Re: Will PC133 sodimm work in a clamshell?
Yeah it should work, the clamshell will just slow it down to match its own bus speed. The interesting thing is that most on-line memory retailers will note that the memory they have for all Clamshells are rated at PC100 speed i.e. 100MHz, but the Clamshell's bus operates at 66MHz. So when you stick a PC100 memory stick in, the computer will run it at PC66 speed. It should do the same with a PC133 memory stick too. --- Ben [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello. OS X on Lombard
Hi All, For a few days now I have been trying in vain to install OS X (10.0.3 as well as 10.2) on my daughter's 400 MHz powerbook Lombard with 320 MB of RAM and a 6 Gig hard drive, that had been running OS 9 without a glitch essentially for as long as she had it (2 years). The first try, installing it over OS 9.2.2, didn't get me anywhere so I wiped the hard drive clean, partitioned it into a 5 G part for OS X and a 1 G for OS 9, installed the latter without any problem, tried several other OS X installs but never got any further than about 2 min before the predicted end ( generally, however, it crashed long before that) after which, invariable, I found myself with a crashed powerbook. In those cases, a check with Disk First Aid revealed that the OS X partition had been corrupted but after a repair, the same seems to happen again albeit that the hard disk seems to be corrupted in different places. If there is anyone out there who has had similar problems and was able to solve them: we are very eager to hear your suggestions! Thanks, Peter -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... hi, i remember reading that the lombard is picky about having more than 256mb ram to install os x. i can't remember if it prefers the 256 in the lower or upper slot. after the installation of os x, reinstalling the ram should work fine. hope this helps. rama. Re: OS X on Lombard
Ensure your RAM is working correctly -- try removing each of the DIMMs in turn, and installing. OS X is much more picky about its RAM than OS 9. Apart from that, try resetting PRAM (Cmd-Opt-P-R at startup, hold until you hear 3 startup chimes), resetting the PMU (instructions will be in the manual, not familiar with the Lombard procedure), or doing a low-level format on the hard drive and testing it for bad sectors. Re: PC and Mac on the same wireless network is simplicity
I would reccommend getting a Belkin card for the PC...I am running Airport base (graphite) on a Verizon dsl modem. The systems are an iMac se 400, a Pismo, a Dell desktop and a Gateway desktop. Just added the Gateway a few weeks ago...had a new Netgear card in the Gway that just wouldn't work...exchanged it for a Belkin card and it took right off and the whole thing works great...No dropped signals etc.Running XP on the PC's and 10.3.7 on the Macs. Now I need to figure out if I can hook up an HP all-in-one printer/scanner/fax to work wirelessly. Regards, Mike K [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: you should have no issue at all Brian. Thanks! I got the iBook yesterday, and I love it! I'm sure my wife will too. She's always asking why the Wallstreet takes so long to load web pages. Ha! I've got 512MB of memory in that sucker, but the ol' processor just can't hack it. Anyway, I believe the type of migration you're referring to is an upgrade on the same machine, right? Otherwise, there's got to be some way to export the data from the Powerbook to the iBook first? I found some scripts written by a gentleman name Paul Berkowitz that will perform this export/import for $20. I guess I'll just have to buck up and pay the piper, eh? This stinks because it's so easy with MS Outlook/Winders. But this Mac stuff is a much different animal. I even know a little UNIX (Solaris), but that still doesn't help me since OS 9.2 is not based on UNIX. I don't know what files in OS 9.2 contain the data I need to export. I'm stumped. Thanks again, Mike I'm in the process of migrating from Office v.X to 2004 and I believe that Entourage gives you the option to import data from a number of applications, including previous versions of Entourage. That said, I use Apple's Mail client as well and think they're both good tools. I need to use Entourage for integration with an Exchange server at work, and it's been great for that. Connect to the mail server and wala, all my emails, folders, etc. Works great for on-the-road if you don't have your computer with you and have to borrow one. I do it this way so I can see the exact same emails from home or work...since I do a lot of customer correspondence from home. Now, if your work server doesn't support IMAP, then it won't help you. Is my Wall Street's connection problem fixable?
Every time I visit my mother I have a hell of a time connecting to my ISP from her house (which was built in 1991)...while her 1997-era Compaq laptop has no problem (connecting to AOL). It takes about 10 tries to get a connection. Otherwise it fails at Starting PPP) using OS 9.1 and Remote Access. I have no problems anywhere else, even at my brother's in the same town, dialling into the same access numbers. Is there a known problem with the Wall Street modems? Re: Will PC133 sodimm work in a clamshell?
