ADB Hot-Swapping on Wallstreet -- reference

2005-01-16 Thread Bob
Ken ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and I were discussing last week whether
ADB peripherals on a Wallstreet PB could be safely hot-swappable. At
that time I didn't have any clear-cut references to support my
position. I since have run across the following unequivocal notation.
I'm offering it so that those that are interested will note that this
wasn't just a WAG or merely my opinion (neither of which is worth a
whole lot :-)).

http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=05941
Apple's PowerBook G3 Series - one of the last machines to ship with
ADB ports - enabled hot-swapping of ADB devices, as noted in the
developer documentation linked below.

Installing OS X on Lombard

2005-01-16 Thread Dijkwel
Rumors go that one should be able to install OS X on a Lombard (400
Mhz). However, in spite of numerous tries with different configurations
of RAM ( from 64 to 384), no success yet. During installation the book
invariable freezes and it does so irrespective of whether I try to
install 10.0, 10.2 or 10.3.

I've heard X is quite picky about it's RAM: does that mean all three
sticks I have are corrupted?

Any suggestions more than welcome, thanks,
Peter

Procedure For Unplugging (Was: Dead Pismo)

2005-01-16 Thread Bob
If I can isolate a salient point perhaps hidden in this excerpt. I
really don't want to hijack the thread, but this is a issue that very
few G3 PowerBook owners seem to know. I was told when I first
purchased my Wallstreet (was it in the owner's manual??) to always
unplug the power cord from the PB first, then unplug the AC adapter
from the wall.

I don't know when, or if, this has changed concerning the subsequent
PowerBooks. Maybe Kyle can pitch in and let us know.

Re: To iBook or AlBook, that is the question

2005-01-16 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Ben Dyer [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The GPU may not seem like it's too important, but under Tiger,
none of the iBooks (nor the Mac mini, for that matter) will
support CoreImage.
Very valid point!
So this includes the 12 PB G4 1GHz ???
---
The DVI out is another big thing -- if you want to upgrade the LCD (or if
the current one has a DVI connecter), it's much better to go DVI-DVI (or
even DVI-VGA) than VGA-DVI.
Yes, I had thought of this.
---
Also, PowerBooks can (officially) take more RAM (up to 1.25GB
No, the same:

http://www.apple-history.com/frames/body.php?page=gallerymodel=pg4_12_dvi
---
An extra 10GB hard drive space is not huge either way, but you'll probably
hit the limits of the 30GB drive reasonably soon, so at least the 40GB
gives you more time to upgrade.
Not for me as the PowerBook/iBook won't house any file storage,
I will have my server for that. The *Book will act a bit more like an NC.
Everyone remember those ???
---
Finally, the PB is just a much more attractive computer. The iBooks scratch
and stain quite easily, whereas the PB maintains its pretty aluminium sheen
through almost any punishment.
Also, I can paint the AlBook with automotive paint!!!
Just gotta decide on a design, taking inspiration from
some NHL goalie helmets! :o)

The whole point here is that I am comparing a new iBook 12

Shared printers

2005-01-16 Thread mlh/home
So, on my network is a PC running Windows XP, a G4 iBook and a G3 iMac
(both running OSX 10.3.7 or whatever the latest version is).

The XP PC has a printer attached to it (a Canon i470D). I have told XP
to share the printer. How do I go about telling the Ibook to use this
printer (if it can at all)?

My intial thoughts were to d/load the OSX drivers for the printer,
install them on the iBook, connect to the Printer share see what
happens. Is this the best way to go?

several people had their screens replaced. Check it out on

Re: Dead Pismo

2005-01-16 Thread CHARLES RICHARDS
Good morning all. I used the old paperclip method and opened the CD
drive and inserted the Restore CD and hit the power key and the system
booted up to OS9. The battery shows one light and so I tried to boot up
from the internal HD which has OS 10.3.6 . I get the big apple no
spinning wheel and it just hangs with the big apple showing.
I get the usual start up sound as well.
After waiting 5min or so, I give up and press the power
key+apple+control to restart holding down the C key to start again
from the Restore CD and it will do this. How frustrating. Any
suggestions any one?

The other thing to consider would be the PMU. I'm thinking about all
the components that have to do with power management. The PMU and/or
the Sound Card are the most likely culprits of your problem. I'm not
so sure that the logic board would be at fault. That's not to say
that it couldn't be but...
As for the PMU, it is separate from the mb. Follow this link to see a
picture of it:
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Power___Charger_PMU_Battery_Board_Pismo-
p-16137.html
It is on slide 22 at the 'take apart' link I sent you yesterday.

