If you don't use the other languages all they do is take up space on
your HD.
There is a program to remove these extraneous languages, called
Delocalizer. It can remove all the unnecessary files from all over the
system with just a couple of clicks.

card-Slot. It is recognized in the System Profiler, however. I have
installed OS 9.1, 9.2.2, the USB-Card-Support 1.4.1 - to no avail.
Unfortunately, installing OS X is not an option, as my processor
upgrade refuses to work with it (the processor is not the culprit,
however, as the problem with the USB-card persists when using the old
(very sloow) processor).

I have no idea if this is related or not, but my OrangeLink Firewire
CadBus Card does not work, too (though it should as well). It is not
even recognized in the System Profiler.

Seems almost everyone, including me, gets caught by this. Symptoms - The
WallStreet works fine with a USB card whilst on mains power but freezes
up under battery power.

The solution is to turn off Allow processor cycling under Settings for
Battery, in Control Panels, Energy Saver, Advanced Settings. Now the USB
card should work fine. At least it did for me.

backlighting turned off suddenly in PB G4 / 550

2005-01-11 Thread Mikael Byström

I have a Powerbook G4 / 550 here that ocassionally suddenly turns off the
backlight after just a short time of use. Typically when I read the
display for just under a minute and then press the space bar. I can see
the makeouts of the picture, but the backlight is off. Turning the
controls doesnt help. Setting the machine to sleep do help, but it's very
irritating to have to set the machine to sleep all the time while working.

Last time this problem occured a Open Firmware reset-all seemed to fix it
for a while at least. But I need to know what brings forward this problem
in this model as I'm not the only one using it. Could it be some kind of
hardware problem? Any suggestions for testing the hardware?

Re: PB G4/400 freezes suddenly. Heat? (wasRe: LaCie drive forcesleeps TiBook 400)

2005-01-11 Thread Mikael Byström
Noone have any insights on this type of problem with a Powerbook G4
suddenly start to freeze after using a firewire disc? (See both earlier
posts further down for details)

If not, anyone care to say anything on strategy for measurement of
temperature and other useful data? I've fixed simpler problems with the
PB G4, more complicated problems in the wallstreets and Pismos, but this
kind of freeze problem in a PB G4 is new to me.

Mikael Byström said:

It just got Worse!

Three times since this drive encounter my whole machine have frozen 4+
times. It just freeze and there is nothing you can do except the three
finger salute. There is no log of anything in the OS, indicating hardware
failure. I did a Open Firmware set defaults, reset nvram reset all.
This didn't improve anything.

Then I popped up the keyboard and discovered that the connection cable
from the PCMCIA slot had been disconnected from the motherboard. I
reinserted it hoping this would solve matters.

I think it froze four times since, one of them booting into single mode
and stopped just after the first 20 lines.

All of this because I pop in a firewire drive during sleep? Or did it
just cause already broken things to surface? The new thing with the drive
was that it was the first firewire unit I have used that needed bus
power. Maybe this put some toll on the motherboard or something?

Hmm, one thing I seem to notice is that my fan isn't running as far as I
can tell. Maybe it stopped? How do one force start the fan? Will the
Apple hardware test CD, that came with the machine, test the fan? If it
doesn't, then maybe this is a heat problem? Any ideas on how to verify
the fan operation or other ideas to solve this problem?

I tried Temperature Monitor, but unfortunately only the HD SMART
controller is supported on my Powerbook G4 400 and I noticed that when
crashes occur the temp is 43° C/109.2°F after rebooting. The first
troublefree time it's at 39°C to 42°C.

Mikael Byström said earlier:

Anyone know what this can be about?
I sleep my TiBook 4oo with powercord in, insert a cordpowered
firewiredrive and the machine refuses to wake up. It's not off, but HD
seems to not spin up, just kinda sims about and display is dark.
Three finger salute with drive disconnected, machine boots up and just
before logging in I sleep it again, inserts the drive, it wakes up and I
login and copy my files, eject the drive, sleeps it again, remove the
drive and now the machine plays dead again. Another forced restart and
everything is normal.

Now, what conclusions are the to make here? I couldn't find much in the
system log.

Yeah, this has been bugging me as well on my 17. I found out a cleaner
called Omnicleanz, which apparently act on the molecular level, doesn't
contain any alcohol, ammonia, detergent, acetone and other harmful stuff.
They recommend using it on the screen, the case, the keyboard. They say it
is nonconductive so it doesn't matter if it reaches circuits. So, what I'm
now doing, since I'm not sure about what's underneath the grille (I know
that the speakers are there), is to vaporize a larger than usual amount of
cleaner directly on the grille. I then wipe it out with their special
clothe. It doesn't do a perfect job but it helps dissolve those particles
lodged in the grille. No ill effect after over a month of use...

