.

Deodorants tend to simply mask the odour. No aluminum required, though it
can be found in some brands. Also not that popular because - oh dear - you
can still detect that there's aliving, breathing, sweat-filled human
beneath that cloak of lavender.

To keep this relevant - use *neither* on you 'book.

Sorry to be so late answering all your helpful posts, but I learned
the hard way the answer to my problem:

Two days ago there was a BIG fire in a warehouse about 2 miles from
my apartment. It was so big that burned the electrical and cable TV
wires that feed a large part of my area.
So I was without electrical power for about two hours, and without
cable and cable internet for about two days.
And guess what? My phone worked perfectly, without the strange
noises. Mind you, is a Panasonic 900 MHz, so there should not be any
interference, but there is. My previous phone, a different brand
900MHz never gave me problems.
So yes, there is interference between my NetGear base and my phone.
Live and learn.
:-)

Easy fix go buy a WIFI Friendly 2.4 Ghz or a 5.8 Ghz phone.

It needs 8.6 or later

This is a genuine disc and not a copy isn't it ?

Another thought, The CD may be of an older version without the enabler for
your machine. Try an OS-9 CD if you have one available.

Enablers are long gone by 8.6, so far as I'm aware, I don't think I've had

Re: OT: Deodorant Theory (formerly Aluminum and Alzheimer's)

2004-12-03 Thread Daniel De L'eau
Truthfully, I was being sarcastic when I said I don't wear deodorant.
I don't use the kind with aluminum in it and there's no reason to
expound any more on any of that. I was just replying to what I
thought was an uneccessarily reactionary reply to my original post.

But, hey, whatever works for ya!

I thought it was only me! I can't believe I am sharing this, but maybe it
might help others, it's just not something commonly discussed. I have NEVER
worn deodorant and I'm 37. I have also never had stinky armpits either.
Now, I'm not a tree hugger, about as far as you can get from that, and I am
a very clean person. I have my own 'deodorant conspiracy theory'. I think
that using deodorant, rubbing those chemicals into your skin, pores and
glands, daily (thousands of times in a lifetime), acutally CAUSES the odor
to be worse than what would naturally occur.
Sure, everyone has a natural 'odor', for instance if you've ever smelled
someones head or hair right after vigorous exercise, but it's nothing like
the odor of a normal deodorant wearer who goes without it for a day or two
and does some exercise.
When I was growing up, all my buddies used it, it's just 'what you do' when
you go through adolescense, (like shaving, may not actually need to, but it
makes you feel older) and they all stank like hell, and I thought, when mine
start to smell, I'll start using it then...well, mine never started to smell
like that. Sure I get sweaty, but I don't reak, just the natural 'odor'
like your head/hair has...and you can't put deodorant on your head...well, I
guess you could. ;)
I have only told a couple of close friends about this, and my wife of
course, and have made sure I asked them if they have EVER smelled any odors
from me and they said 'of course not'...then I told them I had never worn
it.
I think using it, actually causes odor, or makes it much worse, so you keep
using it...a viscious cycle. Now, I don't think you can just stop using it,
if you have used it for 10+ years and expect not to smell...I have no idea
if that would eventually pass, or if some permanent change has already
happened to the glands/pores/whetever-dermis.
All I know is that it works for me probably because I have never used it. I
have a 10 year old son and have already told him my thoughts on it...of
course if he starts 'smelling', I will of course tell him to start using it.
He is athletic, as I was/is.
Anyway...just wanted to propose the idea. And I don't eat any garlic other
than whats normally in food.
Rad...

Boot off of the install disk and you can set/change the password.

Doesn't say much for the security of OS X...

If you want security, password protect the firmware on your Mac. This will
prevent anyone from booting off a CD and changing the password. One word of
advice, though. Make sure you don't forget the firmware password. It's 100%

Overall I think it's better you have that security hole than a bunch
of people loosing their data because they've forgotten / mis-entered
their password. Especially since OS X will boot up and log in a
user. That feature means a user may not need to use their password
often and thus they are more inclined to forget it.

Besides you can always take the disk and mount it on another system
and access it that way.

TiBook power supply question

2004-12-03 Thread John McGibney
My son broke the connector to his charger where it plugs into the PowerBook.
I found a replacement plug at Radio Shack (3/32 stereo plug). What I need to
know is the polarity of the 3 segments of the tip so I can solder it onto
the wire. I don't care about the status lights I just want to be able to
charge the battery and run the machine.

All of the 65watt chargers should be the same. I just don't have access to
one right now. Its a 550mhz TiBook.

TIA
John

Re: Aluminum and Alzheimer's

2004-12-03 Thread Mikael Byström

Quote From Website
You sure do give impressive references. The Web! Wow, then I guess it
must be true.
Most experts will tell you, however, that aluminum is not a cause of
Alzheimer's disease. You can safely continue using your antiperspirants,
drink the city water (aluminum is used in some water systems to remove
silt), wrap left-overs in aluminum foil, take antacids, and cook with your
aluminum pots and pans.

Most experts? If blanket statements like this doesn't ring a warning
bell then you better try and get a little bit wiser. Did they meet all
the experts themselves? Did they read all available output from most
experts. How do they define an expert in the field. If this is unclear,
this Website of yours is not credible and nor is the information. And
how would you know the status of the above?

I'd instead try and look for medical references within the subject on
Medline (Google for the best starting point) and armed with those go to a
biomedical library and look up the relevant articles. Or, if short on
time, read a website that actually quotes just what references they base
their arguments on.

As for the medical reality concerning aluminium I'm not updated on the
current status, but I think it's a valid concern worthy of attention.
I'm more concerned with radiation though as I don't think my TiBook was
designed for life on top of my chest and all radiation adds up (also
science is way behind the current situtation). But it's kinda nifty
sometimes when I have books to read. Maybe I should get a bigger better
Palm with pdf capability? Any tips?

Classic keeps losing WiFi Internet connection; OS X connection fine

2004-12-03 Thread Charles Meyerson
Graphite iBook SE, running latest version of Jaguar. When connected to
our home wireless network -- either an original AirPort or a Netgear
WGR614 -- OS X software works flawlessly with the WiFi signal and the
greater Internet beyond.

But Classic-based programs (including Outlook Express, IE and printing
functions) loses the WiFi connection unpredictably -- sometimes within
a few minutes of connection, sometimes much longer. Only way to
restore connection is to restart Classic or the whole computer
altogether. And then the connection may again disappear quickly.

Any suggestions for getting Classic to stay connected -- at least as
well as OS X?

Thanks.

Very strange, OS X provides the network access, Classic just uses the
connection through OS X. Are you running 9.2.2? Best I can think of

That reminds me of a joke, Rad.
Little old lady went to the doctor and said she had a problem. Doc says
What's your problem?
LOL says Well it's not a big problem but I would still like to fix it.
The problem is I can't stop passing wind
But as I said, it's not a big problem, because you can't hear it, and
you can't smell it

Doc thinks for a bit and then gives her some tablets. Take one of
these twice a day for two weeks then come back

Lady comes back two weeks later Doctor, I took the tablets, and they
made the problem worse. They still don't smell, but they sound really
loud now

Doc says Good, that's your ears fixed, now I'll give you some tablets
for your nose

..
Actually you could be right Rad - peoples body chemistries vary a lot.
Some people are naturally immune to tooth decay for instance.