There is this from xlr8yourmac.com about the PMU reset:
...Most often it is due to a dead cell in the backup battery, or just
a corrupted PMU. The problem is that you can't reset the PMU correctly
from a dead backup battery. You can zap the PMU, which will get the
backup battery charging again. Then reset it in a few hours when the
battery has some charge. The steps are below.
If this doesn't correct it, then they most likely have a bad (not just
dead, but bad cell) battery that is corrupting the PMU on its own. The
first suggested fix is an accurate set of PMU resets as follows.

 RESETTING THE PMU
A corrupted PMU (Power Management Unit) board can cause many
sleep/startup issues.
The PMU is the Power Management Unity of the system. When the
batteries are completely drained, draining too fast, or a battery with
a bad cell exists, or if the AC adapter is unplugged from the wall,
but left connected to the PowerBook, the PMU can become corrupted
If the internal motherboard backup battery has become completely
drained, then a 2nd PMU reset will be needed about 4 hours after the
1st PMU reset and the system has been plugged in for at least an hour
(once the motherboard battery has enough power to reset the PMU
properly). The first reset (due to a dead MB battery) wipes the PMU.
The second reset (using the charged MB battery) rewrites the PMU with
long-term firmware.
Before resetting the PMU, check all connections. If possible. Put the
system to sleep and insert a known good battery, then test.
 Reset the PMU as follows:
Unplug the AC from the PowerBook.
 Eject the battery(s).
Depress the PowerBook reset switch ONE TIME (in the back by the
modem, marked by a white triangle).
 Wait 10 seconds.
 Replug the AC.
 Reinsert the Battery.
 Restart the system.
After the system has had about 4 hours of plugged in time, repeat
the PMU reset as outlined above. This will rewrite the correct PMU
code using the trickle from the motherboard battery's charge to do the
writing.
If the system still does not charge/drain/startup correctly. You can
try a hard motherboard reset. Follow the same instructions above, but
after #2, lift the keyboard and unplug the motherboard battery (lower
right above CD bay, three wire connector), wait 10 minutes then
proceed. After running for an hour on AC, do a normal PMU reset.

 Gary Dailey

Re: Dead Pismo

2005-01-16 Thread kochkodin
Get a copy of DiskWarrior as fast as you can and run it...It will
probably take quite a while to do so but hopefully it will work for
you...I had similar problem in July of '03 when my Pismo acted that
way...I was able to get it started once in a while in OS9 but X just
hung there...When I got DW it took a while for it to load from the CD
but it finally did. The fact that it starts from the Restore CD shows
thatthere is power etc...It sounds to me like the HD got really
corrupted...As I said, I thought thatI had hardware problems also and it
turned out ok..The Pismo is still running merrily except for that

I would have to agree with this statement, if you can get the machine
booted in 9 off the CD then you have a hard drive problem of some type!

The main drive in my wife's pismo is making some strange noises and
hangs while on the net, often having to have the permissions repaired
weekly, so I will be replacing the hard drive soon.. fortunately
the computer has little data on it and is more of an internet portal
for her to use when away from her main machine at work.

Sounds like a RAM issue. I had the same thing happen on an iMac G3 and
changing the RAM solved it. I have installed OS X (Jaguar and Panther)
on two Lombards with no problem.

Is any of your RAM the original module(s) from Apple? In my

Is any of your RAM the original module(s) from Apple? In my
experience, they are more reliable for OS X installation.

my mail does get through

2005-01-16 Thread vicki Duggan
Hi this is to see if the mail problem i have has been sorted,
Every time i send emails to any of the lists they get bounced back to
me after about 4 days (that is if i reply to a mail) when i compose a
new mail instead of reply some times it gets through sometimes not.
Fingers crossed this will! At first i thought that it was my system but
i can receive mails no problem and also send to everyone else no
problem. So i blamed my ISP because they said they could not give me
online support in OSX or even useing a Mac as they had no tech's. I
have just received a mail from my ISPsaying it is the lists fault for
not answering and receiving the mail.

what is happening.

You need to have a suitable print driver; in most cases this means a
Gimp-Print driver.

To see shared printers on Windows boxes, you need to go into 'Directory
Access' in Utilities and set your WINS workgroup name the same as the
workgroup name of the computer sharing the printer.

Postscript printers work fine, other ones it's catch as catch can with
GimpPrint.