Blue Screen of Death n.: [common] This term is closely related to the older
Black Screen of Death but much more common (many non-hackers have picked it
up). Due to the extreme fragility and bugginess of Microsoft Windows,
misbehaving applications can readily crash the OS (and the OS sometimes
crashes itself spontaneously). The Blue Screen of Death, sometimes decorated
with hex error codes, is what you get when this happens. (Commonly
abbreviated BSOD.)

Running as root is dangerous to start with, and under OS X introduces

You do NOT need to enable the root user, ever; if you need a root

Apple has designed OS X with the idea in mind that root is NOT ALLOWED
to log in. Don't second-guess them in this.

through away my mail preference that did the trick
OK, I did not try throwing away the mail preferences, can some one give

Lombard-Tech time troubles

2005-01-11 Thread Kristina Rost
Greetings list,

I thank all the many who emailed me on list and off with suggestions and
good deals. My progress report on getting my Lombard to run like my Kenmore
washing machine is...well still in progress.

I did upgrade to 9.1 from apple's website, I had to do the download at night
as I have dial up. I hope to have dsl soon as my dh will be working from the
house a couple days a week starting in June, tho his commute will lengthen
when he has to go to corporate, but who wants to live in Illinois?

Any way I tried to download to 9.2... 3 nights in a row...but it errors
while we are sleeping. So I am going to try the 9.1 for a while.

I downloaded Netscape 7.02 per advice for the paypal/ebay thing and have to
install it today. I had to take the kids skiing yesterday, before it got too
warm then violin lessons in the evening. Today is piano lessons and makeup
violin lessons. Life gets in the way alot!

Do I need to uninstall IE...for simplicity sake? My lombard has a floppy
drive in the bag but here again is a tech learning curve...I would use my
spring cleaning program to uninstall IE but I have never liked Spring
Cleaning, as somehow something always goes awry after its use. Is there a
better way to uninstall or clean a program off a hd?

THEN, we purchased a Canon i8000 color printer (pixma? the box is
downstairs) and of course it doesn't accept the memory card of my new
digital directly, so as far as I can see I either have to connect to my pb
or get some kind of adapter for direct printing. I decided to not get a
larger format printer, for scrapbooking, as I really haven't done pages
digitally anyway and I prefer more immediate art materials like pens, chalks
etc. Also it was cheaper...more money for music lessons. It has six inks to
be replaced individually.

I have one question does my Lombard CD/DVD write CD's...if I use my Toast
progam? Or is it a read only CD? Also what DVD movie program should I use?
Freeware? Shareware? MacMall? Ultimately my desire is to record
music/slides/pictures on to a DVD for family archival purposes.

As of now, I haven't been able to or had time to finger out any of these
to a soothing workable endand I want world peace.

Kristina
³In order to seek one¹s own direction, one must simplify
the mechanics of ordinary, everyday life.² -Plato

PS. We bought the Canon at Best Buy who asked for donations to the Red Cross
Tsunami relief as BB is matching funds, and Bush is allowing any donations
(given anywhere i suppose, til the end of Jan) to report on the 2004-1040.
It was an easy way to help those folks.

Some announcer on a radio here near Chicago said it was the greatest
disaster in recorded history...humpf he must have forgotten Noah, when
only 8 survived in the whole world and only 2 of every KIND of animal;
besides the Bible, the Great Flood is recorded in other culture's histories,
Gilgamesh is oneI have read and Noah was visited and quoted on the tablets.

Re: USB PC Card on Wallstreet

2005-01-11 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Many thanks to James, Bob and the others who answered my request.
Having set the processor to save power when on battery exactly was
the culprit! Now the card works fine. Such a simple solution to a
problem which nearly drove me crazy Š

Many thanks again!

means that what you *probably* have here is a small spray bottle of
de-ionized water, the stuff we got from the DI tap in the lab.

The only thing that throws me is the lowered freezing/elevated boiling
points.

My boss (a PhD chemist) and I (a analytic chemist for 10 years) can't
think of what would raise the boiling point of an aqueous solution to
103 degrees. Lots of things depress the freezing point, but nothing we
can think of raises it.

The 'good stuff', the water that had gone through reverse osmosis,
followed by multi-stage carbon and DI cartridges is 10 Megohm/cm.
That's what we used when we needed pure water for experiments, the 1.5
megohm stuff was for rinsing glassware.

You can get even purer, but the water has to be completely purged of
all air, and the RO/DI/Distillation process has to take place in a pure
nitrogen atmosphere, otherwise it picks up CO2 from the atmosphere,
which makes the water weakly acidic and weakly conductive.

It's a giant pain to work with, and 10 megohm water is generally good
enough.