Hello. I know the Clamshell ibook specs say pc100 so-dimm ram, but will pc133 so-dimm ram work? TIA, ~Ben~ Faster RAM is not really faster. Step by step: {oversimplified, but...} a) The CPU needs to go read the data at a given address. Say 101010100 in binary. b) It sets those bits up on the address bus. c) Various logic [NAND/NOR gates] hardware pieces decode that enable that particular location in memory. That makes its data available on the data bus. d) The CPU then READS the databus. The rub is, none of this instantaneous. There is a set-up time spec'ed by the memory mfgr that says [roughly...] X nanoseconds after c) happens, the data as seen in d) shall be valid. Obviously, if it's [say] 100 ns, and you wait 130, or 160, it's STILL good. But if you read the data bus at 90ns, you are risking grief... The speed rating of RAM is actually from the inverse of that time. Why use that? Well, advertising [What do you mean, 60ns RAM costs MORE than 100???] beats engineering... So yes, you can use faster RAM than called for; all other things being equal. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I have no problems anywhere else, even at my brother's in the same town, dialling into the same access numbers. Is there a known problem with the Wall Street modems? I did the firmware upgrade that became available in late 1998. I've tried other modem scripts but since I have no connection problems elsewhere, I figure it's either the modem or the large number of phones at Mom's (I've unplugged several of them, but that doesn't help and, anyway, why doesn't SHE have problems with her older laptop?) Might be something simple like a noisy line? Maybe the modems that AOL uses in their local exchange there are a brand that's a little more tolerant of noisy lines? Where her ISP is probably using older modems, like the kind when 56k first came out, they were very picky with this. It's a cheap thing to try at least. Go to Radio Shack and get an 'in-line filter choke' (I'm assuming they still have them). You will wrap your phone line around these u-shaped (together they make a circle), magnet-looking things, several times. It will improve the speed by cutting down on noise at the very least, but might also solve your problem. Some phone line noise can't be heard by us, but can be heard by the modem. I've seen these things work personally. When i used to use dial-up (used to own an ISP 10 years ago), I'd never use a modem without one. Install it on the end of your phone line where it plugs into the modem, as close as possible to that port. Back then, those were my only choice, but I just googled and this looks like the thing to get: http://www.ky-filters.com/filters.htm Not to expensive to try, it definitely won't HURT anything, can only make it better. I'd get two, one for home, one to travel with. I didn't look for any others that might be cheaper, just wanted to give you a place to look in the right direction. HTH. I reboot, get promted to insert disk 2 and it gets almost done, to about 9 minutes remaining, then says something like 'errors were encountered during installation' and the button changes to 'quit'. I have done this twice now, with two different Disk #2's and got the same error both times. After the first install, I was doing the software update, which was quite a list, and it hosed up on the last item in the list, which is all the 10.3 updates for OSX (like 97MB). Then it would no longer connect to the internet via ethernet. I restarted twice, repaired disk permissions, but that didn't fix anything. I mounted the disk 2 and ran the install.pkg manually and it finished without problems, but still acted flaky. I tried to reboot on a recovery CD I have, but when I selected it in 'startup disk' and clicked reboot, it would just sit there and never reboot. So I closed startup disk and restarted it via the apple menu, held the 'c' key down during boot, and it ignored it and booted to the HD like normal. So after all these strange things, I decided I'd try it all again, used a different disk 2 cd, but got the same results. This is a Pismo, 400mhz, 11.2G HD, 192MB. Any suggestions? Apple Mail
Well if you like Entourage so much then go Wintel. I think Mail is a great program, it needs to grow some and will have too as Apple is starting to sail under it's own power. Plus in case you have not heard, Microsoft is not updating Internet Explorer for the Mac and if you think this is the last of M$$ products to jump the ship, think again. The boyz in Wa. are getting a little testy. Apple has a whole new generation to sell products too, iPod and iTunes has been a great intro to allow growth, to what ends that remains to be seen. All it takes is a few stumbles by the pigs and the little guy could now be a real threat. So if you are in a position of controlling over a 100 Macs, which I honestly respect, get Apple on the phone, tell them the problems, maybe they have a solution you have not thought of. Your a player, they are at least going to listen or read your typed mail asking for an answer, probably even better approach. As long as there are Tech people like you, who will not take Apple to the mat and demand the functionality you need to work in this, *Windows World* and just push aside Apple Mail or other Apple products, what are you doing ? Your just helping to cut the product share even more, when you have not even asked Apple about your problems. There might be solutions to what you need. Your also telling 100 plus workers using Macs, Apple Mail is a failure. What does that say to your Mac users when it comes time to buy a computer and most people use them off work for, emailing and surfing. Well the tech guy at our company does not like Apple Mail says it does not do things right, Internet Explorer is not being updated, so guess we better get a Wintel. When these 100 workers are asked by their friends, what computer they should buy, the workers are now the computer experts, their now the Tech guy, so from your influence against Mail it just blasts loud and clear Apple Mail is inferior, buy Wintel and it grows like a virus. You have some juice use it. 100 computers will not get you a free ride on Steves Gulfstream, but they will listen. That's the beauty of the Mac the software meshes with the hardware and no matter if there big or small. You plop a wad of M$$ and it just puts FOD in your engine. Job security I guess Geof Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day.