Dented AlBook ...

2005-01-16 Thread Larry le Mac
Yes, I know I keep firing these mails, but I feel it's better
to keep mails with subjects and topic names seperate as
topics seem to stray real easy...
Anyway, I have received a photo of the damage to the 12
ABook, but am unsure of how this affects it.
Apparently there was a mobo change (with receipts) and
it's working fine, but how fixable is the front cover ?
Anyone interested, mail me and I'll send the small photo,
as I can't send it to the list, and nor do I have a place to
upload it at the moment.

2005-01-16 Thread vicki Duggan
If you get a single stick of PC100 sdram at 128mb and put it in the
lower slot 10.3 should load fine.

PC 66 and PC133 are no good it must be 100. I do not know why but that
was the only way i could get panther on my 400 Lombard when i had it.

After the install i just put the ram i had back in and it was fine
running but for the install it had to be Pc100 sdram.

which encouraged a student of mine to paint his. The lid is a waving US flag

You could type all numbers in octal, or use the symbol @ and say it's

so fingers crossed.
Usually when messages come in 4 days later it's because the host was
unreachable for some reason or another, and absolutely nothing you have
done or can do is the problem (unless, of course, you're in charge of
the root DNS servers or something ;-), this is all higher-level routing
and address problems.

This means that maclaunch.com would not accept the message, your
systems couldn't find it, or that it was down.

Since the server wasn't down, either mail.maclaunch.com was rejecting
mail from your servers for some reason, or your ISP was having trouble
finding the right address for mail.maclaunch.com.

If this happens again, try sending a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If that gets through, then your ISP is having trouble resolving the
maclaunch IP address, a problem way above you, and usually indicative
of other networking problems.

If it's rejected again, then the problem is on the maclaunch end.
Then there's a couple of possibilities:
the maclaunch servers are down, or not responding.
the maclauch servers may be set to ignore your email servers as an
antispam measure. Usually this means that your ISP has been put on some
RBL or another for sending spam, or your ISP's reverse DNS wasn't
working.

DNS resolution means you enter mail.maclaunch.com and the DNS servers
give the computer the numeric address it needs to properly send the
message, in this case 157.238.133.140.

Reverse lookup means you send the DNS servers 157.238.133.140 and it
should come back as 'mail.maclaunch.com'. Many spam servers do not
properly do this, so a number of antispam filters block messages from
hosts that do not match both forward (name to number) and reverse
(number to name) lookups.

Again, not *your* problem, entirely, though it clearly affects you.
My guess, since you weren't getting other mails bounced, and the list
wasn't down, your ISP was having DNS problems looking up the ip address
of maclaunch server, which could be beyond *their* control.

Browser issues

 Hi listers,
I need your help

for periods of about a minute or more - sometimes
less. To say the least it was very frustrating. So I
had this bright idea (it seemed bright at the time)
why not reinstall 9.2.2. So I did a clean install. Now
I can't log on to the net using either netscape 7.02,
4.76, 4.79 or IE 5.1.7. The strange thing is that the
remote access connects without any problems. It's the
browsers that do not connect. I'm using all my
previous settings and just to make sure I rechecked
with verizon support. He advised me to call apple
since every setting is correct. Okay you bright people
out there surely one of you must know whats going on.
This is my road worrior and I hate to be only logged
on when I'm home.
TIA,
Pete.

Even more Pismo Problems!

2005-01-16 Thread Dyna
Yes, this is the same 2000 vintage Pismo I've been writing about for
the last couple months... Initial symptoms were freezes and eventually
wouldn't boot at all. After replacing the hard drive and a fresh
install of OSs 9.1 and 10.2 it was working better. In fact at times it
would go for a few hours without freezing. But the freezes are back,
even after I took out the processor card and reseated it. I did note
some dirtyness where the processor contacts the heat sink though, and
like another listmember's my case is also mysteriously cracked.

Any suggestions?
thanks,
Dyna

Re: Browser issues

2005-01-16 Thread Timothy Domst
Whenever you use a browser you need a DNS address, DNS stands for
Domain Name Server. This is a big computer run by a company or
university usually that provides something like a phone book of all
domains that allows your browser to find where to go for what you are
looking for. My suspicion is that you didn't put one in there; go to
Control Panels, TCP/IP, pick which interface (ethernet or WiFi card or
56k modem), and where it says Name server Addr put 206.124.64.253,
that's one of Verizon's DNSs.