All in all, it *is* a good thing to wash electronics with, after all
it's what they now use to clean circuit boards during manufacturing,
and the DI taps down in the labs are just the thing for flushing out
Coke-taminated keyboards. It's also what Apple recommends for cleaning
LCD screens, lint free soft cloth dampened with water.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60446

I'd still be wary of spraying it on live electronics, because you could
dissolve stuff that would make it conductive; it doesn't take much.

This isn't to denigrate this printer which I've heard other good

New iBook!!!

2005-01-11 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi all,
Thanks for all your guidance re. choosing a new Apple laptop... :)
I had more or less chosen to try to scrape together what it would
cost me to get a brand new iBook, because the chances I would be
taking by getting a used one, just seemed too scary. I wouldn't save
all that much either if I wanted one that was fairly new...

But then I suddenly stumbled upon one bought in November... It is a
G4, 1.2Ghz, 12, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, Bluetooth, International
AppleCare until 2007 etc... It was practically new. A young boy had
got it while he was studying in HongKong this fall. He had thought he
would get that as an in-between while waiting for a newer model
PowerBook. But after getting it, he changed his mind. So he had more
or less just tried it. Not only that, I discovered that he lives in
my home town!!! And the price was lower than many of the older ones I
had considered...

I was trying to check out a few things before deciding. Then I got a
mail yesterday that he would be going to France tomorrow. So in a
real hurry I managed to get hold of the guy that has been choosing
which PB's I have gone for in the past, to ask for some specific
advice. I told him about the only drawback with it, that it has an
International keyboard, not a Norwegian one. He said he wouldn't have
been in doubt with that price at all, and the keyboard could be
changed easily. So that is what I need to do now. There wouldn't
happen to be any Norwegians here who knows where I could get one?

First I will have to figure out how I can change the key definitions,
so that I can get our 3 special characters. But I see that there are
several other things that are different, e.g. characters like : ; @
* are placed differently. So I really don't know where to begin,
it is just not all that easy to change that way. So I will really
have to get a new keyboard, just changing the definition of the
keyboard isn't enough. I bet that even if I do type touch, I would
suddenly doubt something and look around not knowing where to find it
without having to try and try (Murphy's Law?)...

So now I am sending mails to a few Apple dealers, to ask what it will
cost. I am hoping that it might be possible to get hold of one pulled
from a dead iBook. I am wondering if it might be an idea to give
Apple a call and ask them nicely? Worth a try... I really don't need
a brand new one...

Since he was going abroad already tomorrow, I just had to decide
quickly, and before any of the others that were interested, got to
it. I got some time off from work today and went off and got it. I am
so happy It looks as new as it possibly can. The power adapter
hasn't even been used... I got all documentation and he is writing
AppleCare to get them to register it over to my name. So could things
be any better? I don't think so... :)

To top it off, he had transferred a huge collection of music to it
which I got to keep... :)

Shoot, now I just haaave to get an Airport Express Base, so I can get
wireless and connect it to the stereo too I guess I am on my way
to eBay to start checking :) There was something about different
types of these though. One could be connected to the stereo for sound
through that, one couldn't. One was round, the other square. Can any
of you explain the difference and maybe give me the correct name for
the one I want? I think it is the square one, which can be connected
to a stereo...

Thanks a lot again, I really think I have been real lucky!!!
Oh... A few questions... Do any of you know if people use car wax or
something like that on the back of the screen to protect it from
scratches? Just a thought... It might be an idea, it is so pretty and
shiny and I would like to keep it that way... I know it works on
white plastic garden furniture, so...

Anybody know about some place where you can find nice (not too
expensive) neoprene skins for these? I looked around on Norwegian
websites a while ago, but didn't find anything. What are they called
again?

Do any of you have the thingie (don't know what it is called) that
you can use so you can connect your Apple to the TV, to use the TV as
an extra screen. Since I now have a small screen, I was thinking that
this might be something to consider. My TV is a few months old, a
Thomson 100 Mhz, 32 (not flat screen though) 16/9 format. Do you
think such a TV would give a picture that is good enough?

Re. the airport base and the thingie... Do you know if these have a
power adapter and if it works for something like 110V-240V (so it
works for travelling)? The reason why I am asking is that here we
have 240V, so normally that would exclude buying from the US. But if
the adapter is meant to work for travelling, or easily can be
replaced, it could be an idea to look on eBay.com

I know there was something else I needed to ask you, but now I can't
remember... Oh well, as soon as I hit the send button, it'll be
there...

I guess

2005-01-11 Thread John . E . Abraham
Hi Nils
There is a known extensions problem with OS 9.2.2 you will have to use an
earlier set of extensions.
Go to: http://www.macintouch.com/mos9usb.html and read the info on that
page

Then go to : http://eshop.macsales.com/tech/ftp/usb/usbextensions.sit
then download these
and in stall and you will find they will work.

I use a Belkin USB 2 card in the same model that you have. I have
upgraded it with 512 Mb ram,
40 Gb HD and installed OS 10 and it works ok plus no messing about with
extensions with this card.

To cover myself I loaded the new extensions on to a floppy then in to a
folder on the desktop.
I Then copied the old extensions in to a new folder on the floppy. I
then had a copy of both
sets of extensions on a floppy just in case of problems. I suggest you
do the same in case of mistakes.

I then copied the new ones in to the extensions folder rebooted and
haypresto the problem was solved.

Subject: USB PC Card on Wallstreet
Hi listers,
I am desperately trying to get a Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Notebook
Card running with by Wallstreet (2nd revision, 233 MHz, upgraded to
466 MHz, 256 MB RAM). The Belkin-Card is supposed to run with OS 8.6
to X, but my PB always freezes in short time when I put it in the PC
Any suggestions are highly appreciated.
Nils

Safari still hangs on secure servers. . .

2005-01-11 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello All,
I recently posted a thread regarding Safari's problem to go to https
sites. It hangs for as long as a minute, then once the secure server
has locked, the site takes so long to load that by the time I finally
get into a secure server, the website times out. I have decided to not
use Safari anymore for secure sites until this bug is fixed, as with
Netscape, Explorer and even FireFox all work perfectly with https
sites. I even re-installed Java to see if that was a problem, but to
no avail. Anyone else having similar problems?

SuperDisk floppy drive for G3 PowerBook

Has anyone ever used an internal floppy drive (VST SuperDisk floppy

if there are any issues when using the internal drive , especially

any experience with HP Photosmart 2610 networked inkjet?

2005-01-11 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Hello all
I'm looking for a new network printer since my wife's PC laptop won't
work with the Powerprint print server.
I need a network printer that will work with her XP laptop and my
Lombard through the Linksys wireless router.
Since I'm a glutton for punishment I'm looking at an all-in-one
printer/scanner/fax so i can replace three simple machines with one
complicated one...
Anyway I've found a HP printer that seems like it might work:
HP Photosmart PSC 2610 http://tinyurl.com/4dnfz or
http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/home/store_access.jsp?BV_SessionID=0848460537.1105494570BV_EngineID=ccckadddihglgdkcfngcfkmdflldfgg.0product_code=Q5542A%23ABAtemplate_type=product_detail
But I'm not sure it will work with my Lombard 400 (OS9.2.2).
HP claims to support OS9.2.2 but they want you to sent $10 for a CD
which doesn't seem like an auspicious start.
Is anyone using one of these with a Mac?
The review sites mention problems on the Windows side but no mention of
Mac problems. I'm not sure I'm reassured by this.

Hello All,
I recently posted a thread regarding Safari's problem to go to https
sites. It hangs for as long as a minute, then once the secure
server
has locked, the site takes so long to load that by the time I
finally
get into a secure server, the website times out.
What sites?
I just connected to our own secure server, my bank's secure server,
Discover card's server and had no problems whatsoever.
Whatever this is, this isn't a general https:// problem with Safari.
Does this occur with other users on your system? (Always good to
create a test user for just these issues.

Hmmm, I think I'll create a test user and see if it's the same. .
.didn't think of that. But as far as the sites go, it doesn't matter.
If it's https, it hangs. Thanks for the info I'm gonna see if it does
it with a different user account.
I haven't experienced it with any secured websites I regularly access.
So,
I'm not sure that this would officially qualify as a bug. There
might be
something with your settings. Trying a test user is a good idea...

Ok, did the test user idea. . .same thing. I'm wondering if there's
something up with my installed version of Safari itself. I'm gonna try
downloading it and re-installing it altogether. Thanks for the help
folks,

Re: any experience with HP Photosmart 2610 networked inkjet?

2005-01-11 Thread Kyle Hansen
On 1/11/05 6:05 PM, Andrew in Ann Arbor [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into
the Cybertrough:

 Hello all
I'm looking for a new network printer since my wife's PC laptop won't
work with the Powerprint print server.
I need a network printer that will work with her XP laptop and my
Lombard through the Linksys wireless router.

I use a HP 6840. It is $199 ($169 with Rebate) and has both an Ethernet
10/100 port as well as wireless and USB connections.
I would not trade this printer for the world. I print from my Mac's both
wired and wireless, my Sager laptop and my AMD desktop both running windows
XP. This thing never fails...I love it.

...memory questions...

2005-01-11 Thread Jim Scolman
Hello, I have checked the specs for the G4 Powerbooks and can not tell
if there is one or two RAM slots in the machine. Is 256 MB soldered
on the system board? There is a wide range of prices for RAM chips
for the Powerbook, if they all match the same spec, what is to be
gained by buying the more expensive module over the lesser expensive?
Thanks, Jim.
